With our pets, a house becomes our home
5k Hangster MeetCute (Explicit, but not very by my standards). Bradley is the vet (DVM) that Jake takes Brisket to after he adopts her and moves to Corpus Christi to be a flying instructor.
I started this fic before I saw @yeagrave's art, but this post is 100% Jake's lockscreen (and those are a set of Jake's spare dog tags).
                Monday mornings generally suck. The people who have left their pets wellness until normal business hours because they didn’t want to pay the extra emergency fees. He quietly judges them. This Monday sucks more than most though, because he’s covering another vet on what is meant to be his day off. But he doesn’t want to make the admin staff have to reshuffle the thirty or so appointments that he now has facing him in a long gauntlet of monotony. Hopefully there will be something interesting that pops up.
                He deals with the standard checkups, listens to heart murmurs, administers vaccines, makes notes for the techs, gives instructions about diets he knows get ignored by owners who think they know better. He has to change his scrubs when a dog vomits on him and yeah… he wants his day off back with a deep burning passion but pushes through. He can shower and blob when he gets home and bitch and moan to his friends. They can compare Mondayitis stories and see who comes out worst.
                He steps into the waiting room, and there’s only two people left, one a woman with two kittens in a carrier, and the other a man cradling a puppy. He’s only got one left for his ticket today, and it’s a puppy so okay, at least he gets to look at a cute puppy and a cuter guy.
                “Brisket?”
                The guy blushes and Bradley can’t help his smile getting bigger as he gestures toward the consultation room.
                “Uh, hi.”
                “Hi, I’m Bradley. What brings Brisket in today?”
                “She needs a general checkup, and I wanted to register her with a vet since I moved here in the weekend… She needs vaccines I think? And to be fixed? And I wanted to ask some questions?”
                “So she’s here for the works… can I have a look?” Bradley asks and the guy blushes again, looks down at the tiny bundle who looks back at him adoringly and Bradley has a thing for guys who like animals. Couldn’t be with anyone who didn’t like animals, wouldn’t feel like he could trust them. He hands the puppy over to Bradley and he handles her gently, lets her lick and sniff at him a little before lowering her to the examination table.
                “Tell me about how you got Brisket,” Bradley says, running his hands down the little body, grinning as she happily licks his fingers, tail wagging enthusiastically. She’s very sweet. Most guys like having big dogs, so he’s genuinely curious as to whether this guy chose this dog, or if he’s here at the bequest of someone else. Girlfriend or boyfriend maybe. Purely out of professional courtesy.
                “Uh, I’ve wanted a dog for ages. Finally getting settled in one place for a while so I figured it was finally time you know? So I went to the shelter in San Diego, not really intending to adopt then and there…”
                “She’s a rescue?” Bradley says, and he’s a little surprised. Because if they’re not big dogs then they’re usually little dog breeds, so some hybrid-cross-breed that some breeder thinks will be in demand. This little thing hadn’t looked like any breed he was familiar with, but there’s so many new ones and he’s not usually up with them all.
                “Well yeah, of course. She just had such a friendly personality you know?”
                “She is very sweet natured,” Bradley agrees, because the guy is clearly besotted with his puppy, and it’s adorable. He listens to her heart and lungs, takes her temperature and soothes her through the discomfit.
                “So did you have paperwork showing what she’s already been vaccinated for? Most shelters give you adoption paperwork?”
                “Oh, yeah, they did. One second,” the guy says, pulling folded pieces of paper out of his pocket and handing them over. On the top of the paper are all the details of the dog, and then down the bottom the details of the new owner. Jake Seresin. At least he has a name now.
                “Okay, so she’s all up to date with all the vaccines, she’ll need to come back in six weeks for a booster. And we don’t do on the spot spaying or neutering, you’ll have to make an appointment when she’s a little older. Try not to let her out unattended, because we don’t want to be adding to the puppy population, regardless of the fact that she’d no doubt make gorgeous babies…You a first time dog owner?”
                “I grew up on a ranch, had lots of animals. Horses mainly. Well, beef stock. But lots of working animals, not pets. She’s my first.”
                “Well, you made a good choice. She’s got a lovely temperament. Nice and healthy,” Bradley states, laughing as she tries to chew on his thumb and he reaches for a dog toy from the jar. “Okay, so she’s going to be mouthy, she’ll want to chew on things as her adult teeth come through. You might find a couple of puppy teeth lying around but they usually just swallow them. It’s all normal. You have any questions?”
                “Uh…I… um. Made a list.”
                “Sensible,” Bradley says, and this guy’s adorable intensity is commendable, he wished more owners thought to ask their vets the questions rather than trusting Google.
                “You’ve, uh, already answered a few of them actually.”
                “That’s good, what else have you got?”
                He asks about diet and exercise, sleep and routines, anxiety and separation and toilet training and Bradley answers them all, writes down a few notes and links to some reputable websites. Recommends a puppy obedience course, steers him away from problematic dog toys which can cause more harm than good. The appointment definitely runs well over the time, but it’s his last of the day and he’s got nowhere else he’d rather be, and after the day he’s had this is a nice silver lining.
                “Anything else I can help you with?”
                “No, I think that’s it. Thanks so much, it’s really helped.”
                “You’re more than welcome. I guess I just have a question for you now.”
                “Of course, what is it?”
                “I don’t usually do this, but you want to grab a drink sometime?”
                “A drink. Like…A date?”
                “Yep.”
                “Yeah. Yeah I’d like that.”
                “Great, let me get a card.” He grabs a business card, usually reserved for when he goes to conferences, carefully prints his personal cell phone number on the back and hands it over. “I look forward to hearing from you.”
…             …             …
                Jake gets back to his house and immediately lets Brisket out into the back garden, looks at the little rectangular piece of card and puts the number into his phone before he loses it. He puts the name in as Bradley but then follows it with the flame emoji, followed by the guy with the moustache and then the dog emoji. That’s enough to remind him of who exactly Bradley is. Not that he thinks he’s going to need the reminder.
                He spends some time looking at the websites Bradley has recommended, sends an enquiry about the puppy obedience classes. He’d already made an appointment for the booster shots and for getting Brisket fixed. Definitely doesn’t want to wait that long before seeing Bradley again. He grins. Only in town for five days and he’s got a guys number. Without even trying. Phoenix told him a puppy would help him make friends, that he needed as much help as he could, maybe she was onto something.
Hi Bradley. This is Jake. Let me know when you want to do that drink. I don’t start work until next week so currently free as a bird.
                It’s not too late, and it’s been a couple of hours. He’s not going to play hard to get. He’s never considered himself hard to get when the guy is as attractive as Bradley is, and he’s never been one to play games or overthink setting up dates or hookups. He’s hoping this is maybe more than a hookup.
I’m free most evenings. Tomorrow? Dinner?
                Jake grins, likes the idea of dinner even more than a drink, it’s a good sign; sends a message back, organizing a time but asking for recommendations of where they could go to eat.
…             …             …
                They settle at a table and quickly peruse the menu before placing orders with the hovering waitstaff. They’ve made superficial small-talk about the weather and how Brisket is doing, but he’s hoping he can find out more about Jake himself.
                “So you’re new to the area?”
                “Uh yeah, I guess. I lived here a while back but am back for work.”
                “And what do you do for work?”
                “I’m in the Navy. An aviator,” Jake says, like he’s a little unsure.
                “You’re shitting me…” Bradley says with a disbelieving laugh, because he’s had a guy tell him he was a naval aviator before. Except he hadn’t been and the lie had quickly bitten the other guy in the ass when Bradley had quickly realized and called him out on it. It had been a shame because Bradley had genuinely liked him.
                “Why would I lie?”
                “Well, some guys think it’ll sound impressive…”
                “Isn’t it?”
                “Well… maybe to some guys,” Bradley concedes.
                “Not you?”
                “No. Not to me. I’m more impressed you adopted a rescue, travelled across country with it and care about your puppy than what you might or might not do for your work.”
                “Most people care that I disappear for months on end. Or have a thing against the military in general.”
                “Huh,” Bradley states, realizing that that was maybe where his hesitance had come from. “I’m used to people being away for long periods,” Bradley states. Jake raises an eyebrow. “Sorry. I’m just… I was a Navy brat. Sort of.”
                “Sort of?”
                “Yeah. Grew up on bases, spent most of my life on them. We probably know some of the same people, if you’re actually a naval aviator…” Bradley says, still giving him an out, because maybe this guy is not realising the hole he’s dug.
                “How do you figure?”
                “My dad was a naval aviator, and until very recently my godfather was also a naval aviator, although he’s recently retired. Although I don’t think the Navy will actually ever get rid of him. He’s pretty entrenched.”
                “Yeah, what’s his name?”
                “Pete Mitchell,” Bradley provides, and Jake’s immediate response makes him relax a little. That’s definitely recognition of the name.
                “Maverick? Mav’s your godfather?”
                Bradley opens his mouth, snaps it shut again. Not just recognition but more than that. He's calling him Mav. Of fucking course he knows Mav, and he hadn’t used his callsign so this guy is legitimately a naval aviator.
                “You know Mav huh?”
                “Yeah. He’s… damn. He’s fucking insane but so good. He was brought in to train us and he’s just… that good.”
                “Don’t let him hear you say that. His ego doesn’t need to be made any bigger.”
                “He deserves his ego, he’s fucking legendary.”
                “You sound like a fan.”
                “Yeah, I guess I am. He’s… worthy of fans.”
                “Yeah well, he’s my godfather. So there you go.”
                “Wait, are you little goose?”
                “Oh god…” Bradley groans.
                “You are!”
                “Yeah yeah… this is quickly losing the date vibe.”
                “Sorry, I can bring it back to that,” Jake says, and his hand is suddenly resting on Bradley’s, warm and dry, fingers stroking the back of his hand.
                “Yeah, think you better or you might strike out…”
                “Wouldn’t want that…” Jake says, and his eyes are dark and amused and Bradley feels a little thrill at being the subject of his intense gaze.
                “So, you’re an actual naval aviator.”
                “Yeah, no wonder you aren’t impressed if you grew up hearing about Mav’s exploits. Fuck.”
                “Trust me, I find you plenty impressive.”
                “Good to know,” Jake says, his smile clearly pleased. “I’m one of the new flight instructors. Have a three-year stint here and Kingsville unless they need me for something special.”
                “Nice. Do you like teaching?”
                Their conversation changes as they talk more, discussing what their upbringings were like, their families, respective careers, all of Bradley’s current animals, favorite food and drink. It’s easy, their humor similar and gently teasing at times, making laughter come easily. It’s one of the best first-dates he’s ever had and it’s not until there’s a polite cough that he looks up to see the rest of the restaurant is empty, the waitstaff having clearly cleared up and are now just waiting on them. A quick glance at his phone tells him it’s nearly midnight and his mind bugs out a little.
                “Shit, sorry. I guess we got caught up talking.”
                “It’s fine.”
                He grabs the bill, leaving a generous tip for keeping them and tells Jake he can grab the bill next time, which has him murmuring next time huh under his breath, close to Bradley’s ear as they walk close together as they step outside. There are only two cars left in the lot and he guesses the staff must park somewhere else. He walks Jake to his car, only a few yards from his own truck.
                “I had a really good time tonight…” Bradley starts.
                “Me too. Wouldn’t mind doing it again…”
                “What are you doing Saturday?”
                “Having dinner with this hot guy I just met…”
                “What a weird coincidence, so am I…”
                He shifts forward, eyes searching Jake’s face to make sure there isn’t any hesitation before placing a gentle kiss on Jake’s mouth. He pulls back slowly, his lips quirking in amusement when Jake quickly gives him another kiss back, slightly firmer and longer and he feels the flicker of warm anticipation come to life in his belly. Potential something.
                “Don’t suppose I can tempt you to come back to my place?”
                “I’m definitely tempted, but I’ve got to get home. Dogs.”
                “Oh yeah, of course.”
                “Bring Brisket on Saturday. She can meet the pack…”
                He doesn’t want to mention that Jake could also bring all her gear, as well as a spare toothbrush for himself.
…             …             …
                They’ve been messaging since dinner on Tuesday and Jake feels completely settled into his house now, he’s driven to both Corpus Christi and Kingsville to familiarize himself with the routes. He’s taken Brisket to her first puppy obedience class, figured out the most convenient grocery store. All week he’s been looking forward to Saturday, packs some things and leaves them in has car, so if he needs any of it they’ll be close at hand. If it’s effectively a sleepover backpack for him and Brisket that’s between him and Brisket.
                He pulls into the drive of the house address Bradley had given him and looks at the tall fence that surrounds the back garden, can already hear barking and he looks down at Brisket who is sitting there, ears pricking forward at the sound of other dogs. He gets out, grabs her bag of stuff and carries her toward the house, glad she at least seems curious about the barking rather than terrified. He rings the bell, eyes widening at the sudden increase in barking and then Bradley is there, smiling at him behind the wavy glass of the door. Immediately the barking ceases, although there is a small yap, and then the door opens.
                “Hi. Come on in.”
                “Hi. Uh. Are you sure she’s going to be okay?”
                “Trust me, if anything she’ll rule them with an iron paw… feel free to put her down.”
                Jake doesn’t particularly want to, but Bradley is looking expectant, as are the five dogs who are all sitting and waiting obediently. He knows they aren’t all Bradley’s dogs permanently, that he’s fostering three and dog-sitting one, but he can’t remember which one is which. Most of the dogs are normal sized, one is huge though, and he wishes he remembered which one Bradley said was his. Then a cat walks in and insolently stalks in front of the line of dogs and collapses at Bradley’s feet.
                “Curtiss,” Bradley states, waving a hand at the cat with a sardonic sigh. The fact that none of the dogs have moved, except one, the largest, whose tail had started wagging enthusiastically makes Jake feel more confident about putting Brisket down. She is nowhere near as disciplined as any of the other dogs. Hell, the cat is probably more disciplined than Brisket, despite the fact it is a cat and takes direction from no one. Understandably she runs from him to Bradley, then to the cat, then back to Jake, then takes turns running to and around each dog and prancing playfully, like she expects them to play with her.
                “I’m going to give them the release signal and it’s going to get chaotic, but just trust me okay? They’re well trained.”
                He believes it, but sure enough in less than a second there’s barking again, six dogs suddenly all barking and then they’re running and Brisket is chasing after them and Bradley grins at him.
                “I gave them the signal for outside. Brewster is too big to not be well trained, and he generally gets all other dogs quickly following his lead.”
                “What kind of dog is he again?”
                “A Leonberger. He was surrendered to a local shelter because the owners couldn’t afford to keep him. He eats a lot. He went unadopted because of the costs associated with feeding him, raft of potential health issues as he aged and because he had zero training. I’ve had him for five years now.”
                “He’s massive,” Jake says, and he knows he’s stating the fucking obvious but when Bradley had said he had just the one big dog, he had never imagined this. He’s pretty sure Brisket is the size of one of his paws.
                “Yep. But as I said, he’s very well trained. I work with him every day as well. Come on, I promised you dinner.”
                “You cooked?”
                “I did, but it’s only one of the five meals I can make, so don’t go thinking I’m accomplished or anything.”
                “As long as it’s edible.”
                He takes the offered beer, watches as Bradley dishes out some pasta dish along with some garlic bread and then directs him to sit at a high bench on bar stools rather than at the dining table.
                “We don’t want Brewster putting his mouth into our food, at least up here we have a slightly better chance of protecting it.”
                “I thought you said he was really well trained?”
                “Not when I’m eating food. All bets are off if I’m eating.”
                Jake laughs and just like it did on Tuesday, conversation flows easily. Bradley can follow his work talk easily, obviously used to Navy talk because of Mav, his own work stories are equal parts hilarious and terrifying. He’s attentive, giving Jake his full attention and he finds he likes that a lot more than he thought he would. They finish dinner, Bradley quickly stacking his dishwasher before feeding the dogs. He watches as Bradley holds their attention before giving them the signal that they can eat and he can’t help but be impressed. He’s pretty sure Brisket is only going to have to look at him and he’s going to cave to her every whim. He does try and look like he’s not a complete soft touch in front of Bradley as he feeds her, but he doesn’t think he succeeds.
                They go into the back lawn and throw balls for the dogs, starting an elaborate game of keep-away for about twenty minutes before Bradley offers him dessert. He wants to ask if it’s Bradley himself on offer but doesn’t, instead takes the bowl of fruit and ice-cream and makes himself comfortable on the sofa, apparently safe from Brewster as he’s afraid of the scent of fruit. There’s a collection of boardgames, none of which he’s familiar with so he asks about them and learns that it’s another of Bradley’s hobbies.
                When they’re finished he follows Bradley back to the kitchen, notices it’s much quieter, almost dark outside and there’s no more barking and he looks around, suddenly anxious.
                “She’s just over there…” Bradley says, his lips twitching with a smile and Jake’s not sure if he’s laughing at him or… oh. That’s fucking cute. Brisket is curled up on Brewster, she’s somehow managed to climb up the almost mountain like body and curl up on top of him. He grabs his phone and snaps a photo, and then a few more because one is never going to be enough.
                “She’s all tuckered out… You going to wake her up?”
                Jake looks up at Bradley’s tone, and his eyes are hooded and Jake feels an immediate jolt of arousal spark through him.
                “No… she looks far too comfortable. Think I need to go to bed too…”
                “Yeah?”
                “Definitely. Show me the way…”
…             …             …
                They’ve not talked about what they’re doing, not in the actual physical and practical sense. Not in terms of sex and he’s definitely been raised in a house with the rule of if you can’t talk about it you shouldn’t be doing it. Which actually only goes so far when you really don’t want to share details of your sex life with your surrogate parents, or hear anything about theirs. He does agree in principle though, and there’s only one way to find out. Conversation hasn’t been difficult between them so he doesn’t expect this to be awkward either. He shifts slightly so he can rest his head on his hand while his other hand runs up and down from Jake’s shoulder to his hip.
                “Anything you don’t like?”
                “Uh…”
                “Anything you do like? Or prefer? I’m easy…”
                “Lucky me.”
                “Can I touch?”
                “Yeah…course.”
                Bradley lets his hand rub Jake’s cock through his underwear as he kisses him, enjoys the feel of Jake’s body moving against his hand, body and mouth. Jake’s free hand runs through the hair on his chest, then his shoulders, down his arm before there are blunt nails digging into his ass; then finally a large palm rubs his cock far too fleetingly to be anything more than a frustrating taste before it starts back at the beginning.
                “This okay?”
                “Yeah, look, if you do something I don’t like I’ll say something okay?”
                “And if I do something you like?”
                “Actually, you could work on that a little bit more…”
                He kisses him hard then, grinds their hips together and palms an ass cheek in his hand, holding Jake tight against him.
                “Yeah, fuck…”
                He shifts, pushes Jake back to lie on his back and then straddles one of Jake’s thighs. He runs both hands down Jake’s naked chest, leans down to kiss him again, hands on either side of Jake’s shoulders. Jake looks good, is confident with it, Bradley can’t help but find it attractive. He shifts a little, Jake’s hands are all over, hips lifting up to try and rub against him and Bradley would tease him for being impatient but he is starting to feel the same.
                Their breathing is getting shallower, and he kisses over Jake’s collar bone, licks a little into the slight dip in his clavicle and assumes it’s a little ticklish from the way Jake laughs a little. He runs a hand down Jake’s side, his mouth moving down his chest but his eyes are on Jake’s neck and mouth, muscles taut and mouth open as he breathes harshly. He’s clearly given up waiting for Bradley to pay attention to his dick, has his own hand rubbing himself, occasionally detouring to rub Bradley’s dick as well. He moves his mouth over Jake’s pectorals, sucks gently at one nipple, wanting to know if this is something Jake –
                 “Fucking hell,” Jake exclaims, body jerking up as if electrified and Bradley pulls back immediately.
                “Good or bad?”
                “Good. Do it again …”
                Bradley grins and seals his mouth around his right nipple again and sucks, flicking his tongue over the harder nub of flesh in his mouth and Jake’s entire body arches again and Bradley can’t believe how good he looks. How good he feels.
                “Fuck, why does that feel so good?”
                “Lots of nerve endings…”
                “It was a fucking rhetorical question…”
                He snorts, lowers his mouth back and presses down with his lower body at the same time, wants to give something for Jake to grind against, push him toward climax. Jake is reading his body easily, his hips angling slightly to thrust against the juncture of his thigh and hip, hands both on Bradley’s lower back urging him closer, pulling him down and Bradley lets a little more of his weight press down. The moan Jake lets out is gratifying and he reaches a hand between them and presses harder, feels the dampness from where he’s leaking pre-come.
                “Lube?”
                “No, I like it a little, uh, rough… you go ahead though, if you want…”
                “Nope, I’m all good…”
                His lips are red and swollen and Bradley wants to make him look like this all the time. He runs a finger under the elastic of the underwear and then Jake’s hips are up and he shifts back and out of the way. Watches as Jake pushes them down and he can’t actually get them off with the way Bradley is half-kneeling over him, one thigh between Jake’s legs. He shuffles down the bed. Drags his hands down Jake’s legs, tugs the underwear off before moving back up, placing gentle kisses on knees, thighs and hips before he licks up the length of Jake’s cock, kisses the head and lets his moustache scrape against the skin gently. Jake is shifting, clearly wanting to move more but holding himself back and he’s got far too much control for Bradley’s liking.
                He wraps his hand around Jake’s cock, a little firmer than he would usually, but Jake had said he likes it a little rough. He jerks it steadily, watches as Jake’s eyes squeeze shut, mouth opening in a silent gasp and he keeps going. It’s been a while, but he knows how to multitask and he wants to hear and see what will happen next. Knows getting Jake off is likely going to make him come as well. He settles his mouth over the same nipple he’d sucked before, and it’s a little pink, and he sucks again. The resulting words from Jake’s mouth are nonsensical in between loud gasps for air and what he recognizes as his name. He doesn’t say anything, can’t really, with his mouth busy sucking intently. His hand has sped up and he’s resting a fair bit of his weight on Jake’s leg, partly pinning Jake beneath him and his cock is hard and leaking. One of Jake’s hands is fisted in his hair, holding Bradley to his chest and then his whole body goes taut like a rubber band being stretched before it snaps back and then Jake is coming all over his hand and he gentles the sucking to more gentler licks and swirls of his tongue because it’s most likely going to be a little bruised.
                 “Ungh… fuck…”
                He doesn’t bother moving very much, just shoves his own underwear down enough to take his cock in his hand and jerk himself off, hard and desperate to come, no need to try and make it last longer or hold back. He moves enough to kiss Jake and he feels a hand try to come and help him and while he appreciates the intent it isn’t something that is even a consideration right now, he’s too close and he doesn’t need much…
                “Bradley…”
                Yeah, that’ll do it. He comes with a groan, his come joining Jake’s on his stomach. He rests his forehead against Jake’s neck while he tries to steady his breathing. Their breathing is the only sound he can hear outside of his body, heartbeat pounding in his ears, waits a moment before he lets out a long shuddery breath and kisses Jake on the chin.
                “You okay?”
                “What’s that saying, ask a stupid question?”
                “Get a stupid answer…”
                “Yeah.”
                He grabs some tissues, passes the box to Jake and they wipe themselves clean and he feels fantastic, hopes Jake feels similarly. He kisses him, takes the dirty tissues from his unresisting fingers and lies down beside him.
                “Stupidly okay. You?”
                “Yeah. That sounds about right. Damned good for a first run…”
                “Mmm. Imagine what it will be like when we’ve got a few more test runs behind us.”
                “Always room for improvement.”
                “That’s very true… I’m just going to go and let the dogs out but I’ll be right back. If you wanted to stay that is?”
                “Yeah, staying sounds good. Just… uh. Brisket normally sleeps on the bed with me.”
                “Think she’s found a new bed.”
                “Lucky for me I won’t be lonely I guess.”
                Bradley grins.
…             …             …
2 MONTHS LATER
                He’s running a little late, but not by a lot. He’s messaged both Jake and Mav to say he’s running a bit behind due to a surgery requiring a bit more time. He walks into the restaurant and spies them sitting at a booth near the back, tells the hostess he’s with them and raises his hand in greeting as Mav is standing to give him a hug.
                “Bradley!”
                “Hey Mav, good to see you,” Bradley says, returning the tight embrace.
                “Good to see you too. You’re looking good. This is… Jake.”
                Bradley leans down and gives Jake a kiss, takes his time and licks into his mouth.
                “Hi.”
                “I hope you don’t meet everyone that way…”
                “Only my boyfriend Mav,” Bradley says, laughing. “You didn’t tell him?” he asks Jake.
                “Nope, one of my joys in life is keeping him on his toes,” Jake says, grinning at them both as they sit. Mav is rolling his eyes and huffing, but Bradley can tell he’s a little pleased. At least he knows now why Bradley really didn’t care about him inviting someone else along to dinner.
                “How long has this been going on?” Mav asks, looking between them with interest.
                “Couple of months,” Bradley provides.
                “You move fast,” Mav says to Jake dryly.
                “What can I say? I know a good thing when I see one.”
                “Plus Brisket loves me.”
                “She does have exceptional taste.”
                “Much like her owner. Although don’t you get the names mixed up? Brisket, Bradley and Brewster? There’s definitely a theme there…”
                Jake blinks, looks at Bradley and he just shrugs.
                “We could get a couple more pets and name them Brownie and Bruno and you’d have the whole set.”
                Jake laughs, eye brow quirks;
                “Sounds like a plan.”

The waves lapped at the sandy beaches of Miramar as the bright sun hung high in the sky. It was spring and the crowds were small, letting Bradley, Cora, and Nickie have some privacy and peace.
“No!” Nickie giggled as Bradley picked him up. “Put me down!”
“Alright.”
Nickie shrieked as Bradley dipped him into the water, causing Cora to smile softly to herself. She sat up on the shore, reading a book, while Nickie and Bradley chased each other around the beach. Nickie was now seven years old and set to start second grade in the fall. And Cora was trying not to cry about it.
“Daddy!”
“What?” Bradley asked innocently, causing Nickie to push against his chest.
“You’re cheating!”
“What? How?”
“You are!”
“I think that you’re just making things up now, Nickie!” Bradley stated, jokingly swinging Nickie’s feet into the waves again.
Nickie shrieked and clawed at his dad, trying to stay dry and away from the waves. Cora tried to focus on her book again, but it was getting more and more difficult. Bradley had always prided himself in keeping in shape, but his boyish bean pole shape had officially given way to a more masculine and broad stature with his regular and intense exercise. And with the mustache fully grown in and Nickie in his arms, Cora’s brain was pretty muddled.
Nickie and Bradley eventually got out of the water and returned to where Cora was sitting. Nickie settled in the sand, content to build a sandcastle, leaving Cora and Bradley to talk quietly about more serious subjects.
“I got accepted,” Bradley stated quietly, causing Cora to nod slowly.
“Pensacola then?” she asked, turning to Bradley with a quietly grief-stricken expression.
She knew that it was always Bradley’s desire to get into flight school and become a naval aviator. That was never hidden from her. But it was difficult to let him go to the other side of the country to pursue his dreams. And leave her and Nickie behind.
“For two years?”
“Yeah,” Bradley agreed, nodding along. He looked over at where Nickie was sitting in the sand, blissfully unaware. “I have a month left.” Cora nodded and looked away. Bradley turned to her, his gut twisting when he caught her expression. “And I know that you can't move. Not when you’re this close to graduating yourself. And Nickie has school and . . .”
“We’re just going to have to make it work,” Cora stated, leaning back in her seat.
“I’ll call every day.”
“I know you will,” Cora replied, turning back to him with a small smile. “I know, Bradley."
He could only nod in return.
When they got home that night, Bradley took up the task of making dinner. Nickie sat in front of the TV, watching a rerun of a movie, while Cora slipped away to their shared bedroom. Bradley glanced up from the pot he was stirring when Cora placed a small box down on the countertop. A very familiar small box that he gave her years ago.
Bradley stared at her with a measure of surprise, but Cora stood there with a confident expression. Bradley turned off the burner and grabbed the box. Opening it, he stared down at his mom’s engagement ring. He had gotten it resized for Cora after he found out about Nickie and now all he had to do was place it on her finger.
“I think this is the part where you get down on one knee,” Cora stated, causing Bradley to snort.
“Yeah, I think it is.” Turning to where Nickie was still sitting, Bradley called out to his son. “Nickie, can you come over here for a second?”
Nickie got up and walked over to where Bradley and Cora were standing, a bit confused at the scene. He ran up to his dad and looked at the little box in his hand.
“What’s that?”
“It’s a ring. For Mommy,” Bradley explained, slowly getting down onto one knee. “It means that Mommy and Daddy promise to love each other forever. And it means that we’re going to get married.”
“Aren’t you already married?” Nickie asked, confused.
“No,” Cora mused, brushing Nickie’s hair. “Not officially.”
“Why not?” Nickie demanded of Bradley, who laughed in return.
And with some help from Nickie, Bradley slipped the finger onto Cora’s finger, where he hoped that it would stay for the rest of their lives. Cora pulled Bradley in for a quick kiss before the two of them turned to Nickie to enjoy the moment as a family.
~~~~~
A week later, not long after Bradley’s graduation ceremony, Maverick drove Cora down to the San Diego courthouse. Bradley and Nickie had gone ahead to get the very small ceremony set up and now all that Cora had to do was show up. Parking the car, Maverick and Cora got out and headed up the stairs with their arms linked.
“Are you ready?” Maverick asked Cora softly, trying to keep up a brave face.
“I’m ready,” Cora agreed, pressing a kiss to her dad’s cheek.
The doors opened and Maverick led Cora, dressed in a simple white dress from a department store and with a bouquet of flowers from a supermarket, down the makeshift aisle. Nickie stood beside his dad at the end of the aisle, dressed in a little black suit. He was supposed to stay besides Bradley for the ceremony, but he quickly ran to his mom’s side.
Cora smiled and reached out a hand for Nickie to grab. He held her hand diligently, happily marching with the tune down the aisle. And Bradley, dressed in his dress whites, couldn’t help but let a few tears slip out at the sight.
The ceremony was short and sweet, but filled with so much love that it didn’t even matter. Nickie stood in between his parents the whole time, while Maverick tried to hold in his emotions on the side. Ice gave his shoulder a squeeze and Maverick let out a breath. It was probably ridiculous to get choked up when they already had a kid together, but he couldn’t help it.
“You may now kiss the bride,” the officiant stated, causing Cora and Bradley to lean in.
Cheers broke out among the small crowd as they shared their first kiss as a married couple. Turning to their friends and family, they waved and took one of Nickie’s hands each. Walking back down the aisle as a family of three, they couldn’t help but get lost in the bliss of the moment. They were married. It was official.
The festivities were held at the Mitchell house. Bradley stood to the side, watching as Cora chatted excitedly with Penny and Sarah. Nickie and Amelia were running around, being playfully chased by Slider. And just as Bradley was about to head over to his wife, Maverick approached him slowly.
“Bradley,” Maverick greeted him with a stiff nod.
“Maverick,” Bradley returned with a similarly awkward expression.
Over the years, the two of them were forced to co-exist for Cora and Nickie’s sake. Bradley tried to avoid any direct conversation and between Maverick’s various deployments, it wasn’t difficult to pull off. But whether or not he liked it, Maverick was the grandfather of his son and now his father-in-law.
Bradley would never be able to fully cut him out. Not again.
“Are you having a good time?” Maverick asked, causing Bradley to nod slowly.
“It’s my wedding. Of course, I am.”
“Have the two of you told Nickie yet?” Maverick questioned, earning a shake of Bradley’s head.
“No, not yet. Cora wanted to break it to him after the wedding,” Bradley replied quietly, already dreading that conversation.
“I’ll be Miramar for a few weeks,” Maverick stated, causing Bradley to turn back to him. “I’ll look after them.”
Bradley nodded slowly and turned back to watch Cora practically glide over to chat with the Kazansky kids, chatting animatedly and absolutely radiating joy. Maverick cleared his throat and straightened up, turning back to Bradley.
“I do have a wedding present for the two of you, but I wanted to run it by you first.”
“Why me?”
“Because you’re the one I’m more worried about,” Maverick stated, causing Bradley to frown a bit defensively. “I was considering selling the house to the two of you. I would just give it to you, but somehow I don’t think that the two of you will go for that.”
“No,” Bradley agreed, shaking his head. “But, it’s your house.”
“Well, after I finish up a few weeks here, I’m going out to Europe and then after that, who knows? But Cora and Nickie, they’ll be here for at least another year. And that’s Nickie’s childhood home.”
“I’ll talk to Cora about it,” Bradley decided, turning back to watch his wife. “And we’ll go from there.”
“Of course.” Maverick straightened up and grabbed his beer again. “Congratulations.”
Bradley watched Maverick walk off to where Penny was standing with a mix of emotions on his face. But he didn’t have long to stew in his thoughts because Nickie and Amelia came running into his legs to try and escape Slider.
Cora walked off to grab a drink and smiled when she spotted Ice standing over by the cooler, looking like he was waiting for her. He handed her a beer, which Cora took gratefully, and waited for her to take a few sips before making his offer.
“Now, under the short notice, we didn’t really get you a proper wedding present.”
“We didn’t want any,” Cora dismissed with a wave of her hand.
“No, no, you should get one,” Ice stated, reaching into his suit jacket. Pulling out a plastic card, he held it out to her. Cora took it and stared down at it with a confused expression. “It’s a room key to a suite in a hotel across town. You have a night off.”
“Oh, Ice,” Cora breathed, giving him a hug. “Thank you.”
“It’s all paid for. Just go and enjoy your night,” Ice told her, returning the hug.
“Thank you, Ice,” Cora replied, pulling back from the hug.
Bradley and Cora, after the party wound down and they said goodnight to Nickie, drove across town in the Bronco. After the concierge told them the directions to their room, Bradley insisted on carrying Cora over the threshold.
Cora laughed and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, letting him carry her and set her down on the bed. Kicking off her shoes, Cora pulled Bradley down for a needy kiss. Bradley hiked up her dress and let his hands roam over his wife—that’s right, his wife—as Cora hurried with the buttons of his jacket.
They wasted no time in sharing their first night as a married couple, unwilling to let go of each other or be parted for very long. But when they eventually settled down, Bradley got up from the bed to grab a towel and some champagne for them. Picking up the bottle, Bradley read the note on the back.
“I am not responsible for any children that may come out of tonight’s activities. Be responsible. From Ice,” he read aloud, shaking his head before returning to his wife’s side.
~~~~~
Today was the day that Bradley had to say goodbye. The jubilation from the wedding had died down and now he had to board a plane and fly to the other end of the country. San Diego International Airport was packed that morning and Bradley kept a tight hold on Nickie as they waited in line for him to check his bags.
Cora was silent behind him, her gaze focused forward, and her hand gently brushing against his back every few steps. The attendant took Bradley’s bag and checked them before handing over his ticket. Bradley thanked them before leading his family over to the security checkpoint. Setting down his backpack, Bradley kneeled down to Nickie’s height.
“You’re going to be a good boy for Mommy, right?”
Yeah,” Nickie whimpered, nodding to his dad.
“And you’re going to listen to your teacher and do well in school too, right?” Bradley continued, brushing Nickie’s hair back with his hand.
“Yeah,” Nickie agreed, letting out a quiet sob.
Bradley held out his arms and Nickie ran into them without hesitation. Cora tried to not break down herself as Nickie’s cries reached her ears. A few people glanced over at them with pitied glances and Cora tried to not let it get to her. Bradley moved to stand up, but Nickie refused to let go of him, so he stood up with Nickie in his arms.
Turning to Cora, he took in her appearance for a moment before pulling her in for a tight hug. Cora fisted the back of his uniform, burying her face into his chest, and letting out a few tears herself. It had been so long since Bradley was that far away from them for an extended period of time, and she wasn’t ready for it. She had gotten used to his presence. She had incorporated him into her life, into Nickie's life, completely.
And now it felt like there was a piece missing.
“I love you.”
“I love you too,” Bradley replied, pressing a kiss to her head. “I’ll text you when I land.”
They shared an emotional kiss before Cora pulled away, knowing that he had to go. She gently pulled Nickie into her arms, causing him to cry harder and fight her hold. Tucking him against her chest, she motioned for Bradley to go.
He leaned down and grabbed his backpack before giving her one last kiss and his family one last squeeze before he left. Cora waited until he disappeared around the corner before letting out a choked sob herself. She wouldn't let herself fully breakdown with Nickie in her arms. Turning quickly for the parking garage, she held her son tight to her chest and rubbed his back.
“I want Daddy!” Nickie sobbed into her shoulder, causing Cora to whimper herself.
“I know, sweetheart. I want him here too,” she whispered, resting her head against Nickie’s own, walking quicker to avoid prying eyes. “But he’ll be back. And we’ll call him every night, okay?”
“But why is he leaving?”
“He has to go to work, sweetheart. That’s all.”
“But we need him!”
“I know, baby. I know," Cora whimpered softly, resting her head on top of his own.
Meanwhile, Bradley was sitting in a stall in the bathroom of the airport, head in his hands as he silently sobbed. He always knew that he wanted to be a naval aviator. But now, right when he was on the cusp of training to become one, he couldn't help but wonder if he was doing the right thing.

"I swear I'll beat up the son of a bitch, just they wait."
Any other normal person would've considered to stay away from you as you growled those words out loud— or would've asked if you were okay from a safe distance. Your bestfriend beside you stilled for a moment, wondering why you were so hellbent on fighting someone and.. who was it? Another naval aviator? Or your soulmate that you always complain about?
Robert Floyd looked over to where you're sitting, curious to what you'll complain about to him. He saw the mix of worry and anger swimming in your eyes as you continue to look at the rectangular strip on your wrist. Before he could even ask, you showed him the orange stripe which is slowly turning red.
On the day a person is born, there's a rectangular shaped color on their left wrist. The color ranges from green, yellow, orange, red, and black. These colors represent on how safe your soulmate is in their current situation. Green being they're completely fine, red means they're in a dangerous situation (which rarely happens for most cases), and black means that there's a high chance for them to get killed in the situation they're in. The stripe will glow when you made a physical contact with your soulmate.
Having the mark, you can deem it as both a blessing and a curse.
Bob scanned your wrist, his eyes clouding with confusion. Was your soulmate a secret spy? In the military? A criminal? Why are they always in danger? The possibilities are endless.
He has to admit that even though it isn't his soulmate, he can still feel a small sense of dread flooding into his system. What more of his best friend sitting beside him? He could only imagine. "I'm sure they'll be fine, it's not the first time. Have faith in them, y/n/n" He says, trying to comfort you as he pats your back gently— albeit a little akwardly, but that's just a normal Bob thing.
You sighed, stress visible on your face as you rubbed your temples. "I swear Robby, my soulmate could die before I even get to meet them." Your mid-western accent slowly surfacing at the end of your sentence. He watched you as you plopped down his bed, sighing loudly.
"Maybe they're doing it as a revenge? I probably scare them when I go on missions. But why would they endanger themself?" You ranted to yourself as Bob looked at you sympathetically. "Y/n/n, how about try getting some sleep? We have to leave for topgun early in the morning.." He said softly. You sighed, agreeing with him. He walked you over to the front of his family's house.
"I'll see you in the morning, Robby." You smiled, waving at him and going over to your house, which is directly across from his.
Tumblr media
"Well what do we have here?"
The human ken doll asked, watching amusedly as you neared him and Coyote, Bob silently following behind you.
"Crash! My favorite pilot, missed me?"
Jake greeted you with (as you'd like to call it) his pretty boy smile, you rolled your eyes playfully as you neared the pool table. He gave you a wink as you sat the down next to Bob.
"Statefarm, I was dreading to be flying with you again actually." You shrugged, taking his newly opened beer. A sound of protest goes unheard as you took a swig of the beverage. "You're gonna buy me another beer, Crash. And It's Hangman. I thought we had something special?"
"Whatever." You waved him off, "Go play." Hangman rolled his eyes, you took some peanuts from Bob. "You talk to me as if I'm a dog. You wound me."
You looked up at him and asked, feigning innocence. "But, Isn't that what you are?" A chorus of 'Ooooh's were heard in the background. After a while, Phoenix, Payback, and Fanboy entered the mix.
"Who's he?" Pheonix's eyes darted to Bob who's sitting beside you. "Who's who?" Coyote asked, all of them looked at Bob simultaneously. "Since when did you get here?" Coyote followed up.
Bob looked at them and offered a smile "Oh I've been here with y/n/n." He motioned over to you.
"The man's a stealth pilot." Jake said. "Weapons System Officer, actually." Bob corrected, Jake nodded. "With no sense of humor."
"Hey! you mess with him, you mess with me." You warned them, slinging an arm around Bob. Hangman raised his hands, "I'm just saying."
"Well you better shut that damn mouth, statefarm." Jake just mumbled, talking about grabbing a few more beers and ringing it up on some old timer.
"What do they call you?" Pheonix asked, looking at Robert.
"Bob." He answered, Payback smiled. "No, your callsign."
"Uhhhh.. Bob."
"Bob Floyd, you're my new backseater? From Lemoore?" Pheonix asked, he smiled. "Looks like it, yeah." You patted Bob's shoulder. "I'll be right back, Robby. Just gonna get more beer." You said as you walked over to Penny, finding Jake as he ordered four more beers.
"And you-" he turned around to face you. "-Still owe me one beer." You smirked, "Make that two." As you grabbed one of the few beers he has. You decided to follow him back, seeing an unfamiliar guy sporting a hawaiian shirt and mustache which weirdly as it sounds— looks good on him. You don't know how long you'd been staring at him, time seemed to slow down when you laid your eyes on him.
The moment your eyes met feels like you got your breath knocked out of your lungs.
You're also pretty damn sure you felt the mark pulse.

tgm fic recs
@stcverogers tagged one of my fics in a rec list yesterday and i thought it was such a good idea, i wanted to share some of my own favs
in no particular order:
* * *
hangman
one time thing // kiss the sun (fight the fire) // love that’s a real long shot  He nods again like that’s exactly what he expected you to say. “I think you’re wrong. Doesn’t matter now though, does it?” i would rec anything by @callsignvalley but this is probably the series that got me most. i also love tailspin and its rooster follow up steady
california coast in your green eyes // i’ll carry my bags just until i can hold you again (2 different series) Bob’s older sister gets the news that his plane went down during a training drill, and shows up at the hospital at the same time as an arrogant pilot. //  Six months after they break up, Jake shows up at Julie’s Family thanksgiving. A second chance holiday romance with fake dating, family drama, and fall festivities. @theharddeck these fics, esp carry my bags, feel so so real and human to me, i love julie and the characterisation of jake feels so on point i also love her series out of the clear, blue sky as well as kinda might, sorta like, love you a little bit + its follow ups
i’ve been holdin’ out so long (4 part series) You can’t stand Hangman, but your dreams lately say otherwise. He notices. @steadfastconviction i adore Bluegrass and her sass
do not engage (series) You hate Hangman. Really, you do... Or so you like to think, until it begins to seem like that distaste might not be as strong as you’d prefer to believe. @clints-lucky-arrow the entire f&f universe is great but Duchess especially is a badass
afterburn (series) It had been clear from the moment you got inside a cockpit that you were going to be something special. You certainly weren’t the youngest Naval Aviator to be invited to TOPGUN, but you had been the youngest to graduate at number one in more than thirty years. Which is all the more reason why it was so tragic that you would never, ever, be able to fly again. @top-hhun is a master of setting a scene
the off-season (series) It was supposed to just be one summer. But somehow you found yourself living in your grandparent’s Maine vacation house indefinitely. It was quiet when the summer tourists left, but tolerable. That was, until your brother’s friend from college needed a place to crash and he somehow wound up staying in your guest bedroom. Also indefinitely. @ereardon just started this series but i’m so into this world (au) already
fuck (the universe) (series) You’re a Kazansky–Tom “Iceman” Kazinsky’s youngest daughter–and you’ve taken after your father and become a Naval aviator. You finished at the top of your class at Top Gun and have worked diligently and fruitlessly to get to where you are now: North Island. You don the call-sign Wisteria not only because the beauty of the flower but because of its lethal qualities. i mention @roosterbruiser below bc i read landslide first but holy fuck indeed
* * *
rooster
landslide (series) It’s been almost three years since the accident that took half of her, and Faye “Clover” Ledger seems fine, really. She loves her old house, she has a perpetually expanding vinyl collection, she’s got a job she likes on base, and she is only a short drive from the beach. She’s grounded--literally. @roosterbruiser landslide is one of those fics i have to read in little bits because it’s just too good. beautiful writing that just transports me (and i love faye, she may be the most developed fanfic oc i’ve ever read - and I love her taste in music)
baby let’s play house // pt 2  you got yourself in trouble. bradley has a bit of a savior complex. together, you come up with what could potentially be the worst idea in the longstanding and illustrious history of bad ideas. @seasonsbloom i just really love this fic, it shows all the quietest best parts of bradley
first impressions  at the induction day for the newest recruits of the Golden Warriors of VFA 87, rooster assumes you’re a civilian, instead of, you know, a member of his team? you see how far you can push it before he figures it out.  @ohcaptains‘s pilot in this fic is the badass bitch i wish i could be. as well as fucking funny.
like i can (series) After yet another bad date and tired of swiping on apps, the Dagger Squad steps in to help you out by setting you up on a series of blind dates. Much to Rooster’s dismay. @sometimesanalice perfect blend of cute, funny and heartmelting
* * *
bob
he’s so pretty (when he goes down on me) // pt 2  things between you and Bob are strictly business: he’s your backseater, and that’s all there is. @seasonsbloom‘s writing is so good it made me want to try writing fic myself
* * *
hangman x rooster
we’re fools to make war In a Walmart at three am, between beef jerky and tortilla chips, with the lights flickering above them like it’s the fucking twilight zone, Bradley wants him more than he’s ever wanted anyone. or: it's a hundred degrees in texas. i can’t find a tumblr link for this but the writer is @baroness-elsa. this is 66k words and i read it in two days which probably says enough. holy shit.
* * *
there are many many more (this fandom is FULL of talented writers, damn) but this already took me an hour so that’ll be part 2 haha

WIP: A few of them
I was tagged by @howdyrat and I decided to post a bit of a few of my most awaited WIP I have 🤷🏻‍♀️
Bodyguard AU
Instead of taking a cab like Jake thought they would, Bradley takes him to the parking garage of his apartment building and guides him into a nondescript car and drives him back to his place.
Once the elevator doors open up on his penthouse , the alpha has his guard up immediately, gun drawn as he takes careful steps into the apartment, forcing Jake to follow him from behind.
What is Bradley sensing that Jake isn’t?
And then he hears it. There’s someone in his kitchen.
A New Beginning (or the one where Jake has twins)
“What are you guys doing here? Did you come see daddy train on the beach?” He says as he kisses and tickles them, standing up with them in his arms.
“I brought them here thinking they could use it as a little pick me up, you know? Gretchen says once she catches up to them (and finishes ogling the rest of the very exposed naval aviators who are suddenly very quiet and interested in what’s happening.) “And I believe I was right,” she adds the last part when she sees them laughing, trying to break free from their father’s hold.
Jake puts them down, pointing them in Javy’s and Nat’s direction and off they go with shrieks of uncky Javy and auntie Naty.
“How are they doing?” Jake asks, still ignoring the rest of the team.
“A lot better,” she looks at the kids then back at her employer. “No fever, they are eating a bit more than yesterday, no vomiting today.”
Jake + Katie (his 12 yo daughter)
“I miss her, too, monkey. Every day.” He confessed to her.
He and Danielle may not have been in love, may have entered this marriage out of convenience to get spousal benefits and save face as two queer people, but for the longest time she was his best friend and losing her took a part of his soul too.
“Now, how about you come back with me to base and then I take you out for some ice cream? Maybe we can even convince uncle Javy to join us.” He offers her with a smile, trying to move past the somber mood.
It works like a charm.
Instead of screaming Taylor Swift songs they sing Dolly Parton. They are singing the last few notes of 9 to 5 when Jake pulls up between Javy’s Audi and Bradley’s Bronco for the second time that day.
A little disclaimer: All of these are one shots and are hangster stories! First one is ABO, second one is past mpreg and the third one is ‘normal’.
No pressure tags: @redfurrycat @hangmanbradshaw @saengak 💞

“Hey Bob?”
Bob looked to his left, finding Natasha leaning on the doorframe to the storage room. “Yeah?”
“There’s a woman up front asking to speak to the manager.”
He stifled a groan, placing the book in his hand back in the box. “What’s the problem?”
Nat smiled, something he hadn’t expected, and shook her head a few times. “No problem,” she told him, pushing off the doorframe, and leading the way back towards the front.
Bob frowned. Last month, when the library focused on books with queer characters, several people came in to complain and a few withdrew their donations. Bob and the rest of the staff were brainstorming fundraising ideas, but they’d had little luck so far.
“So, what’s going on?” He asked, falling in step with Natasha.
“I’m not sure,” she replied. “But I don’t think it’s bad.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Well, for one, she’s smoking hot,” Jake interjected as coming into their line of view with a stack of books on naval aviation in his arms.
Natasha glared at him. “Her hotness has nothing to do with this.”
“Oh, so you agree she’s hot?” Jake argued, not even bothering to hide the grin forming on his face.
Natasha opened her mouth to argue back. “Guys,” Bob scolded, the beginnings of a headache forming at his temples. Jake and Natasha had always bickered, but his tolerance for it varied. Today he was not in the mood, especially if he was about to be yelled at by a dissatisfied patron.
Sometimes, he questioned the decision to hire his friends.
Jake followed behind them to the welcome desk where Bob expected to find an angry-looking woman tapping her food with her arms crossed.
Instead, he and his band of merry men found no one. Not a soul in sight anywhere at or near the vicinity of the desk, and neither was the man who drew the short end of the straw and was supposed to man the desk today.
“She was here when I left,” Natasha swore, looking around for the now lost woman.
“Bradshaw probably scared her off,” Jake commented, depositing the stack of books on the counter. “Wouldn’t be the first time.”
Bob reached up and massaged his temples, knocking against the frames of his glasses with every movement. He needed to hunt down the bottle of Tylenol Natasha kept in the staff room.
“If she’s not here,” Bob started, leveling Natasha with a stare. “I’m going back to sort through the new inventory.”
“Robert Floyd, don’t you dare leave,” she said, her voice clear and stern, making him stand up straighter as if his grandmother had risen from the grave just to criticize his posture. “You stay right there. I’ll find her.”
He made eye contact with Jake, who simply shrugged, as Natasha walked off to locate the mystery woman.
Bob leaned against the side of the semicircular desk while Jake hauled the stack of aviation books down onto the desk itself to run through the computer. He listened to the typing, wondering where Bradley had wandered off to. It wasn’t the first time he’d neglected his responsibilities, but it was the first time he’d lost a guest.
“What do you think it’s about?”
Jake peered up at Bob. “I don’t k–”
One of the heavy double doors opened a crack, allowing a small squeaky “help” to escape through. Bob leapt forward and pulled the door, revealing a young woman with shoulder length dark hair, smooth brown skin, and sunglasses covering her eyes.
“Thank you,” she said, her chest rising and falling while she gasped for air. She stepped forward, but her shoe caught on the doorstep, making her stumble and almost collide with Bob’s chest.
He caught her by the arm, fingertips holding onto the soft skin of her bare arms while the other remained on the door handle. “Are you alright, ma’am?”
She stood upright, sliding her sunglasses up on her head, and straightened out her dress. “I’m okay,” she told him. “But please don’t call me ma’am ever again.”
“Noted,” he replied and offered her a reassuring smile. “Anything we can help you with?”
She stepped further inside, allowing Bob to release the door. “I’m supposed to speak to the manager,” she began, glancing at the cork message board. On it was an array of flyers advertising babysitting services, information on community events, and the annual blood drive coming up next month. “A woman named Na–”
“There you are,” Natasha exclaimed as she appeared in the doorway to the right that led toward the computer room.
The woman spun on her heel. “I’m sorry. I had a missed call from my agent, and I didn’t want to disturb anyone, so I took it outside,” she explained. “I told the guy behind the desk to let you know, in case I didn’t make it back before you did.”
“Can we fire Bradshaw now?” Jake asked as he stood, leaning his forearms on the wooden surface.
“No.”
He shrugged. “Worth a shot,” he mumbled and sat back down. Bob looked at Natasha expectantly, waiting for her to make the introduction, but it didn’t come before their guest offered Bob her hand to shake.
“You must be the manager, Robert Floyd,” she said with an inviting smile.
He shook her hand, feeling a shiver run down his spine at the contact with her palm. “Bob’s fine.” He let go, flexing his fingers as the tips of his ears warmed.
“Bob,” she repeated, corners of her mouth still turned upward. “I’m Norah Lebbai. I, uh, so, my first book is about to be published, and I guess I just wanted to know if I could have the release party here.”
Bob’s eyes darted to Natasha, who leaned against the doorframe with her arms crossed in front of her. She raised a brow, but offered him an encouraging nod.
He looked back at Norah and pointed a finger at the carpeted floor. “Here?”
“Yeah,” she beamed, enthusiasm encapsulating her entire body, and her dark eyes widened with excitement. “We can make it a double event. Like my release party and a fundraiser for the library at the same time. Not that I think you need funds, but I know libraries are under-funded, especially the smaller ones, so I just thought that might work. My publisher will pay for everything to do with my event, like catering and drinks, but I could talk to them and maybe set something up, so people will donate to the lib—”
“Miss Lebbai, why don’t–”
“Norah,” she corrected him, a frown etched on her face. “My high school math teacher called me Miss Lebbai and I’m having flashbacks to crying over algebra. Repeatedly. For years.”
She shuddered and laughter bloomed Bob’s chest, but he offered her an amused smile instead. “Why don’t we go to my office to talk?”
The grin returned, and she adjusted the sunglasses on her head. “Lead the way.”

Icemav/Hangster Headcanon, basically an AU where Maverick and Rooster never had a falling out, married Icemav, and Hangster have known each other since they were teenagers.
Carole passed away when Bradley was in middle school, and Mav then officially adopted him.
Ice and Mav live together with Bradley, and he called them dad and pops (uncle Ice when outside of the house cause, you know). Ice and Mav basically raised Bradley, and made him fell in love with everything aviation. When he told them he wanted to go to the naval academy and one day become a fighter pilot like them, they supported his decision.
Jake’s father was also a navy fighter pilot and eventually became an Admiral. Ice knew Jake’s father and have served with him at some point. They have a good relationship.
Jake’s father is actually a good father but he’s just always very busy so he’s never around. After becoming an Admiral, he somehow become even busier. Meanwhile, his mom was a lawyer that eventually became a US senator, and also very busy and was never around. Jake has one older sister and one older brother, his sister became a naval surgeon, and his brother also became a pilot.
After adopting Bradley, Mav decided to permanently teach at Top Gun so he can settle down and be around him all the time, meanwhile Ice also started to get promoted and trying his best to quickly rise in rank so he can also settle down with Mav and Bradley instead of being sent around all over the world.
Jake first met Bradley at a naval functions, Ice and Jake’s father introduced them. They became friends ever since.
Jake hangs out at Bradley’s house all the time, and he saw how Mav was always around, and how Ice always tried to call Bradley even when he was deployed. Eventually he got kinda jealous cause his parents were never around and started to pick fights with Bradley all the time. It didn’t help that jake actually had a crush on Bradley so it’s kinda also like pigtail-pulling on his part. They still hang out together tho, they just always bickers all the time.
Bradley and Jake both went to the naval academy at Annapolis, but Bradley was 1 year ahead of Jake. Natasha was 1 year below Jake. Nat eventually became besties with Bradley after getting stationed together at some point.
Eventually Icemav got legally married when DADT was repealed, Bradley was Mav’s best man, Slider was Ice’s. Hangman was also present at the wedding.
Bradley and Jake got together at some point after their first stint at TOP GUN, but broke up shortly after. They kinda became the infamous couple who have that on-again-off-again relationship in their circle of friends. Everytime they hang out together, everyone would always bet whether they’re currently in their on or off phase. People also jokingly called them the royal couple, since both Admiral’s kids are basically navy royalty at that point.
Sometimes after Bradley became a fighter pilot, Mav heard about the darkstar program and got interested. I mean, it’s Mav, so of course he would want to try being the fastest man alive. So he quits teaching and beg Ice to pull some strings to get him to be the test pilot for that program.
The TGM movie still happen the way it was, but Ice is alive (just like Val, he survives the fight with cancer but lost his voice).
In the beginning of the movie, Bradley and Mav was fighting. Bradley was mad because he thought Mav recklessly endanger himself for fun at the darkstar project. Mav’s locator malfuction so they didn’t know whether or not he survives the darkstar exploding, it took 12 hours before they found him and it shook Bradley up real bad cause at that point he’s still very traumatized from almost losing Ice to cancer, and at the time he also didn’t know about Admiral Cain trying to shut down the project as the reason why Mav did what he did. Meanwhile, Mav was mad that Bradley insisted to go on the suicide mission despite the danger.
Ice used his connection to help Mav return to TOP GUN to train the kids for the mission, cause he knew, his husband might be the only hope to make sure that everyone survives that mission.
Bradley didn’t know that Mav was going to be their instructor, and when Mav came, he got angry thinking Mav was there to try to make sure he didn’t get send out on the mission.
Rooster and Hangman was currently on their off phase during the training. Hangman actually has a good relationship with Mav, and he agreed with Mav a lot when critisizing Rooster’s flying cause they both worry. So they also fought a lot because of it.
Everything else is basically the same, and right before they fly the mission, Rooster somehow found out from Hondo the real reason why Mav did what he did at the darkstar project, and then Mav actually selected him to be his wingman. He tried to talk, but like in the movie, Mav basically told him they’ll talk after.
During the mission, Ice was present at the carrier. Imagine how he feels when he heard that both his husband and son was shot down. And when they came back in the F-14, he immediately ordered Hangman to go and escort them back. He’s basically, boy bring them both back to me in one piece and I’ll give you my blessing to do whatever you plan to do to my son after ;)
Afterward, everybody actually talk, Mav and Roo dealt with their misunderstanding, then Jake finally just went on his knee and propose to Bradley, cause we’ve been dancing around each other for years Roo and I almost lost you and I just can’t wait anymore please just marry me ok.
Ice managed to convince Mav to finally accept promotion so he would stop flying dangerous test planes and instead became the commanding officer at TOP GUN.
Bradley and Jake got married. This wedding was a huge deal for everyone, there’s a huge bet going, and Bob won the bet lol. But really, everybody’s just happy that Admiral Kazansky’s kid finally got married with Admiral Seresin’s kid after years and years of all that drama.

Things/headcanons about my firefighter!Bradley and still a naval aviator!Jake AU because I can't seem to stop... I'm sorry, guys...
- Jake has tried to talk Bradley into bringing his turnouts for a roleplay thing in their bedroom (b/c, let's be honest, the suspenders alone...) but Bradley insisted that the turnouts are still carcinogenic even if they're washed regularly. The furthest Jake managed to talk him was putting on his uniform, button-up and trousers, and his decorative helmet (one he has on his Firefighting Shelf at home)
- Jake, just like Mav, buys the firefighting calendars Bradley is featured in - just for obviously very different reasons. He takes one to deployment if it's longer than three months. His bunkmates make fun of him until he shows them the Mr August he's dating...
- the first time Jake was there to see Bradley after a bad day at work, he didn't know what to do. Bradley was just so quiet and unresponsive and didn't really want to tell Jake what happened. It had continued for another two days (Bradley was supposed to have four off) and Bradley's barely been sleeping at night so Jake drove down to his station under the pretext of doing groceries and asked the on-shift crew for help with dealing with it. In the end, they took a bath together and Jake let him cry it out before talking him into booking an appointment with his psychologist
- Jake also had to get used to Bradley's ever-present need to help people. Whenever they'd go out on dates, they'd inevitably run into someone who needed help - a lady that locked her car keys, a teen that couldn't turn on his car, lost tourists, there was an older lady that was struggling to mow the lawn once and Bradley just up and left him in the middle of the date to do that. By that point Jake was so used to it he just made them some cocktails and gossiped about sweaty, half-naked Bradley with her.
- They're on a flight to Texas to meet Jake's parents when some lady goes into labour and Jake hears, 'Do we have medical personnel on board with us?' and just sighs before telling Bradley, who's sitting there, looking at him with puppy eyes, 'Just go'. It takes longer than the flight itself and the airport medics are taking their time so Jake goes to pick up their baggage alone and his mama is waiting to pick them up and he shows up alone. She's all 'where's your bf?' b/c it seems like he ditched Jake and Jake is just done but also like fond and tells her 'Delivering a baby, I guess'.
- Bradley's whole crew calls him 'the real lieutenant' for years after they met, even when Jake got promoted. Even when Jake married him.
- Jake has also once brought half his squadron to Bradley's station's charity car wash - both because it's for charity and because he wanted to show off his boyfriend in a wet t-shirt *shrugs*
- Bradley volunteers for Pride every year and the first year he and Jake are together, he gets a permit from his chief that allows Jake to ride along with him in the passenger seat
- Jake used to think he could do Bradley's job easily (the same way Bradley'd've been a good aviator if he wished to be) but then they witness a car accident and Jake sees Bradley calling 911, doing triage, crowd and traffic control, and first aid at the same time while Jake just hands him things he asks for until the ffs and EMTs arrive
- the kid that just started working under Bradley (Nate) in the fic absolutely gets adopted by Bradley and (reluctantly) Jake. Jake complains for years that he was tricked into dating a single dad and Javy points out to him that the kid was clearly already Bradley's even the day they met for the first time so he shouldn't be so surprised
(I swear firefighter Bradley was supposed to be Buck-fied but instead I Bobby-fied him more than anything else...)
im putting this under the cut since some people my find this icky but yk...
- Since Bradley is trans in this au even of it's a teeny-tiny mention (he's now going to be trans every time I write him, I'll admit...) so depending how they decide to have kids, you can just imagine the heart attacks Bradley would give Jake when he continues to do all of the above while pregnant and not see a problem ('i'm fine, Jake, I'm just pregnant, I can still do everything on my own' said when he's barely able to get up from a chair on his own). He'd for sure be like that one headline, pregnant firefighter rescues car crash victim and goes into labour, or something along those lines
- Also, for baby shower/gender reveal Bradley insists he won't show up unless everyone promises him that the gender reveal will be non-flammable b/c he's not setting California anymore on fire.
- They get cute photos of the baby/babies in their helmets (Bradley's decorative one and Jake's spare Hangman helmet)
(there'll be more headcanons to come, probably...)

Hangster
For years, the Jaegers have been the last line of defense for humanity. But with the kaiju adapting and evolving the PPDC is desperately searching for new ways to fight them. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw has been a Naval Aviator for the past five years, risking his life to supply the Jaeger pilots with air support. Now he’s been recommended for the Jaeger program himself. Too bad that the officer in charge of training the new recruits is his estranged uncle, former Jaeger pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Icemav
Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell was there when the first Kaiju made land. And he was still there, years later, fighting a never-ending war of chaos and destruction. Only this time, he’s in a Jaeger. When an accident puts a rift between him and his co-pilot, Goose, the Marshal decides to fix their problem by throwing a new person into the equation. Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, is ice cold, no mistakes. He’s as competent as them, and he’s not afraid to let his displeasure known. It grinds Maverick’s gears to no end. But Iceman ends up being there for him when Goose was ripped out of their Jaeger and hurled into the dark seas. Dead. Can Maverick ever stop blaming himself for letting it happen? And can he let Iceman in, knowing the two of them together are only going to end in heartbreak?
just to see each other (feel it all) by susiecarter {M}
Icemav
After Goose's death during a fight with a kaiju, Maverick left the PPDC and didn't look back. But his self-destructive bender gets interrupted by Charlie Blackwood, showing up to invite him to participate in a brand-new weapons development program, codename Top Gun: the first two-pilot jaegers to ever be deployed in the fight to defend humanity. That means Maverick's going to have to get back in a piloting rig again—and he's going to have to do it while drifting with another pilot. Drift compatibility means getting each other, understanding each other, on a level nobody else can beat; so whoever his partner is, at least he's not going to get stuck with the Iceman, who pretty much hates him. Right?

“ oh, you best believe i’m signing up for all the babysitting duty. ” + “ that kid’s gonna be the most insanely loved baby in the world. ” regular au
aviation-themed baby shower. AVIATION-THEMED BABY SHOWER.
let's gooooooooo
Tumblr media
Jake's mom planned the baby shower. Party planning and hosting were just some of her many talents. The entire thing was a surprise. Jake and Ronnie weren't allowed inside that particular barn for two days while she set up.
When the day of the shower finally arrived, they got some inclination towards the decor when his mom told him to put on his flight suit - and Ronnie was directed to put on a dress in a similar shade of green. And their assumptions were correct. The small pole barn was decorated to Naval aviation perfection. Model fighter jets were hung from the ceiling, a banner strung up above the snack table read baby girl landing soon, and the balloon arch set up over the loveseat where Jake and Ronnie would sit was in that classic navy, gold, and white. It was perfect and definitely didn't make Ronnie cry.
No, what really brought on the waterworks was the fact that everyone was able to make it to the party. Jake's entire family (all four brothers included) and extended family, but also Bradley, Maverick, Penny, and the entire Uranium Mission squad. The first hour of the party was just spent catching up and, of course, everyone getting a chance to touch the bump.
Eventually, Jake forced Ronnie to sit down and eat something, but that didn't stop a certain aviator from plopping down on the couch next to her in order to feel the baby.
"Oh, you best believe I am signing up for all the babysitting duty!" Ji-Yung shouted excitedly as Ronnie moved her hand over to where the baby was kicking up a storm.
"Once you live like not seven hours away, then sure," Ronnie giggled back.
Ji-Yung winked at her. "I think I can convince your brother to move."
Across the room, Jake and Maverick were watching the interaction with fond smiles and crossed arms.
Maverick patted Jake on the back. "That kid's gonna be the most insanely loved baby in the world."
"Don't we know it."

"Is she alright?"
"Lieutenant L/n is very lucky. She only sustained a few bruises, and a gash on her face. We would like to keep her overnight so we can continue to monitor her."
"I see... Thank you, doctor."
"The pleasure is all mine. I'll get going now, Lieutenant."
You heard the voices talking back and forth stop as you slowly tried to open your eyes— immediately shutting it as the bright flourescent light from the ceiling temporary blinded you.
"Where.. Am.. I?"
You could feel your throat was dry and your voice came out hoarse, cracking at the end.
"Y/n! Y/n! Can you hear me?"
Scrunching your brows, you snapped. "Can you stop shouting? I'm not deaf, statefarm. I'm surprised you got into heaven too." Your voice coming out softer than what you intent to be. You slowly opened your eyes again as you tried to adjust to the brightness of the room.
Hangman sighed, quite relieved. "Glad you're still the same. You're not dead, you're in the hospital. Also, excuse me?"
"You're excused."
"And here I was, about to grab you some water so you can properly talk." He scoffed, you looked at him and cracked a small, playful smile. "Do be a dear and get me one, Seresin."
Hangman grumbled but still complied, you took a long sip from the straw as he assisted you. "Thanks, Hangman. I appreciate it."
He flashes you with his signature smile, "Anytime, Crash. Just don't pull shit like that again." You rolled your eyes.
"I'm serious, all of us were about to have a heart attack."
"Sorry 'bout that." You took a second to scan the room for any sign of your best friend. "Where's Bob?" You asked, curious on where he is.
"He passed out."
"What?"
"I know. He'll be here soon." As soon as Hangman said that, a knock was heard along with 'Are you sure this is where she is?' Most likely from Bob.
You chuckled, "Yeah Robby, this is my room. Come on in." You heard the doorknob turn and there he was, your bestfriend who was not pleased as he scanned your current state. Hangman excused himself as he got called by Coyote.
Pheonix raised an eyebrow at you as she, and surprisingly Rooster entered your room, following Bob. "You and Bagman? Since when?"
You looked at her incredulously. "What? We're not together."
"Then why is he in your room?"
"Oh I don't know, let me guess— he's probably checking on me since I'm his wingman?" You asked sarcastically while Bob fretted over you like a mother hen.
"Hey Rooster, how are you?"
You cracked a small smile as you greeted your crush fellow naval aviator. Rooster smiled back, "Shouldm't I be the one asking you that, Crash?" He chuckled, resulting in you to blush and laugh. "Well, I think you already know I feel like shit."
"But you don't look like one."
"Tell that to me when I don't have this gauze on my cheek." You chuckled, trying not to let him see you flustered at his compliment.
Bob and Pheonix shared a knowing look to each other, which went unnoticed to you and Rooster .
"We were worried about you, Y/n/n." You heard Bob say. Turning to him, you sighed. "Sorry, Robby. I was quite scared myself too, I thought it was the end of me." You looked down at your hands. Noticing how the room changed into a more serious atmosphere.
"I probably scared my soulmate half to death too." You joked as Bob shaked his head. "I think you did."
Rooster perked up, you and Bob aren't soulmates?
As stupid as it sounds, he tried his best to look for your wrist secretly. Trying to see your mark. What he didn't expect was he felt his mark pulse when he saw yours.
He took a step back. What in the world? Why does he feel his mark pulse?
"Rooster? You okay?" Pheonix asked, taking note of his sudden change in demeanor. You and Bob looked to Rooster, seemingly confused.
"U-uh yeah, I just— I remembered I need to talk to Maverick about something." He mumbled as he took another step back before turning and leaving the room.
Bob could already sense the hurt and dissappointment rolling off you in waves. Pheonix furrowed her brows
"What is up with him?"
Tumblr media
Rooster knew that was the most pathetic excuse he has given in his entire life.
Not only was it a half-baked plan, his body language gave it away. Hell he didn't even know why he told he'd be talking with Maverick, when he knows that they know there's a tension between them two.
He found himself walking into hard deck, going straight to the bar. Not paying attention to Penny and Maverick flirting across him.
"Bradshaw." He heard an all too familiar southern voice called out. Bradley turned to look around and saw Hangman from the table, a knowing smile on his face.
Rooster already know how this is going to go.
"Hangman." He mumbled, turning back his attention to the bar about to order a drink.
"You know, a little bird told me what happened while y'all were listening to us on the radio earlier." Hangman said, slowly coming over to where Rooster's at.
"And I heard something.. strange." Jake smiled, circling around Rooster as if he was a predator. Rooster looked at him, "I don't want to hear any of your bullshit, Hangman."
"Oh, don't worry Bradshaw. I won't take up too much of your time. I just wanna.. ask something." Jake said, an unknown glint present in his eyes. Without even letting Bradley speak, he continued.
"Your mark turned dark red to black. Didn't it, Bradshaw?"
Rooster felt his body went rigid as he heard those words uttered out by Hangman. He looked at the smirking blonde with anger slowly consuming him.
He heard Hangman laugh, "Don't even try denying it, Bradshaw. You already gave it away."
Bradley looked at him, eyes seething in anger. "What is it to you, Hangman?" The Texan boy hummed, "Well because I know who you suspect your soulmate is."
"That is none of ypur concern-"
"Oh but it is, especially if it's about her." Hangman's expression turned serious, as he stared down his fellow naval aviator.
Bradley looked at him, "I don't even know who you're referring to-"
"Crash. Don't fucking deny it, Bradshaw. I know you think she's your soulmate."
Rooster balled up his fists, every ounce of his being trying not to punch Hangman. Out of the corner of his eye, Coyote, Fanboy, and Payback slowly started to gather around him and Hangman, readying themselves in case a fight breaks out.
"What if she is? What are you gonna do about it?" Rooster challenged, standing up from his seat as he came closer to Hangman, not breaking their stare.
Hangman smirked, "I'll make sure you won't even lay a finger on her to find out."

Top Gun
Tumblr media
something to come home to (Bradley Bradshaw x Reader)
After living and working in San Diego, you meet the handsome pilot Rooster at a bar one night.
melting the Ice (Icemav)
Two months after their mission onboard the Enterprise, Iceman finds out Maverick is leaving Top Gun. Enraged, he travels back to San Diego to find out what's been going on with his wingman...
hold my hand (Icemav)
Iceman reflects on his relationship with Maverick leading up to the mission.
A Seresin Serenade (Hangster)
Jake Seresin doesn't do gifts, but when he and his husband Bradley Bradshaw are approaching their one year wedding anniversary, he does what he can to give his husband the perfect gift.
Tomcat (Icemav)
Maverick was used to unexpected things happening in his hangar out in the desert. However, the seasoned captain was left clueless about what to do, when he found a sickly-looking kitten, hiding inside his hangar.
Mr & Mr Kazansky (Icemav)
Iceman and Maverick are secret agents that get tasked with killing each other, inspired by the movie Mr & Mrs Smith
Raspberry Beret (Icemav)
Soulmate AU, where you have matching symbols with your soulmate.
Effulgent (Icemav)
100 word ficlet exchange.
Sunshine & Roses (Hangster)
Flowershop & tattoo artist AU
Captain Mitchell (IceMav)
After more than twenty years of service, Maverick was due to receive his promotion from Commander to Captain. Maverick wasn’t ready to be a Captain, who was he kidding?
steal me with a kiss (Hangster)
What do you get when you take one ridiculously cocky model and one stubborn makeup artist? A recipe for disaster of course, but with some luck maybe the outcome won't be as bad as initially expected.
get your head in the game (Hangster)
Hangman thought he'd thrown in the towel when it came to his volleyball days, but when Rooster, the handsome team leader from another company, invites him to join the summer tournament he knows he's done for. There were worse fates than spending the day on the beach.
Raggedy Top Gun Manor (IceMav)
It is said that room 86 became haunted after Nurse Charlie died in there. She worked at the Top Gun Manor - a retirement home for naval aviators - until she laid down for a nap one day and never woke up. The Manor closed down after too many reports of bumps in the night and opened up again as a haunted house. Iceman never believed a word of it. Ghosts aren't real. Maverick, on the other hand, takes their jobs as tour guides way too seriously and it might bring them closer together than what anyone expected

Tell me what to write weekend...
Reply or send an anon with letters/numbers and I commit to writing a minimum of 250 words for that fic. (Numbers indicate fics I am consciously working on completing. Letters are fics that are getting completed because people ask for me to work on them... the astericks are soon to become numbered fics. Yes I have a ranking system.).
