27 Dresses (2008)

While cynics may scoff at the tropes found within 27 Dresses – the couple who dislike each other at first, the obligatory lack of communication that causes the breakup, the moment the guy realizes he’s in love so he goes on a chase to get the girl, etc. - those beats are what its intended audience want to see. A better criticism is the ridiculously contrived and improbable premise and the fact that, in the end, the picture is forgettable.

Jane Nichols (Katherine Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times. In fact, she’s obsessed with weddings. While begrudgingly helping her younger sister Tess (Malin Åkerman) get ready for her own ceremony – during which she’ll be marrying Jane’s secret crush and boss, George (Edward Burns) – she meets cynical wedding columnist Kevin (James Marsden), who is secretly writing an article about the woman that is always a bridesmaid, but never a bride.

27 Dresses feels less like a movie and more like an excuse to have stuff happen. Jane has been instrumental in helping couples tie the knot since she was 8 years old… but what does she do for a living? She’s working in an advertising department. Her career path makes no sense, particularly considering she’s got no hobbies other than weddings. She’s crazy about them. She’s cutting out newspaper articles to keep, has held onto every single dress she’s ever worn as a bridesmaid, and keeps in touch with the women she helped along the years. That’s the first improbability of many we encounter. Some you can excuse because otherwise this plot wouldn’t happen. I wouldn't criticize Spider-Man for detailing the character’s origins, introducing a villain he’ll go up against, and ending in a big confrontation between the two. Similarly, I’m not going to tear apart 27 Dresses for following some of its genre's conventions… but my good will only goes so far. A woman like Katherine Heigl would hardly have trouble ensnaring a man. Compare this story to another written by Aline Brosh McKenna: The Devil Wears Prada. Where’s the wit, the subtlety, the subversions?

There’s not much else to say about 27 Dresses. The leads have decent chemistry. If you like seeing pretty outfits, there’s a nice montage of them about halfway though. These do not make up for the lack of romance, sweetness, or laughs you would expect from a rom-com. I suppose it could be entertaining to show this picture to easily enraged feminists, as every single woman in this film (save for Melora Hardin’s character) has no other ambitions in life besides finding a man, getting him to propose, and then living the rest of her life blissfully married. You might get some laughs if you jump through those hoops, but not many, and you'd have to suffer through it too, so who's winning, really?

The only thing memorable about 27 Dresses is its ridiculous premise. Even if you are the kind of person who would see beyond its flaws and enjoy the film, you won’t remember it a week after the credits roll. (Full-screen version on DVD, November 15, 2017)

Many major Western newspapers, magazines and broadcast media never hesitate to malign Israel on big issues—like how Israel is “mishandling” a war against terrorists in Gaza, how it is “illegally” building communities in Judea and Samaria, or how it is “threatening democracy” by reforming its broken judicial system. But equally harmful is the daily drumbeat of less obvious lies and innuendo embedded in the majority of reporting on Israel in such media as the New York Times, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the Associated Press (AP).

The biggest reason for falsehoods is “anti-Israel newsroom culture.” Some media, like the Times and AP are serial offenders. They publish falsehoods and biased analysis reflexively, while their management does nothing to stop it. Other media are guilty of errors through ignorance: Reporters offer “facts” they believe are true without checking them, and fact-checkers in busy, under-funded newsrooms are often non-existent.

In either case—politicized bias or outright ignorance—such a steady flood of anti-Israel reporting and analysis at major media amounts, at best, to journalistic malfeasance and at worst, to antisemitic hate speech.

Certain media outlets are just blatantly biased against Israel, period. A study conducted by noted Israeli journalist Lilac Sigan, for example, revealed that over the course of the last year and a half, the Times’ coverage of Israel was largely negative. For instance, out of the 148 articles the Times published about Israel in the first quarter of 2023, 67% were negative, while only 4.7% were positive. The remaining 28.3% were neutral.

Matti Friedman, a former AP writer, outlined his former employer’s anti-Israel culture in a 2014 essay. He wrote that when he and another reporter proposed to do a story on Palestinian corruption, his bureau chief told him this was “not the story,” even though AP covered Israeli corruption at length. Friedman also compiled 27 articles on the “moral failings of Israeli society” between Nov. 8 and Dec. 16, 2011, and noted that this seven-week tally of articles was higher than all stories significantly critical of Palestinian government and society published by his bureau in the preceding three years.

During the fighting in Gaza in 2008 and 2009, Friedman was forced to erase a significant detail from AP’s coverage—the fact Hamas fighters dressed as civilians were counted as part of the civilian death toll. He did this because of a threat to AP’s reporter in Gaza. He also noted that it was AP’s policy “ not to inform readers that the story is censored unless the censorship is Israeli.”

She wore this cream suit to Royal Ascot in June 1992, just 5 months later she wore it again to marry her sweetheart Tim 🥰 she also rewore the hat in the first photo at Royal Ascot, 30 years later, this year!

She wore this Teal coat dress to Royal Ascot in June 1991, then in 2005 she rewore it to her brothers wedding to Camilla.

Princess Anne wore this yellow number at Charles and Diana’s wedding in July 1981, 27 years later she wore it to her cousin, Lady Rose Gilman (née Windsor) wedding in July 2008

She has worn her look from Peter and Autumns wedding in 2008 to the RAF Centenary service at Westminster Abbey in 2018. LOOK AT HOW CUTE THEY ARE LINKING ARMS AT THE WEDDING 😭

She has worn her purple and green floral dress three times! At William and Catherine’s wedding in 2011, Ladies Day at Royal Ascot in 2012 and to a garden party at Buckingham Palace in 2015!

She rewore the look she wore for her daughter, Zara’s wedding in 2011 at Royal Ascot the following year but swapped her floral fascinator for a wide brimmed hat.

She rewore the emerald green dress she wore to Princess Eugenies wedding this year at Royal Ascot!

Most certainly one of her most favourite looks and one she keeps going back to is this yellow and blue coat dress with a matching hat. She has worn it five times in public at the Easter service in 2007, Royal Ascot in 2009, her cousin Lady Gabriella Kingston (née Windsor) wedding in 2019, in New Zealand in 2023 and to the Jersey Zoo in 2023.
