I covered this case in one of my previous write ups about bizarre break-ins, however I wanted to do a full write up about it.

On June 26th, 1981, 87-year-old Sigrid Barginde was found dead in her Chicago, Illinois home. The nearly blind and mostly deaf elderly woman lived alone in her small southside brick home, making her an easy target for anyone with ill intentions.

“They’re going to get me, I just know it.”

This is 87-year-old Sigrid Barginde who was brutally murdered in her home by an unknown intruder. For months leading up to her slaying, the partially sighted, deaf innocent old lady was the victim of a series of bizarre break-ins. In April, she was taking a nap on the couch and when she awoke, she saw several shadowy figures walking around her living room. She screamed for help which made the intruders put a sheet over her head, punch her in the face, and stuff her inside the closet. When they were gone and she phoned for help, her friends and relatives on the other end of the phone couldn’t hear her properly, making police think her phonelines had been tampered with. Sure enough, her telephone’s voice transmitter had been removed with a sharp object. Despite this, police were sceptical of the old lady and blamed some form of dementia for what they believed to be far-fetched delusions.

However, the horrific break-ins continued. In May, she visited the police station to say that she had been burgled the previous night. When police arrived, they discovered that one of her phones had been completely ripped off the wall. She was truly terrified and it seemed that she was being targeted. But by who? Unnerved, detectives set up extra security around Sigrid’s home and concerned neighbours even trimmed their hedges so that the old widow’s house was more visible.

On the 16th of June, Sigrid was returning from her weekly errand of running to the bank. Suddenly, a masked man mugged her outside of her home. The robber was unsuccessful, as a determined Sigrid refused to give up her purse. She went to the neighbours house who called police. Sigrid was said to be terrified at this point and told neighbours “They’re going to get me, I just know it.” 

On June 26th, 1981, Sigrid’s friend tried to contact her for days but was unsuccessful. Concerned, she phoned the police who called around to check on her. What they found was truly disturbing: Sigrid was found lying face down on her bed with her hands tightly tied behind her back with a light brown coloured scarf. Her death was ruled as “natural” in the post-mortem, perhaps succumbing to positional asphyxia due to being immobile on her front for hours. Still, it’s pretty obvious that Sigrid was murdered by the vile home intruders who had been taunting her for months. Her murder remains unsolved.
