Even if you're paying for the product, you're still the product
Tumblr media
There’s something oddly comforting about the idea that “if you’re not paying for the product, you’re the product,” namely, the corollary: “If you can afford to pay for a product, you won’t be the product.” But it’s bullshit. Companies don’t make you the product because you don’t pay — they make you the product because you can’t stop them.
The theory behind “if you’re not paying for the product…” is that old economist’s saw: “incentives matter.” Companies that monetize attention are incentivized to manipulate and spy on you, while companies that you pay just want to make you happy.
This is a theory of corporate behavior grounded in economics, not power, a creature of theory and doctrine that never bothers to check in with the real world to see how that theory and doctrine map to actual events. Reality is a lot uglier.
Apple has blanketed the planet with billboards and print and online ads extolling its privacy-forward system design (e.g. “Privacy. That’s Iphone.”). There’s something to this: in 2020, the company made it very easy to opt out of third-party Ios surveillance, and 96% of its users opted out:
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2021/05/96-of-us-users-opt-out-of-app-tracking-in-ios-14-5-analytics-find/
That decision cost Facebook $10 billion in a single year, and the losses keep coming. Facebook launched a campaign that accused Apple of privacywashing an anticompetitive maneuver, claiming that Apple didn’t care about its users’ privacy, they just wanted to eliminate competition for Apple’s own ad brokerage:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/12/facebooks-laughable-campaign-against-apple-really-against-users-and-small
Facebook’s campaign poses itself as the true champion of its users, accusing Apple of shamming. It’s laughable. Facebook manifestly despises its users and proves that fact every day in a thousand ways, large and small. Facebook’s true objection to Apple’s privacy tools is that they reduced Facebook’s earnings by $10b. Obviously.
But that doesn’t mean that Facebook is wrong about Apple’s cynicism. Apple exercises enormous control over its users. It’s a direct control. Apple blocks you from installing software of your choosing or from using third-party repair services of your choosing. They pour millions into engineering to make this technically challenging, and lead a coalition of large corporations that kill right to repair legislation whenever it is mooted:
https://doctorow.medium.com/apples-cement-overshoes-329856288d13
Some of Facebook’s critics accuse it of exercising similar control, but via a far more insidious method: they say that Facebook’s voracious surveillance of its users, combined with machine learning, allows Facebook to control its users’ minds, stripping them of their free will and turning them into algorithm-addled zombies who do whatever Facebook directs them to do.
This is an extraordinary claim, given that every previous claim of mind-control turned out to be bullshit, from Mesmer to MK Ultra. The best evidence for these mind-control claims comes from Facebook’s own marketing materials, where the company assures advertisers that they should spend their money on FB’s platform because of its mind-control features.
When FB critics repeat these claims, they’re engaged in “criti-hype,” Lee Vinsel’s useful coinage describing criticism that serves to bolster the target’s own propaganda. If FB are evil geniuses, well, at least they’re still geniuses.
https://sts-news.medium.com/youre-doing-it-wrong-notes-on-criticism-and-technology-hype-18b08b4307e5
Some Facebookers doubtless believe their own hype, but that doesn’t mean we have to join them in self-delusion. We can criticize Facebook for seeking control over its users, and for using that control to do things that serve its own interests at the expense of its users’ interests.
https://onezero.medium.com/how-to-destroy-surveillance-capitalism-8135e6744d59
That’s the true sin of Big Tech: using deception and coercion to control users. Companies that gain this control can be reliably expected to use it in whichever ways they can get away with. They are paperclip-maximizing artificial life-forms bent on devouring the human race, not ethical actors.
Apple’s commitment to privacy is best understood as instrumental. Apple thinks that protecting your privacy will attract your business, and they’re right. I would like to have privacy! But while Apple can increase its revenues by telling you they’ll protect your privacy, they can increase them even more by lying about it.
That’s just what they do. Earlier this month, a small security research firm called Mysk released a video revealing that when you tick the box on your Iphone that promises “disable the sharing of Device Analytics altogether,” your Iphone continues to spy on you, and sends the data it collects to Apple:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JxvH80Rrcw
The data Iphones gather is extraordinarily fine-grained: “what you tapped on, which apps you search for, what ads you saw, and how long you looked at a given app and how you found it.”
https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-analytics-tracking-even-when-off-app-store-1849757558
It doesn’t stop there: “The app sent details about you and your device as well, including ID numbers, what kind of phone you’re using, your screen resolution, your keyboard languages, how you’re connected to the internet — notably, the kind of information commonly used for device fingerprinting.”
The researchers had to jailbreak an Iphone in order to find this lie. Apple has gone to extraordinary lengths to make jailbreaking illegal. Apple claims that allowing users to disable the locks on their phones will make them vulnerable to bad actors who will install deceptive, coercive software.
That is true, but it’s also true that these locks make it impossible to determine whether Apple’s software is deceptive and coercive. The walled fortress that keeps you safe from third parties is also a walled prison that leaves you at the mercy of the warlord who owns the fortress.
Once a company attains a certain scale, it becomes too big to jail, and then it monetizes you however it can. If you think the future of technology is battle is between Google’s approach and Apple’s, think again. The real fight is between the freedom to decide how technology works for you, and corporate control over technology.
https://locusmag.com/2021/01/cory-doctorow-neofeudalism-and-the-digital-manor/
Apple and Google are like the pigs and the men at the end of Animal Farm: supposed bitter enemies who turn out to be indistinguishable from one another. Google also has “privacy” switches in its preference panels that do nothing:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/01/you-are-here/#goog
Indeed, there are so many places in Google’s location privacy settings where you can tick a box that claims to turn off location spying. None of them work. A senior product manager at Google complained to her colleagues that she had turned off three different settings and was still being tracked:
https://twitter.com/jason_kint/status/1398359580275523590
Apple is now the subject of a California class action suit over its deceptive practices, which violate the California Invasion of Privacy Act.
https://www.bloomberglaw.com/public/desktop/document/LibmanvAppleIncDocketNo522cv07069NDCalNov102022CourtDocket
As Gizmodo’s Thomas Germain notes, Apple has a good — if self-serving — reason to spy on its users. It has launched its own ad network, and is selling advertisers the ability to target its customers based on their activities:
https://gizmodo.com/apple-iphone-privacy-analytics-class-action-suit-1849774313
Companies will only protect your privacy to the extent that it is more profitable than not doing so. They can increase those profits by advertising privacy promises to potential customers. They can increase them more by secretly breaking those promises, And they can increase them even more by using privacy claims to block their rivals’ spying, so they’re the sole supplier of your nonconsensually collected personal information.
That’s what’s happening with Google’s endless proposals to “increase privacy” in Chrome that block third parties from spying on users, while letting Google continue to invade our privacy:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/03/googles-floc-terrible-idea
If we want our privacy, we need both transparency (so third parties can investigate companies’ claims to protect privacy) and regulation (so cheating companies will face consequences when they’re caught by those third parties).
That’s why it’s so exciting that the FTC has announced its intention to treat privacy invasions as antitrust violations:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/12/regulatory-uncapture/#conscious-uncoupling
For so long as corporations can use technology and law to hide their misdeeds and power to avoid consequences for those misdeeds, “voting with your wallet” is as useless as opting out of Ios tracking.
We had advertising-supported media for generations — centuries — without mass surveillance. The problem with advertising isn’t incentives — it’s impunity.

hello oh great provider of art and analysis, do you have any tips on how to correctly analyse a character?
Funnily, I don't think there's a correct way to analyze media, but there are incorrect ways to do it. But my advice for sound analysis is as follows...
Look at Canon. Reference it as heavily as physically possible. Take into consideration who the author is, and what their intentions would be. Extradiegetic Analysis is extremely important. Commit to it. Do not pussyfoot around Extradiegetic Analysis. Take into consideration the story, its tone, who it's made for, who it is marketed towards, what messages it's trying to convey, how, and why. Use Occam's Razor heavily. Ground yourself, turn off "Fandom Brain", and your own personal headcanons. Remember that Characters are Plot Devices, not People- they are put in the story for a reason, and they serve a particular function within the narrative. Ask yourself what that reason is, and what that function is. It's important to get a firm grasp of the story and the characters in it before extrapolating. Ponder their relationships with themself, others, the world around them, their task at hand. Try to take into account framing, themes, motifs, and symbolism.
Grab anything that really stands out to you, see what you can do with it. Analyze why it stands out to you. Does it match your own personal experience in some way? Does it remind you of something else? Does it seem to be setting something up within the context of a story? Are the curtains blue for a reason? If not, should they be? What if they did? What function would that serve?
Analysis is largely asking questions and trying to answer them. Sometimes those questions are posed by the thing you're analyzing itself. Sometimes the question comes from your heart. Sometimes it emerges from something you've latched onto that isn't quite there - a blind spot in the narrative, missed potential, et cetera.
Again, Occam's Razor is your friend. Get very familiar with it. And... Do not consult Freud on anything. If you feel the impulse to consult Freudian analytical concepts without prompting from the narrative itself, that's the devil talking to you. Beat it to death immediately. We do not need Freudian analysis of children's cartoons. We literally do not need that. It will be wrong.
This is one I'm seeing more and more disregard for lately, especially with regards to minority headcanons... Consider the real-world implications of your analysis. I do not think it is very "woke" to headcanon unrepentant sexually abusive assholes as trans women, or characters who are known for their loudness, aggression, and abusive natures as Black. Consider optics for maybe, like, five seconds. Analysis is just as much an act of introspection as it is an act of dissecting a piece of fiction. You need to be able to ask yourself why you're seeing characters the way that you're seeing them. Sometimes that answer is latent bigotry. Unpack that. Work on it. Sometimes the answer is that the author is a bigot and trying to tell you something about the group of people a character is supposedly representative of. Acknowledge it. Unpack that. Work with it. And I mean that seriously- you cannot just skirt around bigotry without perpetuating the bigotry yourself. Analysis will, by way of the vulnerability of the practice, get uncomfortable at times. Be ready for that.
Think critically and think for yourself. A lot of people shoot themselves in the foot by being reactionary, and/or letting other people do the thinking for them. Again, analysis will get uncomfortable at times. It is vulnerable, introspective, and an act of challenging yourself and your worst habits. Commit to that.
Oh, and have fun. Yes, I just spent several paragraphs talking about how analysis is challenging and uncomfortable, but don't make yourself have a genuinely bad time on purpose. You truly do not need to give yourself an attack or episode for the sake of an internet post or something. Horror movie rules - know your limits and respect them.
That's all for now, I think. There's infinite nuance to this subject, but I believe this is a decent 101 post.

CONTINUED UNPOPULAR OPINIONS ABOUT STEP BY STEP, EPISODE 11
I will spare y’all my biting criticism with a read-more. But, TL;DR -- my review is short (for me, HA!), and I hand this show over lovingly to anyone who wants it.
(Thanks to continued conversations with the inimitable @lurkingshan and the utterly lovely @neuroticbookworm to ensure I’m not going insane with these thoughts.)
At this point, I don’t know what narrative lens we’re supposed to be watching this show through*. Maybe a few of them, together, but that is striking me as an understudied, overambitious, overworked, and confused approach to understanding this show.
Is it a queer narrative about how Jeng has been closeted-ish/held back in his public queer identification for so long that he’s turned into an inconsistent, incommunicative, distrusting putz? Is there a connection between his family being disapproving of his sexuality, and/or him running away from a filial fate of taking over his dad’s company -- and him being a bumbling asshole to Pat?
Is it a trust narrative about how Pat can’t trust ANYONE? Put, Jeng, Jeng’s dad, the company, Toh? Maybe even Chot? (I’m just throwing that out there, since Chot sent him into the battlefield with Jeng during the last episode -- I love Chot, I ain’t blamin’ Chot.) (Maybe I analytically get to this narrative by... assuming Pat can’t trust anyone, since his loving, COMMUNICATIVE parents ended up getting divorced?) (And in the process of that divorce, we learn, in part, that Pat’s mom couldn’t find her full potential in life unless she was outside of the marriage?) [So maybe that’s what needs to happen to Pat? Since Jeng is CLEARLY UNDERMINING Pat’s efforts to be successful on his (Pat’s) own, in multiple ways, by really not allowing Pat to have control over his (Pat’s) own life?]
Is this a MACRO MACRO narrative commentary on the failings of BL tropes and the BL industry as a whole? (The reveal of the once-toxic Ying as a fujoshi?)
It could very well be all of these narratives at the same time. However, the execution of this storytelling, at this point, is so inconsistent and choppy that 1) I can’t exactly tell, and 2) I’m so frustrated about the amount of time that I’ve spent trying to understand this show that at this point, I don’t really want or care TO care.
To refer back to my first point (*) -- I think it’s unfair for me to demand that ANY show have a singular narrative lens. But I propose that Step By Step would have been an actually successful drama if it hadn’t tried to do so much. I’m EXTREMELY biased right now on this kind of analysis, because I’ve just finished Until We Meet Again for the Old GMMTV Challenge, and watched two narrative lenses in DeanPharm and KornIntouch come together into one cohesive story. (And, fuck, I cannot believe I’m saying this about a New Siwaj show.) I mean -- you can take filmmaking classes that can teach screenwriters and directors how to handle multiple narrative lenses successfully.
Maybe that’s the word: cohesiveness. I’m not seeing cohesiveness in Tee Bundit’s Step By Step. Instead, I watched an episode with actual minutes -- MINUTES! -- spent watching an office team held in tension as internet “likes” poured in. Looking at computers. I spent MANY MINUTES watching Jaab WAFFLE over MULTIPLE episodes going back and forth on Jen... only to discover that he missed Jen’s departure to Japan -- a Very Big Life Decision that Jaab just *missed.* Okay.
And.... we are left with the break-up of Jeng and Pat. And a time jump.
I mean.
All that growth of the previous episodes, all that slow burn, all that processing of Pat’s growth into a hopefully successful professional digital marketer. For what. No cohesive character development or a sharpening of any narrative lenses.
The last thing I’ll offer is that I understand that Tee Bundit added themes to this show that were not present in the original novel, such as the aforementioned macro commentary on the BL industry and other workplace storylines. And, starting with episode 10, he was on his complete own, outside of the novel’s romance arc (thank you to @lurkingshan for confirming this for me). I’ll theorize, therefore, that what we’ve been watching these past few weeks is a Frankenstein-ed approach to this story where the novel focused on the romance aspect of Pat and Jeng, and Tee’s been wanting to drive home themes of workplace success (I think); professional growth (I think?!); homophobia in the workplace and the harms of either being disapproved of and/or being closeted or closeted-ish in general (Jeng, Chot/Krit, Pat), plus that macro commentary on the BL industry that got edited out.
But, and I emphasize here: not a SINGLE one of these threads has been illuminated to the point of clarity. I’ve wondered in the back of my mind if Tee maybe threw the baby out with the bathwater on this show AFTER the whole ZeeNew debacle, but -- whatever. The seams on this show were fraying weeks ago, and it shows.
Again -- I can’t think much longer on this show. It’s over next week. After a break-up and a time jump. We’re on the express train to a likely happy ending that I’m going to guess will be totally unearned. I had high hopes for each episode, only to be sorely disappointed since episode 8, when the drag got so unbalanced that I started to raise red flags. I want to see a surprise turn towards good storytelling for this finale next week. I want to be proven wrong about my instincts, but I ain’t putting any of my money on it.

Initial D - The First Stage to the Overall Magic of Anime and Manga
Tumblr media
Seeing this display at my local Kinokuniya Bookstore branch made my day and got me reminiscing.
In the early 2000s', I was still in my phase of consuming everything Dragon Ball. I followed Dragon Ball GT at the time and knew it ended around 1997. Since simulcast streaming wasn't a thing, I had to rely on Chinese-dubbed VHS tapes to rent for all the episodes.
When watching one of the final episodes of Dragon Ball GT on a tape I got, there was a trailer (which was actually the opening) for another anime that played before the episode. It wasn't for a Shonen Jump series and I heard some really cool-sounding techno music.
youtube
That opening began my journey into a series that highlighted what anime and manga was really like outside of American marketing - Shuichi Shigeno's Initial D.
For those who don't know, Initial D is about a young man named Takumi Fujiwara who gets himself involved in the mountain street racing scene. He drives a car that isn't suitable for street racing, the Toyota AE86 Sprinter Trueno. The car lacks horsepower and speed, but Takumi is able to utilize amazing drift techniques to make up for it. While reluctant at first, Takumi gets pulled into a race when a street racing team called the Akagi Red Suns challenges Takumi's local team. Takumi beats one of the Red Suns' top members and he slowly becomes a legend as he encounters more street racers who want to challenge him. The manga lasted 49 volumes, had 6 anime seasons in 16 years, and a Hong Kong live-action movie adaptation of the manga (which I appreciated as a Cantonese speaker) was made in 2005. The series also inspired a good amount of people all over the world to get into Japanese cars due to every car featured in the series existing in real life. It did not hurt that fans loved the Eurobeat music that played in races throughout the anime.
As you can see from the photo I took, Kodansha USA decided to re-release the entire Initial D manga in a 2-in-1 omnibus print format for a newer generation as the original English manga release by Tokyopop in the mid-2000s' left a lot to be desired for translation reasons.
After watching the OP teaser in that one tape of a DBGT episode, I decided to watch all of the First Stage season of Initial D in Cantonese Chinese on VHS. I became hooked. I absolutely loved the music. I appreciated how analytical some of the characters were. Even though I didn't understand a lot of the conversations being had due to my Cantonese not being good enough to talk about vehicle intricacies, I had the help of Initial D fansites to summarize things. I became obsessed when the manga was ongoing at the time to see who Takumi was facing. Fansites helped to bridge the gap.
Speaking of fan-related material, I learned about yaoi/boys' love through Initial D. I saw many fanfiction sites about the relationships between the major male characters. In a sense, I got to see why sports-like series appealed to female fans way before the current sports series boom we have now.
Initial D also helped me get close with my dad. He actually watched the anime with me. During the years when I was so depressed, my dad always spent time with me. We played a lot of basketball, talk sports, and watched Initial D together. It helped that he was into car culture, so he helped explain a few things to me about certain cars.
One more thing Initial D did was that it got me to go to my very first anime convention in 2003. It was the Big Apple Anime Fest and the Third Stage movie was screened. While I watched the Third Stage movie before, it wasn't dubbed in Cantonese. This time, I got to see the full film with English subtitles. I stayed for the 7:30pm screening and was excited with so many fans around me. The convention was also where I finally got to connect with a friend who lived in the same area as me. I still talk to and hang out with them today.
While Dragon Ball got me into anime in the first place, it was Initial D that got me to expand my worldview about anime and manga. The series gave me a glimpse of the other anime/manga communities out there. I got a first glimpse into series that weren't mainstream yet loved by passionate fans.
When both the Initial D manga and anime ended in the 2010s', my anime/manga interests were in a different place. But I still enjoyed Final Stage when it came out because I got to see Takumi grow immensely over time and the payoff was good. The final battle felt like two very similar individuals trying to impose their superiority over one another. It was a perfect way to end Takumi's story, given that almost all of his opponents were different from him.
I know Initial D isn't talked about as much as Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon in terms of impacting people's lives, but it has done wonders for me in genuinely seeing what the world of anime/manga fans was like outside of the usual fare. I know I'm not the only one.
So I want to say that if the super-mainstream anime and manga series aren't your thing, it's okay. There will always be something that will catch your eye and maybe change your perspective for the better. And maybe it will find you a community that you love being around and help you grow.
To quote one of the Initial D opening songs sung by the group, m.o.v.e, let's move into the brand new world and let's dive into the brand new trip.
For more perspective on Initial D's impact on its fans and car culture, this post from a car enthusiast is worth a read.

How Innovation Is Reshaping the Food Industry
Tumblr media
Food innovation refers to introducing novel ideas, products, and technologies that change how society produces, processes, packages, distributes, and consumes food. It goes beyond merely creating new recipes or flavors - food innovation encompasses advances in agriculture, food science, sustainability, and packaging. The goal is to enhance efficiency, safety, nutrition, and the overall consumer experience.
The need for food innovation arises from the ever-changing demands of consumers and the pressing challenges faced by the industry. As the global population continues to grow, so does the demand for food. Additionally, sustainability concerns, climate change, and limited resources prompt exploring alternative food growing and production methods. Innovations in food aim to enhance food security, minimize environmental impact, and offer consumers healthier, more diverse options.
Food innovation occurs through a combination of research, collaboration, and creativity. Scientists, entrepreneurs, farmers, and food industry professionals work together to develop new technologies and processes. Research institutions and startups play a crucial role in conducting experiments, testing new concepts, and bringing innovative products to the market.
In recent years, the food industry has witnessed groundbreaking innovations reshaping how people interact with food. The plant-based movement has gained immense traction, with plant-based alternatives for meat, dairy, and seafood becoming mainstream. Companies have developed plant-based burgers, vegan cheeses, and sustainable seafood alternatives using cutting-edge technologies. Beyond plant-based options, innovations have also focused on alternative protein sources, such as insect-based proteins and lab-grown meats, offering sustainable and protein-rich alternatives.
Swedish startup Mycorena is boosting microbial protein production through its fungi-based mycoprotein called Promyc. This ingredient can be used to create meat and tuna alternatives, beverage additives, and dessert ingredients, offering plant-based and sustainable options for consumers.

Companies like New Culture are incorporating animal-free casein into their cheeses through precision fermentation. This breakthrough allows them to produce animal-free mozzarella cheese, offering a delicious and cruelty-free alternative to traditional dairy products.
In addition, consumers increasingly seek transparency in food choices, leading to the clean label movement. Brands are responding by using simple natural ingredients and avoiding artificial additives and preservatives.
Breakthrough innovations in the food industry are revolutionizing how society grows, produces, and consumes food, focusing on sustainability, nutrition, and convenience. One such innovation is plastic-free and smart packaging. Food companies are exploring biodegradable and even edible packaging solutions in response to environmental concerns. Smart packaging using nanotechnology is also gaining popularity, allowing consumers to assess food safety and quality easily.
The Internet of Things (IoT) in agriculture employs sensors and data analytics for optimizing crop conditions, irrigation, and pest control, reducing resource usage. Food waste reduction solutions, such as surplus food redistribution platforms, are being developed to combat the global food waste crisis. Moreover, biotechnology and data science advances enable personalized nutrition, tailoring dietary recommendations to individuals based on their genetic makeup, lifestyle, and health goals. These innovations promise a more sustainable, healthier, and efficient food future.
Food innovation is driving a remarkable transformation in the food industry, responding to the challenges and opportunities of today. From new plant-based products to sustainable agriculture and cutting-edge technologies, the future of food promises to be more diverse, nutritious, and sustainable. The Digital Advantage: How Digital Marketing Transforms Businesses
In today's dynamic business landscape, the shift towards digital marketing has revolutionized the way businesses connect with their audience. With its myriad of benefits, digital marketing has emerged as the preferred choice for brands aiming to make a significant impact in the competitive market. Let's delve deeper into why digital marketing reigns supreme over traditional marketing methods.
Tumblr media
1. Cost-Effectiveness: Maximizing ROI
Digital marketing offers a remarkable advantage in terms of cost-effectiveness compared to traditional marketing avenues. While traditional methods such as print or television advertising often require substantial financial investments, digital marketing enables businesses to reach a wider audience at a fraction of the cost. Through platforms like social media advertising and email campaigns, businesses can allocate their budgets more efficiently, maximizing their return on investment (ROI).
2. Targeted Audience Reach: Precision Marketing
One of the most significant advantages of digital marketing is its ability to precisely target specific demographics, interests, and behaviors of the audience. Unlike traditional marketing approaches, which cast a wide net, digital marketing allows businesses to tailor their messages to reach the most relevant audience segments. Whether it's through Google Ads or Facebook Ads, marketers can refine their targeting parameters to ensure that their campaigns resonate with the right people, leading to higher conversion rates and engagement levels.
3. Measurable Results: Data-Driven Insights
Digital marketing provides unparalleled access to real-time analytics and insights, allowing businesses to gauge the effectiveness of their campaigns with precision. Unlike traditional methods, where tracking performance can be challenging, digital marketing offers comprehensive metrics such as website traffic, conversion rates, and engagement metrics. Armed with this data, marketers can make informed decisions, optimize their strategies, and refine their campaigns to achieve better results over time.
4. Global Reach: Breaking Geographical Barriers
With digital marketing, geographical limitations become a thing of the past. Unlike traditional methods confined to specific regions or markets, digital marketing enables businesses to reach a global audience seamlessly. This level of accessibility is particularly beneficial for small businesses and startups seeking to expand their reach beyond local boundaries without the need for extensive resources.
Tumblr media
5. Interactivity and Engagement: Fostering Connections
Digital marketing thrives on interactivity, providing numerous opportunities for businesses to engage with their audience on a deeper level. Whether it's through interactive content formats like videos, quizzes, or polls, digital marketing encourages active participation, fostering stronger connections between brands and consumers. This heightened engagement not only enhances brand loyalty but also contributes to increased customer retention rates over time.
6. Flexibility and Adaptability: Agile Marketing Strategies
In the fast-paced digital landscape, adaptability is key to success. Digital marketing offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing businesses to pivot and adjust their strategies in response to real-time data and market trends. Whether it's tweaking ad creatives, refining targeting parameters, or experimenting with new channels, digital marketers have the agility to optimize campaigns on the fly, maximizing their impact and effectiveness.
7. Brand Building and Authority: Establishing Credibility
Through content marketing, social media engagement, and online PR efforts, digital marketing plays a pivotal role in building brand authority and credibility. By consistently delivering valuable and relevant content to their audience, businesses can position themselves as authoritative voices in their respective industries. This, in turn, fosters trust and credibility among consumers, ultimately strengthening the brand's reputation and positioning it as a leader in the market.
8. Accessibility: Leveling the Playing Field
Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of digital marketing is its accessibility to businesses of all sizes. Unlike traditional methods that often favor large corporations with hefty budgets, digital marketing levels the playing field, enabling even small businesses to compete on a global scale. Moreover, digital channels offer unparalleled accessibility, allowing businesses to be available to their customers 24/7, enhancing convenience and satisfaction.
In conclusion, the advantages of digital marketing over traditional methods are undeniable. From its cost-effectiveness and precise targeting capabilities to its real-time analytics and global reach, digital marketing empowers businesses to connect with their audience in a meaningful way. By embracing the power of digital marketing, businesses can unlock endless opportunities for growth, innovation, and success in today's digital age.

Importance of Digital Marketing for Small and Large Businesses
1. Cost-Effective
Once upon a time marketing been considered as luxury, because of its conventional nature. The cost for one billboard or distributing samples was high, commodity, not every business could go. Nonetheless, digital mediums have enabled all types of businesses with varied budgets or indeed not budgets, to request their brand on one steady platform.
Digital marketing sweats bear slightly any original investment. This is great for small businesses. Utmost digital marketing tools offer introductory features free of cost. It's over to the businesses to make the swish use of them.
2. High Reach
A simple rule of branding- go wherever your cult is. While understanding the significance of digital marketing, know that maturity of your cult is online. Hence, marketing online will increase your reach.
With digital marketing, the reach is global. Hence, you can take orders for your product or service from each over the world and it need not be limited to one area. And when you go global, you can still niche your cult to named individualities. Thus, it’s a win- win.
3. Brand awareness
Putting your brand out there on quest machines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, etc and social media platforms analogous as Instagram, Twitter, Quora, Facebook, etc will earn you an online character that the entire world can see.
Digital marketing helps you produce awareness of your brand and its USP( Unique Selling Proposition). If a customer has no awareness of your brand also he can't make a conversion. To attack this, brand visibility is extremely important. With pay- per- click and other kinds of paid elevations, you can really attract guests to your small business. We recommend this Facebook and Instagram Advertisements online course to understand some farther.
4. Erecting a customer Base
Another reason is that you can't keep a record for every person that walks in your shop or every customer who might not like your product. CRM and remarketing ways help make customer bases.
The challenge with small businesses is that one needs to make a customer base. This is predicated on erecting a fellowship with a strong customer relationship. With CRM tools analogous as Hub Spot and Oracle, you can manage this easily.
They need to retain being businesses and concentrate on brand character, client retention, and the growth of the business.

An established company’s image is everything. The right marketing strategies can have a profound impact on your company's brand image. Through digital marketing, effective campaigns can be designed and the compass of fixing any glitches directly is there.
Brand image is crucial for every brand and with digital marketing, you will know about both positive and negative reviews.
6. Measurable Results
With digital marketing, companies can have real time analytics regarding results, growth etc. With this, they can anatomize the effectiveness of the campaign and accordingly formulate strategies. Moment, the significance of assaying data is truly important to estimate the effectiveness and success of your campaigns.
The significance of digital marketing is majorly related to the fact that results and criteria are measurable.
7. Increase in ROI
With digital marketing, returns can be suddenly high if your campaigns are on the right track. Companies can increase their profit with digital media by investing in announcements and thus, adding metamorphoses.
The investment in digital media is important lower than in traditional media and the returns are also advanced. Did you know? You can run announcements on certain digital platforms for as low as 1$.
8. Retaining pious guests
The main thing of digital marketing for big businesses piecemeal from adding their business is icing that their customer base is pious and satisfied.
These are reasons enough to indicate that the significance of digital marketing for businesses is vital and thus, you must consider espousing it for your business. A smart and affect- predicated option would be to go for digital marketing marketable training.

Hi!! I was wondering: how long have you been a professional?
While I have artistic skills, I am JUST BARELY entering the paid-professional world and I find it very daunting. I aspire to charge the prices you charge, but I'm worried about jumping in too deep when I don't even have a following yet, haha!
When you were starting out, what kind of prices did you charge? Are you glad you picked that level? Were people receptive to it? How long did it take for you to get where you are?
I'm sorry if you've answered these questions somewhere, but I could not find these answers ;w;
Also, feel free to ignore this - no hard feelings! I'm just impressed with you, and I'd like to get where you are some day (:
Hello! Don't worry this isn't a bother at all and I'm always happy to answer any questions people have! Of course art is subjective and what works for some people might not work for others so keep that in mind! This is general advice from my own life/journey and can/should be adjusted to fit you and your specific skill/level/life.
Now with that out of the way, I've been doing art commissions on/off since I was about 15/16ish. I've always had side jobs to stay afloat until about 2+ years ago. In 2020 I went fulltime with art and started considering myself professional. However, the second you take a commission it becomes a job, you got paid for a service and you're entering the professional world vs the hobby world. You have to take it seriously and understand that being your own boss comes with many benefits as well as hazards. Being diligent and disciplined while also maintaining your work/life balance with your physical and mental health in mind is harder than it looks. However, it CAN be done, don't let it deter you just be mindful.
I 100% encourage everyone/anyone to give it a try if that is your dream. It is very daunting and I implore you to take your time with it. Building an audience is really important, but so is loving your craft. Creating art YOU want to see in the world, depending on what kind of art you do there are a lot of options available.
When I first started out, like many artists I severely undercharged for my work. Three things should be taken into account when you're doing commissions -- 1. how long does it take you? Hourly rate. Make sure you're making at least minimum wage. 2. Skill level. Now this is subjective, but if you hone a craft you should charge more for it. Art is something you can always keep striving for improvement on. As your skills grow, so should your price. If you get more diverse with your species, styles, backgrounds and so on. All of that has to play a part in pricing yourself. 3. Market. The market fluxes, what is your audience? What is your market? I believe marketing is more than half of the battle of being an artist. Art is subjective, everyone has an audience somewhere. However, finding that audience and marketing to them effectively can be a challenge. Each website has analytics that help with engagement -- especially as a starting artist. Each website has a best time to post, what content does best, how responsive people are and so on. These are things you can research but it will also involve just a lot of trial & error.
People were not always receptive to my work, I've failed 100+ times and I will fail 100+ more. Art and being a creative in general is a lot about failure and refusing to give up. If something doesn't work out, you have to adjust and try again. It's the blunt reality that I know a lot of us don't talk about, nobody likes to fail but when you create something new and original that's just par for the course. So don't be afraid of failure, it'll happen and it's okay. Just try again, there is no perfect time to put yourself out there. Remember set manageable goals and standards, take care of your body (seriously stretch and take breaks. Don't draw on pure white. Like take care of yourself you only get one body. Art is taxing labor) and ALWAYS ALWAYS celebrate your small victories.
It took me many years to get where I am at now, but I caught a lucky break after putting in a ton of work. Optimizing my posting time and staying extreme consistent was a huge part of my success. Marketing skills are your BEST FRIEND. Art is a lot of skill, luck and marketing. If you keep trying at it and working towards your goal eventually you will get it to work. The key is consistency, patience, and gradual growth.
I believe in you and every other aspiring artist, take that first step. Failure is nothing to fear, it's growth and experience points.

1. The Digital Marketing Landscape: Digital marketing isn’t just one thing; it’s a combination of various strategies and channels that businesses use to promote their products or services online. These strategies include:
SEO (Search Engine Optimization): This is about making sure your website shows up when someone searches for stuff on Google. It’s like being on the first page of a big book so people can find you quickly.
Content Marketing: You know when you read cool stuff on the internet, like blogs or watch videos? That’s content marketing. It’s like sharing interesting stories to get people interested in your business.
Social Media: When you see posts or ads on Facebook, Instagram, or other social sites, that’s businesses trying to talk to you. They want to be your online friend.
Emails: Sometimes, you get emails from companies about their products or offers. It’s like getting a letter from a friend, but it’s a business.
Paid Ads: You might see ads when you’re watching videos or reading articles online. These businesses pay to be seen by you.
Affiliate Marketing: Ever see someone recommend a product and share a link? If you buy through that link, they get a reward. It’s like saying, “Hey, this is cool, you should check it out.”

While digital marketing offers tremendous opportunities, it comes with its share of challenges:
Fierce Competition: Many businesses are vying for the same audience’s attention, making it crucial to stand out and be creative.
Ever-Changing Algorithms: Major online platforms frequently update their algorithms, impacting how your content gets seen. Staying adaptable is essential.
Data Privacy Concerns: People are increasingly concerned about their online privacy. It’s vital to comply with data protection regulations and build trust.
Content Overload: There’s an abundance of content online, so creating high-quality, valuable content is essential to cut through the noise.
ROI Measurement: Measuring the success of digital marketing efforts can be tricky and might take some time to see significant results.
Technological Expertise: Keeping up with emerging technologies, automation, artificial intelligence, and analytics is vital for staying competitive.
User Experience (UX): A poor website or mobile app design can drive visitors away, emphasizing the importance of a good user experience.
Multichannel Approach: Coordinating and maintaining consistent messaging across multiple platforms can be challenging.
Patience and Persistence: Success in digital marketing usually doesn’t happen overnight; it requires ongoing effort, learning, and adapting.
Authenticity Matters: Building trust with customers through genuine and transparent interactions is crucial.
3. The Good Side:
But, there’s lots of good stuff about digital marketing:
Global Reach: Even small businesses can talk to people all over the world. It’s like having pen pals from everywhere.
Targeted Ads: Imagine you’re selling soccer shoes. You can show ads to people who love soccer. It’s like telling the right people about your stuff.
Track Results: You can know if your ads are working. It’s like checking how well your garden is growing.
Affordable: It’s cheaper than putting big ads on TV or in newspapers. Even small businesses can play the game.
Creativity Rules: You can do fun stuff online. It’s like painting a cool picture, but on the internet.
Talk in Real Time: You can chat with businesses anytime. It’s like having a friend who answers your texts right away.
Grow with Your Business: Imagine you start selling cookies at school, and then your cookies become famous. You can sell them to more people. It’s like levelling up in a video game.
In summary, digital marketing is a dynamic and ever-evolving field filled with both opportunities and challenges. Understanding these realities is crucial for success in this digital age.
