Why I think April and Leo shouldn't become an actual couple in MM

WARNING! Spoilers for Mutant Mayhem

(also btw wanted to make it clear I'm not like dissing on people that ship it and stuff, I'm just saying how I personally want to see their dynamic and relationship play out)

I wanted to discuss Leo's crush on April in the movie. With the rise (haha funny) of the follow-up show (and sequel) for Mutant Mayhem I've heard a few people talk about Leo and April potentially getting together.

Welcome to my TedTalk on why they shouldn't, but PLEASE let Leo have a normal teenage crush for the love of god-

I've really liked how they've shown their dynamic so far, and I'm so glad that Leo hasn't gotten all... 2012 Donnie-like. We're all traumatized after 2012 Apriltello, and I think we can all agree we do not need a repeat of that disaster.

What I really want to see is Leo being a kid with a crush, he's gonna be head over heels, irrational, etc. He doesn't know how to act, for christ's sake he crushed on the first human girl he ever saw! He's not exactly mature, it's his first crush. It's such a good chance for character development! He's a teenager, he has hormones.

April doesn't currently (from what we've seen) and shouldn't have to like him. I think it would be a sweet moment to show Leo that he can't make someone like him, and really nice message for younger viewers. It could be 2012 Apriltello done right! I also don't want to see April feeling "bad" for not liking him back or something, or if they do end up doing have it be made clear that she doesn't have to. In the movie, Leo makes his crush pretty obvious and April doesn't "seem" to notice really. You could also explore this as a way of her trying to not hurt his feelings, even though she only sees him as a friend.

The whole situation would be a good message for young kids, and a more relatable situation for teens. I know MM is really trying to show more "realistic" teenagers, I think this would be a great step! (not then teenagers can't get into relationships, but most people's first crush/relationship is at least a little rocky)

Leo is a kid, have some funny and cute episodes where he learns to get over his crush. Maybe have him realize he doesn't have to have a romantic relationship with April to enjoy her company? I honestly find that idea really sweet as we don't really see this type of thing done well a lot.

Of course, they could just end up having them get together in the end, yada, yada, yada... But personally I would love to see more nuance in their relationship

( Guys, I'm going to start saying that I'm remaking my fanfic "BLUE 💙", because the previous one was rubbish, so I decided to continue and that's it, I hope you like it) ...

TMNT mutant mayhem fanfiction

BLUE 💙

Chapter 1-

*Leo is writing in his notebook*

"Graduation day has finally arrived, I've never been so excited about a high school event before, mainly because this is the first one my brothers and I are going to, and even better, just knowing that April and I are going to prom together makes me I feel like the luckiest guy in the world, I can't believe it!!!!!!

Are the proms like the movies, or gala party like Titanic, when Rose comes down the stairs looking beautiful in that dress and Jack's jaw dropped?"

- Are you writing in your diary again? -

Mikey asks, interrupting Leo's writing, who screams, getting quite scared from his younger brother.

- MIKEY! How many times do I have to say that this is not a diary, it is a PERSONAL notebook of PERSONAL notes, okay?!-

- In other words, it's a diary! - Says Donnie as he enters the room wearing his purple blazer.

- Isn't it a diary?! - Leo says, starting to get annoyed and putting his phone in the back pocket of his pants.

- Yes, it is ! - Insist Mikey

- It is not! -

- YES, IS IT! - Continues Mikey, Donnie and now Raph arriving to crash.

- Raph, who called you in the conversation?! And by the way, whose side are you on?! - Approaches Leo

- Bro, I'm on the EL MACHOS side! - Raph states, raising his arms showing his strong muscles, and then takes the notebook from Leo's hands and throws it next to the messy books, everyone laughs, except Leo with his arms crossed.

- Dude, diaries are for girls! - Raph in front of the mirror

- Who said that writing down your thoughts and experiences is a girl's thing? - Leo finishes his outfit with the already perfect bow tie

- If you take this to school, you will be the subject of endless ridicule from others! - Says Donnie

- Yes, and it would be something that would never stop! - Mikey continues, and the purple turtle looks at his smiling and ignorant little brother in disbelief.

- Yeah, I don't think any of the MEN at school would hang out with someone who writes "thoughts", don't you think? - Says Raphael, finishing buttoning his short-sleeved blazer.

Leo, still with his arms crossed, reflects on it, pointing his gaze to the floor, but his attention returns to Raph finishing his look in front of the mirror, and says:

- I'm sorry, Leo Nardo, but it's a shame that not everyone is born cool and tough, like me! - He says smiling mischievously and seeing his blue brother in the mirror.

More points of reflection appear in Leonardo's mind, and he stops doubting himself... as a person.

- Come on guys, we don't want to be late for our first prom, right? - Raph leaves through the curtain happy and confident, and the other brothers leave soon, leaving Leo alone in the room, sad.

*Time skip*

When the quartet was ready to head towards the exit, a very strong beam of light surprised them and almost left them blind, until they saw their hyper-proud father taking several photos on an old camera.

- OH, DAD! - Everyone screams in annoyance

- What? I refuse to not take a photo of my boys going to prom for the first time! You are so cute! - Says Splinter

All the mutants were amazed and proud of the boys in the house, especially Splinter who continued to take photos until he ran out of camera film.

- Dad, please let us go quickly, we're going to be late! - Donnie exposes his anger.

- Okay, okay, you grumps, you can go, the camera film is already over! - Ends the mouse that throws the camera away

- Ok daddy, we love you! - Mikey says throwing kisses in the air before the turtles finally leave on their way to school

- *sighs* I'm so proud !- Splinter says with tears in his eyes.

*One hour later*

The music couldn't be better, and the decoration was admirable, and that's what the hull heroes felt when opening the stage door and having the possibility to admire everything about this important school event, which they were responsible for carrying out after the defeat, from Super-Fly.

- That's... it's... AMAZING!!!!! - Mikey shouts, jumping with his fists up, hyper excited

- Yeah, right?! I loved it!- Donnie says taking photos of the place with his cell phone

- And what are we waiting for guys, a printed invitation?! LET'S ENJOY THE PARTY!!!! - Raph shouts running to dance with his two super happy younger brothers

Both left Leo alone again, who admired the place in silence.

- Is it stopping?-

A female voice says behind him, and when he turns around, he finds April wearing a black dress with a white stripe on the boat neck, and her yellow jacket, she was wearing her purple hat, and yellow sandals.

That vision left Leo more stuck than he already was, it came at the moment of the chorus of the song

His eyes shone when he saw the girl he liked so beautiful.

The trance passed when she snapped her fingers to bring him back to earth.

Then he saw that it wasn't all a dream, and it was a perfect opportunity for him to say...

- Y-you look l-beautiful April!-

Leo stutters again, a slight facial blush then appears on the blue one's face.

- Thank you Leo! And... where are your brothers? -

- So, right... *He scratches the back of his head* Raph is attacking all the food on the table, Donnie is doing another live in TIKTOK and MIkey... - Leo looks for his little brother until he spots him - he's dancing! He points to Mikey, who moves his butt during the song without hesitation, making the duo laugh.

- Then let's join him! - April goes to Leo's back and pushes him onto the dance floor

Another song comes on, and everyone is looking for the DJ to increase the volume without regret, until she plays

and everyone vibrates with everything, most even do the steps together like this like the 90s.

- This DJ is excellent! - Mikey comments killing himself from dancing so much

April stops for a second and looks at the DJ who continued with her work

- Yes... she is! - April looks and gets a little sad

- April? Is everything ok? - Mikey asks, a little worried, making April immediately snap out of her thoughts.

- What? Oh y-yes, it's okay Mikey, relax!-

He is a little suspicious, but then leaves it alone, and everyone continues dancing.

*later*

Mikey and Donnie were seeing how handsome they were wearing suits, Raphael left the food table, now he is talking to his friends about how they defeated the villain and saved New York, especially HIM, and April and Leo continue dancing.

Leo's POV

*Leo speaking mentally*

"I've never been so happy to be with my crush, April O'Neil, *sighs* it seems like destiny, right?

Dances are perfect times for declarations of love, and I'm going to tell her, what I've been wanting to say since we saved her scooter, since we were investigating the Super-Fly, since we saved New York!

. . . . . .

But... what if she doesn't like me, like, more than a friend? .... Ah, nothing! She always invites me to investigate TCRI together, and she accepts my invitation to the dance, of course she enjoys my company! So that's it... go Leo... you can do it! You can!"

.....

So I took courage and got to the point in a subtle way.

- April, I'm so happy that you came to the dance with me? - I say while dancing like a hippie worm dancing hula

I'm a terrible dancer

- That's right, Leo, but...- she stopped, posing, thoughtfully.

- What? - I ask, still dancing

- Just as friends, right? - She finishes

the thing that throws me off the most with this design is the purple hat, her glasses being purple would’ve been a nice touch with the yellow jacket and her colour palette works quite well with her notebook below her chin but the hat just isn’t it

but that’s also just the poster apparently?

this is a bit better but her glasses almost look more out of place and the shade of green just doesn’t work with them

if they’d gone with a red for the glasses it could’ve been a nice allusion to 2003 april’s colour palette and to rise april’s glasses

idk there’s just something wrong with mutant mayhem’s colour scheme that doesn’t go together properly and the hat and glasses are just screaming at me

Some more little character sketches!

Raph gets some pretty badass moments, and his power set is pretty cool! I like how he is more of a wall of defense for the litte fellas on the team, seeing as sai were used not only for stabbing, but also defense and disarming. He reminds me of Leatherhead, one of my favorite characters from 2003, but in keeping with the general characterization of Raphael

My sister used to own a couple pairs of red sai growing up! I used to sneak into the room with all her martial arts equipment and try to mimic the katas I’d see her do when no one was around to tell me off for playing with weapons. I wasn’t all that good at it lol

Also some Dorky Pals and Dog too! I love their friendship
