1899 musings
Daniel and Elliot are dead right. I mean they look like dead people. Look at them in comparison to the rest of the people in the simulation.
Maybe both died and Daniel is actually not good but wants to keep Maura in the simulation so they can be together as a family? Only a part of the simulation that is not controlled by her brother? HMMM

Okay but why can the bugs open doors. Why do they send Ada to her death. If theyre helping Elliot why do they make everything happen as it always has. If Daniel and Maura's father both wanted to close the simulation why are they faced against each other. Does Elliot remember everything, if so why didn't he reset like the rest of the passengers. If he was so easy to find in his little bunker under the tomb why didn't they find him before. And WHO THE FUCK IS SEBASTIAN IN ALL OF THIS

Sooooooo,,, in short resume: they were all in 'cryogenic sleep'; and for the whole series we're just tangled in the messed up mind of the main character during her 'cryogenic sleep'; while the other characters (somehow connected mind) pushed her to wake up and free them all from their 'cryogenic sleep'.
I think this series is also trying to messed up my mind, it's great, but just like DARK, i ended up confused and heavy with thoughts...😰😰

So I‘ve finished 1899…
amazing show but boy have I got questions.
Spoiler:
What I‘m really curious about though is what determined which people were able to hear that „jump into the water signal“.
At first I assumed it would be all the „extras/NPCs“ but the last scene of the final episode disproved that.
Anyone have any theories on that?

1899 Episode 8
Oh. My. God!!! What a ride! There’s a lot to unpack here so I’ve just included the natural progression of my thoughts as I was watching the episode:
1. I was right about the passageway and ship representing the neural pathways and the brain, respectively! Love the symbology.
2. Who do we trust when we don’t know what’s real or not? It would be more of a twist if Maura is the Creator and it would explain Daniel’s behaviour as well as Henry’s. Like, if this was Henry’s experiment, he wouldn’t have allowed Daniel and Elliot to interfere so much. So perhaps he doesn’t have as much control as we think. Also, the “wake up” is in her voice...
3. The speech about seekers vs. avoiders... *chef’s kiss*. I can always trust the creators of this show with their epic monologues. And again, a really strong parallel to The Matrix.
4. So the white injection makes you remember, and black makes you forget.
5. Omg her and her brother being the villains and not the father is a plot twist! And I guess the father is right, Daniel does value Maura more than Elliot. Explains why his memory just includes the two of them, while her memory is basically a reflection of her guilt over what she did to Elliot. And the grave is there to signify he’s actually dead (I think? From my understanding, he’s only being kept alive through the simulation but he’d be brain dead in reality).
6. Loved the space twist! The dichotomy between the ocean and space is an interesting one so I like seeing it explored in this way. Although I wonder, is this reality? How do we know? 👀
Assuming it is real, I guess I have my answer now. This is a futuristic world that is not actually set in 1899. I initially didn’t expect the show to go in this direction (I thought it would actually be set in the 1800s based on the summary), but I did anticipate a modern twist when I saw the more recent trailer and the opening. And I love sci-fi so this is great!
7. I screamed when I saw Krester. So glad he’s real! I guess the real characters are the ones who made it onto the promo posters, which makes sense haha.
Henry, Daniel, and Elliot weren’t in the room though, so are they still stuck in the simulation (and they’re in a different room, which I guess could be the case for the rest of the passengers) or were they never even there...?
Also, going back to Henry mentioning muscle memory, I wonder if the interactions we saw between the characters are based off their dynamics in reality. Like, the characters that ended up gravitating towards one another actually shared that connection in real life, and it’s these triggers that continue to drive them together no matter how many times their memories are erased.
In any case, I wanna know how much of their backstories are true. I guess the root of their traumas could be real while the details are fictional, which was the case for Maura.
8. It appears the only way to leave the simulation is to be the one to turn the key, so does that mean only one person can leave at a time?
Moreover, it looked like Daniel deleted the simulation this time instead of just shutting it down, so did that affect the characters that were still aboard the ship? Or is it just that the Kerberos will not be sitting around in the ship graveyard like all the other simulations?
9. Daniel made it sound like Ciaran is evil, but he sounded welcoming in his message (plus Henry described him as an avoider, not a seeker), so I’m really interested in finding out what their relationship is really like.
I also really wanna know how Maura feels about Eyk. I don’t know if I misread the romantic vibes between them, but she always reacted more intensely when it came to him. So maybe Daniel is hiding the truth about some aspects of their relationship after all.
10. All in all, I’m excited to see where the show will go and to learn more about this universe. Will there be a next simulation and if so, will we get to see the characters in a different time period? Or will they all be woken up and the rest of the story will take place in 2099?
11. The main philosophical question of this series appears to be “what is reality?” in contrast to Dark’s “do we have free will?”.
12. Lastly, I just wanted to point out that I really appreciated the makeup and styling in this show. The third class characters actually looked dirty given their lack of access to regular baths, and once shit went down, the richer characters also looked like a mess. I hate when characters look perfect when they’re supposed to be in a survival situation lol.
