Hey! i’m really into the dbch story and i was wondering if doc and xisuma ever tell bdubs the specifics of why etho lost his memories, cause if they do that is prime self blaming angst for bdubs

I’m inclined to believe they don’t. Actually (and maybe I should do a small comic for this so more people see it) I imagine, once a month or a few pass and they finally return etho to bdubs as reset, I imagine they are VERY serious about warning bdubs not to try to force Etho to re-deviate— they don’t go into specifics, but they probably tell bdubs that whatever happened had to do with something that was emotionally overwhelming, and that forcing him to redeviate/not letting it happen naturally could trigger the same error. They have no idea what could happen so bdubs needs to be very careful and let Etho find himself again on his own.

Whether or not bdubs gets impatient or can only go so long before he doubts it would be that bad if he tried pushing Etho in the right direction is another story.

But yeah. I don’t think Xisuma or Doc really… tell anyone that this happened. Etho’s error seemed like a very specific one-off scenario, so it’s not something the other hermits should be trying to avoid or be careful about happening to their own android friends, and the only thing telling people would do is make them worried about the situation. All they need to know is that etho was broken and that they need to be careful with him. I don’t agree with their decision to keep what happened to themselves but I understand it I think. Genuinely tho, can't blame Grian for not wanting to be with Scar rn.

I mean, looking back at season one, Grian already spent an entire season following Scar around and primarily helping Scar and doing the majority of the work for two people and he genuinely vocally wanted to leave the entire time only for his feelings to get in the way and keep him with Scar. Which ultimately ended up with Scar betraying him.

And like, I know a lot of fan content portrays Grian as being all guilty over killing Scar, and he definitely seemed Really upset about that (obviously, he cared a lot about scar, having to fight and kill him is definitely..rough), but uh, can we also all take a moment to remember that Scar let Grian get murdered for no good reason like five minutes prior? Like, Bdubs didn't even already have that no-kill-pass on hand, Scar decided in the moment to spare whoever gets the no-kill-pass as if it isn't obvious who he should be fighting with here? Grian literally calls him a traitor after that, like, he definitely (understandably) read what Scar did as betrayal?? And yeah, Scar had his whole "you can kill me <3" moment after, but that doesn't change the fact that Grian was stabbed to death and spent the last moments of that life begging his partner not to let it happen!

Then season two happened, and their separation was in large part because of Grian's initial insistence on forgetting last season, but it's pretty obvious throughout season two that Grian really wants Scar back. And his attempts are..consistently rejected. I don't think Scar actually realized what he was doing, but? He told Grian that an alliance isn't worth much to him, he burned Grian's life-pass in front of him then pushed past him to go talk to more important people, they finally entered into an alliance after Grian threatened Scar into a deal, but this was immediately tossed away because Scar did what he does best and ignored Grian's explicit instructions, getting himself killed when he absolutely should have been fine if he'd just bothered to listen to Grian for once.

And finally we get to this season. Where the entire first episode was spent with Scar very flippantly ignoring that he and Grian are soulmates and just generally not looking for his soulmate as if it doesn't matter even though Grian clearly has a lot of feelings on the situation. And then the next session, Grian built their entire base almost entirely alone while Scar was busy trying to torture him because he was annoyed Grian wouldn't let a herd of wild animals in their house?

Like. Grian genuinely has every reason to want to ditch Scar for someone else tbh. From Grian's perspective, Scar's definitely not a great partner and doesn't seem to care very much for him to begin with. I definitely get it.

In Between Something - Last Life ethubs drabble

A/N: been busy w holidays and wanted to write up a little short bit of interaction between these two to hold over before my next bigger chapter. i was also drunk writing this and did not beta read lol sorry. on 500 or so words. Also during last life ep1 vaguely.

this is part of my fic The Killing type- read this par ton ao3!

There are bumps against his skin, healed over scars too pale to notice. In recent years he hadn't added many more- that's not really what he did anymore... even if it was the reputation he seemed to have. PvP master, cunning, sly- expected to kill in an instant he was threatened. Etho couldn't deny his skill- he was a veteran at the game, he knew how to play it well. Scars come and go- most go. But in this case they stack up, his skin can't keep up with it. Bumps and ridges that never go away.

“You know how... how everyone thinks you're so scary?”

Etho stared up at the sky as he laid back beside Bdubs, opposite to each other. “Yeah.”

It had only been moments after the first session ended, Etho knew Bdubs was lingering behind to put a few more blocks down. The server would be off soon, but Etho hung around regardless. For just a moment in the uncommon silence in this game.

“Do you think its kinda funny?” Bdubs looks at Etho from the corner of his eye. “I know you're good at fighting but.. you don't do it much.”

Etho was quiet for a moment. “Oh, um. I guess its kinda funny.”

“I mean- I mean its like... its just funny because, you know. We haven't really been doing things like... like that Death games-” Bdubs continues, “or, or UHC even. You were gettin' a lotta kills back then.”

Bdubs seems to say it with some kind of pride for Etho, impressed by what he was capable of. Etho wasn't unhappy with those incidents, not at all. It had just been so long.

“I mean, I still- I can still... you know, kill people.” Etho says quietly, looking over at Bdubs. “I have, recently.”

“Oh yeah, yeah I know but it's just,” Bdubs replies with a laugh. “its different ya know?”

“It is.” Etho pauses, running a hand along his chest where those faint scars lie. “It's... part of the games, like its expected. Not really a thing I just... decided to do. Like I really wanted to.”

There's more quiet between them, the night getting colder and their breaths billowing out as they breathe.

“I try not to really make it my...thing anymore, though.”

“Your thing?”

Etho clears his throat. “You know, the scary persona. It's handy, I guess... but-”

“You're not scary.” Bdubs interrupts with a laugh. “To me, because I know you.”

“Well I just- I didn't really think it'd catch on after all this time.” Etho sighs.

“So no more killing?” Bdubs asks, clearly with jest. “You wouldn't wanna kill my pretty face? Its been so long.”

“No... Or, yes?” Etho chuckles.

Bdubs hums. “Alright, alright- well I look forward to adding another scar when that happens.”

Etho feels Bdubs scoot closer to him.

He swallows. “You still have scars on you? From... years back?”

Bdubs nods, “Yeah... you'd think almost ten years later they'd be gone. But you got some pretty good hits on me- no matter how many respawns, some are still there.”

As they lay there, Etho sees Bdubs raise his right arm, a faint scar running all the way down. “You didn't kill me on this one but, hoo boy. It stuck around.”

Quietly, Etho looked at Bdubs' arm. He wasn't sure what to say. It didn't make him sad, or guilty. There was some kind of feeling tugging at him though, something different. He reached up and locked his fingers with Bdubs'.

“You want another scar to think about?”

“Yeah.”

“Alright.” Etho said, “Another time though, okay? I want to stick together this series.”

“You don't wanna kill me when we go red?” Bdubs looked over, grinning.

“No.” He kept his eyes on the night sky above. “Not this time. We're sticking together.”
