My Review
Jake motherf*ccin Gyllenhaal. A legendary actor just doing what he does best. His highly alternative character could not be represented better. One of the most relatable fictional characters to myself personally. I love him.... And myself...... "Narcissist!!!!!" They screamed. Very engaging script. Incredibly beautiful cast. Mesmerizing story. 10/10

The 100 Best Satirical Movies of All Time
Tumblr media
So, this was a tricky one, and I'm not sure I entirely succeeded.
Satire is a quite specific strain of comedy that uses humour to criticize and attack hypocrisy, injustice, stupidity and pomposity in an attempt to improve society by lampooning it: another way to put it is that it's parody with a point. And while many comedies will have satirical moments, it can be debatable as to whether they have anything meaningful to say as a whole, or change as their aim. And many films that explicitly have ONLY change as their aim just aren't very funny at ALL, and so end up being nothing more than propaganda.
So, there's some grey area and because of that I'm sure I will have included some films some people will feel don't meet those requirements, and overlooked others that do.
On top of that, there's also the challenge of knowing how best to rank them: for their objective quality as films, how funny they are or how well they succeed at hitting their targets?
I've generally gone with the latter, and very loosely ordered them more on their worth as satire than their objective quality as films or number of belly laughs, but I will try to revise the list as more come to mind or I remove some that, upon further reflection, I don't feel make the grade.

Which actors and actresses have had the worst snub at the Oscars?
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Jake Gyllenhaal, the snubbed?
The year is 2014. The movie is Nightcrawler. The performance is staggering.
Tumblr media
Nightcrawler opened to rapturous reviews, with much of the praise being reserved for Dan Gilroy's serrated script and Gyllenhaal's demented, diabolical, and devilishly pulsating performance.
It was a masterwork.
And it was widely recognized as such. Gyllenhaal was nominated for almost all of the awards that serve as precursors to the Oscars – The SAG Awards, The Golden Globes, The BAFTAs, among others.
But come The Academy Awards, Gyllenhaal's name was missing, against all rhyme or reason.
Granted, there are other variables that go into an Oscar nomination than the mere quality of the performance; winning or even getting nominated isn't always based entirely on merit.
Tumblr media
However, even accounting for the campaigning and the hand-shaking, how can performances such as Gyllenhaal's in Nightcrawler slip through the cracks? It is confounding.
Some claim the Oscars are dying, that they don't matter. I beg to differ; they have always mattered, they matter now, and they will continue to matter.
That being said, decisions such as these do rankle.
Gyllenhaal's work in Nightcrawler wasn't just one of the five best performances in his category; it was one of the five best performances of the entire year across all categories.
He was thoroughly spectacular.
As Lou Bloom, a freelance videographer with an absent moral compass, Gyllenhaal brings a manic yet deeply unsettling energy to proceedings.
Tumblr media
His ability to channel his deeply troubled character's frustrations and anguish while simultaneously maintaining a veneer of charisma left me astounded.
Gyllenhaal is channeling electricity in Nightcrawler, and it's a sight to behold. And to see him miss out to run-of-the-mill biopic performances was genuinely crushing.
These were the nominees for Best Actor that year:
Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game
Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything
Steve Carell in Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper in American Sniper
Michael Keaton in Birdman
With due respect to the above actors, Gyllenhaal was simply operating on another level altogether.
His performance is worth mentioning in the same breath as Robert De Niro’s in Taxi Driver. That's the level.
Tumblr media
But here's the deal, De Niro didn't win Best Actor for Taxi Driver either. But his performance will be continued to talked about for decades to come.
And when posterity looks back on the defining performances of the 2010s, you best believe that Gyllenhaal's sociopathic paparazzo will be on the list.

Ninja Turtles got me inside the comic book shop, but once inside, the X-Men kept me there. Specifically, Claremont’s run on Uncanny X-Men. I jumped on at issue 244 (which is a really weird issue to jump on) and I immediately started collecting backwards. In the end, I collected back to 170, which was just before Rogue joined. But my favorite line-up was always with Wolvie, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Rogue, and Punk Rock Storm. Before Kitty and Nightcrawler got poached by Excalibur (which I also read and loved). I hear Nightcrawler is back, and getting some shine these days, but I can’t say I have any idea what the hell is going on in the X-verse anymore. I wrote and drew a Marvel Knights: X-Men mini-series around 2014 and I gotta say, the best compliment I ever got about it, was that it felt like a Claremont X-Men story. I guess, in hindsight, it would have been weird if it didn’t feel that way! - #nightcrawler #xmen #marvelcomics #charactersketch #comicartist #comicartwork #comicartists #comicartistsonins https://www.instagram.com/p/Cel5WiAKNdO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The complete list of films featured in 2021′s “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 403 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This number is up from last year’s count of 327 and is the second-highest number of films I have ever featured in this marathon (behind the 410 films from 2016). Despite the number, this remains only a fraction of the nearly 5,000 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. This year’s marathon was harder to plan than usual due to the fact it was presented in alphabetical order - with the exception of any write-ups I did.

Movie Recommendations
since quarantine started, I think I've watched more movies in the past three weeks than I have in the past 6 months. here are some of my favorites
The Lobster (2015)
dir: Yorgos Lanthimos
available on: Netflix
fascinating concept, executed well, beautifully shot and a gripping ending that i still sometimes think about. one of those movies i looked up what happened at the end because i wanted someone elses opinon. (aka, it’s up to interpretation).
Tumblr media
Her (2013)
dir: Spike Jonze
available on: Netflix
one of my favorites I saw during quarantine. thoroughly engaging throughout regardless of it’s longer runtime. beautifully shot, edited and great performances by everyone involved.
Tumblr media
Booksmart (2019)
dir: Olivia Wilde
available on: Hulu
this movie shocked me with how much I ended up enjoying it. i was nervous at first, especially about the likeability of the characters, but they got me at the end. If you are looking for an upbeat, feel good, and funny movie, this is it.
Tumblr media
Boy (2010)
dir: Taika Waititi
available on: amazon prime
my favorite movie ever made. Taika Waititi is a genius. he’s a master at mixing emotion with humor without it feeling like he’s trying too hard. beautifully shot and written, very underrated movie.
Tumblr media
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
dir: Taika Waititi/Jermaine Clement
please watch this if you want to laugh. one of the funniest movies i’ve ever seen. i think we can all agree that peytr is the best character.
Tumblr media
Submarine (2011)
dir:  Richard Ayoade
rewatching this movie during quarantine makes me remember why it was my favorite movie for so many years. it may be a coming of age story, but it's somehow so much more than others i’ve seen. plus, alex turner does the soundtrack. great film. love u Richard.
Tumblr media
The Way Way Back (2013)
dir: Jim Rash/Nat Faxon
rewatched for the first time since 2013. Sam Rockwell’s character is easily the best even though he may be overly obnoxious at times. unfortunately, the main character is less likable than the supporting characters, but it is quite a lovable film. stars toni collette, allison janney, and steve carell too.
Tumblr media
Nightcrawler (2014)
dir: Dan Gilroy
available on: amazon prime
watched this days ago and still can’t decide on my feelings about it. gripping and deeply unsettling. Jake Gyllenhaal delivers (as usual).
Tumblr media
Moonlight (2016)
dir: Barry Jenkins
available on: netflix
this movie is beautiful. from the way the story is told, shot, and acted, it's great. deserves all of the hype it received upon coming out. longer runtime, so be prepared.
Tumblr media
Bo Burnham: Make Happy (2016)
dir: Bo Burnham, Christopher Storer
available on: netflix
this is a comedy special. since watching it when released, I haven’t stopped thinking about it. one of the smartest, most thought-provoking pieces of music I have ever listened to (just the last song, it has me fucked up to this day).
Tumblr media
Chronicle of a Summer (1961)
dir: Jean Rouch/Edgar Morin
watched for a class and was stunned by how much I was enamored with and intrigued by it. follows ethnographers asking the question, “are you happy?”. the whole movie is in French!
Tumblr media
Skeleton Twins (2014)
dir: Craig Johnson
available on: Hulu
wanted to watch since i heard about it. shocked by Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig’s performances and the emotional storyline of the film overall. may seem like a backhanded compliment, but I was shocked by how good this film was.
Tumblr media
Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
dir: Taika Waititi
available on: hulu
if there’s any movie you should watch during this quarantine it’s any of Taika Waititi’s films. he delivers every time with a comedic, heartfelt, and unique story.
Tumblr media
The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)
dir: Rob Burnett
available on: Netflix
i was pleasantly surprised by this movie. really great performance by Craig Roberts. i too would like to go on a week long roadtrip with Paul Rudd. i think i’ll pass on the part where he wipes my ass, though.
Tumblr media
The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2020)
dir: Joe Talbot
available on: amazon prime
this movie isn’t really plot heavy, but it’s still beautifully done and facinating. found myself not really caring about parts of the plot when watching, i just enjoyed it.
Tumblr media
Frank (2014)
dir: Lenny Abrahamson
available on: YouTube (for free as of May 2020)
a weird movie, and i can’t say for sure if i am ashamed to have liked the last song they wrote on the spot. i think the character design of the helmet is enough of a reason to watch.
Tumblr media
Trainspotting (1996)
dir: Danny Boyle
young ewan mcgregor was enough of a reason to get me to watch this movie. a look at drug use in young adult/adult culture in scotland during the 90′s. and it will always go down as the movie i remember that noel gallagher/oasis said no to the soundtrack to because he thought it was about literally train-spotting. another irvine welsh novel made into a movie (first was filth)
Tumblr media
T2L Trainspotting (2017)
director: Danny Boyle
i didn’t realize there was a sequel when I watched the first and I wasn’t really expecting anything much from this. i don’t know if it’s just my love for ewan mcgregor, but I really liked this movie. the soundtrack is just as good as the first, too.
Tumblr media
Paris is Burning (1990)
dir: Jennie Livingston
available on: netflix
one of my favorite pieces of film of all time, probably my favorite documentary out there. i think it’s probably one of the only things i’ve ever considered as ‘essential viewing’
Tumblr media
Inside (2021)
dir: Bo Burnham
available on: netflix
one of my favorite things to come out of quarantine. I have missed bo and his content so much it was amazing to see him come back in such a raw and touching way. I've had the soundtrack on repeat for the past two weeks now, highly recommend.
Tumblr media
Filth (2013)
dir: Jon S. Baird
honestly, one of the strangest movies I've ever seen, but I still enjoyed it. it’s quite crass, so be prepared for some rather vulgar and explicit content. plus, has james mcavoy, which is always a plus.
Tumblr media
Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 (2021)
dir: James Acaster
available on: Vimeo (for purchase)
another comedy special! besides “Make Happy” this is one of my favorite comedy specials I have ever seen. James is fucking fantastic and the two hour runtime somehow seems too short.
Tumblr media
Promising Young Woman (2021)
dir: Emerald Fennell
this one has had people conflicted. I enjoyed the movie (especially with the shock that bo burnham was in it, also, a great casting choice) and honestly.... quite enjoyed the ending. highly recommend, I was engaged throughout!

Dune Part 2: Major Actors They Could Cast in the Sequel
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains Dune mythology spoilers.
After some uncertainty as to whether admired French Canadian director Denis Villeneuve would be able to complete his mission to adapt Dune into more than one movie, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have struck a deal for Dune: Part Two, and there are now three major roles that need to be cast for it: Emperor Shaddam IV, Princess Irulan and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, who will all be key to the next part of the story when it’s released theatrically on October 20, 2023.
Though no casting news has yet been forthcoming, we’ve got a pretty good idea of the kind of actors who could slip into those three roles with ease…
Emperor Shaddam IV
Jake Gyllenhaal
During his relatively short and spectacular career thus far, director Denis Villeneuve has developed a small rotating troupe of actors he likes to work with. One he’s returned to several times is the star of his first Hollywood movie, Prisoners. That 2013 film came out as Jake Gyllenhaal was pivoting away from traditional leading men roles to some of the darkest and most fascinating work of his career, which included that nihilistic noir as well as Gyllenhaal and Villeneuve’s follow-up, the equally bleak Enemy (2013).
Teaming again with Gyllenhaal as the Padishah Emperor of the Imperium and head of House Corrino thus seems apt. Folks tend to forget that the spice melange slows aging and expands a lifespan, which might explain the youthful appearance of Paul’s parents as played by Oscar Isaac and Rebecca Ferguson. Gyllenhaal could continue that trend and bring a preening arrogance and sense of entitlement to the most powerful man in the Known Universe. After all, he already embodied peak grievance culture in Enemy and Nightcrawler (2014). Now imagine a whole galaxy having to bend to that neediness! – DC
Michael Stuhlbarg
The soft-spoken Michael Stuhlbarg often opts for troubled or anxious characters who could flip on a dime, and that’s just one of the reasons we think he could be in the running for the plum role of Emperor Shaddam IV in Dune: Part Two. We heard a lot of talk about the dastardly Emperor in the first movie, but one of the major ways that Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation differed from David Lynch’s version of the story was to have the character be spoken about but never seen, leaving the audience to assume he’ll show up with gusto in the sequel as Paul Atreides begins his rise to power.
Like Gyllenhaal, Stuhlbarg has worked with Villeneuve before in 2016’s Arrival and also, crucially, Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name, where the two actors shared an unforgettable scene in a masterpiece of cinema that garnered them a string of awards nominations. Though it seems more likely that Dune: Part Two will cast a more A-List actor as the Emperor, don’t write off Stuhlbarg just yet. He may be the sequel’s dark horse. – KH
Princess Irulan
Elle Fanning
Princess Irulan is a difficult role to cast because she’ll likely have very little screen time but must communicate a lot in it: a regal sense of superiority, an ethereal otherworldliness, but also a cunning, scholarly intellect. There are several leading actresses who could inhabit that but perhaps because of her recent work on Hulu’s The Great, Elle Fanning springs to my mind as among the best choices.
As with her depiction of Catherine the Great, she can bring an internalized intelligence to the screen in short order while certainly also playing a character who expects she’s worthy of ruling the universe. Additionally, should Villeneuve ever be able to direct an adaptation of Dune Messiah, Fanning could quite easily portray the rising sense of anxiety and cracking fragility that will eventually come to the universe’s great historian. – DC
Maya Hawke
Twenty-three-year-old Maya Hawke shows no signs of slowing down, and the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke may well be on a path that sees her achieve roles beyond those that either of her parents have managed to snag over their long decades in the industry. Hawke tends to stand out in whatever film or TV show she shows up in, and although she’s best known to most as the sarcastic, ice cream-slinging Robin Buckley in Netflix’s flagship sci-fi series Stranger Things, the fact that Quentin Tarantino is championing her burgeoning career will likely work in her favor as she begins to strategically select meatier roles.
As Princess Irulan, Hawke would bring a brittle, cunning and thoughtful touch to the woman who may be required to marry Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides as he ascends to power in Dune: Part Two. Should the story continue beyond the upcoming sequel and Paul commits to starting a family with his beloved concubine Chani, Hawke’s increasingly desperate and envious Irulan could also sway the audience to grant some sympathy for the character, despite her twisted deeds later in the Dune series. – KH
Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen
Tom Holland
The hardest of the three major new roles to cast, Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen is essentially Paul Atreides’ dark doppelgänger; the man he could’ve become if raised under the vile Baron Harkonnen’s tutelage. And given his predilection for indulging in gladiatorial fights where his enslaved foes have been handicapped to lose, one half wishes they could de-age Gladiator’s Joaquin Phoenix for the part.
Alas, that is not to be, and one has to find the anti-Timothée Chalamet for the role. In terms of appearance that wouldn’t seem to immediately suggest Tom Holland. However, the pair have an amusing shared history having gone after the same roles in the past, including Spider-Man, and they’ve both worked opposite Zendaya. Holland would obviously bring in an even larger young fanbase to the sequel, and one can speculate that the actor would enjoy playing a right sneaky bastard after so many years as a happy-go-lucky do-gooder in the public zeitgeist. Portraying a nasty piece of work in a major franchise would be a good way to shake off the pop culture cobwebs for the actor, and give Dune: Part Two an interesting dynamic between two of the more popular leading men under the age of 27. – DC
Fred Hechinger
Many wouldn’t have been able to pick Fred Hechinger out of a line-up before the young actor exploded onto the scene this year. But the combined releases of The Woman in the Window, the Fear Street trilogy and HBO’s The White Lotus have catapulted him into the spotlight, and that’s set to continue in 2022 with the highly anticipated and much-contested Pam & Tommy on Hulu, which charts the relationship between Pamela Anderson (Lily James) and Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) following the release of their infamous sex tape. Hechinger is playing grimy porn king Seth Warshavsky in what’s sure to be a revoltingly memorable role.
Having broken out in Bo Burnham’s acclaimed indie Eighth Grade, Hechinger has an acute softness to him tinged with a certain edge that’s hard to pin down, but that some have described as an “old soul”, and he most reminds us of Michael Pitt in his Funny Games and The Dreamers era. He could be an unexpected but perfect choice for the twisted and arrogant Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two. Plus, he’s really mastered the old “curly fringe in the eyes” look, so he could go toe-to-toe (or hair-to-hair) with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul in the sequel. – KH

Counting Down My Top 10 Underrated Films Of The Decade
Let me start by saying it’s a fucking miracle I made this list because I’ve switched and changed it so many times I got whiplash. I really hope you love this list because it took months and months to make this. It’s so sad writing this because I love these movies so much I wish everyone saw them! I decided to cut this list down to ten because I might take the left over movies and throw them on a list in 2020 because I can’t focus on this to save my life. I’m posting this on Christmas Eve as a gift to all of you who follow this blog. To be honest these last like 4 months my mental health has been so bad I’ve barely left the house so this is one of the only things that’s been keeping me together. Anyone who reads this blog, you give me a reason to live and create and I love influencing y’all to watch my shows lmao. Happy holidays to anyone who’s having a shit time at home or has lost a loved one or has been having a bad time mentally. This list may not be the best to lift spirits but my top animated of the decade probably will which you can read here! Love y’all so much hope you enjoy your present! Usually I would say there are spoilers but since many people haven’t watched these I’m going to put where to watch them so enjoy these amazing but very vaguely described movies! Kisses! Oh and one last thing, the average Rotten Tomatoes score between all these movies is 85.2%!
10. Atomic Blonde (2017)

I saw this in theaters and it was quite the experience with all the twist and turns this film has. Atomic Blonde not only has a top tier cast but it’s also one of the best spy movies ever made. I don’t wanna give anything away but can you really go wrong with Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, Sofia Butella, and Bill Skarsgård? Don’t think so!
Where to watch: Anywhere you can buy or rent films
9. Anna Karenina (2012)
Tumblr media
Directed by Joe Wright, the brilliant mind behind Atonement, Anna Karenina brings the famed novel to life in this romantic and dazzling rendition. I really thought this movie would be racking up the awards when it came out but it didn’t. Either way this film about a 19th century woman (Keira Knightley) who has a lustrous affair with a cavalry officer (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is hot and just beautiful to look at. If you like period piece films you’ll love this!

8. Widows (2018)
Tumblr media
This movie about a heist gone wrong that leaves the men’s widows to finish the job should’ve won an Oscar for ANYTHING. I mean Viola Davis running a lady gang to finish their husbands crimes!?! The FLAVOR!!! Please watch it there’s one scene in it with Daniel Kaluuya that is literally the definition of CINEMA.
Where to watch: HBO Now, HBO Go, and anywhere you can buy or rent films
7. Annihilation (2018)
Tumblr media
Ok I can’t say much about this movie besides that it’s sci-fi and that it has Oscar winning actress Natalie Portman movie in it but please please please PLEASE watch this movie! It’s one of the best sci-fi films I’ve ever seen and it’s honestly one of the best films that came out in 2018! I wrote a little about it here!
Where to watch: Hulu and anywhere you can buy or rent films
6. Nightcrawler (2014)
Tumblr media
Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a news reporter who likes to get a little too close to the action. It’s insane to watch just how far he goes to get a story. He is actually a sociopath and Jake should’ve won or at least been nominated for an Oscar for this role. It may be one of his best performances ever!
Where to watch: Amazon Prime and anywhere you can buy or rent films
5. Prisoners (2013)
Tumblr media
When two girls go missing a father (Hugh Jackman) does everything in his power to get them back. The ending of this film is so fucking annoying but genius I still argue about it wigg my friend claire. Please let me know if you know what I’m talking about! Also this movie should fuking have 7 Oscars!!!
Where to watch: Anywhere you can buy or rent films
4. Ex Machina (2014)
Tumblr media
When a programmer (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a contest to spend the week with the company’s genius CEO (Oscar Isaac) he gets a lot more than he bargained for when he meets Ava (Alicia Vikander) the robot. All I’m gonna say is it should be illegal to have not seen this movie. Like should be a federal crime. I know this is on Netflix so watch it NOW!
Where to watch: Netflix and anywhere you can buy or rent films
3. Logan (2017)
Tumblr media
The last chapter in Wolverine’s tale is not only riveting but surprisingly heartbreaking. I watched this on the plane ride to Vegas and I sobbed I ain’t gonna lie! If you love the X-Men you’ll absolutely love, or maybe hate, this Oscar winning super hero movie.
Where to watch: Anywhere you can buy or rent films
2. The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Tumblr media
It’s kind of hard to believe that a movie with Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling didn’t get much buzz but here I am giving it the justice it deserves! This movie that’s basically a lesson in karma and breaking the cycle of familial bullshit is one of the best and most heartbreaking films I’ve ever seen. It also features a career defining performance by Dane Dehaan. I won’t give anything away but I suggest y’all watch pronto!
Where to watch: Netflix and anywhere you can buy or rent films
1. Looper (2012)
Tumblr media
This time traveling mindfuck of a movie never left me the second I finished it. I really wish I saw this in theaters cause I feel like it would have been epic. I don’t wanna give anything away because I really want people to watch it but if you love time travel, twists and Joseph Gordon Levitt this is the movie for you. Looper is number one because I’ve been begging people to watch it for about 7 years now.

I have a Nightcrawler Facebook group for anyone who uses it, done a poll recently for which Nightcrawler solo series is the best.
If link doesn't work it's called The Nightcrawler Fan Club (made in 2014 as there's probably multiple ones)

Jake Gyllenhaal, who turns 40 today, has been in more good films than you think. A few of his sleepers:
Joe Nast in Moonlight Mile. D: Brad Silberberg (2002). Gyllenhaal is the fiancée of a murdered girl who moves in with the girl’s parents (Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon) during the grieving process which becomes complicated by both a secret he’s been keeping and his falling in love with someone else. The actor both plays to and pulls against his nice-boy looks in this story about how the best thing for everyone is the last thing anyone needs.
Colter Stevens in Source Code. D: Duncan Jones (2011). An army pilot who wakes up in a different identity on a Chicago commuter train which is immediately blown up then wakes up again and is sent back as part of an experimental time-travel experiment. In this mind-bending sci-fi thriller, Gyllenhall plays Stevens as confused as the audience is, and who realizes more than his life depends on putting things together faster than we do.
Louis Bloom in Nightcrawler. D: Dan Gilroy (2014). A young thief, gets a camera and roams the city shooting (sometimes causing) accidents and manipulating criminals and cops to get violent footage, and then sells it to LA news stations. Gyllenhaal lost thirty pounds just so Lou would look “hungry” and plays him as an almost literal news junkie whose desire for scoops leads him to do unspeakable things. He also plays him as the face of American tabloid journalism.

A Moderately Long Series Of Reviews For Every Movie I Watched In January
Some serious, some less serious. Fairly spoiler free
January 1st- Spider-Man (2002)
Truly the only way to bring in the New Year. If starting off 2020 watching the shit show that is IT Chapter 2 was a mistake, then surely this means 2021 will be okay. Willem Defoe slaps, bring him back for the new movie instead of Tobey Maguire.
7/10
January 2nd- The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020)
Alright, this movie is pretty goddamn good alright? Sacha Baron Cohen steals every scene he is in, and he’s in most of the movie so it’s a real treat. Also, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is SO great in this movie. Check it outie, even if you don’t like the movie itself, it tells a massively important story that everyone should know.
9/10
January 2nd- The Vast of Night (2020)
This movie is pretty fun, and definitely enjoyable if you like 60s ish Sci-fi alien movies. It is partially mirrored after old radio drama like War of the Worlds, so it’s pretty dialogue based, so if that’s not your thing you might not like it as much. Sometimes the dialogue itself can seem a bit overly snappy, but that was really my only major complaint. Two alien thumbs up from me.
7/10
January 3rd- Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
Actually a masterpiece, and probably my favorite Kubrick film so far. Holds my favorite line of dialogue in any movie “Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is a war room.” Absolute fucking genius.
10/10
January 5th- The Great Gatsby (2013)
Actually a huge letdown, considering Romeo+Juliet is a movie I absolutely adore. Having just read the book for school, I was at odds with myself on whether or not I actually liked the book, and I was hoping the movie would help clear some of my thought up, but I just really didn’t like it. I went on to write a pretty critical essay for my English class, so maybe I just don’t like the Great Gatsby as a whole. Please don’t kill me.
5/10
January 8th- Barry Lyndon (1975)
A masterpiece, but you already knew that.
10/10
January 9th- The Social Network (2010)
Wow, this movie is good. I had a little game for myself where I would try to guess which Winklevoss twin was Armie Hammer, until about halfway through when I realized he was both of them. Imagine my shock when two days later I learned he was a cannibal.
9/10
January 12th- Nightcrawler (2014)
I will shout the fact that Jake Gyllenhaal got snubbed at the Oscars from rooftops, he was awesome in this movie. That being said, I don’t know how often I’ll go back to it as the movie is great at making you feel very gross. It’s an icky movie in the best possible way.
8/10
January 16th- His House (2020)
I got pretty desensitized to horror pretty early on, but this movie is pretty goddamn terrifying. I am looking forward for anything Remi Weekes makes in the future, he’s clearly good at horror. With a genre like horror that has been seemingly run into the ground in recent years, this movie is refreshing in the way that it’s actually good, and also the way it makes a coldness go down my spine when I watch it.
8/10
January 17th- Zombieland: Double Tap (2019)
A good word to describe this movie would be pointless. There was no reason this movie needed to come out. We get a few good chuckles in, but I don’t really see the point. Just watch the first one.
4/10
January 17th- The Dirt (2019)
If you wanna watch a bad movie, look no further. There is no dirt in this movie, so right off the bat we have false advertising. I don’t ever wanna see a man snort ants off the ground ever again.
2/10
January 23rd- Superbad (2007)
This movie FUCKS. If you’re looking for a good high-school comedy, just watch this, it’s better than Pulp Fiction.
8/10
January 26th- Full Metal Jacket (1987)
If you couldn’t tell, I went a bit hog wild for Kubrick this month. That being said, this movie reminds me of those sweet times in middle school gym class. That’s actually a good comparison for this movie, it’s like middle school.
9/10
January 29th- The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Shameful that it took me this long to watch this movie. There’s something so wholly beautiful about this movie. The way it shows people, I love it. I have trouble putting it into words, but I love movies that make me fall in love with humanity.
9/10
