Watching the new Acquisitions Inc. series on YouTube, and it got me thinking about how, if you want to actually learn to play roleplaying games, one of the best places to go in the actual play space is the first episode of the original podcast from 2008. Sure you might not learn the rules to the current edition of D&D (you'll instead learn the rules for an arguably better one), but they actually talk about how roleplaying games work! Like, do you need to do voices? You don't, but you sure can! Do you talk about your character in first or third person? Both are fine! Do you need to have a backstory? Not really, but it's fun to think of one while you play!

So while it's certainly not be everyone's flavor, I think it's a much better primer to how roleplaying games, specifically D&D, work than, say, Critical Role.

Recently got some flash commissions done by @catebeesart for the Acquisitions Incorporated team I'm a part of!!! I'm in love and have crushes on them all

Team H consists of:

• Iggy, reborn wildfire druid. Definition of Head Empty. Intelligence is 9. Never shuts up despite never having anything important to say. (My character!)

• Faelan, satyr divination wizard. Spent most of his childhood isolated in the feywild. A little unsure around new people, but a little mischievous around people he's comfortable with.

• Vanorin, eladrin whispers bard. Presents himself as charming and chill, but that persona is layered overtop of a dark and traumatic past. Always keeps his arms and hands covered, keeping secret the myriad scars and tattoos that cover them.

• Zavu, satyr armorer artificer. Used to be an archeologist: incredibly smart, incredibly socially awkward. Disaster lesbian/the embodiment of Gay Panic. Will blush and stammer whenever a cute girl interacts with her.

• Zamek, verdan clockwork soul sorcerer. Our NPC boss in AI. Always looks tired, who knows if it's from working tirelessly or from hardly working. The subject of many office pranks.

You know how sometimes a player will come to your table, where you are running an adventuring type game, with a character who cares not for the siren call of adventure? And they then have to be dragged around because the character actually has no motivation to be on the adventure?

That sucks, don’t do that! Or, learn from cartoonist Mike Krahulik, and his character Jim Darkmajiq (not to be confused with Jim Darkmagic, though you’d be forgiven for the error). Spoilers for recent Acquisitions Inc. stuff.

Jim Darkmajiq did not want to be an adventurer. So instead he became a stage magician! And he indeed had no interest in adventure, so one Omin Dran had to trick him into joining the party under false pretenses. And they play up this deception because it’s funny, with Omin coming up with new lies as Jim sees through them. And Jim buys the new lies because Mike wants him to be along for the adventure! But more importantly, he describes Jim gradually finding a taste for the adventuring life!

So there we have it, a reluctant adventurer played by a non-reluctant player. When you play a character like this, it is your responsibility to make them engage with the game! You can work with other players to accomplish that, because it’s fun to tell collaborative stories, but in the end it’s on your shoulders.
