In the season of the holidays, let's talk about the Clan Culture of Gift-giving!

There are many different kinds of things that Clan cats give each other as gifts. I will show some of the different categories, feel free to ask about anything in them.

Flowers (for all intents and purposes, most flowers are no longer toxic to cats)

Flowers are a very common gift amongst the Clans. Different flowers also have different meanings. Lavender is given as a general "wishing you peace" as the scent has a calming effect. A rose is seen as a VERY bold gift, as they are mainly found in Twoleg gardens, and posses thorns. Stems, petals, and leaves are all seen as gifts themselves, but all parts of a flower have the same culture.

Scorchfur brought Snowbird tulip petals while they were courting. Quite brave and romantic since they come from Twoleg gardens!

Tree brought Needlekit and Rootkit daisies while they were small. Oops, that's a gift younger cats tend to give older cats. Thankfully they liked the smell.

Palebird liked giving heather to Woollytail, which is seen a nice, generic gift in Windclan. In any other Clan, it is pretty much seen as just friendly. Heather flowers were Woollytail's favorite though,

Generally, they are given to from any cat to any cat, but have their own meaning unlike human flower language.

Stones/Shells

Since shells are nearly Riverclan exclusive, I'm gonna throw them into this category.

Stones are seen as adult gifts. You don't give them to kits, they are given to fellow warriors. If a mentor gives one to their apprentice, it is seen as a HIGH compliment. Longtail gave a lovely smooth pebble from the river to Swiftpaw. Cloudtail buried it with him. Rainwhisker gave a jagged little stone to his friend Spiderleg, which he uses to help cut up mushroom pieces, good useful gift!

Shellheart, true to his name, gave shells to Rainflower while they were courting. She threw them all out when they split up. Crookedjaw gave a shiny shell to Willowbreeze when they got together. Silverstream kept it and it is now in Blossomfall's possession, as Blossomfall is Silverstream's daughter now.

Berries/Mushrooms/Nuts

Snacks! Snacks are great gifts! Anyone can give these out to anyone, and some have basic messages. They quite different from straight up meals. They are very often given from parents to children, especially nuts.

Acorns are very common in Thunderclan land, and Squirrelflight liked giving them to The Three for them to eat and play with.

A large beech nut tree grows on Riverclan land, close to their Windclan border. Beechfur would leave small piles of beech nuts for Gorsetail to find and give to their kits.

Mushrooms are more mature, since they have tastes that young kittens may not enjoy. They are most common found in Shadowclan's beautiful marshy land, but grow in other areas too. I'll be doing a post on the different mushrooms that grow in WCR. FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES THE MUSHROOMS USED IN THE STORY ARE NOT TOXIC TO CATS.

Toadstep made fried mushrooms (beefsteak mushroom) for Featherpelt during an Aftergathering while she was pregnant.

Berries are also incredibly popular! Whether for fur dye, food, or bait for hunting, every cat is happy to get gifted berries. They are most popular to give to cats you are either kin with or have mentored/been mentored by.

Puddleshine likes to give sloe berries to Shadowsight, as a bush grows on the Thunder-Shadow border.

Strawberries grow near the Wind-Thunder border, and strawberries are Leafpool's favorite snack, so Squirrelflight does her best to get lots for Leafpool, and got some for the Three.

Snowtail likes to give lots of blackberries to his mother Speckletail, as blackberries are both their favorite.

Feathers

Feathers are a lovely gift! They are often used in nest building or as toys for kits. (Or, if you for some reason make the hike up the mountain to the Tribe Of Snowy Peaks, used in sculptures) (except eagle feathers, which are only for nesting because of their stiffness being perfect for keeping nests together)

Note: You do not give Cuckoo feathers as gifts. Ever. It is seen as incredibly disrespectful. They are NOT gifts.

Icecloud likes to give robin feathers to her mom and dad, she makes sure they have nice nests, and knows that Dustpelt really likes the colour of them.

Ivypool found a large crow feather once and gave it to Blossomfall, who especially appreciated to softness while recovering from having their kits.

Tigerclaw gave Firepaw cuckoo feathers, because he knew Firepaw wouldn't know what they meant.

Clay

Clay pots, bowls and plates are all very good things. Most often given to Medicine Cats or Cooks since they get the most use out of them, they are the most frequent recipients. Each is very unique and has a different vibe.

Briarlight made a small plate for Jayfeather while she was in recovery, using her claws to make lots of different textures.

Bristlefrost made bowls for Rootspring and Shadowsight, they both still have them. They have her pawprint in the middle.

Curlfeather made Frostpaw lots of bowls, each with curly, looping designs on them...

Wood

Woodworking is difficult, but since the discovery of Fire, was revamped with woodburning. Tools and decorations are made, but while decorations are for anyone, tools are not for apprentices (aside from inheritance).

Pieces of wood are cut with sharpened stones and bone tools, then shaped as best as the WCR cats can get them.

Tools are important to the Clans, and inherited and passed down until the tool breaks, to which it must be replaced by the cat who broke it. Tools are a very high-value gift and a huge honor to receive.

Ashfur gave Ferncloud a small decoration, he burned a small pattern into it for the nursery to smell nice. She threw it out after his death.

Breezepelt gave his first litter (Smokehaze, Brindlewing and Needletail) their own tools when they were apprentices, despite the pushback he got.

Food/Meals

Food is always an amazing gift, especially when you know someone's favorite meal. You can always expect a meal gift if you are close with a cat who likes cooking, such as Sparkpelt, Strikestone, Featherpelt, Firefern, and Graymist.

To apologize to Daisy, Spiderleg made her favorite dish: scrambled egg. It was burnt in one part, undercooked in another, and not enough shell was in it, but Daisy told him it was the best meal she had ever had.

Spicy Chub Soup is Hawkfrost's favorite meal, so his daughter Cloudsnap learned to make it for him whenever he looks stressed out.

Squirrelflight makes Fried Squirrel for her family members, often drizzling it with honey as well.

All in all, giving gifts is done all year round, but a lot of gift exchanges happen at Gatherings or Aftergatherings.

Calm Nanowrite: Oakheart moves to ThunderClan AU

If I were straight and a cat, I would marry Oakheart. I love him so much and the only time I nearly cried reading warriors was when Oakheart tried to get one of them to move, but Bluefur refused. With this, I would love if you would write a short story on them!! Here are some ideas.

1) The scene with Bluefur revealing her kits to Oakheart, but she accepts his offer to move.

2) The apprentice ceremony of her kits with Bluefur and Oakheart reflecting on how they move here. You could add some angst with Bluefur worring about what might happen with Thistleclaw as deputy, or prove that Sunstar is reasonable and still picks Bluefur as deputy.

3) A gathering where early in the “twist” that Bluefur and Oakheart are coming together and not meeting here is revealed early on. You could borrow some BB stuff and make it an aftergathering where Crookedjaw picks on Oakheart to make up for the blandness of gatherings.

Yes they could hypothetically command their entire clan to leave all together but they are clan cats, not twoleg dogs. They do not live in a state of constant surveillance and they do not hold warriors on a leash. There is no proof they're not just hanging out.

Doing this would make a leader look insecure and controlling at best, unless they had a good reason to suspect an individual cat was staying to break rules, but if that was the case then why did they pick the cat to go to the Gathering at all? Mind games? They could do this but WHY.

I don't understand how this isn't making sense. This isn't cat jail where the inmates all return to their cells after State-Enforced Social Time is over. You Can Stay Late When The Party Is Over.

do clerics ever stay at aftergatherings?

It's pretty rare they do, as they are authority figures much like a leader or deputy, but they have more wiggle room.

If they do, it's usually to discuss something important. Like a Halfclan surrogacy, or a health complication of honor sired kits. The Cleric MUST be chill with this though, a strict one is COMPLETELY within their rights to fuck the couple over and call it a void of the Queen’s Rights.

Goosefeather, Littlecloud, and Sagewhisker would have all been tattletails. Yellowfang, Featherwhisker, Mudfur, and Spottedleaf aren't snitches.

Featherwhisker probably stayed at these a lot, tbh. That feels right for him.

Do they tell stories of cats who've past in the Aftergathering? Like Firestar, after his assassination?

Of course! They talk about everything, really. It's also one of the only times you can really be honest about your feelings.

If you didn't LIKE the guy, you can just come out and say it. "I'm glad that softhearted kittypet is gone. I was so sick of his high-pitched voice and awful jokes."

And likewise, people can come back with, "Get killed and die."

It depends a lot on the cats who are present. The uniting theme of all Aftergatherings is that they are inherently casual events. You can talk about subjects that are taboo in good company, like dead leaders, Clan politics, inter-Clan conflict, so on.

Firepaw and Greypaw at an Aftergathering though!!

It would be at their first gatherings as warriors! Apprentices may not stay for the Aftergathering, it's warriors-only. Adult party.

They would totally get asked to tell the story of the ShadowClan coup, everyone would want the juicy deets. Graystripe would eat it right up and have a great time, he seems like he'd adore the attention.

For a brief moment, Fireheart would really feel like he belongs. This is before he's totally accepted by ThunderClan, remember, so this would be one of the first times in his life that he isn't being reminded that he's still an outsider.

Here, he's a young warrior telling a story of his first big achievement.

Could cats with great significance of their time be specifically sought out as sires/dames? Like I can imagine Hallowflight being some what of a hot shot, or Heathertail with her whole “reintroduction of a huge part of Windclan’s culture”

I know like Brightheart would as well since she’s both beautiful but also a clear survivor. Maybe Crookedstar for similar reasons (tho I don’t think he’d partake. Pretty loyal wife guy to me.)

100% absolutely. That's actually who most secret Honor Sires are, some cat who's especially pretty or renowned.

Something like 75% of these arrangements are made at the Aftergathering, which came into existence after the Queen's Rights were introduced. I also have a post on Honor Siring Etiquette if you'd like to know more about the rules here.

The biggest thing is "vetting," if your Honor Sire reveals your secret, in the wrong political climate, it can be a HUGE problem for everyone involved. The Queen's Rights only protect you if there are no problems.

Also here's an example of what an Aftergathering is like at the Lake territory, through the eyes of Shellfur.

So what do your leaders do all day? In the cannon clans it seems like they just sit around at camp all day and let the deputies do all of the work. Until the plot needs them anyway.

Leaders are given 9 lives for a very important purpose; they are supposed to live as their Clanmates do, understand them, and guide them as shining examples of what a warrior should be.

A leader who's inaccessible is considered a failure. Clans can't do anything about this until ASC and it's rare to begin with, but their clan WILL get upset about it.

Patrolling, sparring, hunting, and even cooking are all things a leader should be doing. Is it still very high-pressure? Yes. Ultimate authority rests on them.

So what's a deputy for?

Busywork. Day-to-day decisions that would prevent a leader from actually engaging with clan life. Setting up patrols, gathering news, settling small disputes, etc.

You could consider them a very authoritative secretary. If a Clan is being TOTALLY run by its deputy, that's a problem. If a Clan is BARELY being run by its deputy, that is also a problem.

So, expect to see cats like Firestar just around more often. It's not shocking to see him return from patrol or a little walk, carrying a mouse or two.

Imagine a cat stays after the gathering expecting some WILD party with flagrant cross clan relationships and kitty drugs and the SECOND everyone is gone and the after gathering starts, they start shit talking harestar's tunnelbun habits.

How do leaders and clanmates not notice cats are missing after gatherings? I'm guess its less controlled where cats are, so most don't worry or think about it formerly, but I'd like to know the actual reason too!

They do know! You just say, "I'll catch up with you guys later, I wanna take my time getting home."

"I'm not ready to leave yet, I'm gonna stick around and chat."

"Oh I'm not tired yet, and it's so nice out."

"I'll be there soon, Dewnose was actually going to tell this story about a squirrel hunt and I wanna hear it before I wrap up."

If you're not home by Dawn Patrol, THEN it's suspicious or alarming. But you don't stay ALL night. It's not like canon where it feels like the cats are living in a police state, lmao. You just stay late.

Firestar seems like he'd like Aftergatherings when he was an apprentice and warrior, but since it's kind of defined by not having the leaders' watchful eyes, is it something he misses when he becomes leader? Or does he pull wacky shenanigans like rolling in the mud after a Gathering and saying Oh, Firestar? No, I'm ThunderClan warrior Firemud. I'm just here to have a chill time.

Something often forgotten about Darkest Hour is that when Firestar becomes leader, he's actually upset and overwhelmed by how lonely it is. I think the fact he can't go to as many Aftergatherings anymore once he's deputy and then leader is a big part of that for my own rewrite.

The one who REALLY misses it though is Onewhisker.

I interpret him as being a coward, but a really nice one. One of his traits is that he got along with everyone back in the day, which Tallstar mistook as charisma. It's not. He's just a good storyteller who likes to fit in.

And as a side note, that's why Smoke was in love with him. He told such amazing stories of Clan life, he made himself into this decorated, impressive warrior, something he never really was. He's an average warrior with a friendly demeanor that other Clan cats find non-threatening. He lied to Smoke.

But anyway... Onewhisker thought he was loved. He thought he had friends and was liked. Then Mudfur tries to murder him, and there's a bunch of WindClan cats he used to think were his buddies on that patrol. Even cats in other Clans he thought were his friends were on the assassination crew.

Bonefall Onewhisker, in my eyes, is a character of duality. On one hand you have the cat who sacrificed a lot on the altar of being a good warrior, turning his mate and kittens away and being too ashamed to admit he broke the code and own up to it. On the other hand, he's NEVER been able to be the ideal, honorable warrior like Mudclaw-- he's got too many friends elsewhere, not brutal enough to make people truly fear him.

So, he can't be either one. He can't be the strong and authoritative leader that Mistystar and Blackstar are, and he can't be the self-assured, diplomatic revolutionary that Firestar is.

Tallstar wanted what he thought Onestar would be; friendly, not aggressive, open to negotiating. What happened was that Onewhisker saw his friends try to murder him for being too soft, and so, ruled with insecure fury trying to be something he never was. Isolated from everything that really gave him joy, feeling the pressure of Clan culture weighing down on him, he started to change.

Because, in the end, power acts through those who have it just as much as they can act with power. It revealed a lot about him.

And he can't go to the Aftergathering anymore. He is the authority that gave him this curse.

would there be any way for briarlight to attend gatherings? at least let her go to the daylight gatherings. i think a lot of cats would have a crush on her

It would be difficult for her to get across on the fallen log alone but I think it's impossible she's never attended. Like no one ever asks about the apprentice who survived a tree falling on her? Like she doesn't want to go and get the hot gossip?

Wildfur made the whole journey with the Version 1 of the barksled mobility device. They lifted him when he couldn't climb slopes. Lionblaze may have lost a lot of strength but he's still a big man, he can carry her just over the bridge. Any strong warrior can.

So yeah she goes, but she may have a harder time staying for the Aftergathering. Unless someone can be an escort to help her off the island and get her home; Forest is dangerous at night and Briar can't fight a large predator alone.
