Today We Honor Ava DuVernay With films like 13th, Selma, and A Wrinkle in Time, Ava DuVernay has made it a point to put representation at the forefront of her critically acclaimed work. She has also racked up countless firsts: the first Black woman to win the Best Directing Award at Sundance in 2012; the first Black woman to get a Best Director Golden Globe nomination; the first woman of color to direct an Oscar-nominated Best Picture film; and the first woman to direct a film that grossed more than $100 million domestically. Her work has made her the highest grossing Black woman director in American box office history. Her latest project, When They See Us, was nominated for 16 Emmy awards, making her the first African American women in Primetime Emmy history to receive multiple nominations in their careers for directing. Filmmaker @ava Ava DuVernay's stunning, deeply moving @originmovie is in theaters today, January 19, and I urge you to see it immediately! Get tickets at www.OriginFilm.com
I saw this film in early December, and it took several days for me to fully process what I had experienced. I am still astonished by HOW Ava was able to adapt Pulitzer Prize-winning author @isabelwilkerson 's book "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" into a cinematic masterpiece. I AM STILL BLOWN AWAY by the always brilliant @aunjanue_ellis447 's incredible performance as Wilkerson - she deserves every single accolade!
Ava will be doing in person Q&A sessions at select NYC screenings: Today (Jan. 19), 6:00 PM AMC Lincoln Square; 7:45 PM AMC Magic Johnson Harlem; Tomorrow (Jan. 20) 2:30 PM AMC Lincoln Square; 4:15 PM & 7:20PM Angelika Film Center.
Brava to the talented, intelligent, courageous Black women who made this movie happen, and to those who write the questions and the answers.
Shout out to everyone who generously donated to Ava's seat16.com initiative, which gifts free tickets for teens to see "Origin."
