Some of my favourite quotes from David Benson's 'Hunt v Lauda'
'He was nursing a toy yellow-eyed gorilla which made alarming noises and clapped a pair of cymbals attached to its hand.
"Whats with the gorilla?"
James looked tired. "It's called smiler. Alistair and Teddy gave it to me to celebrate my championship."
Teddy smiled benignly: "The gorilla was not very popular in first-class lounge I'm afraid."
"No," said James, "and they wouldn't let me blow my whistle either." He produced a police whistle and blew it.' - p7
"When we boarded the plane, he (James Hunt) insisted on joining mechanics in touring class until the lights were turned down for passengers to sleep." - p8
"Niki had always wanted to marry Mariella but she had refused to do so until he had become world champion." - p21
"The unsuspecting young actress Marlene Knaus was going to endure a trial that few women, even with a tremendously experienced and well-founded background, could have endured." - p21
"I telephoned James Hunt in Johannesburg where he is preparing for the South African Grand Prix. He told me, "I have been in daily contact with Susy and am fully informed about what is going on. I wouldn't stop her getting a divorce. I am trying to help her as much as I can so that she makes the right decisions. Obviously if she wanted to come back to me, I would help her do that." - p40
"I walked out of the dinning-room to an annexe alongside it, and sitting in the corner with a lady I didn't know was Niki Lauda; he smiled and asked a Carol and me to join him for a cup of coffee. He introduced the girl alongside him very simply, "This is my lady," She was, of course, Marlene Knaus, a very beautiful girl, with her hair in a rather severe style, brushed back, and a bun on the top of her head. We had a long chat about seat belts - both were empathetically in favour (that evening the house of commons in the UK were debating on making seatbelts in cars compulsory) - but the important thing was that I established a friendly relationship with Marlene when other people on the racing circuit cold-shouldered her, thinking she was merely some local pick-up. In fact, she and Niki were planning to get married as soon as they flew back from South Africa." - p44
"The main topic of conversation was the break-up of the long relationship between Niki Lauda and Mariella. Helen (Stewart) offered, with the best possible intentions, to get in touch with both Mariella and Niki is necessary to heal the breach. Having seen how close Niki and Marlene were in South Africa, I doubted if this were possible. As it turned out, a day after we had our discussion in Nina's home, Niki went quietly to a register office near Vienna and married Marlene." - p47
"He tried awfully hard not to hurt me." - (Susy about James) - p58
"James was standing right alongside me. Tears welling in his eyes. "It's stupid," he said, "It does not affect the performance of the car or make it any faster. Not even the Ferrari team protested and they were the ones who have the most to win..." - p62
"It was in triumph, therefore, that Hunt, six weeks before his 29th birthday, left for Britain in preparation for the John Player Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. With good humour and in high spirits, he took part in an event before the race and revealed another facet in his talents. It was at the Albert Hall at the Grand Prix Night of the Stars, a concert in aid of the Graham Hill Memorial Fund. The hall was packed with evening-suited celebrities who had paid up to £500 for a private box. Hunt was introduced by astronomer Patrick Moore who had just done a soft-shoe shuffle. Suddenly, Moore reached for a trumpet left behind on the bandstand by Chris Barber, who had done an earlier turn. "You're supposed to be good at blowing your own trumpet," he said, "so try this one." The audience dutifully laughed expecting a knockabout comedy turn. But Hunt took the trumpet, the studio band started to play and Hunt's clear, clean notes echoed through the vast auditorium. It was a memorable moment. When the audience realised that Hunt was playing for real, they roared their approval and then sat in silence as James plaved like a professional. Hunt's brother, Peter told me later: "I had a hell of a job convincing the BBC, who were recording the show, that James really was a good enough trumpet player to perform on TV. He learned to play at about 12 or 13 when he was at Wellington. He was in the school orchestra and the school band and played solo at concerts. Stuart Turner, Public Affairs Director of Ford of Britain, had a box at the Albert Hall. He turned to me after Hunt had finished his solo and said: "Now I have seen everything: James Hunt playing the trumpet at the Albert Hall we'll have Niki Lauda doing a comedy act next." - p73-4
"Niki himself, having almost killed himself in a first-lap accident there in 1974, has always campaigned against the Nurenburgring. He argued that the 1976 German Grand Prix should be switched to the Hockenheim Ring, a purpose-built circuit with outstanding safety facilities installed after the death there of Jim Clark in 1968. But Lauda was reviled by the Germans for his attempt. In practise at Nürburgring spectators displayed a huge poster of Lauda and his car. Across it was written, 'Lauda 20 kilometres per hour. Aus.' Ring bystanders are hard on anyone threatening the thrill of the race." - p80
"Sunday's race day was altogether depressing from the start. The young American driver Brett Lunger had heard the night before that his father had died unexpectedly in the United States and Brett decided to stay and go on with the race before returning home. It was to be a vital decision in the saving of Niki Lauda's life." - p81
"Jackie had a remarkable story to tell that Niki's agents had telephoned him soon after the crash and asked him to appear at a promotion for a new line of jeans which were being marketed in Niki's name. Jackie refused, saying he would only appear with Niki's permission. Niki was telephoned and they were told that he was determined to be there himself." - p86-7
"What would the situation be if Niki was fit to drive and Ferrari still wouldn't come to the track?" I asked Alastair, without hesitation he replied: "We will lend him a car so he and James can fight it out." - p89
"Then Niki arrived in his Jaguar with Marlene and Willi Dungl, his masseur/confidant, the man responsible for building Niki up physically in preparation for the race. There was a last-minute panic when it was discovered that Dungl had left his passport back at the house but he had an identity card and Niki knew that with Ferrari influence we would have no trouble getting Willi into Italy. Niki insisted on carrying out all the check-out procedures himself and we made a beautiful take off from Salzburg Airport." - p95
"At one point I was asked if I wanted to see a priest. So I said: "OK." He came in, and gave me my last rites - crossed my shoulder - and said "Goodbye My friend". I nearly had a heart attack! I wanted someone to help me live in this world, and not pass into the next." - p98
"I was watching his wife Marlene's eyes as she protectively, solicitously, studied her husband. She seemed almost proud of his scarred features." - p101
"A beautiful elegant grey/green-eyed young woman by the name of Marlene Knaus enjoyed life of a promising screen actress and model. A member of one of the most respected families in Austria she fitted easily into the jet set world of show business. She moved easily too in the rarefield world of medicine in which her grandfather was a renowned gynaecologist and in the artistic circles into which she was born as the daughter of a famous painter." - p101
"I used to smoke maybe one or two cigarettes a day, but from the time of the accident I have become a chain smoker. I know that this is not good for my health but it helps me through the crisis." Niki does not smoke and he says that this fact helped him recover from his lung injuries, but he does not reprove Marlene for smoking." - p102
"Marlene is a delightfully warm person. Her handshake is firm. Her eyes are steady and constant. They are the eyes of a woman who could inspire a man to great things, and she likes to touch the person that she is talking to. She looks at her husbands scarred face and gently strokes it." - p103
"Hunt, who had trotted through the driving rain along the length of the pits to salute the supreme courage of his world title rival Niki Lauda." - p104
"I just wish there bad been no accident, no disqualifications, no aggrevation, and Niki and I were fighting it out fair and square on the track. After what Niki has achieved, he deserves that at least. What Ferrari have done is to devalue the world championship and to cloud Niki's brave recovery. His recovery is absolutely amazing and he really is fit again." - p125
"His wife Marlene was happy with his decision. She had said earlier; "When he got into the car and drove away, I wanted to throw myself in front of it and stop him." - p140
"All Hunt knew was that he had to pass everything in sight. It took him two laps to catch and pass Alan Jones in the Surtees. Now he was fourth. Almost on the same bend he came upon Regazzoni in the Ferrari. Would the Swiss Italian let him through or hold him back? Ostentatiously Rega moved over and waved Hunt through ar a point where the Ferrari pit could clearly see his manoeuvre. As Rega passed his pit he gave them the two finger sign to show his disapproval that he had been dropped from the team for 1977." - p142

Edna Mae Harris (September 29, 1914 – September 15, 1997), sometimes credited as Edna May Harris was an American actress and singer. Harris was one of the first African–American film actress of the late 1930s and early 1940s, appearing in films featuring mostly African–American casts.
Born in Harlem, Harris parents were Sam, a boxer and customs inspector; Her mother Mary Harris (née Walker) worked as a maid. Harris' family is noted as one of the first families to have migrated to Harlem. Settling near the Lafayette Theater, Harris was convinced into pursuing a career in show business by Ethel Waters and Maud Russell who were frequent visitors to her family home. After being coached on her singing and dancing by Waters and Russell, Harris began performing in the Theater Owners Booking Association (TOBA). An African-American vaudeville circuit, Harris performed with TOBA from 1929 until 1933.
Harris attended Wadleigh High School (later known as Wadleigh High School for Girls) in Manhattan. During the summer after her sophomore year of high school, Harris worked at the Alhambra Theater doing dramatic sketches with a stock company. During this period, Harris received excellent training in diction and stage delivery through her association with veteran performers. Harris was also an excellent swimmer in high school, and in 1928 she entered the New York Daily News' Swimming Meet and won a championship.
Harris first real Hollywood break came when she landed a part in The Green Pastures (1936), portraying Zeba, starring with Eddie 'Rochester' Anderson. Harris was a leading lady in Spirit of Youth (1938), the story of the rise of boxer Joe Thomas, which paralleled the life of Joe Louis. Harris also had leading roles in Oscar Micheaux films, Lying Lips (1939), and The Notorious Elinor Lee (1940). Her film credits also include such Hollywood films as Bullets or Ballots (1936), Private Number (1936), and Garden of Allah (1936), and the independent film Paradise in Harlem in 1939. Between picture commitments she toured with Noble Sissle's Orchestra as a featured vocalist along with Lena Horne and Billy Banks. In 1942, she played fourteen weeks at the old Elks' Rendezvous as the mistress of ceremonies and announced a weekly radio show over station WMCA in New York City. She also did character dialect parts on many broadcasts for the Columbia Workshop Program. Edna Mae Harris got to tell her story in her later years in the documentary, Midnight Ramble (1994), about independently produced black films.
Harris was married twice and had no children. Her first marriage was to Edward Randolph from 1933 until 1938, then to Harlem nightclub owner Walter Anderson from 1951 until his death in 1983. Harris dated boxer Joe Louis sometime during 1939 and 1940. Harris dated Robert Paquin, who co-starred with her in the Lying Lips from 1941 until 1942. Harris died of a heart attack on September 15, 1997 at the age of 82.

📚In 1928, Eli Reid purchased 400 acres of picturesque property on the banks of the Chowan River in Hertford County, North Carolina. Soon after he acquired the land, Reid began turning the area into a Segregation-era resort for African Americans, and Chowan Beach was born.
As the resort began to take shape in the late 1920s, it was clear that something special had been started. Wide sandy beaches were built, and construction was immediately started on guest cottages, bathhouses, a dance hall, photo studio, restaurant, picnic area and magnificent German-made carousel. Chowan Beach was an immediate success, and throngs of African Americans began to stream in from across North Carolina and the East Coast to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and spectacular views--an oasis of fun in a social desert of limited opportunities and unfair treatment. The water was cool and refreshing, the crowds were friendly, and the music was hot, as the beach was a popular stop for musicians touring on the "Chitlin Circuit," including B.B. King, James Brown, Sam Cooke and The Drifters.
In this nostalgic new book, author Frank Stephenson brings back the glory days of Chowan Beach with an array of vintage photographs and a brief history of the area. Come along as Stephenson revisits the past of this beloved beach and offers a reminder of what it meant to generations of African American visitors.

I got through that movie and 4 baskets of clothes and I'm still foaming at the mouth so here's a circus fact. (Actually more just a clown fact since he wasn't in a circus as far as we know)
Gordon Bunch is believed to be the first African American person to perform as a clown but not very much is known about him. In 1904 he was booked as a performing artists at the St. Louis World's Fair to promote their top exhibit, Jim Key The educated horse. Jim Key was formerly owned by P.T. Barnum and was purchased and raise by an African American veterinarian by the name of Dr. William Key. The horse could spell, do math and other logical tricks.
A newspaper from that November wrote an article stating "Gordon Bunch, whose pantomimic feats in front of Jim Key, and his excellent makeup as a clown, have been most attractive, is another old-timer in the profession, and his work during the summer has been remarkable at producing results at the box office." So if they're calling him an old timer here he had obviously been performing for quite some time previously but this is the earliest account we can find. But hold on it gets a bit sour from here.
After the world's fair Bunch went on a Midwestern tour with the horse. And later joined the vaudeville circuit. Here is where things take a turn, I've summarized an article of an unfortunate evening for Gordon Bunch and this is really the most we know about him which is also extremely unfortunate.
April 9, 1910
While doing a show in Indianapolis a fire broke out in the vaudeville house Bunch was performing at that evening, everyone made it out except a young white woman who was left behind. Even though he was still in his makeup he rushed back in to rescue her and bring her to safety. She was unconscious when he brought her out but eventually came to and asked to kiss the man who saved her. By now Bunch was standing a ways out of the crowd trying to get his makeup off. She went over and when she finally spotted him she screamed a racist slur at him and then fainted. Gordon Bunch was then held in jail for 24 hours for making a white woman faint.
This is an extremely terrible thing to happen but thankfully from what I could find Gordon Bunch went on to continue to have a successful career in vaudeville!

Today’s compilation:
Africa Fête '98 1998 World Music / African Folk / Worldbeat
Here's a compilation that was put out by Island Records in 1998 in order to promote the upcoming Africa Fête festival, an event that started in late 70s France to showcase African musicians, and then also embarked upon US tours throughout the 90s.
But up front, I gotta say, that I did not enjoy this particular album. I really do love all kinds of music that comes from all corners of this planet, but the world music circuit is something that's a bit different, and you really shouldn't conflate it with all the music that occurs in places outside of the US, Canada, and most of Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Because as much as that circuit wants you to believe that it encapsulates everything that's not derived from those white-majority places, I don't think it really does. All the sounds that it presents can be eclectic, sure, but all of it seems to be the result of having been run through a salad strainer in order to be served up to your lovely puffer vest-wearing aunt, who really means well, but can't help but exoticize the shit out of it.
All this folky worldbeat stuff feels particularly catered to a specific subset of people—the NPR-loving crowd—and ultimately, while I do enjoy some of it, most of it's not really my bag, tote or otherwise. The stuff that the highbrow culture enjoyers don't get exposed to because it doesn't fit the adult contemporary banality of the world music scene is what I'm far more interested in. And none of that's really on this CD.
No highlights.

Charles Lenox Remond (February 1, 1810 – December 22, 1873) was born into an elite free family in Salem, Massachusetts. His parents, John and Nancy Lenox Remond had been married by the Rev. Thomas Paul, a prominent African American minister, and anti-slavery activist, in 1807. Nancy Lenox’s father was a veteran of the American Revolution, having fought with the Continental Army. John Remond had emigrated from the Dutch colony of Curacao as a young boy in 1798. In Salem, John Remond was first a barber and with the assistance of his wife, he operated a successful catering business. The Remonds were active abolitionists. John became a lifelong member of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Association.
He began his career as a public speaker on behalf of the antislavery movement at the age of seventeen. A supporter of William Lloyd Garrison, in 1832, he began work as an agent for The Liberator the Weekly Advocate, and the Colored American. He traveled throughout New England delivering antislavery lectures and drumming up financial support for abolitionist publications. In 1840, he gave a lecture at the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London, where he was greeted by repeated applause. After he returned to the US he suffered discriminatory Jim Crow practices. In 1842, he was the first African American to address the Massachusetts state legislature to protest racial discrimination on railroads and steamboats. He had a close relationship with his sister Sarah Parker Remond, who enjoyed a successful career as an abolitionist speaker. During the 1850s, they often traveled together on the lecture circuit.
He joined other African American abolitionist men, including Frederick Douglass, in the recruitment of African American soldiers into the all-Black Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment of the Union Army.
After the war, he continued to deliver public lectures protesting racism. A staunch opponent of segregation of any kind, he joined the American Equal Rights Association in 1867. He embarked on his last lecture tour that year in western New York. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
