Reposted from @norman_parkinson We are very saddened to hear about the passing of Raquel Welch, an icon of glamour. Norman Parkinson was lucky enough to photograph her in 1967 for American Vogue’s August issue wearing a coat by Cooper Couture. It was this year that Raquel’s career blossomed internationally, filming in Spain for ‘Fathom’ and in England for ‘Bedazzled.’ 📸 by Norman Parkinson / Iconic Images #normanparkinson #iconicimages #raquelwelch #americanvogue #vogue #voguemagazine #coopercouture #fathom #bedazzled #1960sfashion #60sfashion #fashionphotography #vintagefashion #1960sphotography #60sphotography #vintagephotography #photographyhistory #portraitphotography #colourphotography #death #rip#eugenelacroix1 @eugenelacroix1 #photography https://www.instagram.com/p/Cow1F2JIC_4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Portrait of photographer George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968). Hoyningen-Huene, who was of aristocratic descent and was a Baron himself, was one of the first real fashion photographers. He made some iconic pictures for the French Vogue and American Harper's Bazaar. In France, he met his future colleague Horst P. Horst, who quickly became Hoyningen-Huene's muse, model and lover. In later years, Hoyningen-Huene also worked as color advisor in some large Hollywood productions. #hoyningenhuene #georgehoyningenhuene #photography #fashionphotography #photographyhistory #horstphorst #queerartist #portrait https://www.instagram.com/p/CiMzmrON2Mn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Steerage by Alfred Stieglitz
NEW EPISODE: Episode 08 is all about Alfred Stieglitz’s “The Steerage.”   Many people think this is about immigrants being turned away at port, but that’s not actually the case.  In fact, there’s a lot about this photo you may not know about.  It’s even considered to be the photograph that ushered in modern photography.  Let’s take a look at what makes this image stand the test of time and how it’s still relevant even to this day.
This is the eighth episode in a series of episodes that’ll drop every Saturday throughout 2024.
Share it with others if you enjoy it. Head over to my YouTube channel to watch (link in bio). Also linked in my stories.

#Repost @tbradway ・・・ Just off press from @damiani_books and @icp :the long awaited, remastered facsimile edition of Weegee’s classic book “Naked City”. _ Many thanks to @alexandergalan @pesci.silvia for the opportunity to oversee & produce the republication of this important piece of photo history. Thanks also to ICP’s Christopher George and @mpolhamus for their fantastic collaboration. _ Originally published in 1945 and one of the most important photobooks of all time, this is the first time since the 1956 edition that it has been available in its original form: the way Weegee envisioned it. _ For this edition, we used duotone scans made from Weegee's prints to get closer to the original source material. The new edition includes two commissioned texts by Christopher Bonanos and Christopher George which provide further context about the history and importance of the project. Matt Polhamus used painstaking care to rebuild the jacket (printed in six colors) as well as to match the original design grid and typography. Finally the book was masterfully printed by Faenza Printing in Italy—the finished book is an even more seductive object than I expected, and the experience has definitely been a highlight of my work in publishing. _ From the Steven Kasher Gallery website: "The influence of Weegee and of Naked City are incalculable. William Klein’s New York and Robert Frank's The Americans are unthinkable without it. Diane Arbus wrote: "He was SO good when he was good. Extraordinary!" Daido Moriyama, greatest of all Japanese street photographers cites Weegee (along with Warhol) as his major influence. Warhol's major subject is the tabloid imagery that Weegee pioneered and epitomized.” _ Releasing Spring 2020 from @artbook @thamesandhudson _ #weegee #nakedcity #icp #photography #photohistory #newyork #artbook #20thcenturyphotography #art #photographyhistory #grittynewyork #booksbooksbooks #newyorkhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/B7RiXqcJaFc/?igshid=1lmgrmw7ngzrp

Marilyn Stafford - A Life in Photography. Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. February 2022.
What a delightfully pleasant afternoon spent in the company of Marilyn Stafford, 96, and her photographs at the Brighton Museum for the private press opening of her new retrospective ‘Marilyn Stafford Life in Photographs’. Over the years Marilyn has mastered the art of a presser and to hear such eloquent wonderful and emotional stories spoken to camera was so lovely to witness. The project came to life with the effort of a large team of people, most are all now friends and possibly considered family and crowd funding.  If you are in Brighton and can spare the time it is well worth the effort to wander through the Laines of Brighton to the wonderful museum and view the show which is up til May 8th 2022.  We were the lucky girls chosen to do the painstaking restoration of well over 200 images, the job came in during the first Covid lockdown and lasted for many, many months. To now see the exhibition prints and to own the book is a privilege. Marilyn, like many in photography, got lucky very early on in her career - the rest was down to her vision, humanity, compassion and faith in people.

Portrait of photographer Horst P. Horst (1906-1999). Horst, born as Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann in Germany, became one of the greatest (fashion) photographers of the 20th century. Established photographer George Hoyningen-Huene introduced Horst to Cecil Beaton, after which Horst, too, started working for Vogue. Horst quickly got renowned as photographer of the rich and famous. In 1938, he started his relationship with diplomat Valentine Lawford, who regularly wrote about Horst's life and work. The two stayed together for the rest of their lives and even managed to adopt and raise a son. #horstphorst #horst #portrait #cecilbeaton #valentinelawford #georgehoyningenhuene #photography #fashionphotography #photographyhistory #queerartist https://www.instagram.com/p/CiXHWtoNbQ1/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Image 1 of 3: Thursday July 15: Bananas Anyone? Premiering on anchor.fm/letters-read, readings from the 1906 scrapbook contemporaneous with the last documented yellow fever outbreak in New Orleans and the United States. Featuring readers William Bowling and Grace Kennedy with audio production by Steve Chyzyk and Sonic Canvas Studio. In photographs and text, this interesting relic presents the idea that bananas imported by the largest importer of them in the world at that time were safe and did not promote the spread of yellow fever. What was the purpose for this curious piece of ephemera?Documentation of United Fruit’s best practices in sanitation and mosquito abatement? Merely propaganda? For over four years prior, effective protocols for mosquito eradication had already been in place for most American cities. Characteristically, New Orleans lagged behind. . . . @visit_thnoc #history #reading #neworleans #neworleanshistory #archives #fruit #library #photography #photographyhistory #photohistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CQT7mD-FjP3/?utm_medium=tumblr
