My Thoughts on Juvia and Gray’s Relationship.

May contain spoilers for the anime & 100yq manga but I’ll be as vanilla about it as possible. This is a long one so get comfy.

A few years ago, I used to be upset at the fact that Gruvia took so long to happen. But now that I’m older and I’ve hyper fixated on the couple long enough, I’ve learned to appreciate their relationship for what it is now and for what it was in the beginning. From the start I’ve always shipped Gruvia but I never expected them to be together in the first place, PLUS I only shipped them because I honestly just liked the idea of them being together. Liking the idea of a couple and the couple actually being good together is two different things and I knew that. My initial thought was “how funny would it be if they actually got together”. Kinda like a gag if you will. But overtime I started to REALLY appreciate their build up. There are plenty of couples out there in popular anime who’s relationships parallel to Gruvia, (the girl or guy is deeply in love and the other party pays them no mind). But what I really hate about relationships like that is when they get slapped together at the end just to please an audience. If Mashima did the same thing, I could honestly say I probably wouldn’t be shipping Juvia and Gray to this day, but luckily for me and other Gruvia fans he did not go that route. People say that fans forced Gruvia to be canon which is just not true since FROM THE BEGINNING of the series, Gray was told by the fortune teller that he would be tangled up with a water woman in the near future. Plus the simple fact that their characters were designed to match each others (water and ice), Juvia is also a semi-yandere (I only say semi because Juvia won’t actually do anything to hurt Gray or the others she cares about) and Gray is a Tsundere. In the beginning Gray was honestly just a dick to Juvia, but that was more for comedic effect which me being a hard core Gruvia fan at the time, sometimes I didn’t appreciate. But now a days I really do appreciate the comedy between the two characters because I’ve realized there is a good balance between their comedy and the seriousness of how they actually feel about each other. You could even call Gruvia a slow burn but in my eyes the pacing is perfect and very realistic.

Here are my thoughts on Gruvia from Gray’s perspective. Gray was pretty compassionate towards Juvia when they first met, even though they were enemies, Juvia of course gets love at first sight. As they get to know each other, Juvia’s love grows more and more intense and in Gray’s eyes it comes across as pushy. Though I personally saw her love for him being a “I see you need love, let me love you” type thing. He slowly (very slowly lmao) warms up to Juvia and they start going on jobs together and forming a close friendship, to the point where they would rather go on jobs together instead of with the rest of the team.

And then the plot starts to get a bit heavier and so does their relationship. Juvia and Gray have multiple occasions where they make protecting each other their main mission. But two particular scenes stood out to me in the last two anime arcs. Juvia sacrifices her relationship with Gray to do what was best for him, we all know the scene so I won’t go into details for the sake of time and spoilers. But in that moment that’s when I decided I didn’t ship them just because the idea was cute, I shipped them because they NEEDED each other. Juvia finally understood Gray and his history, while Gray not only understood his festering feelings for her BUT he got the closure he deserved of his family, all thanks to Juvia. Although there were subtle hints that Gray started to develop feelings way earlier on than this scene, THIS is when he knew for sure how he felt.

The last and finally scene that pretty much sealed the deal for them being my otp was when they both sacrifice themselves to save each other. **cries 😭** We got a full length scene of them damn near confessing how much they meant to each other. We all know what happens at the end of that scene, then Gray makes a promise to Juvia and that was to take her feelings more seriously. The thought of him loosing someone else he loved definitely shocked him into reality and broke that Tsundere spell that was casted on to him by the creators…well kinda. In the anime Gray eventually confesses his feelings in a round about way and I HATED IT! I just wanted him to lay it all out there on the table. But maturing is realizing that, that actually wasn’t the confession and that’s apparent in 100yq.

Although I would love for them to just be together already, I appreciate Mashima and Ueda taking their time with this couple and really putting emphasis on their shared character/relationship development. I also appreciate that we get this development through Gray’s perspective, it adds a bit more to them as a couple. In conclusion, I’m lonely and I want what they have. No but seriously I’m soaking up every bit we get from Gruvia! Since Gruvia days is coming up, I had planned on doing a relationship/couple analysis from Gray’s perspective but this honestly sums it up lol!

It’s so funny whenever there’s like a “source” saying when the 100yq anime will air and the source is some random account

I keep seeing tiktok influencers talking shit about Fairy Tail 100yq but for the wrong —and worst reasons like at this point the biggest problem isn’t coherence but the weird kinks included for fanservice. I couldn’t care less about living dragons in a universe where they’re all meant to be dead I could live with that, I don’t care about new dragon slayers appearing out of nowhere I can accept that too, but GRAY literally EATS Juvia ? this should be your main concern, not the fact that Igneel has a whole ass son or that FT became Dragon tail we dgaf.

Story wise (minus the FS) it isn’t great but it’s not as bad as some other canon spin offs imo.

Like I can’t count how many times I sighed reading FT 100yq chapters but at the same time I believe we were given some good things like the Erza x Laxus fight or a bigger insight on Jellal’s past which was nice too. We also got some funny moments like Gajeel and Juvia (my fav dynamic btw) investigating the new FT member and Gray calling out a misogynist (this was definitely not on my FT bingo list). All of that to say I don’t get why people continue reading if they dislike it that much (and i’m not talking about FS bc most of the ppl complaining are men who don’t care about the fanservice and dislike it for other reasons.)

While I believe everyone is entitled to share their opinion on media, I think there’s only so much you can do by complaining about a piece that can only carry on thanks to the initial material. Like…if it brings you more despair than joy you should probably stop reading and move on.

Funny headcanon idea: during the 100YQ, when Lucy was turned into a snake woman and squeezed Natsu, Natsu was mentally thinking "Why do I suddenly feel more attracted to a dominant Lucy all of the sudden?"

OMG I wanna talk about this more!! I'll make a separate long post for it later but in short- even tho Natsu is more of a dom type, he loves when Lucy takes the charge. The fact that he gets visibly turned on when she kicks ass also says the same because it's his way of doing things, emphasizing on strength and power. So when Lucy does something like that as in shows her badassery, he loves it. He loves seeing her adapting to his style. Fairy Tail's style.

I had mentioned before how I strongly disagree with people who say NaLu is clearly a dom-sub type relationship as opposed to their Edo and FN counterparts with Natsu as dom and Lucy as sub. But I know and ofc headcanon(considering all canon) their relationship as a complete switch with Natsu taking the control more often and Lucy remaining more of sub(not completely at all) It's entirely different from Edo-NaLu in which Edo-Lucy is undoubtedly top lol except in cars and FN where Natsu is the top.

So all in all, when Lucy switches to the dom side, Natsu enjoys it because it's not common for him to be controlled by someone but here he's being put at that position by Lucy.

Gray out right says that he doesn’t like her and rejects her.

Not to mention the fact that when Lyon is hitting on Juvia, he backs off after being fully rejected, and during the Edolas arc when Edolas!Gray continuously hits on the uninterested Edolas!Juvia, it’s seen as weird and creepy, and he isn’t even a fraction as bad as Earthland!Juvia is to Earthland!Gray.

Many shippers were ready to fight Lyon for having the audacity to like Juvia when she said no, even after he backs off. Because No means No, and he needs to respect her wishes, which he did.

What they need to learn is that No means No REGARDLESS of gender.

Gray. Said. No. And there is nothing shippers or Juvia can do to change that.

As I’ve said before it’s okay if you don’t like them but baby they can only do what Mashima writes. That’s my whole point. You go into spaces on twitter where you can mute them. It’s fine you don’t like them but since it bothers you so badly you might want to mute Juvia, NaLu, Gruvia, and anything else that bothers you.

Gray didn’t like Juvia at first and I can admit that but Mashima the writer has always stated that he loved them as a ship so it was obvious they would get together. I’m not trying to make you love them. Gray did say no in the beginning but Mashima have stated in interviews and questions at the end of chapters who he was obsessed with for Gray. AGAIN ITS OKAY IF YOU DONT LIKE JUVIA OR GRUVIA.

I’m sorry you have been in terrible situations where Juvia’s character remind you of real people but Juvia isn’t real. She can only do what Mashima writes nothing more nothing less. Mashima has also stated during one of his lives that Juvia might not be understood outside of Japan because she is a girl they call a girl in love. He said it’s very popular in Japan and the reason why fans love her. He also said that fans in the west might not get it and that’s okay. It’s okay if you don’t get Juvia’s character but Juvia didn’t manipulate, force, and do anything to Gray because she’s a character and the only way for her to do any of that stuff is for Mashima to write it.

I think the issue you are having is that you applying real life to it too much. It’s okay. They not real and can’t hurt you. You might want to leave the fandom and just enjoy your graylu pocket of the fandom with fanart and fanfic because it appears to me that it’s consuming you. AGAIN YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIKE GRUVIA OR JUVIA. Just giving suggestions.

Gray said no in the beginning is correct and I agree with you on that but I’m an adult with my own little family only 28 and I don’t see the way you see it. I can’t change the way you see it no more than you can change the way I view the anime. I just don’t see none of what Juvia doing besides the stalking as anything bad. Yes she would denounce her love to Gray every chance she got and call other women love rival but those moments are suppose to be comedic relief. It’s also okay if you didn’t find them funny. I don’t find them funny either. I live in America and understand that Japan’s sense of humor is different from mine.

I’m praying you be alright at the end of the day. I just want you to see that Juvia is not a real person. You speak of her often as if she’s a living breathing human doing these things. I hate Mest but I don’t have to shout it to the rooftops and treat it like Mest is truly a person out here liking little girls. That’s my point. I agree with some of what you say especially about Gray telling her no in the beginning but Mashima didn’t take Gray’s as serious as you take them. If there’s anyone you gonna be upset with about how Juvia is it should be Mashima and not a character drawn on paper or digitally.

Also I know you don’t read 100YQ but Gray has declared his love for Juvia multiple times in the manga and Mashima has stated that he is growing Gray emotionally from the cold and closed off person he was in the original. Just fyi.

Again my post wasn’t to get you to like them but to realize you are mad at a character that is written by an author when it’s all the author doing.

Rambling about Fairies - Manga Chapter 173 + 4

The contrast of this and Natsu invading Lucy’s home in Chapter 4 is kinda funny. They also open with Lucy in her bathrobe, walking into the living room where Natsu is. Natsu’s even in a similar sitting position, and eating. 

Earth Lucy is hysterical in the same way, but Edo-Lucy is so welcoming of him it’s actually unnatural. 

Anyways, I love Edo-Lucy’s short hair, and I’m so happy she got to keep it in 100yq. It looks amazing on her. 

Also, while Cancer’s initial introductions always has him slightly disappointed because he gets called to fight instead of do what he does best (cut hair,) Edolas arc brings him specifically for purpose for the very first time that isn’t filler. 

Interestingly enough, Lucy changes into clothing that looks like Edo-Lucy’s clothes in the clothing silhouette. But while Edo has a sleek, multiple-piece clothing, Lucy’s is patterned, and just a top and skirt. Lucy continues to look like a girl on an outing, while Edo-Lucy continues to dress practically, as if she’s headed for rough travel and work. 

Cutely enough, Lucy changes hair ties to a flower (life,) and Edo-Lucy has a skull (death), just to give them even more of a counterpart feel.

Heh, so funny story. I'm quite behind on 100YQ, so I actually have no idea what that is. (I've been meaning to sit down and catch up. I was just a little tired with it...)

It is true though, that at this point, I only adopt 100YQ elements if I like them. Most of it doesn't make the cut because 100YQ made dragon magic a little too weird, and like regular magic at the same time. But anyway. Y'all may catch my rant when I do catch up XD
