I appreciate that Shirai didn’t think this was a satisfactory conclusion to a conflict that had been simmering in the background for twenty-five chapters, but this was still one of the most disappointing moments of the back half of the series for me, especially when he notes Ayshe contributed to saving Norman in chapter 6 of the mystic code book.
“Recover from the stigma of slaughter” is an interesting way of phrasing it because as @hylialeia concisely phrases it in this post, Norman and the Lambda kids do deserve the chance to do this:
#this is why I feel he's so similar to scar from fmab #like I love the demon characters in tpn but it would have been extremely iffy if the writing had decided they were all suddenly innocent #overall the narrative does a good job of balancing that complexity #without veering off into that self-righteous bs so many stories try to pull #like. the demons commit genocide. actively farmed humans.experimented on them. brainwashed and enslaved a good portion of them.and that happened when there were alternatives! #even the more sympathetic demons are guilty of complacency in the face of this #and the reason I'm still able to root for them is because that sympathy #doesn't require norman or the other lambda kids to be demonized (pun not intended) #so yeah I'm not onboard with the idea that norman didn't ~suffer enough~ for his actions #the kid was raised as food and turned into a human experiment and tortured #the idea that like. musica or sonju should have been meaner to him or whatever leaves such a bad taste in my mouth #(ayshe is valid tho.)
But Ayshe is only given one impassioned sentence in response to her father being slaughtered that’s enough to make her fist clench in anger before the narrative pushes onward.

And it’s made even more tragic because Ayshe’s father was largely reclusive already after a lifetime of being made fun of for his misshapen face
Adopting Ayshe pushed him further to demon society’s outskirts, potentially not speaking to any other demons after quitting his job except possibly at the rare market exchange for goods he might need for her. There was no one he was going to tell about the Lambda escapees.
(Shirai does state he was part of the aristocracy at some point to explain why he knew the demon language:)
(So between that and working at the farm, he did implicitly uphold the system without questioning it, but by the time he leaves his job we can assume he’s only eating humans to maintain his sanity, or he’s somehow related to the group of aristocrats who drank Mujika’s blood 700 years prior so he has no need for it. He wasn’t actively fighting against it, but he wasn’t contributing to it in the last twelve years of his life.)
But while most of the Lambda crew doesn’t know any of this backstory, Shirai also notes that Norman knew the demon language by the point they meet Ayshe thanks to Smee:
So he knows exactly what she’s saying as he stands before her in the wake of her father’s murder. He doesn’t make any attempts to correct the others’ inferences based on their own experiences with the demons at Lambda. Ayshe either quickly composes herself and goes along with them without a fight or another word, or Norman plays her reaction off as her not being in the right mind after being her held captive by a demon for however long as they carry her off to the paradise hideout (I’m assuming it’s the former though because her dogs would likely attack in the latter scenario). And he lets all of this simmer for potentially months (the timeline’s not exactly clear on how long Ayshe has been with them)

instead of talking to her about any of this despite knowing they made a mistake. Upon meeting with her again after the events at the imperial capital, he takes a few panels to collect himself before deciding on a single sentence to say to her, and then moves on. Ayshe contributed to saving him per Shirai, but we’re not privy to any attempts at him repaying her or trying to make amends. It’s a shame such a promising, nuanced conflict that should not have an easy, immediate answer was sidestepped to save on page space and expedite the series finale.
I do think it’s interesting that despite whatever he said being infuriating to her, Ayshe is willing to be in physical proximity to him during the timeskip, and her and her dogs allow him to hold a puppy.

Like many people I’m defaulting to him providing her with some form of a short apology in that chapter 160 exchange. He’s accepted that Ayshe might kill him one day, though after everything he’s gone through in his arc about the flawed thinking of sacrificing your life in pursuit of a cause, I don’t believe he offered her his life in exchange as part of any honor customs, or at least not while he’s still able to do some good in the world. Ayshe has accepted this, albeit not happily by any means.

ray and ayshe parallels make me soo unwell its insane. you have a girl who was raised by a demon that gave her nothing but unconditional love and a boy who was raised by a human that abused him and made his life miserable for 6 years. that volume 19 side scene that begins with ‘your father... was a good parent.’ ‘he was a monster, you know.’ ‘doesn’t matter.’ and ends with ‘my mother was human, but... to me, she was always a monster.’ and the fact that this is a conversation between two 13 year-olds.
ayshe’s dad going ‘well, i’ll just think of her as one of the dogs.’ when he first takes ayshe home because he has no idea how to care for a human, but he does have dogs that he cares for and loves vs isabella, who has raised countless human children, calling ray a dog straight to his face as a way to dehumanize him, a subconscious reminder of just how little she values his life in the end. ayshe’s hatred of humans and refusal to speak to them sparked by the ones that murdered her father and her vow to get revenge vs ray referring to his suicide attempt as his ‘retaliation’ paired with the chilling, almost manic degree of excitement in his voice as he practically screams about how he is a human being. shirai what is your problem

182 Days of TPN - Day 168
Chapter 168: "Dad"
I know this is the same room Isabella & Peter were seen having their discussion in back during ch165, but to just have two plain chairs in such a large, empty room seems so extra. Regardless of that, I do like the panel of the trio here, even though they're surprised to find no one here due to the fake footage Peter fooled Vincent with that lead them there.
Dunno how all the kiddos are hearing Peter's message since the teams seem to only have one person with a communication device but whatever. Perhaps he's speaking loud enough for everyone to hear.
Although I have a hard time believing the Ratri men were able to tie up the Adam clones without a fight, I guess anyone will yield once you hold them at gunpoint. Also, the absence of Hayato in this panel is a nice hint to his role next chapter.
While the demon guards don't cause much of a problem during the rest of the story, it still would've been better if the kids killed them off instead of put them to sleep. I get that they didn't wanna kill if they didn't have to, but it would've been one less thing to worry about. Hearing about Sonju & Mujika's execution definitely adds to the stress. Not as much as their deaths could have, but we're thankful Peter was stupid enough to actually wait three days.
Along with all the citizens who drank the evil blood being killed, the Ratri clan and the higher-up demons taking control of the government, let's add the plan to assemble a ton of new Lambda farm into the mix as well. Talk about a big time panic. The premium farms don't sound so bad now huh?
Oh Vincent, you dunno these kids as well as you thought if you honestly believe they would shoot the adults in front of them. Emma, Ray, Don & Gillian couldn't manage to fire a shot at Andrew back when he held Dominic & Alicia hostage after the shelter raid. You're best bet would've been Oliver. This goes back to that old post of mine wondering who, among the kids, would be able to shoot at another human, but I still believe Ray could manage it, if only as a last resort.
The thought of Norman firing at another person was always a toss up for me though. Of course he showed no mercy towards demons during this WM phase, so even with the clear difference between demon and human, I wouldn't have been completely surprised if that cold persona of his came back with a vengeance once he heard Vincent get shot. Peter's been a thorn in Norman side ever since Lambda, so having this bastard personally hurt one of his friends just adds fuel to the fire. Norman (& Ray) did often mention taking down Isabella & Krone back during their GF days if they wanted to escape successfully, so they have level of brutality, it's just been real lowkey. Thankfully none of the children need to get blood on their hands. They've suffered enough already.
Please never say those words with your mouth. No one in this world considers you as that.
Hell yeah Oliver, let him know what's up!! I love that he, Zack & Gillian feel so strongly about the word "dad" because of the relationship they had with Lucas. The same can be said about Ayshe & her father but I can ramble more about all that next chapter.

If you've been around me for a while, then you already know how damn hilarious this panel of Norman is to me.
I mean, in context, it's pretty serious, but thanks to a silly edit I've made years ago, I can't look at this panel anymore and not laugh like an idiot. So, now's the perfect time to upgrade it from a noticeable bad edit I made in the car on my phone once upon a time to something more worthy to use every time I lose my mind.

182 Days of TPN - Day 138
Chapter 138: "Demon Search, Part 1"
Vincent once again being a human dictionary while sending endless praise towards Norman. I do like how we see Cislo having some temporary doubts about the extermination plan. Between him and the rest of the Lambda crew, he definitely seems the most easy going and wholesome. He's a good boy. I like him a little bit more now because of this.
Humans outside of the farms are rare enough as it is, so which poor soul was it that perished here?? Unless said human was just leftovers from one of the mass production farms? Regardless, love Ayshe giving the dog some well deserved pets.
This tiny family is so precious. I wish this search lasted longer so we could see them more. Same sentiment for after they found Sonju & Mujika so we can witness Ayshe relax and interact with others she understands more. If the anime actually stayed faithful to the manga, I still doubt it would've given us any spoken demon language between them though.
Ahh bunker dad, may he rest in peace! He probably would've gotten along well with Ayshe, if only because she's quiet and wouldn't bother him as much as the other kids did. Speaking of others, who do ya think is the best sniper between Yuugo, Ayshe & Paula? Now there's a trio I would've died to see. (funnily enough, all three are in my top ten, haa!)
Her sight, hearing, speed and accuracy are all on point. This girl is simply incredible.
Way to stay positive, Don! But he's totally correct. Ain't no way Sonju would ever let any kind of harm to befall on Mujika, especially not from some Lambda kids.
I like how Don says this while only holding a compass and not a map of any sort since we learned in ch99 that both he & Gilda already have all the maps that were available in the shelter memorized. I dunno if the map Norman showed them both a couple chapters ago was any different from those but I wouldn't doubt they could've memorized that one just as efficiently.
The way Hayato is walking so calmly into danger combined with Ayshe sorta allowing it for a moment despite the warning from her dogs and her own senses is absolutely sending me.
Emma's influence is so strong and the disadvantages Don gave about using their guns are completely valid too.
I love how Gilda is all chill with Hayato but turns completely serious towards Don not even a second later so they can discuss their findings. Give the boy a moment to enjoy his snack!
It took me a fairly long time to even notice that Ayshe was actually standing behind Gilda in this first panel. It's subtle with how the speech bubble covers her but it's great. More importantly, this moment between them gave me such whiplash the first time; to finding out that Ayshe does speak and understand their language, to the sheer amount of pressure she's exerting on the duo, forcing them to choose their next move carefully because who knows what she'll do if they answer incorrectly. Such a suspenseful reveal but it works so well! If you're gonna have a quite character, then you bet the first time they speaks has gotta be memorable, not only with what they say but also how and when!
Favorite panel/moment:
It's sweet that Don makes an attempt, but it's beyond hilarious how quickly it falls apart. You get an A for effort, honey.
IT IS SHE!! Just everything about her I love to death. Damn it, she's so amazing. One of my favorite panels of Ayshe for sure.
