There Are New Suns: Dal Niente + Ana García Jácome & Ariella Granados

There are new suns is a co-curated program of interdisciplinary and experimental performance works highlighting the edges of access, disability, and race. This is the third shared program between Dal Niente and other Chicago artists.
This program is curated by Alejandro Acierto and Jose Luis Benavides, and features works by Yun Lee, Jay Afrisando, Ana Garcia Jácome, Carolyn Chen, and Ariella Granados, with performances by Ariella Granados and Dal Niente members Alejandro Acierto, Zachary Good, and Mabel Kwan.
The program opens with Yun Lee’s Space C, a poetic gesture that relies on audio descriptions of a site inaccessible to the audience. Creating an imagined “third space”, Lee’s audio descriptive conventions articulate an audio environment similar to the performance venue yet not quite the same, blurring the sites of performance that are both unavailable to the audience and ever-present in its live performance. Working directly with audio captions as a central component of his work, Jay Afrisando’s videos from his [SOUNDSCAPTION] series invite viewers to imagine sounds as they are displayed in text on the screen. Based on phone footage from 2016-2020 and made at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, his videos respond to the prevalence of audio captioning used in Zoom calls (and now TikTok videos) that became a pivotal point of access for those communicating online in languages that were not native to them.
In her video essay, Malitas: women, disability and medical violence, Ana García Jácome moves us to reconsider histories of disability in Mexico that asserts a focused politic around the systems of access and how race and gender become impacted by those negotiations. Conversely, Carolyn Chen’s adagio features performers exuding complex facial expressions as they respond to an in-ear recording barely audible to the audience. A piece that translates feeling through the performing body, it gestures towards the transcendence of sound as a medium. Lastly, Ariella Granados performs a not-yet-titled improvisational work that recalls their first encounters with language and access to highlight distinct moments of their immigrant family’s experiences with language barriers.
There are new suns thus poetically and creatively describes multiple conditions of disability to speculate alternative relationships to sound, image, and language. Or, as Octavia Butler writes, “There is nothing new under the sun, but there are new suns.”

Davyn was born into a merchant family during the 14th century. Luckily for him, he was born during a prosperous time for his family who did well in the Hanseatic League. The Hellströms, along with other merchant families in the league, dominated the Baltic and enjoyed the wealth that they raked in. His mother and father were hard working people that spoiled their only son. As a result, Davyn became a wealthy playboy who did whatever he felt like doing. Sometimes that meant sailing out for several months on one of his father’s trade ships or drinking in a different city without leaving a word. He was a troublesome boy.
His parents thought that he would never grow out of it until he met his future wife, Clara. She was older than him and enchanted with his youthful silliness, but Davyn assumed that because she was older, she liked more mature men. When he played with others, he learned that he was a romantic with a particular way of doing things, so to keep up with his vision of love, he cleaned himself up. He started to learn his father’s work more seriously while slowly building up the courage to properly court her. This left Clara waiting and a little passed the proper age to get married, but it didn’t matter to him; she was to be his wife.
Eventually, when he was sure that he was a good enough man to be hers and worthy to be a part of her family, he proposed to her in the grandest of ways. Everyone he knew, across the cities and including all the other merchants, were alerted of his marriage. It was an event to be remembered and Davyn’s happiness only continued when they managed to have two sons. He planned to raise them in his merchant ways, much like how his father did, but Davyn and Clara never got that far.
He can’t remember why his whole family was on that ship, which was headed to another port, but they were and before they could reach land they were attacked at sea by pirates. Davyn lost his boys, his wife, and he almost lost his life until a nameless vampire found him. Maybe it was because she took pity on him or because she wanted his company, but she brought him back to land and turned him when caring for his fragile body wasn’t enough. Even though his body was no longer broken from the shipwreck, he ended up being poor company for her and she left him to deal with his newfound immortality and taste for blood alone.
As a new vampire, he threw himself into wars to satisfy his need to feed and distract himself from his grief. With time, however, bloodshed and bloodlust became boring to him as he grew into his immortality. Davyn didn’t stop himself from fighting in various wars though. The fights brought him to new places and allowed him to experience new things. The grief he had slowly faded away when he realized what immortality could mean for him. It was around his second century that he decided that living in sadness would be a waste of time and a waste of his family’s memory.
If one paid enough attention to what he did, they would realize that Davyn was a part of many wars and present in several major ones up until modern times. Depending on his mood he was the monstrous killer on the battlefield or the man who would risk everything to drag his brothers in arms back to safety. Regardless of who he chose to be, he came out of these battles more tired that he thought he would be and a little more regretful than the last time. During peace times, Davyn would visit places he had formally fought at to pay his respects and also to appreciate the aftermath.

Originally, he had come to New Orleans to fulfill a promise for the man he regards as his son. Since the promise would take decades before he could complete it, he decided to set up a life in the Big Easy. He took over the New Orleans Indoor Shooting Emporium and Center, NOISEC, for short, from an old battle buddy and then purchased a warehouse to turn into his home. Davyn puts himself out there as a trustworthy and kindhearted man, who, if caught at the wrong moment, can be quite blithe and sardonic. He has become this way after centuries of fighting and disorderly living, but he comes out of it all with great stories to tell and an air of forgotten adventure. While he isn’t as old as the Eriksons, his age has allowed him to do quite a lot and be very stupid. One would think that he would get tired of answering trivial questions, but he hasn’t and has managed to entertain himself with them. They tolerated his foreign tendencies and took care of him so in return he decided to watch over them. Now in the present, Davyn has become quite close to Nova and regards him as his own son.
