Fulfill. To complete something. To finish a requirement. To achieve something that someone has set out to do. Our scripture today narrates Jesus going to the synagogue and doing the prescribed reading. And at the end of the reading, he adds something that surprises His listeners : ” today this scripture passage is fulfilled.”
For so many years, the Israelites listened to the Old testament. For so many years, all they had was a great longing - a longing that the day will come when all the promises they have been hearing will finally be fulfilled.
And on that eventful day, Jesus comes up and tells them bluntly - all that you have heard regarding the blind being able to see, the good news being proclaimed to the poor , liberty being announced to captives - all of them have been fulfilled.
Today, many of us continue to read, listen and meditate upon scripture. And every time, we choose to allow the goodness of God shine thru us - we also make “the scripture passage fulfilled.”
