teenagers are always fun and wear fashionable clothes you guys just hate to see the younger generation having fun without you
#writing this to remind me to not hate younger people or younger generation#especially when i get older a few years from now#kinda an out of nowhere rant but i been seeing alots of street interview about fashion with teen or young adults#and it pissed me off so bad seeing all the adults and elder millenials in the comment saying that this generation got trashy taste#trashy taste stealing style from other decade and also they love to be so defensive when someone mentioned that they hate skinny jean#personally i hate skinny jean too as a plus size girlie so its so pleasing seeing many people nowadays kinda go against it now#god please forbid that shit#anyways back to the main thing im saying here is that#fashion is a circle it came back and forth for many years so i dont see any point in the discussion about “gen z fashion is unoriginal”#as in the 70s there was a medival dresses revival trend#and in the 80s mod and 50s house wives dresses made a comeback#fast forward into the early 2010s we saw the hippie style suddenly became fashionable again#(though it was far from the “original hippies” from the 60s)#and now in the 20s y2k became trendy#so i just see no point in being noisy about nowadays fashion being so random#at the end of the day what everyone should do is that we should let whatever people want to wear instead of pointlessly critisizing them#people have different taste in fashion its not so hard to learn abt that espesially for older figures#rant ended please dont read these they are kinda pointless and incoherent since i have been wanting to rant abt fashion for a while#anyways peace#rant

To what purpose, April, do you return again? (or: finally, a pinned post for April)
Hi all. I'm Jessie Lynn McMains, aka Rust Belt Jessie. I'm an Xennial/Elder Millenial (please don't call me a Geriatric Millenial, thank you) writer/artist/zine-maker/etc. (I wear many hats.) I'm queer and nonbinary/genderfluid, and as far as pronouns go, I’m okay with any human pronoun (they and she are my most-used, but I like he, too, and I especially like it when people switch up the pronouns they use for me). I’m disabled and neurodivergent.
I live with my partner and our two kiddos, both of whom are also neurodivergent, and right now I’m supporting all of us on whatever money I earn. I do freelance copywriting and editing as my main thing, but I also make a decent chunk of my income from selling my zines and books and pins and whatever else I make, so the more I sell, the better able I am to pay bills and take care of my family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through my Ko-fi, you can buy my zines and books (I have both poetry and prose available) and pins, as well as commission me to make you a music-inspired mini-collage or hire me to edit your own writing. Or also just throw me a few bucks if you appreciate the content I make available for free.
If you live outside the US (I can only ship within the US via Ko-fi, because setting up shipping for multiple countries is a pain the butt), or just prefer to purchase something or donate via a different platform, I also have PayPal and Venmo (@ JessieLynnMcMains).
I also have a Substack newsletter. I try to send something out at least once a month. Sometimes it's a longer piece about music and nostalgia (I recently started a series called These Fucking Songs, for just that purpose), sometimes it's just updates on what I'm up to, sometimes it's something else. I'm currently working on one about poetry, and my writing process, and revision.
Tumblr media
As if that weren't enough, this month I'm doing a 30/30 on the Tupelo Press site, which not only means I have to write a poem every day to be posted the next day, but I am also fundraising for Tupelo Press. My goal is to raise $350 by the end of the month. You can follow along with my daily poems here (the newest is always at the top; scroll down to read previous days), and the fundraising page is here. (I'm also offering some cool incentives for people who donate; more info about all that is available on the fundraising page.)
I'm pro-trans, pro-vaccine, pro-sex worker, pro-abortion, pro-Black Lives Matter. I'm for harm reduction for any drug user or addict, meaning I want them to be able to use drugs as safely as possible, rather than forcing them into rehab or incarcerating them. I'm anti-censorship and anti-fascist. I believe everyone, everyone, should have a safe place to sleep and enough to eat without having to earn it. I consider myself an anarcho-socialist, basically, but I do vote. I'm telling you all that because if you are vehemently against any of those things, we'll probably not get along.
Tumblr media
I'm a forever-goth/punk who loves all kinds of music. (Things on heavy rotation for me as I write this are: The Replacements, Einstürzende Neubauten, and Oliver Nelson.) I'm femme but I'm a disaster femme; when I use nailpolish it's always sloppy and/or chipped, when I wear eyeliner it's always crooked and/or smeared, and I am incapable of not ripping a hole or two in every pair of tights and stockings I own. I love art and film and theater and literature and music. I'm a Shakespeare stan, I love growing my own vegetables, I collect souvenir pennies and stick and poke tattoos. I'm always a slut in theory, even when not always in practice. I'm perpetually nostalgic, melancholy, and restless. I spend all my free time posting pictures of myself on the internet and trying to prove I'm punk to anyone that'll listen.
Want more Jessie content? There's my website (still under construction, but it exists). Or you could try searching the my writing, my art, Jessie Lynn McMains, or Rust Belt Jessie tags on this blog. I also have a side blog, where I tend to post more frequently than I do on this blog. If you ask nice, I'll probably give you the URL.
On that note, my DMs and asks are open, and, as of right now, anon is on.
I think that's it! As always, whether you can send any $$ my way (or to my fundraiser) currently or not, keeping this post circulating helps. Thanks much. 🖤

There are two councils in Earthbread unknown to all cookies, even the ancient heroes.
The first is of the legendaries, formed by Millenial Tree, who unite to see that the balance remains stable and the life of the cookies are not affected.
The second is the dragons, formed by Longan Dragon at the time, the legendary dragons unite to see how the dragons were affected by the increase of cookies.
White Lily is part of both councils.
She gets along well with the legendary council, but with the dragons it's a different story.
She is only there as a replacement for Longan's place, because even if she, the dragons or the legendaries don't want her to be, she is the princess and legitimate heir to Longan's empty throne.
Pitaya only remains in the dragon council to prevent them from finding out about their children and the Hollyberry kingdom, because they know or dangerous that it is their own race.
White Lily doesn't know much about what Pitaya does, but she prefers to stay out of other people's business.
White Lily is not the heir of Millenial Tree as she is not the firstborn, but as the bearer of the Soul Jam, she became the main heir of Elder Faerie.

I sincerely hope this project isn't another hollow reboot and actually manages to stand on its own as a piece of media. its been 26 years (holy shit) since the last film and a lot has changed in Hollywood since then.
Toys and action figures have largely been replaced by video games as they've gotten more accessible and impressive in terms of variety and quality. AI is now less of a concept relegated to the distant future and is increasingly taking prominence in daily life.
The film industry as we know it has been impacted by things like COVID and the writer's strike. All this taken into account, it would seem ridiculous to me for this film to retread old territory and simply copy the plot and themes of the original film. It isn't like there's a massive Small Soldiers fandom who would revolt if the original cast didn't return to reprise their roles. That leaves a lot of potential to make something fresh.
What I would like to see is perhaps less focus on the humans, or better yet basically none, with them only entering the story to provide bits of exposition or as comic relief. It would be entertaining to watch bystanders react to being suddenly put right in the middle of a toy war and freaking out.
This could also be an opportunity to do what Toy Story did later in the series, examining the different and conflicting philosophy of duty and destiny, but through the lens of warfare and capitalism. After all, these toys are mass produced products, and they are literal soldiers. This doesn't mean there can't be funny, cool moments, but it can't hurt to have some kind of emotional anchor or underlying thematic concepts to give it more depth and complexity.
I mean, even the short scene where the two (presumably) main characters are facing each other through the glass hints at some shared history or tension that is ripe for exploration. What does a character arc look like for these two? How can our expectations be subverted?
Another thing is, and this might be controversial: no, or very few callbacks to the first movie. If they must, I'd rather they be easter eggs subtly and carefully placed throughout, not constant and obvious, or worked into the plot to get us to go "SEE? omg, remember THIS???" Like, yeah, we know. What else you got?
Lasty, I would appreciate a greater scope in terms of setpieces and location. The last film's setting was fairly localized to one neighborhood, which made sense for that story. Where else could they go? A skate park? Sewers? A cornfield maze? Can they livestream on Twitch? Hack into (and fight on top of,) a drone, or a tesla? Just go crazy with it.
Small Soldiers was one of my favorite movies growing up largely because I was a fan of Toy Tory as a child and this was largely billed as an edgier, more "grown up" version of it. But apart from the edge it honestly lacked a lot of substance. There wasn't much going for it outside of 90s nostalgia that really makes it worth revisiting.
But we have so much of that already, as millenials and elder millenials are becoming the target demographic for media since we're now at the age where a lot of us have kids and careers and are desperate for familiar images and memories to throw money at. I hope this isn't another dumb uninspired cash grab but maybe that's askin for too much.
Guess we'll see.

baked po-tay-toes
one of the god-tier foods on the planet; fluffy, customizable, fairly easy/low-effort but can be given fancier jackets and warm and comforting.
I think that describes my core pretty well. A human-sized hobbit. I like sci-fi and fantasy of most types. I use my potato powers to play games of all kinds but I do have many favorite franchises and then just a lot of random things I’ve tried with friends (my avatar is a screencap from the Crusader Kings III loading screen that makes me laugh the most, the aesthetic is very, “I’ve had enough of your shit Eustace, come and say that to my face”). Keep reading for the deep dive, no promises on rambling.
Call me Ashlynn, or Ash, I call myself Ash a lot. She/her/they, a millenial verging on that elder line, bi-pan romantic, agender femme comfortable (femme euphoria is *chef’s kiss*), demisexual riding my starship through the internet voids. 99.99% autist (self-dx, always trying to keep learning to make sure the brain gremlins stay somewhat contained *lolsob*at the even more likely audhd combo and the constant brainfight between Order and ~*chaos*~). Is that why we all love to hyperfocus on mythology? The eternal struggle between divine order and chaos?
Even now I’m reigning in the urge to get side-tracked when this was supposed to be straight-forward, a little fun ‘hello’ and now I want to write ten-thousand essays all at once. It’s why I tend to lurk (bringing it back). I’ve been on Tumblr a long-time and quit during the great banning of tiddies protest in whatever 20-year that was. I wasn’t super involved anyway. This was once a blog where I role-played as Marius from AR’s Vampire Chronicle’s. That used to be a huge pass-time of mine actually, text-based RPG’s on forums (anyone remember Avidgamers/Acornrack? That’s like the real deep cuts of forum-based rpg-ing and it was so cute and customizable in an early internet Myspace sort of way. I would say it’s collapse definitely taught me some deep lessons about retaining data/copies because it was literally there one day and gone the next with zero warning and just so many beautiful things and connections lost to the void). I really sympathize with (some) Twitter users and (most) Reddit users that either have already had that happen or are precariously on the verge of having that happen. Here’s hoping that Tumblr isn’t on the verge of tripping right when I was getting back to it.
I decided just to private the RPG posts, there aren’t that many it wasn’t really my main Tumblr blog at the time of the great logging out. The trend of Tumblr RPing was fun though, I don’t know if that’s still a thing people do actively or seek out but I guess I’ll find out. I think that’s enough to start, see ya’ out there.

Tuca and Bertie went from being the adult animation revolutionary series to be (one of) the most important animated show aimed to adult people on media now. Season 2 picked up where we left: Bertie (Ali Wong) on her own pastry business and Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) trying to improve as a person, which this season makes focus. Speckle (Steven Yeun) remains where he comfortably is: being a supportive and cute sidekick. After a rough path on limbo thanks to Netflix' cancelling the show, Adult Swim picked it up as a valued player and let Lisa Hanawalt continue her story about the songthrush and the toucan.
Tumblr media
The main thread of this season is Tuca and how she wants to be commited to a relationship like her bestie Bertie. She tries the reality show way on the Sex Bus, date apps, until she meets a nurse named Kara while visiting Aunt Tallulah. They fall on each other and start dating, but this relationship becames co-dependent and even toxic when Kara stops Tuca to be herself and transforms the hyperactive toucan into someone Kara would like to be. This ship becomes toxic and finally Kara dumps Tuca before moving in with her in a very, very shitty way. Tuca also does wacky things this season, but she has time to tell Aunt Tallulah off again and reconecting with her elder sister Terry and her niece on their own version of Halloween.
Tumblr media
The main characters are millenials on their early 30s and having the same age of them I can feel identified on how this item is tackled (and many others I'll tell y'all later). Knowing someone and start great but then one of them shows their fangs and this becomes a one way relationship that sooner or later ends badly. And the crew did a great job on Kara (Nicole Byer) portraying as someone you really want Tuca to be with to a toxic and revealing her true facade: a controlling and self centric woman who wants people to be around her. Hopefully Tuca can grow again and be happy as we saw on a flashback of Bertie meeting Speckle on a party with her, but there's a lot to go through.
Tumblr media
Bertie has less development, but she made a great first step: going to the shrink and talk about things that give her anxiety and how to fight them. One of them is Pastry Pete's reapperance after being cancelled for sexually harrasing Bertie. But therapy made her face things like her parents for the first time and their lousy role when she was abused at the lake when she was 12. They didn't believe her and she had to carry all that guilt and pressure of her parents pushing her to excel and not letting Roberta to be herself. And don't forget her co-dependant relationship with Tuca and some bumps when she is with Kara, or holding her move to the house Speckle bought.
Tumblr media
Bertie and Speckle are one of the healtiest couples ever on animated shows, like Josh and Emily of Close Enough for example. Both are very supportive of each other, they have their doubts and struggles, but they help to deal with them. Or commit to please one another too, like Speckle going to buy that fancy door knob far far away.
Tumblr media
And there is a whole arc that involves all main characters: gentrification. Represented by an annoying moss, T&B tackles the process of gentrification on neighbourhoods. This is: real estate investors buying properties on certain zones that are neglected on purpose by (generally right winged) goverments. Investors buy cheap, but change the population of those zones by making buildings fancy and trying to attract higher class tennants or people who rent. What happens to low and low-middle class people? They're forced to leave on more neglected hoods because they can't afford living there anymore. Capitalism at its best!
Tumblr media
Moss *buys* Tuca and Bertie's building and Bertie has to move. Tuca plans to do the same soon, but in the meanwhile a Valley Girl moves into what was Bruce's the creep apartment and no one likes her because she doesn't fit there. Then Moss expands to all Bird Town, something that the Mayors (who are Tuca's twin siblings) let happen because basically they didn't care, and too much moss caused a ginormous flood that basically destroyed the city in the season finale. Because social issues are part of what is being a millenial and this one involved everyone in the town which is a thing that isn't treated so much in adult animation (except Simpsons who have many episodes about that).
Tumblr media
This review of Tuca and Bertie's second season reflects how important is this show. I really love this show, it keeps getting better and better and not surprised on how the people who made Bojack Horseman could nail another great series on a row. Friendship, romance, gentrification and wackiness on 22 minutes of the best adult animated show at the moment which will come back in some time for Season 3 (take that Netflix!).

OnS Theories (8S). Second Theory - Nonhuman yet owning a beautiful human heart
Hello everyone! We’re getting closer to the date of release but before that, I’d like to share some thoughts I’ve come across different people, the story itself and so on.
First, if any of the readers have felt insulted or anything, I apologize, it is not my intention to offend you by any means; but I’d like to know what you think guys, I’ve had fun writting down the theories and I’m forever thankful that you read them so, please, don’t hesitate to share your views, thoughts about the story and more.
Let’s begin!
To start off with this theory, many have come to a resolution that many cast members within the story are not human at all, the case goes for Yu, Guren, Mika, Shinoa, Mahiru, etc.; of course, all of them had relation with certain experiments or even the way they were born but for now, let’s focus on those who are no longer labeled as humans.
What makes someone human?
First, if many recall, the song X.U, main theme of OnS stated that pain was part of being human but funny enough, every single member within the story have endured hardships, they’ve fought until they couldn’t keep going, which means their emotions faded away through time; but yet, their hearts that become cold still give warm towards those around them and the fact that others care deeply for them is a sign they’ve left a scar/a mark within the others in the story; therefore there are some exceptions of non humans such as:
Yuichiro Hyakuya, Mikaela Hyakuya, Shinoa Hiragi, Krul Tepes, Guren Ichinose and Ashera Tepes.
That being said, let’s start with each of these characters:
Yuichiro Hyakuya/Yuichiro Amane
So far, we’ve known that Yu was created millenials ago and until the current era, a new Yu was born, whenever he was born by natural ways or experiments it is unclear, and yes, many will state that he might have been created the same way but, the sole difference between the previous clones and the current ones, is the fact that the current Yu developed a soul, developed feelings of attachment, developed a warm heart, he is selfless, he doesn’t mind helping others, he doesn’t mind being used if the cause is for a greater good; the point he reaches can be scary and mainly because Mika, his last member of the Hyakuya orphanage left worries that Yu will do something reckless to the point of self sacrifice and indeed, it is not far from the truth but at the same time; he among the rest of the squad see Yu as someone wonderful, someone that even that gave away his humanity is pretty much considered a human being.
But, what makes Yu a human? Simple, Yu has endured a harsh path, he’s being painfully used to huge causes that remain as a mystery for now but despite that, he always tries his best to live, he seeks to reach that gold end along his new family, to the point he’ll risk anything to see them happy.
The fact that he transforms into a seraph is just a representation that his will stands strong for those he loves; and love among other emotions play a role within a human heart.
Mikaela Hyakuya/Mikaela Shindo
Mika is one of the characters that many readers love, but what makes Mika a human when he’s a vampire that is slowly losing his emotions?
First of all, we learnt throguh the story how he grew up, how he ended up at dead’s gates until Krul saved his life by turning him into a vampire despite his sole refusal of it.
After he turned into a complete vampire, we’ve seen how he slowly became methodic, careful, cold minded unless something happens towards his last family member; but still, the fact that Mika tries his best to understand Yu’s view, the fact that he hangs around Yu’s family despite how he sees human in the current time...what vampire could do that?
Current vampires don’t care about human bonds, nor care about what they think or feel yet, Mika tries his best to support his sole family and his new friends despite him not trusting them; indeed, there are reasons why Mika doesn’t trust humans but within those reasons, there’s a part of him that, to certain extend, values the fact that Yu’s friends are there with him.
Mika has been a special kid mainly for holding two traits, the Michaela trait and the seraph trait; the efforts of Rigr for bringing a new Michaela to Earth but of course, Mika can’t be that Michaela and why’s that? Mika harbors his own soul, he is no one else but him, despite being a vampire, his soul lingers within him which is why he expresses his emotions comapred to other vampires, he still values life itself despite the harsh past he had to overcome.
Shinoa Hiragi
Many will wonder what makes Shinoa human despite being possessed or more likely seeing a character so detached until meeting Yu and company, (no, this is not focused on shipping). Shinoa’s existance was of someone to be used as a vessel for the first which in fact, has been the fallen Michaela that gave blood to the vampires making them crave for it; to certain extend it is almost clear that Shinoa’s creation was not of a conventional way and this is mainly by a sole expression Noya left within chapter 85, when Shinoa called Mahiru elder sister, Noya seemed confused about it, stating that he didn’t see Shinoa as someone instead something that took a physical appearance of a human but well, what makes her human?
If the experiments within her never happened nor Mahiru died, she would have grown in a rather more confident person with vivid emotions; but due to many issues, her emotions had to be sealed in a way and this was thanks to Mahiru, she wanted to let Shinoa live her lfie without a worry of what went beyond the Hiragi family, but no one can’t escape from their duties or fate itself. We’ve seen someone that was detached to someone who cares deeply towards her squad.
The fact that she developed emotions towards others, the fact that she is willing to help those around her is a proof that her human heart is constantly evolving even if it’s little by little.
Krul Tepes and Ashera Tepes
These brothers are the cutest within the story for how close they were and yet, despite the distance that have been taken to the current time, the fact that Krul cares and tries her best to find her brother and bring him back is one of the proofs that she has a human heart despite being alive over thousand of years.
Krul can be perceived as someone who might be detached, cold, and merciless but despite that, there’s a soft side of her, she knows that among vampires, she can’t trust no one in particular specially that many of her actions have been labelled as taboo but despite that, she found solance within Mikaela; Mika has been a figure of her trust despite how she has treated him; in a way she cared for him, and that trust is well reflected on how she gives information about the decisions that would eventually lead them to war, how with just her looks can give signs to Mika remarking their bond.
In case of Ashera, that level of trust can be reflected with Yu, at the beginning Ashera behaved pretty much like other demons, trying to possess its host but with time, Ashera’s heart changed so much, it evolved to simple relation of demon and host to friends; Ashera cares deeply about Yu and that is reflected in the past and the present, their bond has been forged with trust;
Even before becoming a demon, Ashera as a vampire cared deeply about Yu’s well being, he didn’t mind expressing his emotions despite becoming a being whose years wouldn’t matter any longer, he tried to live through inmortality along with his sister; and the fact that the first person he recalls is his sister just gives how much meaning she left within his heart.
As a personal thought, If Ashera manages to break free from the cursed gear, I’d like to see them interact one last time before anything happens.
Guren Ichinose
Lately, he’s the character who has been most controvertial mainly for the actions he has taken towards Yu who the same one considers as family since Guren have helped Yu to stand up, to fight up for all he holds dear, but at the same time, Guren’s someone who has suffered enough, he has to keep as a remembrance the fact that his friends won’t live for long, their time is counted and the only solution for that is to resurrect the whole world.
Guren’s evolution as a character comes from someone that tried his best to not get involved with those who served the Hiragi family to the point he ended up making bonds with time, until the inevitable end came; Guren was allowed to finally cry after the end of the world came, but he knew very well that it was just the beginning of a new chaos that would eventually unfold to the current time inside of the story.
What makes Guren a human being?
His suffering? Indeed it is a part of it but the fact that makes him human is the fact that he still tries his best to save those around him even if it means going alone, even if it means breaking more and more in order to make those he treasures to keep living a little longer; he’s well aware of what Yu means to him, he knows what kind of reaction Yu would have if he were to die and he’s aware that Yu will do his best to save him in order to keep living but at the same time, he has had enough, he has fought for so long, his human heart has gotten tired but not tired in the term of giving up, he’s a fighter who has endured many hardships alone and the fact that the current chapters show him again as an antagonist it’s just a proof he’ll give Yu something which is valued as a final lesson; it will be the cruelest but he’s pouring all the hardships in order to make Yu understand what it’ll be like to face the final enemy of humanity.
What do you think guys? I want you to share your thoughts about these characters, what other things make them human for you? Who else comes to your mind!!

Things I Love About Writing Beetlejuice Fan Fiction.
Lydia:
Writing Lydia is a good excuse to spend hours looking through Goth fashion websites…
…and then end up never explicitly mentioning much Goth fashion in what I write.
Lydia Deetz works perfectly as a disaffected and nihilistic Zoomer…
…because she feels so deeply and genuinely underneath her bluster that she’s a great character to empathize with.
The musical and the fandom has made a lot of room to take seriously the feelings of a depressed teenage girl…
…WITHOUT over-dramatizing them, or glamorizing mental health issues, or acting like she can’t also just sometimes be a ridiculous and foolish 15-year-old who should be protected at all costs.
 Beetlejuice:
Beej is somehow four years old, 29 years old, and 3000 years old at the same time and I love it.
His ability to be a source of body horror and meta jokes is a blessing and a curse.
He is enough of a jerk that it is fun to write him acting like a jerk, but he is also redeemable enough that it is fun to force him to apologize and make amends when he goes too far.
Is he a demon? Is he a ghost? Was he ever alive? Did he used to work for Juno like he did in the movie? That’s up to you, fan fiction writers!
Adam and Barbara:
They are such sweethearts. They care deeply for their family. It is so wholesome to spend time in their heads.
And yet they are in love with the Garbage Ghost. Beetlands is the weirdest, best ship I’ve shipped in a long time.
The musical did a great job of pivoting from 1980’s yuppies to making them the epitome of Elder Millenials. (“What about global poverty? What about world peace? Then there’s the whole darn economy! The whole Middle East!” “What’s the point of having children if we’re drowning in debt?”)
It is such a relevant vibe.
 Charles and Delia:
Their “opposites attract” relationship is fun. It’s just fun.
Delia’s desperate positivity is a good contrast with the rest of the cast.
As is Charles’s stoicism, especially in a musical where the other main characters each belt at least one emotional soliloquy.
The musical treats them more like actual characters with depth than the movie did, which gives me more to work with.

Deciphering rise of BTS through their content
Korean Culture
Koreans are deeply influenced by the Confucian philosophy, which emphasizes cultivated knowledge in comparison to creativity and a collectivistic society. Which is quite different from the Western thought.
Despite the political unrest after the Korean War that resulted in the division of the region, these two countries still share the same culture and traditional values.
The French Institut national de l'audiovisuel defines K-pop as a "fusion of synthesized music, sharp dance routines and fashionable, colorful outfits”. Songs typically consist of one or a mixture of pop, rock, hip hop, R&B, and electronic music genres.
The Confucian thought has a huge influence on Eastern political ideas; shaping the moral system, the way of life, social relations between old and young and their work ethic.
This gives us some insight about the highly systemized, regulated k-pop industry owned by three big names YG, SM JYP. That control every aspect of artist’ career to control publishing, licensing and advertising and in the end operating a star-making academy leaving the artist with no creative freedom.  These trainees are put through years of intense musical and chorographical training; they have to sacrifice all guarantees of personal freedom, sleep and comfort. These trainees are monitored for height, weight and figure; they are put through extreme diet regimes, sometimes get plastic surgery done to resemble anime like body proportions. --- to produce idol groups designed to present the very highest standards of beauty, dance, and musicality in Korean popular music.
Korean pop stars have become cultural icons in the region and globally.
Kpop and BTS:
The Korean Wave Hallyu refers to the global popularity of South Korea’s cultural economy exporting pop culture, entertainment, music, TV dramas and movies since 1990s. And since 2000, the Korean government invests great sums in the country’s pop culture to appeal to an international audience. The South Korean government has dedicated a department solely to K-pop to promote the music in Korea and beyond.
It was within this environment that in 2010, a man named Bang Si-hyuk began to quietly build a different kind of studio, and to cultivate the band that would become BTS. His belief is to give the members creative freedom to work on solo tapes, producing and writing. BTS was first launched in 2013.
Where other modern day boy/girl bands have stuck to singing about love and heartache, from the beginning he has encouraged BTS to tell personal stories, and made it imperative to speak about things the group is feeling individually, in a whole that is the reason for the socially critical and introspective lyrics. Honest musical expression of one’s creative anxieties — would become a crucial element of BTS.
BTS is inspired by a hip-hop trio called Seo Taiji & Boys in 1990s who challenged norms around musical styles, song topics, fashion, and censorship, which was unprecedented for a culture whose musical production had spent the past few decades subjected to strict government oversight. They are considered pioneers of rebel music against the system in K-pop.
Seo Taiji, who’s been called the ‘Culture President, recently proclaimed Bangtan Sonyeondan (BTS) to be the true heirs of the original Korean pop ethos he gave birth to decades previously. While collaborating with BTS on his 25th anniversary on his song “ Classroom Idea”, which criticizes the oppressive education system of Korea. This song was written by Seo Taiji in 1994 when all teenagers were forced to stay in school from 7 am to 9 pm. For people without a college degree it would be hard to get jobs, they’d be treated as underdogs, paid no respect, and kept invisible in the society. (Video will be played and explain from it)
Education is considered crucial because of the Confucian tradition of respecting, learning and the particular national desire for greater achievements.
From BTS’ 2013 album O!RUL8,2? song N.O. also talks about students being overwhelmed by the expectations placed on them by elders, and the effect it has on their mental wellbeing. (in relation with the education system, BTS also has a song for it)
Then their 2015 album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2; entails one of their most political song “Silver Spoon” or “Baepsae” it’s a bird in Korea translated as “Crow Tit” which is a small bird, considered as a weak one compared to a stork, crow tit has short legs and a stork has very long legs. The idiom goes “ a crow tit following a a stork will tear its legs”. Meaning when you try to do something out of your reach or capabilities you are likely to fail. Here storks are referring to people in power; big companies, conglomerates and the older generations. The crow tit being the younger generation. (they flap their hands like birds in their choreography).
They also use the metaphor of a teacher to refer to the older generation who are born with a golden spoon. So during the age of the storks or baby boomers (Baby boomer is a term used to describe a person who was born between 1946 and 1964) in South Korea they were experiencing huge economic growth and was extremely easy to get jobs, housing etc. But the economy of South Korea is now maturing and the side effects of ultra-fast economic growth have boomeranged to haunt the current generation. Millenials are facing high pricing of houses as well as high disparity between the rich and the poor and also all-time high youth unemployment.
Lyric, ‘Passion pay’ is a common practice in Korean society where companies pay young workers below minimum wage or nothing at all in return for experience. (lyrics will be shown in slide)
Speaks much about our society’s treatment to interns who go into the field to work. And the ‘given up generation’ saying that millennials are the generation who have given up on what may be considered as basic human rights and wants because of extreme high youth unemployment rates.
Sam-po-sadae (show the lyrics here) (read from ppt and explain these things gen Z has given up on). Millennial's giving up of romantic relationships, marriage, children, proper employment, homes, and social life in the face of economic difficulties and societal ills while facing condemnation from the media and older generations.
Then they go on to say that they want to change the system. Like this is not a normal situation. Society is sick but it also says we are not at the top yet and we have to push further. (video played and then this is explained).
Then BTS addresses how the older generation blames the millenials for their struggles saying that it is due to the lack of effort. Baby boomers seem to neglect the fact how society is completely different now compared to when they were growing up, also their economic situation is different. Saying that a lot of the problems millenials face today were infact caused by the baby boomers. But they seem to ignore this fact and tell the crow tits to work harder, try harder, put more effort.
Moving on to to their newer album “Wings”, song Blood Sweat tears, which is rich in literary and art references. Wings album is based on “Demian” a 1919 Herman Hesse novel that explore the psyche of the narrator as he grows up and loses his innocence and is on a journey to find himself. The ideologies presented in Demian are heavily influenced by the German philosopher Nietzsche. Nietzsche often wrote about the creation of the self. And more of his ideas in grounds of self-realization is central to Demian. (video playing in bg) There are motifs of mentorship shown in the video when each younger member is paired with an elder one. Jin the oldest member seen standing alone admiring the painting of the fall of rebel angels, the battle between good and evil. While gazing at this painting, Bminor plays in the background. Jin stands between two door, black and white, one good one evil. In Demian, Sinclair finds some freedom when Demian introduces him that the world cannot be categorized in binary such as good and evil. But rather there is good in all evil and evil in all good.
This concept is represented by the God called Abraxas, the god is nor good or evil but rather the affirmation of the existence of both. Saying that Sinclair will never find himself if he only acknowledges the realm of light he must seek knowledge and learn of both realms.
On the surface level one would say the song is about the dangers of temptation but through the imageries a lot of symbolism is shown, allusions from multiple sources of literature each symbol works harmoniously to create a larger system of meaning.
And their latest album Map of the Soul: Persona, based on archetypes of Carl Jung; is where they identify their stage persona as one part of their whole identities.
So as we see every succeeding album of BTS, one would witness the gradual growth of its members. With group and solo songs of each artist addressing issues like depression, anxiety, social and political injustice. Every member’s own identity plays a crucial role in building themes and concepts for their albums. And how they face these experiences that life brings them is translated in their albums.
Bringing us to the question, what is the machinery behind this idol group?
This boy band is still under a company which has its own producers. Bang-si-Hyuk (the founder), Pdogg (in house producer), Slow Rabbit (producer), Adora,Supreme Boi are the main producers. Main choreographer is Son Sung-deuk and J-Hope (member) takes part in choreography too (as he was a stret dancer earlier). Some members of the group have been credited as producers, RM, Suga, J-Hope and Jungkook.
The Korea Music Copyright Association attributes over 130 songs to RM as songwriter, composer, also including writing for member Jimin's solo song "Promise". The Korea Music Copyright Association attributes over 85 songs to Suga as a songwriter and composer. Suga won the 2017 MAMA (Mnet Asian Music Awards) best producer award for the song Wine. J-Hope produced his mixtape ‘Hope World’. Jungkook produced Magic Shop.
The group’s high-quality visual productions, largely produced by South Korean creative agency Lumpens, are frequently related to the themes of the band’s music. The agency has produced the visuals for some of their hits like Idol, DNA, Serendipity, I NEED U, Fake Love (Forbes article)
Pdogg production in "Love Yourself: Tear" with BTS hit the Billboard 200 albums chart and was nominated for Grammy Awards.
In an interview he was asked, to drop a hint about the sort of music BTS will come up in the future.
He replied, because a new series has started with ‘Love Yourself 承 Her’, we are planning to continue that. After that, [the decisions] will change based on BTS’ situation and the members’ sentiments at that point. The members put a lot of effort to make sure their characteristics can be shown through their music’.
The concept and themes the group work on for their albums come from them. Though the production may not be solely done by them. The ideas originated from the members are worked upon by the members alongside the company.  The ultimate example of the members’ creative independence from their company is their personally composed, freely released mixtapes. They reflect each member’s individual personalities and creative orientations.
Bang-si-Hyuk gave BTS autonomy to run their own Twitter and vlog from their studio, and for the rappers to write alongside Big Hit’s in-house production team.
Since 2000, the Korean government invests great sums in the country’s pop culture to appeal to an international audience. The South Korean government has dedicated a department solely to K-pop to promote the music in Korea and beyond. These cultural exports have benefited the economy and country. BTS have become the youngest ever recipients of the Hwagwan (Korea’s) Orders of Cultural Merit for their services to the promotion of Korean pop culture and Hangul, the Korean alphabet.
How is bts so popular?
“We came together with a common dream to write, dance and produce music that reflects our musical backgrounds as well as our life values of acceptance, vulnerability and being successful,” said BTS’s leader, RM, in a 2017 interview with Time. Their latest record, Map of the Soul: Persona, made them the second group in history to have three No. 1 albums in a single year—the first was the Beatles.
There are six main ways BTS breaks with established precedent for K-pop boy bands to carry out this mission:
·        They frequently write their own songs and lyrics.
·        Their lyrics are socially conscious and especially attuned to describing the pressures of modern teen life in South Korea.
·        They create and manage most of their own social media presence.
·        They aren’t signed to “slave contracts,” nor do their contracts have the grueling restrictions of other idol groups.
·        They tend to focus on marketing entire albums rather than individual singles.
·        They talk openly about the struggles and anxieties of their career instead of presenting an extremely polished image at all times. (To be said- Rap Monster also differentiated the group by taking an open stand in favor of LGBT rights, a topic which is still highly incendiary in South Korea. Idols typically don’t take sides in such topics.)
A lot of these elements have been present in other k-pop groups- most notably Big Bang, which influenced BTS more than any other k-pop band. But Big Hit Entertainment systemized these elements in BTS and marketed it hard.
BTS has broken several charts records during each come-back in 2016 and 2017, not only locally but also internationally. Unlike other K-pop fandoms, BTS fans, span every age, gender and ethnic group -- BTS is not a teenage phenomenon, it is an intellectual phenomenon. Language barrier is no hinderance to spreading their message by their active fanbase who translate lyrics, make video compilations and create fan fiction about the band. Their messages penetrate through language, age, ethinicity and gender (need to add videos of older people attending their concert).
Even before their debut in 2013, they already had contents such as covers and dance practices, published through several medias (Youtube, blog, Twitter...). They have constantly tried to update fans on their activities through planned and unplanned interactions. The boy group was one of the first artists featured in the live broadcasting application launched by Naver in August 2015, V App. BTS’ social angle is always cited by the ARMY as the top reason for their ardent support.
This worldwide popularity is confirmed by their growing strength on social media (linked in article).
Besides being crowned music’s hereditary princes by Korea’s "President of Culture” Seo Taiji, some other prominent supporters of BTS include Korean music critics, philosophers, Jungian psychologists, Brazilian authors, American painters.
That BTS happen to have a small, intimate team to aid them in the production endeavour which does not make their work any less authentic, and it differs fundamentally from other K-pop companies.
K-pop, which has swelled in the past five years from a niche genre to a $5 billion global industry. “Somebody always has to be the one to walk down that path and cut through the jungle and make some noise, and I think that group [was] BTS,” says Phil Becker, vice president for content at Alpha Media, which owns 68 U.S. radio stations.
America and the UK have been the powerhouses of popular music — only three of the 30 highest selling artists of all time have come from elsewhere. It means that the dominance, in terms of both cultural influence and commercial prowess, has been held firmly within the grip of the West. In 2019, BTS came second on the worldwide list of best-selling artists across physical, digital and streaming platforms, beaten only by the all-conquering Drake. BTS have almost single-handedly pulled things back towards the East.

“Let’s Play a Game” pt.9
Here is the next part! Hope you enjoy!
-
“Hm… that’s a good choice, a very good one.”
“Is it really that much different from the other one?”
“The end result isn’t much different, but the winning option gives them a chance to unlock another flashback scene!”
“Oh? Which one is that?”
“It’s a secret~ I’ll tell you later during break. For now, let’s get a move on. I’m sure they’re curious to know how the story will progress!”
If anything, this goes to show that the worst option wasn’t chosen this round, so the game was going to continue. Remember to be careful about what options you choose in the future. If you pick too many of the worst possible options, it will result in the ‘death’ end and the game will force close!
That has been another warning for you, do be careful! Be mindful of the hints that the Moderators drop for you!
BEEP!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Where are my souvenirs? Don’t tell me that you forgot?” Shen Yuan asked with the smallest of pouts on his face. If there was anything that Shen Jiu was weak to, it was Shen Yuan adopting his younger brother role.
Of course, his brother would never admit to it, but Shen Jiu did enjoy being an older brother. Being able to take care of someone and doing good by them was something that eased the edge off his heart. It helped him feel as though here was a part of him that could do good.
There was someone who believed in him, in his ability to be a good person.
That isn’t to say that Shen Jiu thought himself as a good person by any means. He still thought of himself to be a scummy person, but after he’d met Shen Yuan, he started to feel as though he had a pinky’s worth of goodness in his body.
“I have your souvenirs right here.” Shen Jiu revealed a vibrant red satchel from his sleeve. There was a fragrant smell coming from the satchel that sent a shiver down Shen Yuan’s spine.
The younger of the two brothers accepted the item with trepidation, his eyes narrowing suspiciously at the satchel. He wouldn’t have been suspicious if not for the fragrant smell coming from the satchel. This suspiciously smelled like perfume…?
Something you could smell from a woman.
“Brother… what is this?” He asked slowly, staring at his ‘gift’ with unease.
Shen Jiu was enjoying the unease his brother was currently exhibiting, and he chose not to answer. Instead, he was reorganizing the room to his liking.
Taking the plunge, Shen Yuan opened the satchel to see… was that rouge? Face powder…? This… this is makeup? There’s more in here.
“BROTHER!” The younger brother bristled in annoyance, his tone carrying a hint of an aggrieved whine. What use did he have for make up? He no longer lived in the Red-Light District where he was at the mercy of all the elder sisters there. No longer would he be subjected to being their Barbie doll to play with. “Must you tease me like this? Your younger brother has already extended his heart to you asking for forgiveness, has he not? I am hurt. My honorable brother is finally treating me with such disdain, opting to gift me such a thing. I understand, my brother wishes for me to return to the Red-light district.”
Dramatic.
Shen Yuan was the dramatic sort, and only when the two brothers were alone, he liked to reveal this side of his. Sometimes, his dramatics annoyed Shen Jiu, while at other times, it amused him.
This time, it seemed to be the latter. Shen Jiu’s aim to annoy his brother was a success. He chuckled under his breath, reaching into his sleeves once more to pull out a different satchel, this time, it was green in color.
The color matched the bamboo forest. “Calm down, this is your real souvenir. Hide the makeup elsewhere if you don’t want it.” He lightly tossed the bag to his brother.
In truth, he had bought the make up to get information from those in the marketplace.
The demon was smart with the way he covered his tracks. Unfortunately for the demon, he was up against Shen Qingqiu. With his intelligence, no demon would be able to escape from under his nose.
He managed to find his way to a rouge shop and sniffed out some clues. To loosen the mouth of the shopkeep, he bought some rouge. In the process, he chose to use the gift to tease his brother with. This is what you call a win-win situation.
If he had to guess, if Shen Yuan had been the one to descend from the mountain, he might not have been able to figure out the identity of the demon. He may have even lost his life to the demon, in fact.
It was good that Shen Yuan didn’t replace him on this trip.
Shen Yuan was still feeling miffed by the previous satchel he was given, but he accepted the new satchel easily. The design was pretty, as a bamboo forest was embroidered in the fabric. Both brothers enjoyed the aesthetic of a bamboo forest, so he knew that whatever was inside, Shen Jiu carefully selected for him.
Inside the satchel was an assortment of items. One, was jerky that was carefully wrapped up in a cloth. Another item was a beautifully crafted fan (Shen Jiu likely had a matching one of his own). The last item was ink pots with different colors of ink. This must have been expensive and hard to find.
Shen Yuan spent a lot of his time holed indoors, and he came to enjoy writing and drawing pictures in scrolls. Sometimes he wrote stories he remembered from his life on Earth, or he’d draw images of the things he saw in this world.
Everything was so beautiful in this novel when compared to what he remembered from Earth. The air was polluted, and civilization replaced much of the beautiful scenery you could see in nature.
In a magical world like this, who wouldn’t enjoy the scenery?
You could say that of the twins, Shen Yuan was more gifted in the arts than his elder brother. Similarly, Shen Jiu was the smarter of the two twins. Shen Jiu, the main face of Shen Qingqiu built a reputation of being a strategist due to his brains.
While he didn’t mind dabbling in the arts, he spent most of his time polishing his knowledge. He did have a reputation to maintain, after all.
Of course, that meant that Shen Yuan had to study just as much as Shen Jiu did in order to play the part as Shen Qingqiu well. While he didn’t particularly enjoy studying, he didn’t mind reading piles of books and scrolls.
It was like getting your hand on a book that detailed behind the scenes information on your favorite novel. As a fan, who wouldn’t enjoy such a thing? This world was akin to getting a special OVA of your favorite donghua series, you’re an author making a statement on a question the fans are dying to know!
It was touching to know that his brother went through all that effort to find a gift that he knew that would be appreciated. What was with the jerky, you asked? Shen Yuan was the type of person who enjoyed snacking on things, especially when he was bored. The more flavorful the food was, the more he’d enjoy it.
He personally felt that a lot of the food here was bland, but what could you do about it? They didn’t have all the spices you could find on Modern day Earth.
You can simply chalk it up to the Millenial misses eating all sorts of food. Boba tea, instant ramen, ice cream, etc.
Jerky was something you could carry around with you with ease, so it was essentially like carrying snacks with you wherever you went. It was the closest alternative he had.
This was a rarity for him because Shen Jiu disliked meat jerky. It wasn’t a kind of food that fit the image of a Peak Lord. It was something you’d expect from a common day peasant. As long as Shen Yuan was never caught consuming the said jerky, Shen Jiu wouldn’t have his head for it.
Of course, Shen Yuan knew better than to consume meat jerky in front of others. It would make ‘Shen Qingqiu’ lose so many coolness points.
“Brother, you treat me so well. I am lucky to have a brother who understands my tastes so well.” Shen Yuan was currently praising his brother’s good tastes in souvenirs. Appealing to his brotherly side had its many advantages. For one, it helped Shen Jiu understand that there was another path for him that he could take, although very difficult for him on a personality basis.
Two, it did brighten Shen Jiu’s mood, even if it was by a small percentage… maybe even a fraction of a percentage. He wasn’t an easy man to deal with after all.
Finally, sometimes appealing to his brotherly side would reveal surprising information about Shen Jiu’s character. You could say that after he came to realize that Shen Jiu was not a simple canon fodder character, Shen Yuan was very curious about his backstory.
What secrets were you keeping hidden away? What happened in your past to mold you into a scummy character? Were there dangerous triggers to be aware of? Was there anything in the world that you liked?
All these questions would provide a lot of useful information to Shen Yuan.
Shen Yuan was in a very good mood because of his souvenirs. He was smiling brightly to himself, quietly humming a tune to himself as he started to put the two satchels away. He carefully hid them away in a safe place. Even if one of the satchels contained aggravating items, he still kept it tucked away safely… behind all his books on the shelf.
For the blue satchel, he placed it on the table that he used as a desk. He felt as though he would be dipping into the ink bottles soon, so he chose not to stow it away just yet.
“Brother, you treat me so well, but all I do is cause you trouble with my sickly disposition. How could I repay your good will?” Yes, Shen Yuan was still appealing to Shen Jiu’s brotherly side. Even if they were twins, Shen Jiu had his pride as the ‘older twin.’
He took it upon himself to be the one to protect his younger brother and to guide him to on the ‘right path,’ disregarding how ironic it is for him to do so.
After Shen Jiu finished organizing the room to his liking, he’d sat down on a pillow on the floor. He simply patted the place in front of him, wordlessly telling Shen Yuan to sit down. Being the obedient brother that he was, Shen Yuan sat down to get a palm to the forehead.
“Ow.” “Focus on being healthy, instead of worthless things like that.”
Shen Yuan showed a foolish grin on his face, laughing quietly to himself.
“What’s so amusing to you?” Shen Jiu questioned, eyes narrowing in suspicion.
Within moments, Shen Yuan wiped any emotion off his face and he sat up straight and tall. “I only thought about how lucky I was. Shen Qingqiu would not act on the behalf of another person and not expect a payment in return.”
That was a grand blanket statement if there ever was one, but it wasn’t necessarily wrong. Of course, there were exceptions, but given the character Shen Qingqiu was, he didn’t act if there were no benefits for him. If not that, he was likely acting to give Yue Qingyuan face.
“Right, how was your trip, brother? How did it go? Tell me what happened.” This trip wasn’t written in the original novel, so Shen Yuan didn’t know anything about it. He wanted to know what he missed! He couldn’t hide his excitement, and he didn’t bother with trying. Shen Jiu could read him like a book if he wasn’t diligent in controlling his facial expressions, so there was no point in trying to lie.
As such, Shen Jiu could tell that his brother was genuinely excited to hear about the trip, rather than being more curious about how Luo Binghe was treated.
The elder brother thought back to the contents that transpired during the trip. He tapped his chin with a fan matching one of Shen Yuan’s souvenirs in thought. “Yingying got captured by a demon.”
“Ying-er! I assume she’s safe now? You didn’t report any casualties, so you must have saved her in time.” For a moment, Shen Yuan almost panicked. Keyword, almost. As he said, Ning Yingying should be safe. If she had died, Shen Jiu would have reported so.
Even without that, she was one of the Protagonist’s future wives (one of many), so she had to be safe! There was no way she could die! Still, who knew that such a scene transpired in the original novel?
It was possible that she could have died! Maybe this served as a point in time where Ning Yingying’s affections for the Protagonist grew? That was what Shen Yuan was currently contemplating to himself.
“Yes, she is safe. While we were investigating the nature of the murdered women, she asked to go shopping with that brat. Later, he returned stating that he’d lost her. I almost flogged him to death right then and there.”
A shiver ran down Shen Yuan’s spine. He knew that wasn’t a joke. He had a vague idea why, but his brother had a peculiar interest in Ning Yingying. It was as though he considered her highly in particular for some reason.
He was kind to females in general, but he was very kind to her in particular. Given what he learned from the time he lived in the Red-light district, Shen Jiu had some kind of aversion to males. It wasn’t quite so much that he felt uncomfortable around them, but it was as if there was an underlying fear that he kept hidden deep down.
The man would always be on edge if he were around other males, especially any who had formidable strength. Shen Yuan had always theorized that this was some kind of a post-traumatic stress disorder that came from when he lived in the Shen household.
While he didn’t see much, as he arrived late to the scene, but his brother was in a horrid situation when Shen Yuan first found him. He could only guess what sorts of torment he was subjected to.
It took everything he had to not ask about what happened to Luo Binghe. Yes, Shen Jiu would report if anyone died, but Shen Jiu didn’t think of Luo Binghe as a person. In fact, he was lesser than a horse in his eyes. If he died… Shen Yuan highly doubted it would be reported.
Would you report if you had killed a spider by stepping on it? You wouldn’t.
Having faith in Luo Binghe’s golden plot armor, Shen Yuan patiently waited to hear more of the story.
“I left Ming Fan in charge of the rest of the disciples as I had that brat lead the way to where he’d seen Ying-er last. At that point in time, my nose caught the scent of something familiar. All the deceased women had the same smell to them, and this smell was coming from a rouge shop.” At this point, Shen Jiu realized he didn’t give his brother the background story of what was going on.
“Our client was struggling with women in his household going missing and then being murdered. A girl would disappear for a time, and then reappear later. The peculiar thing was that the body of the deceased would never reappear before someone else went missing. This is an important key point, be sure to remember this. All the victims were young women full of life. None were elderly, and neither were any of the victims male. It’s clear that whoever was murdering all these women, they had a strong preference to females. A curious thing I noted at the time was that all the women were largely lacking in injuries. There were no signs of a struggle to be found on their bodies. Poison, drowning, and strangulation were not methods of killing the women. No bodily harm came to the women either.”
This would rule out a hate crime. If someone had beef with the master of the house, he may target his many wives, and maids. Once caught, they would be murdered gruesomely to make a point. However, this was not the case.
Anyone who was driven to murder from sheer rage wouldn’t stop at just killing people. You would want your target to feel fear and pain. Shen Jiu in particular would want for his enemies to suffer the worst sort of pain before they died.
The lack of poison could reasonably rule out foul play from other members of the household. Jealousy was a dangerous drug that killed many throughout the history of mankind.
Drowning and strangulation were other possible means of foul play, but there were no signs of this on any of the bodies. It was as if all the women simply died.
Of course, as a cultivator, it was not so easy to hide certain traces. All the women were lacking in vital energy. They were sucked dry. There was a bloody smell on all the deceased women, that only a cultivator with a keen sense of smell could pick up on. The corpses all had a pungent smell that masked the scent of blood and decay.
How contradictory for the women to smell bloody, considering it didn’t appear that any of the women had any outwardly injuries.
Lastly, it was faint… but he noticed the presence of a demon in their midst. This was no work of a human, but a demon. It was possible that all these murders were related to a demon cultivator who needed the human woman for a purpose.
How dare a demon station itself so close to his mountain peak!
Shen Jiu had spent much time with Ming Fan (his Luo Binghe bullying protégée), so the young man learned a lot from him, including what sorts of things to look into. He didn’t have to receive an order from Shen Jiu. He simply went and performed different tasks on his own accord.
The elder twin started to tap his fan against the open-faced palm of his other hand. This was an action he often did when he was idling about.
Amazing how he could talk about such a gruesome case so nonchalantly!
“All the women had a stench of blood on their bodies. It was checked, and their bodies contained blood, so it isn’t the case that the faint stench of blood came from them being drained of their blood. The smell was caused by something else. Another thing to note was that all the murdered women were very similar to each other, not only in age, but in build and height. That is another important thing to note.”
He’d given Ming Fan some instructions when Luo Binghe burst into the room, crying that Ning Yingying had disappeared.
It was regrettable, but Shen Jiu had to put faith in Ming Fan’s abilities to get the job done. He had a lot of investigating to do. Testimonies and alibies to collect.
“That’s the background story of why we descended from the Mountains. I followed the brat and found a rouge shop. The shop-keep also sold an assortment of perfumes. I was made to buy some of his wares to get any relevant information from him. He said that before the murdered women went missing, someone from the mansion would come to buy some of his wares. They’d always purchase the same thing. As a man who’d been at his trade for many years, he’s very confident in his ability to distinguish between people. All the women who visited his shop, purchasing the same item had the same voice and eyes. I’m sure you’ve realized by now, brother… we were dealing with a demon cultivator that used humans to cultivate. I had given the task to Luo Binghe to relay this information to Ming Fan and have him organize the rest of the disciples to ready themselves for battle. Additionally, they were to investigate who had left the premises after our arrival.”
He didn’t know this, but Ming Fan had sent out a disciple himself to relay the information he found to Shen Qingqiu. Luo Binghe and this disciple crossed paths. They exchanged information and turned back around.
“The reason why all the murdered women were similar in height and build was so that he could don the skins of one of his victims and disguise a corpse of a skin that has already served its purpose. He would meticulously and carefully peel the skin off, so none of the corpses looked to have any outwardly injuries. If you looked closely enough, you’d see where he had started his skinning process. If the builds and heights are too different, the skin would not be able to wrap around the corpse of another woman so well. The rouge and perfume with a strong fragrance was used to help mask the natural scent that is unique to each woman, and to hide the stench of blood. Ming Fan was tasked to question the residents of the mansion. He asked about what all the women had been doing before they went missing. Who had they kept in contact with? What were their personalities like? Relationships with each other? Were there any particular traits about each woman that was important to note, like walking habits, the colors of their eyes, their teeth, and more.”
One may think this was overkill, but it wasn’t. This was important to solving the case. Armed with all the knowledge he gained, Ming Fan had once again looked at all the women who had passed on, and noticed that there were inconsistencies with their traits. A woman who was said to have dark brown eyes suddenly had light brown eyes upon death? One woman prided herself of her pearly white and straight teeth had a tooth that was crooked and chipped. Why did one have a crooked finger that’s characteristic of another woman whose finger was crooked because of an old injury she sustained as a child?
After careful inspection, Ming Fan then noticed that their initial verdict of no outward injuries was incorrect.
All of these women had the same cuts on their bodies.
These women were wearing the skins of another. This would explain why a missing woman wouldn’t reappear until another woman went missing. All the reappearances were offset by one missing woman.
One woman was still missing, meaning that the culprit was still looking for another victim to claim for his own needs.
With the information they gathered, it was evident that all the deceased women were not wearing their own skins. As long as the order of the disappearances and reappearances were kept in order, it would be a simple matter to return the skins to the rightful owners.
This way, the women could at least be buried as their own identity, rather than another.
There was no need for fancy technology like DNA testing to solve this case. Shen Jiu was able to use his wits to figure out that the bodies and the skins didn’t match.
This situation always served as a reminder for Shen Yuan that Shen Jiu was an intelligent man who was very quick-witted. It was such a shame that he couldn’t use this brain of his to understand Luo Binghe’s potential and hug his thighs because of it.
Alas, Shen Yuan could only hope to slowly reform Shen Jiu for the better.
Figuratively on the edge of his seat, Shen Yuan wanted to know more about this scene that never showed up in the novel. How did Shen Jiu solve the mystery? What happened to Ning Yingying? Did Luo Binghe offer his aid in saving her? Was he okay?
“With all this information, time was off the essence if we wished to save Ying-er in time. The demon must have decided it had overstayed its welcome knowing that we have descended from the mountain and decided to run away.” The demon has come this far, so it couldn’t have been an ignorant fool who couldn’t tell when danger was nipping at its heels.
Now that the infamous Shen Qingqiu has descended from the mountain, notorious for his strong hatred for demon-kind has arrived, it was no longer safe to continue to prey upon his household.
The demon would have to change tactics and choose a victim that wasn’t related to the household. At this point, it was well-believed that the women were being killed for some kind of personal vendetta against the old man.
If this were ordinary people investigating the case, they would have been successfully lured away, but Shen Jiu wasn’t so easy to fool.
Since the demon had to choose a new target to kill that wasn’t related to the old man, who else but Ning Yingying was the best option? She came down the mountain alongside a powerful Peak Lord. She was of a higher quality compared to the regular people of this town.
Shen Jiu sighed, shaking his head regretfully. He originally allowed her to go shopping alongside Luo Binghe because he felt that the mansion was too dangerous for her to stay in. With women being killed one after another, there was no saying she’d be safe.
They’d just arrived, so word of cultivators arriving to solve the murder series hadn’t spread yet. Assuming that this was an outside job, getting her out of the mansion would keep her safe. Unfortunately, the culprit had already seen Ning Yingying.
An embarrassing oversight on his part, but who would have expected for Luo Binghe to be so useless! He couldn’t even protect a single girl.
“The brat returned much sooner than I expected because he’d met with a messenger halfway. I tasked him to investigate any seemingly abandoned buildings as that would be less conspicuous, making it easier to cultivate humans. Once he found anything, he was to promptly report back. Though lacking, this served as his punishment for losing Ying-er.”
Both brothers knew that while that was partly true, there was another aspect that Shen Jiu was failing to mention. He simply did not want to waste his time and energy in running around chaotically, looking for an abandoned building.
Seeing that Luo Binghe was young and easy to bully, Shen Jiu gave him the task.
Shen Yuan understood this point, but he didn’t point it out, “I see, seeing as she was kidnapped not long after the two went shopping, that means the culprit knew of your arrival. Only those who were in the mansion knew you’ve come as you reported straight to the mansion upon arrival.  Knowing that their cover would soon be blown, the only option available to them is to find another target to kill. Greedy, they set their sights on Ying-er.” This is why Shen Jiu made them investigate anyone who had left the mansion since their arrival.
He never specified they must be women because there was no telling that the demon would have shed their previous victim’s skin off in a fit of desperation. There was no way of telling just yet whether the demon had the ability to manipulate others either.
If the demon had such an ability, it would explain why all the women were killed without much of a struggle at all. Taking this into consideration, it’s possible that the demon could manipulate others into doing its bidding.
“How perceptive of you, brother. I understand. So, I take it Ming Fan narrowed down the suspects and you were able to find a culprit?”
As expected of his younger brother, he was able to catch on. It may have taken him longer to get to the same conclusion as he did, but he figured it out eventually. Saying that Shen Yuan was just as smart as Shen Jiu was too generous, but it was wrong to say that he was an idiot.
He was rather naïve and careless, however.
“Yes, Butterfly, or whatever her name was, she was our prime suspect. I’d waited for Ming Fan to arrive with his fellow disciples. We’d set off to find the brat when we felt a strong surge of demonic energy.” Shen Jiu’s well-formed eyebrows furrowed deep after saying so, which filled Shen Yuan’s heart with dread.
What could have possibly happened for him to make such a face?
Heart palpitations and sweaty palms was highly inelegant, but in the privacy of their room, Shen Yuan frankly didn’t care for appearances at the moment. “… Ying-er… I’m sure she is safe, because brother didn’t report any casualties.”
Shen Jiu’s brows flattened out, his head bobbing once in approval. His brother understood him quite well. He had to give his brother praise for not singling out Luo Binghe at this point in time. “Yes, we made haste to an abandoned building where we witnessed the brat had disobeyed my orders and confronted the demon himself.”
A look of realization dawned upon Shen Yuan’s facial expressions. Anyone who dared to disobey Shen Jiu should expect ‘bad luck’ to grace him until his dying breath. Coupled with the fact that the very one who disobeyed him was the very Luo Binghe he detested… it was obvious to know why Shen Jiu was upset earlier.
“If not for the fact he’d acted against my orders in order to save Ying-er’s life, I would have slaughtered him on the spot.”
The implicit, ‘I can’t harm him in front of Yingying lest I wish her to cry for years to come’ was understood by both parties. You could even say that it was a reward for saving Ning Yingying that spared Luo Binghe’s life.
Shoulders slumped with visible relief. If Shen Qingqiu arrived on the scene, that meant both Luo Binghe and Ning Yingying could rest easy knowing they were saved. Not even Shen Jiu would smite Luo Binghe in a situation like that.
He had an image to keep in front of Ning Yingying, and it would do him more damage to harm her little savior.
“Upon my order, the disciples attacked and made quick work of the demon. We wrapped up and reported back to the mansion. We stayed until Ying-er had recovered enough to travel back up the mountains.” While he didn’t say a word about it, Luo Binghe’s wounds were treated.
Don’t get him wrong, he’d rather leave the brat to suffer his injuries on his own, but Ning Yingying wouldn’t stop crying about it. Luo Binghe put himself at risk to save her.
Tossing a bottle of medicine his way, they returned to the Mansion to tell the old man the ‘good news.’
During the time that Ning Yingying was recovering from her horrific experience, Shen Jiu took the time to scope the various shops that he paid little attention to previously. He never forgot about his other duty, which was to find souvenirs to bring back to his younger brother.
Shen Yuan was content to know that Luo Binghe was okay. Even if his negligence led to Ning Yingying being kidnapped, he still aided in saving her from the demon. That should award him some points in Shen Jiu’s book.
Speaking of getting points… Shen Jiu hadn’t reported to Qiong Ding Peak yet to tell Yue Qingyuan the results of the mission. What did he think about the progress of the disciples? What happened to the demon that was terrorizing the city down below?
It didn’t matter if Shen Yuan hadn’t the slightest of clues as to what relationship the two had, but he wasn’t blind to the fact that Yue Qingyuan held a strong level of importance for Shen Jiu.
There were times that Shen Yuan considered the reason behind the Sect Leader being kind to him was only to garner Shen Jiu’s approval.
“Right, brother, when will you leave for Qiong Ding Peak to report on the events of your trip down the mountain?”
Silence soon made the atmosphere thick with awkwardness, but this was within Shen Yuan’s expectations. Shen Jiu would always react oddly whenever Yue Qingyuan was brought up. Whatever their relationship was, there was a thick tension between them that could be cut with a knife.
“How would you like to go in my stead?”

Headache
This was one of my fanfic, which was favourited by readers on ff dot net and ao3. I thought I'd share it here too. ______________________________
Naruto was all the headache Sasuke needed. Fem!Naruto and Sasuke. Also cameo appearance of Sakura Haruno. It’s a completed story. _______________________________
Waking up with a headache would make you feel like the day was over when it was just about to start. Like any millenials Sasuke’s alarm clock was his phone but somehow he did not hear it this morning despite setting seven alarms. He grabbed for his mobile phone and looked at the time, it was 8.05 am already and he groaned as he had missed his 7 am jog. Sitting up on his bed he palmed his face trying to make sense of his physical situation. He felt his throat parched from dehydration, he shook his head and could feel a little light headed and something did not feel right.
“Babe, are you ok?”
Sasuke looked to his side. None other than a pink haired girl laid next to him scrolling on her phone.
“Sakura?” Sasuke asked. He was still unsure although there was no mistaking the pink hair and aquamarine eyes. Sakura was wearing nothing with the blanket up to her armpits and when she saw his questioning gaze she sat up and sidled to him.
“What’s wrong? You were so sure about me staying here last night?” Sakura asked perplexed.
“No, not that. I…” Sasuke was rendered speechless. He could not remember how they had ended on bed together. He looked at Sakura, his childhood friend, his housemate and as she grasped for his shoulder the blanket on her chest fell down to expose Sakura’s chest which revealed that she was actually wearing a tube. Sasuke sighed in relief.
Sakura noticed the sigh and then she too sighed from realization. “Well I should have guessed that you might not remember anything immediately. You told me to stay here before you slept, oh you were so sick last night.” Sakura placed the back of her hand on Sasuke’s forehead and looked at a spot on the far wall, “your fever came down but I think you better get yourself to the clinic today.“
Sasuke watched Sakura got up and walked to a nearby chair and grabbed a pastel pink jacket which was draped over it. She lifted it pushed her hands into the sleeves and started buttoning up.
“I can’t be late for my binge studying so I better get my book and back to Lee’s, I’ll just knock my knob off the door and fix it later. Order something to eat Sasuke, your fridge is empty and if you find my keys anywhere text me ok.” Sakura said as she wore the jacket and then headed over Sasuke to peck his forehead. “Babe, don’t scare me like yesterday. Take care.”
Sakura grinned at him and exited the room leaving Sasuke alone. Sasuke yawned and looked around his room. He then laughed and shook his head when he finally realized what happened last night. He was alone at home in the house he shared with Sakura and Kiba. Sakura was a medic student, while Kiba took Veterinary and Sasuke Journalism, so they mixed and studied with different crowds. They housed together after knowing each other for so long and because they agreed upon the apartment which was not so far from their campus.
Sasuke’s situation started two days ago.The raven haired man was studying for his finals when he suddenly felt feverish, so he grabbed two fever pills and popped them down his mouth. After an hour nothing changed and he felt his condition getting worse. Sasuke rarely gets sick but when he fell sick he usually ended up with a week long fever. This was his fever for this year so he did not think much about it earlier and continued to study for his final examination which was three weeks away.
The dark haired continued to ignore his own body’s plight and stayed in his bed trying to make sense of his note when Sakura came home from her study sessions. She went to study with her classmates Lee and Neji at Lee’s house. However last night Sakura returned to fetch her forgotten textbook but she forgot to bring her keys. So she texted Sasuke and luckily the man was home. What was supposed to be just a quick trip home for a book ended up with Sakura taking care of Sasuke.
Sakura was busy too but when she saw Sasuke’s pitiful feverish face last night, the medic student decided to stay over. She urged him to go to the clinic but Sasuke declined saying that it was 12.30 am. Kiba was also not home going home for the whole of study week. He asked her to stay and then fell asleep. Sakura felt that his fever spiked up and had stayed the night to sponge him to get the fever down. Sakura then took of her jacket and decided that prudish Sasuke would not care so much about them sharing a bed.
Sasuke hauled himself but he was still wobbly so he leaned against the mattress. He thought about calling his elder brother but knew that Itachi was having meetings this morning with his management so decided to haul his own ass to the clinic. BONG BONG BONG! The sound of something being bashed echoed through the apartment.
“Don’t mind me, just getting in my locked room,” Sakura said from outside. Sasuke knew she must have taken the easy route by bashing her door knob off the door and try opening it herself. He grabbed his towel and headed for a quick shower. After getting dressed despite feeling like he was being whacked by a shovel, he exited the apartment and got down the elevator.
Luckily no one was inside the elevator. He did not want to answer and nod at anyone’s concern for now. He was satisfied that the universe somehow left him alone, but he quickly retracted his own thoughts. What if he was sick and alone someplace and was sicker than this. But he thought that he was lucky that he lived in an apartment with friends instead of with Itachi or worse alone. At least his body would soon be discovered and his body not left to rot alone for days. Sasuke cringed at his ‘worst case scenario’ thoughts, that’s what you get for just minding your own business instead of socializing with others. He could only tolerate Sakura and Neji as living companions because they were his childhood friends and their parents had supported him and Itachi all through their parents’ death and life. Friends who are like family meant a lot to him though he would never admit that to them vocally.
This morning he was of course shocked at first when he found Sakura looking almost naked lying beside him. But based on her descriptions yesterday, he had been out of character and so he might say a few things out of line at her last night. Sasuke hoped that he could talk with Sakura and apologize for it later. He did not want anything to be awkward later. He was worried that his lonely side must have asked pined for her companionship. Sasuke liked to be alone, though he sometimes wanted companions too but something tolerable. It was all on his own terms of course.
As Sasuke exited the main apartment’s lobby and walked to the main road, he found no taxi at all. On fine days Sasuke took the bus to the campus but today was one of his worst day and it was also drizzling. Sasuke had heard from his late mother that wet season was the season of fever and flu. Despite that he wished that whatever he caught would be over soon as finals was only in three weeks and he needed to prepare adequately.
Knowing that no cab would pass by, he reluctantly launched the App Store on his phone and downloaded the App most of his classmates had been raving about. Even Sakura swore by it, the Ride app which was a transport renting app. All the drivers were owners of public cars and the app was hassle free, claimed Sakura. He had never used it since he found taking the bus and the train convenient as is. But here his mind told him that it was high time he tried this reliable App.
Sasuke walked towards the nearby taxi stand and launched the Ride app. The app told him to pinpoint his exact location which he did and the next thing it asked was for his permission to start the Ride request. As soon as it was activated, the app started scanning for the nearest driver and it took about 30 seconds to detect a car.
“Toyota Prius, WUN 1010,” Sasuke read the details. Next to the car model and plate number was the face of the driver. He was a blonde man with spiky hair.
Sasuke watched as the red icon signifying the car on the map on his app showed the movement of the car. Sasuke frowned and felt his head getting heavier, he groaned and looked at the Ride App. The car would arrive in 3 minutes since there was virtually no traffic. People were either in school, office or at class. Sasuke waited and soon a car bearing the plate similar to his Ride app detail, appeared from the street corner and rode past him. It did not stop and instead turned the other corner and disappeared from view. Sasuke groaned.
“Dammit.” He hoped the driver would turn back after realizing his mistake. And then his handphone vibrated. Noticing that an unknown number was calling Sasuke took the call.
“Hello, Mr Uchiha? This is your Ride, where is this Suncity apartment? I did not see any sign.”
The car appeared from the other corner and passed by Sasuke and continued on its way to the other road. Sasuke was really angry by now, “It’s the building you passed twice. There’s a bus stop and I am the only person here. You can’t miss me!” He half shouted into the phone.
“Oh, that was you. Ok wait for me, I am making a U turn.”
The Ride driver ended the phone call and Sasuke got to his feet, but he swayed slightly when the blood rushed up. In his dizziness he paced a few steps aside to lean on an advertising panel erected beside the bus stop, and he waited for the yellow Toyota Prius to arrive. Sasuke began doubting the efficiency of this app, or was this driver a unique case amongst them?
The yellow car arrived and Sasuke got in, the driver glanced over his seat and apologized. “Sorry I am not really familiar with this area, and I just started plying this route. I usually ride along the west area where i live. So heading to the clinic?”
“Yes.”
“Ok sure!” The rider said in a too cheery voice.
Sasuke closed his eyes and forced himself to wake up and not fall asleep in some stranger’s car. It was only an eight minutes drive since there was no traffic on Tuesday.
“Hey Mr Uchiha, the clinic is here. Do you want to pay cash or online?” the Ride driver asked.
Sasuke grabbed for his wallet and checked his app. He handed a few extra yens to the driver and slipped a ‘thanks’ before shutting the door and got himself to the clinic. As soon as he arrived at the registration he was glad to see that only five people were in the waiting room. It was not going to be as long a wait as he imagined.
Sasuke waited for a cab after his clinic visit. Since he was only two days down with a fever the doctor gave him antibiotics. He had asked for a glass of water from the nurse at the clinic and had popped a few antibiotics for precaution. The metallic tasting medicine made him feel queasy and since final exams were just around the corner, Sasuke decided to play by the book eating his medicines as told.
He had waited for fifteen minutes when his hands found themselves launching the Ride app and Sasuke stared at his phone. He was tired of waiting and had no choice but to book for a ride home with the app, he was also very sluggish.
WUN 1010 made its appearance again and Sasuke groaned. But it was better than nothing and being an antisocial, independent man made him realize that he would rather ride a stranger’s car than his friend’s. It was not wrong to be like this Sasuke thought. His friends knew he could take of himself, he did not faint so far.
The yellow Prius arrived and the driver smiled as Sasuke embarked into the car. “Guess, our fate area sealed or that as Jiraiya said, this area really has a low Ride driver population. Now back to your home right?”
Sasuke only noticed that this time that the driver had a husky voice.
“Yes,” Sasuke said as he lay heavily onto the car’s seat and let the driver ramble on about his experience.
“I like being a Ride driver, actually I was an orphan and Jiraiya a sales car user who’s my Godfather took me in. I told him I wanted to be a sales person too so I can meet a lot of people… but no! He asked me to consider studying and said I could try doing this as a part time job. True to his words, I do get to meet a lot of people this way while doing something else.”
Sasuke just nodded idly until they arrived at his apartment. He gave the rider the fare and a few extra yens before the blond driver could say thank you.
“Thanks maa…”
Sasuke closed the door and rolled his eyes. A fifteen minutes ride with stories covering enough topic for a week Sasuke was glad he was leaving. He only walked a few steps away when he felt a sharp pain in his head, he staggered and with his visions blurring he fell down.
A car’s tyre screeched and footsteps rushed towards him. Sasuke sat with his legs splayed on the road side, one hand on his dark hair grabbing for the aching part and another hand clutching his bag.
“Here, I will take you upstairs. What’s your apartment number?” The driver said, he lifted Sasuke by the armpit but Sasuke was too heavy.
“Wait here, I will ask the security guard for help.”
Sasuke nodded at the driver and only noticed that he had an angelic face and not as masculine as he had imagines. He heaved a breath and thought that it was his mind playing tricks on himself. Soon he was standing supported by a security guard he knew worked at his apartment. The driver told the guard, “I have to move my car inside the proper parking, I’ll return to help you.”
The security guard helped Sasuke enter the apartment’s lobby. But since the guard was alone he told Sasuke, “i can’t leave my post unless it’s emergency so I’ll have to wait for your friend to come back ok.”
Sasuke massaged his temple, the throbbing pain had disappeared and he was feeling a little better than before. Thinking that he could make his own way upstairs he tried standing up and found that he was still wobbly but better.
“I can go upstairs myself, tell the person thank you for their concern,” Sasuke said.
“No sir, I saw you fell and I knew you would have to be escorted upstairs. It is my duty to be sure of that.”
Sasuke was about to think of another tactic to escape home when the blonde Ride driver appeared. As the blond stood before him, he realized that the driver was actually a head shorter than him.
“Thanks sir, I’ll be taking my leave now,” said the security guard to the driver. He looked busy with his walkie talkie and a steel stick and gave them a nod before walking away to his post.
“Ok. thank you sir,” the driver said before she awkwardly looked at Sasuke and asked,
“Err, so do you need me to hold you or how?”
Sasuke frowned and ignored the driver and headed to the door while swiping his access card. The shorter driver walked after him and stayed near him.
“I’ll escort to your door and make sure you get home ok,” he said.
Sasuke instead of acknowledging the driver just entered the elevator when it opened and walked inside. The driver followed quickly and punched the close door button. Sasuke leaned by the wall and faced away from the driver, he closed his eyes for a few seconds but was awakened by a voice.
“So what level should I push for you?”
Sasuke ignored her and looked at the button and pushed the number six button himself. He continued to ignore the driver as the elevator rushed to the sixth floor. When the elevator arrived at his floor the driver rushed forward and pushed the button from outside to make sure that the door stay opened for Sasuke.
“The door has sensors,” Sasuke said as he walked past him and towards his apartment. This time he walked briskly as if the faster he arrived at his home, the quicker he could avoid the driver.
They arrived at his door with the driver smiling anxiously, anticipation etched on his face. “My name Naruto Uzumaki, you can just call me Naruto, don’t need to address me as Miss Uzumaki. Well, that’s what my students call me. Emmm.”
Sasuke paused getting his keys out. And this time Sasuke finally realized that she was female. With the spiky yellow hair and bulky jacket, jeans and shoes the driver could be mistaken as a boy at first look. Sasuke continued to fumble for his keys. He had stashed his change, wallet and whatnots haphazardly inside his bag so everything was tangled. He looked at her and she grinned at the attention. Her blue eyes brightened as she realized that he was making something of her declaration.
“So, your name is….?”
Sasuke quickly looked inside his bag and saw the faint shape of his keys and fished it out. He unlocked his door and let himself in.
“Close the door,” Sasuke ordered.
He sat down on the sofa and groaned from the residual headache. He knew he had been studying extra hard these few days and neglecting his well being, so the illness was really an effect of all those things. The doctor had told him that if the fevers persists after three days he would have to got to the hospital for a blood test.
Sasuke heard the girl which he thought looked younger than him took off her shoes. He had carpets in his home and she was wearing dusty sneakers, so that must be the reason. He did not want to care about her now, she would be gone when she found out how unfriendly he could be later. He closed his eyes and did some deep breathing.
“Well, I latched the door but since you have security guards so I guess the door unlocked for a few minutes would be ok, I know Jiu Jitsu anyway. Well I can take my teacher down so I can protect you. Um, have a drink. Ah a fridge,” and Naruto’s voice disappeared from Sasuke’s earshot.
After a few minutes of blissful silence Sasuke heard something creeping against him and he opened his eyes. He almost slapped the face appearing before his eyes in defence, but the face’s reflex was much faster. The damn blue eyes moved away from him startled.
“Hey, it’s just me girl from the block. Here’s your water. You taken your meds?”
“Hmmm.” Sasuke knew he was being difficult but he wanted the girl to realize that she was unwelcomed here.
“You know what, I could tell that you are just being like this because you are one of those people who hated being molly coddled right. But I am going to come here everyday and make sure you are alright. I got your phone number so as your Ride driver I swear to keep track of your health until you get back on your feet. Ok, that’s overdoing it. But call me if anything?”
“Sasuke,” he said. She smiled at him. It was just a name but an acknowledgement that he thought of her as more than a stranger.
Naruto looked around Sasuke’s apartment and nodded, “your home is nice. Well my time’s up. So take care. Call me if anything ok. You are scowling determinedly and that tells me that you will be ok by yourself. I will deliver some food later or the delivery guy might since i have to come home for Jiu Jitsu class. Ok bye see you later Mr Uchiha.” Naruto jumped to her feet and gave Sasuke a salute. She exited the house and silence entered Sasuke’s domain. Sasuke groaned and lay across the sofa only to fall asleep from exhaustion. The next thing he he heard was Sakura waking him up.
“Sasuke, you went to the clinic. Lee told me to come back and take care of you tonight and I had enough of binge studying anyway. I am so sorry leaving you like that behind. So you ordered delivery? I took the food for you about an hour ago,” Sakura said.
“Who delivered it?” Sasuke asked, his voice croaking. He eyed Sakura and her pink brows.
The pink thin eyebrows arched as she answered him, “a blonde kid in jacket and jeans. I was wondering what kind of delivery guy wear so casual clothing. I forgot to buy something for you. But here’s some fresh juice from Tenten. Kiba was surprised you did not call him, so how did you get there? I assumed you were going to call Kiba.”
Sasuke dragged his eyes away from the pink brows and grabbed for the juice bottle and drank away. He wiped his mouth and said, “I tried your app.” He was feeling really hungry having only eaten a few bites of bread since last night and proceeded to eat the food. Naruto had sent him sandwich and soup, something light for his fainting self.
“So Ride it is, how’s the driver? Told you it’s good. There’s hardly a taxi near this area.”
“The bus is convenient enough,” Sasuke argued.
“Yes if you are fit and healthy,” Sakura said with a smile. She knew arguing with Sasuke would just lead to failure as the man was very adamant doing things his own way.
“It’s already 3.00 pm…”
“What?” Sasuke was alarmed that he had slept that long. He was indeed really sick and tired.
“I think your days of studies finally caught up on you, well rest now. You can’t be sick for finals ok.”
Sasuke sighed and ate the food Naruto had bought him. Since Sakura did not ask anything about the food, he declined to explain more. Sakura did not need to know about Naruto and Sasuke doubt that she would appear again soon.
"I am sorry if I shocked you this morning, but I wore jeans to sleep just so you would not be surprised. Well, I am not like the old me. I don’t pine for you,” Sakura started. Sasuke was clueless until he noticed that she was actually referring to their ‘being on the same bed’ situation this morning. “No I should apologize Sakura for assuming other things. I should realize how we are now.”
“I know. I think about it sometimes and I cringed at myself but then I understand your perspective and I blame it all on your sickness and fatigue. Don’t kill yourself overdoing the study.”
“No don’t wish that on me, you will always be my best friend Sakura. This morning was my fault I should trust you more .”
“Yeah, I know.”
The unmentioned thing was that Sasuke was afraid to lose his friendship with Sakura. They tried dating but eventually decided that they were better off as friends.
“Good morning!” Naruto half shouted at Sasuke’s face the next morning. He was again alone and she appeared just as she had promised. He quickly placed a hand on his forehead and was relieved that his fever was subsiding gradually but surely. Sasuke thought flashed across his mind fever gone and so Naruto would disappear soon too.
“I don’t know whether you like narutomaki or menma, so I bought both topping. I also asked the owner of this really tasty stall ramen to separate the ramen with the soup so you can make it dry or soupy. Now, invite me in!” Naruto demanded.
Sasuke sighed and moved aside to let her in. It had been months since Sasuke had ramen and being hungry and sick made him tolerant of her. She had not asked him for money yet and he counted that she must have spent at least fifteen dollars for all the food.
“I waited for an hour driving around but no one ordered a Ride so I thought I will wait for the afternoon rush. I don’t have class today or tomorrow so I can come around again.”
Sasuke just nodded and opened his box of ramen and poured it into a bowl which Naruto had fetched from his kitchen.
“You are also a student right? What major?” Naruto asked. She was wearing a green army jacket which she had unbuttoned to reveal a grey shirt inside. Her jeans looked similar to yesterday and again she had entered his apartment only with socks. Sasuke finished chewing on his food before answering, “Journalism.”
“That’s a fancy degree, well I am taking a photography short course at Konoha Uni.” Sasuke paused at her answer but quickly returned to eating as usual.
Naruto caught on that and asked, “Hey, don’t say that you attend Konoha U too? I thought you are at Suna? I saw the scarfs at the kitchen?” Naruto scratched her head with her chopsticks. Sasuke cringed at her scratching.
“Well, it’s not like I’ll be stalking you. You are such a bastard I am just here because I am worried about you.”
“Are you always like this?” Sasuke’s temper suddenly spiked up at Naruto’s words. “Well. my late parents always told me to do good. I want to help people.”
Sasuke bit his tongue before he could utter these words. So you think of me as a charity case to practice on.
Naruto despite all her nosy attitude sounded sincere. Sasuke forced himself to set himself as a future journalist, and chided himself. He should never irk people if he wants to be a successful journo later. He held his tongue and listened to Naruto.
“Actually I never had the chance to listen to my late parents say those words, they were dead the day i was born. But so many people who knew them told me the same things over the years and I believed that was what they would have told me to do if they were alive. These people worked with my parents, they were not just random people from my past. So when you were being difficult the other day, you kind of made me want to … um be here.”
Sasuke stopped eating and looked at his food. He did not want to hear anymore personal stories from her, he did not want to have to share her burden. But the depth of his heart softened and so he nodded and listened.
“Well it’s not like I am going to make this ambience any sadder, well I take wedding pictures. If you want to take outdoor photos with your friends, maybe girlfriend, you can call me. Here’s my card. She was pretty,” Naruto slipped a card onto the table and pushed it to Sasuke.
Sasuke appreciated the thought about Sakura. So she had sent the food herself yesterday and met Sakura. They continued eating with Naruto the one doing the talking. She told stories from her experiences as a wedding photographer and Sasuke adding a word or two “yes,” and “no.”
“Well I think I will be a little late tomorrow. I might need to widen my Ride area. So I’ll meet you tomorrow?” Naruto asked.
She looked at Sasuke who accompanied her silently at the door and lifted herself by her toe and placed her palm on his forehead.
“You don’t feel as warm as you do when I came here. Well….” Naruto took away her hand and suddenly felt awkward about the situation. “See you tomorrow?”
“Okay,” Sasuke said. Naruto waited for a few seconds looking at Sasuke with her big blue eyes before she turned away and walked to the elevator. Sasuke did not walk beside her, letting her wait for the elevator alone and he went back inside and locked the door.
The third day Naruto did not come but she appeared the next day with a more subdued attitude. Sasuke almost asked about the day she did not come, but instead asked, “You working today?”
“Yes, my lecturer postponed my class for a week so I am on break but my class will finish a week later. Here’s your food. I already ate on my way here.”
Sasuke looked at Naruto perplexed but he sat down and started eating. She talked about the traffic today and told him about taking a small hiring job from a mother of her Godparent, so she would spend her mourning ferrying a few seven year olds to their school starting tomorrow.
“There’s a little cute girl with blonde pigtails, and I wondered if I ever looked cute when I was small. I am not sure because I never saw a picture of my toddler self, the ones I saw were mostly from school yearbooks from primary school. Hey how does the beef taste? This is premium meat so I am very sure you will love it.”
“Yes , it’s tasty,” Sasuke assured her. After a few days he had less reason to be cold to her. His fever was almost gone but he was feeling very lethargic. The doctor said if he did not suffer any other symptom he did not need to return for a follow up. He did not feel queasy, the headache was gone, no cough, flu or whatever and he was eating fine.
“Of course it tastes good, I personally taste them myself. Actually I worked at the place before this so that’s how I know. She said smiling cheekily.”
Sasuke locked eyes with Naruto and they seemed to cause something in himself. He wondered why he let her in the first place, Sasuke was a bastard but he was a rehabilitating bastard. Ever since he furthered his studies in Journalism his views on the world gradually changed. He thought how Naruto born as an orphan could be this nice when he with all things coming easily his way, never having to work a day in his life was being difficult. She did not even walk away when he was acting his bastard self.
The raven haired man next realized that Naruto was already standing by his side feeling his forehead with her palm. “Wow you are almost of normal temperature, so I guess this is it. Your girlfriend will be home afternoon right?”
Sasuke came to his senses and blinked hard. “Ummm.”
He automatically followed her to the door and saw her out. She waved goodbye to him and he closed the door back as usual. Sasuke walked back to his sofa and sat. He thought long and hard.
True to her word she did not appear the next day and then the next. Sasuke tried summoning her using the Ride app but she was not even in the vicinity and instead another driver appeared. Sasuke remembered the business card she had given him which he had carelessly placed somewhere. He did google for her name but no Naruto Uzumaki came up. There were a few Naruto but they were all males.
Five days later Sakura gave her a card saying that she had taken it and forgot to return it. She thought about giving it to neji who wanted a freelance photographer but something told her that the name card was connected to Sasuke and decided to approach him about him. She had wanted to ask him whether this Naruto Uzumaki was a good photographer but Sasuke had snatched the card, grabbed his coat and was out the door.
Sasuke disembarked from the Ride car he took to the office where Naruto took photography assignments. It was a shophouse situated half an hour from his apartment, it was the other side of town and not really his usual haunt. But he had been here plenty of time to interview people because this side of town had a public park which the journalist students like to shoot for their assignments.
He entered the door as stated on her card and walked in. There was a blonde woman at the entrance.
“I am sorry, she is not available at the moment until her camera is repaired. Are you a customer?”
Sasuke decided to lie, maybe he will get to meet her quicker that way. “Yes, I am.”
“What is it about?”
“I need a copy of the photos because mine was gone.”
“Oh then, I will leave a message for her. Your name sir?”
Sasuke saved himself the problem of giving false information by pretending that someone was claiming hi,m. “Sorry my phone, I have to take this call.” He feigned taking a call and ran outside and away from the company. He will have to try harder.
His fever was gone but Sasuke was too distracted to continue with his studies for finals. He had tried searching for Jiraiya but could not come up with the actual spelling because he had only heard it once, He wondered if him and Naruto would cross paths again. Sasuke sank onto the floor and cursed. “How do I meet her again?” Sasuke was waking up from his nap when Sakura knocked on his door and entered his room without pause.
“Hey babe, food delivery again? The same delivery person, I think this he might be a she actually?”
“What does she look like Sakura?” Sasuke launched himself towards her and grabbed for her shoulders.
“Ah, she wore a blue dress with the same blonde hair but this time looked like it’s combed, she looked more put together than last time,” Sakura said.
Sasuke flew out of his apartment, and aimed for the elevator. He pushed the door button anxiously. It opened to reveal a woman and her baby in it and he joined them. Sasuke couldn’t help feeling fired up by his own suddenness. The woman and baby recognised him as their neighbour and they just smiled at him. When the door opened he leapt out the door but found out that he had gotten at the first floor and he so he ran to the stairs and bounded down. He scrambled for the entrance and the car park. He caught Naruto just as she was starting her car.
“Hey, Naruto!” Sasuke landed on her car’s door panting. He had not been so active lately.
“Hey, Sasuke?” she said amused and confused. She pushed her door open and Sasuke moved aside.
She had her hair pinned back unlike her usual ruly spikes. She wore a sleeveless blue dress which made her look older and Sasuke wondered if they were of the same age. She did not wear makeup except for some lip gloss.
Naruto let Sasuke caught his breath and tried to catch his eyes. Sasuke looked into the blue orbs he missed so much and laughed in relief. Naruto laughed too and they both spent a good minute laughing before Sasuke held onto Naruto’s shoulders and said.
“I would love to meet you again.” Sasuke said and smiled.
“I’ll come by your house and wait for you outside,” he said.
“You would do that?” she asked.
“I never met anyone like you, and I want to know more.”
“Is this really you?” Naruto asked. How did you turn up this nice?
“Only when I am with you,” he said.
“Well, how about your girlfriend? Or was it just my assumption”
“I never confirmed anything,” Sasuke admitted.
“Why… I made a wrong and you made me believe that, how could you… ” Naruto sounded confused.
Sasuke grabbed for Naruto’s hand, “Let’s start all over again, take out your phone please.”
“Why?
“Just give me your phone, but unlock it first.”
Naruto gave him her phone and Sasuke launched her Ride Driver App and then launched his own Ride App on his phone. He gave Naruto’s phone to her and said. “Answer my Ride call.”
Naruto answered and laughed, “So?”
“Bring me to a restaurant and we can get to know each other better,” Sasuke said. His eyes held a thousand meaning in them.
“Get in the car,” Naruto said. She let out a blinding smile which Sasuke captured and kept in his mind.
Sasuke grabbed Naruto and hugged her with glee. He was ready to be on many rides with her. And they began their ride for happily ever after.

WOW #6
Viva Las Vegas! Everyone has heard of Las Vegas, and everyone has their own vision of what Vegas is: Elvis impersonators, The Hangover-esque nights out, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” and of course casinos galore. In their ad titled “Unstatus Quo,” Palms Resort Casino challenges these stereotypes by showcasing “not your grandma’s Vegas.” From a strategist perspective, Palms Resort Casino recently invested in millions of dollars of renovation, and along with a new property they want to put out a new brand. A main insight the strategist must have taken to make this ad campaign is that people already have a set vision of what Vegas is. They took this typical message of what Vegas stereotypically is viewed as - dazzling yet sometimes seems designed  - and completely flipped it around to appeal to a younger crowd. They wanted to put a fresh spin on what Las Vegas is, and how their new resort and casino showcases this “New Vegas.”
The ad addresses a younger generation of casino-goers, rather than a typical elder gambling crowd that the “Old Vegas” could often times appeal to. They feature an elaborately lush montage featuring celebrities that are well-known by younger crowds such as Cardi B, Emily Ratajkowski, Ezra Miller, Adriana Lima, Marshmello, and Rita Ora. They are all featured in fun and eye-catching settings, also dripping with gold and money. The ad also has a feature where if consumers keep scouring the ad over the coming weeks, they will have a chance to win some of the elaborate items featured in the ad. Every day until April 5, Palms will use YouTube Cards in a “first-ever activation” that will at specific times “unlock” certain “drops”—Easter egg prizes like a Gucci x Dapper Dan jacket, a REVOK painting, a signed Cardi B microphone, a Marshmello helmet, an Olivia Steele sculpture, and Nike sneakers designed by Joshua Vides. This allows the younger crowd that they are appealing to interact with the ads. And as a very interactive generation, this works in the favor of Palms Resort Casino in gaining interest with millenials and Gen Z.
I believe this ad is relevant. although it may not be true. While the “word hard play hard” mindset appeals to their target market, realistically by going to Palms Resort Casino, consumers will not suddenly be dripping with money and gold and hanging out with Cardi B and Adriana Lima. Because of this, the ad could be seen as untrustworthy and just propaganda to make Palms look cooler than it actually is. It is over the top, and Gen Z has trouble trusting ads. While it grabs the attention of the viewer with the flashy features, is that enough? The ad resonates and it is differentiated. Overall, despite its false promises the ad is displaying a message that casinos and resorts don’t usually play around with. The “New Vegas” idea is fresh and exciting, and it sets the stage for the new Palms Resort Casino quite strongly.
Although the campaign has many strengths, it also contains some weaknesses. As mentioned before, the ad could be seen as dishonest and flashy. In order to improve these ads, Palms Resort Casino should include more truth to their messaging. If they included some facts, features, and statistics as well as more information about their renovations scattered more in the ad, then it could sway more of the Gen Z/Millenial market to trust the validity of the ad.
