OH, CAPTAIN!, a harry potter fic.

─── summary: Megan Wynne Jones wants to be the best. The eldest daughter in a family of muggles, she has always had a strong will. The big sister, the reliable one, she has always been there. Always. Above all, though, she wants to be the best at Quidditch. Megan makes the team in her second year, in the midst of turmoil brewing at home. She might be the youngest on her team, but she’s fast on a broom and quick-thinking. She knows all the plays, she knows how to score. She’s good. One day, she might even be the best. but there’s one person standing in her way: CEDRIC FUCKING DIGGORY. He’s a year older than her, and just a tiny bit better. Their rivalry makes the team better, they push each other to be the best, and as much as she hates him, she admires him, too. When he’s made captain, she admits he deserves it. She’ll get there one day, even if she has to kill him for it. It was a joke, though. She was supposed to earn the captaincy. She was supposed to become better than Cedric, and prove herself as the best. IT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN LIKE THIS.

She wasn’t a girl made to live in the shadows. Before her death, Megan had been the light at the center of the universe, the gravity holding human beings to this planet. She’d been a blazing supernova. And she’d been in love.

hey @geohenley cait i love you

1, who's your favourite character to write?

this changes on an hourly basis bc my brain is full of bees and existing is difficult, but if i think on it probably megan and cassia. megan because writing for her gave me the freedom to write in a style that was most natural to me. her book began as an experiment in that and it was so fun! megan is hard to write now because that style feels so disconnected from who i am now as a person, and in a narrative sense i’m trying to so hard to make the writing flow like it did in the earlier chapters that i’m psyching myself out. but she is still my favourite. cassia, on the other hand, lets me tap into a darker, more prose-driven style of writing that i love too. megan is fun, but cassia lets me paint pictures with my words and when i get it right, it feels so vibrant and beautiful to me. i love her for that.

7, do you plan everything out before you write or do you sit down and go with the flow?

THIS IS SO FUNNY TO ME BC I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS THE OTHER DAY. so i used to plan everything down to the line. honestly. i have documents upon documents planned for my fics, and i used to find it easier to write if i knew what was coming next. and reading over my plans would get me excited again if ever i lost interest in writing. these days i find it out hard to put plans out rather than go with the flow - i struggle so much with focusing these days that going with the flow is sometimes the only way i’ll get something written. personal preference, though, is definitely planning over pantsing.

13, is there one character that always fights you when you try writing them?

yes! emma morley from my spencer reid fic. she is a perfectionist and i have deleted almost everything i’ve ever written for her more than once because none of it is good enough, and i know that’s all in my head and so is she but it’s a lost cause at this point.

14, what is your go-to ‘self-indulgent’ genre of writing (such as comfort, angst, enemies to friends, etc.)?

i’m a sucker for tooth-aching fluff. the sweeter the better. i also love angst and while i love to read happy endings, if i’m writing angst i don’t love writing them, which is funny because if i’m reading and there’s no happy ending i lose my fucking mind

15, what two characters did you never expect to work together?

marya and poe from my star wars fic. they’re not in a relationship and they were never planned to be anything even remotely shippy. they were supposed to be friends, and not even good friends, and really i did not expect them to just click the way they did while i was writing?? he was supposed to be flippant with her. poe has strong morals, and marya’s actions violate pretty much all of them, and he wasn’t supposed to like her very much for that - understand her actions, maybe, but not validate her for them. but they’ve got such romantic vibes to them and i?? can’t cope?? they are not ever romantically involved, but they’ve got such strong and painful in another life we could have feelings that they both just silently acknowledge. there’s an affection between them that i never expected. and i think they interact directly only twice in the whole fic. it’s mad.

(halloween) give me a ship and I'll tell you who:

chooses the pumpkin: megan megan megan she takes this very seriously

carves the pumpkin: they both get pumpkins and they get competitive about whose carving is the best ( megan goes scary, cedric goes funny, they cover each other in pumpkin guts and kiss a lot )

Gets scared and clings the other in a haunted house: right so. i don’t wanna say megan. but megan. ( she DOESN’T LIKE GORE the jump-scare stuff??? nOT HER VIBE )

Matching costume idea: I’VE THOUGHT SO MUCH ABOUT THIS okay so they go as han solo and chewbacca. EXCEPT. cedric chewbacca bc he’s so much taller than megan. also megan pulls off that harrison ford suave better than cedric could.

Makes a cozy bed-fort to cuddle in: okay so megan gets home from training and is super tired and sore and cedric has made the bed-fort and there are candles and pizza and he massages her sore shoulders and their dog jumps all over them

Steal’s the other’s candy: cedric steals megan’s candy. megan dips brussels sprouts in chocolate as revenge.

Accidentally gets lost in a corn maze: megan WOULD bc she’s impulsive and wouldn’t keep track and is also short so definitely can’t see over the hedgerows.

Tells spooky stories to scare the other: they both hate spooky stories their lives have been scary enough.

Collects cool-looking leaves: megan collects them and keeps them in a jar. she writes wishes on them w her little sister when she visits and they send them back out into the world. it’s a little tradition they’ve started.

anything you haven’t shared about oh, captain?

if i haven't shared anything about oh, captain, it's because they're spoilers and i don't wanna ruin it (except i do, i so do)

so here are a couple tidbits;

millie is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns and idk why i didn’t realise that before starting to write the fic but they are and i’m going to go back and edit their chapters soon

millie and cece get married after the war but then divorce bc NOT EVERYONE WHO FALLS IN LOVE AS TEENS STAYS TOGETHER FOREVER and that’s healthy but they do have a son together and he is cute as shit

megan and cedric have fertility issues later in life which will be discussed in the super long epilogue chapter i’m still planning

i still haven’t decided whether to k/ll polly yet in the battle

everyone wanted gwennie to be a witch,,,, and guess what, she is (megan threatens the shit out of her father and gwennie definitely grows up with a different, more positive relationship w magic & her faith as a result)

megan proposes to cedric after her team wins the 2006 quidditch world cup <3

AHHH OKAY OKAY i'm gonna go by act bc there isn't one song that wholly encompasses them and their relationship bc it changes BUT the ones that come closest are !!!

okay the song that relates to them most throughout their whole relationship is fair by the amazing devil. okay this song IS them and i cannot explain it.

act 1 meg/cedric is summed up by the song star girl by mcfly

act 2 is king by blue october okay every time i hear that song it is just a montage of megric moments in my head i literally can’t handle it

act 3 has two songs that most sum them up; death of me by daughtry and famous final scene by bob seger.

act 4 is come back when you can by barcelona bc this whole act is megan and cedric coming to terms with their differences after his near-death experience and separating and it hurts but it’s healthy ugh

The most important people in Megan Wynne Jones’ life. The ones that have shaped her soul, raised her from the frightened child she was into the fearsome woman she is. There are other important relationships in Megan’s life ━ her little brother and sister, for example, are her motivations for nearly everything. She wants to make them proud. Her relationship with religion, too, has shaped her as a person.
