#And Goncharov is precisely that lol

I feel like we read a lot of inbetween the lines and give the writers and creators of st a lot of credit. I mean the fans are definitely better in pulling together a plot (read: goncharov) and I am just hoping and praying that they pull through with byler in S5. It's fucking sad that we won't be getting much screen time but the show isn't really about ships (although they create a fuck ton of drama with these ships) soooooo yeah I hope they pull through because I can't handle being queerbaited for months and years. Poor Noah will have a target on his back for life.
I understand how you feel and I think many people are imagining stuff that is way more complicated than what they are actually writing in the show...
but personally, for how I am interpreting the show... I don't give them that much credit?
I think it's a VERY basic slow burn friends to lovers "love triangle" literally the most common stuff you can see on TV just this time it's queer lol
they are not doing anything really new to be honest... and if they are not doing byler... thing that to me is impossible seeing they put the Vickie & Robin parallel in the show, then they are purposefully queerbaiting and I can't do much about that possibility and in that case it's not our fault 🤔
anyway I am very confident that they will deliver byler because doing a slow burn rejection is the most stupid thing a writer could ever do...it's anticlimactic and boring as fuck and just cruel in this precise case... and I do think they are at least decent writers 🌈

it's a goddamn blaze in the dark (and you started it) the goncharov fic (katya/sofia), as promised lol; also on ao3!
“I think,” Katya says as the clock strikes nine, idly swirling the last of her liquor around in her glass. “You should go.”
Wisps of smoke from the ashtray on the coffee table fade into nothing. The air that drifts in through the open parlor window carries a biting chill, a sharp contrast to the unusually balmy autumn day that had seen Sofia’s arrival. All signs, just like the clock that never ceases ticking, that all things, eventually, meet their end.
That all moments come to an end, now matter how much it aches to let them go.
(And if there is mercy, they will end with fading, and not by blood. Mercy is rare in a life like this, but one can still hold onto a hope that it might be possible.)
In the opposite chair, with hands folded over crossed legs, Sofia regards her with a tilted head and a raised brow. Teeth drag over a full bottom lip as her mouth curls into a smirk; her legs shift, leaving a just barely visible hint of what’s underneath her skirt.
Katya swallows, seeking some relief for a throat, quite suddenly, gone dry. (She doesn’t entirely succeed.) It takes a moment before she attempts, once again, to venture into the silence. “My husband —”
“Doesn’t return until tomorrow,” Sofia cuts in before the sentence can even attempt to end. Her voice is sharp, but also, in its own way, delicate; Katya briefly wonders if this is what it’s like to be on the end of her knife. (She briefly wonders if that’s somewhere she would like to be.) “What are you afraid of, Katya?”
The pounding of her own heart is the only sound that reaches Katya’s ears. Her breath is caught in the space between moments destined to end, in the space between what’s possible and what shouldn’t be. The space between Katya Goncharova, the unfailingly dutiful wife, and —
What are you afraid of, Katya?
Memories, half-tangible things from another life that now mostly exist in her dreams, linger now, in the space between. In her mind’s eye, there’s her grandmother before her, with her crow’s feet, laugh lines, and knobby grip. Her smile comes with tears, and her voice wavers, but the final words are clear enough to transcend time: “My dear Katya, you are fearless. Never let this world change you.”
Fearless. She is fearless.
She’s so tired, she thinks, of pretending she’s someone she is not. And there’s still a window now, not quite closed, to reclaim what had been lost before the chance vanishes forever.
All things must come to an end; it’s best to grab them with one’s own hands before they do.
Katya’s glass settles onto the surface of the coffee table with a clink. Her heels sidestep the edges of the table with the methodical precision that makes her the perfect wife, leading her down an imperfect path.
Sofia is doing her best, she knows, to betray nothing, but her eyes — oh, her eyes have widened just the slightest amount to make her surprise obvious. It’s Katya’s turn to allow a smile, a smirk, to tug at the corners of her mouth as she lowers herself to straddle Sofia’s lap. As a hand grips each shoulder, and she breathes, low and hot against Sofia’s ear:
“Who said I was afraid?”
That’s all the warning Sofia receives before Katya takes what she wants, diving in to capture the other woman’s mouth with her own.
With a gasp as sharp as the knife that Katya can feel poking against her thigh, Sofia parts her lips, letting her in — and Katya plunges ahead, taking what she wants. Fearless. Licking into her mouth, she lets her fingers trace the line of Sofia’s jaw before they thread through her hair, tugging on it.
The blade nicks the skin on her thigh, drawing blood, but that, like the buzz just under the surface of her skin, or the warmth pooling in her core, doesn’t matter — because that, like everything else, steadily gets lost to oblivion.
As all moments do, this one, too, will eventually end. But a flame always burns bright before it flickers out.
That, of course, is the optimistic end.

i love how there's the genre of fix-it fic where the author goes into great granular detail of how our heroes manage to avoid or undo whatever character death or other unpopular choice occurred, in a way that abides by the laws of the fictional universe and definitely required a substantial plot outline, and then there are fix-it fics where the author just went "that's bullshit and didn't happen," and we as readers all go "agreed. carry on."

the thing about cracking open a long-established popular ship tag on ao3 is that it allows you to be extraordinarily picky, and i think it must be the closest thing i will ever experience to being filthy rich. i scroll along at super speed like no today i am only interested in fics with this precise range of words and one of these three tags. only authors i’ve heard of, please. hmm, i suppose i could consider an unknown quantity given its apparent popularity with the people, but… no, no, this summary doesn’t do it for me. no particular reason, it’s just… eh, i don’t need to explain myself. bring me 50 more like this for me to choose from and we’ll see.

Sith Obi-wan Kenobi is the most lethal of the enemies, not because he is powerful on the force like Sidius or Vader, but because he has charm, he makes allies, his control over his own power is precise, deadly precise, he has the Jedi training integrated on his body and (depending on how far in his life he is and how canon you want to count his life of absolute misery during his padawanship) years upon years of experience that not many in the galaxy can say that they have and much less survive out of it, he was set on a pad of Infinite Sadness, and he took it, made his feelings fester and grow until one day he decided that he was done, his Fall was a surprise to everyone but himself
I love this song See, THIS is why I like the Sith Obi-Wan AU idea. I think Obi-Wan has a lot of motivation not to fall, but I also think he has a lot of potential points in his life where he could if the wrong thing happened at the wrong time. And if he did, everyone would be fucked, because ALL THESE REASONS.
I love thinking about things like always-a-Sith!Obi-Wan as a general leading the Separatists, I've read a couple good fics like that, but I also like imagining that conversation between Obi-Wan and Dooku going very differently in Attack of the Clones. If Obi-Wan was just a little more tired, or frustrated, if Dooku had focused all his attention on his grandpadawan and taken the sympathetic tack instead of dangling (true) intel because he knew Obi-Wan would never believe it...I don't know, it's a fun what-if to consider.

Hiii I’m Obi-Anon!! About the Anakin god thingy is just because he is son of the Force but you are right is closer to the anti-Christ or straight up Eldrich anomaly lol
Honestly would love to see more fics or art with Anakin as an eldritch manifestation of the Force while he's a little kid, although neither Shmi nor Obi-Wan deserves him being all creepy.
It would be very funny though if his Force powers started manifesting really hard for a short time when he was a little kid. Floating a couple inches off the floor instead of walking until Shmi asks him to stop, things like that. Just doesn't mention this to Obi-Wan or any of the other Jedi because he assumes everyone goes through the "floating instead of walking" phase.

I'm not even watching the tags, but the posts I've seen on my dash from the sudden Goncharov fandom seem to be encapsulating all the essential elements:
Posts doing deep-dive analyses into cinematography, costuming, characterization, music, and other aspects of this piece of forgotten cinema
Artistic gifsets and fanart and fics
The Ship Wars
This feels like if Christopher Guest had made a mockumentary about a Tumblr Movie Fandom.

My #1 post of 2022
Cal Kestis is Obi-wan’s son, I just know it he was to be!! What other redhead is there that can look so similar to pawadan Obi?! Or is the lack of sleep finally catching up with me?!
Look
Look
"Cal Kestis is Obi-Wan's son" is my favorite Star War conspiracy theory. The timing works out perfectly if Obi-Wan had a delightful evening with a lovely woman on whatever planet he and Qui-Gon visited before Naboo. And no shade to those who love them but I really don't care much at all about Satine or Korkie or especially Korkie's parentage
At this point unless they disprove it in canon I'm just embracing the madness that is Cal Kestis Kenobi.

Dostoyevsky’s Psychological Ability
Tumblr media
A bit of wild (very, very hypothetical) theorizing here.
So, with the reveal of Sigma’s... amnesia, we can presume that he was either created by the book (Fyodor bringing his OC to life, which seems very Fyodor) or that he was a normal person (somewhat similar to Chuuya’s mysterious origin before becoming Arahabaki’s host) completely modified by... something. The book, or Fyodor.
Tumblr media
I’m going to run with the latter because it’s more interesting to me, and because it parallels Sigma with Goncharov (and they already have a somewhat similar mindset, as pointed out by my friend @trashyhumanespresso). It seems likely that Fyodor’s ability is something that somehow targets human brains, which fits on a meta level with Fyodor’s namesake, with his foils, and with his strategies.
Thus far in the story, we've seen Fyodor get Ace to hang himself:
Tumblr media
Kill a kid by touching his head:
Tumblr media
Get rid of the part of Goncharov's brain that feels sadness:
Tumblr media
Explode a police officer's skull:
Tumblr media
And now, he might have completely altered Sigma’s memories (I’m totally aware he very well might have used the book to do this but. It’s more interesting to me if the book is not involved lol so that’s what I’m running with but, who knows, either could be the case).
Tumblr media
We don’t know how Fyodor’s ability precisely works--whether he manipulates their brains/exploits already-present weaknesses/targets certain parts of the brain--but it definitely involves Fyodor having to touch someone. Which brings to mind his foil also emphasized this chapter (see here for a great meta on Fyodor and Dazai’s foiling by @linkspooky): Dazai, whose ability also requires him to touch someone to enact it.
Tumblr media
Fyodor’s match with Dazai is fascinating, as he cannot manipulate nor harm him thanks to Dazai’s No Longer Human instantly nullifying his ability. It also carries symbolic weight: while Dazai’s touch removes a person’s ability, keeping him isolated, Fyodor’s likely literally seems to bring death, which is symbolic of the nihilism he drowns himself in and that Dazai, thanks to Odasaku and his work at the AMA, resists even against his instincts towards it. Dazai is the one character Fyodor is not able to rattle, which means he’s likely key to stopping Fyodor.
In real life, Fyodor Dostoyevsky was a psychologist before Freud even wrote his theories, and he’s still held up as one of the most psychological writers in all of literature. Nietszche referred to Dostoyevsky as “the only psychologist from whom I had something to learn” (ohhh snap Freud) in Twilight of the Idols. Dostoyevsky’s works constantly explore humanity’s psychology at an individual and societal level, and are frequented with references to madness/mental illness as well.
Similarly, Fyodor is targeting the ability-users as individuals and also the larger society surrounding them. For society, he’s particularly aiming to dismantle the three-part agreement Natsume arranged between the Port Mafia, Armed Detective Agency, and the government. First the cannibalism plot pitted the mafia and the AMA against each other, and they were only able to solve it by working together. Now the government is set against the AMA via framing the AMA for that official’s murder, the mafia saves the AMA but at the cost of influencing more conflict over Mori lying about Fukuzawa’s agreement that he can take Yosano, and the mafia itself is now dealing with Tachihara’s betrayal and Gin’s injury (she is not dead), and now the AMA wants to ally with the Hunting Dogs but I doubt that’ll go super smoothly.
As for individuals, I’ll discuss Dazai more in a moment, but: Fyodor’s ability also has potential to foil another character given a fair amount of focus this arc: Yosano. His ability brings death, and her ability brings life even from already-existing pain, which it amplifies but results in them healing, which is symbolic of BSD’s overall message on life: it hurts, it can almost kill you, but it’s still healing in some ways. It is also symbolized by the butterflies associated with her, as butterflies symbolize rebirth, and as @aspoonofsugar has theorized, she also may not actually need to have them so close to death before healing them. (“Thou Shalt Not Die” is named after a poem Yosano Akiko wrote to express her pacifistic beliefs, after all, which seems interesting given that she has to hurt people to heal them.) Anyways, this would also explain Fyodor’s manipulation of the Hunting Dogs and the Port Mafia (as I’d be surprised if he didn’t know about Yosano’s past with Mori) to target her psychologically.
Tumblr media
As for individuals, obviously Fyodor is going to target Dazai somehow at some point in an attempt to defeat him. He already surreptitiously is, through the Hunting Dogs dynamic and Tachihara’s betrayal (I doubt he didn’t know) which led to Gin being stabbed, which affects Akutagawa and thereby Dazai.
All of this brings to mind the intense parallels with Dazai/Fyodor and Mimic/Odasaku, in which all the leader of Mimic wanted was to die facing his own abilities in Odasaku and caused chaos to get it--particularly through targeting orphans under his care. Given that every arc thus far has ended in some kind of Shin Soukoku fight, plus given what happened to Gin and his promise to Atsushi, Akutagawa and Atsushi are particularly at risk here. However, they aren’t helpless, and Dazai surely plans for them to take Fyodor down--and they will, in the end.
