Got Mausritter to the table last night and had a blast. Birch, Bindi, Max, and Fennel are amazing little Waywatchers, defending their little township of Foxcross against the perils of a big and largely hostile world. There were a couple of stumbles, but that’s largely owing to the frame shift of going from our usual player-driven games to something more OSR.
Someone out there is angrily typing a response about how the OSR runs on player agency and drive, and yes. I can see how that could be true. But let me pick at this wound for a moment and you can tell me I’m wrong afterward
In the games I typically run, I ask more questions as a GM than I offer declarative statements. In a Forged in the Dark game I can ask a pointed question and use the answer to drive the fiction. In an OSR game, the player asks questions to drive the fiction. It’s the difference between me asking “How does Moon know that this stretch of catacombs is haunted?” and “This stretch of catacombs sets your whiskers on edge, an otherworldly crackle in the air that reminds you of ghost stories on your grandfather’s knee when the deep winter winds blew loud.” Player questions shape what actions they can take, but the solidity of the fiction is established almost solely by the GM.
“What’s the most welcome smell of civilization when you enter the gates of Foxcross after being in the wilderness?” Oh, the smell of Bertram’s wild spring onion soup coming from the tavern, definitely.
vs.
Hey GM, is there a tavern in this town? “Oh, definitely. Bertram runs the Tin Whistle, a cozy burrow on the north side of the island”
I like asking questions more often than I like handing down information and waiting for the players to ask questions to add further detail and color, to make details important. This isn’t a criticism of the game or the process, only that now I’m overwhelmed with trying to decide in the moment what about what their mice see or smell or hear is important or interesting enough to prompt further questions while also keeping it concise and not droning on.
So that was my frame shift. Let’s talk about the players.
They are, to put it bluntly, used to being powerful and competent. And you EARN that shit in an OSR game. We entered a town occupied by city rat reavers and found the bulk of the invaders living it up in the town’s central meeting hall, pausing their drinking and reveling only long enough to lead trains of captive mice out into the night to show the way to more to eat and drink. They players picked off a couple of these stragglers, freed the mice, and played it stealthy and quiet. Eventually their luck wore thin and the alarm was raised and the fight got UGLY. The four of them were facing down the main force of these rats, 14 of them in total. Armed, armored, drunk, and mean. They stood and fought. Half of the party was down in the first round.
Quick thinking and lucky rolls and they managed to effect a resolution in which both sides disengaged in a simultaneous retreat for better ground, the rats swearing blood feud, and the mice taking to their heels.
No one died, but it was a near thing. They were used to having powerful abilities, for a high stat or a particular trait to make them implicitly GOOD at something and for that to be a dependable way to navigate a challenge, for their gear to be logically tied to a particular route of forward progress.
Our 12 STR spearmouse can still fail to put down a rat reliably, only has a 60% chance of bowling one over in a rush. Our troubadour can sing the old Foxcross battlehymn, but the Rats don’t understand the implicit threat and most of it doesn’t translate when he’s only got a 7 will and can’t roll below an 18. Our messenger mouse started play with a bedroll and a packet of sealed documents and spent the night grumbling about not starting with anything useful or germane to the situation…until he remembered that it was up to him to make it germane to the situation. We only got away because he set fire to his blankets and tossed them over a couple of rats fighting shoulder to shoulder and that bought us some time and provoked a morale check.
It was a culture shock, but we talked through it and we think we’re getting a handle on how to engage with the game, largely with the parts that aren’t explicitly mechanized or demarcated in the rules. To lean into the rulings over rules framework. To play smart and ask questions on their part. To be consistent and generous and explicit with information on my part.
Overall 7/10, and that’s a pretty good place to start.

BattleHymn!
A commission by jedi-art-trick for a character from my days of playing TSR's Marvel Super Heroes RPG.
Tino Capaldi was a famous Italian singer who was imbued with power accidentally, giving him sound and vibration manipulation.   (Physical template was I picked a couple years before his album debuted, Enrique Iglesias. I think I saw an article on his Dad, and thought it made sense, but never knew he would hit big).
A friend did one of the few character drawing many years ago and used a Superman re-design concept from a Hero Illustrated contest (HI was a brief competitor the champion fanboy magazine Wizard, but only lasted like a year) as a base, but removed all the Superman elements.  I think we called it "quasi-armor", protective suits with some tech, but nothing really Iron Man level.

@battlehymnns ❛   patch .   help  my  muse  patch  up  a  wound . (Elena)
Tumblr media
it isn't the sight of the wound which sends the hybrid reeling , but rather the pungent stench of metallic crimson . the young doppelganger laid on the ground , obviously hurt . what happened here , remained to be seen . but this was minor in comparison to tending to the girl . swift motion , she drops to her knees . it takes everything in her not to let her true face show through the facade of humanity she wore so well .
" _ elena , " soft whispered cadence , urgency ever present . hands make quick work of pulling the girl into her lap , lifting up her blood soaked shirt . the wound looking even worse than what she had expected , deep and gushing . " fuck , elena what the hell happened to you ? " it's rhetorical , she doesn't expect an answer . focus shifts to her face , noting the paleness . " oh no , no . stay with me . just , stay with me . "
she's not known for acts of heroism , but this girl had so much more life to live and she would be lying if she said she didn't have a soft spot for her . " shit , " fangs extend , swift movement of wrist to lips .a hiss as she bites into herself . her blood would be the quickest way to fix the damage done . abrupt shove of flesh into the girl's mouth . " come on , damnit . drink . "
