5 Crime J-Dramas You Could Watch
Investigation dramas that have a good mix of seriousness and comedy with strong chemistry among the casts.
1) Hakozume ~Tatakau! Kouban Joshi (2021)
Tumblr media
Pic by Tokyo Hive
20 year old rookie police office Kawai Mai (Mei Nagano) joins the police force out of family expectations for her to be a civil servant and as such she does not have the right motivation to push through when things get tough when she becomes physically and mentally drained.
Feeling unappreciated serving the ungrateful and rude citizens, she contemplates her life and considers quitting, until she was assigned to an enigmatic and fearless senior officer, 30 year old Fuji Seiko (Erika Toda) , who is said to be a former ace detective who was demoted.
After going on patrols with Fuji, Kawai became inspired by her driven nature and wishes to be like her. Over the course of the series, they solve numerous realistic ordinary cases that everyday police officers faced, unlike the typical armed robbery cases you often see on TV series.
2) Tengoku to Jigoku: Psychona Futari (2021)
Tumblr media
Pic by IMDB
Mochizuki Ayako (Haruka Ayase) is a determined and passionate 35 year old who is the only female detective in her department that she works hard to earn herself a name and seek justice to hunt down law breakers like the shrewd Hidaka Haruto (Issei Takahashi) who often gets away with his crimes.
Ayako has come close to apprehending Haruto under the full moon when something mysterious happens that knock them both unconscious. When they re-awakened, they discovered that they have swap bodies, much to Haruto's delight. Now Haruto in Ayako’s body is arresting Ayako in Haruto’s body!
The game begins as one tries to outwit the other as Ayako tries to buy time to figure out what happened and how to get her body back while Haruto takes the opportunity of being a police officer to frame Ayako for the crimes instead so that when their bodies switched, Ayako will be arrested instead of Haruto.
3) Unnatural (2018)
Tumblr media
Pic by Drama Wiki
Misumi Mikoto (Satomi Ishihara) is a forensic investigator who works for the special department that investigates unnatural cause of death, solving dead-end cases or re-opening cases due to requests from police departments or family members of the deceased who wants a full closure .
She works with her team of misfits of different characters and backgrounds, from arrogant veteran investigator who has record breaking of solving numerous cases to a young part time officer, fresh from school who wants to work to gain experience and learn the ropes of becoming an investigator .
I think it is the most interesting show out of the five here as each episode are like puzzle solving where the story start off with one assumption leading you think that it might be this case but halfway through it makes you think that it might be that case but eventually it turns out to be something unexpected.
4) Hello, Detective Hedgehog (2017)
Tumblr media
Pic by Asian Wiki
Goro Nanase (Eita) and Kyusaku Kogure (Go Morita) are private detectives at Akatsuka Detective Agency, which is led by Kaoru Kaze (Tomoko Yamaguchi) . They handle dead-end or weird cases that the police do not want to handle, from corporate conspiracy, to treasure hunting and ghost sightings.
On their bad days when they are struggling to pay the space rent of their agency, they even perform non-investigative cases like fulfilling strange requests from clients which eventually turned into a genuine criminal case when some mishap happen along the way.
Their days of being private detective changes when they assisted Ranko Shidawara (Kyoko Fukada) who believes that her father was murdered and did not commit suicide as the police and company led her to believe. Their antics alone are worth watching as it's meant to be a lighthearted show.
5) You're Under Arrest (2002)
Tumblr media
The story revolves around two police officers, Natsumi Tsujimoto (Misaki Ito) and Miyuki Kobayakawa (Sachie Hara) . Being an officer is not as glamorous as you would think, just like any other jobs, there are the good days and there are the bad days on the job, dealing with difficult people and challenging tasks.
Although they are with the traffic police department, but their line of work often cross path with criminal in progress activities that they decide to take matters into their own hands instead of waiting for the respective back up team to arrive which cause jurisdiction problems with the other department.
I love their complex relationships as they have opposing personalities, mindset and way of doing things, which makes them conflict each other from time to time but once they learn to set aside their differences to work together, they're an unstoppable pair.

--[Disco Wednesdayyy 25/?] Mercury retrograde, the perfection of 九十九十九, and twisting both a house and the plot to their limits [tw: body horror]--
Last time, Disco had a talk with JJ Styron about how fucked up the future world is, and we ended with Disco deciding to search for Mercury C’s shop in Chofu.
Still at JJ’s, Disco asks the receptionist about the shop that delivered the sweets. The pamphlet she gives him claims that the shop has just celebrated its third anniversary, which would mean it was only opened in 2016. Huh? Confused Disco swings back to JJ Styron’s office and asks him about Mercury C, but JJ swears he doesn’t even know that name. But Mercury C took part in the Pine House, shouldn’t his name be publicly known? Disco uses JJ’s computer to pull up an article about the Pine House case, which lists the following people as missing [putting the entire list here solely because it’s a nice reference. And yes, they put Nils first ;w;]:
Detectives: Mikami Nils Disco Wednesdayyy Judy Dollhouse Choukuuji Keraku Choukuuji Kiyuu Hakkyoku Sachiari Sabayama Nigouhan Kakiuchi Mama Jump Hidzuki Mame Gen Neko Neko Nyan Nyan Nyan Runbaba 12
Angel Bunnies: Fukushima Manabu Hongou Takeshi (great detective Hongou Takeshi Takeshi) Kato Jun'ichi (great detective Sakurazuki Tansetsu) Kimura Daisuke Kawai Kazuhiro Hayashi Hiroyuki Kamimura Tetsurou Tanaka Masatsugu Satou Kazuhiro Yoshida Yukino Hanada Sawako Kawabe Keisuke Miyazaki Natsue Hiroki Takako Mizorogi Fumie Kajiwara Ayako Nomura Rie Nonaka Mami Obata Aki
The article did list exactly 31 people, but no Mercury C. Runbaba 12 was listed instead, probably since his return to the past must have been also seen as a mysterious disappearance. Strange... Dezuumi should have remember that Mercury C was there, so why didn’t he?
[If you read the list of detectives carefully, you may notice that aside from Dezuumi and Mercury C, another important character isn’t mentioned, and it’s highly weird that Dezuumi especially wouldn’t remember him. Hmm...]
If the shop really was only created in the future, and the past seemingly changed in such a way that Mercury C’s actions may have as well not happened, then this would mean...
Mercury C came from the other side of Ragnarok.
The entire Pine House case as it happened was just a ‘fictional past’ to him, much like the current events with JJ Styron were a ‘fictional future’ for Disco.
If Mercury C came back to the future, and his influence into the past was completely erased, what results would it have? Was Disco going to disappear or lose his powers? While events like Mitamura’s death and the detectives gathering in the Pine House were set, Mercury C’s intervention changed so much -- would these changes disappear?
What if Mercury C never returned to the future and waited for Ragnarok? Would the fictional past simply disappear? But if the future outcomes were anchored in the past causes, what on earth would happen if those causes didn’t exist?
Why did Mercury C come to the past anyway? To lead Disco somewhere? Could he be secretly working with the foe and trying to figure out where Disco hid the kids? But no, future ‘Disco’ came back to the Pine House with a ‘Mercury C’ by his side, surely it’ll be alright...
Disco goes to Makuri-ya, which turns out to be located in a slightly different place than Mercury C told him. The staff has no idea who Mercury C is.
Confused, Disco wanders aimlessly through the streets. What is the truth here? What is the thing he’s sure is real, in the end? The children he’s going to save. He has to find a hiding place... maybe one that even Mercury C doesn’t know about. Something unexpected...
--
Disco arrives at his old apartment building, hangs out a little in the garden remembering better times, and tries to call his future self or anyone else to help him figure things out, but nobody comes.
Then he glances at a tree that he once carved his name in, notices the last two letters of ‘Disco’ are C and O, and suddenly remembers.
九十九十九 = COCOC
“That’s right”, the God of Detectives said during his explanation. “The perfection of the name ‘Tsukumo Juku’ will be realized.”
And earlier, “The culprit closed the ‘S’ shape back into an ‘O’, and Mitamura ‘wrote’ it again to ask for rescue.” This was his initial theory, before he redrew the supposed shape of the Stairway To Heaven from an ‘S’ to one more resembling ‘C’. The open shape of ‘C’, the closed shape of an ‘O’. Open, closed.
Natsukawa Cottage and the Pine House.
Natsukawa Cottage was turned into the Pine House by Mitamura. Then, Disco and the others turned the Pine House back into Natsukawa Cottage, at least in their own consciousness. After Ragnarok, once all the people who have this consciousness leave the vicinity of the building, Natsukawa Cottage will once more become just the Pine House. Open, closed, open, closed. C, O, C, O... But there is a fifth letter, one more C.
The Pine House is going to be opened once more.
[Lore note: this is incredibly similar to the near-far wordplay in Jorge Joestar. Once again we have two alternating states, and the protagonist using the pattern of the name 九十九十九 to realize that there’s one more switch between those states to come.]
Now that he thinks about it -- is the Pine House the perfect place he can hide the kids in? He remembers reading an article about Pineapple-chan, an alleged ghost of a child heard in the Pine House. Mitamura even wrote a book with a character called Yukidzuka Pineapple... was what Mitamura and his editors heard really a ghost, or just one of the hidden children? And if they could hear it, would this mean the kids were hidden in that compressed space-time between room 8 and 9, right next to where Mitamura was working on his books?
Led by a feeling, Disco jumps to the Pine House of the year 2019.
--
The future Pine House looks completely abandoned, as if nobody came here in years, though the damage they did during Disco’s explanations has been fixed. Even the holes in the wall are covered with new wallpaper.
Alright, he’s here, what next? He should already know what to do. If there were no detectives around to give him clues, then that should mean he already had all the information he needed and just had to put it together. What was the piece of information he overlooked? What didn’t come into play yet?
The 12 words from the Pine House.
отмачивание (‘soaking’; Maijo translates it as ‘peeling off something wet’) отмачивание (see above) Onsdag (Wednesday) Outrider Ovario (ovary) Onobwi (sixty) Olak-alik (repetition, back and forth) Oktubre (October) Oviana (when) Orquesta (orchestra) Oдоо (now) 廿六日 (26th day)
Aside from these cryptic words, what else can come into play? Disco remembers the Pineapple Home and the mirror world in its ceiling, then the Hanged Man tarot card. Should he try to change his perspective like Odin? He tries to hang down from the chandelier, but it doesn’t seem to be working. But wait, this is the future. If space-time is folded, then this world is already upside down. Maybe the first thing he has to do is to reverse gravity. To somehow fully convince his consciousness that up is down and down is up. But how on earth do you trick yourself into sincerely believing something? That’d be like playing rock-paper-scissors with yourself.
First, he has to trick his eyes. Disco activates the projection of the magic circle, so now the floor and the ceiling look the same, then takes care to remove everything that serves as a point of reference: the chandelier, the tables, the zodiac ornaments, the handrails. The fact that the hallway had two layers of carpeting comes in handy when he has to put one of them on the hallway’s ceiling, and he wonders if this -- and not just hiding blood -- was their true purpose all along.
Now to find a way to get to the ceiling. Disco remembers how in school they once made Moebius strips by taking a paper strip, twisting it and attaching the ends together.
Tumblr media
The simplest way to get from standing on the floor to standing on the ceiling without losing the ground under your feet would be to twist the space of the Pine House into a Moebius strip and walk along the curve.
Tumblr media
Disco runs through the hallway following this path, but soon realizes that this won’t be as easy as he expected.
Right in front of him, cutting between rooms 8 and 9 and protruding into the hallway, there is the white wall of the World’s End.
--
That’s the third damn wall Disco saw today. First was the transparent one in the bedroom, then the white one at World’s End, and then this one. Maybe a time wall would always be transparent in the forward-time flow, and white in reverse-time flow?
He tries to approach the wall from a different direction. Still there. On the second floor too. Like a white sheet stretching all the way up to the ceiling... perhaps continuing forever. Maybe 'behind’ this white wall was the compressed space in which his companions and the children were hiding? He tries to call them, but realizes that if the wall signalizes two time flows colliding, then there’s no way his voice would carry over. He tries jumping ‘behind’ the wall, but can’t.
Thinking about what to do, Disco enters room 9 and stares at the wallpaper-covered hole. During Kiyuu’s reasoning, they found Mitamura’s body there. The God of Detectives later claimed that Daibakusho had brought it back from the morgue... but was it really the case? Even if it was Daibakusho’s doing, what meaning did it have? Was it meant to show him that there was something more hidden inside the wall? Mitamura was still smiling, as if he died keeping some secret safe...
Without damaging the wallpaper, Disco jumps into the hole in the wall. No World’s End there, just cramped darkness. Hm. Okay, now to think about how to enter the world ‘behind’ the white wall.
While thinking, Disco warps space so that he’s floating gently in the air, curled in the weirdly comfortable darkness. Soon he starts feeling confused about where’s up and where’s down, so he stretches his arm to touch the wall. Nothing. He must have warped space so that the darkness stretched wider, or maybe it was himself that shrunk into this comfortable, womb-like darkness.
He’s slowly losing track of time. Without any point of reference, his inside time is getting uncoupled from the outside time. If people can’t go into another space-time because it clashes with their own, then maybe someone whose sense of space and time is nonexistent can get anywhere?
Disco feels as if he just got enlightened.
This quiet darkness, this ‘Black Box’, is a device made for the explicit purpose of getting rid of your sense of space-time so you can enter another space-time. It’s like a decompression chamber.
Disco focuses and jumps ‘behind’ the white wall.
--
Disco isn’t sure what he’s looking at.
It looks like a collage of many different worlds. He’s standing in the middle of a savannah, but to his right is a tall mountain, and to his left a beach with a diagonally titled sea. Multiple orbs hover in the air, each one containing a lush jungle.
Two cheetahs run up to him and introduce themselves in Japanese as Lightweight and Middleweight. “Are you alone?” they ask. “Where’s your companion? You know, your brother?... Huh? You really are alone? ...oh well. Hey, look, Ichirou and Jirou are coming this way.”
Indeed, two people are descending the mountain. The cheetahs run somewhere while Disco goes out to meet the two people. Just like he expected, Ichirou and Jirou are identical-looking Japanese teenagers.
The thing is, they don’t resemble Mitamura Saburou in the slightest.
But they look a whole damn lot like Daibakusho Curry.
After Ichirou and Jirou greet him like an old friend (how do they know him?), Disco asks awkwardly, “Sorry, do you have belly buttons?”
“Huh?” “What’s that?”
He shows them his own, and the boys seem concerned that Disco must have been stabbed in the stomach or something. If they don’t have those, then... are these two really Daibakusho’s lost brothers? And how on earth did they know his name? Did someone from the Pine House tell them? Were they in the Pine House during the case somehow?
After some thinking, Disco realizes what exactly happened [and boy, if it isn’t one of the wildest things to come out of Maijo’s books.]
--
When Daibakusho Curry / Sakai Tsutomu was still in the womb, he absorbed the bodies of his two brothers. However, the brothers continued to live inside his body as parasitic twins for close to 38 years. So in a way, they also took part in the Pine House case, and heard the explanations about consciousness and space-time.
And just like Kozue, simply by hearing the explanations they were able to learn how to warp space and jump in space-time.
When Daibakusho / the God of Detectives stabbed himself again and later almost died, his two brothers had no choice but to run away from his body by warping to a place they perceived as safe...
...into young Mitamura’s body.
That’s why young Mitamura was suddenly struck with a stomachache so strong it was mistaken for appendicitis. During his surgery, the brothers fell in danger of being cut out and dying, so they ran away again, leaving an empty cyst behind. Where did they run to this time? Somewhere close to Mitamura again...
...into his mother’s uterus while she was pregnant with him 37 years ago.
The two brothers must have learned how to change their own shape, as they managed to successfully grow into healthy fetuses and later be born along with Saburou as triplets, and were given names Ichirou and Jirou.
The two were raised by the Mitamura family until they were 14, when they suddenly disappeared. Maybe the difference in looks between them and Saburou was starting to become too obvious with puberty, or maybe they chose to leave to find their own freedom. Either way, they arrived here, into the world hidden inside the Pine House... right next to Mitamura Saburou’s own study.
--
As Disco looks around the patchwork world, he realizes that all the animals move in pairs. Giraffes, whales, even pandas. Pandas?
“Are Kon Kon and Den Den here too?” he asks.
“Yeah!” “Right there!” They show him two panda cubs frolicking in a bamboo forest.
“So it was you who took them?”
“We didn’t force them to go with us or anything.” “They just wanted to play.” “It’s fine if they have to go back now."
The culprits in the (animal) twin kidnapping case really were those two...
Apparently, in this Twin World every animal knows not to eat the others, and is able to make a world of their own to provide everything they wish for. Ichirou and Jirou are the only humans.
“Aren’t you lonely here?” Disco asks.
“Huh? But everyone is here.” “Same species or not, everyone’s a friend.”
“And you’re not sad at all?”
“Not really.” “We’re always happy.”
“Wouldn’t you like to go back?”
“It’s fine if we go back, it’s fine if we stay.” “Everywhere’s fine.” “The world before... it was alright, but it had so many unnecessary things.” “Happiness and sadness.” “Bitterness and amusement.” “Victories and problems.”
A giant world in the shape they could change as they wished. A giant world...
“Hey, would it be alright if I brought a whole lot of people here, so they can hide like you?” Disco asks.
“We're not hiding!” “We just kinda found this place.” “And made it bigger!” “And brought a lot of animals from zoos!” “And since we know how fun it is to play together as twins, we brought twins to play here!”
Weren’t hiding? But they disappeared in 1982 (which on this side would be 2030)... “You know you’ve been here for years?”
“Yeah.” “We have.”
“And you really didn’t make this world, just found it?”
“Yeah.” “It’s been here before that.” “There was no one else here, so we thought maybe we could play for a while, just the two of us.”
So this world was created somewhere after the year 2030. By whom? Maybe Disco will learn to manipulate time to this degree one day, who knows.
To think these kids really managed to jump behind the white wall... then again, if they could pull off time travel as embryos, they had to have giant potential. Maybe spending time in the womb was like the ‘Black Box’ and allowed them to learn how to change their internal space-time.
Anyway, Disco finally found the place to hide kids. He shares this idea with Ichirou and Jirou.
“Ah, but Mr. Disco, people from the future can’t go inside this world.” “Same with animals.” “We tried to get two fawns from 2015, but they couldn’t get inside.” “Those giant bandicoot rats from 2007 couldn’t either.”
Right, time was running in the different direction than outside. The Twin World has a forward-time flow, just like pre-Ragnarok world outside. If so... then maybe if the Twin World existed pre-Ragnarok, it’d have reverse-time flow, just like the post-Ragnarok world outside. He could hide kids from the future in the past Pine House.
[This is illustrated by a diagram spanning two pages. Since it’d be unreadable on tumblr, here’s a link to a bigger size.]
“Who knows about this world?” He asks.
“Only we two.” “And Mr. Disco!” “Oh, right.”
“Huh? You didn’t say anything to Saburou or Tsutomu?”
“Nooo.” “What if they did something violent? They’re into weird stuff.” “Like gore or that whole SM thing, gross!” “Or stabbing their own eye out!” “Gross!”
[LOCAL TEENS DISAPPEAR FOR OVER 20 YEARS, NEVER CONTACT THEIR GRIEVING BROTHER BECAUSE THEY’RE KINKSHAMING HIM AHGFKASJHDGKJ]
“What about the animals? Do they leave and come back often?” If they speak Japanese, they could spill the beans to someone.
“No, no.” “Once they’re here, they don’t want to come back.” “We only take them from zoos, where they’re kept in tiny dirty cages.” “Here’s much nicer.”
“But their parents are very sad that their children disappeared.”
“Yeah, but kids have to eventually separate from their parents. “Human kids too.” “It’s a little lonely, but you get used to it.”
“Anyway, please don’t come out of this room anymore, alright? Some bad people could discover where it is.”
“But everyone can come here!” “It’s a free place!” “How are these people bad? What kinda bad things they do?”
“Things like bullying children... or ending the world.”
“That’s horrible.” “Yeah, that scary.” “We won’t come out anymore.”
“You sure? I’ll need you to stay here for at least 13 years.”
“It’s fine!” “For us, it’s like 13 days.”
The time worked differently in this world. If it was 2019 on this side of Ragnarok, then it was 1993 on the other, so the two should be 25. But they still looked 14, since they could make time flow as fast as they wanted.
Disco says goodbye to them for know and goes to Kon Kon and Den Den’s place next. He tries to persuade them to come back to Run Run, but the cubs say she should come to this peaceful world instead, and they give Disco a piece of bamboo to pass to Run Run. Disco briefly considers grabbing the two by force, but they’re a delicate endangered species and all, so he just mutters “fair enough” in English, and is surprised when the cubs still understand that. Apparently, the animals here can speak every language.
Disco flies up trying to assess how big the Twin World is, but it seems to go on forever. A giant world, constantly changing before his eyes... Thinking about the speaking animals, Disco remembers the biblical Tower of Babel. When people tried to reach God, he struck the tower in anger and confused the languages. But in this world, there was no language barrier, no war, no horrible child abuse, and everything was just fine.
After one last look, Disco warps back to the Black Box, fixes the Pine House so that no one will notice he was even there, and finally returns to 15th July 2006.

Let’s Read & Suffer: Tsukumojuku by Maijō Ōtarō [part 19]
Today`s recap: In which Tsukumojuku finally enters the Illusionary Castle, reunites with a character that I honestly forgot existed, discovers a very convoluted serial killer puzzle, and then things once more get pretty damn meta. [tw: gore]
STORY 4 PART 3
After Tsukumojuku discovered her crime, Serika and Seshiru had to escape once more. They both looked very hurt, with Serika crying and saying that she didn’t want to get separated from Tsukumojuku again, even if she understood that he had his own life now, what with his marriage and kids. [No, I don’t know how he can get married at like 16 either.]
(Love was a memory kept by the whole body. Made in the brain, spread with the blood throughout one’s entire being, and would never cease. ...and the love he once held for Serika was nothing more but a distant memory, he realized.)
When the twins fled Chofu, they left two disembodied hands of a man in the hidden room. According to Serika, that man’s name was Okubo Kengo. Well, that's proof enough. Tsukumojuku returned Ryouko's hollowed-out body to the police, and said that the criminal was Seshiru, leaving out the truth about Serika. A lot of bodies were later pulled out of the river, among them Okubo Kengo.
Tsukumojuku got the 10 million yen prize, transferred half of it to the twins' bank account, bought the magazines for his mother-in-law, and returned home in time. Whew! The mother-in-law questioned why he only got half the money, and he couldn't thought of a reason other than “er, must have dropped it on the way here?”, but it seemed they believed him.
He then learned that since Yanbe Tetsuo, the Illusionary Castle's owner, was quite rich, a prize for solving the Castle case had been funded: 30 million yen, which was something they could definitely use.
That night Tsukumojuku read the Third Story. Apparently Okubo Kengo was a serial killer there. In reality... well, you could say a lot of killing was done by his hands. [*rimshot*] In the Third Story, Seiryoin Ryusui was trapped in the Castle... maybe that meant they’d meet tomorrow, once Tsukumojuku got through the underground waterway. (The Castle’s underground... wasn’t that where the monster Gajobun was supposed to live?...) Maybe him thinking about the flag of Gibraltar, showing a key under a castle, really did make sense after all. Did the cross and the crown mean something too?
When he went to the park next morning, there was still a lot of policemen in there, investigating the terrain around the hidden room. A journalist came up to him like “Oh, so you're that Great Detective Tsukumojuku”. Since Tsukumojuku was afraid Ms Suzuki or Tsutomu would learn from the media where he is, he made the journalist faint before he could get any material. The police warned him against more noisy reporters, and didn’t say anything as he entered a manhole, although they looked a bit confused as to why he was doing that. Tsukumojuku went some distance underground, turned on the flashlight he'd brought with him, and looked around.
The waterway was full of ghosts.
STORY 4 PART 4
Of course the waterway was full of ghosts, their faces twisted in sadness or anger; lots of people had died in the Castle. Maybe they were trying to look for their way back? As he walked forward, their numbers increased, until he had to practically squeeze between them to proceed. Finally, he found the place where all the souls were looking up at the same spot. A hole in the ceiling. It seemed no soul could pass through it: a lot of them were frozen in mid-air reaching for it, and Tsukumojuku used that fact to climb them like a makeshift ladder. [Sure.]
Once he climbed out, he noticed a rope ladder, that this “Seiryoin” had probably been using to exit the Castle. If he really was the culprit of the Geneijo case, and these souls were the victims, then it’s kinda weird they didn’t do anything to him.
Tsukumojuku wandered the Castle’s cramped passages for some time before hearing upset voices:
“...I don't knoooow! This makes no sense! Enough! Enough!” “Calm down, Abe.” “I'm serious! I want out of here, right now!” “Stop crying, it's annoying! There's no reason for it! We're fine! Your assistant should be able to do something...” “He’s not my assistant, he’s more like a little brother to me...”
Following the voices, Tsukumojuku opened the door to what looked like a giant chapel, with stone pillars and stained-glass windows. Above the altar, maybe 15m above the ground, a giant crucifix with a figure of Christ was suspended. There were about 20 men and women in the chapel, and one of them was someone very familiar to Tsukumojuku: Abe Atsushi, or Daibakusho Happy. (安倍敦, or 大爆笑ハッピ)
[If just like me you have already forgotten who the hell was that -- it’s that private tutor from the First Story who couldn’t teach for shit, constantly repeated the rakugo “Dowry”, and hanged out with little Tsutomu a lot.]
Tsukumojuku followed Abe’s horrified sight to see what this was all about. On the altar, there was a box with a woman's head inside. Her pale face had a red circle painted on the right cheek, and a blue circle on the left cheek. Her eyes were open, dark eyeliner and fake eyelashes applied. On the box’s inner side was written the name “Geneijo” in red, and the number “5” in blue. On the head's right side somebody had put a clown doll dressed in black.
Oh, and there were 42 other boxes.
Small or large, all rectangular, sometimes containing a head and sometimes half a body. All were decorated with colors, had some kind of toys inside, and were numbered.
Three boxes didn't have bodies: one was numbered “7″ (seventh column from the left) that happened to be next to another “7″. “5″ (tenth column) was empty too, and also had another “5″ as a neighbour. A “1″ (2nd column) also had another “1″ next to it, but instead of being empty, it contained a hand made of clay. So, a double box number would distinguish the empty ones?
The 43 boxes all symbolized individual covers of the 1975-1999 issues of Geneijo, a detective novel magazine. The empty boxes corresponded to '75 July Extra Issue (with Edogawa Ranpo on the cover), and '76 May Special Issue (with Yokomizo Seishi). The box with black clay hands was the '78 New Year Special Issue.
[The next four pages are Tsukumojuku’s drawings of the boxes -- don’t worry, you don’t actually have to pay any attention to these for the plot, but I’m putting them here just because.

Among them Tsukumojuku found Ryouko’s head, wrapped in pink scarf, with lips painted pink. (He hoped the white rose in the box would be, as stupid as it sounded, a bit of a comfort to her lost soul... though her soul was still stuck behind that bookshelf.)
He quickly understood the reason why the criminal had used 12 bodies from outside the Castle. During its first year being in circulation, the Geneijo magazine was published by a company called Geneisha, which eventually bankrupted. The magazine was from then on published by a new company called just Geneijo. So the first year issues, from February '75 to January '76, were “from outside Geneijo” -- from outside the Castle. And so were the victims.
- - -
Tsukumojuku approached the group of people, and told Abe that he was Tsutomu's older brother. Abe recognized him (“Oh, it’s you! You alright? How did you get here? Does Tsutomu know you’re here?”) Tsukumojuku told them about the waterway entrance, and everyone cheered, for some reason shouting “Kick-kick-kick, four-dimensional kick” in happiness. A tall man thanked Tsukumojuku for coming, said that everyone in the chapel was an entertainment group [as in actors] called the Angel Bunnies, and asked for his name.
“I’m the Great Detective Tsukumojuku.”
The cheering stopped abruptly.
"What the fuck?!” Abe yelled in tears. “That's already the third Great Detective Tsukumojuku! I don't understand anything! Is the world made out of Tsukumojukus?!”
The tall man tried to console Abe saying that it was all fine, they could leave now -- but Tsukumojuku quickly said that actually, they couldn't leave yet, since the criminal may be among them.
“But,” he said, “I can guarantee that the case will be solved in the next 30 minutes!” Just in time to get back home for lunch. “So please be patient and--”
“But that's exactly what the other Tsukumojuku sa-a-aid...!” Abe was completely hysterical, so Tsukumojuku asked everyone else to look away and took off the sunglasses. Now that the nuisance was temporarily gone (along with two other people too curious for their own good who also had looked his way), he put the glasses back on.
The tall man was like “oh shit, that really is the Great Detective Tsukumojuku, what's with the unnatural beauty and all”. Huh? So that other “Tsukumojuku” was just as beautiful as him?
- - -
The Angel Bunnies introduced themselves to Tsukumojuku. [You don’t have to remember these names at all, don’t worry.]
The name of the tall man was Fukushima Manabu (福島学). People who had fainted alongside Abe were Kawabe Keisuke (河辺恵介) and Nakai Sayaka (中井紗也香).
Other members, men: Kawai Kazuhiro (河合一洋), Hongou Takeshi (本郷雄士), Tanaka Masatsugu (田中正嗣), Kumono Takuya (雲野巧也), Hoshino Masato (星野真人), Aoyama Gen (青山元), Furutaka Masayuki (古高雅之).
Other members, women: Mizoroki Fumie (溝呂木文枝), Kajiwara Ayako (梶原亜矢子), Nomura Rie (野村りえ), Obata Aki (尾畑亜紀), Nonaka Mami (野中麻美), Yoshida Yukino (吉田由貴乃), Iwai Yumi (岩井ゆみ).
A total of 19 people. There were 20 of them once, but unfortunately Higashimoto Mika (東元美佳) was currently stuffed in the box symbolizing the November '76 issue of Geneijo.
As for what they were doing there: apparently Tsutomu (now Great Detective Daibakusho Curry) had been invited to the Castle party. He and Abe were a part of the Angel Bunnies, so when he got the invitation to the Castle, everyone went together with him to have some fun.
Needless to say, it wasn’t fun. Among other casualties, Seiryoin Ryusui vanished without a trace the very first day. Other weird shit was going on too. Apparently some actual JDC members had appeared out of nowhere: Ajiro Souji, Hikimiya Yuuya (氷姫宮幽弥), and the Detective God Tsukumo Juku himself. The rumor was that they had come to protest the publishing of Seiryoin's JDC books, and that Tsutomu / Daibakusho Curry was secretly cooperating with them.
Three JDC detectives... each with his own method of reasoning. Ajiro Souji would ponder the topic endlessly, Detective God would wait patiently and gather evidence that showed up with time, and Hikimiya was mostly there to write the data down. Apparently this now meant that Ajiro was worrying himself with Geneijo on a break from his usual telephone detective stuff. Detective God mostly closed himself in his room and napped [probably because why bother when the evidence hadn’t showed up yet?]. Hikimiya was running around and calculate many weird things like how many chairs and bed there was on the first floor (the same that the number of pages in Seiryoin’s Cosmic, apparently), the number of windows (99, like the number of chapters in Joker), and how much space the carpet took (the same as all the illustrations, table of contents etc. in Carnival.)
Hikimiya was now busy reading through the entirety of the library, counting how many times individual characters show up, or some weird specific shit like that. (...Tsutomu’s cooperation probably meant he was taking care of poor Hikimiya while he was working. Tsutomu was just the kind of person who’d want to take care of others.)
- - -
Since the Angel Bunnies had no idea what the hell the Geneijo magazine even was, Tsukumojuku explained.
Geneijo was called that after Edogawa Ranpo's famous essay. The same essay’s name was also given to the mysterious castle showing up in Seiryoin's book -- in these books, the Castle’s owner was even called Hirai Tarou, which happens to be Edogawa Ranpo's true name. In Joker, a serial killer called the Artist killed a whole lot of people in Geneijo, and the JDC detectives had to stop him... but of course, that was just a story. To make things even more meta, in the JDC books there actually appeared a character called “Seiryoin Ryusui” who was simultaneously writing the JDC books.
Just a story... But the JDC detectives had appeared in reality now, as the Angel Bunnies pointed out. But maybe they were just cosplayers, who would made up things using words and numbers -- anagrams, math puzzles, word plays and so on. If you kept doing this long enough, one thing would always lead to another. For example, let’s say we want to connect “words” and “numbers”. If you moved the voiced consonant in “kotoba” (word) from end to beginning you'd get “gotoha” which you can write down as “五とは” which has the number 5 in it, isn’t it just amazing?
Or that the word “suuji” (numbers, 数字) would also be read “suuji” when written as 崇辞, and if you now swapped the second kanji in that for same-reading 詞, you'd get 崇高な詞 (a sublime word?) which are 本物の言葉 (real words). Words within words. Words without unnecessary decorations. (余計な装飾のない言葉). Words by themselves, to sum it up.
[I’m equally confused by the word play onslaught, don’t worry.]
There were a whole lot of these word games, and obviously some common theme would always crop up if you banged one concept into the other hard enough. These puns and anagrams were the essence of the JDC series, so naturally, it wouldn’t be strange that these “hardcore JDC cosplayers” would also love them.
- - -
In an attempt to solve the mystery, Tsukumojuku then took Ryouko’s head out of her box and using a knife carefully cut off her face to make a mask, which caused the horrified Angel Bunnies to run away to the other side of the chapel because what the actual fuck, dude. Tsukumojuku put the makeshift mask on, and just like when putting on her skin, Ryouko’s memories instantly attacked his brain. They were so strong he fell on the floor in convulsions, and actually broke three ribs in the proccess. Too many memories, way too much information, too great of an impact, and then suddenly – the memory from just before death.
Chofu, near the river, late at night. Somebody trying to catch Ryouko – it's Serika, wearing Okubo's hands like gloves. Ryouko ran, but was caught and tackled to the ground. Serika sat on her chest, and yelled for someone to keep her legs down!”. A man with long black hair and glasses -- Seiryoin.
Mystery solved. In Geneijo, Seiryoin was God.
And as he took the mask off, that God’s “Angels” -- Ajiro, Hikimiya and JDC’s own Tsukumo Juku -- entered the chapel along with Tsutomu.

IMPRESSIONS:
*Maijo voice* how many layers of meta are you on? you’re like a little baby, watch this
Jesus, just how many tiny kanji can you fit on all these diagrams, Tsukumojuku? Good thing the details don’t really seem to matter in the grand scheme of things, at least as far as I’ve read, so I don’t have to translate this mess.
I love the scene with the ghosts. The soul ladder reminded me of the Kars ladder from Jorge Joestar, for some reason.
I don’t know if this is the intentional reading here, but I love the idea that the Detective God would just chill out in his room while shit is going on because he knows how mystery novels work and that the case’s not gonna get solved before the writer wills it. “Gonna take a nap, wake me up once the scared witness gets shot just before revealing the killer’s name.”
In the JDC series, Hikimiya Yuuya specializes in crime statistics and such, which requires him to always carry a laptop he can calculate data with. He loves quoting mystery novels whenever he can. While working as an assisstant to such great detectives like the Detective God or Ryuuguu Jounosuke, he has some complexes about his own power of reasoning. Not a very remarkable guy, at least on first sight.

  About Fate/Grand Order -First Order-
The year is AD 2017.
The last era in which magecraft still thrived.
The Chaldea Security Organization was founded to focus on preserving the continuation of human history. They observe a world which magecraft couldn’t observe and science couldn’t measure all to prevent the certain extinction of humanity. But one day, the future that Chaldea continued to observe disappears and humanity’s extinction in 2019 becomes clear. Rather, it had already happened. The cause seems to be related to Fuyuki, a provincial town in Japan, in the year AD 2004. There, an “unobservable region” that had not existed before appears.
Based on the assumption that Fuyuki is the reason for humanity’s extinction, Chaldea issues an order to explore, investigate, and possibly destroy this singularity – a quest for the Holy Grail: the Grand Order.
