Designing Women: Fashion Creators and Their Interiors at Museum at FIT
Now through May 14, 2023, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology has a show on women fashion designers who also did interior decoration from the late 19th Century onward. As both kinds of designing were part of the decorative arts, this made perfect sense to them. The same principles about the art of composition were used to design both. In fact, one of my early fashion books actually explains how to make each room of a house as harmonious as a woman’s clothing.
You see here a yellow, fur-trimmed tea gown from around 1918 which is attributed to Lucile, then a remarkably fluffy evening cape by Jeanne Paquin, evening cape, 1987, France, and lastly a painting by Henri Gervex which he called “Cinq Heures chez Paquin” or Five Hours at Paquin from 1906 which gives you the idea that women spent a lot of time picking out their purchases at the designer’s salon.

My reform dress for the #CoCoVid #reformdresschallenge is done! It's from a 1910s cutting diagram and instructions, fabric some friends gave me with embroidery I designed, and it works for Edwardian stuff and is simple enough I feel like just running errands in it! Thanks @fannyfadenfroh and @juulvictoria again for putting it together, I've loved making this and chatting with everyone else making their dresses! (And I low-key wanna style this to be more medieval now, so I could walk from the 1910s into the middle ages and still look passably dressed!) #sewing #cocovid2020 #reformdress #edwardian #edwardianfashion #cocovidsewing #quarantine2020 #quarantinesewing #myface #historical #1910sfashion (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDiVec4D-mm/?igshid=1m2oha0pq3sih

A woman who travels by rail should not wear many and delicately coloured ostrich feathers or flowers in her hat. A railway train is not the place either in which to display white or pale tinted gloves, a long trained gown garnished in lace, etc, or flowing or sumptuous wraps.
We tend to romanticize the past, but we should not romanticize train travel in 1915 because its effect was to cover passengers in dust and dirt. If the coal burning out of the engine did not dirty you, the dust from the surrounding area could. And then when you got somewhere, you would have to cross streets with horse manure ground into them. All and all, not the place for pale or fragile garments, or something you need to clutch to you to keep safe
Instead, dark clothing and plain accessories were recommended in this 1915 Encyclopedia of Etiquette by Emily Holt.  And although traveling by car or plane is much easier now, I still think she is right. The jostling of a coffee cup, a bang into dirty luggage, etc. can still ruin a pale outfit, so opting for dark colors and something simple still seems the best bet.

Beautiful girl had some mending done tonight -- I removed the VERY HEAVY belt that was causing strain to the chiffon, but can wear it without it being attached.. hopefully! Did some stabilizing/darning with a matching blue chiffon I bought the entire bolt of, knowing I would use it someday >:) #antiquedress #1910s #1910sfashion #antiqueclothing #1900s #edwardiandress #edwardian #vintageclothing #antiqueclothing #ribbonwork #antiqueribbonwork #metallicembroidery #metalliclace #loftyvintage (at New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqoUCdwAung/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qw5x2av88hyx

For my first experiment in historical costuming, I think the blouse turned out quite well!! Just got back from @deyoungmuseum with the @gbacg to see the Monet: The Late Years exhibit. What an astounding collection, and such lovely company as well!! This was my first event with the costumers guild so I was very nervous, but everyone was so friendly and interesting to speak with, I’m looking forward to the next event!! . . Monet was the first artist I ever really loved. There’s something so airy and effervescent about his work, and yet so serene as well. That’s why his late works really hit me so hard, there’s so much trauma and anger and confusion and loss happening in his later paintings, it’s almost uncomfortable to look too long. It’s so profoundly intimate to look so openly into someone’s struggles. Such beautiful work, I’m definitely glad I went!! . . #costume #costumer #1910sfashion #edwardian #edwardianfashion #monet #deyoungmuseum #sanfrancisco #goldengatepark #claudemonet #art #impressionism #sew #sewing #historicalcostume #historicalcostuming #history #historicalfashion (at de Young Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxGSR2qDvGN/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=r79p72k3vyfe
