His world faded to black around him, pain vanishing in the same instant. When he opened his eyes again, he was stood in front of golden-white gates, his back suddenly heavier than it was when he wore his armour. He didn’t dare look away from the gates, confused as to what they were, and unknowing as to where he was. It was best to be vigilant of places others could approach from. That is why he definitely didn’t jump into the air when a voice booms out above him, distinctly different from the one he was familiar with receiving orders from.

It lacked words, but he got an explanation of where he was, and was granted the choice to watch over his daughters that were still alive, which he took gratefully.

An Archangel named Michael approached him after some years, introducing himself to the silent, dead soldier. His gaze didn’t move from the vision into the living world, feeling the need to watch over his girls even now. Michael soon gave up trying to make conversation, thinking the soldier to be ignoring him.

His dark hair had grown upwards and lightened in colour after his death, with magnificently coloured wings sprouting out of his back. He no longer needed to eat, or drink, or follow orders. He got in on a technicality, those he had killed in battle were not murdered — a distinction that had been made clear to him many a time in both life and death. He had ensured no suffering for each death.

He was one of few of their time that made it into the Silver City.

He met Anatu, becoming fast friends with the fellow soldier. After years of being referred to as something else, he gained the name Baba.

He watched his daughters grow old and die, confused and hurt when neither of them showed up where he was like he did.

After a millennium had passed, Baba was bored enough and brave enough that he decided to propose an idea to the Archangels. As Baba was one of few human souls that had wings and retained his human appearance despite it, he suggested that he should visit the living world every century, for no longer than a day each time, in order to be able to reliably keep Heaven up to date on worldly events. They occasionally got new arrivals, but this would speed up the process. They accepted the proposal, consulting The Metatron for the final answer. Not even an earthly week later, he was walking the earth again.

Over the years, Baba settled into a something with Anatu, finding comfort in the other man’s presence, while Anatu found peace in Baba’s chaos. There weren’t enough words to describe what they felt, but the feeling was conveyed regardless.

It was shown in the way that Baba would bring him souvenirs every time he went down, or in the meals cooked and shared together.

It was shown in the way that Baba always insisted on dancing or moving about to the sound of music, and in the way that Anatu hummed tunes in order to see the dancing.

It was in the way that when Adam and Uriel approached the two of them about joining the exorcists, Baba spat curses at the two like venom, and Anatu supported everything he said.

It was in the way that when asked why they shared a living space together, even sleeping in the same room, the answer was a very confused “why wouldn’t we?”

It was in the gentle silence in which one could hear Baba writing on dried leaves, and carving ideas into wax, while Anatu moulded clay with his hands, creating works of art and remaking them with the same clay.

It was in the way that it became easier for them to just move their sleeping areas together after a while, not bothering with getting two separate beds any time that technology advanced.

It was in the way that every time a newcomer questioned one of them about their arrangement, the Cherubim and the Archangels swiftly arrived and shushed them.

It was in the way that Anatu had days where his senses were assaulted by the noise and brightness of the influx of Blessed, and Baba worked to find a solution in soundproofing their home.

It was in the way that they eventually changed their names from the ones given to them millennia ago, into ones honouring deities from after their deaths. Baba became Hermes, after being questioned on if he was the god of messengers one too many times. Anatu became Hypnos, after a passing joke from a younger Blessed about how he seemed like he would be the closest thing to sleep personified with how boring the youngling found his speaking.

It was in the way that, having a spare room, the two of them housed many younger Blessed until their older relatives could look after them again. Hermes would be called baba for a name by those children, while Hypnos got called a variety of titles, ranging from his name to father or even mother. Each time a new youngling was brought into their care, some Blessed would try to kick up a fuss, only to be reprimanded and reminded by Archangels Michelle and Gabriel that the two men were opening their home to those in need while others tended to keep to themselves.

It was in the slow mornings, and calm evenings, after spending their days working to help others and somewhat ease the load off of the Archangels.

It was in the whispered assurances late at night, whenever one of them got caught in their head.

It was in the learning curve for both of them to help the other with his hair, or fur in the case of Hypnos.

It was in the way that when Hermes tried to adopt Jesus away from the crowds that surrounded him for being directly related to the Almighty, Hypnos only set a curfew for when Jesus had to go back to his own home after making sure that the younger man was eating right.

It was in the way that when the Silver City grew fuller and exponentially more overwhelming, they both moved to an abandoned area in space. Hermes stopped going back to Earth so often. Hypnos felt selfish about him cutting back on the trips he enjoyed so much.

It was in the way that when the two learned about the current pronoun options on Earth, they both tested all of them out and used what stuck most.

It was in the way that when Saint Peter appeared in their home of space with a newly dead child in tow, Hypnos immediately began fretting over them while Hermes questioned the younger Blessed.

It was in the way that Hermes swiftly threatened to invert Peter when he continually referred to xer new child as ‘it’. They gave the child the name of Apollo, for their love of music and their ability to create and manipulate light.

It was in the way that when Peter returned to their home trying to take Apollo back to Silver City, Hypnos fought with desperation to keep him away from their child.

It was in the way that when Hypnos was kicked aside after his halos were shattered, destroying any capacity for the ancient bat Blessed to be able to see, Hermes went to his side, covering Apollo with xer wings as xe did so.

It was in the way that when Hermes’ wings were ripped out of his back, leaving deep wounds, and one of xer two halos were shattered, while the other was moved to fit around his throat, Hypnos had to be held back from killing Peter.

It was in the way that the two of them Fell from Heaven together, after Hypnos claiming that the Almighty wouldn’t want two of the oldest Blessed to suffer like that.

It was in the way that Hermes learned to make noise to get Hypnos’ attention after their Fall before touching xer partner.

It was in the way that Hypnos searched for weeks to find scar healing cream for Hermes’ back and face, going to Sloth for it as a surprise for his partner.

It was in the way that Hermes rarely sings anymore, but when he does, Hypnos is the only one to hear xem.

It was in the way that Hermes found out that he could go back to Heaven despite their Fall, and yet never goes back fully because Hypnos can’t go with xem as easily.

It was in the way that Hypnos suggested creating a shelter for Hellborn and Sinners who were homeless, after knowing the way that Hermes’ heart ached to help them.
