Hamilton: Ferrari F1 move wouldn’t have happened without Vasseur
Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that his move to the Ferrari Formula 1 team in 2025 wouldn’t have happened without the presence of team principal Fred Vasseur.
Hamilton drove for the Frenchman’s ASM F3 team in 2005, winning the European title. The following year he graduated to GP2 with Vasseur’s rebranded ART GP outfit, again winning the championship, before moving into F1 with McLaren. Inevitably, when Vasseur joined Ferrari at the start of 2023 there was speculation that he might attempt to leverage his good relationship with Hamilton in order to lure him away from Mercedes. That’s what eventually transpired, with the pieces falling into place early this year and Hamilton opting out of the second year of his contract. "I've got a great relationship with Fred," said Hamilton when asked by Autosport if Vasseur was the only person who could have convinced him to join Ferrari. "Obviously I raced with him in F2 and we had amazing success in F3, and also in GP2. That's really where the foundation of our relationship started. We always remained in touch. I thought that was going to be an amazing team manager at some stage and progress to F1, but at the time, he wasn't interested in that. It was really cool to see him step into the Alfa team. Then, when he got the job at Ferrari, I was just so happy for him. I think just the stars aligned. I think it really wouldn't have happened without him, so I'm really grateful and really excited about the work that he's doing there."
Hamilton stressed that when he first re-signed for Mercedes in August, he was still fully committed to staying with the team for two further years; however, he changed his mind over the winter. "Obviously in the summer I signed, and obviously at that time I saw my future with Mercedes," he said. "But an opportunity came up at the end of the year and I decided to take it. I feel like it was obviously the hardest decision I think I've ever had to make. I've been with Mercedes, I think it's like 26 years they've supported me, and we've had an absolutely incredible journey together. We've created history within the sport, and it's something I take a lot of pride in, and I'm very proud of what we've achieved. But I think, ultimately, I'm writing my story. And I felt like it was time to start a new chapter." Shortly after the news was announced, Hamilton said on social media that it was a "childhood dream" to one day drive for Ferrari. Expanding on the appeal of the team, he said: "For every driver growing up, watching the history, watching Michael Schumacher in his prime, I think probably all of us sit in our garage and see the screen pop up and you see the driver in the red car and you wonder what it would be like to be surrounded by the red. You go to the Italian GP and you see a sea of red Ferrari fans, and you can only stand in awe of that. It's a team that's not had like huge success, really, since mostly from Michael's days, but since 2007. I saw it as a huge challenge. Without a doubt, even as a kid, I used to play in [computer game] GP2 as Michael in that car, as my foot in that car. It definitely is a dream, and I'm really, really excited about it." Hamilton also confirmed he has never been to Ferrari’s Maranello base. "I have not," he said. "I bought my first Ferrari in 2010 I think, as a present to myself. I don't have it anymore. But I didn't get to go during that time. Being with Mercedes, I didn't think it was a good look to go at the time." Asked if he was planning to learn Italian, he said: "In all these years, I've not managed to learn any other languages, but of course I will definitely try. I do remember when I was karting in Italy, and I was able to pick up a few lines, and so hopefully that will come back to me pretty quickly." Hamilton was also keen to point out that he remains committed to Mercedes for 2024. "Just to go back to the new chapter, this chapter is still not finished," he said. "I'm still 100% focused on delivering for this team this year and trying to finish on a high. That's a big, big goal for me and the team, and I have absolute faith in everyone in the team. What we've done so far I think is great, so I really hope that we are somehow able to close the gap to the Red Bull."

came across this 2005 article from a monterey paper and am loving these vivid descriptions:
“Valentino Rossi is a charmer, a cutie, and an utterly intimidating racer who has dominated GP racing since he was 17. He has been world champion in his class for six of the past nine years. He is now the reigning world champion in the MotoGP class—the fastest category of motorcycle racing—and has been for four years running.”
“Valentino Rossi looks like a devilishly handsome 11-year-old; he is all of 26. He earns around $6 million per year on the track, plus another $1.64 million for his endorsement of the Italian brewer Peroni’s Nastro Azzuro (“Blue Ribbon”) beer. He travels the world parrying the advances of gorgeous women with an air of bemused, comic insouciance.”
“There is a legend about Valentino, about how he came to ride for Yamaha. Nobody will ever know for sure if the story is really about money or about something else, but it may be a remarkable tale of pride, arrogance, and even valor.”

The Schumacher Dragon: Michael
In August 2009, when Michael was working towards a comeback, it was reported in a Chinese newspaper that he had ordered 3 "Chinese style" helmets. The article reported that Michael had said, "When I first went to China, a newspaper drew a dragon as my symbol." Later that year, he also spoke about this helmet in the lead up to ROC, which was held in Beijing that year.
However, the first glimpse of the dragon logo appears to have been in July 2004. At the German GP, Michael was seen with a temporary tattoo on his right forearm with the logo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He would win the 2004 WDC two races later, at Spa. Following that at the Italian GP in Monza, the dragon would appear as a logo for the first time, on the back of his baseball cap.
Tumblr media
The week after that marked the occasion of the first Chinese GP in Shanghai. It was here that the dragon logo would appear on his helmet for the first time. It appeared on the top of the helmet, temporarily replacing his seven stars, as well as on either side of the helmet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This initial iteration of the dragon logo had, in addition to the large “力”, the character for “strength”, four characters - "迈舒马赫", which roughly translates to "Mike Schumacher". This would later be removed.
The dragon would not be seen on his helmet throughout 2005, but Michael continued using it on his personal merchandise. It featured both on the back of his cap, and also on his drivers shoes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This continued into 2006, where it again featured on his caps.
Tumblr media
However, Michael also opted to subtly incorporate the dragon back into his helmet design for 2006. This new design featured two large dragons, as well as the names of his family in Chinese (Mick “米克” and Michael “米克尔” on the right, and Gina “吉娜” and Corinna “科琳娜” on the left).
Tumblr media
A special version of this helmet was commissioned for his final race for Ferrari, and to mark his first retirement, this time with the dragon and his family’s names featured in gold. It also included a list of his race victories around the top of the helmet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During his retirement in 2007-2008, Michael was still frequently seen around the track in his new capacity as an adviser to Ferrari. He continued featuring the dragon as part of his personal branding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michael also tested for Ferrari during both seasons to help with development. During at least one of these testing sessions, Ferrari had it placed on the engine cover.
Tumblr media
As mentioned earlier, Michael was planning a return to F1 in 2009 to replace the injured Felipe Massa, though that was ultimately called off due to a neck injury suffered earlier that year. However, pictures from when he was karting in August 2009 showed the “Chinese style” helmet he had planned to use. It was very similar to the helmet design he last used in 2006, but with details in white instead.
Tumblr media
Michael made a return to F1 with Mercedes, driving with them from 2010 to 2012. He used pretty much the same helmet design throughout this time, with 2010 featuring the more subtle red version of the helmet:
Tumblr media
And 2011 featuring more or less the same design in silver:
Tumblr media
2011 was also Michael’s 20th year in F1. For this, a specially designed gold-plated helmet was commissioned and used at the Belgian GP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He returned to the silver dragon for the rest of his time in F1, with the exception of one more custom helmet made to commemorate his 300th F1 race at the Belgian GP in 2012:
Tumblr media
Michael also continued to feature the dragon on both his shoes and gloves, seen here in 2010 and 2011:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’ll notice that for a brief period of time, Michael went back to the original iteration of the logo featuring the additional four Chinese characters, "迈舒马赫", translating to his name.
Although Michael retired at the end of the 2012 season, that was not yet the end of the dragon in motorsport. Michael used it one last time on his race suit at the Race of Champions in 2012, which he and Sebastian Vettel won for Team Germany.
Tumblr media
Apparently a post is limited to 30 images, so on to Part 2: Mick!

Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix
Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix Christian Horner has enjoyed remarkable success during his 18-year career Red Bull are in search of their 14th consecutive win at the Italian Grand Prix Horner is the sole team principal left standing from Red Bull’s debut year in 2005 By Tum Balogun For Mailonline Updated: 04:58 EDT, 31 August 2023 Red Bull principal Christian Horner reckons the current generation of F1 team managers are 'very short-termist' compared to their more illustrious predecessors.  The 49-year-old has enjoyed a long and successful career in the sport that has seen him lead the Austrian team to five Constructors' championships all while competing against some of the sport's most famous bosses.  Horner is the sole team principal left standing from Red Bull’s 2005 debut and he was keen to identify what separates some of the current faces from the likes of Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley, Jean Todt, Ron Dennis and Flavio Briatore.  'I had the privilege of seeing up close how some legendary leaders were operating when I first came into the sport,' he told Planetf1.com. 'Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley were running the business very tightly. 'But then there was Ron Dennis, there was Jean Todt, there was Flavio Briatore. Big personalities, big characters. Christian Horner has led Red Bull to five Constructors' championships since the team's F1 debut in 2005 Max Verstappen has won all but two races this term and is closing in on his third world title Red Bull maintained their unblemished 2023 season with their 13th win at the Netherlands GP 'I suppose the difference between now and then is that they were all quite entrepreneurial, and they thought of the bigger picture whereas now you see a bunch of managers in the room that are very short termist, who only focus on their little area. So that’s been an interesting change.' Horner and his squad are in the midst of a level of dominance that is remarkable even for Red Bull, a team that held the record for consecutive race wins for a driver during a commanding four year-spell ending in 2013.  The team have won all 13 races this term to sit 255 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructor standings, while two-time world champion Max Vertsappen is on a record-nine race winning streak and could seal his third title at the Japanese Grand Prix next month.  Horner would not be drawn on the secrets of their success and insisted he carved out his own lane in the sport, rather than copy one of the principles he admired.  'There’s nobody that I modelled myself on,' he added. I had a lot of admiration for them whether it was Ron or Frank or what Jean Todt did. Flavio in his flamboyant way. 'They’re all very different but the one commonality that they had was that they would do the best that they could for their team and assemble the right group of people together.'  Share or comment on this article: Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix via Formula One | Mail Online https://www.dailymail.co.uk?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

vro0m’s rewatch - 42/288
2009 Turkish GP
Recap + GIFs
Oh God. Lewis was out in Q1 again. This season f*cking sucks. Seb is on pole, with Button and Barrichello behind him.
Now they’re talking to Horner who calls Seb “the boy” and then says he’s just talked to an Italian commentator : “She’s much prettier than you two are”. Brundle answers : “Oh yeah? But does she know about oversteer and understeer and do you care?” And Horner says, laughing : “I didn’t understand a word she was saying, but it doesn’t matter!” Nice little display of casual sexism.
Anyway, Lewis now has the same dilemma he had last GP : start with max fuel and do a one-stopper or start with little fuel and do a three-stopper? But he still says it’s gonna be a fun day and they’re gonna work hard and he’s hoping to get at least one point for the team.
Tumblr media
Apparently there’s also a lot of issues off-track between FOTA and the FIA regarding that whole budget cap we were hearing about back in Monaco. The week after this one is the deadline to sign up for next season and the teams are refusing to take part in it in the current state of things. There was an actual strike from the teams, except Force India and Williams, as they didn’t take part in something having to do with a 2005 race, I have no idea what they’re talking about.
Formation lap.
And they’re racing!
And before the end of lap 1, Jenson has overtaken Seb, who went wide and lost his spot. Lewis down in 17th.
20 laps in, I have nothing to say. Seb is still fighting for his win with a new strategy. Lewis 13th.
25 laps in, Seb is closing in on Jenson, he might just do it! He’s much faster at the moment. Oh, no. He’s pitting. Too bad. Lewis also pits a second time. He’s now 12th, behind Piquet.
A few laps later, he’s in 16th and I don’t even know why. I hate this season.
With 10 laps to go, Seb pits again? Anyways, he’s 3rd. Barrichello has to retire somehow. Nothing is happening.
And it’s the end of the race. Yeah that was a short recap...
Jenson wins, then. Seb 3rd, it’s Webber in 2nd. Lewis is 13th.
Tumblr media
He says he enjoyed the race, even if he was all the way back. He was too heavy at the start. He gave it everything so that’s why he’s smiling : he really feels like he’s “fulfilled his driver potential”.
Tumblr media
He then looks straight into the camera and says :
“I just have to say to the guys back home : keep pushing! You know, I know this car is not the best and perhaps we won’t be able to win with this one but let’s really knuckle down and focus on bringing it back, especially for next year, but I’m gonna keep on pushing for this year as well.”

He seems to manage the soft tyres okay, he says, but he was losing something like half a second in turn 8 compared to all the others. The car feels heavy!
Tumblr media
He’ll be looking forward to seeing the fans in Silverstone, again he wishes Jenson all the best, he’s doing a fantastic job. He says he saw him coming in his mirrors (he got lapped........) so in some way he saw him win the race in his mirrors.
Honestly, it seems every race he’s more chill about the fact that this year is not it. (I’m not though) He’s chatty now. He smiles and it seems genuine. A few races back he seemed very uncomfortable when he had to talk to the journalists, like he was ashamed of the car. So at least there’s that.

Lewis Hamilton's First World Champion Title - Caleb Omotunde
Everything seem to indicate the World Champion Title would be won by Felipe Massa, when he crossed the GP Brasil finish line in the first place, but the title slipped away due to Lewis Hamilton overtaking Toyota’s Timo Glock, securing the fifth place at the finish line.
Tumblr media
Lewis Hamilton, overtook the Italian Giancarlo Fisichella in a risky maneuver, took fifth place and drove the McLaren pits to the vibration, especially the father, brother and girlfriend, who accompanied the race. From then on, the race became a bitter monotony with Hamilton holding the position, with no close rivals threatening him.
In front, Massa only controlled the advantage to get the tenth career victory, the second in Brazil, but that would not be enough to take the cup. With eight laps to go, the rain gave a new face to the GP. The drivers were forced into the pits, Hamilton dropped to fifth and, with two laps to go, Sebastian Vettel outperformed the English, throwing him to sixth place, which gave the title to Massa. But just a few turns from the end, the McLaren rider overtook Timo Glock and took the title.
HISTORY WAS MADE
At 23, Hamilton became the youngest champion in the category, beating his challenger Fernando Alonso, who won his first title in 2005 at the age of 24. He is also the first British champion since Damon Hill in 1996.
For the first time since 1989, when Alain Prost defeated Ayrton Senna in the title fight despite having only four wins against six of the Brazilian, the championship was not won by the driver with the most victories - the British added five this season to Massa's six.
McLaren has yet another reason to celebrate, as the last title a rider that had won was in 1999 with Finnish Mika Hakkinen.
History was made! It was the first World Champion title for Lewis Hamilton!

The storylines just keep on coming and, as we near Round 6 of the season, there is plenty to look forward to, with the field heading to Imola to contest the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Tom Clarkson, Natalie Pinkham, Damon Hill and Italian journalist Roberto Chinchero unpack everything before the race at Imola. IT'S RACE WEEK: 5 storylines we're excited about ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix Ferrari enter their first home race of the season under pressure – but could this track suit them and their drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz? It's also AlphaTauri's home race and Nyck de Vries has plenty of expectation on his shoulders after a tough start to 2023. As for Mercedes, they prepare a major upgrade package for this weekend's race in the hope to claw back some performance and make a leap from third in the constructors' standings, while Aston Martin seek to continue their stunning run of form. Of course, it was here that Fernando Alonso took one of his most famous wins in a battle with Michael Schumacher back in 2005. And Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez enter as title contenders. Who will reign supreme at Faenza's finest track? I always tried to be strong, I prepared myself mentally for this all the week prior to this weekend.
You probably will not care but I want to share this.
I'm still crying from the the finish of the race, with Alonso gone it goes off a part of me.
I started to watch F1 when I was 4, not really knowing everything about it but learning, my dad introduced me and for over a decade we've been watching together every gp at home, it was our moment.
In 2005 as every Italian we cheered for Alonso, despite thag I've never been such a big fan of Fernando.
My dad sadly passed away right after Fernando won the championship.
Every weekend I used to write a letter about how well Fernando was doing, or just telling him how it went the race.
So today for me was very emotional, it felt like a part of my dad went away, again. So maybe I'm not your biggest fan but #GraciasFernando ❤️
