Session #15

June 13th, 2023

Our group holds a funeral for Sproing, along with Aurora and Larksann Zoey gives a eulogy Most of the group just wonder who Sprong is The funeral is crashed by the Angels, who come to comfort Zoey They are followed by a crown of students who also pay their respects for Sproing Aurora is overwhelmed, and leaves The Angels then take Zoey to get some ice cream The other students stay and genuinely mourn Sproing The rest of the group agree that the Angels cannot be allowed to influence Zoey like this anymore OUR VIEW CUT BACKS TO SEVERAL OTHER EVENTS THAT HAPPENED THE WEEK PRIOR White takes a nightly walk, and spots Grayson grumbling over some papers Grayson explains that he's looking for inspiration for a story for the Wyrm Watcher He was trying to find something interesting, but all the potential stories are too old or too boring He asks White for help in finding a story White agrees, and then suggests Sproing's funeral Grayson considers it, but asks that White find something better He also offers White a spot on the Wyrm Watcher team if he wants it White declines the offer, but goes to find a better story Over the next few days, he snoops around to find material for a better article He spots Cad at the Cute Conjurations Club cuddling with a familiar He sees Lichie trying to drink, with a frustrated janitor following after He notices a professor asking to speak to Puffcap after class He listens in to the conversation, and hears Puffcap being scolded for having Druid's Weed White finds Grayson, who is trying and failing to interview Germaine White reports his findings He suggests that Grayson go with the Druid's Weed story, since outrage spreads fast Grayson agrees, and remarks that this could be an ongoing story He thanks White for the effort The two discuss the importance of newspaper in civilizations That night, Carmilla is on a walk of her own She is surprised when Nicollin appears, and asks what she's doing He asks how she feels about him She tells him that she thinks he is cool He doesn't believe that, explaining that he's found that most people find him boring He mentions that Grayson is the only one who finds his topics of conversation interesting He asks Carmilla how he can improve his conversations She suggests that he avoid interrupting people, and that he needs to wait for other people to finish He does so She adds that he should try talking about things that people like, and uses Zoey as an example Nicollin apologizes for not being able to attend Sproing's funeral Carmilla assures him there will be more The two sit down, and Carmilla suggests that he have practice conversations to try to work on his social skills Nicollin mentions that people will worry that he's overfeeding on them Carmilla suggests that he not do that He doesn't like the idea, explaining that he has fed well in this school She warns that over-feeding will only drive people away He considers trying to stealthily feed She warns him about possible consent issues with that idea He asks that she try to get him invited to more social events so he can try to work on his social skills He also asks that she help him find better people to feed off of, explaining that Doya is like junk food to him Carmilla asks about his hobbies He mentions that he likes history, and subjects adjacent to talking She suggests a few clubs for him to join The two agree to talk more in the morning, and part ways As Carmilla goes back to her dorm, she is approached by a student The student tells her that they heard she was a friend of Sunny's, gives her a loaded D20, and leaves The next week, Doya is summoned to Archjusticar Yasha's office

She arrives and sees Angelika smiling smugly at her Doya insists that she didn't do anything Yasha explains that she called Doya in regarding the incident at Captain Dapplewing's Manor She tells Doya that Angelika saw her going in, and then running out later while dropping a marker Angelika suggests that Doya's behavior is due to her divorced parents Doya asks why Angelika was there Angelika claims to have been going on a walk, and uses the other two angels as alibis Doya mentions that she didn't take Sassy Sally Jane Yasha points out that neither of them mentioned the doll Doya admits that it was a contest held by another student, but assures that she didn't take the doll or deface anything She refuses to tell who did either of those things Yasha admires her courage, but tells Doya that she will not show her any mercy Yasha asks to search Doya's room Doya agrees, warning Yasha that she will find the doll but that it was planted there Yasha cuts a portal in the air, and ushers Angelika and Doya through Yasha enters the room, and tells Greta to leave Greta meats Doya in the hall, and asks if Doya's getting busted for drugs Angelika enters the room, and looks around while Yasha does Doya disclaims the unfairness of Angelika being allowed to enter Yasha allows Doya to be in the room too After some searching, Yasha stabs the ground, and says Sally Jane's name as she is surrounded in blue light Yasha finds the doll in the closet, and warns Doya that she will not tolerate any further offenses Later, Rin is approached by Dismay and Violence They ask if he gets extra portions Rin refuses to answer They explain that they're asking because they need tomatoes for Pain's plan, and ask that Rin try to get them They give him a bag of holding, and ask him to fill it with tomatoes Rin agrees They comment that their plan was bad Rin assures him that he'll make it work They ask him to eat another huge sandwich later since that was cool, and leave Rin goes to the cafeteria, and asks to speak to Gyome He is taken back to the kitchen, where Gyome asks what's happening Rin explains that he was dared to fill a bag of holding with tomatoes, and eat as many as he could to test the limit of his stomach Gyome agrees, but only gets him 15 tomatoes He tells Rin that he thinks that that will be more than enough for the dare Rin takes offense, and begins to devour the tomatoes right there Rin is escorted from the kitchen Meanwhile, Carmilla and Zoey are eating lunch They are interrupted by Doya, who shows them a device that emits a bright light The device produces an image of three Doya explains that the device takes pictures of what it is pointed at, and that she saw it at No Refunds She takes pictures of herself with the other members of our group White asks about the price, explaining that he might be interested in one too Doya admits that it was 120 GP She goes to take a picture of herself with the Angels She then tries to take a picture of herself with Anji, but finds that the item is out of charges That afternoon, Rin is confronted by Angelique, who asks what he's doing She laments the fact that White left Rin alone in the club, and that Rin is now on his own Rin is fine with that, explaining that he can work on his own She questions that, warning that she cannot go easy on him, and that he is his own limiting factor Rin asks if she doubts him She assures him that he'll figure out the problems eventually, and that she was just stopping by to see how he was doing He tells her that he's used to working on his own She tells him that's sad He asks about her ties with the other angels She asks if he has best friends of his own He says no She tells him that's sad He asks her what she wants She reminds him that she's the club leader, and that she's needs to check up on people She warns him that things will be challenging without a friend to help She claims that he made a mistake on his work Rin assures her he didn't, and thanks for her keeping him on his toes

Meanwhile, White stares at a blank canvas in the art club He sees Cad painting away, a human girl named Nora struggling, and the Dean of Expression overseeing the club White talks to Dawn, and admits that he doesn't know what to draw Dawn asks what he's feeling White tells her that he's afraid of making a mistake Dawn tries to cheer him up by telling him there's no mistakes in art White is successfully cheered up, and begins to paint He mentions to Dawn that he's still uncertain of what to do for the talent show She tells him a story about painter who worked upside down White considers the idea, and likes it As the two finish, Dawn shows her painting - a white rose on a black canvas, surrounded by shadow White comments that he was not expecting that type of painting from Dawn Dawn explains that she was wanting to branch out White shows his painting - a desert as seen from above, with a sunset sky Dawn and the Dean of Expression like it! That weekend, Carmilla goes back to her old home She makes a meal, cleans up the place, and then goes to the Lux Concordia prison She dismisses her birds Nandor tells her that they'll be there whenever she needs them She approaches the front desk, and explains that she's here for visitations She is told that she'll need to make it quick since it is late in the day, and is pointed further into the building An officer asks who she wants to speak to She tells them that it's Ramon Sierraverde She is asked to wait in a rather noisy room She is then summoned to another room where she is told the rules of the visitation Finally, she is taken to another room, where she sees Ramon Sierraverde covered in restraints He asks her why she's here, and if she brought lunch She doesn't answer the first question, but offers the meal she prepared She explains that she cleaned the house, but isn't living there since she lives on campus at the Wyrm Academy He is surprised to hear that she made it into the academy, and asks who is watching the house She assures him that she is He asks if there is any news from the family She tells him that she has not kept in contact with them She offers him a photograph of the family He initially refuses it, but relents when she threatens to take it away He points to one of the family members, and explains that the person he's pointing to has taken over leadership of the family while their real leader is dealing with the fallout of the Blacklight Conspiracy He tells Carmilla that she can talk to him if she wants to make some extra money on the side The two say an awkward goodbye, and Ramon comments that she has gotten taller As Carmilla leaves the prison, Guillermo and Nandor return Nandor offers to cheer her up Carmilla agrees The next day, Zoey talks to Melwythorne about why he joined the academy He explains that heard stories of city life, and that it was like an ecosystem of its own The two discuss the pace of humans and their lifespans relative to his She asks what his grove is like He tells her he's from a temperate forest to the west He mentions that his life tree is planed near No Refunds, since he needs a piece of the forest nearby He comments that the Silkball team is like a second family to him Zoey is moved by that He asks about Mage Tower, mentioning that he heard it was a large game Zoey doesn't know about that, and suggests he talk to someone on that team about the game He then brings up Street Silkball, and wonders about that Zoey is more familiar with that, and offers to play it with him As the weekend draws to the close, the first-year students of Wyrm Academy prepare for their final exam of the year! Carmilla and Zoey study with Aurora Doya, Rin, and White also study together

As Doya returns to her dorm, she finds Pain waiting for her He tells her he has something to show her, and takers her to the top of the tower he showed her before He hands her a spyglass, and tells her to look at a building As she does so, she sees it explode on the inside and collapse! She asks how he did that He explains that his dad works in demolition, and that his dad was the one to do that He goes to say that demolition is new in the city, since normally buildings are built on top of each other, but the current elite do not want to be built on He offers to show her something else, and dangles something in front of the spyglass She sees notes about the upcoming test on the paper She tries to take it He holds it away from her, telling her she didn't need it He taunts her with it, and walks close to the edge He threatens to toss it, mentioning that it wasn't a big deal since she could fly Doya demands that he get back, explaining that she cares about his well-being Pain is surprised by the kindness, and offers the paper to her He mentions that he heard about what Angelika did, and offers to break into her room and plant evidence against her Doya rides the elevator down first, and sees Pain jump down instead of riding it down She activates her wings, and saves him! She calls him an idiot for being so reckless He tells her that he wanted to see her wings, and that he had a Feather Fall bracelet anyways Doya yells at him, and beats him up for being so stupid Pain laughs it off, and the two part ways The night passes, and with it the day of the exam arrives! Like before, the exam has a multiple-choice and free-written section Anji cheats off of Zoey again Angelique asks the teacher a question Rin attempts to subtle spell to cheat He is spotted, and the teacher approaches! Carmilla kicks Rin to alert him Doya breaks her pencil, and asks for another to get the professor's attention When the professor asks why she doesn't have another, Doya claims that she only had the one since it was her lucky pencil, and she couldn't ask the other students for another The exam draws to close, and the papers return to the front desk! The next day, as the Magical Auras class beings, Professor Sharpbeak speaks up She explains that she understands how stressful exam week can be, and offers to play a game to help distress She looks uncomfortably at White as she introduces the name of the game: Doppelgänger Disaster!

OoC: Favorite Characters

I decided to focus on villains or anti-heroes, it’s hard picking just favorites in a general sense.

1. Harleen Quinzel A.K.A Harley Quin - DC Comic Universe I have been in love with this woman since September 1992 when she first aired in the Batman Animated series, Joker’s favor. Due to her brilliant creators of Paul Dini and Bruce Tim, led with the voice talents of Arleen Sorkin. She was born from her own raw desire to help people in her own best way possible, using her talents of understanding, reading and in many sense controlling people. Sadly, like Alice in wonderland, she fell into a realm of madness and uncertainty. She has been one of the most complex characters in animated history with large backstory and many turns and takes. Extremely popular on various forms and has made many appearances over the years even scoring some of her own comics and shows and now movies. When she was first created, she was merely a fill in and not meant to take and yet here she stands, a triumphant beauty whose overcome Abuse, trauma and degradation.

2. Azula - Avatar the last air bender animated television show + comics What can i say about Azula? In many retrospects she’s fierce, powerful, driven and just intelligent! I think a lot of people forget something pretty important about her: SHE WAS FOURTEEN! This young teenage, overthrew governments, taking whole cities and was the closest to killing the Avatar compared to anyone else. Not to mention her pure intelligence! People compare to playing a game of chess when it comes to moving people or controlling their actions. No, to this woman it was checkers. I truly believe if she didn’t become as over-confident as she did, the war would have ended with her taking the world. With the right nurturing, she would have become the most feared overlord the world would ever see.

3. Loghain Mac Tir - Dragon age book (The Stolen Throne by: David Gaider) and Dragon age Origins the Video game. Yeah, there’s a theme so far i am guessing you are seeing. I can’t help but appreciate sheer intelligence. Loghain is sort of obvious in the video games, it’s clear his intents. At the same time, there is far far more than what is merely on the surface with this man. An obvious villain, almost to the point of it being boring. Yet, why in the games are so many people hesitant and trusting of him? This man had proved himself, over and over, that he had his country in his heart and would do anything to protect it and keep it from the true monsters of the world. People. He was never shy about the routes he’d take, the lengths he’d go, he was brass, courageous, and deceptive. He called things out, forced people to seeing the bigger picture, he didn’t need to control or lie to people about things. He got what he wanted in the most unique ways possible, not his title, not his money, not his charisma but by being true in what had to be done.

4. Sylvanas Windrunner - Blizzard Entertainment Video games I don’t see her as a Villain, an Anti-hero, yes. Look, we all know Blizz can’t seem to understand women or know how to write them on a large scale. I seriously feel bad for both, Piera Coppola and Patty Mattson as they have to watch this poor woman get brutally torn to pieces. I will always, always have a soft spot for her and remember the days where in many respects was like Illidain, and (above) Loghain. A woman who saw the bigger picture and would sacrifice anything to save everything she cared for. I wont drag on for her, simply because i know the most people who are doing this and following are from the Blizzard franchise and i know we have all heard many many layers to this continued argument about this particular character. If ya wanna PM about it or rant at me, bring it. I’m an Alliance player at heart, but i only got into w.o.w because of this woman. Both sides are shit. *drops mic*

5. Aaravos - Dragon Prince, Netflix television animated show. Okay, seriously, if you haven’t seen the show yet: DO IT! Just as with this theme, INTELLIGENCE, INTELLIGENCE, INTELLIGENCE! Tactful, charming, knowledgeable, i mean...look at that face! He is hands down perfect. Sadly, we still know very little of him but goshdamnit! Love! Love! Love! I can not wait to know more of him and see more of him.

6. Maleficent - Fairy Tale story / Disney The jist of her, from stories and movies, is general: She was snubbed or insulted by the royal court and took her revenge on the child they were all celebrating. I’m sorry, but this has always been fantastic to me. What is more painful and hard to deal with then your own child being cursed? Claim petty if you want, but no, oh no my dear friend, this is a brilliant revenge. A normal person would blame the man in charge and curse him, but meh, whatever. Kings wont remember how they snubbed others, this is proven time and time again in many stories. Will this act ever be forgotten? Will the generations always remember not to snub a powerful faerie? You better believe it! She made a ever lasting mark, an impression that has lasted since the 13th century! Throughout the years no one has changed these facts: Maleficent was powerful, she was disrespected and she took her revenge onto a child. Normal stories like these over the years have changed both villains and heroes, or even circumstances. This classic has even seen the beautiful creation, directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton, and still they honour the root of what was and with a focus on the villain and her origins. How many villains get this?

7. Narberal Gamma - Overlord Anime/ Manga series Who doesn’t love a maid? Not to mention a Battle maid. Narberal is...mm, i don’t even know how to express her. She’s just generally cool, powerful, intelligent, loyal and honest with everything around her, just a demeanor of a refined perfection. She’s enjoyable to watch. Another thing i enjoy, she’s not the main villain. The show itself has many “villains”, i say in such way because it’s never really clear or obvious what you can count as villain or hero in a lot of ways. Yes, some are obvious but even then in many cases showed within it’s all about circumstances, who you are following, why you are following them. I enjoy the not so cut and dry of “good and evil”. This character also helps continue that ploy, helping and yet also killing people.

8. Carmilla - Castlevania Netflix series I’m a huge vampire fan, been so since middle school. I’m not as quick whipped as i use to be about the lore, history and so on when it comes to many Vampires and their origins. With such said, damn she made me bring out the books again, especially because she was one of my favorites to read about. I mean, Lesbian vampire. Do i need to say more? For now, i’ll only focus on the more recent adaption of her. So, yeah theme? We get it, intelligence. The world truly is a chess board for her, however she does not expect people to just flip the board on her. God, Jaime Murray, thank you so much for that wtf moment cause you expressed her sheer just horror at watching everything fall around her with perfection. Throughout the points we see Carmilla we see her truly be the tact master, stirring the pot and also showing her prowess in form. There is also a lot of restraint i don’t think people will give her credit for. We see how she expresses her emotions in violence, but i also think we are seeing it in a very, very pulled back way. I look forward to seeing how she changes her circumstances and sets things back into her own order in the coming season.

9. Akasha - Book series: The Queen of the Damned by Anne rice and movie: The Queen of the damned. Ah yes, the books that helped start the joys of vampires and how could i not fall in love with someone toying into the very beginning and trying to draw into the beginnings of a creature known throughout the world and time. Why do i choose Akasha considering i already touched base on vampires? Simple, she will always deserve a spot on any favorite list of anything. She gave so little cares about anything and only wanted the world to die and feel her wrath. Not to mention Aaliyah played this part so beautifully well it deserves every recognition it can get. I know she doesn’t seem to quite fit with the rest, but this is partly why she is so low on the list.

10. Callisto - Xena television series Last but certainly not least, we can’t forgot about this one. Good? Bad? Surely just pure chaos! She does what she wants and cares little about the consequences. It’s been ages since i’ve last seen the show i will admit, so my bases on her is a bit rusty. However, i will always remember her out of the many other villainous people we meet in the Xena universe. Fun, witty, combatant, you never knew what she was really going to do. As soon as she popped into a episode, i would recall fondly sitting at the edge of my seat just wondering how or why she did the things she did. There is my list of favorites, i’m sure you can see the themes between them all as many of them have common traits, inspirations and personalities. Hope you all enjoyed! Hi, everyone!! This is Maria (aka hollsteinsource) and I’m taking over this year’s Big Bang since the previous mods can’t work on it this time around. I hope we can have many new stories and new people joining us in this journey.

I’m keeping most of the same rules from last year but a few reminders and explanations (please read the FAQ):

The challenge is a collaboration between artists, writers, and betas to create 15 000+ word fics with their own fanart. You get a team and together you work on this fic for a few months.

The front door hadn’t even shut behind her when Carmilla suddenly had an armful of bouncing Laura Hollis. And then no Laura Hollis. And then arms full of Laura again.

“Carm! Did you hear the news?” Laura was practically wiggling with excitement, a flush in her cheeks and her eyes lit up with the sparkle that always made Carmilla’s heart flip over. “It’s like the best news all month!”

She grabbed Carmilla and kissed her full on the mouth. So hard and messy that Carmilla barely had time to respond before Laura was pulling back, arms locked around Carmilla’s neck.

Carmilla wracked her brain, trying to balance Laura in one arm and hang her motorcycle keys on the hook with the other. She fought to keep her face impassive. She’d clearly forgotten something. Something important.

Wedding anniversary. No. Birthday. No. Some strange modern holiday. No.

Doctor’s appointment?

She glanced over at the fridge and the tiny ultrasound photo prominently displayed in the center. No. That couldn’t be it. They’d just had one.

She had no idea.

Still, she couldn’t disappoint the smiling girl in front of her. “Of course I did cutie,” Carmilla purred, her arms wrapping around Laura’s waist “But I’d rather hear it from you.”

Laura rolled her eyes but her smile never died as she kissed Carmilla on the nose and then broke away, grabbing the keys that Carmilla still hadn’t been able to hang successfully on the hook and popping them in place. “You don’t have to pretend for me, Carm. I know you don’t really care one way or the other but I just cannot believe that it’s a girl. I mean, I was hoping but I never thought it would actually happen and I just couldn’t stop smiling when I heard. Like, I think my face is going to split in two because it’s so great for feminism although it would have been nice to see some poc too because-”

Carmilla’s brain crashed to a halt halfway through Laura’s ramble.

“It’s a girl?” Carmilla could barely breath the words. Laura was still talking but Carmilla couldn’t focus on her words.

She stepped forward almost involuntarily, capturing Laura and pressing a hand against her stomach. The smallest curve against her palm where only days before the doctor had taken an ultrasound of the newest member of their family.

“I thought,” Carmilla couldn’t take her eyes off Laura’s stomach, “we were going to make it a surprise.”

Still. A daughter. Taylor. They’d decided. The thought filled her mind, unable to be shaken once the idea was in her head.

“Did the Doctor call?” Carmilla continued, “or did Laf sneak in and run those tests they’ve been trying to get us to let them do?”

It’s a girl. It’s a girl. It’s a girl. Laura’s words rebounded through her head.

“It’s a girl?” Carmilla repeated.

She only noticed when Laura stopped talking. Then two hands came up and cupped her face, the wedding band cool against her skin. Laura was still smiling but her smile was tinged with amusement, “Um, Carm? You have no idea what I’m talking about, do you?”

Carmilla kept her hands on Laura’s belly, “You said the baby’s a girl.”

Laura looked like she was biting back laughter, “I wasn’t talking about the baby, Carm. We agreed that was going to be a surprise. I wouldn’t do it without you.”

Carmilla frowned, “Then what were you talking about.”

“Um,” Laura blushed but was still practically bouncing on her toes, “The new doctor? Doctor 13 from Doctor Who? It’s going to be played by a girl this time! Jodie Whittaker. I’m so excited.”

Her eyes sparkled, face lighting up at the announcement.

Carmilla groaned, sinking back against the wall with a hand on her face, “You’re killing me, Mrs Karnstein. Absolutely killing me.”

“You love it,” Laura leaned in, pressing against Carmilla.”Although now that you’ve brought it up, how do you feel about the name Jodie?”

Carmilla closed her eyes, shook her head, and smiled.

Castles Fit for a Heroine

Wandering through the halls of an ancient castle is the ideal for any aspiring heroine. With the capabilities of modern travel, these landmarks are now within reach without having to resort to discomforting carriage rides beset by storms and bandits.

Craigdarroch Castle

On the Canadian West Coast is Craigdarroch Castle, built by the Scottish coal baron Robert Dunsmuir in the late 19th century. Once surrounded by vast amounts of land, it has since been hemmed in by expanding neighbourhoods, but the peaks of towers can still be glimpsed over the trees. With elegant drawing rooms, stained glass windows, and a beautifully carved wooden staircase in the heart of the castle, Craigdarroch is a West Coast heroine’s dream.

Heroines can visit Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia, and it is open daily from 10am to 4:30pm, with longer hours in the summer. In October, they host theatre acts with horror themes, this year being a modern adaption of Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘The Masque of the Red Death’.

Lyndhurst Mansion

Built in the 19th century, Lyndhurst is a Gothic Revival castle in Tarrytown, New York. For an American heroine, there is no better location! It has all the towers and arched windows one could wish for while being located near both New York City and the ever spooky Sleepy Hollow. Together, Lyndhurst and Sleepy Hollow make the perfect day-trip for any heroine in New York, visitors and residents alike.

Lyndhurst Castle is open for tours from 10am to 4pm, Thursday through Monday. Tour the grounds, then go spend some time in ever-spooky Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

Quinta da Regaleira

You’ve no doubt already come across images of 20th century Quinta da Regaleira before. This castle is the aesthetic Barbie Dream House for any lover of the esoteric. The exterior of the castle has elaborate Gothic detailing, and the gardens are breathtaking, with lakes, waterfalls, and tunnels throughout. The most startling feature is the Initiation Well, said to have been involved in Templar Knight rituals. With the occult symbolism, Gothic facade, and extensive gardens, every heroine would wish to wander the Quinta da Regaleira in her finest white nightgown.

One can drape themselves across the grounds of Quinta da Regaleira in Sintra, Portugal, between 9:30am and 6pm, with later hours during the summer. Perhaps it’s best one cannot visit at night - no telling where you may find yourself on those grounds...

Eilean Donan Castle

You can’t throw the decrepit skull of your most noble ancestor five metres in Scotland without hitting an ancient castle, but Eilean Donan blows them all away. Located on the coast of the Scottish Highlands, Eilean Donan was originally built for the McKenzie and MacRae clans in the 13th century, and was reconstructed in the 20th century. Isolated with only a single bridge to the mainland, it would be easy to find yourself trapped here with the Byronic hero(ine) of your dreams.

Eilean Donan is open 10am to 4pm every day, with later hours in the summer. But be careful during the winter, as the cold and snowy landscape makes this a popular wedding destination for many heroines, and the castle may be closed for the ceremony.

The Castle of Otranto

If you’re looking to visit a castle in Italy, why not the one that started it all? Located in the heel of the boot, the foundations of Castello Argonese are ancient, but it was used by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and rebuilt in the late 15th century by Alphonso of Naples. Although the castle is hardly the typical gloomy sort heroines yearn for, the coastal location, local cuisine, and place in Gothic literature make this castle a must-see.

No cost to visit the most famous Gothic literary castle, and it’s open year-round between 10am and 6pm. Watch out for siestas though, and long lunch breaks for the staff. Miss A assures you that this is because you’re in Italy, not because something more sinister is afoot.

Reichsburg Castle

The castle today may be a product of nineteenth century imagination, but the foundations of Reichsburg Castle date back to over a thousand years ago. Located in Cochem, Germany, the castle is perched atop a hill, looking down at the town and river. The castle is an ideal spot to indulge in a picnic and some light reading - Miss A recommends Sheridan le Fanu’s Carmilla for this location.

One can only visit the inside of the castle with a guided tour, which one join between 9am and 5pm. Afterwards you can join in an authentic medieval feast at the castle. Perhaps find a tester for your wine first.

Bran Castle

Although it may not be the real Dracula’s castle (that distinction goes to more southern Poenari), Bran Castle remains one of the most famous landmarks of the Romanian countryside. Built in the 14th century, Bran has passed through many hands during wars of succession and conquest - most recently it was used as a royal residence in the 20th century, until the overthrow of the Romanian monarchy. With its red roofs and secluded location, it would inspire any heroine to take a jaunt to the Carpathians.

Bran Castle is open all year between 9am and 4pm, with extended hours in the summer. Look over the stunning countryside from castle towers before adjourning to the tea room for a strong cuppa.

Running Castlevania with Old School D&D, Part 6

To close this little experiment out, I'm going to end right where the games do: with Dracula. Now, statting out the big boss for a Castlevania game could be easy. After all, he's a vampire, right? Why not just use the same Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game template I did for Carmilla?

Well, that gets back to what I said in my last post, about Ravenloft and Castlevania being two properties with different feels to them. Case in point: Strahd Von Zarovich is probably my favorite D&D villain of all time. He's devilishly smart. He's an accomplished wizard, who uses both magic and his environment to his advantage. But he's basically just a standard vampire, with a few tweaks to his power level. A canny-enough group of PCs could conceivably surprise him in his coffin, drive a stake through his heart, and end the problem. It's not likely, mind you, but it's possible.

Dracula from the Castlevania series, however, is another matter entirely. The climax is always a pitched battle, with Dracula taking on multiple forms. His human facade melts away, revealing a hideous, demonic nature. Only by defeating his final form (however many he goes through), do our heroes save the day.

And sure, part of that is because it's a platformer game, and platformers always end with a big boss fight. But I also think it's an essential part of the franchise. Simply put, if you're running a Castlevania-themed game, the only way to make it "feel" like Castlevania is to end it with an epic, shapeshifting, "now-face-my-TRUE-power"-style boss fight.

To that end, the first thing to realize is that Castlevania Dracula isn't really a vampire. Not in the Bela Lugosi/pop-culture/European folklore sense. Castlevania Dracula is really a maō, or Japanese Demon Lord.

Don't just take it from me. The Japanese title of the first game is Akumajou Dracula, or "Demon Castle Dracula." The akuma is an evil fire-spirit in traditional Japanese folklore, and when Christianity came to Japan in 1549, Akuma was the name applied to Satan. Language drift being what it is, "akuma" was sometimes shortened to "ma," meaning devil or demon, and maō is "demon ruler" or "demon king."

This article on Legends of Localization goes into more detail, but for our purposes it's enough to know that Dracula is much more than a vampire.

With this in mind, I decided to stat out three of Dracula's forms separately. I did use a modified vampire for the first one, since it seemed appropriate. For the second, I leaned heavily on the Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game Infernal races (specifically the Malebranche and the Vrock).

The last one—based on the cluster of floating heads from Castlevania III—is a modification of the Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game Giant Flying Brain.

But enough talk! HAVE AT YOU!

Vlad Dracula Tepes (First Form)

Alignment: Chaotic

Armor Class: 21

Hit Dice: 12 (attack bonus +12)

No. of Attacks: 1 or magic

Damage: 1d10, or magic

Movement: 40' or 60' (fly)

No. Appearing: 1 (Unique)

Save as: Lvl 12 Fighter

Morale: 11

Treasure Type: Special

In his first form, Dracula appears to be an abnormally large vampire. He resembles an 8' tall human male, with pale skin, dark hair, and flaming red eyes. His canine teeth are sharp, and his features are vaguely lupine.

Like mundane vampires, in this form Dracula casts no shadow and no reflection. Unlike common vampires, he is perfectly capable of crossing running water and entering another's home without invitation. Additionally, mirrors and garlic have no effect. He may pretend to have these weaknesses at first, in order to lure his enemies into false confidence.

A cross presented with conviction will keep him at bay, provided the wielder is at least level 3 (for more information on this weakness, see the Vampire, p. 124 of the Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game). He may also be turned, but the Cleric attempting to do so faces a -5 penalty.

Dracula is immune to Sleep, Charm, and Hold spells. He does not use weapons, preferring to use spells in combat. If forced to fight physically, he slashes at his enemies with his claws for 1d10 damage.

Dracula is not known to bite in combat. However, his bite inflicts 1d3 damage, and drains two level of energy for each round he continues to feed. While feeding, he suffers a -5 Armor Class penalty. Victims reduced to 0 hit points by in this manner die, and they will rise again as vampires during the next sunset. These new vampires are permanently under Dracula's control, and always act as if under a Charm spell.

Dracula has access to many magic spells. One of his preferred methods of attack is to cast Teleport (which he can do at will) to take an advantageous position behind his enemies, and then attack from a distance with Hellfire. For purposes of spell duration and saves, Dracula's Caster Level is 20.

Dracula can command common nocturnal creatures. Twice per day, he can summon 10d12 rats, 5d6 giant rats, 10d12 bats, 3d8 giant bats, or 3d8 wolves. The creatures must be nearby to be summoned. Once called, they arrive in 2d6 rounds and obey his commands for 2 hours.

At will, Dracula can transform into a swarm of 4d4 giant bats. The bats are identical to those detailed on p. 58 of the Basic Fantasy Roleplaying Game. Dracula often uses this ability to flee the area when surprised or overmatched. As long as even one of these bats survives, he is capable of returning to his first form, retaining the same number of Hit Points he had before transforming.

Dracula also has the common vampire's Charm gaze, which his victims must save vs Spell to resist. Victims save at -4.

Dracula cannot be harmed by non-magical weapons. Reducing him to 0 Hit Points or exposing him to direct sunlight for more than 5 rounds only destroys his first form, causing him to assume the next one.

Hellfire

1st Level Spell

Duration: Instant

Range: 100' + 10'/Level

This spell causes a small ball of fire to shoot forth and strike a target of the caster's choosing, causing 1d6+1 damage. The target must be at least partially visible to the caster. For every three caster levels after 1st, an additional fireball is generated: two at 4th level, three at 7th, four at 10th, and the maximum number of five at 13th level and above.

In his second form, Dracula resembles a huge, ugly, gargoyle-like creature. Membraneous wings connect his arms to his torso. Ram-like horns extend from the sides of his head.

Dracula is incapable of true "flight" in his gargoyle form, as his wings cannot support his massive body. However, he can use them to leap vertical and horizontal distances of over 15 feet. He uses this ability in combat, leaping at his enemy and slashing for 1d10 damage with his feet.

He is also capable of breathing modified Fireballs at will. Dracula's fireballs are treated as if generated by a fifth level caster, causing 5d6 damage, and having a range of 150 feet. Rather than saving vs. Spell for half damage, his targets are allowed a save vs. Breath Weapon to avoid damage altogether.

While in this form, Dracula can only be harmed by magical weapons and spells cast by a character of 3rd Level or higher. He is completely immune to Sleep, Charm, and Hold spells. Additionally, as he is no longer assuming the shape of an undead creature, he cannot be turned. Reducing Dracula's Second Form to 0 Hit Points does not kill him. It only causes him to assume his Third and final form.

In his Third and final form, Dracula appears as a massive cluster of 4d4 giant heads. The heads float 5-15 feet in the air, continuously pulsating and moaning. Upon first seeing this form, all creatures must save vs Spell or be paralyzed for 2d8 turns, as if targeted by a Hold Person spell.

In this form Dracula can cast spells as a 14th level magic user, although for purposes of damage, spell duration, and saves, his Caster Level is treated as 20.

Additionally, each of the heads in the cluster drips a corrosive acid from its mouth. The acid causes 2d8 points of damage. Those hit by the acid drops must make a save vs. Breath Weapon. If unsuccessful, the acid dissolves 1d4 random unenchanted object on the target's person, rendering them useless.

When Dracula's Third Form is reduced to 0 Hit Points, he is not killed. His spirit is either returned to the primordial chaos beyond the world, or it is absorbed by the walls of Castlevania itself. Dracula will Reincarnate into his First Form in exactly 100 years, unless outsiders attempt to revive him early.
