Top 6 shelved dramas that I would still really like to see
Ranked in no particular order, selection based on my personal tastes.
1) The Prisoner of Beauty
Plot : Adapted from the novel "Zhe Yao" by Peng Lai Ke, it tells the story of the arranged marriage between Wei Shao (Liu Yuning) and Qiao Man (Song Zuer). The fun thing about this marriage is that they both hate each other for complicated family reasons (in the novel Qiao Man's family is directly responsible for the death of Wei Shao's father), so they start they relationship by trying to make the life of the other a living hell. Ultimately, their relationship will develop as they are impressed by each other's ingenuity and discover common interests. There is also an important "let's protect the empire and the common people" plot behind the romance.
Why I wish I could see it : It looks good !! The main duo of actors are both really good looking, but the production in general looks really high budget, with good costumes and sets. I would love to see that. Just look at this trailer !

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Song Zuer :/ bestie :/ tax evasion is bad !!
Can we have some hope ? : Not really, at this point of time, no c-actors caught for tax evasion managed to make an actual comeback in the industry (even really popular ones like Deng Lun or Fan Bing Bing). Song Zuer is still being investigated, so maybe we can hope to see her name cleared but it's a little unlikely because they don't investigate people just for fun. However Song Zuer was involved in a lot of high budget projects so I am sure a lot of people are really motivated to try to airdrop at least some of her projects if they have the possibility.
2) The Fated General
Plot : Classic high-budget historical drama telling the story of real life historical figure Huo Qubing (Zhang Ruoyun) during the Western Han Dynasty. It follows his military feats that got him the reputation of being one of the best military generals in the history of China.
Why I wish I could see it : First, the cast is incredible. We have Zhang Ruoyun (famous for being really good at choosing his scripts), Mao Xiao Tong, Bai Yu, Li Hongyi, Xu Yue, and others. It's really an all star cast except the drama was shot in 2016, before some of them became really famous, so it can be really interesting to watch ! Plus it's a really high budget drama, most of the outdoor scenes are shot in real landscape and not in a studio and it globally looks really good. For a better impression, look at this nice looking MV based on the different trailers of the show :

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : In 2019 (I think ?) the censorship rules changed concerning historical dramas and established the fact that dramas were forbidden to "distort" certain historical facts. This kind of put an end to traditional historical dramas as they became a way more risky investments, and stopped this one from airing as it already took some liberties in terms of storytelling. Huo Qubing is also a semi-controversial historical figure so it is not helping.
Can we have some hope ? : It's been 7 or 8 years and the regulations concerning historical fiction only got more restrictives in China so I would say no.
3) Immortality
Plot : I'm sure everybody knows the plot of Erha so I don't need to write it but just in case the important tags are : xianxia, dangai, shizunfuckers, reincarnation, blood spitting, stairs, ...
Why I wish I could see it : Outside of the obvious reasons (gay people on my screen, Luo Yunxi spitting blood), it's also produced by the same people involved in the production of Till the End of the Moon and Shui Long Yin, so I have I hopes for the artistic direction of the drama. Also for dmbj fans : did you know Liu Chang played a guest role in this drama ? Idk what he is doing here but I would love to see it.
Why I am not seeing it any time soon : We are all aware of the famous 2021 dangai ban, but in general the chinese government is not a big fan of massive and really agitated fandoms (in the way The Untamed fandom was), so Immortality is in a pretty bad position.
Can we have some hope ? : Yeah !!!!! Hyx TOMORROW !!! Believe in your dreams !!!
For real : Two options. 1) On a random morning of the year 20XX you wake up to danmei fans in your tl losing their marbles bc the 6 first episodes of hyx were randomly airdropped during the night with no promotion and no warnings. You cry some tears of joy and immediately go watch Luo Yunxi spit some blood on screen. 2) After many years hyx is still not out but there were so many leaks that the fans managed to recreate the entire series from scraps and now you can watch it in full. Look, they already started :

4) Night Wanderer
Plot : Zong Yin (Ni Ni) is a forensic expert living in Shanghai in 2021. She met, in her own apartment, a man, called Sheng Qing Rang (Deng Lun), claiming to be the owner of this apartment but in 1937. Together they discover that they can travel to their respective time periods through their shared apartment and start to develop a strong relationship, first as confidence and progressively as lovers. However, the situation get complicated as the Battle of Shanghai broke out in 1937 putting both of their lives in danger.
Why I wish I could see it : First, for lesbian reasons as I would never miss an occasion to stare at Ni Ni for 36 episodes (Wang Yuwen also has a supporting role here and I really like her ! Double win !). Second, it's actually a really nice and original plot for a CDrama and I have full confidence in both actors' capacity to pull off a really good performance to go with it. Look at this trailer ! It looks so promising !

Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Deng Lun !!! Tax evasion is bad !!
Can we have some hope ? : Even less than for The Prisoner of Beauty as Deng Lun is 100% proved to have committed tax evasion. There is often rumors about him coming back to acting but it's unlikely.
5) Winner is King
Plot : Based on the novel "Sha Po Lang" by Priest, set in a steampunk version of the Liang Dynasty. It tells the story of Chang Geng (Chen Zhe Yuan), a young man living in a random countryside village, who discovers after a raid on their village that the closest people around him were hiding a big secret about his identity. He also discovers that the people around him are not who they pretend to be, especially his yifu (adoptive father, played by Tan Jianci), and realizes that his life will never be the same.
Why I wish I could see it : Outside of the reasons already mentioned in hyx's case, Winner is King is also directed by the same director as Guardian and a Journey to Love. I really like his work and he proved that he was able to do really good things even with a really low budget, so now imagine with a decent amount of money ? It could be great. Also I really like the idea of an ancient china steampunk but I am too lazy to read the book.
Why I am not seeing it any time soon : Same reason as hyx and all the other dangais </3 Also I am not sure of how advanced the production was when it was stopped, because I feel like there are not as many content leaks.
Can we have some hope ? : If we can manifest hard enough the end of the ban, it is possible.
6) The Love of Hypnosis
Plot : During the end of Qing Dynasty, a (patriotic) young man named Yen Shen (Jing Boran) meets a fragrance shop owner named Lu Man Sheng (Liu Yifei). Man Sheng has the special ability/ mission to relieve the hearts of people suffering because of love, but it does not mean that her own romantic life is easier to deal with. Together they fall in love and have to navigate the really troubled times of the end of Qing Dynasty.
Why I wish I could see it : If you are familiar with Liu Yifei and Jing Boran acting I'm sure you can see the potential of this pairing ??? Just the poster has more on screen chemistry than some pairings have in 40 episodes. At this point the plot could be written by a cat walking on a keyboard and I would still have hope for a good chemistry. Also the drama has Liu Mintao in a supporting role and I am in love with her so it's a plus.
Why I am not seeing it any time soon : First, there are some copyright issues with the original manhwa author. Second, the second male lead, Zhao Lixin, got more or less canceled a few years back for political reasons (sorry I don't have the details).
Can we have some hope ? : I would say maybe a little. Copyright issues can be solved and I've heard that Zhao Lixin is still shooting in dramas, meaning that there is hope for some of his stuff still being released.

Unshakable Faith (2023)
Episode 35 Breakdown
Dr Bai grabs Seamstress Miao by the throat, demanding to know who Snow Wolf is, but she refuses to unmask her leader. He leaves after threatening to kill them all if anything happens to Nurse Bai again. Electrician Liu Simao sees Officer Ding watch the shop, and creeps in the back door to advise Seamstress Miao that she has been compromised. She immediately sets out to burn several papers and a book before being stabbed by Liu Simao. He tries to take her bag but she holds tight, and he has to flee empty handed when the police arrive, and she dies without any confession. Searching her shop, the police team find her radio equipment, maps of the air raid shelter location and the negatives of the blueprint photos.
On the last day of the experiment, Expert Chief Chu returns to the lab and instructs Ji Danyang to make the coundown and announcement of the experiment's successful end. The cabin team are helped out of the sealed cabin, rejoicing in the sunlight and Ji Danyang finds He Xiwan still inside. She completes logging the last page of data and gives it to him before collapsing from exhaustion.
Master Welder Niu finds the hidden compartment in the cabin with the empty phosphorus bottle inside, concluding it was made by Assistant Rui. Police Captain Chen debriefs Officer Xu who participated in the experiment, focussing on the movements of Nurses Bai and Shanshan, but is at a loss as to how they would know they would get inside. Police Captain Chen has the Hospital Chief review the medical checks of the cabin participants and they discover that the expert who collapsed shouldn't have been given clearance at all. He compiles a list of the medical staff involved in the fitness checks and the Police Chief suggests allowing Nurse Shanshan back to work to see what reaction is provoked.
Officer Hongmei, still recovering from her mercury poisoning, visits Dr Bai and informs him of the seamstresses murder and identity as a spy, and that they'd found her father's body with the help of an anonymous key. Ji Danyang takes a break from analysing the cabin data to visit Officer Hongmei in hospital and they discuss where they might go now this part of the project is coming to an end.
In the expert's office, Lei Peizheng notices one of his titanium samples is missing and reports it to the police team. They check Factory Chief Han's samples and find the missing piece amongst them, but one of his absent. Factory Chief Han questions Secretary Lu about the missing titanium, stating that if a man makes a mistake he should have the courage to correct it, but Secretary Lu still denies his involvement.
Secretary Lu is angry and meets Nurse Bai, demanding to know once and for all if she is a spy and when she doesn't commit to an answer he tells her he plans to confess and if she if a spy to run. She slaps him. Their altercation is noticed by Nurse Zhang Ling and Nurse Leader Ge and Nurse Bai sees Nurse Ge watching from the window.

He Xiwan is all about the mission! Good grief girl you'll go down in history but you'll go down with mercury poisoning too.
"I can't be like Li Guangming". Ok so Secretary Lu does know what happened to Security Captain Li and is FINALLY realising he's in the same spot. Good for him for finally deciding to confess, although will that slap make him change his mind? I really hope he does come forward on his own. He knows the scrutiny is closing in and so does Nurse Bai now. What's she going to do? She can only pin so much on Nurse Shanshan (which I'm still fuming about btw)
Seamstress Miao stabbed in the back (or front) by your cohort. That's what your loyalty to the wrong people will get you.
So who's left now? The still unidentified Snow Wolf, Nurse Bai (who is suspected), fake Li Qiuchen (who is suspected), electrician Liu Simao (who is confirmed and being searched for). At this point Nurse Bai and Fake Li haven't heard about the murder of the seamstress yet but it's not a secret in town so it wont be long. Do they even have another base of operation in town now that the seamstress shop is compromised? How will they pass messages along now?
3 episodes to go! What am I expecting? Whoever the fuck Snow Wolf is, they're going to have to show their face for one final attempt on the project (maybe trying to grab or destroy the data before it can be transported to Beijing?)
As a rule, the commited spies have died (Zhang A Shui, Lai Guangrun, Assitant Rui and Seamstress Miao) and the coerced traitors have been imprisoned (Security Captain Li, the messenger & the digging team). So Liu Simao and Fake Li wont survive, and Secretary Lu will be imprisoned... but what about Nurse Bai? She's a fully committed spy, but she's also one of our leads. I can't imagine her being killed off, it would be too tragic for our other leads. I'd wondered earlier about the possibility of a change of heart upon learning it was the KMT who killed her parents (the reveal of which I still expect) but she's done so much more sabotage since then that there's little to no room left for turning around. Will she just be imprisoned? Or will Dr Bai try and convince her to run away?

Completed 'Surname' Polls
This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! Whether you love them, are intrigued by their characters, love to hate them, or they're your '2 second blorbos whose personality you made up wholesale', these are all reasons for you to vote for your favs!

A lot of posters came out today and here are some of my faves (that are not the hot for teacher ones since I did a post on those already haha)
Zao Zuo Shi Guang - Meng Ziyi and Jeremy Tsui aka both huge faves and some of the hottest people out there in a romance between two manipulative people? OMG YES PLS! Will this be the drama to finally end the MZY curse of never having a happy ending?
Back From the Brink - I still need to read this novel but it’s by the author of Legends and Blue Whisper and I was promised serious angst and hero who is ride or die for disillusioned heroine aka that writer’s bread and butter so I can’t wait!!!! I am fond of both actors too.
West Out of the Yu Men - not normally big on moderns but Ni Ni X Bai Yu in an adventure romance is !!!! Especially since her Night Wanderer has been shelved indefinitely.
Love and Sword looks prettier and prettier with each poster plus Vengo Gao and Xu Lu yessss!
Speaking of Vengo Gao, this poster for The Shadow is terrible tho and that styling! Between that and the huge camp potential of Republican era vampires, I’d write this off but it’s directed by Li Muge (Goodbye My Princess, Rattan, Heroes) and as far as I am concerned that man (like Cao Dun) can do no wrong as a director so I am in!
You know what’s better than having Liu Yuning in a drama called Heroes? Having Liu Yuning in TWO dramas called Heroes. I know little to nothing about this drama but I do adore LYN and Qin Jun Jie and am also happy to note LYN escaped the queue.
Speaking of Qin Jun Jie - the man actually looks FINE in a queue (or maybe too many Qing dramas wore me down.) I confess I haven’t read the novel or watched the adaptation from around 2007 - I keep meaning to - so all I know about Fox Volant of the Snowy Mountain is angst and Jing Yong and more angst so bring it on.
This one is here because it’s been years since I’ve seen Zhang Han in anything and despite not thinking he’s much of an actor I have a huge soft spot for him. It also helps that Liu Guang Yin’s plot screams angsty love story.
Despite the poster and the name - Two Ex Husbands on the Same Stage (that the drama makers renamed into Choice Husband), this is not about polyandry. Or is it? Apparently at one point in the novel she is married to both of them, gets knocked up and nobody is sure who the father is (something tells me the drama won’t keep that 😝😝😝). It’s based on a novel by the Ashes of Love author (which is a strike against it for me - that drama was…well) but the sheer insanity of the novel spoilers I’ve seen has me drawn in.
PS. Apparently they also announced that Feng Shao Feng and Jing Tian have been cast in a period romance and I am going to explode from joy!!! He’s one of my ultimate faves and l love her and that pairing and in a period setting - I can’t!!!!

Unshakable Faith (2023)
Episode 31 Breakdown
In the factory courtyard Nurse Bai is chatting with He Xiwan when Assistant Rui runs through, chased by police. He grabs He Xiwan and holds her hostage and when he slashes Nurse Bai's arm with his knife, Officer Hongmei shoots him. Ji Danyang and He Xiwan check on Nurse Bai while her wound is being treated and in the police office, Officer Hongmei is annoyed that they couldn't capture Assistant Rui alive.
The police team want to see what reaction Assistant Rui's death causes in their other suspects so Officer Hongmei stakes out the library, watching the fake Li Qiuchen. Officer Hongmei follow him through town, but is interrupted by Nurse Bai who has been watching her. The fake Li Qiuchen evades her and meets with seamstress Miao who advises him of Assistant Rui's death.
Dr Bai's patient tells him he's found the cellar they've been looking for. At home, Dr Bai starts preparing the medicine Snow Wolf wants to use, and puts the key Xu Wenzheng gave him into an envelope.
The police team discuss who Assistant Rui had regular contact with, including Nurse Bai treating his nosebleeds. When Nurse Bai is giving Expert Chief Chu a massage, Police Captain Chen calls him asking him to leave his office for a few minutes. Officer Hongmei and Officer Ding watch Nurse Bai from a neighbouring window, but she only cleans while she waits for Expert Chief Chu to return. The police team are split among themselves regarding their suspicions of Nurse Bai, but Officer Hongmei can't deny her frequent involvement in their investigations.
Officer Hongmei receives the unexpected invitation from the fake Li Qiuchen to climb Dongshan with him, accepting for the chance to investigate him further. As they climb they both question the other and both evade giving any full answers. Afterwards, the fake Li Qiuchen is awarded at a public ceremony as Officer Hongmei watches on, declaring it his father's wish to donate the copper mine to the city.
The expert team gives Factory Chief Han and the Police Chief a tour of the survival chamber test lab inside the air raid shelter, and expert Lei Peizhang is bitten by a poisonous spider while they're visiting. After curing the spider bite, Nurse Leader Ge advises Expert Chief Chu that they should have the lab disinfected and have medical staff onsite to do it, which he approves and Nurse Leader Ge, Nurse Bai and Nurse Shanshan visit the lab to disinfect it.
Seamstress Miao and fake Li Qiuchen review the information from Nurse Bai about the air raid shelter's location, and the seamstress advises that there was an unfinished second air raid shelter on a neighbouring face of the mountain that she could try to find.
Officer Hongmei receives the key and an anonymous letter, guiding the police team to search the nearby destroyed Shiqiao Village.

Another spy bites the dust!
I do feel bad for the likes of Assistant Rui, he was kicked out by his sister's husband as a kid and was begging on the streets when he was recruited to the Nanshen class, similarly Nurse Bai had been kidnapped and it was the KMT that found her before Dr Bai could. They were indebted to those who saved them, unfortunately their saviours chose to train them to be weapons.
Too many coincidences are now working against Nurse Bai, right when things are ramping up for her. Some of the police team are like "Nurse Bai can't be a suspect, she got injured!", completely forgetting that Security Captain Li jumped between Hongmei and a grenade and was still a spy. Dont fall for the pretty face!! Also don't let our math man know you're suspecting Nurse Bai or you'll never hear the end of it.
Do I want her to survive this? I want Dr Bai to survive this, but I suspect he won't. The narrative theme is following a fairly traditional idea that the "bad guys" don't get to get away with it, this show will end with all the spies we've seen being caught (maybe with the exception of Commander Kou but he's stuck in Taiwan so he'll lose all of his agents or be demoted instead). Like Lai Guangrun said to Dr Bai, you can't escape your past, so unless it unveils that he has been undercover for the CCP since before the liberation, no matter how many good deeds he does now (like giving the key and location of Snow Wolf's cellar to Hongmei, where I'm suspecting her father is buried), he was aligned with the KMT who are this story's bad guys, so he can't get out of this unscathed. The best we can hope for him is to be arrested, but seeing as Nurse Bai is also on the losing side and thus also needs to pay for her actions, I'd expect some sort of self sacrifice to protect her that causes his death.
As for Nurse Bai, she's our second female lead so because of that position I'd expect her to live, and have a moment of partial redemption at the end - like she's learned that the KMT lied to her about the CCP killing her parents (which has been her motivating reason to be involved) and she turns on them at the last minute.
