Every Natasha Pulley book ever:

Bulky Man is unintentionally bulky, he's just sort of stronger than everyone because that's the nature of his life. Everyone assumes Bulky Man is violent because of his girth, but he actually hates violence and is really just the nicest little dude inside.

Fragile Dude is little and/or easily breakable. Fragile Dude is brilliant and/or powerful. He too is pretty nice, but he's probably had to use his intellect and/or power to commit some kind of atrocity in the past that he will be attempting to keep secret over the course of the story. This will be revealed 3/4 of the way through the book, but the circumstances surrounding the atrocity will be so horrible that everyone will agree it was probably justified.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude are both dissatisfied with their lives to some extent.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude meet through a series of unlikely and often unfortunate events.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude are forced to work together in some capacity.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude are both a little bit afraid of the other, but there's also some quality that they really like or respect in the other nonetheless.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude continue to work together, but now they're starting to reluctantly take a liking to the other. Neither of them realize that the other actually likes them though.

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude have had to help each other out of some sticky situations by now. They're clearly head over heels in love these days, but circumstance and/or society is keeping them from acknowledging it. People have started to hint to Bulky Man that Fragile Dude is actually super shady, so you better watch your back. Bulky Man doesn't really care that much at this point, but he's like, I guess I better look into these accusations.

(Some kind of cute but unusually intelligent animal is usually involved with the plot and/or their relationship by this point. Also, there's at least one loveable child character that usually helps the characters bond.)

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude have a nice, cheerful break from all of the traumatic events they've been experiencing, which inevitably ends in a romantic encounter.

Because of communication issues or societal issues, both chraracters still don't actually believe the other character loves them, and they both act like it was just a one off thing and an accident and that everything is totally fine.

Things are awkward between Bulky Man and Fragile Dude, but the traumatic events have really fired up again so they still have to work together. Plus, they're both just that desperate to be together, even though they think the other character hates them now.

Bulky Man finds out Fragile Dude's secret, but usually he doesn't get it quite right or he's missing some essential information. Bulky Man is temporarily horrified of Fragile Dude. Bulky Man chides himself for being so desperate for affection that he fell in love with some kind of psycho.

At this point, either Bulky Man makes a stupid mistake while being horrified or circumstances just happen to suddenly get a lot worse or both. Bulky Man and Fragile Dude are physically separated, often by force and some kind of authority. At some point in here, Bulky Man realizes he was wrong about Fragile Dude.

A slapdash plot is hatched to save the stolen love interest. Usually Bulky Man has to save Fragile Dude, but occassionally the script is flipped.

Ultimately, the stolen love interest is rescued, though it was a real close thing at some point. The Day is saved, usually through murder/s, caused by a combination of Bulky Man reluctantly bashing some heads in and Fragile Dude using his wits and/or power to get the right people killed. Often, our protagonists are then forced to straight up run away from the Bad Times, leaving their lives and families behind. (The loveable child from earlier will either be tragically left behind or adopted by the now happy couple.)

Bulky Man and Fragile Dude are a little bit sad at the things they've lost along the way, but mostly they're going to live happily ever after.

She wasn't good in fights... she did her best work when she was fully supporting people in their own fights, so that's what she did now. Casting bless, guiding bolt, and whatever else she could think of for her companions... and it was almost enough. Almost. For a smart enemy goes after the groups supports first and foremost...

And that's exactly what they did.

Helpless to what was about to happen, it was clear she was the only one frozen in spot... for between one breath and the next Gale was before her, hands shoving her back against a wall as he takes the brunt of the damage. The blood spray splatters against Aubrey's face as her eyes widen...

And something within her snaps. "Gale!" she screams his name, helping lower him to the ground as the cultist advances... though before they could get much further, Aubrey allows her magic to flow through her, standing from Gale to place her hands firmly on the Cultist's face...

And from her mouth, words of power came that disintegrated the poor sod where he stood. Quick to kneel back down, Aubrey's expression was fierce with a myriad of emotion... but her first order of business?

Healing Gale.

"It'll be alright, I promise you. I'll get you fixed right now.." she urges, hand cupping his face as her other hand presses to his injury... and from her hands flow magic once again, though this time its to give life rather than take it away.

The fact that she had taken a life period was enough to have her hands trembling, a sinking pit forming in her stomach that made her want to vomit.

"Yes! …No? I don't know!!" Vesper was visibly distressed as she paced before Aubrey, claws raking through short, ashen waves. Pacing before the other tiefling woman, she carried on being quite animated even as she failed to get another sentence out in any clear manner. Instead just muttering to herself as she stomped around in a distraught circle, clearly overthinking about a number of scenarios that may or may not have even happened yet.

At last, she stopped. Pounced at Aubrey a second time with even more fervor. Theatrics were nothing if not par for the course with a bard, after all.

"What am I supposed to say to something like that?!"

“A Sweet, Perfect Scream”: Fanfic Preview and Soundtrack

This is kinda, sorta a follow up to this post, this one is for another upcoming fic I'm planning “A Sweet, Perfect Scream”.

Like Still Here Breathing, this is another spinoff/prequel to one of my WIP's, Love's Sacrifices.

This time, it is a crossover between Pitch Perfect, Sweet/Vicious, and Scream (both the movies and the MTV show).

CW: If you’re unfamiliar with Sweet/Vicious, this post will have mentions of SA and Rape Culture, given the shows own content. And if you’re somehow unfamiliar with Scream, it’s a slasher franchise, so it’s content should go without saying.

Anyways, onto the preview

It’ll be set in 2018, a year after Pitch Perfect 3, and show how Beca, Chloe, Stacie and Aubrey became the polycule they were in Love’s Sacrifices. It will also feature Bella Conrad from when she’s just starting to toddle, with Stacie looking into Bella’s biological father for medical purposes.

There is a supernatural element to the story, but it probably won’t be that prominent. Mainly because this fics "verse" already includes supernatural shows and movies; Carmilla: The Series, Ginger Snaps, TVDU etc. Though most supernatural stuff will be in the background.

This is also also a continuation fic of MTV’s Scream, ignoring a plot point in its Halloween special, and Sweet/Vicious. It see’s Lakewood survivors, Emma, Audrey, Brooke, Gustavo and Noah, attending Darlington University.

As it turns out both, Emma’s parents are alumni. But of course a Ghostface is following after, hoping to finish what started in Lakewood.

Meanwhile, Jules and Ophelia, in their crusade to bring street justice to Darlington, would begin to uncover a series of coverups. As Jules and Ophelia’s vigilantism gains attention and support, both from current friends and new. Basically, creating a Sweet/Vicious “Bat-Family”

The discovery of these coverups coincides with Ghostface’s appearance in Darlington. The higher ups at Darlington using this to bring negative attention to the Sweet/Vicious vigilantes. Especially after Ghostface kills a would be rapist and their victim.

Darlington University and township still has a rape culture problem. Darlington’s higher ups are still concerned about protecting their image/reputation than they are protecting and helping victims of sexual assault. In their eyes, the vigilantes fighting back against Darlington’s rape culture, are a bigger problem than the rape culture itself.

This system is as much an antagonist as Ghostface(s).

It would turn out that Darlington does a little more than turn a blind eye to sexual assault. They have cover ups going as far back as the early to mid 90’s. It gets a little absurd how low Darlington’s system will sink and how far they’ll reach...just to protect the reputation of their university and prized students.

Back when Emma’s parents attended Darlington, one of them confessed something that made the higher ups reach out to Lakewood, and help aggressively cover up the truth about Brandon James’ supposed killing spree. This is one of the reasons Ghostface shows up in Darlington.

Meanwhile, Bellas (Beca, Chloe, Stacie and Aubrey) pay a visit to both Darlington and Lakewood, as Stacie is trying to find out who Bella’s biological father is. It turns out, when Bella was conceived, Stacie slept with six guys (“and three girls”), two of whom lived in Lakewood and resided in Darlington.

Bella’s biological father is ultimately gonna be narrowed down to a canon character from either MTV’s Scream or Sweet/Vicious...and there’s a good reason Stacie wants Bella to have nothing to do with him.

Still, Bella’s father may feel entitled to her, and doesn’t care how low he’ll sink to have her. Stacie wasn’t raped (not in her mind, at least), she just didn’t know the guy’s true colours until long after their fling. This gets Stacie, Beca, Chloe and Aubrey targeted by the story’s antagonists.

What brings Jules, Ophelia, and the Lakewood Five, and the former Barden Bellas (once they get roped into this) together is uncovering and dismantling the conspiracy. When Ghostface first kills is a would-be rapist, and their would-be victim. Darlington’s higher ups use this to try to turn the public against the vigilantes, using the murders to distract from the SA reports/allegations. Especially someone catches the knife wielding figure, in a black hood on camera,.

It’ll take some tweaks, but the backstory MTV’s Scream is gonna have a connection with that of Scream films.

The killing spree supposedly committed by Brandon James will connect to what happened in Woodsboro. It all dated back when Woodsboro and Lakewood had an interstate high school football game, before Maureen Prescott’s murder. The resulting systematic coverup not only reaches Lakewood, but Woodsboro. When word reaches them, Sidney, Dewey and Gale are forced to step into the fray. Which of course puts (another) target on their backs.

As per Scream 2022, it would also be shortly after Sidney had her daughters with Mark Kincaid. And if I did my math right, Sidney could be expecting baby number three at this point. Mark himself may get involved, but I don’t see much of what he can do. He’s a Detective, but both Darlington and Lakewood are outside Mark’s jurisdiction, but I don’t think Mark would be against vigilantism. His wife is Sidney F. Prescott after all.

I already have my own answer for the killer(s) in Brandon James’ alleged killing spree. However, there's also the modern Ghostfaces. More than two in fact. Some are initially unaware of the other and catch eachother off guard, with different characters taking up the mask for their different agendas.

From simple revenge on past survivors; covering up the truth about Brandon James; to de-crediting Jules and Ophelia’s work. Or taking Baby Bella from her mothers; they all have their own reasons for donning the mask. But no matter who's behind the mask, they'll all be canon characters.

Because this is a prequel to Love’s Sacrifices, and set before Scream 2022, the only characters who are “safe” are Sidney, Dewey, Gale, Beca, Chloe, Stacie, Aubrey and Bella.

Pairings include…

1. Bellas Squared. Since this is a Love’s Sacrifices prequel, it without saying. It starts out being Bechloe and Staubrey, but over the story we see two pairs of two become four. It’s not a spoiler if it’s Foregone Conclusion.

2. I’m kind of flip-flopping between Emery or Braudrey. Neither are set in stone.

I’ve also been planning on a crossover ship with Noah and Kennedy, though I’m not to big on them rebounding off eachother. I’d just like to see their dynamic.

3. Sidney is with Mark in this story, though I don’t know if they’ll be a prominent romance. I want to write Dewey x Gale, but I’m kind of desensitized by how they broke up between movies. Even at my most optimistic, Forgone Conclusion weighs them down too much.

4. I am currently aiming for a Julphelia endgame, but I like their canon boyfriends (Tyler and Evan), so it’s not like I’m gonna demonize them or anything. And I'm not the kind of writer who'd just have Jules and Ophelia hook-up after killing off their SO's. Not my speed.

I’ve also considered including Scream Resurrection in the crossover, but as of this post, I couldn’t think of a believable reason to include it’s characters.

Only about half the story is thought out, and I’m to think out the rest come Scream VI. This is just the stuff set in stone.

I finished The Mars House last night and have been trying to gather my thoughts beyond ADJFAWEHDHA; and AHHHHHHHH. Let's see how this works out.

In a lot of ways this is a pretty typical Natasha Pulley book, which makes you love complicated people who have done bad things, possibly for good reasons and possibly not. The love interest is to all appearances a xenophobic nationalist, but you better believe I loved Gale pretty much immediately.

In other ways this book is different from her past work—obviously there's the far future setting, but it's pretty clear that Pulley wanted to Say Something about gender with The Mars House. This book is a response to and shots fired at the terf ideology and it is not at all subtle about it. And of course, it's a Natasha Pulley book, so there's still empathy for the far-future Martian terfs.

So I would definitely call it the most...political? of her books, which for me was not at all a bad thing. It has everything that I love about Pulley novels—her gorgeous use of language, her ability to wring beauty and pathos out of the small and ordinary, the gay pining, the morally dubious main characters. I've seen reviews say both that the science is ridiculous and that the book is hard science fiction, and I would come down on the side of the science probably being a bit ridiculous, since it's definitely not hard science fiction (lol at the reviewers who are throwing that term around and not knowing what it means). I actually have no idea if the science is plausible or not and I honestly don't care, because that's really not the point of the book.

Anyway, now I'm just going to list things. Doing a read more for spoilers! And I'm not joking, I'm going to spoil the whole book under here so really, if you haven't read it and you care about that, don't keep reading.

The worldbuilding was so good. I mean, this is one of Pulley's strengths, but I had wondered how it would stack up in a sci fi novel versus her historical fiction. As usual, everything was so visceral and textured. Tharsis and Songshu feel like real places I could visit.

THE MAMMOTHS OMG OMG. When they decided to ask the mammoths for help pulling up the gravity train, I almost jumped up from the couch yelling (I would have, but I couldn't disturb my cat who was on my legs). The entire idea of communicating with mammoths and studying mammoth society almost made me cry. Having spent even a tiny amount of time around elephants in the wild, all of that rang 100% plausible. And true in my heart.

I need a sequel where River and January go to Alpha Centauri to talk to the aliens that the Penglai mission is going to find there.

I'M ABOUT TO SPOIL THE ENTIRE BOOK SO DON'T READ ANYMORE IF YOU DON'T WANT THAT.

Speaking of River, yeah I guessed that "Aubrey" was actually River. The clues were well done and I felt smug when I was right.

But!! I actually thought River knew more than they did! A literal chill went up my back when River revealed they had NO IDEA AUBREY WAS LITERALLY IN THEIR ROOM WITH THEM.

The scene in River's bathtub had me screaming crying throwing up.

Is Natasha Pulley working through something re: waifish orphans? I knew Yuan was going to end up being adopted into House Song within pages of their (his?) introduction.

I love that we never find out if River is biologically male or female. I love that January says it doesn't matter and he means that and never tells us.

Speaking of gender abolition, can I have that please for myself.

All of the animals were, as always, a delight. Shoutout to the puffin at the beginning who we never see again, as well as Shuppiluliuma in her basket.

The ancient Mediterranean references littered through this book (see above) were also a delight.

When you think about it, both of Aubrey's consorts fell for River, and that's funny.

The flashes of love between River and Aubrey were devastating.

The haptic implants are a dystopian nightmare and absolutely a realistic prediction of where we're going to end up.

Hunched over on herself, Aubrey had thought she was alone while she mourned the loss of the poor tiefling that had died under her care. She still had the blood coating her hands as she wrapped her arms around her middle, head lowered down as she silently cried. What she didn't expect, was for Gale to come find her...

Leaping forward with a yelp of surprise, Aubrey spun to look at Gale with wide, golden eyes... and quickly reached to swipe away her tears, effectively smearing blood on her face now. Trying to explain it away, trying to tell him not to worry about her, his words that followed were enough to have her tears building all over again, one streaking down her face as she attempts a wobbly smile.

"Thank you that... that's very kind.." she manages to speak, sniffling as she wiped at her eyes again, entirely unaware of what she was doing in her actions. "I just... wish I could have done more... that's all."

Another wave of pain from the Netherese orb shot through Gale, causing the wizard to stumble and clutch his chest in a desperate attempt to contain the agony. Oh, it felt as if a displacer kitten was playing with his innards as a cruel toy.

No, he could no longer entirely hide this condition from her. He was so afraid of being cast out by the group if he revealed his needs; they were so low on materials to begin with. Gale had hoped that he would come across a ring, a trinket of some sort blessed by the Weave, but his pain was stifling his search.

"I have a condition, no spell can cure. Oh, I have tried. I- I require magical items to contain it. I must consume the Weave within, or else it may consume me, and believe me when I say that would be perilous to us all if I am unable to contain my condition."

There was a sense of begging in his words amid the warning. He sincerely hoped that Aubrey would understand.
