THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY

1873 – Censorship: On this date the U.S. Congress enacts the Comstock Law, making it illegal to send any "obscene, lewd, or lascivious" books through the mail. The law was named after its chief proponent, general busy-body prude, anti- obscenity crusader Anthony Comstock. The enforcement of the Act was, in its early days, often conducted by Comstock himself or through his New York Society for the Suppression of Vice.

People literally committed suicide because of this law. Ida Craddock committed suicide on the eve of reporting to Federal prison for distributing via the U.S. Mail various sexually explicit marriage manuals she had authored. Her final work was a lengthy public suicide note specifically condemning Comstock.

This law was used to suppress LGBT literature until the January 13, 1958 Supreme Court ruling in which the Court delivered an astonishing unanimous pro-Gay decision, overturning the rulings of the two lower courts against the magazine One, and limiting the power of the Comstock Act. As a result, Lesbian and Gay publications, like White Crane (at the time, the mere discussion of being Gay was considered "pornography") could be mailed without legal repercussions, though many continued to experience harassment from the Post Office and U.S. Customs.

ONE, Inc., a homophile educational organization, was founded in Los Angeles in 1952 by about a dozen members of the Mattachine Society who wished to publish a monthly magazine. The name "ONE" (also the magazine's name) was chosen from a quote by 19th century British essayist Thomas Carlyle: "A mystical bond of brotherhood makes all men one."

1903 – The American fashion and costume designer Adrian was born on this date (d. 1959). Born as Adrian Adolph Greenberg (sometimes credited as Gilbert Adrian) in Naugatuk, Connecticut, he studied at the School for Fine and Applied Arts in New York and in Paris.

His most famous costumes were for The Wizard of Oz and other Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer films of the 1930s and 1940s. The photo below shows the and the iconic ruby slippers he designed for Dorothy!

During his career, he designed costumes for over 250 films and his screen credits usually read as "Gowns by Adrian". On occasion, he was credited as Gilbert Adrian, a combination of his father's forename and his own. Among the many he dressed were Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Greta Garbo and Katherine Hepburn.

Though he was openly Gay, he married Janet Gaynor in 1939, possibly in response to the anti-Gay attitudes of the movie studio heads and the sex-negative atmosphere created by the Production Code.

In 1942 Adrian retired from the cinema and opened a shop in Beverly Hills, California. His reasons for leaving Hollywood? They wanted to mess with Garbo. He famously said "It was because of Garbo that I left M-G-M. In her last picture they wanted to make her a sweater girl, a real American type. I said, 'When the glamour ends for Garbo, it also ends for me. She has created a type. If you destroy that illusion, you destroy her.' When Garbo walked out of the studio, glamour went with her, and so did I."

1940 – On this date the American fashion designer Perry Ellis was born (d. 1986) He founded the influential Perry Ellis sportswear house in the mid-1970s. Throughout the 1980s the company continued to expand and include various labels such as Perry Ellis Collection and Perry Ellis Portfolio. By 1982, the company had more than 75 staff. In 1984, Perry Ellis America was created in cooperation with Levi Strauss. In 1985, he revived his lesser-priced Portfolio line. In the early 1980s, wholesale revenues had figured at about $60 million. By 1986 that number had risen to about $250 million.

In his early career in New York, Ellis began to explore the homosexual side of his nature. He had previously dated a few women but had never developed a serious relationship with any of them. He now also started having affairs with men, including one with Robert MacDonald, a young man then working in the film industry. Their romance faded after about six years, but MacDonald would remain one of Ellis's closest and most trusted friends for the rest of his life.

As accolades and award nominations for his designs came Ellis's way, he negotiated a complex deal with Manhattan Industries that gave him his own division within the corporation, Perry Ellis Sportswear, Inc., and also created Ellis's own company, Perry Ellis International. The agreement was signed in August 1978. The arrangement would allow Ellis to branch out, eventually adding lines of men's sportswear, evening clothes, shoes, furs, fragrances, and linens.

Ellis presented his fall collection in April 1978. The show was the first to feature Ellis's men's wear designs. The first model to wear them on the runway was Robert "Beau" Tropper, who had recently become Ellis's lover. Although Ellis was not out publicly as a gay or bisexual man, the nature of his relationship with Tropper, some sixteen years his junior, was an open secret in the fashion world.

A key player in the expansion of Ellis's enterprises—and in his personal life—was Laughlin Barker. The two met in 1980 and immediately fell in love. Shortly thereafter Ellis retained the law firm for which Barker worked as corporate counsel for Perry Ellis International. In June 1982 Barker began working directly for the company as its president and legal counsel, a position created especially for him by Ellis, who held the title of chairman.

Barker proved to be an astute businessman. By the beginning of 1986 sales were up to approximately a quarter of a billion dollars.

Ellis was briefly hospitalized with hepatitis in early 1981 shortly after he and Barker returned from a trip to Africa. Ellis recovered, but following the episode both he and Barker started showing more concern about their health.

Within a few years the two men began to decline visibly, Barker in particular. Although they kept up the demanding task of guiding Ellis's fashion empire, they spent more and more of their time running it from Ellis's luxurious beach house at Water Island, a tiny and isolated community on Fire Island.

Ellis and Barker nevertheless continued to travel frequently. They made several trips to Paris in connection with the development of Ellis's fragrance line, but according to close friends they were also going to the Pasteur Institute, a leader in AIDS research, where patients (including actor Rock Hudson) were able to obtain experimental drug treatments unavailable elsewhere.

Barker was hospitalized in late 1985, but Ellis brought him home at Christmastime. Barker died on January 2, 1986 at the age of thirty-seven. His death was publicly reported as due to lung cancer.

Although Ellis himself was desperately ill, he insisted on attending a benefit for the American Foundation for AIDS Research in late April. A longtime friend later speculated that Ellis may have intended this as a tacit acknowledgment that he had AIDS.

Elis presented his final collection on May 8. Far too weak to close the show with his traditional skip down the runway, he could only walk to the top of it with the support of his two design assistants. The audience rose to give him a standing ovation.

Fashion critics praised the collection, but before the writers had even written their reviews MacDonald was driving Ellis from the showroom to the hospital. He remained there, eventually lapsing into a coma. Ellis died on May 30, 1986.

His demise was attributed to viral encephalitis, a common immediate cause of death in AIDS patients.

1973 – Xavier Bettel is a Luxembourgish politician and lawyer, serving as Prime Minister of Luxembourg. He has previously served as Mayor of Luxembourg City, member of the Chamber of Deputies and member of the Luxembourg City communal council. Bettel is a member of the Luxembourg Democratic Party.

In 2013, Bettel was elected leader of the Democratic Party, and in the 2013 election, led the party to a third-ranked position in parliamentary seats. On 25 October, Bettel was designated by Grand Duke Henri as the formateur for the next government. He assumed his post as Luxembourg's Prime Minister on 4 December 2013. In the government's coalition of the Democratic Party, Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party and The Greens, he also holds the functions of Minister of State, Minister for Communications and the Media, and Minister of Worship.

His policies were expected to include reforms on same-sex marriage in Luxembourg, replace religious instruction in schools with general ethics classes and cut spending to maintain Luxembourg's AAA credit rating.

His government legalized same sex marriage in 2015, allowing Bettel to marry his male partner.

Bettel is openly gay, and has stated that increasingly in Luxembourg "people do not consider the fact of whether someone is gay or not". Bettel is Luxembourg's first openly gay Prime Minister and, worldwide, the third openly gay head of government following Iceland's Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and Belgium's Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo. As of October 2014, he was the only openly gay world leader.

Bettel has been in a partnership with Gauthier Destenay since March 2010. In August 2014 Destenay proposed to Bettel, who accepted. Bettel and Destenay married on 15 May 2015. (On 1 January 2015, same-sex marriage law reforms that passed in June 2014 had come into effect.)

Interestingly enough, Bettel's deputy prime minister, Etienne Schneider, is also gay.

1973 – Two California police officers have a shootout in a restroom after one attempts to arrest the other for "an act of oral copulation."

2010 – On this date Gay marriage in Washington, D.C. became a reality in the nation's capitol, when Angelisa Young and Sinjoyla Townsend applied for and received a marriage license. The African-American couple had been together for 12 years and were married a week later thanks to years of advocacy on the local level to change the laws and offer marriage to all. Most importantly the election of a Democratic party-controlled Congress and White House assured the law would not be overruled.Gay council-member, and former Republican David Catania had waited to introduce the bill until a friendly Congress was in place that would allow the local decision to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples.

Since the Republicans took the house in the last election they've threatened to put roadblocks on the city's law. That is because Washington, DC is still treated like a colony and doesn't have autonomy in its decisions — although the citizens pay taxes and fight in all the wars.

What we know of Oz: The second extravaganza

If you remember what I said a long, long, LONG time ago, the first Oz book was adapted into a stage musical (an “extravaganza” as they were called back then) by Baum in collaboration with other big names of the time, and it was a MASSIVE success, so much that the MGM movie actually borrowed a lot of elements from it. It was the success of this extravaganza that made Baum write the sequel to “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”: “The Marvelous Land of Oz”. The book’s more adult tone, love for puns and jokes, and great focus on the Scarecrow and the Tin Man (the stars and most beloved actors of the Wizard extravaganza) were all intended so that the book would be easier to adapt as a musical. When you think about it, the big reveal of Tip as being Ozma is also actually something Baum wrote with in mind the idea of a stage play: indeed, at the time, young male roles and boy characters were often played by young ladies, and as a result this kind of “gender reveal” where a male turns out to be a woman was very common and very easy to do in those kind of theatric performances. (So yeah, to all of you who hoped Baum was defending transgender rights, he was actually trying to make money out of a future musical. Sorry for your hopes.)

But Baum had a tiny bit of problem… He had already started to write a musical that would follow the first one, a stage adaptation of the second novel titled “The Marvelous Land of Oz: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman”. Hell he started writing it in 1903, so before “The Marvelous Land” (the book) got even published. As you can see he really designed it all to feature the two iconic character of the play. But turned out that the star actors, Fred Stone and David Montgomery, refused to play in it, because the “Wizard of Oz” extravaganza was still playing and they refused to abandon the show for a potential sequel.

As a result, Baum had to rewrite his intended story by removing the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman… so he had no Dorothy, no Cowardly Lion, no Scarecrow, no Tin Woodman… who was going to be the main feature? * looks over to Tip/Ozma* IT’S GOING TO BE THE WOGGLE-BUG of course!

Indeed this secondary character with no relevance to the plot of the actual book, here just for laughs, has become the star of the extravaganza. And thus in 1905 “The Woggle-Bug” was released, the second Oz extravaganza and an adaptation of “The Marvelous Land of Oz”. So what was different?

# When Jack Pumpkinhead comes to life there is a dance where “Harvest Sprites” appear in the pumpkin field surrounding Mombi’s hut and bow down to Jack as if he was their king.

# After Jack is brought to life and Tip leads him away from Mombi’s hut (no mention of petrification potion or Tip fleeing Mombi), we cut to the school of Professor Knowitt (who you might remember from the Woggle-Bug’s story, where he was called Knowittall), where the students are actually here children (in the book itself it was unclear if the school taught to children or older pupils). As with the original story, the Professor magnifies the Woggle-Bug on a screen with a magic magnifying glass, only for the bug to get off the screen and bow down to everyone. The Professor tries to put him back in the screen, to not effect. As in the book, the Woggle-Bug is very fond of puns, making tons of them, but the thinness of his so-called education is much more prominent here due to constantly mistaking or mispronouncing words (for example he calls “patois”, aka regional language, “patties”, like a beef patty).

# Surprise, Mombi appears right in the middle of this scene! As it turns out, the school of professor Knowitt is the school where Tip studies (big departure from the book, where Tip lived with Mombi and never went to school). Mombi is searching for him, as he actually fled her house with Jack, and the Woggle-Bug, eager to be of assistance, puts himself of service to her – he mistakes the story of Tip and Jack running as the one of lovers fleeing their parents to live their love freely. (There is also a little joke about how, if the Powder of Life can bring to life anything it touches, it should be used on the Democratic Party). The Professor actually fights a bit with Mombi because he refuses to let the creature go, claiming it as his property and discovery, but the Woggle-Bug scares the Professor away by saying that if he is held too long at school, his parents will come “bite him”. Again, jokes and jokes and puns.

# The plot of Jinjur’s army also crosses over here, because five peasant women (noticed for their lack of grammar and typical “hillbilly talk”) arrive searching for General Jinjur – who soon arrives, and everyone (including the Professor, Mombi and the rest) bow down to her, as if she had some sort of regional power. The Professor and the Woggle-Bug try to dissuade them from going to war, but the “army of gallant milkmaids and scullery ladies” is determined for war. Mombi refuses to be enlisted in the army (though Jinjur proposes it), but does make the deal of helping her with magic in exchange of capturing Tip and his Powder ; and the Professor also agrees to assist the army. The five peasant girls also want to join the ranks of Jinjur’s fight against the men, but Jinjur is a bit… let’s say she doesn’t knows too much what to do of those five peasant-ladies and is a bit awkward around them, so she precisely names them the “Awkward Squad”.

# About the Awkward Squad, their “captain” and most prominent member is a girl named Prissy, and she is at the center of a very bizarre humoristic subplot about the Woggle-Bug: the Bug falls in love… with Prissy’s dress. A beautiful checked dress that he loves and wants for himself, constantly trying to snatch away from the girl.

# Another major change: Jinjur isn’t a little girl anymore, oh no. In this play Jinjur is an adult woman (or at least a young woman), and she mentions that she used to attend this very country school house – with Professor Knowitt! Apparently they are of the same age, and there was a strange love triangle where Jinjur was courted by a certain “Tommy Bangs” (that called her “Sweet Matilda”), while Knowitt himself in his youth at the school tried to seduce Jinjur (in fact it is implied he obeys and follow her due to this old infatuation).

# The City of Emeralds has been changed here to “The City of Jewels” (though it is still in the Land of Oz). Interestingly, Tip visibly knows that he used to be Ozma, princess of the City, but was enchanted by Mombi. Tip even has very clear memories of her time as a princess (contrary to the book, where Ozma was enchanted as a baby, this Ozma was visibly enchanted as a young girl). In fact, Tip recalls that as Ozma he had many lovers despite her mother’s “watchful eye”, and one of them almost won his/her heart.

# The Scarecrow has been replaced by the Regent of the City of Jewels, Sir Richard Spud, alongside his faithful sidekick “Lord Stunt”. As with the Scarecrow, the Regent is tired of the complicated and sophisticated life of a king: he wishes to return to simplicity and honesty, and when he learns about Tip he is so joyful to find back the real ruler that he promises to hunt down for Mombi, to have her return Ozma to her true form.

# The subplot of the dress continues as Mombi suddenly appears wearing Prissy’s dress (for… unknown reasons) and the Woggle-Bug, desperate to obtain it, tries to seduce Mombi, to the point they even exchange blowing kisses. Mombi comments that never has anyone fallen in love with her before, and after slipping a few innuendos and “naughty jokes” she resolves herself not to answer the Bug’s seduction, because if she ever got married the “hobgoblins” would stop obeying her (aka, she would lose a part of her magical power).

# Mombi and the Bug, who are in the City of Jewels, meet all the other characters, and the Regent threatens Mombi with a public execution if she does not restore Ozma (and Mombi thinks the Regent is a fool for trying to give up his job, visibly not understanding why someone would not want to be king). Hopefully for the Witch the Army of Revolt marches on the City, with their banner “Give us Victory, or Give us Fudge!”. The Regent tries to talk the girls out of the war, to no avail, and so there is a battle and…

… You remember how in the novel the victory of the Army of Revolt was mostly humoristic? Yeah? In this musical… THE ARMY BURNS DOWN THE CITY OF JEWELS! BURN BABY BURN! And they take as prisonners the Regent, the Woggle-Bug (who decided to abandon the army and thus was deemed a traitor), Tip and Jack.

Note however that they don’t destroy the city, since the rest of the play takes place in the royal palace, like in the book.

# We get to see the spoiled and ridiculous behavior of the Army of Revolt once their conquered the City and it is a bit different than in the book: here they spend their days chewing gum, playing games (which always end up with them fighting for real since they are sore losers and cheaters), they choose whatever house they like in the city to be their own (and if they forget which one they chose, in the case of Prissy, they just get another one randomly), and they also bathe in champagne. As in the book, all the men are forced to do cleaning duties and taking care of babies.

# The Regent, who has been enslaved by the Army, has attracted the eye of Jinjur, who wants to marry him – but the Regent, whose main wish is to live a peaceful retirement in the countryside, refuses to marry Jinjur… unless she becomes a milkmaid. Jinjur of course is not going to do so, so she decides to just lock him up in a room until he agrees to marry her.

# The tensions between Mombi and Jinjur explode as soon as after the victory: Mombi wants Tip and Jack, she claims that Jinjur’s victory was due to her, and she even calls Jinjur her “slave”. Jinjur of course rebels, but Mombi threatens to turn Tip back into Ozma and make Jinjur lose her throne – so Jinjur plays on Mombi’s great vanity (calling her “beautiful” and all sorts of lovely names) to convince her to actually destroy Tip, Jack, and the Woggle-Bug too. Mombi refuses to kill Tip at first, but Jinjur ultimately convinces her to do so. Though her “convincing” isn’t maybe so great – when later Mombi sees Jack, she promises not to destroy him if he becomes her servant and obeys her every orders. Mombi also promises Jinjur to cook for her a love-potion they will give to the Regent.

# When Jinjur brings in her prisoners, we finally have back the “petrification” episode of the book: to prevent Tip from ever becoming back Ozma, she will turn him into a marble statue ; she also says she plans to kill Jack to make a pumpkin pie out of him the whole Army of Revolt will eat. As for the Bug… WARNING RACISM ARRIVES, but for the Bug Mombi calls “Aunt Dinah” (a mammy character, on top of that played by a man) and asks her (as she is the cook of the army) to prepare the Bug on toasts, “Newberg style”. Fun fact – the dress subplot continues! Because this time, it is Aunt Dinah who wears the checkered dress (how come the same dress is worn by three different people? I DON’T KNOW) and so the Woggle-Bug tries to seduce her ; but the Aunt, thinking he is a lobster, rejects him (because she is… lobster-phobe apparently).

# This fun subplot also mixes with another subplot: Professor Knowitt and Prissy (the captain of the Awkard Squad) fell in love, and want to marry. One of their lovey-dovey scenes is interrupted by the Woggle-Bug, who is lamenting the fact he is heartbroken and will never be able to be with the love of his life – and he tells them his story. Prissy wants the Professor to squash the Bug, but he refuses. The Professor proposes to save the Bug’s life from the cook’s kitchen by shrinking him back, but the Bug refuses. Ultimately Prissy, to have the Bug leave them alone, suggests that he cuts a piece of the dress and wears it close to his heart, so that like that he might be with his “beloved” at all times.

# Here we have the Gump episode – that Tip, Jack and the Bug build to escape. Mombi sees that and tries to order those around her to hunt them down, but neither Jinjur nor Prissy nor the Professor follow her orders. So she decides to take matters in her own hands… she does incantations around a cauldron, she invokes a bunch of other witches for a dance, and there is also another dance of black cats this time. This whole thing casts a spell, which at first breaks a storm upon the group, then creates a field of gigantic chrysanthemums with the faces of the Army of Revolt, a field that moves to block the way wherever the heroes go (a clear re-invention of the sunflower field episode from the book). And, strangely, this time it is the Woggle-Bug that saves the day by… revealing that his father was a wizard and invoking a flood to wash the flowers away.

… Yeah.

This play is bonkers I tell you. Completely crazy.

# Now, there is no Glinda here in this play. Rather we have another witch of Baum’s works, “Maetta the Sorceress”. (Maetta is a Glinda equivalent Baum wrote for his book “The Magical Monarchy of Mo”, and he already used Maetta as a replacement for Glinda in some versions of the first extravaganza). Interestingly, Maetta’s palace seems to have electricity to light it up? Maetta welcomes the travelers (her talismans warned her beforehand that strangers were about to arrive). After hearing all of that she has her favorite page, a boy named Athos, send a group of fairies to summon here Jinjur, Mombi, Prissy and Knowitt. There, Maetta plays “the Wizard of Oz”, as in she asks everyone what they want: Tip wants to become Ozma again, Jack wants his head not to rot, and the Woggle-Bug wants the dress he is in love with. Suddenly the Regent barges in the palace: he escaped the City of Jewels by riding on the Sawhorse (which then tried to kill him when he offended it, it is a long story).

Mombi is punished by Maetta by being cast in a dungeon, and she is dragged away as she throws insults at everyone. Jinjur appears before Maetta dressed as a simple milkmaid, because this is what Maetta condemns her to be as she dismantles her armies. The Regent, seeing Jinjur as a milkmaid, falls in love with her, and the two former rulers agree to get married. Interestingly, here it is Maetta herself that turns back Tip into Ozma by singing a magic song while he rests on her lap – and Ozma proceeds to name Jack Pumpkinhead her Prime Minister (yeah, nominates the idiot who can’t understand simple things as a Prime Minister… it makes sense). Prissy is also here, wearing the famous dress, but also a coat covered in military medals (it was a running joke that Jinjur gave medals to her girls for nothing and everything). Maetta takes away those medals and orders Prissy to return to being a simple milkmaid, and when the Professor and Prissy reveal they are about to get married, Maetta sets them free because apparently they are a punishment enough for each other.

But before Prissy leaves the “romantic dress” subplot is solved by… the Bug tried to rip the dress away, the annoyed girl ripping the skirt herself and throwing it at the Bug’s face, and then the bug wearing the skirt as a vast under his coat.

Oh yes, and to solve Jack’s wish, a servant of Maetta puts a big tin can over his head and labels it “Canned Pumpkin”. So it can’t rot. Get it?

And here is "The Woggle-Bug", the 1905 play following "The Wizard of Oz" extravaganza. This play, contrary to the first musical, was a disaster. Critics did not like it, audiences did not like it... a disaster. A failure. It basically killed all dreams and projects of future Oz plays. Mind you, Baum did another musical adaptation of his Oz work on stage... but it was also a failure. More on that later. On top of the already convoluted and crazy plot (oh yeah I forgot another element of the "Woggle-Bug is actually a wizard" subplot is that at one point he conjures up Sawhorses for all the main characters in the play to dance with... yeah) ; critics of the time mentionned that the play felt too "simple", as in it was truly a children story, in the sense adult audiences would not (and did not) enjoy it. It was too childish. Plus the special effects weren't apparently really great? Notably at one point there is a literal "rain of cats and dogs", and one critic remembered this moment as looking like animal corpses were thrown down... So yeah, big failure. BUT the whole subplot of the Woggle-Bug falling in love with a dress has stayed pretty well known in the Baum "fandom", and is now often mentionned in modern Oz adaptations as an inside joke or clever reference ("the incident with the dress" as Oz fans call it).

So I didnt grow up with this one ,I first saw it a few years ago when I first got Disney + and decided to fill some of my gaps of Disney classics I hadnt seen .This is based on the 1903 opperetta (Very loosely from what I have heard ) and its been adapted a number of times ,the ones I have seen are the Shirley Temples Storybook adaptation with Johnathan Winters as Barnaby and of course the LAurel and Hardy 1934 version which is very much my favorite of the three I have seen (Which is homaged in this film as Gonzorgo and Rodrigo are very much inspired by Laurel and Hardy ) .As for Disney's version,I have now seen it three times.....And while enjoyable it is not as good as it could be

Lets start with what I do like :I very much love the set design and aesthetic ,it does go for an almost artificial feel, like you are watching a play or a cartoon.I think the cartoony effects are a bit much ,but love the elaborate sets and props anduse of puppets for menacing living trees and the talking goose Sylvester . I especially like the nursery rhyme town set it looks so good . The finale is amazing ,where a shrunken Tom leads an army of toys against Barnaby ,with some cool stop motion and some fun gags .

The three bad guys are the best part of the movie ,they get three of my favorite songs,and they are just so funny .The mercenary duo are played by Henry Calvin and Gene Sheldon ,best known for another Disney property , the TV series Zorro ,where Calvin played the bumbling Sergent Garcia and Sheldon played Zorros mute sidekick Bernardo .I have become a bi8g fan of Disneys Zorro ,so it is fun to see them here as lovable villains and it is also fun to see them as a duo ,as their scenes in Zorro tended to be fun .They get to show off their main talents ,Sheldon showing off his mime skills as the silent of the pair and Calvin getting possibly my second favorite song in the film ,showing off his beautiful baritone singing the darkly comic Slowly He Sank Into the Sea .They are very much diffrent then their Zorro characters ,Calvin getting to play a competent villain who despite being a thug speaks almost eloquently as Gonzorgo as opposed to the well meaning but not that bright Sergent Garcia who was often saddled with evil bosses in Zorro , and Sheldon while again playing a silent role is completely diffrent as Bernardo was a heroic intelligent character ,here he is the goofy character ....Who is also a little blood thirsty as Roderigo ,I kind of love it .Now the best piece of casting HAS to be song and dance man Ray Bolger as the main villain Barnaby who by consequence is the best part of the movie . On a meta level ,Bolger is most well known for another fantasy musical ,playing the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz ,so it is fun to see him go from a lovable character to a villainous one , but honestly they just struck gold with this casting.Bolger is a very physical actor(Makes sense since he was a dancer ),a lot of the character is in how he moves,so he know how to twirl his cape ,lurk about ,and just becme this creepy old miserly villain.He's also just a perfect comedic villain ,clearly having a ball playing this cartoonish bad guy ,but doesnt OVERDO it,he knows when to dial it back and be a threat ,he is the mustache twirling bad guy personified .I should also mention that villainous trio get a pretty fun villain song with We Wont Be Happy Till We Get It ,but I have to talk about Barnabys solo song.....Which might be my favorite scene in the film :Castle in Spain ,a villainous seduction song where Barnaby tries to woo Mary .Its a fun song on its own,sung wonderfully by Bolger ...But the best part: BOLGERS GOT MOVES .I'm not a dance person ,but even I am impressed by his dance solo in this film,and despite being 22 years after Wizard of Oz he hadnt lost a step

Well I think thats about it-Oh wait no the rest of the movie exists,gotta talk about that .OK I know that sounds harsh ,I honestly mostly like the movie but I'm sorry ,this movie has dull elements......And the dullest are the leads .Now Annette Funnicello does an amazing job ,and Tommy Sands has one fun song "Floretta ",but their characters are just cardboard and I dont like the kids who Mary looks after either .Honestly I could roll with that though,the appeal are the villains,the set design ,effects and the music , and that stuff is mostly good.....But then the film gets to Toyland which is the most boring part of the film until the climax

Toyland is just two guys in a toy shop ....And it stops being a fantasy film ,and becomes this weird science fiction comedy ,and its just underwhelming.Ed Wynn and Tommy Kirke do a great job ,Ed Wynn is always a hoot , but they feel so out of place (ALso the toymaker played by Wynn I feel is too mean to Grumio played by Kirke )and I am just not into the toyland setting

Overall I am split on the film,I ADORE parts of this film....And the other parts are kind of dull.I do reccomend it because the fun parts are so good ,it is enjoyable but it isnt perfect .Its an uneven film but some of the performances ,the music ,and aesthetic make it a good time

Every Judy Movie-#19

Way, way back in High School I set out to watch every single one of Judy Garland’s movies. Several I’ve rewatched many times since, others I had no desire to see again. Now, in honor of the centennial of her birth, I thought I’d do something with this knowledge and make a quick write up of my thoughts on all of them...

Title: Meet Me in St. Louis

Release Year: 1944

Plot Summary: A year in the life of the Smith family in 1903 St. Louis, the year the world’s fair came to town. The story’s main focus is on the second-eldest daughter Esther (Garland), on the cusp of adulthood, starry-eyed, and filled with young love for the boy next door (Tom Drake), and the youngest child, Tootie (Margaret O’Brien), mischievous and morbidly fascinated by death in a way only an innocent child can be. Their father (Leon Ames) gets a job in New York, a move that threatens the family’s fragile innocence. Will they go?

Thoughts: The plot description doesn’t sound like much, but this is a masterfully told coming-of-age story. Rarely have the simple joys and frustrations of adolescence been filmed with such love and care as they are here.

Even the simplest of scenes becomes a technicolor marvel under Vincente Minnelli’s direction, while the cast takes characters that on the page might seem thinly drawn and elevates them into people we’ll all recognize from our own lives in some way. For example, the scene where Esther tries to get her crush to kiss her by asking him to turn off the gaslights with her is just perfectly staged and shot. It captures both the awkwardness and longing of puppy love beautifully. Just a flawless cinematic moment.

There are many other fantastic moments too, the Halloween scenes with O’Brien are particularly great, displaying a less wholesome aspect of childhood than was usually depicted on screen at the time. Garland debuts several of her most famous songs, including “The Trolley Song” and her heartbreaking rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Initially reluctant to take the role, fearing another lovesick teen part would set her career back, she shines here in a way she hadn’t since Oz. Ironically, it was only after this movie that she was able to leave her adolescent roles behind her and be embraced as a glamorous leading lady.

1907 - 1908

Top O’ Th’ World is a musical by Mark E. Swan with music by Manuel Klein and Anna Caldwell and lyrics by James O’Dea, featuring songs with lyrics by Joseph W. Herbert. It was originally produced by J.M. Allison, staged by Frank Smithson, and choreographed by William Rock and Signor Luigi Albertieri.

The story concerns Maida, a little girl who finds herself mysteriously transplanted to the workshop of Kris Kringle near the city of Illusia. There is a love story in which a near discoverer of the North Pole resolves to find it, if only to rescue a maiden who has been frozen by Jack Frost at the command of Aurora Borealis, Queen of the Northern Lights. Guided by Kankakee, an Eskimo, and his little daughter Kokomo, the entire party proceeds to Illusia, accompanied by The Candy Kid and The Jack in the Box, who were brought to life in Kris Kringle’s workshop, and who are paired up as travelling companions of the Friendly Bear.

The show was designed to appeal to both young people and their parents. The variety musical included:

The musical opened in Toronto at the New Alexandria Theatre on August 26, 1907. It then moved to Buffalo NY, Rochester NY, Detroit MI, Cincinnati OH,

On October 16, 1907, Top O’ Th’ World played Young’s Pier in Atlantic City. [Although this newspaper suggests the play tried out at Young’s Pier in Atlantic City, the newspapers there do not list any such performance on these dates.]

Top O’ Th’ World opened on Broadway on October 19, 1907 at the Majestic Theatre (5 Columbus Circle at 59th Street). The Majestic had previously housed the family-friendly hits The Wizard of Oz and Babes in Toyland. Anna Loughlin, who plays Kokomo the Eskimo Princess in The Top O’ Th’ World, returned to the Majestic where she had played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Arthur Hill (the Bear) was her Cowardly Lion.

About the Venue: The Majestic was built in 1903, one of the first theatres by Columbus Circle, which was expected to become another theatre district. It went through many name changes and owners until 1923, when William Randolph Hearst took over, changed the policy to cinema, and renamed it the Cosmopolitan. It was torn down in 1954 to allow for wider sidewalks in front of the New York Coliseum.

George Munroe cross-dressed to played the role of Aurora Borealis, Queen of the Northern Lights, in the style of a pantomime dame.

On February 3, 1908, the show moved to the Casino Theatre (1404 Broadway at 39th Street) where it closed on February 22, 1908 after 156 performances.

“’The Top O’ Th’ World’ is a bit of stage-jelly with powdered sugar spiced mildly with peppermint and wintergreen.” ~ INTERNATIONAL PRESS ASSOCIATION

Frost King (aka Dolly Dimples) is at large in the big city!

The first week in December, a new song titled “Dinah” was added to the show. It was also announced that the production had arranged ‘closed automobiles’ to transport groups of 25 children or more to the theatre for free. To accommodate holiday audiences, the production offered daily matinees.

“On Christmas Day a Santa Claus will distribute dolls to the little girls of the audience who are so fortunate as to draw tickets for them. Two dolls, of life size, are among the prizes in this ingenious lottery - these being described as ‘made in France, of the finest material and dressed for the occasion’."

The doll promotion was so successful it was continued at all Wednesday matinees.

~ Fun and Feast for ‘Top o’ th’ World’ ~

“After last night's performance of ‘The Top o' th' World’ at the Majestic Theatre there was yet another performance for the benefit of the company only. A small stage had been built under the regular stage, and on this various members of the company made fun for the rest. Sam Diamond indulged in recitations from Shakespeare and George W. Monroe and Catherine Clifford were also on the program. Then Manager J.M. Allison and his wife treated the entire organization to a beefsteak dinner. Congressman and Mrs. James W. Rhlnock of Ohio Joined In the festivities” ~ January 1, 1908

About the Venue: The Casino Theatre was built in 1882 for light musicals and operetta, but showed mostly vaudeville starting in 1892. A 1905 fire necessitated much reconstruction. In February of 1930, the theatre was demolished to make room for the expanding garment district.

In an attempt to keep the show fresh producers staged a song contest. There were no winners except the show, which got free publicity from the stunt.

After closing at the Casino on February 22nd, The Top o' th' World went on the road, opening with Philadelphia on February 24th, then visiting Baltimore, Washington, Boston, and stopping in Atlantic City.

Top O’ Th’ World opened in Atlantic City at the Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on April 16, 1908. The theatre was supposed to host Miss Marlowe during this time, but her engagement was canceled.

In 1910, the play morphed into The Top O’ Th’ World Dancers, extracting the more popular acts (including the Collie Ballet) into a variety / vaudeville production.

44 BC – Italy: The first written reference to same-sex marriage appears when Cicero insults promiscuous Mark Antony whose father Curio "established you in a fixed and stable marriage, as if he had given you a stola." A stola is a traditional garment worn by married Roman women. Cicero’s sexual implications are clear, the point of which is to cast Antony in the submissive role in the relationship and to impugn his manhood.

1796 – The poems of Count August von Platen (d.1835) are homoerotic expressions of Platonic love, idealism, beauty, friendship, and longing. Platen was born in Ansbach, Bavaria, the son of an impoverished nobleman. He attended the Military Academy at Munich and the Royal Institute of Pages resulting in his commission as a lieutenant in 1815 in a regiment against France during the time of Napoleon; he, however, engaged in no action.

Platen was extremely erudite, mastering a dozen languages, including literary Greek and Latin, French for social status, Persian for poetic reasons, and even English.

An admirer of Michelangelo and Italian art, Platen visited Florence, Rome, Naples, Syracuse, and Sicily. While in Naples in the 1820s, he formed a homosexual friendship with the poet and painter August Kopisch, all the while perfecting the content and form of his poetry. By 1826, he had moved permanently to Italy, supported by a pension from his friend, King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

Focusing his sexual urges into the artistic and creative realms, Platen transformed his passion for same-sex relations from the physical to the intellectual. On occasion, a friendship lasted only a year or so—for example, his intense relationship with a young painter, Rühl—but it nevertheless served to heighten his creative powers.

His controversial, multilingual, autobiographical narrative, which contains an explicitly erotic homosexual theme, was not published until the end of the nineteenth century, under the title Diary (Die Tagebücher, 1896-1900). In his poetry, Platen employs a recurrent homoerotic image borrowed from Persian poetry, the tulip, which is a spiritual symbol for masculine love.

Platen's longing for love and friendship is a persistent motif in his work. He addressed seven sonnets to "Cardenio," an Erlangen student, who is described as a young, tall, dark, and handsome man with full lips.
