The Girl Next Door - Chapter 2 ROOF ROOF

Summary: A spring shower forces Lizz to call in help from Henry and apparently there is more to be fixed than just Lizz’s roof.

It had been two weeks since Lizz met Henry, and it was safe to say a good neighboured friendship was budding. 

As the British countryside sprouted with young life, the two of them found some much needed social diversion in each other, a daily routine keeping them sane while the COVID-19 virus wreaked havoc around the globe.

No parties, no friends, no family, no colleagues..and practically no work. It could make a good man go mad. And thus the two of them were quick to find a shared routine which was followed with religious precision.

It would start in the morning with Henry leaving his house to walk his dog, Kal.

The big akita would rush off as soon as the gate was opened and Henry would yawn, stretching out as his feet blindly carried him down the small road, only to halt when they reached the hedge of Lizz’s garden. Kal would be there with her, fetching all the rubs he could get before Lizz would pat his butt, sending him off back to Henry. Then Henry and Lizz would chat for a moment and Henry would excuse himself with a sheepish smile, making Lizz chuckle with delight.

No matter how many times they went through the routine, it still brought her great amusement when he’d shuffle on his feet, his thoughts somewhere between wanting to stay and not wanting to disappoint his dog and forgo their morning walk. And so Lizz would shoo them off, telling them tea would be ready at their return.

And it always was. Just in time for the moviestar and his hound to return, Lizz would set down two dainty cups of tea, the hot liquid in the cups steaming in the soft morning light.

Sitting down at either far end of a garden table, the two would speak about their plans for the day. And every day Henry would offer to help Lizz out with her plans, and every day Lizz would kindly decline.

‘I’m not sure why you keep saying that mr. Cavill. But truly. I’m a grown woman, I don’t need a knight in shining armour to help me with..well..this.’ She flared up her arms, indicating everything and anything around her. The list of things that still needed to be renovated and changed in this ruin of a house was endless, so she was sure he got the gesture.

He snickered and sat back in his clanky reed wreathed chair, moving the dainty cup of tea to his lips as he shrugged. The man was way too big for both the chair and the tea cup.

‘Well, then let’s say we are both obnoxiously stubborn: I keep offering my help and you keep rejecting me. There’s that.’ He hid his grin behind the cup, blowing gently before taking a sip.

‘Whatever floats your boat Hen.’ Lizz lilted, rolling her eyes.

‘So.. looks like it’s going to rain.’ He eyed up at the sky, the sun not to be seen as thick grey clouds stretched as far as the eye could see. ‘Yea, you better hurry before your sugar butt gets wet.’ Lizz sniffled. ‘Eyy..no calling me that missy. Some friendly neighbourly advice for you; don’t call them sugar butt.’ Henry retorted, a hint of playfulness in his low baritone voice. ‘Well, then some friendly neighbourly advice for you in turn; don’t call ‘em missy. MISSY! Here girl, prrt prrt, come on then!’ Lizz chirped, gesturing an imaginary pooch to come over. She laughed when she noticed Kal sitting up from his spot next to Henry’s legs, ears twirling at her high pitched voice.

Henry nickered, his cheeks dimpling as he shook his head. ‘Well, alright then. I apologise, Lizz. But ehm.. we really should be going now. Sugar butt or not, there’s no fun in tea parties in the rain. Thanks for having me and eh..see you around.’

‘Yea, yea it’s fine. See you Henry, have a good one.’ She smiled, her eyes following Henry - and his well rounded butt - as he lifted himself from the chair, his long legs stepping back over the little stone wall of her unruly garden.

He looked back once more: ‘And my offer still stands!’ He smiled, waving at Lizz. ‘Thanks, but no need!’ Lizz grinned, also getting up and quickly gathering the cups of tea as the first splatters of rain started to fall.

Living in England meant that rain was an inevitability. But this much rain? For so long? The gods sure had a laugh right now as Lizz had gathered every pot, pan and bucket in hope of keeping her house somewhat dry.

It seemed futile though, as the old roof of the house had more in common with a colander than with an actual roof.

‘Oh COME ON.’ Lizz cried, hasting into her bedroom as she found that the water was streaming right onto the mattress of her bed. ‘This can’t be…’ She tugged on the creaky metal frame, pulling the bed back a few inches. ‘..happening.’ Frowning she looked up at the heavenly water, pulling a face as she flashed her middle fingers. ‘And…YOU can go..suck it!’

In case you wondered: Yes. Lizz’s life was going…swimmingly.

Not only was she right now flipping the finger at a bit of rain water, she also had just received word that her ex was back in England. Her hot, hard to forget about, musician ex-boyfriend, Luis.

They had been in an off-and-on-again relationship, but ever since Luis’ band had gotten more fame, his schedule swamped with a world tour, it had been awfully quiet between the two. Was this them breaking up for good? Lizz didn’t want to think of it, and yet..perhaps..just maybe..she kept a slither of hope. And maybe, just maybe..she had just spent a good hour staring at his Instagram stories instead of preparing for the oncoming storm.

Ugh..she wished she could give herself an ass woopin’ for being such an idiot. But alas, this was were it was at.

And this bed? Well, it was beyond saving, she realised, the mattress already having soaked up a large amount of the water.

Leaning against her small wardrobe she sighed, repeating the mantra she had been muttering while scattering all pots and pans around the house.

‘It’s just water..Justttt…water..No need to panic. All will be fine. Breathe…’ She repeated the words again and again, but quickly enough her last bit of resolve slipped away and her restless legs carried her back downstairs, her hands grasping for her rain coat as she flung open the front door.

She hated to admit it..but..she needed help.  

*WOOF WOOF WOOF WOOF*

Kal barked in alarm.

‘Calm boy, calm.’ Henry’s voice soothed the large Akita as the door was opened, Henry’s head popping around.

‘Oh.. Hey!’ Henry couldn’t help but grin as he was greeted by a near soaked Lizz, her small figure gloomily standing in front of his door.

‘Hi…’ Lizz sulked, a deep frown etched on her face.

‘Quite the weather hmm?’ Henry snickered. ‘Want to come in?’ He opened the door a bit further so she could step inside.

‘Yea..ughh.’ Lizz followed him through the door, Henry’s finger pointing at a near empty coat rack.

‘Usually I’d be most friendly a host, but unfortunately I’m not allowed to take your coat with the virus going on and all.’ Henry gave an apologetic smile as she shrugged off her coat and boots.

‘Thanks for letting me in.’ She muttered, closing the door and giving an excited Kal a quick ruffle through his fur.

‘But of course. Want some tea? I was just making some.’ Henry called over his shoulder as he padded back into his kitchen.

In all these weeks Lizz had never actually been inside Henry’s house. The weather had always been good and with the virus running wild, the two of them had mainly opted for outdoor diversions. Now however, with the rain racking aggressively against the windows, that simply wasn’t an option.

Lizz followed Henry to his kitchen, her mouth falling open as she noticed how well organised he kept everything.

‘I don’t know what I expected, but ..it’s definitely not.. this.’ She pointed at the clean worktops and a pot of stew softly bubbling on the stove. She heard Henry’s soft chuckle as he busied himself with fetching some cups.

‘That makes me curious about your other expectations of me.’ Henry winked, quickly walking back to the stew so he could give it a stir.

‘Oh. You know. The usual; bachelor pad, deep freeze pizzas, dissatisfying one night stands and proud owner of a gaming station in the darkest room of the house.’ She smirked, looking at Henry as he pulled the softly whistling kettle from the stove. ‘..Am I even remotely close?’ Lizz tried, seeing Henry’s lips curl up even further.

‘What do you think, hmm Lizz?’ He looked over his shoulder, quirking up a challenging eyebrow.

‘Okay okay. Gotcha. You are per-fect.’ Lizz reached for her phone, animatedly “answering it”.  ‘Yes? Mhm.’ She put it back in her jean pocket. ‘Disney called, they want their prince charming back.’

They both burst out laughing, Henry slightly blushing as he tried not to spill while pouring their tea in two large mugs.

‘Living room? And a towel perhaps?’ Henry finally managed, his laugh still echoing through the kitchen.

‘Yea..perhaps.’ Lizz nodded, reaching to take the mugs from him.

Without much of a second thought Henry offered her the mugs, his large hands softly grazing hers. Like in slow-motion their eyes met. Such soft..warm.. hands.

‘OH! Damn! Corona..’ Lizz spluttered, giggling as she quickly pulled away from Henry, taking the two mugs and making his blush even deeper.

‘Dammit. I don’t think I’ll ever learn.’ He shook his head, a soft chuckle reverberating in his chest. ‘Okay..looks like we’re in for another two weeks of quarantine then?’ He winked, quickly walking back down the hallway.

Not quite sure WHERE the living room was, Lizz followed him, only to crash to a full stop as Henry suddenly opened a wardrobe.

‘IEEEKS. Hen. Careful. Hot tea, incoming.’

‘Oh..sorry. Didn’t know you were so closeby.’ He looked around the wardrobe door, a hint of mirth in his blue eyes. Lizz rolled her eyes again. ‘Incorrigible Mr. Cavill. Incorrigible.’

‘And a towel for the soaking wet lady.’ Henry smiled a tad too happily as he held up a deep red, fluffy looking towel.

‘Thanks..’ She shook her head, unbelieving of the boldness of his teasing.

Henry walked back to one of the closed doors and pushed it open, inviting her in to what was a truly lovely living room. Raw, old oak floor panels. Light and comfy looking couches placed around a fireplace, and in the back a dining table that was completely covered with a scattering of paper, writing utensils and a laptop. Probably the place where he worked. And understandably too, as the table stood right beneath a window which offered a lovely view of the outstretched fields and the little road that interlinked their houses. Or at least, that was what Lizz expected, the weather outside now so dark and gloomy it was hard to make out anything other than raindrops as they splattered against the windows.

Looking back, she noted Henry was sitting down on one of the couches, his arm folding over the arm rest as he gave her a pleasant smile. Not to look like an absolute, soaking wet fool, she quickly put down the cups of tea on the coffee table, grasping the red towel and sitting down on the other couch, drying her dripping face and hair. The material was so soft and luxurious it made her wonder if this was one of those million-gazillion-threaded towels.

‘So..you were out for a stroll?’ Henry teased, reaching forward to pick up his cup of tea.

Lizz frowned, remaining silent as she mulled over what to say, the silence eventually broken by Henry as he continued; ‘Or something else? Need some..help? ..Perhaps? Neighbour?’ He tried to keep his tone casual, but it still sounded like teasing.

Lizz pouted and slowly nodded. ‘Goddamn..ROOF!’ She growled, her outburst making Kal woof in alarm.

Henry laughed, silencing the large dog as Lizz shook her head. ‘Kal knows how I’m feeling.’

Henry’s chuckles subsided as he let out a small breath. ’Well I’m afraid even I can’t fix your ..roof..’ Henry tried to say the word as quietly as possible, ‘..in this weather.’

‘Oh I wouldn’t ask that of you. But. Maybe a couch for tonight? Until the storm breaks?’ Lizz said hesitantly, looking at Henry with large puppy eyes.

‘..Is it that bad?’ Henry made a face, blowing at his tea.

‘Yea. Let’s just say I might need a new bed..’ Lizz scowled, earning another loud chuckle from Henry.

‘Dearness me Lizz. What have you gotten yourself into.’

‘You tell me Henry. You tell me.’ She huffed, also moving forward to pick up her cup of tea, the herby drink immediately calming her foul mood.

‘Well no worries. We’ll get you some place to sleep for tonight. And, if you are into that stuff..I am making a stew for dinner, so..’ He shrugged, raising his eyebrows as Lizz sniffled softly.

‘You are one good neighbour, Henry. And eh..sure..I’m into that..stuff.’

They both chuckled.

That night Lizz crashed on Henry’s couch - even after numerous attempts from Henry to take his bed instead - and while the storm roared on outside, the two of them made for a cosy really-get-to-know-each-other night. 

In the end it became apparent they had quite a few things in common. Their love of sports being one of them. And so, after a nice stewy dinner and some glasses of wine, the fireplace roaring a hot fire, they decided they could possibly extend their morning routine with a daily run..something they both were most excited about. And that was not only because the ..running.. could get their heart rates up.

Pinky (Part 1/2)

“Stop being such a brat, she’ll only be here for a little while. At least until the shelter comes and collects her.” Hakyeon chided the youngest member of his pack. “I’ve arranged it with the shelter, they are coming in three working days’ time, most likely in the afternoon,” Taekwoon voiced from behind and made his way to the, well to put it simply, the mutt lying on a couple of towels, courtesy of Jaehwan, in the middle of their living room and cooed, “Come on, let’s go get you cleaned up.” 

Sanghyuk pulled a face and threw his body onto the ground. “She’s going to be so much trouble!” “You’re more trouble.” Came Taekwoon’s snarky reply all the way from their shared bathroom. “She’s just a little girl, how much trouble can she cause.” Hakyeon prodded his outstretched leg with his own and left the sulking teenager to his own devices to oversee Taekwoon and their guest.

Pinky was her new name, upon Taekwoon’s insistence. Because she was a girl and she had a pink spot on her black nose. “But that’s sexist.” Cried Wonshik, So Pinky it was, and their opinions were all invalid. “No, it’s a black spot on a pink nose!” Ken defended. Since Wonshik was deemed dangerous to sleep with due to his erratic sleep-induced movement and Taekwoon didn’t think that Pinky should room with the devil that is Sanghyuk, their shared room immediately fell out of the running for ‘Pinky’s Bedroom’. Hongbin also felt that a small room with four long-limbed grown men wasn’t the best place for a fragile pup either so Taekwoon volunteered to sleep in the living room with her until the shelter comes to take her. 

She was brought back to the dormitory by Taekwoon, wrapped up in his own jacket and half starved. Her short coat of brown and white hairs were terribly matted and she was covered in filth. Her left ear bore a tear, probably the work of an accident that occurred without proper care after. Nearby, the carcass of a larger dog that looked strikingly similar to Pinky, lay, swamped with rats. Poor Pinky, was crouched in a corner, weakly barking to fend off any of the larger rats that had tried to attack her, or at least that was the story Taekwoon had fed the members when he came home with a mongrel in his arms. 

“Your story doesn’t add up. How could you see that the dead dog looked like Pinky when she was being eaten by rats?” Sanghyuk questioned.

“I just could.” The elder replied stiffly. 

Hongbin and Jaehwan had been sent to buy necessities for Pinky and they came back with more than what they actually needed for three days. “Who asked you to buy a kilogram of food? She’s going to be here for three days.” Hakyeon stared at their purchases incredulously. “Yeah but we figured-“, Ken started, “No you mean you figured.” Hongbin sighed. “Yeah okay, same difference. We figured that Pinky must be so starved that she would need a lot of food.” 

“Then how about all these toys and this fancy bed?” Hakyeon’s eyes widened when he saw the packages toys and treats that were hidden inside a folded up dog bed that felt way more comfortable than the mattresses they were using.

“They were all discount items, I swear! Taekwoon said go buy something nice for her!” 

Hongbin tries to forget that he had a part in the shopping too. 

  After dinner time, the first accident happens and it dawns on the boys, what Sanghyuk meant by trouble. They soon learnt that Pinky was definitely a stray and that strays were not toilet trained and that meant that she did not understand that she should have done her business on the pink pee tray that Jaehwan had laid out by the entrance of their communal bathroom and not by Wonshik’s weights.

“Well? Clean it!” Sanghyuk eyed Hongbin who in turn looks at Jaehwan who was glancing around, trying to find another living thing to make eye contact with. “I can’t believe you guys didn’t see this coming.” 

“Should we wait for Taekwoon and Hakyeon to come home-“, Jaehwan picks up his phone, wanting to call the two older boys about their messy situation. 

“No, I’ll clean it. The house will smell if we wait for them. It’s just two tiny turds and the smallest puddle of pee I’ve ever seen.” Hongbin sighs. 

Sanghyuk crouched down to Pinky with angry eyes and pointed to the mess she made. “You shouldn’t pee and poop around the house. Bad dog!” Scooping her up, he brought her to the pee tray and pointed to it. “You do things here!” 

“Stop that, she can’t understand you.” Jaehwan watches the younger worriedly. 

“They said dogs were smart.” Sanghyuk grunted in response and looked down at Pinky. She simply stared back at him with a pair of large eyes, full of innocence. “Stop looking at me like that.” 

The next day, Hakyeon was out since the early morning, barely hours after he came home late from his radio schedule, Hongbin was off to emcee another music program, Taekwoon and Jaehwan were at their musical rehearsals and Wonshik was in his work studio, leaving Sanghyuk alone at home. With Pinky. 

“Stop following me around, I don’t like you.” He sighed, pushing the puppy away with his foot when she approached him for the hundredth time that morning as he walked to the kitchen to get a drink. “I really don’t like you. All the other guys treat you like some princess but you’re really ugly you know.” He turns away from her and going back to his room, shutting the door behind him. 

He reappeared in front of her again at noon and she greeted him enthusiastically, waving her mangled tail and for a second, he found that sort of cute in a weird way and rewards her with a small smile but it doesn’t last for long when he saw the mess she created in the living room and the other bedroom that housed all the other boys, sans Wonshik. There were ripped up paper all over the living room floor and a chewed up shoe which belonged to him, torn clothes that were obviously pulled off the drying rack, socks strewn all over, and in the bedroom, pee over their blankets. 

“You!” Sanghyuk glared, pointed a finger at Pinky as she crouched to the ground guiltily. “You really love making life difficult for me don’t you. The others are going to be mad at me. They’re never mad at you.” He muttered bitterly. “I hate this stupid dog. Stupid Taekwoon and his stupid rescues. You know what? I hope no one adopts you at the shelter and they put you to sleep!” 

Without any suspense, he received a good nag from Hakyeon and Pinky only got more cuddles from Taekwoon. 

That night, he felt something warm burrow it’s way next to him from under his blankets. In shock, he yelped and shoved the thing and it hit a pile of bags and whimpered. Whimpered? He squinted into the darkness and realised that it was Pinky. She had crept in through the crack he had left in case it got too stuffy. “Pinky? Aren’t you supposed to be out there with Taek?” he mumbled, half asleep but he was too tired to think. 

In the morning, he woke up to the feeling of a little tongue licking his eyelids and the sounds of panic from the living room with the faint, “Pinky’s gone missing!” With an arm over his eyes, he opened them to find Pinky right in front of his face, giving him a wet good morning. “Ugh, now I need to cleanse my eyes..”

“Hyuk! Wake up! Pinky is- oh.” The Hakyeon’s aditation quickly faded into realisation. “Hey, Taekwoon, no need to call the cops, she’s in Hyuk’s room.” 

“The cops? Seriously? For this stupid dog that no one wants?” he rolled his eyes. “Don’t be rude, kid.” Taekwoon appears at his door frame. “What is she doing in your room, I though you didn’t like Pinky.” 

“How do I know? She came here herself.”

“Anyway, we need you to do something for us. We all have work today except you so we’ve left you some money. If it’s not enough we’ll give you some more when we get back. We can’t believe this slipped out mind but could you take her to the vet?” Hakyeon asked. 

“The vet?” Sanghyuk stared at him.

“Yes, the vet. We should have brought her there at the start but it slipped our minds and we were too busy but no excuse, of course.”

“The vet. For what? She’ll be gone by tomorrow afternoon anyway.” He shook his head in protest, throwing his blanket off and standing up, with Pinky clamouring at his feet, excited for him to be up. 

“Hey, Han Sanghyuk. We took her off the streets. That means we have a responsibility over her life now. If anything is wrong with her, we need to know. I would go there myself but I cannot pass on my commitments. I don’t care how much you dislike her, the five of us have already decided to care for her like she was ours until she leaves and you’re on our team so you play your part regardless of your feelings towards her although I don’t see how anybody can hate Pinky. You’re going to go and I want to see the doctor’s report.” 

Taekwoon had the last word and that was final. 

“She’s about five months old, no microchip, most of her injuries have healed but you can see on the x-ray that she has a small growth around her left front limb from a fracture that healed on its own. She’s a tough girl.” The vet smiled at Pinky and then to him. “She has a few skin problems but nothing serious, it’ll go away in time. Her ears have ear mites but I’ll give you some pyrethrin for that. Other than that, she’s good!” he sighs in relief because if anything was wrong with Pinky, the other guys would definitely have problems with letting her go.

The cashier calls for Pinky and he pays, silently gagging at the costs of a mere check-up and some cream for a puny dog and heads home, hoping that one of them would be around because he has no idea what to do with her. 

“Hey Pinky. You won’t see me again tomorrow. Will you miss me? I’ve been pretty awful to you, I’m sure you won’t miss me.” He pulls her onto his lap and shakes the bottle of ear cleaner as per the instructions. She sniffs at the bottle curiously. He lifts her good ear and peers inside her ear hole and grimaces. “Pinky, your ears are really gross. I need to get paid for doing this.” He brings the ear cleaner close to her ear and she yelps, scaring Sanghyuk. 

“You brat... “ 

 There’s a glint in his eye as Pinky dashes across the room, heading for the pile of dirty laundry behind the kitchen. 

“Pinky and I are friends now.” He announces when everyone is home and exhausted. “She didn’t let me clean her ears with the medicine and we played hide and seek for hours but finally I caught her and she’s good now.” He grins proudly. He has a hand on Pinky’s belly and he’s giving her tummy scratches as if he never had a bone to pick with her but the others were too tired to notice. Wonshik was already asleep in the room, Jaehwan and Hongbin were having their supper and Hakyeon was busy memorising his lines in his bedroom. 

“What did the doctor say?” Taekwoon asks tiredly from his position on the living room floor. 

He hands over the doctor’s report. 

“That’s good, I guess tomorrow, she’ll leave us.” Taekwoon looks a little heartbroken when Pinky goes up to him and places her paws on his knee. “I don’t know if it’s a good thing that Hakyeon and I won’t be around to see her go.”

“Yeah.”

“Be good to her before she leaves our home.”

“Okay.”

This somehow was more appealing to Ms L, so, fine. Then it gets to be like day 5 of this--and the client being who it is, this is not a two-minute process, it’s taking 15 minutes each morning to do this--and I’m like hahaha why are we still doing this?? Is the dog not improved?? Bc the dog looks--not great, she’s a lump-ridden yeasty bow-legged dry-eye geriatric dog, but--clinically well, BAR, trotting around, tail wagging, Ms L says eating good, etc. And then in talking to Ms L, I realize she genuinely believes if the dog does not get Cerenia (”shmeenya”) and Buprenex (”poopinex”) every day, she will die. This is a cold-hearted convinction, actually worrying in its intensity. And every morning me & the other techs have to listen to her quaver that she “looks into her eyes and sees pain, just excruciating pain” and in the next breath, like it’s news I’ve been waiting for, “her bowels are well-oiled” and I finally tell doc YOU HAVE TO HAVE A TALK WITH THIS LADY. She gave me a copy of her all-day schedule with the dog, which is planned not to the minute but to the hour. She literally spends all day following immediately behind the dog, fussing, trying to make her drink fennel tea. It goes on. The daily shmeenya injections continued, and by Saturday the dog was getting really sore from all the pokes and was starting to yelp when stuck for the LRS, and that was making Ms L mad bc she thought we were being rough with the dog. I did explain firmly to her that I was very sorry but the dog’s skin is sore from all these shots, and there is nothing I can do to make it less painful, so she had to make peace with the fact that the dog has to experience a moment of discomfort to receive comfort later on. On Mon doc told me to get her in for a QOL discussion, except I couldn’t phrase it that way or she’d wig, so I bullshitted something about “how we as a team can be aware of her health.” She came in that afternoon and THE NEXT MORNING THERE SHE IS ON THE SCHEDULE FOR ANOTHER SHMEENYA INJECTION and talking to her was no different. The dog’s bouncing around the lobby and Ms L’s telling me how she went through her stool for blood and found none and this morning she burped after eating her egg and what does THAT mean and I’m not getting paid enough for this nonsense. Doc told me that Ms L was defensive from the start at the QOL appt.
