From the editors of that issue: It is more than a spring downpour that John Falter records in this New York City scene; it is a phenomenon the weather experts keep still about, probably because they can’t explain it, one of Nature’s little practical jokes. The day will be beautiful from the time thousands of men and women settle down for the day’s work until 4:55 in the afternoon; the sky smiling, not a cloud anywhere except a couple as innocent as cotton batting. But exactly at quitting time, at the moment best calculated to catch thousands between office and home, down comes the rain, like a sack of water thrown from a hotel window or a pan rigged over the door on April Fool’s Day. It quits just as punctually, when you reach home.

Mental illness is an exercise in time travel. Never backwards, unfortunately. It can make you lose time like you lose your socks in the washing machine. Disappearing acts are involved that even the best magicians can't pull off.

Days are shorter than they used to be. One explanation can be found in the time spent in bed. I have a natural sleep cycle of nine hours. I wish it were shorter, that I could run on less sleep, but I can't. With depression in the mix, there is at least a 30% increase that eats away at my awake time.

But there seem to be time skips in the day itself as well. I've just woken up, I swear, but somehow we're already three hours on. I just had lunch, but it's dinner time. I sat down for half an hour, and two hours have flown away like butterflies popping out of their cocoons. It's absolute bonkers mathematics that is not at all grounded in any reality I have ever known.

This translates seamlessly to a larger scale. I have no idea where the last decade has gone. I know I have spent it searching, and learning, and fighting, and somehow surviving, but I also feel like I'm no further in life than I was at 25. I've just been to the psychiatrist to talk about the meds I've been taking for ages, but that's actually already three years ago. Chronic suicidal ideation is a fairly new symptom of my experience of depression, I feel, but actually it's been around for the last four years.

Time just slips away. It's more ephemeral than the first years of a child's life, the ones you don't really remember. I try to hold on, but the months just hurtle into an impenetrable darkness, never to be seen again. Time is precious. Time is the stuff of life. And I'm losing it.

World Theatre Day

Magical places where stories come to life, the stage is a portal to other worlds, transporting audiences by the power of live performance.

Dating back a few thousand years, theatre is a unique and interesting part of culture that has certainly evolved over time. The word “theatre” gets its roots from an ancient Greek word that means “a place for seeing”, and that definition continues to be meaningful today. Even after so many centuries, theatre continues to be used as a way to not only tell stories and see things, but to make an impact on culture and society at large.

Whether writing and directing, producing and acting, creating beautiful costumes or doing lighting and scene design, theatre is a medium of art that requires a wide range of talented artists involved in a variety of ways. And World Theatre Day is here to show appreciation for those who give their time and talent to make the show go on.

History of World Theatre Day

World Theatre Day was initiated in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI) as a day to pay respect to and celebrate the beauty, creativity, hard work and artistry that goes into all of the aspects of theatre production. And it was meant to remind people about the great power that theatre can bring about, whether it is celebrated locally or globally.

Today, the World Theatre Day continues to be sponsored by ITI, which is the World Organization for Performing Arts, and the day also under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

In 2022, World Theatre Day celebrated its 60th anniversary with a worldwide online celebration. The Opera, Theatre and Festival Director, Peter Sellers, was the host of the event and offered the annual message. In addition, the celebration included a platform for theatrical expression that offered performances from 37 different emerging artists that hailed from countries all over the globe. These performances were recorded and broadcast on the ITI website so that they could be viewed from anywhere in the world.

World Theatre Day continues to be an important time to celebrate each year for those who support and love the theatre. Patrons of local theatre, costume designers, musicians, script-writers, set designers, actors and so many others will take delight in raising awareness for the observance of this day that is so vital to the arts.

1000 BC

Ancient Greek theatre begins

Plays for entertainment and education are based on ancient myths or legends.

1599

Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre opens

After the lease on their previous theatre wasn’t renewed, the Shakespeare company builds and opens their own theatre in London.

1600s

Kabuki Theatre begins in Japan

This form of Japanese dance-drama becomes known for its heavily stylized performances.

1735

First theatre opens on Broadway

Theatrical activity begins on New York City’s famous Broadway.

No matter if it is a comedy, tragedy, musical, drama or even an opera, viewing a theatre performance live and in-person is the best way to pay homage to this amazing form of art.

Supporting the arts locally is a great way to celebrate and raise awareness for the day. It might be a play put on by an elementary school or high school, or it might be a community theatre. Even better than showing support by buying tickets to just one show, go ahead and enjoy the fun of season tickets for the whole family!

In 1921, Baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis suspended Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel for "barnstorming" after the Yankees' World Series victory. On March 27, 1922, during spring training, they all shook hands and made up. God knows what Landis would think of today's celebrations, both on and off the field.

Graphic design artist Moataz Abu Sakran/ @moatazart has provided extensive documentation of the genocide against Gaza. His photos and videos have been used—often without credit—by major media outlets, and his posts are featured on this blog regularly.

Moataz and his wife and baby girl are trapped in the vicinity of Al-Shifa Hospital complex. The area has was under complete siege for 13 days, and made life even more difficult and dangerous than before. In addition to the physical violence of the siege, the occupation’s famine has made food extremely scarce—Moataz and Mariam can no longer find milk and nutritious food for baby Maria.

They were able to raise enough funds to begin the paperwork involved in evacuating to Egypt, but exorbitant processing fees have totally depleted the money they had reserved to find a place to stay in Egypt. They need funds to procure food and shelter while they rebuild their lives in Egypt (God willing), otherwise they will be homeless and destitute.
