11, 23, 27 for the non-usa ask again :D
11. favorite native writer/poet?
I must confess that I’ve read primarily fanfiction since highschool ended (i had to read loads of “classics” for my Abitur/highschool exam in German so that discouraged me kinda strongly to read on my own afterward). As a child, I adored Micheal Ende and Cornelia Funke - now I have heard good things about the Känguruchronicen and Walter Moers? I may read that stuff at some point??
My favorite german poet is hands down, Rainer Maria Rilke. His works are part of the romantic movement (i believe) and what can I say? I’m a hopeless romantic at heard lmao There is also a production of his poems where celebrities read Rilke's poems out loud and set to music - it is called Rilke Projekt by Schönherz & Fleer which I absolutely adore and like to listen to when I need my creative juices to flow while sowing/drawing. (Die Liebende spoken by Hannelore Elsner is one of my all-time faves like wtf?! the yearning???)
(Also also, the first time I heard of him we were in third grade (+/- 8yo) and had to copy a Christmas poem by him from the blackboard onto cards “as a present for the family” like you do... Storytime: There exists a law in Germany that every baby has to be given one name that fits their gender-proclaimed-at-birth to make sure psychological damage is minimized if the parents are on a trip or something so the child at least has one (1) fairly normal name. Gender-neutral names do exist but traditionally Maria is not one of them. Cue to us - 39 confused children - trying and failing to flesh out what gender this long-gone poet might have. After our teacher jokingly had asked us if this was a man or a woman and a hot debate later we went with ‘assigned women by us’ because, clearly, Maria was a womanly name, what kinda nonsense is “Rainer” anyways (very ye olden times) and who would name their child Maria if it was not a girl??? Sike, Rilke's mother apparently. since Rilke men sometimes have the middle name Maria and it still sounds weird to my ears sometimes lmaoo)
23. which alcoholic beverage is the favored one in your country?
...don’t laugh but I really think it might be beer?? I’m too lazy to google for proof atm so I’ll just perpetuate a harmless bais lmao
27. favorite national celebrity?
I loved Loriot as a child! I adored his humor soo much and am still grateful I could live at the same time as him for a while.
Anna Thalbach is cool, I saw her in a production of Romeo and Juliet as Juliet once and adored her (and her mother Katharina Thalbach as well, what a cool bean).

Christmas Fairytale Vote 2019 | Round 1 - Part 1
Tumblr media
The Vote is over. Princess Maleen and About the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was move on to Round 2.
How it works As mentioned on my youtube channel, I want to translate a fairytale adaptations for Christmas but I cannot decide on which one because there are so many. Usually I would do one poll but youtube only allows for five options, so this will be done in rounds. In the first round, the two movies with the most votes per part will move to the next round where they will be set against the other parts winners. In round 2, a winner and a second place of different parts of round 1 compete against one another. The winner of each poll moves on to the final round where the Christmas Fairytale Movie I will translate 2019 will be decided on. Overall you will be able to choose your winner out of 15 movies.

House of Hohenzollern & of Wittelsbach: Princess Marie of Prussia
Marie was born on October 15th, 1825, as the youngest of seven children of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia, youngest brother of King Frederick William III, and his wife Princess Maria Anna “Marianne” of Hesse-Homburg.
As a young woman, Marie was seriously considered as a wife for Duke Ernest II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the older brother of Prince Albert, until her engagement to Maximilian of Bavaria was announced. They were married on October 12, 1842. Marie would stay a protestant way until her husbands death, although Bavaria at the time was catholic. Still people of both confessions loved her. This was probably mostly because of her social commitment and her constant travel through her new home.
She was already pregnant in February after her marriage but miscarried. Later, her two sons, Ludwig and Otto, would follow. Both would become kings and both would suffer from mental illness as many of their relatives did.
One of Marie’s greatest passions was nature and with that hiking. She actually became the first female mountaineer and often took her sons with her. But when she wanted to climb the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, her husband forbid it. She would follow this order even some time after his death but would climb the mountain eventually as the eighth female mountaineer.
With the sudden death of Maximilian II on March 10th, 1864, Marie became a widow. On October 12th, 1874, exactly 32 years after her wedding, she converted to Roman Catholicism. As a widow, Marie looked after her second son Otto who was declared insane by the government. She outlived her elder son, Ludwig II, by several years. He died on 13 June 1886. He had not liked her very much, just as he disliked most of his other relatives except his cousins Elisabeth and Sophie. He had tried to avoid contact as far as possible. Marie herself died in 1889 in Hohenschwangau.

(All pictures stolen from IMDB as my elderly mother doesn’t need to have her visiting adult son pausing what she’s watching to take pictures.)
Tumblr media
Whenever I visit my elderly parents my trembly mum has always saved (“taped” she still says; but then, so do I; old habits die hard) some horror nonsense for me to watch with her. I used to think I’d watch anything, but it turns out my mum will actually watch anything. As long as it’s on the Horror Channel anyway. Movie wise that is; otherwise it’s games shows and Judge Judy. Hey, you work that hard that long and you can watch whatever you want in my book. But, what I’m getting at is no one watched Feardotcom that night because they thought it would be amazing; it was just there, like mount Everest. Other than that it’s nothing like Everest, but it is a lot like The Ring (i.e. Ringu, 1988) but with a haunted website instead of a haunted VHS cassette (ask your grandad).
Tumblr media
Loveable genre presence Udo Kier is subjected to spooky CGI in which a girl with a bouncing ball appears and he falls in front of a train and dies. BLEEDING FROM HIS EYES! Feardotcom has barely started and it’s already unoriginal, as fans of Mario Bava’s gothic confection Kill, Baby, Kill! (1966) would tell you, if you knew one (it’s the girl and the ball, not the train and the BLEEDING FROM THE EYES!) Turns out Udo’s not alone in his distinctive demise, luckily although BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! is common enough to have an ICD Code (362.81 : Retinal haemorrhage) it is unusual enough in the quantities suddenly swamping the movie’s city to suggest something’s amiss. A handsome but troubled and yet still dull cop (Steven Dorff) and a typically pre-Raphaelite beauty of a Department of Heath researcher (Natascha McElhone) team up to investigate. Is it an epidemic? Or is it the restless ghost of a serial killer’s victim seeking vengeance on torture voyeurs via a supernatural website which, once viewed, kills them 48 hours later via hallucinations of their worst fears. AND BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! The answer won’t surprise you.
Tumblr media
So you get scenes of stubbly Dorff and fragrant McElhone investigating (and, wait, is this a romance I see before my NOT BLEEDING eyes?) punctuated by people being killed by, fair’s fair, quite inventive and not entirely unsadistic, visualisations of their worst fears. So the forensic specialist (Amelia Curtis) investigating the hard drives (“My God, it’s written in ghost-Java script!”, she doesn’t say) imagines lots of insects because a lot of people don’t like insects, and dies. BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! Dorff’s boss (Nigel Terry) imagines being an actor who stars as King Arthur in John Boorman’s delightfully British Excalibur (1981) but twenty years later is way down the cast in this shit, and crashes his car. While BLEEDING FROM HIS EYES! And so on. Purely in the interests of research (yeah, right; that’s what they all say) porcelain skinned public servant Natasha McElhone views the spooky site and the race is on to save her from her own worst fears and BLEEDING FROM THE EYES! And what connection does all this have to do with Stephen Rea’s preposterously silly performance as a serial killer Dorff failed to catch in the past, and whose scenes all seem to have been shot in one day? Questions there, like anyone cares.
Tumblr media
Feardotcom is a bad movie, but a bad horror movie isn’t like a normal bad movie; it can still be entertaining, which this is. There’s the fun of rolling your non-haemorrhaging orbs at the clichés, the grudging tip of the hat to the imagination on show in the deaths, the little tickle you get when you realise someone somewhere thought they were making a SERIOUS FILM! here, the historical interest of how the Internet was perceived 16 years ago, the magic of Udo Kier, John Terry and, particularly, Jeffrey Combs being way more interesting than anyone further up the cast list can manage. And Combs is such a particular delight in this as a grubby apathetic cop, Feardotcom briefly becomes a better movie whenever he slouches onscreen. It’s still very far from good though, but still better than something as slickly dishonest as Frost/Nixon. And my mum? She said it was okay (but between you and me I think she nodded off. Bless.)
