Reading update:
I got this one in my first Rainbow Crate box, so this is under the category of ‘books I probably wouldn’t have picked up on my own.’ I ended up really enjoying it. The prose was really lyrical, and just in general it was extremely well written. I will say that I found the motivations of one of the mains sort of hard to get my head around...he freaks out and runs away multiple times in the book and it was never really clear why to me, beyond a general ‘this kid is messed up.’ But in general, a very good read with a transmasc lead, marching band, and lots of food descriptions.
So. Do you ever love a book so much. And then there’s a sequel, and you’re so excited. And you’re reading the sequel and it’s like. Everything you loved about the first one, and you’re so happy you got to spend more time with these dumb idiots. And then you get to the end and the end is so bad that it sours the whole thing, and you’re just like. Who let you write this. Why didn’t your editor stop you. Why didn’t they do a better job.
Anyway that was my experience with Husband Material. I absolutely adored Boyfriend Material, truly one of my favorite romcoms that I’ve ever read. And this one was GREAT...up until about the last 50 pages. The ending felt totally unearned, and was honestly kind of a downer, and didn’t make all that much sense to me within the narrative. It felt like Hall wanted to subvert the traditional HEA but didn’t actually set up that subversion properly, and at no point was anyone like ‘hey you need to set this up better, because it kind of comes out of nowhere and feels like a sad bait and switch.’
Anyway I’m kind of depressed and mad about it this morning.
Currently reading:
Only about 50 pages into this one, but I’m enjoying it a lot so far! The main character has synesthesia, and I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a book where that’s the case. Makes for some very pretty writing.

I decided to text her again… My heart skipped a beat when she responded.I realized that she didn’t want to be with me anymore…

Me and Alexis met at Maria’s bakery. The bakery we would always hang out before we started dating. We talked about the whole break up situation, boundaries, all that stuff. I wanted him to apologize correctly. I still wanted to be with him. A part of me wanted to be with him but the other wants me to leave him… Me and Alex stayed as friends... He was walking me back to my parents house. I missed this. I missed him. I missed his scent. I missed his smile. I missed his laugh. His eyes. everything about him. He stops. “what happened” i say?. He leans in for a kiss. I missed this part as well. I give in. I kissed back. One kiss went into another then another. We both pulled away gasping for air.
“i missed you y/n”- he says. “i missed you as well”- i say. “i love you a lot y/n”- he says while looking at my eyes while pushing my hair behind my ear. “i love you a lot Alex, i missed you a lot, and i mean a lot mi amor”- i say. Our foreheads started touching each others. I couldn’t be mad at him anymore. I just couldn’t. I lean in again. His hand started to go around my waist pulling me closer while my arms wrapped around his neck.
