@revretch and I finally watched M3GAN and loved it, it’s really more sci-fi thriller than horror. M3GAN herself is such an amazing performance, you really can’t tell when she’s animatronic vs. when she’s the real human performer Amie Donald except when you know her movements are way beyond the FX budget. (Minor spoilers)
It’s obvious at the end that news of a killer android doll has almost surely broken containment, so I wonder what the sequel is going to be like. Realistically if this happened then the U.S. Military would be breaking down her creator’s door with truckloads of money but I find military plots kind of almost always insufferable unless they’re just a background evil presence.
The little hint near the end that her consciousness now exists in the cloud however kicks ass because she’s now basically a technological ghost and there’s a shitload they could do with that. I’m sure they’ll be bringing back her “human child doll” design since it’s already iconic to the character but I hope they do some fun stuff with the fact that she just controls technology now. That anyone’s Alexa can be M3GAN whenever she wants. If you’re on the fence about watching it because some horror stuff gets to you, it’s not SUPER gory, however the deaths that do happen are intense. (Bigger spoilers for content warning purposes)
--
Both M3GAN (it feels wrong to write her name lowercase) and her real child “owner” get mauled by a dog that M3GAN kills off-screen. She later rips the ear off a bully and chases him until he’s accidentally hit by a truck. She later murders an old woman in a terrible way with a quick glimpse of the flesh starting to peel off her cheek before it cuts away. M3GAN herself looks like a human child and gets thoroughly mangled by the end. Other deaths are just stabbings with blood spray and no more graphic than that.

A surge of anti-Jewish vitriol, spread by a world-famous rapper, an NBA star and other prominent people, is stoking fears that public figures are normalizing hate and ramping up the risk of violence in a country already experiencing a sharp increase in antisemitism.
Leaders of the Jewish community in the U.S. and extremism experts have been alarmed to see celebrities with massive followings spew antisemitic tropes in a way that has been taboo for decades. Some said it harkens back to a darker time in America when powerful people routinely spread conspiracy theories about Jews with impunity.
Former President Donald Trump hosted a Holocaust-denying white supremacist at Mar-a-Lago. The rapper Ye expressed love for Adolf Hitler in an interview. Basketball star Kyrie Irving appeared to promote an antisemitic film on social media. Neo-Nazi trolls are clamoring to return to Twitter as new CEO Elon Musk grants “amnesty” to suspended accounts.
“These are not fringe outliers sending emails from their parents garage or idiots no one has ever heard of. When influential mainstream cultural, political and even sports icons normalize hate speech, everyone needs to be very concerned,” said Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, a leader in South Florida’s Jewish community.
Northwestern University history professor Peter Hayes, who specializes in Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, said normalizing antisemitism is a “real possibility” when there is a “public discussion of things that used to be beneath contempt.”
“I’m very concerned about it,” Hayes said. “It’s one of the many ways in which America has to get a grip and stop toying with concepts and ideas that are potentially murderous.”
Trump hosted Ye — the rapper formerly known as Kanye West — and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes for dinner at his Florida home on Nov. 22.
Fuentes was a Boston University student when he attended a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that erupted in violence in 2017. He became an internet personality who used his platform to spread white supremacist and antisemitic views. Fuentes leads a far-right extremist movement called “America First,” with supporters known as “Groypers.”
On Thursday, Fuentes joined Ye in appearing on the Infowars show hosted by conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Ye praised Hitler during the interview, ratcheting up the rhetoric that already cost him a lucrative business deal with Adidas.
Jonathan Greenblatt, national director and CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, said it is astonishing and alarming that two of the nation’s leading purveyors of antisemitism were “breaking bread with the erstwhile head of the GOP.”
“I would characterize this as the normalization of antisemitism. It has now become part of the political process in a way we hadn’t seen before,” Greenblatt said. “And that is not unique to Republicans. It is not just a Republican problem. It is a societal problem.”
Most Americans knew it was “beyond the pale” when torch-toting white supremacists marched through the University of Virginia’s campus on the eve of the 2017 rally, said Amy Spitalnick, executive director of Integrity First for America, a group that backed a lawsuit against organizers of the Charlottesville rally.
“What’s even more dangerous than Nazis with torches chanting, ‘Jews will not replace us,’ is when we have political leaders and others espousing those same conspiracy theories in increasingly normalized ways,” she said.
Spitalnick said the virulent hatred that Ye has been spewing can make diluted expressions of antisemitism seem more normal in contrast.
“It’s crucial that we hold Kanye and Irving and these other public figures accountable for their antisemitism. But it means nothing if we’re not also recognizing and holding accountable the ways in which this antisemitism and extremism has seeped into the mainstream of one of our major political parties and become commonplace in our political discourse,” she said.
Trump’s critics and even some of his allies condemned the former president for hosting Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago. Trump claimed that he knew nothing about Fuentes before the dinner and defended his decision to host Ye at his club.
Twitter suspended Ye’s account this week after he tweeted a picture of a swastika merged with the Star of David. Musk tweeted that Ye had violated a rule against inciting violence.
Musk announced last week that his “amnesty” plan applied to accounts that haven’t “broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.” Online safety experts predict that the move will lead to a rise in harassment and hate speech.
Groups that monitor Twitter for racist and antisemitic content say toxic speech already has been on the rise in the month since Musk took over the platform and fired thousands of employees. Content moderators were among those who lost their jobs.
Watchdogs also have rebuked Musk for some of his own tweets, including posting a meme featuring Pepe the Frog, a cartoon character that was hijacked by far-right extremists.
In April, the Anti-Defamation League announced that its annual tally of antisemitic incidents reached a record high last year. The organization counted 2,717 incidents of assault, harassment and vandalism in 2021, a 34% increase over the previous year and the highest number since the ADL began tracking the events in 1979.
Generations ago, famous Americans including Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh unapologetically expressed antisemitic sentiments in a way that would have shocked Americans in more recent decades. Now, the internet and social media make it easy for world-famous celebrities to normalize anti-Jewish hate.
For somebody of Ye’s status to praise Nazis and Hitler is “escalating from ugliness to a kind of incitement,” Greenblatt said. He noted that Jewish institutions already have to beef up security to protect against attacks such as the one in which a gunman killed 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018.
“Our community still has to brace for the consequences of those ideas going mainstream,” Greenblatt said.

M3GAN and the History of January Horror
January, for the longest time, has seemingly become a month for film devoted to three things: films seeking awards attention, films still playing from the holidays, and horror movies.
As long as I can remember, January has been a dumping ground for less-than-stellar horror flicks that studios unfortunately leave to die in cinemas. The vast majority of them being disliked by critics and audiences alike. Despite this, they often end up still making enough to break even due to their low price tags and advertising costs.
However, when the trailer for “M3GAN” first dropped a few months ago and people saw that January release date, the sense of worry surrounding January released horror was immediately overshadowed by incredibly high levels of hype. From a M3GAN Twitter account to gifs of the android doing kicks and flips to even a surprise remixed Taylor Swift deep cut, the film already had audience members in love and optimistic for the film.
Now, it seems our new murderous android bestie is officially dancing her way past the January horror curse after being released in theaters with stellar reception. With a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, and close to $3 million in revenue from previews. “M3GAN” is projected to gross up to $20 million in its opening weekend alone, exceeding its $12 million budget breaking even in its first weekend alone.
If it opens higher than expected, it could even challenge “Avatar: The Way of Water” for the number one spot. However, my new favorite killer robot will face other horror competition almost every weekend of this month, so it will be very interesting to see how, and if, she is able to fend off the competition.
As for the film itself, “M3GAN” is as much fun as it looks to be. It was much funnier than expected, and even moments that were scary couldn’t helped but to be laughed with. Allison Williams once again shows that she is phenomenal in horror performances, and child actor Violet McGraw holds her own incredibly well in every scene, seemingly knowing how to perfectly balance the sadness and humor her character possesses.
The standout, of course, is the titular android, played with perfect terror and comedy by Amie Donald and voiced to terrifying comedic brilliance by Jenna Davis. M3GAN is going to become an iconic horror staple incredibly quickly because of their joint work to create such a scary and hilarious antagonist.
The film also beautifully comments on grief and the ways we act and things we do in those moments to help or hide our emotions. Williams and McGraw are the emotional core of the film, and both are able to perfectly keep that in tact while all of the murderous and hilarious shenanigans go on around them.
This is one movie worthy of the theater experience. My entire theater was perfectly in tune with the film. The film ended in applause, something I hadn’t seen at an AMC in a very long time. It’s clear people love M3GAN, and I really hope M3GAN loves us back.

M3GAN (MEGAN) Review
"Way above the expected trash January horror movie!"
Tumblr media
Typically in the month of January, Hollywood tends to throw out mediocre movies that are expected to review poorly and make a quick buck off the premise alone. With the concept of a killer doll that is very reminiscent of "Child's Play" star, Chucky, "M3GAN" appeared to fit the description of a "January movie". To a lot of people's surprise, M3GAN is getting strong reviews!
M3GAN focuses on a toy inventor named Gemma (Allison Williams), who is struggling to connect with her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) after the death of the young girl's parents. Currently trying to create a revolutionary new product, Gemma builds the A.I. doll M3gan for Cady to play with. As M3gan evolves to her surroundings, she becomes very dangerous and violent for her sole direction to protect Cady.
Tumblr media
What separates M3GAN from any other killer doll or evil child movie is how smart and relatable Gemma and Cady are as flawed humans. Gemma is an awkward guardian thrown into this parental role she's not equipped for and Cady is a confused child not knowing how to process grief and her feelings. The movie knows to take the time to set up these characters before throwing M3gan into the mix.
Tumblr media
Speaking of the titular character, she also doesn't come out as pure evil and violent. Aside from the intentionally creepy and unsettling design by the filmmakers, she starts off as a caring and approachable companion to Cady. There is a natural evolution to the main characters that feels natural and engaging.
When M3gan does start to get destructive, she's unstoppable. M3gan earns her spot as a horror icon from the personality she gives off to the effect itself of bringing her to life. Performed by two actresses, Amie Donald does a great job in her physical performance selling the robotic and still movements and Jenna Davis is wickedly charming as the voice. Together, Donald and Davis create an electrifying and entertaining character that's chilling even when M3gan is just talking.
Tumblr media
While the main characters stand out greatly and boost the movie, everything else is standard. The rest of the characters don't leave any impression. They are underdeveloped and just there to fit a role to push the story along. Also, the viral scene of M3gan dancing in the hallway is rather unnecessary and pointless. The clip does a great job selling the film, but it should have been cut out in the actual movie. Finally, the finale goes full throttle on delivering an epic crowd-pleasing climax while neglecting a proper epilogue and a major plot hole.
Even with its shortcomings, M3GAN is way better than it has any right to be. The writing is strong, the characters are interesting, and M3gan is fun to follow. While it does have its shortcoming, the film still delivers where it needs to and leaves audiences with possibly a new horror icon.
7.5/10

Best of 2023 Movies #14: M3GAN
January usually is a dead zone when it comes to anything that isn’t either the expansion of a movie going for best picture, a family film released during the holiday season that some hadn’t seen yet, or in the case of today’s entry the annual horror movie.
Though here we get a presence wrapped up in a famous dance.
Tumblr media
M3GAN involves a robotics toy designer taking in her niece while working on a new fully ai companion for kids. When she doesn’t make the connection with her she decides to utilize her creation dubbed M3GAN as a test.
Only the doll seeks more than a companion role.
Unexpectedly enjoyable with great turns by Allison Williams and Ronny Chieng highlight how much ai had an influence this year.
If only ChatGPT could do a cross between the Wednesday and M3GAN dance.
Tumblr media
SUM 22: The Model 3 Generative Android may be uncanny valley, but Amie Donald and Jenna Davis wonderfully create a new icon in horror.

M3egan
Tumblr media
Which of us hasn’t dreamed of a special friend who could minster to our emotional needs and take out anyone or anything threatening our wellbeing? That’s the special appeal of Gerard Johnstone’s M3GAN (2022, On Demand). Robotics whiz Allison Williams is working on a new toy for her manic boss (Ronny Chieng, who’s very funny) when she becomes guardian to her orphaned niece (Violet McGraw). She has no idea how to cope with the grieving child until she decides to combine her challenges by testing her new robot, M3gan, on the child. M3gan is an algorithm from hell. It’s designed to learn behavioral cues from its primary user while also scanning the internet to learn whatever else it needs. But as it develops a will of its own, it decides the best way to help McGraw is to kill anything it perceives as a threat — a vicious dog here, a school bully there and eventually anybody it feels like. Screenwriter Akela Cooper (working from a story she developed with James Wan, who for once doesn’t screw up the writing) has the wisdom to treat the film as vaguely absurd. It takes a lot of logical jumps to get from today’s A.I. to M3gan, but she makes the whole thing fun and makes the victims an unsympathetic lot, so you can enjoy watching them get it. M3GAN is consistently entertaining, even if it’s a rather facile comment on our growing dependence on technology. Williams may not be totally believable as a scientific genius, but she’s very believable as a young woman thrust into parenthood before she’s ready for it. She has an open, wide-eyed face that registers confusion well, and she plays out a nice arc in her relationship to McGraw. M3gan herself is a little wonder, a combination of animatronics, CGI, good physical work by child actress Amie Donald and an effective voiceover. With the theme of found family and lines that parody film villains and self-help slogans (“I have a new primary user now: me.”), M3gan has become a gay icon. I mean, what self-respecting gay man wouldn’t want to hang out with someone who can meet his emotional needs, teach him the newest dance steps and dispose of phobes and attitude queens?
