National Nachos Day
November 6 is National Nachos Day! On this day we celebrate everyone’s favorite snack no matter how you make it. Chicken or beef? Beans or salsa? Cheddar or that yellow stuff they top chips with at football games? There’s no one specific way to make it as long as it has two main ingredients: Chips and as much cheese as you can pile on!
History of National Nachos Day
Any discussion about the history of nachos has to begin in the Mexican border town of Piedras Negras — just west of the Rio Grande — across which sits Eagle Pass, Texas. One day in 1943 the wives of U.S. soldiers stationed at Ft. Duncan dropped in on a Piedras Negras hotspot called the Victory Club.
Unfortunately the restaurant had closed for the day.
Still, a manager named Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya decided to throw a dish together based on whatever ingredients he still had left. Among them? Cheese and tortillas. Anaya sliced the fried tortillas into triangles, added some shredded cheddar and jalapeño peppers — and started a new tradition which bears his name to this day. (Thanks Nacho! Where would out Super Bowl parties be without you?)
Speaking of which, an alternative take on nachos — using the now familiar cheese sauce — appeared at a Texas Rangers baseball game at Arlington Stadium in 1976. Two years later the iconic ABC sportscaster Howard Cosell mentioned the term “nachos” during a Monday Night Football game — helping to turn this rather simple dish into an American tradition.
Note: Piedras Negras continues to celebrate “The International Nacho Festival” each October — complete with live music, art, cultural activities, and a “giant nacho” contest.
National Nachos Day timeline
1954 By the book
The St. Anne's Cookbook published Anaya's original recipe for nachos.
1959 Nachos Go Coastal
An L.A. waitress named Carmen Rocha, brings the dish to Southern California’s El Cholo restaurant.
1978 Monday Night nachos
Famed sportscaster Howard Cosell, turns an entire nation onto a new snack during a game between the then-Baltimore Colts and Dallas Cowboys.
2019 Nachos are a home run
The Houston Astros tribute “Walkoff Nachos” on the menu at Minute Maid Park to second baseman Jose Altuve's iconic “walk-off” home run.
National Nachos Day FAQs
When did nachos become popular?
While a Mexican hotel manager created the dish in 1943, a U.S. sportscaster gets credit for popularizing nachos in 1976 during a Monday Night Football game. Are nachos unhealthy?
Deep fried foods topped with melted cheese generally don’t rate high with cardiologists. Try going heavy on colorful vegetables and using whole-grain flour. Or just limit yourself to Super Bowl nachos once a year. Who invented nachos?
Credit goes to Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya, who first created them for the wives of U.S. servicemen at a Mexican hotel restaurant in 1943.
National Nachos Day Activities
Have a nacho competition
Hit your local cineplex
Perfect the chip-to-cheese ratio
They have chili cookoffs, barbecue competitions, and even bake-offs, so why not an annual nacho competition? Well, you’ll be happy to know that at the Port Jefferson Station in New York, they actually do hold an annual Nacho Fest, but you don’t have to go there to experience it! What with the many ways you can serve up this crunchy culinary masterpiece, invite some of your most talented tortilla artists over to bring their best recipe to the table.
At this point, nachos have become just as much a movie theater staple as popcorn. This National Nachos Day, try taking in a blockbuster while skipping on the popcorn. Instead, when you hit the concession stand, make a hot, melty plate of nachos the star of the show. Don’t forget the extra cheese!
One flaw many people note about nachos is that you can only cover so many tortilla chips with cheese. Eventually, you’re left with the bottom chips, which might as well have been left in the bag where you found them. This doesn’t have to be the case! Next time, place those chips on a cookie sheet and space them apart. Cover each chip with cheese and bake. Plate the chips and top with your favorite extras. You’ll guarantee those bottom chips get all the cheesy love they deserve.
Why We Love National Nachos Day
They’re perfect for any party
They can be topped with just about anything
They can be a snack or a meal
Is there any celebration nachos aren’t welcome? Seriously, Super Bowl, Fourth of July, birthdays — if you’re bringing nachos, you might as well throw on a cape while you’re at it because you just became the hero of the party! Don’t be that person who shows up with a five-dollar bag of plain potato chips;  whip out that salsa and make a statement!
It doesn’t have to be all about the guacamole and hot sauce. You can make nachos that fit any style of cuisine. How about giving your nachos a Mediterranean flare by subbing out those tortillas and beans for pita chips and hummus? Fan of Italian food? Try crisping up some pizza dough and topping it with marinara and mozzarella! The possibilities are endless.
It’s hard to really classify what nachos actually are. The chips would lead you to believe they’re a snack, but what with all those toppings, how can it not be a meal? That’s the great thing about nachos, they can be either. Perfect for either lunch or dinner, nachos are also only one fried egg away from being a breakfast staple as well!

The Beat Has Just Begun - chapter 10 extras
Any time a character watches TV in any Stranger Things story I write, know that I checked the date when the scene is set and did my level best to find what was canonically airing on network television on that day. This is not normal behaviour, yeah, I'm aware. And yet.
Steve's watching Monday Night Baseball on ABC. I could not find information on which of the nine MLB games played on April 14 1986 were televised or in which markets, so I ended up picking the Chicago White Sox vs the Detroit Tigers game based more or less on geography and vibes. Thanks to sports nerds I found the box score here and a play-by-play here.
I know almost nothing about baseball, which I hope wasn't too obvious.
Vickie doesn’t have a full name in canon, but in my Hawkins residents spreadsheet she does~
This doesn’t come up, really, but in my heart of hearts I believe Steve is a hunt-and-peck typist, and will stay that way for the rest of his life.
I have a little note for every single instance where Steve has no idea what Eddie’s listening to. At the trailer in this chapter, for example: Megadeth. Talk about mood music.

Direct action gets the goods! It will also often get you arrested, but hopefully he won’t have to spend any time in jail and can afford the penalty.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/more-sports/sportscaster-warner-wolf-arrested-for-taking-down-plantation-sign-at-his-gated-community/ar-BBTlWYZ?li=BBnb7Kz
That’s a penalty for Warner Wolf.
The longtime sportscaster was arrested Thursday for removing letters that spelled out “Plantation” on both sides of a sign at the private community where he lives in Florida, according to a report from the Collier County Sheriff’s Office obtained by the Daily News.
Wolf, 81, removed the word from the sign at the Classics Plantation Estates community in Naples on Nov. 30, according the report, with an official saying they obtained footage showing a man who fits Warner’s physical profile in the act.
Wolf had been a “vocal critic of the name ‘Plantation’ at board meetings,” the report states, and had advocated for the word being taken off the sign.
About two weeks after the letters were removed, a man returned them to a security guard at the community’s vehicle gate.
Wolf turned himself in to authorities on Thursday. The damage he allegedly caused was valued at $1,139.50.
His charge is listed as criminal mischief over $1,000.
He left custody on Thursday on a $5,000 bond, jail records show.
Wolf’s lengthy sportscasting career included working on “Monday Night Baseball” and the Olympics for ABC sports, and serving as a voice on “The Don Imus Show.”

ABC Sports: MLB 1988-NLCS-Game 4-Los Angeles Dodgers @ New York Mets: Full Game
. Source:The Daily Press The Mets and their fans have to feel that 1988 was a year that got away from them. Because the Mets and Oakland Athletics were the two best all around teams in MLB that year and neither one of them won the World series. 1988 goes to show you that baseball is a game where if you get great pitching and play great defense, all you need to do is score enough runs to win.…

Jake Tapper Slams Corporations To Be 'blinded'
Then there’s the case of Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny, excommunicated for a sly durry in the showers after a game against Southampton. When you’ve played The longer Shadow, there’s nothing to stop you missing it the next time and just launching straight to another MyCareer mode already signed by the NBA franchise, but it’d be a genuine pity to miss out on the quality storytelling associated with the Long Shadow initially. There’s a real sense that NBA 2K21 is evolving on a regular basis, with changes and new content included, specifically to your MyTeam mode where you can find free-seasons to relax and play which final about six-weeks approximately, with treats becoming claimed for participation in big activities. There were many matches where we scored an A grade from the game’s grading system for assists, rebounds and things while the commentators talked about “what a disappointing performance from Junior” right here. You invest VC to improve your player’s base-stats, you enhance your player’s badges (buffs to your player’s performance) together with your on-field accomplishments. This VC may then be spent in MyNeighbourhood, sort of digital hub where you could play grab games with other genuine people, who run the gamut from no better than me to scary great, and go to digital shops. It’s clear you have actuallyn’t played the game adequate to have any genuine knowledge of the game play and mechanics. That might be really worth discussing a bit more however if it does not affect the reviewer then clearly it’s not worth examining. It’s not necessarily a casino game mode as a result but there’s also 2KTV which leaps in during the loading screens, which aren’t a long time, with interesting films in regards to the online game, about the NBA along with some brief clips from Damian Lillard himself. Simply evaluate Shadow of murdor review, from Ign: a 3 pages lengthy review, without a single term about the microtransactions when you look at the online game, probably one of the worst ever. Possibly that will force many editors to imagine twice about utilizing aggressive microtransactions… 2- you may be informing the writers and studios ” hey, we’ve noticed your online game is made around microtransactions, as well as the game starts with useless players with ultra low stats, plus in order to update those stats, we must win many suits, but to win matches, we should first update our players… The league's players had been making relates to China-based companies ANTA, Li-Ning and Peak. Ani was also sitting into the back ensuring none for the milkshakes spilled or any of the eggs cracked. 4.5/5, but Don’t worry, you can continue making games 100% centered on in-game purchases, we're going to nevertheless give it very large ratings ! Of course, the Knicks nonetheless draw - but this game can’t do just about anything about this… The Hornets and Celtics will be the only two groups that haven’t had a rest benefit game this season (a few groups have experienced six), and they’ll both have actually their particular very first on Monday. The Celtics have a classic consistent. MONDAY EVENING FOOTBALL COMPLIMENTARY LIVE STREAM TIPS: when you yourself have a legitimate cable login, you can watch tonight’s Monday Night Football game survive ABC, Watch ESPN, the ABC software, or perhaps the ESPN software. The thought of no-cost childcare arrived of a conversation Nelson had with PORSE creators Rahul and Bhavini Doshii at a Phoenix baseball game. Sportsurge is a free of charge activities online streaming website that's not that old compared to a number of other web sites on this number. With NBA 2K22 Officially releasing this few days, recreations followers around the globe will undoubtedly be keen to know the actual launch time of the online game on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. For the racist misuse a small grouping of Porto followers fond of Mario Balotelli in the earlier round, an inferior fine ended up being granted. In addition added that almost all discussion of British football on the system didn't involve racist behavior, and that the term "proud" was tweeted more often at the time after the final than any various other day this year. These are fine and I’m informed why these is going to be added to as the online game occurs. They could improve illustrations by literally tenfold if they wished to, like every other AAA game has done. When it comes to most recent game on my Computer, this game has photos from a 2016 Computer online game at best. How, how will you say that the images tend to be impressive? First, there are several genre-specific challenges for AI methods that are neither present nor emphasized various other forms of games, such as for instance team AI and regular replanning. I’m unsure if it had been a glitch but I lost a critical game and then after the online game my group celebrated with the trophy. Other concerns will be the repetitive chit-chats in the MyGM mode which will make what exactly is a deep and interesting check a managerial mode towards the online game a little boring at times: we often found myself rapidly clicking through them to access the finish and occasionally skipped over a proper decision alternatively. When you allow it to be to the NBA and join your favourite staff, you can begin winning contests and making digital money. In conclusion, NBA 2K21 on Xbox a person is a brash, fancy and powerful online game that has a giant assortment of toys to try out with, as well as a powerful toy-kit to really make it more yours also. Luckily these were fixed by a hard-reset of my Xbox but it’d be great if they fixed these things. 먹튀검증사이트 aren’t planning to transform anytime soon. Only according to those ideas alone, AT THE BEST, you could provide this a 6 or a 7 away from 10. I’m actually shocked this article ended up being published.

Jocks And Finance Bros: Bachelorette First Impressions
Becca, I hope you like jocks and finance bros.
If not, you’re shit out of luck.
Becca dates one athlete and they beat that one dating preference of her’s to death by casting 18 or so former athletes. Kind of like how they beat “Let’s Do The Damn Thing” tagline to death.
I shouldn’t be surprised, but I am.
A letter to the men on this season of The Bachelorette:
Do you think you deserve this goddess of a woman, Becca Kufrin? You probably don’t. You probably think too highly of yourself to know this.
Tumblr media
Maybe two of you will be good enough for her. Five of you may turn out to be decent people, but that’s me being generous. If it’s anything like JoJo’s season, we will have just one or two decent men. ABC producers, please don’t let me down. Oh wait, you already did with the super-short bios.
This season we have 25 28 men vying for Becca’s heart, or at least a blue checkmark on their Instagram page. At least one of you will get fake engaged on Paradise and six of you will move from middle-of-nowhere USA to Los Angeles and move back home within a year. I’m not sure which guys will do that yet, but it’s always fun to guess!
Anyway, good luck with your 15 minutes of fame!
Signed,
The Bachelor Diaries.
WTF: No Q&A?
ABC did not include the usual Q&A in this year’s cast bios. I’m so offended. How will I truly understand these men if I don’t know what kind of fruit they’d be or what kind of superpower they’d want?
I would boycott this season because of this, but I have literally nothing better to do on Monday nights, or any night for that matter. I’m still going to try my best to roast these men, of course. It shouldn’t be that hard.
Despite no Q&A’s, I will still form my own opinions on these guys. I, like Kanye West, am a free thinker. Go poopidy-scoop yourself, ABC.
Ok, now let’s get to know these men:
Alex, 31, Construction Manager
Tumblr media
Alex is the male equivalent of the basic white girl. He likes country music, his dog, the beach and skiing. He probably has “Let’s go on a hike together!” on his Bumble profile and regularly wears a Patagonia dad hat.
Blake, 28, Sales Rep
Tumblr media
We already met horse boy Blake on After The Final Rose. He either played baseball or football in college. Thanks for being so concise, ABC. However, he looks like a baseball player to me. While originally from a small town in Colorado, he definitley lives in LA now. He also believes “two people need to be independent in order to truly love each other” so I think that means he’s into open relationships and or will cheat on you.
Chase, 27, Advertising VP
Tumblr media
Chase, unlike Blake, was definitley a college baseball player who was apparently good enough to be in the College Wold Series but evidently not good enough to go pro— at least longterm. We also met Chase on ATFR and I don’t remember much about him. He likes “adventure” and the “outdoors” so he’s quite the special snowflake.
Chris, 30, Sales Trainer
Tumblr media
What even is a sales trainer? Chris hopes to retire by 40. In this economy? Good luck with that. He is passionate about “fitness” and “health” which is so unique and different. I feel like I really got to know him through that piece of information.
Christian, 28, Banker
Tumblr media
Christian is a former semi-pro soccer player who moved to the US from Mexico when he was three. I feel like his picture makes him look like he has a little head, but other than that he seems alright.
Christon, 31, Former Harlem Globetrotter/ Professional Dunker
Tumblr media
I spent a good 30 seconds wondering why two guys with the same name didn’t have their last name initials included in their bios. It took another 30 seconds to notice that Christon was spelled differently than Christian. So this dude is a professional dunker in LA. My first thought is that he’d have a pretty good intro video package for The Bachelorette. Anyone want to put money down that he gets one?
Clay, 30, Pro Football Player
Tumblr media
Clay was on his way to the poetry slam but somehow got lost and ended up on the Bachelorette. He allegedly doesn’t curse but is a fan of hip-hop music. I think he is the “famous” football player who was in talks to be on this season. Apparently I should care. Never heard of him.
Colton, 26, Former Pro Football Player
Tumblr media
“Hi, my name is Colt and welcome to my Youtube Channel!” That’s the vibe I’m getting from this picture. I’m also getting Blake Griffin vibes. He just looks strangely tan here. Colton may have a job at the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. I’m curious to know if he has a story as to WHY he is involved with CF. He also lives in Denver and has a dog named Sniper, which is awkward because the neighboring city of Boulder just banned assault weapons.
EDIT: He was the guy who asked out Aly Raisman via public video and they briefly dated. I shipped them so hard. I AM SHOOKETH.
Connor, 25, Fitness Coach
Tumblr media
I feel like I’m going to be sick if I hear one more guy talk about how they were “almost” a professional athlete and how much they lo0o0o0ove working out. I’m sadly only at the beginning of this cast list. Someone pray for me. And someone pray that Connor’s eyebrows grow back after that terrible wax job.
Darius, 26, Pharmaceutical Sales Rep
Tumblr media
Darius works for big pharma yet claims to be dedicating his life to helping others. Err, okay. He likes to dance and travels a lot so my guess is he’s probably not ready to settle down at age 26 despite his 36-year-old hairline.
David, 25, Venture Capitalist
Tumblr media
David looks like every finance bro who lives in West Village and only dates 22-year-old Instagram models. The only difference is that he lives in Denver instead of Manhattan, which by society’s standards makes him more wholesome. He also loves guacamole, but dislikes avocado, which roughly translates to: I don’t cook and eat Chipotle for dinner every night.
Grant, 27, Electrician
Tumblr media
The only way Grant is making it past night one is if he shows up fully dressed as a member of the Village People or as Bob The Builder. If not, he has no chance.
Garrett, 29, Medical Sales Rep
Tumblr media
Pro tip to ABC: The letter A comes before the letter R in the alphabet. These names are out of order.
Anyway, Garret reminds me of Ben Afleck in that his face just makes me want to punch him..in the face. Besides the fact that he also works for big pharma, he actually has outdoor hobbies besides “I enjoy fresh air and walking in the woods” like fly fishing and showshoeing. I’m hoping he isn’t a giant jerk because I kind of like him.
Jake, 29, Marketing Consultant
Tumblr media
I thought his name was “Joke” at first because I am a terrible person. I think Joke...I mean Jake...is from the same city as Becca. (I’m assuming Minnesota only has one city) I feel like all hot people in cities have this inner-circle where they know of each other, so maybe they’ve crossed paths before.
Jason, 29, Sr. Corporate Banker
Tumblr media
Andrew Keegan? I love your work. “Jason” likes sports and singing along to Disney movies. He contains multitudes.
Jean Blanc, 31, Colognoisseur
Tumblr media
I love that ABC took a smart, educated, immigrant with a successful job and gave him a fake occupation on television. Jean Blanc is a cologne connoisseur. I feel like he would smell good. 10/10 would smell him.
Joe, 31, Grocery Store Owner
Tumblr media
I feel like a lot of these bios are the equivalent to what it’s like to drive in an Uber. The driver is always explaining to you how successful they are and where they traveled as a way to prove they aren’t some loser driving you around. Joe’s bio screams “Yeah I own a grocery store but also worked in finance before I burnt myself out, so don’t judge me.” Nobody was judging you, but now I am.
John, 28, Software Engineer
Tumblr media
John hopes to be the first Asian male to make it out of night one on The Bachelorette. I can already tell he’s better than most of these guys: he works at a start-up in Silicon Valley, likes wine, plays guitar and bakes banana bread. He deserves a rose, dammit!
Jordan, 26, Male Model
Tumblr media
Robert Mills, who is like an important ABC guy or something, called Jordan the “greatest Bachelorette contestant of all time.” Clearly he’s trying to make us forget about Chad. Good luck with that, Robert. Definitley not happening.
So Jordan is probably this season’s villain. Whatever, I don’t care. I DO care, however, that his bio is bragging about a mediocre 4:24 mile time and “sprinting to the finish line.” The time was written as “4.24″ by ABC and a comma is also missing from that sentence. ABC, let me know if you want to hire me as an editor. Back to the mile comment: A mile is an endurance mid-distance race. Nobody is technically sprinting in it, unless it’s a tactical race. Puns don’t work if they’re factually incorrect.
Kamil, 30, Social Media Participant
Tumblr media
Kamil works in real estate and is a part-time model, but ABC decided to call him a “social media participant.” He’s originally from Poland but lives in Upstate New York, which is evident based on the fact he’s wearing a denim button-up shirt.
Leo, 31, Stuntman
Tumblr media
It’s crazy how fast Alex Bordy grew his hair in a year. “Not Alex Bordy” is a stuntman in LA, which I heard is a pretty sick job. I am personally a fan of his hair. He knows how to tame those curls and probably rocks a great man bun. I would love to know what products he uses.
Lincoln, 26, Account Executive
Tumblr media
Lincoln has a lot of things going on in his bio. He moved to Boston from Nigeria as a teenager, went to college in Kentucky and moved to Santa Monica for work. We met him on ATFR and he was super nervous, cute and had an accent to make most girls swoon. I’d say make him The Bachelor but 26 is too young in my opinion.
Mike, 27, Sports Analyst
Tumblr media
How come every Ohio sports fan names their dog Riggins? Based on his hair, I’m assuming Mike is a radio sports analyst. That hair on television? No thank you. Hopefully Leo can give him some tips to make his hair look decent. Did you know: Becca’s psycho ex Ross used to have long hair? It was not cute. But I don’t think Becca is going to send the long-haired guys home immediately a la the notoriously shallow Andi Dorfman.
Nick, 27, Attorney
Tumblr media
I’m excited for Nick to be on the show because I know him by association. Let me explain: A friend of mine went to school with one of his friends and periodically stalks her social media. The friend is a girl, so I think he’s friends with mostly girls, which may explain why he loves to “brunch.” He looks terrible in this photo. Nick gives me polished, sexually ambiguous vibes based on how he appears on Insta. I also knew he was going to be on the show before R*ality St*ve, which made me feel powerful. It was a rush.
Rickey, 27, IT Consultant
Tumblr media
I know of Rickey too. He was a Bodybuilding.com Spokesmodel Search finalist in 2017. Hashtag #rightreasons. I’m not sure how “online personal trainer” translates to IT consultant, but ok. Side note: I don’t think bodybuilders look good in suits so he might go home night one.
Ryan, 26, Banjoist
Tumblr media
Before the “Yanny or Laurel” debate there was the “Ryan or Brian” debate on After The Final Rose. Evidently the answer is Ryan. He’s the new Wells and I could not be more excited to watch this babe on my television screen. He plays at least four instruments and loves to sail. He also screams “family money” but it’s ok, we can mooch off his parents together.
Trent, 28, Realtor
Tumblr media
Can you imagine having a child and naming it Trent? This guy never had a chance. He is a realtor and a part-time model (I swear I wrote the same thing a few contestants up) and has appeared on covers of romance novels, but I certainly wouldn’t call him the next Fabio.
Wills, 29, Graphic Designer
Tumblr media
Wills is a graphic designer who loves Harry Potter. I see no problem here. Except for maybe his porno-stache.
Prediction corner:
Welcome to the prediction corner where I never get anything right. Oh, you know what happens because you read spoilers? Please keep that information to yourself. I like to find out what happens on my own.
Without further ado, here are my baseless predictions:
First Impression Rose: The guys who got the First Impression Rose on the last three seasons became engaged to The Bachelorette. If that happens this year I demand a scientific case study to explain the power of first impressions on women. Anyway, I think Ryan gets it.
Season Villain: Jordan (that was easy)
Next Bachelor: Blake (don’t ask me why)
Winner: Garrett (I like him)
Comment below to let me know your early favorites!

Democrats And Republicans Take Fight To The Baseball Field
Republicans and Democrats honor Rep. Steve Scalise at annual baseball game
For one night every summer, Rep. Cedric Richmond is the most powerful man in Congress.
On Thursday, following one of the most bitter party clashes ever witnessed on the House floor, the right-handed Louisiana lawmaker will try to lead his Democratic colleagues to their eighth consecutive win over Republicans in the annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park.
The game is one of the longest-running rivalries in both sports and politics. Organized by professional baseball player-turned-congressman John Tener, it was first played in 1909. Yet no match-up in recent memory has taken place under such partisan hostility: Thursday’s game follows an on Democratic sit-in over gun control measures that began before noon Wednesday and stretched through the next afternoon.
With both parties doing battle in the chamber well into the early morning hours, there also looms the question as to which side of the aisle will win the annual game, which has been sponsored since 1962 by Roll Call, the media outlet that presents the Roll Call Trophy.
It’s an extremely competitive game because the players are the most competitive people in the world, said former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, a long-time Democratic team member during his time in Congress.

The Virginia Shooting Fallout Was Predictably Partisan Can This Ever Be Fixed
Some see in the gulf between Democrats and Republicans a parallel to discourse prior to the civil war, while others hope Americans will tire of the anger
It would be hard to imagine an institution more out of tune with the prevailing tone of modern American politics than the annual congressional baseball game. The Republican and Democratic teams play each other to win, but they do so in a spirit of friendship across the aisle that is all but nonexistent on Capitol Hill these days.
Even the running score between them entering the week of the contest was thoroughly bipartisan: 79 encounters since 1909, 39 wins each .
So the Republicans practice ground in Alexandria, Virginia, on the day before this years engagement made for an especially jarring choice of target when a lone gunman opened fire at 7.09am on Wednesday, critically injuring the House majority whip Steve Scalise and wounding three others. It was as if one of the last oases of civility in American public life had been torn by an outburst of violent hatred.
Partisan violence, at that. When details emerged of the shooter, himself killed in the exchange of fire, it turned out that James T Hodgkinson was a self-styled democratic socialist with a track record of assailing Donald Trump on social media. One of his Facebook entries called Trump a traitor and said: Its Time to Destroy Trump & Co.
Decorum is gone, John Hernandez, a 52-year-old realtor, lamented.

The Annual Event Comes Exactly One Year After A Morning Practice Turned Violent When A Gunman Opened Fire On Republican Lawmakers Gravely Wounding The Louisiana Lawmaker And Others
9:10 PM on Jun 14, 2018 CDT
WASHINGTON ;They say theres no crying in baseball.
But that was before a member of Congress ;House Majority Whip Steve Scalise ;was gravely wounded in a shooting during practice for a charity game, spent a year in painstaking recovery, and returned to the diamond for the annual contest just one year later.
On the games first pitch, he fielded a grounder and, from his knees,;threw out California Democrat Raul Ruiz. The crowd erupted as lawmakers, even Ruiz, huddled with him in celebration.
And with that, the 2018 Congressional Baseball Game was underway ;though the Republican excitement would soon fade as the Democrats continued their winning streak with a blowout 21-5 victory.
Sweet moment as Rep. Steve Scalise is mobbed by his teammates after snagging a grounder on the first pitch of tonight’s congressional baseball game.A year ago, Scalise was among four people shot during a GOP practice for the annual charity contest.
ABC News
The annual event comes exactly one year after a morning practice turned violent when James Hodgkinson, of Illinois, opened fire on the lawmakers, wounding;Scalise and lobbyist Matt Mika, as well as Austin Rep. Roger Williams aide Zack Barth and Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner. The gunman died after exchanging fire with Scalises security detail.

Congressional Baseball Game Takes On Greater Meaning After Shooting
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WASHINGTON; Republicans and Democrats took the field for their annual charity baseball game;Thursday, setting aside politics for a few hours of;spirited competition;a day after a shooting rampage left a wounded colleague fighting for survival.
The Congressional Baseball Game for Charity, played before a record crowd,;took on a more serious tone this year, as;organizers and attendees said it was a chance to show the nation that more u
nites Americans of both parties than divides them, and that the event could not be shut down by a gunman.
“I have some friends who are interns who were talking about going, and after the shooting, I mean, I have to go,” said Emily Cleveland of;Danville, Ill., as she entered Nationals Park for the game. “I think it’s a big statement that they’re still having it. I think it’s saying a lot because it’s America’s pastime. It’s a really American thing to do, to just go ahead anyway.”
A gunman opened fire on the;Republican;baseball team’s practice on a suburban Virginia field Wednesday, critically wounding Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and injuring three other people as;legislators and staffers;scrambled for cover;amid a barrage of bullets.
Scalise, the third most powerful Republican in the House, was shot through the hip and was listed in critical condition at Medstar Washington Hospital Center Thursday after undergoing;several surgeries.
The shooting only drew more people to the game Thursday evening.
Tonight we are all Team Scalise, Pelosi said.

Bleach Peddler: Trump Consumed ‘miracle Cure’
Ed Pilkington
The leader of a spurious church which peddled industrial bleach as a miracle cure for Covid-19 is claiming he provided Donald Trump with the product in the White House shortly before the former president made his notorious remarks about using disinfectant to treat the disease.
In the 90-minute interview he effectively presents himself as the source of Trumps fixation with the healing powers of disinfectant.
We were able to give through a contact with Trumps family a family member the bottles in my book, Grenon says. And he mentioned it on TV: I found this disinfectant.

The Delta Variant Is Spreading What Does It Mean For The Us
Donald Trump has zero desire to be speaker of the House of Representatives, his spokesman has said, though the former president continues to entertain discussion of the outlandish idea.
Under congressional rules, the House speaker does not have to be a sitting member of Congress, though all of them so far have been.
The notion of a Trump speakership was raised by his former adviser Steve Bannon. Trump himself called it so interesting last week, while current House minority leader and aspiring speaker Kevin McCarthy perhaps ironically misspoke when he seemed to encourage speculation.
McCarthy told Fox News: You know, Ive talked to President Trump many times, he tells me he wants to be speaker, and I think he should be president.
A spokesperson later said the California representative had meant to say Trump thought McCarthy should be speaker.
On Monday, Trump was asked about the idea in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network. Characteristically, he failed to fully disown it.
Well, Trump said, Ive heard the talk and its getting more and more. But its not something that I would have considered but certainly theres a lot of talk about it.
I have a good relationship with Kevin, and hopefully we will do everything traditionally so I have seen talk about that but its nothing that Ive ever considered.
Punchbowl News asked Jason Miller, Trumps outgoing spokesman, for comment.
Trump, Miller said, has zero desire to be speaker.

In Washington To Stall A Texas Gop
By Gromer Jeffers Jr.
6:09 PM on Aug 12, 2021 CDT
AUSTIN–Texas House Democrats who are camped in Washington and pushing for federal election reform legislation have more than voting rights in mind.
They also hope that getting a requirement that state election law changes must have federal approval will impact the upcoming process to redraw Texas legislative boundaries. There are also separate proposals that would curb the gerrymandering of legislative districts.
The Texas Legislature is expected to convene this fall for a special session on redistricting, where Republicans controlling the Senate, House and governors office will have nearly unchecked power to draw whatever legislative boundaries they want.
Just as they are doing with the controversial elections bill, Democrats hope federal lawmakers will be their cavalry.
Were very pleased that our advocacy in Washington last month has helped contribute to this accelerated timetable, said Rep. Chris Turner, D-Grand Prairie and chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Having a strong Voting Rights Act with preclearances is an essential tool to combating regressive Republican voting laws, as well as discriminatory redistricting plans. It was one of the key tools that was used in the last round of redistricting.
On Thursday the federal government began releasing population data from the most recent census that will be used to redraw local and federal election boundaries.

Batter Up: Republicans, Democrats Gear Up for 56th Congressional Baseball Game
Republicans have been wary of the media for decades, most put off by such irritants as a pronounced liberal bias in much news coverage plus a tendency among journalists to mix news with opinion and political slant. The trend, however, has gotten worse.
In just five years, the percentage of Republicans with at least some trust in national news organizations has been cut in half dropping from 70% in 2016 to 35% this year. This decline is fueling the continued widening of the partisan gap in trust of the media, says a new Pew Research Center analysis based on a jumbo survey of over 10,000 people.
Nearly eight-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents say they have a lot or some trust in the information that comes from national news organizations 43 percentage points higher than Republicans and Republican leaners , wrote analysts Jeffrey Gottfried and Jacob Liedke.
TOP STORIES‘Shaken to the core’: Terrorism fears increasing for U.S. allies, Hagerty says
This partisan gap is the largest of any time that this question has been asked since 2016. And it grows even wider to 53 points between liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans the authors said.
The 35% of Republicans who have at least some trust in national news organizations in 2021 is half that of in 2016 and has dropped 14 points since late 2019 . By comparison, Democrats have remained far more consistent in the past five years, ranging somewhere between 78% and 86%.

. is absolutely right. This bill is critical for our country. We must fight with everything we’ve got to pass the For the People Act and save our democracy.
Today they probably know it is going to be parked in a cul-de-sac and the Republicans, aided by Democrat Joe Manchin, are going to throw away the keys.
Heres what Merkley tweeted yesterday.
Jeff Merkley
Make no mistake: Our democracy is in crisis. Republican lawmakers are trying to restrict Americans’ right to vote all across the country. Tomorrow we have a chance to right these wrongs by passing the For the People Act. We must get it done!
And heres Klobuchar earlier today reminding everyone that Barack Obama has spoken out to support a compromise version of the bill put forward by Manchin .

There’s nothing that quite says summer like baseball.
A baseball field is a sanctuary for millions of boys and girls, moms and dads. From the working class to the white collar, from the Marine to the congressman, America’s pastime has been a respite from the day-to-day grind for generations.
Republicans Disappointed In Mlb All
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WASHINGTON The Republican National Committee is pushing back against Major League Baseballs decision to move the All-Star game out of Atlanta, Georgia, in opposition to the states new election rules.
I think the best thing that MLB can do now is to immediately retract their decision, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney said.
Tenney says the decision hurts local businesses and minority communities.
Its looking like a potentially, $100-million loss and then theyre going to move it to Colorado which has more restrictive voting rules, Tenney said.
In a statement Friday, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel blamed President Joe Biden, saying Georgias Black-owned small businesses are paying the price for his reckless misinformation campaign.
But Democrats say Major League Baseball has a right to take a stand against overly restrictive voting rules.
Well, I was actually glad to see Major League Baseball stand up and say that were not going to be in a place where leaders are deliberately moving backwards, Congressman Jim Himes said.
Himes and the White House say Georgia Republicans are worried about losing power.
The Republican party sadly has realized that when lots of people vote, you get an outcome like you got in Georgia, of all places. They dont win, Himes said.
For politicians who didnt like the outcome, theyre not changing their policies to win more votes, theyre changing the rules to exclude more voters, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said.

Rogue City Leaders: How Republicans Are Taking Power Away From Mayors
State lawmakers are preempting the ability of city leaders to enforce their own regulations. The moves represent a sharp ideological shift for a party that has long championed local control.

Mayors and city councils across Arizona issued face mask mandates during the pandemic to prevent the spread of Covid-19, angering conservative state lawmakers who decried government overreach. So the legislators turned to the newest Republican playbook and passed a law allowing businesses to ignore those public health requirements.
The one-line preemption law signed in April by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who refused to issue a statewide mask order, wont make much of an immediate difference now. It doesnt go into effect until later this year, and local officials have lifted mask mandates in compliance with CDC guidelines as the threat of the virus subsides.
But the bills main sponsor says it was needed to ensure rogue city leaders cant impose mask mandates again, should another outbreak occur.

Free NFL picks against the spread

Free NFL picks against the spread from expert predictions.
Check out our featured game of the day with best-given odds. In order to place a smart bet make sure you read through our preview of the game and injury report. We are here to minimize your daily online research and help you make the right betting decision.
While many sports have a pretty strong following in the sports betting community, there is one that has separated itself from the pack. Football is the top choice among sports bettors.
The evolution of football in the general sports landscape has been mirrored by the popularity of the game among sports bettors. In the first half of the 20th century, baseball was the most popular team sport in America.
New York Yankees slugger Babe Ruth was the biggest sports legend during this era. Football was still evolving at this time. The college game was bigger than the NFL at this point.
In the late 1950′s, pro football began to become more prominent. The 1958 NFL championship game between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants played a big role in the growth of pro football.
Millions tuned in to watch the dramatic, overtime contest on black and white televisions. While baseball was still the top sport heading into the 1960′s, football was closing fast.
The AFL was formed to compete with the NFL. Both leagues broadcast its games on Sunday afternoons. With the advent of color TV during this period, pro football’s popularity as a televised sport grew quickly.
The addition of the Super Bowl and merger of the leagues in the late 1960′s would soon have football on the brink of passing baseball heading into the 1970′s.
The NFL continued to grow in the 1970′s. Television ratings climbed for the networks. ABC’s Monday Night Football proved to be an instant hit after debuting in 1970. In the middle of the decade, the sport’s betting aspect was introduced to mainstream America on the NFL Today pregame show on CBS.
Former Las Vegas bookmaker Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder was part of the telecast each week.
While point spreads and odds were rarely ever mentioned on the show, his predictions for the upcoming games were obviously done with the sports bettor in mind to some degree. By the end of the 1970′s, football was clearly the most popular sport in the nation.
In the 1980′s, ESPN and other cable television outlets enabled more college and pro games to be shown than ever before. In the next decade, sports talk radio and the Internet enabled fans and bettors to gain a constant stream of information related to college football and the NFL. Along the way, football betting has played a significant role in the overall popularity of the sport.
Football Betting Basics
The most popular football bet is the point spread wager. Because there are about 40 points scored in a typical NFL game and usually a little more in college contests, it is useful to have a point spread in place for football.
Due to the disparity in teams, a typical NFL slate of games on a Sunday afternoon will have point spread ranges from a pick up to about two touchdowns.
For college games, big favorites can be favored by three, four or more touchdowns in a prospective mismatch. Money line or straight up prices for any point spread that is six points or higher forces the bettor to lay a huge price to win a far lesser amount by backing the favorite in these circumstances.
The point spread is the great equalizer. Once a point spread is established for a football game, the bettor only has to lay the vigorish or juice (usually 10%) on the wager. Here is what a typical NFL point spread might look like:
Steelers (+4) Cowboys (-4)
In this example, Dallas is a 4-point favorite. The team with the minus points is the favorite while the underdog club has plus points. To win a bet on the Cowboys, Dallas must win the game by five points or more.
If the bettor backs Pittsburgh, the Steelers must win the game or lose by three points or less for the bettor to cash in.
The next most popular bet in football is the total or over/under wager. In this type of wager, the bettor picks an over or under option for the total combined points that will be scored in the game by the two teams.
The point spread and over/under bet options for a particular game are parlayed together.
In a parlay, two or more bets are placed on a single wagering ticket. These bets are popular among novice bettors because there is less risk and more reward for a winning wager.
In a two-team football parlay, the bettor can win about $260 for a $100 bet. Parlays are avoided by most professional bettors because all of the bets on the parlay ticket must win.
A 1-1 record on the two bets of a parlay is the same as an 0-2 record. Both are losing tickets.
Money line bets are more popular in lower-scoring sports, like baseball, but are still used in football on occasions.
In point spreads that are small, like a field goal or less, the bettor can place a money line bet on a favorite without having to lay a huge price.
In turn, bettors will sometimes focus on underdogs to win straight up due to an attractive plus price on the money line. Prop bets on individual players are also quite popular among football bettors…Read More

Northwest heat wave builds, all-time records fall (AP) Oregon’s largest city broke its all-time heat record on Saturday. It could beat the new mark on Sunday. Forecasters say many Pacific Northwest communities may sweat through the hottest days in their histories as temperatures soar during a heat wave that has sent residents scrambling for relief. Stores sold out of portable air conditioners and fans, hospitals canceled outdoor vaccination clinics, cities opened cooling centers, baseball teams canceled or moved up weekend games, and utilities braced for possible power outages. Portland, Oregon, reached 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42.2 degrees Celsius) Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The previous heat record for Oregon’s largest city was 107 F (41.7 C), a mark hit in 1965 and 1981. Seattle reached 101 F (38.3 C) Saturday, making it the hottest June day on record and only the fourth time in recorded history the usually temperate city had topped 100 degrees.
Rattlesnakes everywhere: the odd consequences of California’s drought (The Guardian) Len Ramirez stalked through the dried landscape, scanning the ground ahead searching for movement. Called out to an estate in Napa Valley, the owner of Ramirez Rattlesnake Removal company was finishing up his last job of another busy day wrangling, removing and relocating snakes from homes across northern California. He’d found three in just this yard, including one nestled roughly 1,000 yards from the pool. Rattlesnakes are everywhere these days, he says—on front porches, in potted plants, and under children’s play equipment. Ramirez believes the drought may be partly to blame. Snakes are increasingly finding their way into urban environments in search of refuge from the rising temperatures and relief from the drying landscape. And it’s not just snakes. “Bears are showing up in areas where they’ve never seen before,” Rebecca Barboza, a wildlife biologist who studies the trend for the California department of fish and wildlife, told ABC News this month. Smaller animals and insects are also coming closer in search of water. Less perilous pests may also pose more problems during drought conditions. Ants, cockroaches and rodents and other visitors also need water to survive and human homes are typically where they go to find it when it’s absent in outdoor environments.
1st post-pandemic cruise ship from US sails away (AP) The first cruise ship to leave a U.S. port since the coronavirus pandemic brought the industry to a 15-month standstill sailed away on Saturday with nearly all vaccinated passengers on board. Celebrity Edge departed Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at 6 p.m. with the number of passengers limited to about 40% capacity, and with nearly all 1,100 passengers vaccinated against COVID-19. Celebrity Cruises, one of Royal Caribbean Cruise’s brands, says 99% of the passengers are vaccinated. Saturday’s sailing kicks off the cruise lines’ return to business with Carnival vessels already scheduled to depart from other ports next month. Industry officials are hoping all goes smooth to move past a chapter last year of deadly outbreaks on cruise ships that prompted ships to be rejected at ports and passengers to be forced into quarantine. Some passengers died of COVID-19 at sea while others fell so ill they had to be carried out of the vessels on stretchers.
Drug Gang Shootout Leaves 18 Dead In Mexico (AFP) A shootout between suspected drug cartels left 18 people dead Friday in Mexico, a government official said. The gunfight happened in a remote area of Zacatecas state in the country’s north, said Rocio Aguilar, a spokeswoman for the state government. Drug-related violence has claimed more than 300,000 lives in Mexico since 2006, when the government started deploying federal troops to fight the cartels. “There were 18 dead, and the confrontation occurred in the community of San Juan Capistrano, in the municipality of Valparaiso,” Aguilar added. Valparaiso borders Jalisco state, a stronghold of a powerful cartel called Jalisco Nueva Generacion.
Latin America Confronts a Pandemic Education Crisis (NYT) SOACHA, Colombia—Already, two of Gloria Vásquez’s children had dropped out of school during the pandemic, including her 8-year-old, Ximena, who had fallen so far behind that she struggled with the most basic arithmetic. “One plus one?” Ms. Vásquez quizzed her daughter one afternoon. “Four?” the little girl guessed helplessly. Deep into the second year of the pandemic, Latin America is facing an education crisis. It has suffered the longest school shutdowns of any region in the world, according to UNICEF, nearly 16 months in some areas. While many students in wealthy countries have returned to the classroom, 100 million children in Latin America are still in full or partial distance learning. The consequences are alarming, officials and education experts say: With economies in the region pummeled by the pandemic and connections to the classroom so badly frayed, children in primary and secondary school are dropping out in large numbers, sometimes to work wherever they can. Millions of children in Latin America may have already left the school system, the World Bank estimates. In Mexico, 1.8 million children and young people abandoned their educations this school year because of the pandemic or economic hardship, according to the national statistics agency.
Bangkok, 9 provinces restrict movements to curb rising cases (AP) Faced with a sharp rise in coronavirus cases, the Thai capital on Sunday announced a ban on indoor dining and gatherings of more than 20 people, in addition to the closure of construction sites and the sealing off of workers’ quarters in Bangkok and nine other provinces. The measures will remain for 30 days. The situation has become critical as the number of hospital beds in Bangkok for seriously ill COVID-19 patients is running short despite the creation of several field hospitals. Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha said Friday that a proposal for a seven-day curfew for all of Bangkok has been rejected for the time being.
Singapore’s new plan to ‘live with covid’ revealed (news.com.au) A country that has been one of the world’s most successful at combating Covid-19 has announced it will soon fundamentally change how it manages the pandemic. The city state of Singapore has stated covid will be treated like other endemic diseases such as flu. There will be no goals of zero transmission. Quarantine will be dumped for travellers and close contact of cases will not have to isolate. It also plans to no longer announce daily case numbers. But you may need to take tests to head to the shops or go to work. Senior Singaporean ministers have said it is the “new normal” of “living with covid”. “The bad news is that Covid-19 may never go away. The good news is that it is possible to live normally with it in our midst,” wrote Singapore’s trade Minister Gan Kim Yong, finance minister Lawrence Wong and health minister Ong Ye Kung said in an editorial in the Straits Times this week.
Riots in Lebanon over economy injure 10 soldiers, protesters (AP) Lebanese troops deployed in the northern city of Tripoli early Sunday taking positions around major state institutions after a night of protests and riots against worsening living conditions left several protesters and 10 soldiers injured. Sporadic protests were reported throughout Lebanon on Saturday as the country’s 20-month economic crisis worsened. The World Bank described the crisis as one of the worst the world has witnessed in 150 years. It is coupled with a political deadlock that has left Lebanon without a government since August. Lebanon has been suffering severe shortages of vital products including fuel, medicine and medical products, angering the public.
Blinken, Lapid meet in Rome amid reset US-Israel relations (AP) U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid will meet in Rome on Sunday as their new governments look to turn the page on former President Donald Trump and former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose close alliance aggravated partisan divisions within both countries. Now, with Trump sidelined in Florida and Netanyahu leading the opposition, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett are focused on pragmatic diplomacy rather than dramatic initiatives that risk fomenting opposition at home or distracting from other priorities. That approach—of managing the conflict rather than trying to solve it—may succeed in papering over domestic divisions. But it also maintains a status quo that the Palestinians find increasingly oppressive and hopeless, and which has fueled countless cycles of unrest. Officials expect there will be little settlement expansion beyond so-called “natural growth.” But that’s a vaguely defined term that could allow for considerable construction, as well as moving ahead with major infrastructure projects that pave the way for explosive future growth.
Ethiopia airstrike survivors recall massacre (AP) Maerg was serving customers at his cafe in Ethiopia’s Tigray village of Togoga when the military airstrike occurred, filling the room with dust and bringing down debris that struck him on the head. “Everything was covered in black smoke, it was like a hell,” he told The Associated Press by phone, recounting one of the deadliest attacks in the Tigray conflict. “There was so much blood.” Seven people were killed in his cafe alone, and some 30 were wounded, including his sister-in-law, who suffered burns on her face, hands and legs. Outside, he said, he saw dozens more bodies. As time passed, he watched in horror as survivors realized that Ethiopian soldiers were blocking medical aid from arriving. Such witness accounts are emerging after Ethiopia’s military has said it was responsible for the airstrike that struck Togoga’s busy marketplace on Tuesday, which health officials said killed at least 64 people and injured dozens more. Many died when soldiers blocked medical teams from reaching them, or from taking them to hospitals in the regional capital, Mekele, just 60 kilometers (37 miles) away, health workers said. Most of the victims were women and children, said a doctor who treated people at the scene.
South Africa resumes restrictions to fight surge (AP) South Africa has reintroduced tough restrictions including a ban on alcohol sales and an extended nightly curfew as it fights a fast-increasing surge of COVID-19 cases. President Cyril Ramaphosa says the delta variant that was first discovered in India appears to be driving South Africa’s new increase.
