Most people's investments are their college stock and real estate, the best investments I've made are planning tickets and car rentals, so one of the most common questions asked by people is how can they afford to travel.

In the past 3 years, I've spent a lot of money on travel but on every trip, I've made I've always made the money I spend and often very profitable so the first thing for me is that you've got purpose travel we all have trips because it's fun and interesting, but when you are planning where you want to go, think of multiple goals you can achieve on your trip, find something good.

How can it be an investment?

It doesn't have to be a cash investment, but you just have to find what your travels will benefit you in, for example: maybe you want to go to Switzerland for an epic physical century interval so you can sell that as stock footage or every location you want to shoot in a particular location to create An epic video only, it doesn't have to be movie related, there are endless opportunities.

How you can make your travel investment?

it just requires some creativity so for me a few years ago I got an internship opportunity in Switzerland where I made educational videos for a human rights group each weekend I would have free time to visit new countries so I would have to think to myself how would traveling to this destination be an investment for me.

for example: maybe if I go to York or Spain I can get an epic shot of me jumping off the sea arch that would make a cool Blog or Vlog if I go to this place in Greece I'll be able to get some awesome footage of one of the world's craziest beaches and get some other viral content there if I can't find a good reason to go on a trip.

besides having fun I have a hard time justifying spending the money in time so I guess my point is we all want to have a fun time while we travel so if we can also have another reason to go it can make your travels investment in home hopefully make you some money while you're at alright so another way traveling can be an investment is you can use your travels and experiences.

can help you get jobs and other opportunities while back I was a role to my classes at college but I decided to take a leave of absence for that semester and my brother and I decided to go on a two-week content trip to Europe I bottomed out my bank account buying new camera gear and covering all my travel expenses we went to Ibiza for Halloween.

we explored Reese's famous cities of Athens and then we headed over to Meteora we roamed the streets of London and we finished the trip with two days in Iceland I mean we got some of the most incredible footage and it was one of the most memorable trips of my life.

after those two weeks were over I came back broke and I was honestly a little discouraged but I was able to use that footage to make my two years blog and a few months later I use that blog to help me get an internship at the iconic beautiful destinations you don't know if beautiful destinations.

the most famous travel brands so for me it was like a dream job anyways I got the internship and worked with them in New York City all summer long blogging about them it was just an awesome opportunity so if you look at traveling from that aspect heavy trip might not make you money but you're building your portfolio and also improving your skills which can help you land your dream job.

Educational Investment

some of my greatest life lessons weren't learned in a college lecture hall rather they were discovered when I was traveling in a foreign country being present and learning.

from my surroundings, he discovered a lot about who are and what we value in life and it helps you evaluate where you want to be in the upcoming years traveling has given me my greatest memories it's where I've truly felt alive.

new things that make you feel the same excitement you felt as a child because everything is it's new it's not the same old grind when you're living back at home I remember the first time I saw the northern lights I was sleeping on this cliff edge in Norway's arctic circle.

it was just a just your-fork surreal experience it was a memory I'll cherish forever and an experience I would have never gotten if I decided to never leave my country.

so one important life lesson that I realized is that I've never regretted the money that I spent on traveling the only thing I've regretted is wasting time and not traveling more we can always make more money but our time is limited and some opportunities will only come once.

when old people are on their deathbeds and are asked what their greatest regrets are most of the regrets aren't about things that they did rather they regret the things that they didn't do to keep that in mind if you are scared about traveling you are scared about all the things that could go wrong. just remember that thousands and millions of people have done the same thing you want to do and they've been safe.

just give it a go have some faith and give it a go the most important thing about traveling is you just got to do it and as you travel more you'll find ways to make it an investment whether it's a monetary investment or it's just an educational investment in yourself.

there will always be a reason to not travel but there are a thousand reasons to go and see the world it may break your bank and you have to go work a week or two to make that money back I almost guaranteed that you won't regret it. travel you'll be grateful for the memories you made for the rest of your life all right so to end this blog. going to go through those points one last time so

So This is Love - Merhayes/ Merlex

About 2 weeks ago, @herrera-n-hayes gave me a prompt in which Merhayes went to visit Alex in Kansas, and there, Alex tells Meredith that she’s smitten and in love with Hayes. The one shot is about 2900 words long because I am someone who has a very hard time sparring details, even the smallest most insignificant ones. Anyways, enjoy some pure fluffy Merhayes and Merlex friendship because I’ve been posting a lot of angst lately and we all deserve some feel-good content every once and awhile. I’m going to insert a ‘keep reading’ line just cause of how long it is. Anyways, enjoy!

It’d been a very long time since Meredith Grey last saw Alex Karev. She’d talked to him on the phone multiple times since he’d left, but most of their time talking consisted of her ratting him out for leaving her, Jo, her kids, Bailey and Richard, and up until she became friends with Cormac Hayes, his department. So, when Meredith Grey received a text in the middle of summer from her best friend saying, “Izzie’s out of town next weekend, would you want to come visit me and the kids? You could bring your kids.” She knew she had no reason to say no. Part of her wanted to, so bad. But she was admittedly missing her person – she had just made some major life changes and she wanted so badly to tell Alex and get his approval. So, she said yes, and went to find the one person she knew she wanted to bring along.

“Hey,” Meredith said softly, coming up behind her boyfriend and placing her hand on his back. He turned to look at her and smiled. “Hey. How’s it going?” He asked her as she grabbed his hand. “How would you feel about taking a trip next weekend to Kansas? With the kids and I, to visit Alex?” He looked at her, surprised. “Really? Are you sure you want me to go with you? You haven’t seen Karev in a while, are you sure you don’t want to catch up alone?” Meredith appreciated that he wanted to let her have time alone with Alex, but she knew that Alex was opinionated and wasn’t afraid to tell her when she was making a mistake – and she wanted him to confirm that she was doing the right thing. She knew in her heart that this was who she was meant to be with and that nothing he said would change how she felt, but his approval would be nice.

“Yeah – I’m sure I want you there. It’s important to me. We can give the boys the option of whether or not they want to stay home or come with us.” Austin and Liam Hayes were now 16 and 18 respectively, and while they were very quickly bonding with Meredith’s trio, she didn’t know if they’d really want to hang out with a 9-year-old, a 7-year-old, 2 6-year-old’s and a 5-year-old while their parents were all hanging out. “Okay.” He finally said after a minute of contemplating the offer. Meredith’s face lit up. “Really?!” She smiled brightly. “Yeah, really. We can talk to the kids tonight after work.” Meredith squealed ever so slightly as she hugged Cormac. “You’re the best.” She said confidently, kissing him quickly afterwards. “I’m gonna go talk to Bailey, make sure we’ll have next weekend off.” Cormac’s pager went off. “I was going to offer to go with you, but it never ends. We can talk more later.” They gave each other one last quick kiss and went their separate ways.

Later that night, after finishing their shifts and getting approval from Bailey to get time off for the following weekend, Meredith and Cormac headed back to Meredith’s new house. She’d decided to sell her old house to Amelia and Link, who’d recently gotten married and were expecting their second child in a few months. It had felt a lot like deja-vu from when she sold Alex the house to move into the dream-house with Derek and Zola, while she was expecting Bailey. Meredith’s only request when picking out her new place was that it had to be close to Amelia and Link – she didn’t want to have to drive very far in the middle of the night if they were having troubles with Scout and eventually their daughter.

The Grey-Shepherd children quickly ran up to their mother when she got inside. “Hey guys!” She said, kneeling down to hug them. Little Ellis gave Cormac a quick hug too. She’d quickly taken a liking to Cormac, and she took after her mom in how she always called him ‘Hayes’. Cormac had made it very clear to the kids when he and Meredith began dating that he could not and would never replace their dad, and he’d never overstepped with their trust. Meredith did the same with Austin and Liam, but it took them a bit longer to warm up to her since they were, well, teenage boys, and they were old enough to remember losing their mom. Eventually they got there though, and Meredith and Cormac were ecstatic when they did.

Cormac headed downstairs to say hello to his sons, get them away from their video games long enough to talk to them about the trip, and then get them back home. It was convenient for Meredith that her boyfriend’s children were old enough to watch her three. It gave the boys opportunities to bond with the kids and gave Meredith some peace of mind that her babies were in relatively good hands. Meredith entered her living room and gathered her kids around her. “So, guys, I got a text from Uncle Alex this morning.” The children’s eyes lit up – Zola’s especially. “And he invited us all over to his house to meet your cousins and hang out with him for the weekend.” That sentence was followed by jumping and squealing from all 3 of the children. “So, how does a plane ride sound next week?” More squealing and excitement followed. Meredith knew that this news would have her kids bouncing off the walls and pestering her about whether It was time to go yet or not, for the next week.

Meredith was spot on in her guess about the kids pestering her every day until the night before they left. The night before leaving was hectic – Cormac, Austin, and Liam were staying at Meredith’s overnight, which meant packing for 5 kids and 2 adults all in the same house. The couple was grateful to have Amelia so close to help Ellis pick out what things she wanted to take, while Meredith packed for herself and Zola, and Cormac helped Bailey in his decisions between superhero shirts. Austin and Liam were just trying to figure out how many portable games they could feasibly bring along without getting in trouble. Early Friday morning, the gang packed their suitcases in the back of Meredith’s car and made their way to the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Maggie and Amelia followed along in Amelia’s car, so that Maggie could drive the car back to the house after they made it into the airport and onto the plane.

5 hours later, the plane had safely landed, the car was rented, and everyone was on their way to their hotel. Austin and Liam had successfully convinced their dad to let them stay in a separate room from the one where he and Meredith and her kids would be sleeping. About an hour after arriving at the hotel, everyone was sufficiently unpacked. Zola, Bailey, and Ellis were antsy to go visit Alex. Austin and Liam decided to stay back, so Cormac and Meredith loaded the Grey-Shepherd children into their rental car and headed for Alex’s place.

Ellis, Bailey, and Zola were giggly as Meredith pulled into the driveway of Alex’s farmhouse. Cormac only found himself feeling increasingly nervous. He’d already met all of the people Meredith considered family at the hospital, except for Alex. He didn’t even know if Meredith had told Alex that he was joining them. He knew that Alex was, aside from Cristina, Meredith’s best friend and that making a good first impression was key, far different from the first impression he’d made on Meredith. She parked the car and the two adults got out to let the kids out of their car seats. The kids immediately ran to the door and started pounding on it. Alex opened the door and the kids jumped on him almost immediately. Meredith laughed as she watched while she grabbed her purse and walked around the car to grab Cormac’s hand before heading into the house. “Hey guys!” Alex hugged the kids who were more than excited to see him. Meredith smiled at her friend. Alexis and Eli came by and the kids immediately hit it off. As Meredith and Cormac approached the door, Alex’s twins were showing off their toys to Mer’s kids. Meredith let go of her boyfriend’s hand to hug Alex. “I’ve missed you so much.” She said as she stepped back from Alex. “Me too, Mer. I’m glad you were able to come visit. Now are you going to introduce me to your boyfriend?” Meredith laughed. Alex knew that Meredith was in a relationship and that he would be coming, she just refrained from telling any details to him other than that. “Alex, meet Cormac Hayes. Hayes, this is Alex.” Cormac extended his hand and Alex shook it. “It’s nice to meet you, Grey and Yang have told me a lot about you.” Alex looked confused. “Wait, you know Yang?” “Yeah, I worked at her hospital in Switzerland for 2 years after my wife died. She talked a lot about some guy she called ‘Evil Spawn’. When Grey and I first became friends, she explained it a bit further.” Alex laughed and the adults moved inside the house further and sat down on the couch, with plenty of conversation to go around.

After hours of talking and being intermittently interrupted by the young children showing them various toys around the house, the sun began to set. Cormac liked Alex, the two pediatric surgeons found they had a lot in common, and it was easy to keep conversation flowing between the three of them. However, he knew that it was wind-down time for all of the children, and he wanted Meredith and Alex to have some time alone to catch up. Meredith was just about to check the time on her phone, but Cormac pushed her hand down. “It’s getting late, I know the kids have to wind down and go to bed soon. You stay here and spend as much time as you want with Alex, I’ll take the kids back to the hotel and take care of them for the night.” Meredith looked up and half-smiled at her boyfriend. “Are you sure?” She laced their fingers together. “Yeah, you two have fun.” The two smiled at each other, and Hayes kissed Meredith’s cheek. “Alex, it was nice meeting you.” “You too.” Alex responded enthusiastically. The men shook hands and Cormac rounded up the kids, getting them ready to head back to the hotel.

Meredith helped put Eli and Alexis to bed after she said goodnight to her kids and boyfriend, then she and Alex made their way to his kitchen. “Please tell me you have tequila.” Meredith said with a laugh. Alex smiled at his friend and pulled a bottle of tequila from his liquor cabinet for Meredith, and a bottle of whiskey for himself. “You and Hayes really have a lot in common, he loves whiskey.” Alex smirked at his best friend. “Your boyfriend has been gone for maybe 10 minutes and you’re already talking about him again.” Meredith smiled at Alex’s acknowledgement. “What can I say? He’s pretty great.” She exclaimed with a massive smile as she took a drink from the tequila bottle. “So?” Meredith continued. “What did you think of him?” She could tell that the two got along but she was more interested in what he had to think about the relationship. “Well, what matters is how you feel about him.” Alex told Meredith, encouraging her to talk about her feelings rather than his own. The best friends made their way back to the couch and Alex tossed Meredith a blanket. “Now, tell me what made you fall for him.” Alex was genuinely interested in Meredith’s response to this. It wasn’t like he hadn’t already made up his mind about Cormac, but he wanted to hear the truth from Meredith before telling her what he thought.

“He’s just the best. He loves the kids, they love him, and he always makes sure to talk to the kids about Derek – he loves seeing how they light up when they get to talk about their dad. He just instantly knows when I need to deal with something by myself or if he needs to help me out, he never oversteps, and he never gets jealous when I talk about Derek. I’m telling you Alex, Cristina really knew what she was doing when she sent him to Seattle. I’m really glad she did.” For the next five minutes, Meredith continued to list off all the things he did that made her smile, laugh, and just feel genuinely happy. Alex chuckled to himself listening to his best friend ramble about Cormac. “What?” Meredith’s heart began pounding when she realized he was laughing. “Dude, you’re in love.” He smirked and laughed at her a little more. “Like, in love, in love. You’re infatuated. I hope you’ve told him by now because it’s plastered all over your lovesick face every time you look at him. Have you told him you’re in love with him yet?” He asked her. “We’ve almost said I love you a couple of times. But no.” Alex’s eyes widened. “Trust your heart, Mer. He’s not Derek, but he knows that. And it really seems like he respects that. You’re lucky to have found him.” Meredith smiled at Alex. She knew he was right. She did love Cormac Hayes. Her heart was full – she’d just gotten her best friend’s seal of approval, she accepted the fact that she was in love because of it, and she was sitting with Alex, on his couch, drinking tequila with him just like old times. They moved on from the topic of love fairly quickly, and instead they sat together, laughing and reminiscing about their past.

Meredith arrived back at the hotel about 2 hours later. Her children were fast asleep, but Cormac was still wide awake, laying in their bed. “Hey.” Meredith whispered as she quietly put her purse down. Cormac looked up from his phone and smiled at his girlfriend. “Hey, did you have fun?” Meredith smiled back at him. “Yeah, I did. Thanks for taking the kids back to the hotel. I think all the playing with Alexis and Eli wore them out.” She laughed quietly, as did he. “Yeah, I don’t think we’ll have to worry about them till later tomorrow morning.” Meredith finished getting out of her daytime clothes, put on her shorts and bralette, and climbed into bed. “I was waiting for you to get back before going to sleep.” He whispered in her ear. She kissed him tenderly as she remembered what Alex had told her. “You know, talking with Alex tonight made me realize something.” Meredith said as she rested her head on his shoulder. “Oh yeah, what?” He asked, lacing their fingers together. “I don’t want you to freak out.” She said, looking up at him. His face changed to be incredibly confused very quickly. “What would I freak out about?” He asked her, worried.

“While I was talking with him tonight, I realized that, uh, I love you. More than that - I’m in love with you. With us, with the idea of our families coming together. And, uh, it’s totally okay if you don’t say it back, or are a little spooked. I know the first I love you can take time to come to terms with.” Cormac’s face became more and more surprised with every word Meredith whispered. She turned on her side, fully expecting Cormac to turn away from her while he processed everything that she’d just told him. But, like it was an everyday occurrence, Cormac immediately shifted and turned on his side as well, facing her back, and he wrapped his arm around her waist. During 2 minutes of complete silence, Cormac Hayes kept thinking about how Abigail told him before dying that she wanted to see him fall in love again. He thought about how happy he was with Meredith, how deeply she respected Abby and how much she loved hearing the stories he’d tell her about her.

So, even though it scared him, he pulled Meredith closer to him in the bed, to which she tangled their legs together and laced their fingers together, and he whispered in her ear, “I’m in love with you too.” He could feel her once racing heartbeat begin to stabilize, and her breathing became more normal as well. Though he couldn’t see her face, he could feel her smiling as their faces nuzzled together. He placed one last kiss on her neck and cheek before closing his eyes and falling asleep, happily holding the woman he loved. He knew for a fact that Abigail was rooting for them in heaven, and that she was happy to see them so happy, to see her sons so loved, and to see Cormac finally fulfilling her final wish for him.

My job is 80% travel which means from Monday to Thursday I’m not home, I’m at the client site in another city and/or state. The typical cadence of my week is:

Fly to the client on Monday and work a half day.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are hell days for consultants because they’re full work days.

Thursday, I work a half day and then fly home from the client.

Friday, we all work from home and handle firm administrative work (proposals, time sheets, expenses, travel booking) in addition to squeezing in appointments (doctor, dental, car, dry cleaning, bank) because we’re gone most of the week and everything’s closed on the weekends.

Combined with the following asks:

Do you fly two times a week every week? Yes. All strategy consultants are on a plane two times a week, every week, to the client site and back wherever it is in the country, no exceptions.I have a home office in Downtown Los Angeles but I’m never there and it’s understood it’s better to live closer to the airport than your home office because of the travel requirements.

Why do you travel so much? It’s an expectation of this role, physical presence is crucial to be effective in this business. Most of the work strategy consultants do needs to be conducted on-site because we work with sensitive data that can’t be sent over email and we interact with the organization’s stakeholders regularly. Studies show that face to face interaction increases the efficacy of delivery and assists with building relationships.

Do you ever get sent overseas to international projects in other countries? Yes, but it’s rare. I’ve had a projects where the client’s headquarters were in Canada and Switzerland, in Asia because I was conducting training for internal arms of the firm, in my home country because I knew the language, and few other engagements that needed my particular set of skills.

Note that international travel is expensive and there needs to be a business reason for the firm to justify your travel. They’ll only select you if you have a very particular set of skills they can’t find anywhere else. You can’t just go, “Hey, I want to work in Paris because Europe sounds cool!” and have that automatically approved. If there’s a local resource in the client city who can do the work then your organization has no reason to fly in someone from across the world when someone next door will do.

If I want your career will I have to travel that much too? Yes, unless you join a regional consulting firm with local clients then you can negotiate driving to and from the client site like a traditional job.

Who pays for your travel? Flights, hotel, rental car/taxi, and food are all paid for by the client but we keep all the loyalty points we earn (airline, hotel, and rental car) so most of us accumulate insane account balances and loyalty statuses resulting in free vacations. All business expenses are charged to the corporate cards we’re each given upon hire.

How much does your travel typically cost?

Flight: $600 to $800 for a round trip ticket = $800

Hotel: $300 corporate rate per night * 3 nights per week = $900

Rental Car: $50 per day * 4 days per week = $200

Taxi to and from home: $50 * 2 = $100

Food: $75 per day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner * 4 days per week = $300

Total: ~$2300 per week * 4 weeks per month = $9,200 per month

How do you feel about the travel? The glitz and glamour of business travel wears off quickly after the 10000th flight delay and 99999th screaming baby (pro tip: noise cancelling headphones are a godsend). If you want to spot a consultant, just look at the most unimpressed person in first class with a black Tumi bag, iPhone headset, and navy blazer.

How do you maintain a social life if you’re gone Monday to Thursday? You don’t, that’s why most people in this career burn out and quit to exit to industry after 2-3 years. It’s a huge sacrifice not to be home Monday to Thursday. You’re physically inaccessible during those days so you communicate via text, calls, facetime, FB messenger, whatever works. That’s why my weekends are so important with reconnecting with friends and family.

How many hours of sleep do you get per night?

I aim for 7-8 hours. I avoid skimping on sleep at all costs.

Hello again! The long pause has been because I wrapped up the trip (well, this leg) and came home for August in Seattle. I head back out in September for another ~2 months. Here’s everywhere I spent a night in my first 4 months of travel (post-Belize):

Growing up, whenever we finished a family trip, my mother would force lovingly encourage us to go around the table and name our favorite parts of the trip. So, in that spirit, I present my wrap up:

Best overall experience: Mokrin House, Serbia.

Favorite hotel: Square Nine, Belgrade, Serbia. Runner up: Rooms Hotel, Tbilisi, Georgia.

Favorite hostel: none, they were all terrible, cell phones have killed hostels, hostels are dead.

Favorite Airbnb, before I became ethically opposed to the tourism disaster that an unregulated Airbnb is unleashing on European cities and stopped using the site entirely: my cave in the gypsy neighborhood of Granada

Best meal: this is a three way tie between MÁK in Budapest, Machneyuda in Jerusalem, and Project 72 in Novi Sad, Serbia. Note: the only Michelin star restaurant I ate at on this trip/in my life does not make the list (Mina in Bilbao, Spain)

Meals shared unexpectedly with strangers: far too many to count.

Best gelato/ice cream: the competition is fierce here as I felt it was my duty to sample the ice cream every single place I went. The best gelato everywhere I went was made by Italians, and the win goes to Nannarella in Lisbon

Favorite bar: Bellboy, Tel Aviv.

Strangest time I was asked to pose as a foot model for animal wisdom based spiritual healing ceremonies: ok it was just that one time at a mountain yurt retreat in Colmenar, Spain

Most meaningful experience: 3 day silent meditation retreat on my family’s kibbutz in northern Israel

Favorite gym: A Philippe Starck masterpiece in Bilbao, Spain

Favorite museum: Design Museum Holon, Tel Aviv, Israel (thanks Lindsey!) both the museum building itself and the featured exhibit on Maarten Baas

Most beautiful gardens/parks: three way tie between Sintra in Portugal, Seville and Cordoba, Spain

Dreamiest landscapes: Tuscany and Lake Como. Shocker, I know

Favorite outdoor adventure: caving and mountain biking in Romania

Easiest place to meet people: Israel

Hardest place to meet people: Seville, Spain

Flights taken: 11

Flights purchased but not taken: 2

Number of times things were confiscated from me at airport security: 5 (all nail files/clippers/scissors)

Number of times I responded to these unnecessary confiscations calmly and in stride: 0

Rental cars returned with no body damage: 2

Nuthin’, Zer-matt-er with you?

Couldn’t resist.

The train was 90% windows to give you the full due of the landscape – it climbed murkily up the Alps, the clouds filtering a moody light on the Swiss countryside. My face was glued to the windows, half afraid the glass would disappear a-la-harry potter and I would find myself tumbling down into the craggy cliffs below. A little black yak poked its head up over the edge of the tracks, chewing with its mouth open.

“You alright?” the standard Brit greeting by Aleks, who met us at the station at 3pm with a grin. She’d lived here for two years, teaching skiing in the winter months with her (now long-distance) boyfriend Fede. She’s now one of my closest friends in London. We’d left at 4am, but arriving in the village of Zermatt (the meadow), with the Matterhorn (meadow-horn, or Zermatt’s peak) looming in the background, the crisp Alpine air swirling around us, we were re-energized.

It was a steep uphill climb to our airbnb - in the middle of the village was a silky turquoise stream, covered in ice and snow, and the town swung upwards in both directions from there. The altitude winded you with any physical exertion, gasping for air.

Everywhere you went, you could see the Matterhorn looming in the distance - Sauron, all-seeing-eye of Zermatt. The menacing jaunt of the Matterhorn, all elbows, unravels into the lush white village - carless, carefree, somehow held in time. Notoriously dangerous to scale, the first guy who did it lost four comrades in the ascent in 1865, and over 500 people have died trying to climb it. The first thing to know about this range is to respect it - this isn’t the Poconos, or even the Rockies. The peak is so high you could see clouds breaking against the ancient glacier, suddenly I’m reminded of Titanic. Zermatt is at the very south of the country, which has an interesting feature - the only ski-lift in the world where you start off in one country (Switzerland) and arrive in another (Italy). In fact, you can take a day and ski in Italy if you wanted, though it’s a pretty long gondola ride.

2/4 of us had skied once in our lives, and Aleks was kind enough to give us private lessons, something she used to provide only for high-profile clients - by far the best instructions I’ve ever had, and I’ve been skiing since I was 5. I didn’t mind waiting, with this view. And by day two, she had all four of us skiing on Reds (Blacks back in the US).

One of the best trips yet. It's been two days since we left and I'm still thinking about this view. Check out @afed1123 (yellow pants at the end) killing it on his second day on a slope ever! Actually a little angry about how quickly he picked it up considering how long it took me to learn as a kid 🤦🏻‍♀️

We didn’t realize that a storm was coming in, however, and by the second day, only 3/52 slopes were open on the entire mountain. With only 2 full days in Zermatt, we went for it anyways. The conditions were pretty scary, but still worth it.

1) a snow storm came in today, meaning only 3/52 trails were open. The wind at the top of the only open train was 55 km/hr, and you could barely see in front of you. ➡️ 2) once you got past the crazy steep bits, the trail closes to this scenic, meandering path that just coasts slowly into town, with plenty of apres ski pubs along the way. We spent most of the last sunny day just wandering around town before the 8.5 hour journey home - there are so many charming hotels and cabins in town, including this lopsided shed.

Spotted: sticks on rocks. Actually it's an old school storage shed, raised on stilts so the grains and seeds stored over winter would be less accessible to mice and other critters. One of the few left standing in the otherwise posh village of zermatt. To the left is an electric-motor taxi in the car-free town.

If I had more time, I wish I could’ve done a few hikes and obviously skied more. The town feels suspended in time - I imagine it looked more or less the same 50 years ago, and will probably look and feel quite similar in the next 50. Being there felt a world away, everywhere you stood you were sort of in awe of the landscape, with the sharp cliffs and mountains so jarringly close and so intimidatingly high. Also being there made me aware of how out of shape I was - it’d be difficult enough hauling pounds of ski gear around town, but the altitude was exhausting. The two weeks I put in at the gym was not enough to prepare me for it.

Food in Zermatt:

CHEESE: obviously Swiss cheese, and fondue is the standard apres ski fare. When you’re burning so many calories a day, eating straight up cheese as a main course is kind of forgiven.

BEER: lots of chalets sprinkled throughout the mountain begging you to stop by for a drink, and once again, something American slopes should be allowed to have if people don’t abuse it

ROSTI: potato pancakes, enough said. Topped with cheese and ham, or with a side of sausage. Actually there’s just a lot of potato in general.

Overall, food is expensive (see points below). We mostly picked up groceries from the Migros and Co-op and cooked at home, but if you have the budget, there are supposed to be a high number of Michelin restaurants in the village.

Things to know about Zermatt if you’re visiting:

It’s a long trek to get there – there are several ways, flying in through Zurich, Geneva or Basel (like we did), but regardless you’ll be spending at least three hours on a train before you arrive in Zermatt. Don’t despair, it’s a beautiful journey, and also it’s the only way to get there because…

There are no cars in the village – the closest parking lot is in the neighbouring town, though there are electric taxis you can rent that will putt you around town. Again, not cheap. But the whole village is walkable, and takes about 40 minutes to cross the full diameter.

It’s one of the more expensive European ski towns – our cheapest meal was a $22 burger, and even the groceries were astonishingly expensive. Our Airbnb was one of the last under the $200/night range, and then the prices jumped to $750. Book early and with a group.

There are two main slope access points - Sunnegga, which gives you access to the Gornergrat and Rothorn, with easy to advanced range of slopes, and the Zermatt Furi train, which takes you to the direction of the Matterhorn, where there’s a number of advanced and off-piste slopes at Klein Matterhorn and Schwarzsee. Even in Sunnegga, you can find plenty of reds and blacks, including Obere National, which is the main run for World Ski competitions.

Where we went:

Rentals: Glacier Sport, in town on the main high street. About $120 for two days

Lift tickets: Zermatt Tourism office in town on the high street. $146 for two days. Return your card pass for a $5 rebate.

I don’t think i’ve ever been in such a beautiful place to ski, and it’s one of our favorite Europe trips to date. The skiing and landscape was just unbelievable. We will definitely be coming back!!

In Croatia, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must-see destination we were fortunate to see in the off-season of autumn. Plitvice’s stunning beauty brought us there, and we had an unforgettable experience. It was pure eye-candy to see so many waterfalls in one place. Here are some things to know before going and a short video of our experience in the park.

Why visit Plitvice Lakes National Park?

The primary reasons to visit Plitvice are the 16 turquoise lakes combined by streams and stunning waterfalls. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to wildlife, and various flora and fauna. We love the beauty of this magical place.

Our Trip to Plitvice Lakes

On our first pass through Croatia, we missed Plitvice Lakes National Park. We were trying to time our visit through the country to finish before we had a house sit in Montenegro. Fortunately, our route sent us back up to Croatia on our way to Switzerland, allowing us to visit this park. When we headed to Plitvice Lakes in December, we were hoping to see snow and icy lakes, and it excited us when there was some at the entrance. We were disappointed to find little snow on the lakes themselves.

Our Experience

We walked on wooden pathways leading to some of the most dramatic waterfalls we have seen. While in the park we found boardwalks that literally lead right up the falls! Water was spraying our shoes through the steps. When we climbed high above the falls, we had some killer views of the paths and lakes below. We even found cute little ice snowmen on a path. Holee had to take a selfie with it.

Our Favorite Viewpoints

The park has two kinds of paths. There are paths by the lakes and waterfalls, and also ones high above for stunning views of the park. We recommend going to both to get a different perspective on the grandeur of this place. There are several viewpoints we enjoyed and some are easy to miss. Here are some of our favorites.

Upon entering the park, the first viewpoint would be hard to miss as it is near the gate.

Veliki Slap

After crossing over the Kaluderovac Lake on a wooden path, you turn right and get to Veliki Slap. This one is easy to miss as you want to keep progressing left towards all of the other waterfalls. See map number 23 below for the location. This is one of the top photo spots in the park. Say cheese!

Boardwalk Junction View

Between entrance 1 and bus stop ST1, there is a magnificent view down onto the boardwalks around the lake. It was hard to leave this spot.

Going in Late Autumn

Late autumn is the off-season for this park. The good news is we had the possibility of getting snow, which creates an incredible contrast with the turquoise blue waters. There are far fewer people around this time of year as well, allowing us to explore the park without hoards of tourists. The upper lakes and the caves were closed unfortunately, and that makes us want to go back again. We love visiting national parks in the winter and arrived as close as we could.

Things to know about Plitvice Lakes

In late autumn, one day may be enough to see the park due to limited access. However, there is a two-day ticket available which is discounted below the cost of two single-day tickets if you want to take your time exploring the park.

Autumn is a good time to see the park crowd-free. We loved walking these empty pathways.

There are toilets on-site and you do not have to pay for them.

Benches are available throughout the park so you can relax while enjoying the waterfalls. Not all are as elaborate as this one.

Prices are based on the time of day you arrive, seasonality, and age. Check the official website for the current prices. The price is drastically lower in the off-season.

Since the park is huge, you will take a boat and a shuttle to get around the major sections of the park. These will only take you one way and are included in the price of admission.

Check the weather before you go. Unlike the coast of Croatia, the weather can be more unpredictable with rain and snow in the off-season.

Have a good camera ready to capture the beauty of the park.

Bring your own food to save time and avoid lengthy lines at the dining areas. We were starved with only one place open this time of year.

Bring a garbage bag to pack out your trash as bins are not easily found within the park.

Getting There

Getting to Plitvice Lakes is easy by car or bus. We rented a car and drove in from Zadar and it took about an hour and a half. The drive there has mostly empty, well-paved roads with beautiful scenery. The video shows many of the roads on the drive in from Zadar. Rental cars are pretty cheap here, so it ends up being a good deal if you have more than one person. Otherwise, there are options by bus.

Here are the driving distances and times from popular locations in Croatia, ordered by drive times. You can find rental cars for as little as €7 or $8 USD per day.

Zadar: 128 km, 1 hour 40 minutes

Zagreb: 135 km, 2 hours

Split: 250 km, 3 hours or 2 hours 30 minutes w/ tolls

Pula: 240 km, 3 hours 30 minutes

Dubrovnik: 450 km, 5 hours with border crossing and tolls

Going by bus is simple, and you can buy tickets online or at the bus terminals. The cost is around €13 or $15 USD per person. Some popular buses are Flixbus and Croatia Bus which we used all over the country.

Our Thoughts

We loved visiting this park in December and capturing all the beauty it holds. On our next trip, we plan to visit in September or June, which are shoulder seasons with good weather and lush greenery. The upper lakes will be open for us too, so we will try to find lodging near the park to avoid the longer drives from Zagreb or Zadar.

We recommend you go in June or September to get a balance of pleasant weather and lower crowd sizes. We likely saw this place at its worst and it was still amazing. We can’t wait to see it again when it is green. This place is beautiful at any time of the year, and each season has its own uniqueness.

List of 15 Foreign Countries That Accept Indian Driving License

When you travel foreign country, you generally depend on the local or public transport system to reach your destination. But driving a car or a bike through the scenic locations will certainly add to your memorable trip. There are several interesting countries that allow you to drive with an Indian License and do not require an International Driving License or International Driving Permit (IDP)? All you need is your Indian Driving License and you can travel the country without worrying.

There are 15 Foreign Countries That Accept Indian Driving License

1. United States of America (USA)

Most states in the USA allow you to drive a rented car with your Indian DL. You can drive for a period of 1 year but the document is valid and is in English. Along with the DL, you need to carry the I-94 form which contains the date on which you entered the USA.

2. Malaysia

To drive on Malaysian roads, your Indian DL should be in English or in Malay. The document has to be vetted by the issuing authority or the Indian Embassy in Malaysia.

3. Germany

You can drive in Germany for 6 months with your Indian DL. You have to carry a German translated copy of your DL and it is advisable to carry an International Driving Permit in case the local authorities want you to hold one to drive.

4. Australia

You drive on the left side of the road in Australia similar to driving in India. You can drive through the roads of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Australian Capital Region and Northern Region for a period of 3 months. Ensure your DL is in English and not in any of the Indian vernacular languages.

5. United Kingdom

You can drive on the roads of the United Kingdom (UK) which includes England, Wales and Scotland with your Indian DL for a period of 1-year. Please note that the UK allows drivers with Indian DL only a certain class of vehicles and not all.

6. New Zealand

You can drive using your Indian DL in New Zealand for a period of 1-year. However, you need to be 21 years old to drive a car in the country. You need to drive on the left side of the road just like India. Ensure your DL is in English or a translated copy authorised by the New Zealand Transport Agency.

7. Switzerland

Driving through the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland is an experience in itself. With your Indian driving licence, you can experience the scenic beauty of the country. It is valid for a period of 1-year. Also, ensure that your DL is in English while driving a rented car in Switzerland.

8. South Africa

South Africa boasts picturesque mountains and wildlife sanctuaries. You can drive a car with your Indian DL and should be in English along with your photograph and signature on it. Some car rental agencies may ask for an international driving licence.

9. Sweden

To drive a car in Sweden, your DL has to be either in English, Swedish, German, French or Norwegian. The DL has to accompany a valid/accepted ID and the validity of the Indian licence in Sweden is 1-year.

10. Singapore

To drive in Singapore you need to be 18-years old and your Indian Driving Licence is valid for 12 months. After that, you need to get a Singapore Driving Licence. Ensure your DL is in English if not you need to get it translated.

11. Hong Kong

You can drive a car legally in Hong Kong for up to 1-year. You can also drive with an International DL.

12. Spain

As an Indian Driving Licence holder, you can drive through the roads of Spain for up to 6-months after you have registered for residency. Also, your DL needs to be English and should accompany an accepted ID proof.

13. Canada

The snow-capped mountains or the scenic road trip to the Rocky Mountains, where you drive through Canada, is certain to add unforgettable memories. Ensure you drive on the right side of the road unlike how you drive in India. The Indian DL is valid for 60 days after which you need to hold a Canadian Driving Licence to drive cars in the country.

14. Finland

You require health insurance to enter Finland and depending on insurance your Indian DL is valid between 6 to 12 months.

15. Bhutan

Indian nationals can drive a four-wheeler or a two-wheeler in Bhutan with their Indian Driving Licence. Ensure you get a vehicle permit to drive around the country.
