Since Hollywood is on strike (take down the greedy studio bastards!) and I saw a post calling people to check out non-American media - let's start a rec list!
as far as I know these are on Netflix (I don't have any other streaming subscriptions at the moment so I can't rec anything from the others) and might be available online *elsewhere* with a little internet magic.
La casa de papel (also known as Money Heist) A group of criminals are robbing the Spanish Mint - chaos ensues. I think everyone and their grandmother has seen this by now but still. I loved this show - I stayed up until stupid o'clock because i HAD to know what was going to happen next and how they were going to get out of the shit they'd gotten themselves into. 5 seasons. La casa de las flores (also known as House of flowers) Think telenovelas/soap operas. It's unhinged, it's funny, it's a little queer (mlm and wlw). Long lost children, affairs, Big Family Secrets, drag queens - what more could you ask for?? 3 seasons, a special episode (la case de las flores el funeral), and a film (la casa de las flores la pelicula)
Anne+ (film + 1 of 2 seasons tv show - it originated as a webseries so the episodes are pretty short but Netflix deleted the second season) The life and loves of Anne - a queer millennial living in Amsterdam.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Queer (wlw) Bollywood film. A friend recced it to me once. I had never watched a Bollywood film in my life, didn't know anything about the genre, but still enjoyed it. It's a drama. Don't go into this thinking it's the Hindi version of the L word though or you will be disappointed.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Another queer (mlm) bollywood film my friend recced me. It's a little more "blatant" than the one I mentioned before (this one is from 2020, the other 2019) and it's more of a comedy This one is not on Netlfix - it used to be on Amazon prime but I don't know if it still is. I found it *elsewhere* though with better subtitles than on amazon.
Kalifat This is a Swedish show about a young girl getting pulled into the world of extremist Islam, a young mother who already is in the kalifat (and wants to leave) and a (female) journalist trying to help her. It's intense but really good - and kind of scary how easy it is fall down an extremist internet rabbit hole.
Meskina Dutch romantic comedy about a Dutch/Moroccan woman in her 30s who is still single and her family play matchmaker. Featuring one of the funniest women in the Netherlands (Soundos el Ahmadi - who is also a stand up comedian and her shows are on netflix too)
Isi & Ossi German romantic comedy film about a rich girl who wants to go to culinary school but her father won't let her, so she pretends to be in a relationship with a poor guy who is also a boxer to piss off her parents.
Family business Completely unhinged French comedy series about a guy who turns his family's butchershop into a shop that sells weed - because he heard weed was about to be legalised in France. Really funny - 3 seasons.
Lupin French crime/heist show - but from the POV of the thief. Based on/inspired by the Arsène Lupin books. With Omar Sy. IT'S SO GOOD! 2 seasons, season 3 coming in October.
Dirty Lines Dutch (kind of) comedy about a woman who takes a job at a sex phone line.
reblog and add your own!

In ‘The Crown,’ Claire Foy plays a young Queen Elizabeth II. ROBERT VIGLASKY/ASSOCIATED PRESS
‘The Crown’ Jumps Into Netflix’s Top 10 for Weekly Global Viewership
By Alyssa Lukpat, The Wall Street Journal Sept 14, 2022
“The Crown,” the award-winning Netflix series based on the queen’s life, was one of the most-watched series on the streaming service in recent days as interest has surged for content about the royal family.
The first season of the series was Netflix’s seventh most-watched English-language show worldwide since Thursday, the day Queen Elizabeth II died, according to the streaming service.
“The Crown,” which released its fourth and latest season nearly two years ago, was on Netflix’s top 10 most-watched list alongside mostly new content, including the latest season of “Cobra Kai.”
“The Crown” dramatizes the life of the royal family through Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The first season begins with Princess Elizabeth’s 1947 marriage to Prince Philip and follows her early years as the queen alongside Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The most recent season focused on the 1980s, covering the queen’s clashes with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Prince Charles’s ill-fated marriage to Lady Diana Spencer.
The first season, which premiered in 2016, was one of the most-watched shows in 26 countries in the past week, including the U.K., Ireland, Bolivia and Mexico, according to Netflix. It wasn’t among the top 10 most-watched shows in the U.S., however. Subscribers around the world watched the season for 17.57 million hours from Sept. 8 through Sept. 14, Netflix’s website said Wednesday morning.
The fifth season of the hit show, which has already been filmed, is set to be released in November. The show temporarily suspended production of its sixth season on Friday because of the queen’s death. Netflix said last week that it would pause production again as a mark of respect on the day of the queen’s funeral, scheduled for Sept. 19.
Netflix didn’t immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.
Books about the queen and the royal family have been climbing up Amazon.com Inc.’s book charts in recent days as well. Six of the top 10 bestselling books about European history were about the royal family, according to Amazon.
*Olivia Colman plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown Season 3 and 4.

**Imelda Staunton will take over the role in Season 5 and 6.

Britain’s summer has been baking and listless in the main, weeks of bright, wan sunshine, unbroken by rain or any particular hope. In July, southern England received a thimble’s worth of rain—a shade over a centimetre—the least since records began, in 1836. On August 12th, a drought was declared in eight regions, and people were banned from washing their cars. There has been a monotony to the heat, an uncanny continuance, which has seemed to connect to a deeper apathy toward the country’s frightening immediate future. Britain’s economy is failing. The Bank of England has predicted that inflation will reach thirteen per cent in October, its highest level since the early eighties. A recession may be coming. People’s heating and electricity bills are rising at a speed that no one can quite believe. The nights are hot; the children can’t sleep.
Boris Johnson, in character to the last, is spending his final weeks as Prime Minister in decompression mode: throwing a wedding party, vacationing in Slovenia and Greece. The mass resignations that led to his downfall in July mean that there is barely a functioning government, let alone a plan to address the crisis, or any authority to deliver it. Instead, there is a prolonged Conservative Party leadership contest, in which around a hundred and fifty thousand Party members, or 0.32 per cent of the British electorate, are currently choosing the next Prime Minister. The winner will be declared on September 5th, at which point, you would assume, someone will have to start running the place again.
In the meantime, parts of the United Kingdom are breaking down. Since June, the London Underground and the national rail network have been disrupted by rolling strikes led by the National Union of Rail, Maritime, and Transport Workers. The R.M.T. has rejected pay offers that fall short of inflation. They are not the only ones. The gap between wage growth and price rises is at its widest since comparable records began, just over twenty years ago. Last week, around eight hundred workers staged a sit-in at the canteen of an Amazon warehouse in Essex, to protest against a thirty-five-pence-per-hour (or three-per-cent) pay rise. The G.M.B. union said that protests spread to at least five other sites, with some employees working slow, picking one parcel an hour. The cost-of-living crisis, as it is known, has spread everywhere, and its principal symptom is the same: people cannot cope. Milk prices have gone up by twenty per cent since last year, gas by forty per cent. A recent survey of food banks found that almost eighty per cent were running low on food themselves. “To give out packs of breadcrumbs and a tin of chickpeas is heartbreaking,” William McGranaghan, the manager of Dads House, a charity in West London, told the Independent earlier this week. “We’re struggling—we just can’t keep up with the numbers.”
Later this month, there are strikes scheduled by funeral services, refuse workers, the Royal Mail, examination-board staff, and dockers. Members of the Royal College of Nursing, which was founded in 1916, are voting on whether nurses in England, Scotland, and Wales should withdraw their labor for the first time in the union’s history. The National Health Service, which was recently awarded the George Cross, the highest civilian award for bravery, by the Queen, for its efforts during the pandemic, is already overwhelmed. More than six and a half million people (that’s the equivalent of around fifty Conservative Parties) are currently on waiting lists for hospital treatment, an increase of fifty per cent on pre-pandemic levels. No one knows what will happen if the nurses walk out.
Around half of the inflationary pressure in the U.K. comes from rising energy prices, which are largely a consequence of the war in Ukraine. Since 2019, there has been a price cap, which is now updated every three months by the country’s energy regulator, to protect consumers from blatant profiteering. But the cap only moves one way. Last winter, it was set at £1,277 per year, for an average household. Earlier this month, analysts projected that the cap could almost quadruple—to £4,266—by the spring of 2023. According to the I.M.F., the poorest twenty per cent of British households will soon pay a higher proportion of their income on energy (around fifteen per cent) than any other population in Europe, except Estonia’s. “This is a national crisis, on the scale that we saw in the pandemic,” Martin Lewis, a financial journalist and consumer advocate, told the BBC last week. “We are currently in that position where we are watching the beds in European hospitals and doing nothing about it.” Around a quarter of families already owe more than two hundred pounds to their electricity providers, according to Uswitch, a price-comparison Web site, and that is before the next price rise has come into effect. Gordon Brown, a former Labour Prime Minister, who was in office during the financial crisis, has called for the government to take control of the energy market. Keir Starmer, the current Labour leader, has proposed that prices stay where they are for at least six months, with the government paying the difference—an intervention that would cost around twenty-nine billion pounds.
But the person who is almost certain to be Britain’s next Prime Minister has made it clear that she will do neither of those things. Polls put Liz Truss, the country’s Foreign Secretary, twenty-two points clear of Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, whose resignation helped start the cascade that buried Johnson. Truss, who is forty-seven, has been a Cabinet minister for eight years, during which she has stayed on message—whatever the message—every day. She campaigned against Brexit before fervently coming round to the idea. As Foreign Secretary, Truss has borrowed style choices from Margaret Thatcher, arranging to have herself photographed riding a tank, and projected a vaguely confrontational energy to the world. Truss likes freeports, low taxes, and the way Chinese schools teach math. (Her father was a math professor). In 2012, she was a co-author of “Britannia Unchained,” which argued that British workers “are among the worst idlers in the world” and the country was held back by a bloated state and excessive regulation. Truss believes in what she calls “Conservative economics.”
In the contest to succeed Johnson, Truss has positioned herself as the change candidate. “The last twenty years of economic policy haven’t delivered growth,” she says, which is a bold contention given that her party has been in charge for twelve of them. Truss’s ideas to address the country’s worrying inflation rate and unaffordable energy bills include tax cuts, fracking, and the suspension of a climate-change levy—a package that would be worth just over a hundred and fifty pounds to most families and probably make inflation worse. She opposes “handouts.” Rather than speak about the single thing on every voter’s mind, Truss prefers to display her no-nonsense credentials by supporting Britain’s immoral plan to deport refugees to sub-Saharan Africa and trying out some culture-war material. “As a straight-talking Yorkshirewoman, I know that a woman is a woman,” Truss told a party hustings in Darlington last week. A few days later, she published a plan to deal with a “woke civil service culture that strays into antisemitism.”
The whole experience must be disorienting for Sunak, who until recently had the largest support among Conservative Members of Parliament and led the government’s economic response to the pandemic. At the end of 2021, Sunak was the most popular politician in the country—with a higher approval rating than either Johnson or Nicola Sturgeon, the leader of the Scottish National Party—and the bookies’ favorite to become the next Prime Minister. His own plan to limit the misery this winter is to make direct payments to poorer families—the extension of a grant program that he began, as Chancellor, in the spring. “If we don’t do that, I can tell you not only will millions of people suffer, we will get absolutely hammered when it comes to an election,” Sunak said last week. “The British people will not forgive us for not doing that.” Sunak used to work for Goldman Sachs. He is almost freakishly spry. He bounces on his toes and seems delighted to be in whichever suburban retail park he is visiting at any given moment. (At the peak of his popularity, as Chancellor, Sunak was all about hoodies and late nights poring over official documents). But he appears to have been fatally punctured as a candidate, among the Conservative Party base, at least, by his perceived disloyalty to Johnson and his own extreme metropolitan tendencies. (Sunak’s father-in-law is Narayana Murthy, an Indian tech billionaire). In recent days, three Conservative M.P.s who previously supported Sunak have publicly defected to Truss, citing the inevitable momentum of her campaign.
Truss’s record suggests that she will switch to the safest political ground, once she enters Downing Street. “I will deliver what people want me to deliver,” she said in Darlington. In a recent Guardian column, Gaby Hinsliff quoted former staffers who have worked with Truss, describing her mathematical, highly flexible approach to political problems. (She likes to test her team’s mental arithmetic in meetings.) “She’s a contrarian. Just because ninety per cent of people tell her, ‘This way is the way,’ she’s not inclined to accept that,” one aide told Hinsliff. So far, Truss has been making her case to the Conservative Party membership, which is older, richer, and more male than the rest of the population. But even the better-off are not immune from the fear of what is to come. A snap poll of Conservative members found that eighty-five per cent supported Labour’s idea of an energy-price freeze for the winter. If she is elected in September, Truss has promised tax cuts on Day One, followed by an emergency budget that will be designed to minimize the impact of a recession. By then, Britain’s summer of discontent, as the newspapers have called it, will be darkening and changing into something else. The anxiety will deepen. The strikes will go on. The numbers don’t lie.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
Tuesday was a cracking day! No lessons, no marking, just lots of free Lindsay time to do all the things I needed to do. Sadly, after an intense few months (and an inconvenient illness), all Lindsay’s body wanted to do is chill. Oh, well. I have learnt to obey my body so, like a Mars bar, Tuesday was work, rest and play. One of the cures for cellulitis, as you would expect, is to keep the leg at 90 degrees, so I don’t feel guilty for putting my foot up and watching a movie. In fact, I’ve been recording a whole set of recuperation movies. Yesterday, it was ‘Miss Congeniality’; what a great movie! Michael Caine steals the show, of course!
I am clearly not respectful enough towards the royal family. I am shedding 'friends' by the day. Personally, I find it very helpful. It's like the rubbish taking itself out! It’s astonishing how many ‘friends’ and even family members have distanced themselves from us over the last few years over a variety of subjects: Brexit, Covid, jabs, boosters, the hostile environment, police brutality, BLM, boat people, American politics, Meghan Markle, the queen’s funeral etc. There has been so much to talk about, so much to argue about, so much to fall out over! I don’t agree with my friends 100% of the time but that’s cool. That’s why they’re friends because we can disagree about stuff and the love is still there. That’s a mark of real friendship. Nothing affects real friendship. As I mentioned before, on Thursday, we’re having dinner with a girl I’ve known since the late seventies! Real friendships last.
Did anyone see chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng at the Queen's funeral? Erm … what was he laughing about? I have a strong suspicion he was under the influence of something! Erm … very inappropriate behaviour, mate!
Okay, I’ve been hinting at it for a long time but I think I can finally reveal, that other project I’ve been working on is a TV station. Of course, TV has radically changed since I started at MTV in 1999. Now, I can talk to my remote and get Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, BT Sport and, truly, some of the weirdest TV programmes I have ever seen! (Of course, nothing is as weird as ‘Naked Attraction’ but that is a very special show!) These days, I end-up watching a lot of television on You Tube. Of course, it’s not really TV. It looks like TV but it’s not really TV. Because I’m a nerd, I get lost in nerdy little You Tube shows. If you want to talk to me for 20 minutes about the greatest rock riffs of all time – yep! – I will quite happily watch that shit. And that’s not to mention the shortest TV programmes in the world; TikTok! Christ, I can get lost in there! I’m even making my own TikTok videos! Anyway, the TV project I’m working on is quite classy (what do you expect, I’m a classy guy!) and as soon as I can give you more details I will.
Finally, today, I’d like to talk about discretion. There are some people on this planet that know secrets about you, or maybe stuff you wouldn’t really want the world to know about? And you are grateful to those people for keeping your secrets, grateful for their discretion. Now, me, I’ve been in the music business for more than 40 years, so I know a lot of stories about a lot of people. People you know! But I am discreet and those secrets stay with me. They will die with me. Do you ever get the feeling that discretion is slowly dying? Because some people have got nothing to talk about, they just gossip; make stuff up, speculate, exaggerate. Not me! Your secrets are safe with me.
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom of my status. Many people don’t like reading. It’s too much hard work. So, I thank you for giving me five minutes of your day.
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

Am I a terrible person that my first thought at seeing the pictures from today was that I’m really glad Ze got another pair of pants?
Okay, this message made me laugh so much.
No, totally not! And true!
But I think, he also wore another kind of cargo pants (is this what they're called in English?) in the past. + the black ones to the funeral.
I'm actually curious what they do with the laundry in Bankova. We know they don't leave the building and live there, so...they have a washing machine? Everyone's doing laundry in the sinks? "I'm going to order the same shirt 20 times. Long live Amazon Prime."?

A Simple Trick For Airline Revealed

Because many passengers refused to deplane, the trade started its plane safety marketing campaign. five interesting Ghanan books
Nkrumah and the Ghana Revolution : Kwame Nkrumah
In this new edition of Nkrumah and the Ghana Revolution, C. L. R. James tells the history of the socialist revolution led by Kwame Nkrumah, the first president and prime minister of Ghana. Although James wrote it in the immediate post-independence period around 1958, he did not publish it until nearly twenty years later, when he added a series of his own letters, speeches, and articles from the 1960s. Although Nkrumah led the revolution, James emphasizes that it was a popular mass movement fundamentally realized by the actions of everyday Ghanaians. Moreover, James shows that Ghana’s independence movement was an exceptional moment in global revolutionary history: it moved revolutionary activity to the African continent and employed new tactics not seen in previous revolutions. Featuring a new introduction by Leslie James, an unpublished draft of C. L. R. James's introduction to the 1977 edition, and correspondence, this definitive edition of Nkrumah and the Ghana Revolution offers a revised understanding of Africa’s shaping of freedom movements and insight into the possibilities for decolonial futures. (good reads) 208 pgs
2. Dark days in Ghana : Kwame Nkrumah
President Kwame Nkrumah exposes the true nature of the military-police dictatorship established in his country after the overthrow of his constitutional government on February 24, 1966, and sets it in the context of the wider African and world situation. He sees the coup as being directed against the fulfilment of his socialist policies in Ghana and thus delay the advance of the African Revolution. He demolishes the 'big lie' that Ghana needed to be rescued from 'economic chaos,' and sets forth his views on the struggle against imperialism and neo-colonialism in Africa. ( good reads ) 219 pgs
3. reflections of an ordinary african woman vol 1 : Akua Djanie-Manfo
The world today has been rocked by so much rot, injustice, unfairness and racism; a system where the rich and powerful are engaged in various corrupt practices to further enrich themselves and enslave the poor. The activities of these people have affected the development of this dear nation of ours. And so the question is, what can we do differently?Reflections Vol. 1 proffers authentic, smart and straightforward ideas that can push us forward as a people and be responsible for the development of our nation. It dwells on issues of national interest, culture, democracy, politics, relationships and so much more. This book uncovers the canker that has eaten deep into the society but at the same time, gives the reader something to think deeply about to transform society and change lifestyles. ( amazon ) 229 pgs
4.
The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices : kofi ayim
The Akan of Ghana: Aspects of Past and Present Practices takes the reader through the ancestry of present-day Akan people - from the influence of ancient Egypt, through the ancient Empires of Western Sudan and into the forest belt of present-day Ghana. Comparative analysis of cultural practices (such as kingship and the royal setup, death, funeral rites, and family structures) between ancient Egypt and present-day Akan people are highlighted. The three elements that make up an Akan person - Blood, Soul, and Spirit - as well as the Akan family structure are elaborately treated, and a clear cultural distinction between an Akan family and clan is explained. Names and their appellations, signs and symbols, as well as some kente designs are highlighted in the appendices. Ultimately, cultural challenges of the Akan in the contemporary world are brought to the fore. ( amazon )

We Are Not Starving: The Struggle for Food Sovereignty in Ghana : joeva sean rock
This critical text is a timely ethnography of how global powers, local resistance, and capital flows are shaping contemporary African foodways. Ghana was one of the first countries targeted by a group of US donors and agribusiness corporations that funded an ambitious plan to develop genetically modified (GM) crops for African farmers. The collective believed that GM crops would help farmers increase their yields and help spark a “new” Green Revolution on the continent. Soon after the project began in Ghana, a nationwide food sovereignty movement emerged in opposition to GM crops. Today, in spite of impressive efforts and investments by proponents, only two GM crops remain in the pipeline. Why, after years of preparation, millions of dollars of funding, and multiple policy reforms, did these megaprojects effectively come to a halt? One of the first ethnographies to take on the question of GM crops in the African context, We Are Not Starving: The Struggle for Food Sovereignty in Ghana blends archival analysis, interviews, and participant observation with Ghanaian scientists, farmers, activists, and officials. Ultimately the text aims to illuminate why GM crops have animated the country and to highlight how their introduction has opened an opportunity to air grievances about the systematic de-valuing and exploitation of African land, labor, and knowledge that have been centuries in the making. please rec some shows! and please put short descriptions if its not too much trouble
it’s not too much trouble, don’t worry! i am pretty doubtful that i could keep this brief, but i’ll give it my best shot. putting my recs under the cut!
↳ sleepover saturday !
the umbrella academy — a dysfunctional family of superheroes reunite for the first time in years for their father’s funeral. did i mention that the world is ending? because it is. platform and genre: netflix + action and science fantasy favorite characters: five and klaus
the good place — a woman wakes up in the afterlife and finds herself in the good place, which is this show’s way of saying heaven. i’m not going to say anything else, but i highly encourage you to watch at least the first episode. i promise that it’s worth it. if at any point you feel like you have an idea where things are going, the next season is going to slam in and prove you wrong. platform and genre: netflix and amazon prime + comedy favorite characters: jason and michael
the boys — not your typical superhero show. the world’s greatest heroes are assholes and they’re just here to perpetuate the capitalist machine. terrible, terrible characters (by that i mean they’re fucked up, not that they’re badly written) and shit constantly goes from bad to worse, but i love it anyway. be warned that this show has a lot of blood, guts, and fucked up themes, but personally i think that’s part of the charm. as you can see, there’s something so wrong with me. platform and genre: prime + action, satire, and dark comedy favorite characters: butcher, frenchie, queen maeve
there’s a lot more that i like, but i’ll leave you with these for now! happy streaming, anon.

Insidious: The Red Door ( Movie #5)
⭐️⭐️.5/5
😱😱/5 - scarefactor
The movie opens up nine years after Carl hypnotised both Dalton and Josh to forget about their astral projecting power and the further all together. A funeral is taking place where dalton is doing the eulogy on a very small family only service. Dalton and his father dont have a great relationship so the mother suggests that Josh take Dalton to college to set up his dorm. As he is setting up his dorm he meets Chris Winslow who becomes an important character in this film, with her charm and also her comedic input. The next day we meet Dalton’s art professor Armagan. She is another important character, as she initiates the climax of the film. Which begins the rollercoaster that is Insidious: The Red door.
Does this movie need to be seen in theatres?
In my personal opinion this movie can easily be enjoyed at home so stream it and watch it with your companion weirdos and save money in the process.
In my personal opinion this movie could of have been done alot better and was definetly not my favorite of the insidious series. It had its moments and some jumpscares but for the most part this movie was not scary to me.
Visuals: amazing cinematography. I also love the way they make the further look throughout all the insidious series and the demons in it.
Director: Patrick Wilson
Cinematographer: Autumn Eakin
Streaming on: Amazon prime/ in theatres
triggers to look out for:
Blood, emetophobia, possession

Discovered that the 1955 movie adaptation of Chesley Bonestell’s book “Conquest of Space” is on Amazon Prime.
It seems more “real” than most other pre-Mir space movies because of how minimalist and claustrophobic the sets are. Acting is very stiff, stageplay-like. It’s a weird contrast.
Tumblr media
Miniature effects haven’t held up as well as those in, say, Forbidden Planet or War of the Worlds, but then those movies were a lot less ambitious.
Tumblr media
(cinematic parallels)
Tumblr media
I wanna try those food pills ngl
Tumblr media
Weird that the Japanese astronaut has the “Rising Sun” flag on his locker. Maybe that variant was perceived as more recognizable to Americans in the 50s?
Tumblr media
Also, the Swedish guy has a flag with a jagged edge like a pennant, so there’s a lot of vexillogocal weirdness.
Tumblr media
Wait, I thought I was mishearing, was the Japanese guy really named Dr. Imouto?
lmao, the big spaceship still has a sparkler for its exhaust like in the 1940s Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon serials.
Tumblr media
Ooh they’re getting topical, talking about the Bible.
“Is it right for us to go into space when we’ve been given the Earth?” Vs. “The universe was put here for Man to conquer.” Which of those is the conservative and which is the liberal position have completely inverted since this movie came out.
I’ve heard that the plot about a religious fanatic trying to sabotage the mission already felt dated in 1955. I wonder how much of that was because of a propaganda campaign to get Americans on board with the Space Race, “It’s not blasphemy if it’s to beat those godless commies!”
Dang, nobody had any idea what an asteroid looked like up close back then.
Tumblr media
The space funeral is still pretty haunting. It would be darn creepy to look out the window and see your friend’s corpse just hanging there like a ghost.
They got how Mars looks almost right. Kudos on that. Guess it was a lot easier to see with telescopes of the time.
Tumblr media
They portray Mars as having a blue sky and it being safe to take the gloves of your spacesuit off. Before Mariner showed how thin Mars’s atmosphere is, before Viking showed how toxic the dirt is.
Tumblr media
Why’d they even bring a gun on this trip? Is there not enough explosive stuff on a spaceship already?
Tumblr media
Like, yeah, some real astronauts carried guns, but that was as likely to be a hunting rifle or shotgun for foraging if they went off course than a pistol. I'd assume the mission to Mars would be a bit better observed to avoid landing in Soviet Siberia or something. I guess it still makes more sense than, say, the Soyuz crew in Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter's "Time Odyssey" having a gun. Like, I wouldn't think you need to worry about accidentally landing in hostile territory as much when you've got both American and Russian astronauts aboard.
Aww, they got a white Christmas on Mars. :3 Unclear why the rocket needs to be perfectly vertical for them to take off. Doesn't seem like a “The Martian” situation where they’re afraid of tipping over. Listen, I’ve played Kerbal Space Program, you can just adjust your flight angle after blastoff! Is the mission so perfectly calibrated that they don’t have the ability to steer at all?
