The smallest otter species is the Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus), measuring in at 65-90 cm (25-35 inches) long, including tail. Unlike most other otters, their front feet are only partially webbed, which along with their short claws contributes to their extreme dexterity. They're known for being playful, charismatic, and social.
Small-clawed otters are considered vulnerable by the IUCN. In addition to threats like habitat loss, reduced food supply, and climate change, these otters are also increasingly impacted by the illegal pet trade.
From Stardust to Stardust -
Asian small-clawed otter for a client :) Thank you so much! I already drew a Giant river otter and it's so cool to see the difference O:
Asian small-clawed otters behind the scenes at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
This charismatic beast is the smallest otter species in the world, but they're threatened by poaching (for the pet trade, though they make horrible pets) and rampant habitat loss and pollution in their native Southeast Asia. Turns out estuaries are a great place for humans to build cities....
(note- I am an intern at the Zoo, this view is not afforded to the public and you should never get this close to wild otters! Keep wild animals wild!)
We may see those 2 boys named Rusty and Vega at Catilandi. They're Rusty and Vega, but they were playing together, and reading interesting books at the public library. They met Billie, their friend in the first place and they are just a "trio".
Rusty is a capybara who is independent and tough-talking boy at all times. He likes to soak in the water, playing tag with Vega, meeting Billie, his younger sister, and reading books in the library, and he dislikes Vega's antics, mud, bugs, and snakes (especially anacondas). He is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Billie is an Asian small-clawed otter who is caring and friendly to her older brother, Rusty. She likes collecting shells, discovering the beach, swimming and being nice to her big brother. She is voiced by Diamond White.
Vega is an African painted dog who is daring and playful at playing sports. He also does playing fetch with Rusty, training, reading books with Rusty, chewing on toys and dog tricks. And at last, he met Clarissa the maned wolf, his obedient girlfriend for his love interest. He is voiced by Miles Bakshi.
World Otter Day is celebrated every year on the last Wednesday of May. This day was founded by the International Otter Survival Fund (IOSF). In 2009, it started as Otterly Mad Week and became International Otter Awareness Day in 2014. In 2016 the annual event evolved into World Otter Day. World Otter Day is observed to raise awareness about otters and their protection.
World Otter Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, 25 May 2022.
