Penelope's Little Heraldry - #4 German federal states if they were awesome
If I had a penny for every time that I've drawn arms with a bathing lion on them this week, I'd have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

House of Wettin & of Hesse: Princess Christina of Saxony
Christina was born as the eighth of ten children to Duke George “the Bearded” of Saxony and his wife, the Polish princess Barbara Jagiellon. Her siblings were Hereditary Princes Johann and Friedrich of Saxony as well as Electoral Princess Magdalena of Brandenburg.
At the age of 17, Christina was married to Landgrave Philipp I of Hesse. It was a strictly political marriage which nevertheless resulted in 10 children being born. Their daughter were Electress Agnes of Saxony, Countess Palatine Anna of Zweibrücken, Duchess Barbara of Württemberg-Mömpelgard, Electress Palatine Elisabeth and Duchess Christine of Holstein-Gottorp. Their sons each became a Landgrave in their own right since their father decided to split the inheritance to all four sons. This way the branches Darmstadt, Kassel, Rheinfels and Marburg of the House of Hesse were established.
In 1540 Philipp decided to marry his 17-year-old mistress Margarethe von der Saale. Christina consented to her husband’s bigamy due to her view of him as her sovereign and under the condition she remain his main wife and that only her children would inherit the lands and titles of their father. This bigamy was even allowed by no one less than Martin Luther, who commented that bigamy was better than a divorce, as well as Philip Melanchthon. Even though Philipp was now also married to Margarethe, he and Christina would go on to have three more children before their sexual relationship ended.
When Philipp was captured during the Schmalkaldic War, it was Christina alongside her son Wilhelm who took over the governmental duties from 1547-49. Philipp had not named Christina as his regent officially since he feared she would not provide for his children with Margarethe. Margarethe was also not allowed at Wilhelm’s court in Kassel, even after Christina’s death, so his father’s fear was not without reason.
Christina died on April 15th, 1549, She is buried at St. Martin’s Church in Kassel.

Independence Day celebrations

 2021-07-05 Independence Day celebrations
Those of us who are now Meth Gator fans were pleased to see that Pops had booked them for this year’s Independence Day celebrations. Others were pleased that he’d managed to coax Raymo out into the sun. Ray prepared a massive pot of Crawfish boil, which, in addition to the wonderful spread of food by Ally Wright, and two grills worth of ribs, burgers and hotdogs meant that the food on display was far more than we could all eat, especially with the band demanding we dance with their excellent covers.
Stanley was also there with his entire selection of ice creams. I really appreciated being able to grab an ice pop when I got hot from dancing. Dayna and Ramius, a new face she brought with her, also enjoyed Stanley's ice cream. Welcome to Wrightsburgh Ramius and great to see you again Dayna.
There was no stinting on the drinks either, for the Mayor and his team had laid on several coolers with bottled drinks of all varieties. Tubs of beer, coolers of diet and regular cola, a well stocked carry cooler, and a kayak filled with cans.

The trend for events this year seems to be bigger and better than before. Long may that trend continue!  Deputy Agnes was there with Sarah Sloane, and she commented both on this year being bigger and that last year’s bashy was good too, when Deputy Joe DJ’d. Her brother Caiden and Red brought their entire family, as did Eaton and Ally. The kids seemed to enjoy the music as well, although as Damien commented "They was Loud!".
Pops seemed in a good mood at the event. Jenna and Brooke, rarely seen more than a few metres away from him, took to the dance floor in front of the stage, joined by myself, Tina and Lori.
Pops wasn’t the only one working the grills, Albert ‘Ace’ Guidry was working the other one, bantering with his wife Lola. Their grown up twins, Pookie and RayRay, who work at Higher Education, were chilling over with their boss, Eaton ‘The Dude’.

All in all another successful event this year, even if I did dance myself out and have to leave pretty early on. See you at the next one!

@though-im-loved asked me to make a list of the songs i’ve been obsessing over lately, and how could i refuse such a babe?
glass animals – agnes (probably the best song about grief and loneliness ever written. the first time i listened to it it made me cry and it’s done it again many times since. my song of 2017. one of my forever faves)
talking heads - pull up the roots (speaking in tongues is one of my favourite albums ever and this song is just such a great example of the eerie bounciness that runs through that whole record. it’s not a talking heads classic but it should be)
the citradels - too easy to be too hard (it’s a general rule that all surfing movies/documentaries/whatever have great music, and this song is from stab in the dark. if you don’t like surfing or handsome south african men don’t set aside half an hour of your time for this one)
foo fighters - sky is a neighborhood (i know the foos are a bit dad rock now but a) this song is great and b) i’ve harboured a grim crush on dave grohl for years)
the decemberists - the wanting comes in waves (someone used a line from this as a fic title and i went to investigate. it’s incredible)
kishi bashi - brandenburg stomp (it’s the most bonkers, joyous song ever. seriously, go listen to it)
haim - little of your love (it’s three and a half minutes of sunshine, and it’s the best haim song since days are gone)
the kills – dna (i used to think the kills were the coolest band in the world and when i listen to this i regress back to that)
perfume genius – wreath (the reasons why this song affects me so much are too deep to go into here but this spoke to me like no other piece of music, bar agnes, did in 2017. bravo mike)
christine and the queens – chaleur humaine (it’s probably her best song along with jonathan and saint claude. i can only understand 20% of what she is saying but that doesn’t matter because it’s so beautiful)
i’m going to tag @roguewen, @bebeocho, @dying-suffering-french-stalkers, @swawrinka, @alichay & @naughtygoblin. don’t worry if you don’t want to though!

Premyslid Queens of Bohemia: 5/8
Elizabeth Richeza of Poland, Queen of Bohemia and Poland (1 September 1286/8-19 October, 1335)
Her birthname was Richeza (Ryksa in Polish).  Richeza was the only child of Przemysl II, who at first was High Duke, and later King of Poland.  He also held the title Duke of Greater Poland.  Her mother was Przemysl’s second wife, Richeza of Sweden.  Her mother died a few years after her birth, and her father was assassinated in February 1296, leaving Richeza an orphan at 7 or 9 (her birth year is variously given as 1286 or 1288.  She was placed under the care of her stepmother, Margaret of Brandenburg.  (Margaret’s relatives took part in the king’s assassination, and she may or may not played a part in her husband’s death.)  Richeza was betrothed to Margaret’s brother, Otto, making her a future sister in law to her stepmother!  This match, however came to nothing, for Otto died in 1299.
There were multiple contenders for the Polish crown, and now Richeza was a desired match for them.  One of them, King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia, widower of Judith of Habsburg, ended up being betrothed to Richeza.  He was crowned as King of Poland in 1300, and Richeza was sent to live in Prague, Bohemia.
Richeza and Wenceslaus were married on 26 May 1303, when she was 14 or 16.  She was then crowned Queen Consort of Bohemia and Poland, and renamed Elizabeth, because ‘Richeza’ couldn’t be translated in Bohemian.  Two years after the wedding, Elizabeth gave birth to her only child, Agnes, but King Wenceslaus died just six days later on 21 June 1305.
Elizabeth-Richeza married her second husband Rudolf, Duke of Austria and Styria on 16 October 1306.  Two months prior, her stepson, King Wenceslaus III of Bohemia was assassinated, therefor ending the Premyslid dynasty.  On the wedding, Rudolf became the new King of Bohemia, making Elizabeth Queen consort of Bohemia for a second time.
Her second marriage was even shorter-lived than her first.  Rudolf died on 4 July 1307. The crown of Bohemia was vacant again, and Elizabeth supported Frederick of Austria’s (Rudolf’s brother) claim for it against Henry of Carinthia’s (husband of one of her step-daughters).  Ultimately Henry won, but he was deposed in 1310.  John of Luxembourg, a husband of one of her other stepdaughters, became the new king.  Elizabeth was also opposed to him.
Around this time, Elizabeth became involved in a romantic relationship with a knight named Henry of Lipa.  Because the new king was worried about his influence, he had Henry imprisoned, but released him in 1316.  Elizabeth arranged the marriage of her daughter, Agnes, to Duke Henry I of Jower in 1317. A year later, Henry of Lipa (still Elizabeth’s lover) was restored to his offices, and relations between Elizabeth and King John were now peaceful.
Whether Elizabeth and Henry of Lipa ever married or not is debated, some say they married in 1319. Either way, she stayed with him until his death in 1329.  Afterwards, Elizabeth became a nun, devoting her time to religion, including establishing churches and convents.  She died on 19 October, 1335, aged 47 or 49, and was buried in the Cistercian Monastery at Brno, next to Henry of Lipa.
