The Tale of Lara Dorren and Cregennan of Lod.
"...Cregennan of Lod and Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal, the legendary lovers, torn apart and destroyed by the time of contempt. He was a sorcerer and she was an elf. [...] What might have been the beginning of reconciliation was transformed into tragedy"
—Andrzej Sapkowski, The Time of Contempt.

Headcannon: Lara Dorren edition
What is is that drives Lara on her path from what her society has decided for her to become what she (in)famously becomes?
Do you have another question that doesnt require my brain to work xD I’d like to think Lara Dorren has always had the “betrayer” in her, only some people didn’t, or didn’t want to, see it (maybe a certain elf).
Love? The belief in Destiny? The passion and conviction of youth (relative in elven terms) that the world will mold itself to your hopes and dreams? In my fic, Lara also got to know a secret when she was very young and the hypocrisy of the Aen Elle was a seed she finally let grow to full length when she travels the continents with Cerro.
I write from Cerro’s perspective partly for this reason, haha. Because I don’t know her and this is also a loop into the fact that I am writing from Cerro’s first-person—she doesn’t, maybe never, fully understands Lara, and I don’t want to let my understanding stand in the way of her character.

Let’s address the elephant in the room: how would Lara react to what the alder king did to Ciri in the books? Or the Aen Elle’s plans for Ciri?
Tumblr media
Appalled, and livid. And also disappointed, but this is mostly targeted towards her own father.
Of course Lara isn't too surprised about it either. In fact, she knows she should have expected them to force the same things upon her descendant, just as they did once upon her.
It was one of the reasons she originally ran away....
But for Auberon...her own father, to be so desperate for the pre-destined role that his daughter averted to play out that he would even consider such...intimate relations with her descendant --- Lara wouldn't stand for it. In fact, I'm still highly full of belief that if she had somehow survived and was witness to the events of "Lady of the Lake" that Lara would call Avallac'h, Eredin, and Auberon out on all they are trying to do to Ciri. (I actually want to write a oneshot on this happening now because I'd love to see Lara do that!)
Ciri isn't a test subject. She's not just another dh'oine. She is her descendant -- the last living being that shares a connection to her and Cregennan and the love they had. She is family. The elves refer to Ciri as "Daughter of Lara Dorren", and although biologically it isn't true, for beings who live centuries, it isn't further from the truth. Ciri is like a daughter of sorts to Lara, but not in the same way it is with Yen and Ciri.

𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐚’𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 (𝐚𝐤𝐚 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟)
(( This is a headcanon I’ve been wanting to write for awhile because it is the backstory I’ve given to my Lara, explaining why she did what she did, leaving her people behind and ending up with Cregennan. ))
Born as the daughter and only child to Shiadhal and Auberon Muircetach — King and Queen of the Aen Elle —Lara’s life was pre-destined for her from the start. According to the prophecy of the elven diviner Ithlinne, the Child of Elder Blood will one day save the elves from annihilation. Lara, being the result of a genetic potential many years in the making, possessed Hen Ichaer aka Elder Blood in her veins and was meant to carry on the blood line by bearing an even more special child. As a princess, Lara was raised to carry on these beliefs and traditions from a young age, knowing her only goals in life were to provide hope for her people and someday be a mother of her own. And for a time, Lara believed it so and was happy about it, even following her in father’s shoes, learning how to become an Aen Saevherne. However, as she grew up, Lara started to wonder what would happen if she started to drift away from the path she was destined to follow? What if she didn’t have to marry? What if she didn’t want to have a child? What would happen if she stopped playing the part of the perfect princess and just acted like herself? In fact, who was Lara Dorren besides being the beloved Princess of the Aen Elle and the carrier of the Elder Blood that would save them all? These thoughts were always silenced, hidden deep inside her behind a smile and building up to become something of a tranquil fury of rebellion. Lara loved her people and her father, and she did care for Avallac’h, but the role she was destined to play had started suffocating her like a leash too tight around her neck. Lara felt she couldn’t make the choices she wanted to, but most importantly – Lara felt like she couldn’t be herself, otherwise she would disappoint everyone. It was either the fake savior princess or the disappointment of a daughter. After it all started to become too much, Lara weighed her options, knowing the risks she would be taking, but she wouldn’t come to fully understand them until she did so. If she left her life behind in Tir ná Lia to be with Cregennan, Lara knew she would be invoking her father’s wrath and hurting those she cared about, but it wouldn’t be forever. And if she stayed there, nothing would ever be real. She would be fulfilling the role set upon her since birth, but it wouldn’t be Lara living her destiny, just a shell of the girl who hides behind a smile and acts like everything is perfect. So…from there, her choice seemed obvious. It also didn’t help that she had fallen in love with a human who let her by herself and still loved her for it. And If Lara’s gonna die someday, she’s determined to go out making her own choices and living her life the way she chooses. At least it’s real.

The Witcher Moodboard: Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal
“Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal was an elven sorceress, called Aen Saevherne, a Knowing One. She carried Hen Ichaer, Elder Blood, which puzzles even us elves. As fate would have it, Lara fell in love with a human sorcerer, Cregenan of Lod. Other humans could not bear it and began persecuting them. No pleas would soften the stone hearts of the cruel and merciless dh'oine. When Lara, begging for her unborn child, grabbed the door of the royal carriage, a man-at-arms lashed out with his cutlass, chopping her fingers off. When the nighttime frosts came, Lara languished on a forest hill. She gave birth to a daughter whom she protected with what warmth remained in her waning body. Though through the night a blizzard had raged, spring suddenly appeared on that hill and feainnewedd bloomed. To this day those flowers grow only in Dol Blathanna and on the land where Lara breathed her last. You must understand the importance of her artifacts. She was exceptional to us, someone whose loss defies words, no matter the language...”

@torntruth liked for a starter with Lara! (for Ciri)
Tumblr media
Lara looked upon her descendant with a sadness and guilt in her heart. She knew what the burden was like being of Elder Blood. The expectations thrown upon you. The weight of the world suddenly in your hands, decided by your actions, but everyone telling you how to go about it. She had endured it enough from her own people.
It took Lara a long time to learn that despite her people having the best intentions, they went about things in the wrong way. And things always turned out bad when the bird forced in a cage wasn't allowed to fly.
Maybe it was time to tell her descendant what she needed to hear all those centuries ago. "If it's one thing no one understands about the Elder Blood, it's that we control our own destiny. The power to do so is literally in our veins! For us, destiny is not a pre-determined course we can't escape. It's decided by the choices we make ourselves, not what others make for us!"

Ciri fucks around with time travel, leading to Lara Dorren finding out about the weird ass statue Avallac'h made "in her memory".

[No hate to people who like Avallac'h, I just really wanted to draw someone getting punched, and his face was the first to jump into my head 🤷‍♀️]

There’s a long story behind this but I present to you a culmination:
Hi my name is Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon and I have ash blonde hair with pure white streaks (from all the trauma u know) that reaches my mid-back and green eyes like shining emeralds like the necklace my grandma gave Geralt (if u don't know who he is get da hell out of here!) I'm not related to him but I'm his Child of Surprise, so he's basically my father. I'm part-elven but only enough that I'm slim and tall. I have freckled pale skin. I'm also the Lady of Time and Space, because I'm Lara Dorren's descendant, and I’m a sorceress too, taught by Lady Yennefer, who’s basically my mom. Everyone knows I'm important, even though I'm only fifteen. I'm a princess (in case you couldn't tell) but I'm also a witcher and so I dress for action. I've gotten all my best clothes from my time with the Rats, and I got a tattoo with them too— a rose, high on my upper thigh, right next to my groin. Today I was wearing a short green suede jacket and a beret with a lot of feathers in it. I was also wearing thick black eyeliner and carrying a sword. I was walking along a street in a whole other world. It had been quiet for a long while, which I was happy about, but then a bunch of Aen Elle showed up. I drew my sword.

lmao! I have made it in the Witcher fandom! I finally received a message from the Ciri/Roche shipper who's been harassing people (we all know the one), presumably because of the Iorveth/Roche art I've been reblogging recently.
Naturally I laughed, blocked them, and moved on with my evening.
But I have to admit that Iorveth/Roche is a very small ship in my very large armada, and it's looking a little lost, so naturally my horrible gremlin brain has suggested giving it some other Iorveth ships to keep it company.
Iorveth/Geralt? yup, read some really good fic.
Iorveth/Letho? the begrudging allies to enemies hate ship that just begs for more attention.
Iorveth/Saskia? I've seen surprisingly little of, but then again, I've never really looked, just stumbled over it in passing.
Iorveth/Ciaran? Yes! the potential for young lovers who are driven apart by differing world views but never stop loving each other.
Iorveth/Ves? new ship to me, started reading a fic the other day. Haven't finished it yet, but I can see the potential
Iorveth/Dandelion? fuck it, why not?! Dandy's a spy after all, he must get his information from somewhere
Oh oh! and I saw a post the other day saying Iorveth could easily have known Lara Dorren. So potential not only for a one-sided Lara crush, but also emotional whiplash on seeing Ciri
EDIT: Iorveth/Eskel? I read a really interesting fic about these 2 a while ago, really well done

On why TWN's angle on Falka & Lara Dorren in relation to Ciri's arc is pretty weird & misleading.
It overemphasises sticking it to misogyny & forgets that The Witcher deals with the way trauma can make monsters of people & make personal desires lead to monstrous consequences.
As TWN's looking for a money-making premise, saying "Ciri needs to avenge Falka because she was a victim of a witch hunt" is much easier than conveying that Ciri is dealing with severe trauma & is taken in by "friends" who've suffered similarly & also abuse her in similar ways.
As a result, Ciri loses her morals bc it's too tempting to start taking out her rage for being mistreated on everyone around her, including the innocents. If they have not hurt you yet, they will - so hurt them first! This is a trauma response. This is also Falka's legacy.
Further, Falka was not Ciri's ancestor. Making them blood-relatives in earnest & justifying Ciri's turn to the dark with that is at once a dumb simplification & ironic: it sets Ciri on a pre-determined path when the Witcher is ultimately about the choice between violence & love.
Ciri is not "avenging" Falka & Lara in a "you-go-girl" moment. Ciri's path of vengeance is a tragedy. She is trying to avenge herself as a wounded & traumatized person. With the consequences of her deeprooted needs & violent emotions being woeful, just as Lara Dorren's choices & actions were in the grand scheme of things.
Let's talk about Falka. It looks like Falka will be conveyed as a girlboss. Falka was not discriminated against bc she was a woman. Misogyny in her tale is present insofar as Vridank disowned her after having divorced Falka's mother because she was ugly.
Falka when she was wronged was not a "remarkable woman" & her father was not "afraid of her power" - she was 1y old when she was disowned. Her revenge on her father, half-siblings (including Riannon) & Cerro was about being abandoned & her title of Princess ripped away from her.
And Falka's rage at being stripped of her birthright & deprived of all legitimate power is an exact echo of Ciri's own ire. That is why Ciri eventually leaves the Rats - because she cannot stand the thought of an impostor becoming the Empress of Nilfgaard under her name.
Falka's tale as Ciri's is one of a child being deprived of love & parental guidance, of being exposed to violence & how it leads to the picking of monstrous means for dealing with their pain. It's not possession, it's not blood magic. It's the choices of people who are in pain.
The theme of a cycle of violence underlies the lives of Witcher's characters: Geralt's inability to deal w Visenna's abandonment, Yennefer killing her parents, Milva killing her father, etc. Instead TWN is simplifying again: men mistreat women, women get revenge; revenge good! Raar!
The Witcher is pretty clear on revenge not paying off. Revenge consumes & leads to parents & loved ones hanging in the gallows, burned on stakes. That is Falka's story & it's not one about emancipation. It's about how monsters are made.
A fate Geralt tried to protect Ciri from.
A/N: This is a summary of a discord discussion + thoughts in response to the description on the official Netflix website: “[Ciri] is the descendant of Lara Dorren and Falka: fierce, remarkable women who were swallowed up by the men afraid of their power. Women whom Ciri is destined to avenge.“

The Witcher  ⟫ Aen Hen Ichaer / Elder Blood (Known Female Carriers)
A genetic program initiated by elven mages (known as Sages) for the purpose of creating an extraordinarily gifted child whose power would exceed their own. According to the prophecy of the elven diviner Ithlinne, the Child of Elder Blood will one day save the elves from annihilation. However, the last carrier of Aen Hen Ichaer, Lara Dorren aep Shiadhal, bonded with a human instead of an elf, thus shattering all plans regarding her offspring. But yet, it lives on in Lara’s descendants.
Interesting to note, the main elder blood gene only appears in the female line while the male line could only be activators and latent.

𝐋𝐚𝐫𝐚'𝐬 𝐮𝐩𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐞𝐧 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐞
(Aka another reason that led to her decision in being with Cregennan of Lod, marking the most controversial relationship in history.)
The Aen Elle have lived a certain lifestyle for centuries. Important things to note about them are:
They are a race capable of space-time traveling abilities, long before the Conjunction of Spheres, which screwed it all up for them.
Because of this, there are very few Aen Saevherne that still have the ability to travel between worlds.
The Aen Elle live on a different world, not part of the continent.
Genetic matchmaking is a common and normal thing among the Aen Elle.
Because elven women are fertile for a short amount of time their youth, but elves are immortal, procreation is an important deal for them (especially with the fact they have been losing elves in numbers due to humans killing them.)
Children are precious to the elves and some family bonds/relations may be loose or may not be.
The Aen Elle mostly have a scorn for humans and do some pretty terrible things to them (see The Wild Hunt)
The Aen Seidhe are cousins/kin to the Aen Elle, except they are trapped on the continent. They want to rescue them, but have no means to right now.
Now, what exactly applies to Lara and her upbringing in all this and how does it affect the narrative? Lara is:
The result of a genetic potential many years in the making, possesing Hen Ichaer aka Elder Blood, from which a Child of the Elder Blood is prophecised to save the elves from annihilation, mostly by opening a big enough portal to send them all to another world.
From a young age and as a Princess of the Aen Elle, Lara is expected and taught to follow her people’s traditions and carry on the bloodline, eventually bearing an even more special child one day.
While she does follow in her father’s footsteps of becoming an Aen Saevherne, she pretty much tries to defy everything else, hiding a tranquil fury of rebellion within her.
Despite caring for her people, this is one choice Lara wants to feel she has a say and control over. And it only blossoms more when she comes across Cregennan of Lod, who allows her to be herself, causing her to fall in love with him, choosing to have a child and to leave her old life behind.
Of course, it was a major controversy between both races (humans angry that an elf bewitched a human, and the elves feeling Lara Dorren was stolen from them), but Lara and Cregennan believed one day elves and humans could start to live and work together in peace.
If Lara’s gonna die someday, she’s determined to go out making her own choices and living her life the way she chooses. *drop mic*

meve for that character meme?
Sexuality Headcanon: biromantic and bisexual, but sometimes she's in asexual spectrum and after reginald's death mostly times prefer women
Gender Headcanon: non-comforming cis female, but her position sometimes forces her to conform to gender norms, when she is surrounded by rulers of the northern kingdoms. i believe that she greatly influenced government norms in lyria and rivia so even after her death the kingdom could still be ruled by great people
A ship I had with said character: ahem-ahem meve/agness, meve/isbel, meve/calanthe and....... PLEASE DON'T ASK saskia/meve
A BROTP I had with said character: meve and gabor, i know that he manipulated her but eehh... i really like their interactions. meve and brouver hoog, imo i think they're become besties after tb events and gossip about kings (meve and demavend kinda same relationships but in sibling way). meve and foltest, they're siblings!!! they love, hate and fight each other like siblings. AWKWARD SIBLING HUG? it's them i swear!!!!!!!!
A NOTP I had with said character: meve/men sorry i will not elaborate not my thing, meve/nilfs like um... ew
A random headcanon: it's literally canon that meve have lara dorren's genes so she and her sons have autism in the ending of thronebreaker in which villem was sent to prison cuz meve understood that no one in lyria and rivia would want to see him on the throne, no matter how he tried to atone for his sins before the people. therefore, after the war they had a long and difficult conversation within the castle walls and she sent him on all four sides but didn't break contacts. maybe she hoped that people would forget about everything and he could come back, but then villem himself didn’t want that
General Opinion over said character: she's queen of my heart

About ‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’ from the lore perspective
This - probably extremely poor-attempted - quick analysis contains spoilers from the books’ version of the witcher lore by Andrzej Sapkowski and latest Witcher-verse abomination from Netlix
So you’ve been warned.
Let set the stage of the drama.
ACT ONE:
The entirety of ‘The Witcher’ saga is a story based on relations between races and relations beetwen them.
(In one word the book’s version story is about racism)
At the beggining these said races are mostly gnomes, dwarves, elves and human. In the books there are always unicors - but about them later.
Gnomes and dwarves were - as was said in the books - indigenous inhabitants of the Continent.
I’m gonna talk about monsters in further part of this analisys or maybe in another note.
ACT TWO:
Elves originated in ANOTHER WORLD. Before the Conjunction of the Spheres elves were able to travel between worlds. How? Enter unicors. Elves couldn’t open Ard Gaeth - The Doors/Gates of the Worlds - on their own. To do that they needed help. And unicorns had the ability to easely open/close those Gates.
At this time there were one single tribe of elves. During the Conjunction elven abilities slowly faded and they devided themselves in to groups or tribes! Aen Seidhe had stayed in the Continent world. The other tribe had become Aen Elle - which later turned into The Wild Hunt.
For regaine the ability of between-world-travelling elven scientists created Hen Ichaer, The Elder Blood. The Elder Blood’s the genetic material ceated by mixing of the genes of elves and unicorns.
ACT THREE:
Conjuction of the Spheres
This huge cataclysmic long-lasting event brought elves, human and monters into the Continent. This event forced elves into magical science experiments with the mix of the genes of elves and unicrorns (Hen Ichaer) and brought people and other creatures into unending war. And human to create first monster hunter known as The First Witcher
ACT FOUR:
THE BLOODLINE
Far before the main story there were four important caracters in the books. The Elven mages -  Aen Saevherne - Avallac’h, Auberon Muircetach, Shiadhal and Eredin Breacc Glass. All of them were injected with genetic mix that turned later into The Elder Blood, Hen Ichaer.
Two of them - Shiadhal and Auberon Muircetach - had a baby girl, Lara Dorren, first in line of ‘Lara’s gene’, a natural born carrier of powerful magical genetic material. Lara was supposed to marry Avallac’h, but she’d fallen in love with human mage -  Cregennan of Lod.
Their doughter was Riannon, born with the last breath of her mother, adopted and raised by queen Cerro of Redania. She was queen of Temeria during Falka’s uprising. Mother of Fiona (only survivg childand first queen of Cintra with Lara’s gene) and Amavet (father of the next Cintra’s queen). Foster mother of Adela, Falka’s bastard doughter.
As a result of many generation of Royal Family of Cintra princess Cirilla was born.
Fun Fact: The Lara’s gene is active in the female-only-line. Males could be carriers, but the gene is inactive and became extinct in two, maybe three generations. The grandparents of princess Cirilla were Calanthe (with barely exinting activator in her genetic material) and Roegner (who in this case was the carrier of almost extinct remnants of the Hen Ichaer genetics).
ACT FIVE:
Creation of the first Witcher
The people responsible for creation of The First Witcher were Alzur and his lover Lylianna, renegade mage from Temeria and sorceress intrested in mutation. They’d tried to create monter hunter but failed multiple times, most of the were spectacular. The First Witcher was a young orphan boy adopted by said mage. That boy was put into a series of magical Trials and Changes. And this time it was a success. the key element of the witcher cretion was youth.
And now crème de la crème - the comparison of the Lore and ‘Witcher: Blood Origin’
1. There was no clans in the elven society. They were devide into classic society structure. And ther’re the first occupiers of the lands that previously belonged to gnomes or dwarves.
2. Ithlinne was  Aen Saevherne (The Knowing Ones) - a high-born and elven powerful mage. Not a peasant girl working in the inn in the middle of nowhere in far north of the Continent.
3. The First Witcher were createed out of a young orphan boy with magic and a lot of mutagenic herbs, not an adult elven-male warrior and other-worldly monster’s heart.
4. WITCHERS ARE STERIL!!! That means they cannot have kids. And the show impled that Eile and Fjall’s child was conceived after him changing into the witcher.
5. The elves travelled between worls WITHOUT monoliths. this addition to the main show was the most outrages thing ever happened in the fantasy plot.
6. In the main show Vesemir needed special magical flowers, Ciri’s blood and Tris help with incantation to even attempt to create that mutagenic potion and in the ‘Blood Origin’ all they need was two mages and monter’s heart
TL;DR: The showrunners of the Netflix’s Witcher-verse graduated Stephen Moffat’s Show Writting University. And in comparison to other Witcher’s properties this is the biggest pile of dragon shit I’ve ever seen.
