The Best Anime I Watched in 2023

It’s the end of another year, and that means it’s time to reflect on my favourite anime series that I watched in the past twelve months! As usual, I offer you a fun buffet of genres: some coming-of-age stories here, some action-packed sci-fi there; a bowl of historical fantasy over yonder, and a platter of slice-of-life comfort right nearby.

As in previous years, some of these reviews are adapted from my seasonal recommendations for AniFem, so be sure to check out those articles for more from me and my hard-working co-staffers, and be sure to check back for all of our end-of-year and end-of-autumn recs. For now, read on for my personal list of series that got me heart racing and made my brain happy in 2023…

16bit Sensation: Another Layer, ending

The way I just screamed and start crying

Uh oh so we’ve got some stakes now. I knew Konoha’s time travelling had to come at a cost. That cost seemingly being the changing of history and some games not being created. I wonder if the catch is gonna be that it’s a time paradox and that those games in the present don’t get made if she doesn’t help make them in the past. The good old Terminator school of time travel.

It’s cool that she’s not alone in this anymore though and now has Mamoru as a partner, kinda like Chifuyu and Takamichi. Mamoru’s dad has unfortunately been blinded by his success at Alcohol soft and isn’t putting nearly the effort into maintaining the company that he should. Typical game execs lol.

Also turns out that cleaning up the trash ended up being the best course of action for Konoha as they found info on Ichigaya. Really excited to see how it turns out

Konoha works at Blue Bell, a cheap for profit bishoujo game making company. While working there, she is constantly reminded of how much bishoujo is discredited as a gaming style, and for a true believer like Konoha, this mentality is the worst. So, when a vintage video game accidently transports her to the past, Konoha decides that bishoujo games deserve to be in the spotlight. And so, with her modern knowledge and technical advancements, Konoha begins terraforming the world into a future of her dreams.

First Impression: 16bit Sensation – Another Layer

All you 90s kids, have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back to that time? Konoha Akisato gets the chance and is now stuck in 1992 with no way of returning (as of episode 1)! Konoha is an illustrator for a video game company that creates half-rate bishojo games about beautiful girls in romantic situations—often visual novels. She aspires to draw cute girls on fantastical adventures but can’t fulfill her goal while working at a company that doesn’t share her vision. Feeling down after her idea for a game is shot down by her boss, Konoha heads out during her lunch break and stumbles upon a used video game store run by an elderly lady. A box full of classic bishojo games at the dirt cheap price of 100¥ catches her eye, stunning her so much that she begins to ramble to the elderly shop owner all about why these gaming artifacts are so wonderful. After work, Konoha passes by the shop again to thank the lady for listening to her earlier but finds the shop closed, with only a bag full of the games she was interested in sitting on a table. The owner left a note telling Konoha to enjoy the games, and upon opening the one named Dokyuusei, she’s transported to 1992! The episode ends with a quick introduction to new characters that run a small video game programming office that seems to be working on bishojo titles.

Crunchyroll to Simulcast the 16bit Sensation: Another Layer Anime During the Fall 2023 Season

Crunchyroll has announced that it will simulcast the 16bit Sensation: Another Layer anime during the Fall 2023 season. The series will be available in North America, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East and CIS. It was also announced during Aniplex Online Fest 2023 that the series is scheduled to premiere in Japan on October 4, 2023. Source: Crunchyroll

There’s been some really interesting anime in the last few years

MADOKA OP OMG OMG OMG OMG. The scream I scrumt during that opening lol. Such a hype way to kick off another great episode

When Mamoru introduced the new computers it sounded like a variation of an Eva OST as well.

Speaking of the new computers, one of the coolest parts about this series is showing the evolution of Visual novel designing. Konoha talking about the 200 layers used to make that illustration blew everyone’s minds when it’s now the standard. A lot has changed in 24 years

Introducing modern otaku marketing techniques like merchandise, dakis, pre order bonuses etc was also another great move. Nothing better than going into Animate and buying some shit and getting rewarded with a little poster or card from the LN you’re buying. Definitely makes the buying experience better.

They really only glazed over the beach/pool party?? Wtf we were robbed 😭 for an anime that’s a love letter to otaku and the Visual Novel medium, that’s criminal.

That ending was wild! Another unique element being added to the story now that Mamoru can go to the future as well. Can’t wait to see what he learns over there… could also be the past too since that game came out in 85.
