Empire of the Hand Military Ranks and the Explorers Branch
Just a little worldbuilding exercise of mine for my Star Wars AU :D
---
Empire of the Hand Military Ranks
The Empire of the Hand uses a more streamlined rank system compared to the old Galactic Empire or the Chiss Ascendency.  I’m using Star Trek’s Starfleet, and Canada’s military ranks, as a basis.
Military personnel wear similar uniforms as in the Imperial Navy, with the exception of the Explorers (see “Explorer” section”), and Flag officers, who have a variant over that of the Old Galactic Empire, as described in their section.
Galactic Empire-style rank plates are still in use.
The Stormtrooper Corps uses an identical rank structure to the Army.  Member species elite forces (such as the Paccosh Commandos, Kaleesh Warriors, etc. have systems unique to their own cultures).
Non-Commissioned Ranks (from lowest to highest):
Navy/Explorers:                                              Army/Starfighter Corps:
Crewmember                                                    Private
Able Crewmember                                         Able Private
Leading Crewmember                                   Corporal
Master Crewmember                                    Master Corporal
Junior Petty Officer                                         Sergeant
Senior Petty Officer                                        Drill/Flight Sergeant
Master Petty Officer                                      Warrant Officer
Chief Petty Officer                                          Chief Warrant Officer
Notes:
"Crewmember" is often shortened to “crewman”, regardless of gender.
It is entirely possible for enlisted personnel to be promoted to officer rank due to exceptional service.
Commissioned Officers:
Navy/Explorers:
Junior Cadet (1st, 2nd  years)
Senior Cadet/Acting Ensign (3rd, 4th years)
Ensign
Sub-Lieutenant
Lieutenant
Lieutentant-Commander
Commander
Captain
Senior Captain
Army/Starfighter Corps:
Junior Cadet (1st, 2nd years)
Senior Cadet / Acting Lieutenant (3rd ,4th years)
Second Lieutenant
First Lieutenant / Flight Lieutenant
Captain/ Flight Captain
Major / Flight Major
Lieutenant-Colonel / Flight Commandeer
Colonel / Flight Colonel
Senior Colonel / Wing Colonel
Notes:
“Acting Ensign/Lieutenant” are only used when the cadets are on field assignments.
“Lieutenant” uses the Core World (i.e. British) pronunciation (so like “left-tennant”)
Specialist titles can be used alongside formal ranks, such as “Doctor”, “Medic”, “Specialist”, “Ranger”, “Scientist” etc.
A senior officer’s aide can use the courtesy title “Yeoman”, regardless of whether they are an enlisted or commissioned officer (i.e. Yeoman Eli Vanto).
Flag Officers:
Navy/Explorers:                                      Army/Starfighter Corps:
Commodore                                            Brigadier-General
Real Admiral                                            Major-General
Vice-Admiral                                            Lieutenant-General
Admiral                                                      General
Fleet Admiral                                            Army General / Wing General
Notes:
The Commander of the Starfighter Corps (actual rank of Wing General) is given the specialist title “Flight Baron”, in honour of Baron Soontir Fel.
Navy flag officers are allowed to wear lighter grey uniforms, with silver epaulets. (rather than the grey-green of most navel ranks).  Fleet Admirals/Army Generals/Wing Generals additionally wear white cuffs on their uniform sleeves.
Grand Moffs (a civilian title, held only by Xelarra – given to her by Thrawn before her ascension to Empress) can wear a similar grey uniform to flag officers.  Planetary leaders wear what is deemed appropriate in their cultures, which can include flag officer-style uniforms for planets with Imperial-style governors, like Nirauan and New Cardia.  Galactic Empire-style Sector Moffs do not exist.

Supreme Commander of the Empire of the Hand military:
Grand Admiral
Notes:
In theory, both Voss Parck and Karyn Faro, during their times as Supreme Commander, were entitled to use the rank of “Grand Admiral”, but both declined, preferring “Fleet Admiral”.  There has only ever been one Grand Admiral of the Empire of the Hand, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Grand Admirals wear unique, all-white uniforms with gold epaulets.
Only the Empress can give the Grand Admiral orders.  More usually, the Grand Admiral and the Empress work in tandem to effectively govern the Empire of the Hand.
Explorers:
The Explorers are an offshoot of the Navy, focused on (relatively) peaceful exploration, planetary/sector surveys, and planting the hyperspace beacons used to navigate by the Empire of the Hand’s Navy throughout the Unknown Regions/Chaos without reliance on Force-users.  They use an identical rank structure to the Navy.
Explorers wear blue uniforms with black pants, with a variant for field studies.  Uniform details indicate specialties:
Explorer Shipboard Uniform Examples:
Tumblr media
Explorer Field Uniform Examples:
Tumblr media
(art my by husband)
Field variants come with matching backpacks, in their division colours, customized to the Explorer’s role.
Explorer Division colours:
1.  White = command
2.  Scrub Green = Medical
3.  Forest Green = biology/life sciences
4.  sky blue = chemistry / meteorology
5.  black = physics/space sciences
6.  Grey = geology/geography
7.  Red = Survival/Combat/security
8.  yellow = Engineering, ships operations
9.  lilac purple = First Contact/Cultural studies/diplomacy
10. magenta - Communications/Linguistics
11. silver - helm, astro-navigation.
Explorers of non-Chisslike species may have uniform variants customized to their physiology.
Explorers in the “command” division (most especially Captains) are expected to have at least a working knowledge of all the other disciplines, so they can more effectively lead their crews.
Standard issue for all field Explorers includes a handheld scanner, vibro-blade multi-tool, and blaster pistol.
Imperial navy-style hats, in black, are available, but a little-used option
Weather appropriate-hats for field uniforms are usually worn on-planet. Explorer rank plates have built-in communications and personnel tracking systems (and are informally referred to as ‘comm. badges’).  These are slowly being adopted by the rest of the military.

I love that the EU has characters like Baron General Soontir Fel, who grew up working on a big farm in Corellia as a farmhand until he defended a girl from assault and got shipped off to the military academy at Carida where he was classmates with Han Solo, won the only battle the day the first Death Star was blow up, trained Hobbie Klivian and Tycho Celchu, literally pulled the 181st up from the dregs to become the elite Imperial squadron, married Wynssa Starflare, the Empire's premier holostar (and also Wedge Antilles' sister), left the Empire, teamed up with Thrawn (who I think is boring but you know) and then had 5 children, one of whom married Han and Leia's daughter and went on to found a new Empire with Imperial Jedi and usher in a new era of peace and prosperity for the galaxy, but Disney was like "we'll make up our own stories" and then went on to tell their 85th story about a man on a desert planet. A very cool choice they made.

This has been the only thing I could work on for the last week. An Imperial AU wedding, guest starring Vader lurking behind Luke, Padme being like "I guess I'm here," Tarkin somehow getting in the wedding photos despite not even being invited, and Luke's only friend now that Leia ran away--Baron Soontir Fel and fam.
anyway I'm Luke/Mara trash and always have been ✌🏻 Click for better resolution probably

Give me all you have!
please!?🥺🥺🥺
I tend to go in-depth with my OCs, so I'm going to start with just one, if that's okay with you :)
This one might be "cheating", since she technically is a character in Legends -- though one we never actually met or saw. She was only mentioned briefly by her brother, as a warning of how dangerous the Unknown Regions were, as one of the two members of the Fel family who died before reaching 20. I've had enough of women in fiction being used as just props in a male character's backstory, so with my AU, I decided to change that.
Meet Cherith Fel
Tumblr media
Read the very little there is about her in Legends here
Birth year: 10 ABY
Race: Human (Corillian family background)
Place of Birth: Nirauan -- Chakra City. Empire of the Hand, the Unknown Regions, the Galaxy Far Far Away
Family: General Baron Soontir Fel -- Father. Syal Antilles Fel -- Mother. Older brothers Davin, Chak and Jagged. Younger brother Cem, younger sister Wynessa. Wedge Antilles --- maternal uncle.  Considers the Chiss Empress Lexx'elarra'nuruodo - Xelarra her honourary aunt.
___
Cherith was born the fourth out of the six Fel children, and first daughter of the renowned Imperial fighter pilot Baron Soontir Fel, considered one of, if not *the* finest pilot to ever get behind the controls of a TIE, any TIE, and his wife, holovid star Syal Antilles Fel, after Soontir had been hand-picked by Grand Admiral Thrawn as one of the elite Imperial officers he trusted with his secret "shadow" Empire in the Unknown Regions, the Empire of the Hand. The fact that Thrawn was willing to trust Fel after he had left the Empire to join the Rebellion speaks volumes of just how good a pilot and officer he was.
Cherith grew up alongside her brothers, and was as eager as they were to follow in their father's vapour trails. She watched impatiently as her three older brothers, Davin, Chak and Jagged, did just that, yearning for her turn. As she grew older, however, something else besides the thrill of flying also caught her attention -- longtime family friend, Mitth'shra'nuruodo -- Shran, son of Grand Admiral Thrawn and Empress Xelarra. The Chiss boy was only a year older than her, best friends with her brother Jagged (himself 3 years older than Cherith), and their mothers were also friends (as had been their fathers, before Grand Admiral Thrawn's death)  so Shran was a constant presence in her life, almost like an extra brother, and she'd often join Jag and Shran in playing video games (especially TIE simulator), and listening to Shran go on with just as much enthusiasm about *his* chosen field, joining the Explorers, an offshoot of the Hand's navy specializing in exploration and scientific discovery over military action. The more Shran told her about it, the more fun it seemed -- exploring new worlds, carving new paths through the Chaos, finding new resources and allies for the Empire of the Hand.
Having four brothers, it took a bit longer than most human girls to realize that boys are sometimes not *completely* disgusting. Her childhood friendship with Shran evolved into a crush she couldn't shake, even after he had left for the Explorers academy. She tried to push her feelings aside, and concentrate on her own entrance into the Empire of the Hand's fighter academy, as her family expected, as even she thought she wanted.
Flying came naturally to Cherith, and she did put her all into her TIE training, striving to be just as good, if not better, than her brothers. However, Cherith found she actually did enjoy piloting larger ships as well. They might not be capable of aerobatics like TIEs, but her understanding of starfighters translated amazingly well to corvettes and frigates, and, more importantly, to Explorer ships, which are surprisingly maneuverable for 300-metre long science vessels. They're meant to be fast and tough, able to do scouting missions as well as exploration. Cherith began to wonder just what she could push such a ship to do if she were at the helm, and not just because of a certain blue boy who *might* be assigned to the same ship, if she were extremely lucky.
At 16, just months away from graduating from the Empire of the Hand's starfighter academy, Cherith faced the most intimating trial of her life -- telling her father she didn't want to be a TIE pilot. She wanted to be an Explorer.
The Baron was quiet for a few minutes after his daughter poured her heart out, then wrapped his arms around her. He reassured Cherith that he would have been far more disappointed if she had only half-heartedly become a TIE pilot just to please him, and would have been devastated if that disappointment in her path led to her getting killed in the field. TIE pilots have to want it more than anything to survive, and he'd much rather have an alive, happy daughter doing something, anything else, than one who died trying to impress him. He advised her to finish her training -- Fels are not quitters, after all. Then, as an officer, she'd have an easier time applying to be an Explorer. Her training time in her new field would also be reduced.
After another year of class studies, and a year as a cadet, Lieutenant Cherith Fel finally came aboard the RRS Intrepid as the junior helms officer. In her new, Explorer blue uniform, with the silver accents denoting her position as a pilot, she finally felt like she was where she belonged.
As she reported to the bridge for her first shift, she finally met her new Captain:
"Welcome to the Intrepid, Lieutenant Fel.  I’m looking forward to serving with you.” said Shran, with the same, cocky, full of himself smile she knew so well from when they had been kids.
She returned the smile, "as am I, Captain."

about them wraith books
bc i of course am writing up a big big post thingy after finishing the wraith books (wraith squadron, iron fist, solo command) and i gotta analyze zsinj and his people and wedge’s people too.
so first just all the characters ever in it that i can remember and if i forget someone they’re just not relevant to me i guess. this is long so here we go.
piggy sabinring: is first bc why the hell not, i love this smart gamorrean even though i don’t get why he likes math, but can he please do my math for me?
face loran: a very good boy. once sat in ysanne isard’s lap. 10/10
runt ekwesh: i’m just getting all the nickname people out of the way i guess. i love runt. good alien. especially good with the dance scene thingy yeah.
grinder the dead bothan: is a dead bothan
jesmin ackbar: i sort of liked her. she had potential. then death.
kell tainer: i like him a lot!!! sometimes he was pretty meh but i still like him.
wes janson: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but like a million more of them
wedge antilles: is a wedge antilles one of the many wedges antille
tyria sarkin: i almost typed syria tarkin which i do every time bc . tarkin. sarkin. tyria sarkin tarkin.
gara lara: is also known as lara nostril. she is cool but a aaa  a a a a aaaa
myn donos: i don’t really know how to feel. i sort of like him? but mostly indifferent
ton phanan: :(
falynn sandskimmer: we hardly knew ye but ye was cool
dia passik: is a very cool twi’lek lady i like her a lot very cool
castin donn: ew no bad.
the zsinj: meh. he is not great but he is a guy. he exists. yeah.
melvar: i forgot his name and i think it’s melvar who is zsinj’s lackey or whatever. is boring. boring boring boring.
lieutenant kettch: yub yub
that actual ewok pilot: yub
tetran cowall: b i t c h (will elaborate in a large portion of this post. i am Mad)
hobbie klivian: is cool in that scene with wedge and that other scene with wedge
general crispy crespin: i actually do not hate him. he is better than mr horton general y-wing from back in ye olden book 1
uhhh and there were various rogue people present too such as
corran horny: considerably more mature and subdued but he was barely in it so no three page monologues or whatever
gavin babysitter: yes i adore very much
asyr sei’lar: honestly why did we even need grinder we had asyr we already had a good bothan
nawara ven: he was just as badass as usual here
tycho the babe: :)
(pash wasn’t there AT ALL which was sad)
ok so now onto various analyses.
so uhhhh back in wraith squadron we met all the people and they did pramks. then the pranks continuesd which was great. so let’s see:
lieutenant kettch: his entire existence is the best prank ever
the glass prowlers: yeeahaw babey that was so funny where the the bothan guy dude put it in face’s x-wing but face was like “oh this is ton’s it got out” but it WASN’ T and then ton had two an then ton died and face inhereited them bc he was the only one ton liked
am sad
the end
OKAY THEN MOVING ON!!!
so in wraith squadron we meet “baron fel” and we hear about how wedge’s sister syal is his wife and has been missing. and we get some crazy dramatic backstory. they’re missing he used to be a rogue whatever. the 181st tie people are with zsinj. they have red stripes bc they’re copying the rogues. booooo.
anyways baron soontir fel is their leader and everyone is like “???” bc why the hell would he join zsinj.
so then in iron fist he and wedge fly together except wedge is an ewok named kettch bc of a prank SO wedge being curious is like “yub yub fel have mate?”
anyways that part would be amazing but it’s not fel
but we don’t know that at the time so it was amazing
then in solo command it’s like he wants lara gara to fly with him and he is cool but then the end is :(((( bc it ISN’T fel it’s actually face’s actor arch nemesis tetran cowall. who isn’t a terrible actor but has nothing on face, of course.
i say he has nothing on face bc he had his voice and face disguised and just had to talk whereas face only had his face disguised but he still had to do acting stuff, wheeras cowall had a helmet on.
anyways he emerges and wedge is like “what the fuck” and anyways we don’t know what’s up with the fels
and i’m upset because i was FOOLED
and also because i really liked “fel”??? which i suppose is okay because wedge waas fooled too meaning it is close enough to Actual Fel which means i ca n still like fel??? maybe????
i like jag fel which is enough i guess
lod dod fod them bros lookin for brides Good
oh oh oh that scen ewith wes in the the book solo command with the ewok and the nudity. good.
i am really tired and i’m not really thinking much abou t the things gotta type type type type type!!!!
so the beginning of solo command we have wedge he’s leaving his room all fancy going to ask iella on a not-date again probably, hopefull y another husband didn’t show up, unfortunately we don’t see the not-date
before the not-date, wes and hobbie accost him as he is leaving his room. they are like “ooooooo going on a date with iella” and get in a turbolift with him bc they’re assholes and i love them so much
and wedge is like “turn around! walk forward! hop on one leg!” and they do it and he leaves before the turbolift goes to the roof and takes them with it. then he gets on a different turbolift bc he is Good
i love wedge
i am trying to think of things that happened Oh Yeah wedge predicted the future a lot so like in iron fist i think? there was pirate wraiths and wedge and wes were looking at the thing and they was like “this isn’t coruscant because we were just there this isn’t how it was” and yeah it wasn’t and wedge wrote down where it was (kuat) and he was RIGHT
side note about kuat remember the telbun stuff? yeah
anyways later on in solo command the project funeral stuff and chubar and all that was happening (hopping on one transparisteel leg, ewoks in your nose, etc) and it had been twi’lek warriors and gotal hunters and then wedge was like “oh what’s next” and he space emailed the elder cracken and was like “THE BOTHANS WILL BE SPIES AND CODE PEOPLE EVILLY. AND THE SULLUSTANS WILL BE EVIL PILOTS” and the elder cracken was like “ha that’s funny wedge” but then like he couldn’t sleep or something and was like “wait no that makes sense maybe i should have my people look into that” so he did and wedge was right
bc wedge is always right
so now the elder cracken wants wedge in intelligence and admiral ackbar wants wedge in fleet command and wedge just wants to be an x-wing babe
han solo was in charge of this big task force thingy that was forced to task zsinj? tasked to force zsinj? why is it called that?
anyways general han was upset bc his uniform is itchy but he didn’t have the falcon so he bought a FAKE FALCON!!! but he hated it
and he couldn’t fly the fake falcon (why did the call it the millennium falsehood when they could’ve called it the millennium fakeon) and so wedge had to do it
wedge doesn’t know shyriiwook s they had to bring squeaky with them whch was a shame bc i wanted an emtrey
anyways. yeah. wedge good.
for one night han becaame a not han and wedge became a not wedge and it was really funny and they gambled and drank and mutinied and that was great
this is really incoherent i have no more thoughts to think and i am tired. i love face loran. goodnight and send post
