It is, objectively, super funny that the Trek fandom in general is sitting around hoping that STP ignores their faves and doesn’t try and involve them. I mean, it’s many other things as well, but it’s funny that I keep being recommended random posts of random people crossing their fingers hoping that their blorbos will be ignored, never be seen on screen, and therefore saved from anything from bad characterisation to death via stupid contrived avoidable circumstance.

Recently discovered your account. So cool that you're sharing your experience with us! I discovered Star Trek during the pandemic and have since become utterly obsessed. DS9 was the best by far!
I would love to hear more about the writers! Were you all fans of trek when you were hired, or were some unfamiliar with it? Do you all keep in touch and share opinions about the writing on other trek shows? Is some of the magic lost from having seen behind the scenes, or does it enhance it?
Thanks!!
All of us were definitely familiar with STAR TREK (both TOS and TNG) when we joined DS9. In fact, most of us had worked on TNG at some point, even if it was just as a freelancer (like me). I think our degree of fandom varied. I would have characterized myself as a big fan of TOS and a casual fan of TNG when I was invited in to pitch to TNG, mostly because I fell off the bandwagon after the rough first season. But I watched episodes every night in syndication to prep for my pitches, and I definitely became a fan once I saw how much the show had improved after I gave up on it.
I'd say Ron and Rene were probably the biggest fans. They got into TV because they wanted to write STAR TREK, more or less. I'd say Pete Fields was probably the least invested in the franchise, in that by the time he came on, he'd been writing TV since MAN FROM UNCLE, so to him, it was just another show (one he liked a lot) and another gig. The rest of us were somewhere in between.
We all talk from time to time. I picketed with Ira a few weeks ago. I saw Brad and David on the picket lines over the past few weeks as well. We're not all super-close but it's always great to see each other. Sometimes we talk about current shows, but honestly, we usually talk about each other's families and how our lives are going.
As for the magic, it can be a little hard to watch STAR TREK now as a casual fan and not second guess things or wonder how I might've done a particular scene or episode, but I'm usually able to get past that to enjoy the latest LOWER DECKS or SNW. I still love STAR TREK in all its forms and I'll always been proud of the work Ira and the rest of us did DS9. I'm deeply blessed and grateful to call Ira, Ron, Rene, Hans, Brad, David and Jim my brothers. And I miss Michael, Pete, and Evan a lot.

Hey Mr. Garaks-Padded-Bra,
I want to start watching DS9 but I haven’t watched The Next Generation, only TOS. To understand DS9 do I have to watch TNG?
Thank you :)
I think a lot of the appeal to ds9 is how different it is to tng, so while you dont have to watch the entire series, it may benefit you to watch some of the key episodes so you dont miss out on some of the preestablished timeline stuff, as tng closely predates ds9 and actually has a timeline overlap!! Youll need to understand the borg to fully enjoy ds9s pilot, but thankfully thats the last time theyre ever included in ds9. The borg suck. Sorry. Anyways. Watch tng s3e26 before ds9s pilot id say, and maybe a handful of classics u find online :)) it’s obviously best to watch tng first, but in my opinion, completely unnecessary if youre watching casually. Ds9 is an easy watch and if youre missing any lore you can always give it a google teehee. Oh and maybe a Q episode. Because Q shows up in ds9 and i dont want you to get scared

Random thoughts on my TNG rewatch:
So neat to see the costumes in more detail than on the crappy tvs of my childhood — so many pleats and textures! My favourite are Picard’s casual clothes (like his outfit in “Starship Mine” and Riker’s shiny blue shirt.
Love the dynamic between Crusher and Picard in the middle/late seasons. She enjoys teasing him so much. It’s great.
Poor Data has to deal with Riker putting his leg up on his work area right at eye level. I laugh every time.
I finally realised that the theme music for the first season (or two ?) of Picard is based on one of the flute pieces from “Inner Light”
Trying to imagine what it would be like to work on the Enterprise and having to go to all those classical music concerts and poetry recitals— not to mention getting roped into one of Dr. Crusher’s dramatic productions. Like you can’t really escape your coworkers and have to take part in their weird hobbies because you’re all on the ship together.

watching tos for the first time since like, roughly 2012/13-ish? i don't remember what year it was, or why i only got thru most of season 1 before stopping
it's been fun to refresh my swiss cheesed memory with this tho so here's a semi-liveblog of the first 10 eps that i watched over the past couple weeks
1x01 - the man trap
things i remembered beforehand:
salt monster
"plum" uwu
that gay little run and crawl jim does when he's taking cover (it fills me with such delight)
things i did not remember:
how many people died, good god man it's only the first episode
1x02 - charlie x
things i remembered:
jim's bright red exercise pants
that stupid fucking face charlie makes when he uses his powers
not liking this ep at all when i first watched it, possibly due to me being around the same age as charlie at the time
additional thoughts: i enjoyed it more this time and felt more sympathetic for charlie. poor kid needed some parents, and also, like, a hug
1x03 - where no man has gone before
things i remembered:
bones isn't in it :'( (bored) (sad) (missing my bestie)
"James R Kirk"
that post i saw on here recently about how their contacts were made of glass
the only thing i could think about while watching:
their contacts
were made
of GLASS
(yes i understand this was how contacts were made back then. still freaked out by the concept of people putting glass in their eyes on purpose)
1x04 - the naked time
things i remembered:
sweat disease
sulu fencing
oh kathleen
"ONE-MORE-TIME!!"
"love mankind"
spock breakdown (extremely uncomfortable to watch)
bones casually ripping jim's shirt sleeve to jab him in the arm (extremely hilarious every time i think about it)
did not remember:
anything about them almost crashing into a planet lol
jim's little monologue when he gets infected (lmao)
time warp???
additional thoughts: hey remember when they reused this plot in tng and tasha and data fucked (<- literally the only thing i can remember about it) ((edit from future fex: i rewatched that ep. it was wild. tos did it better tho))
1x05 - the enemy within
things i remembered:
unicorn dog :)
evil kirk and poor little meow meow kirk
"I'M CAPTAIN KIRK!!!"
things not remembered:
dog dies :(
evil kirk's killer eyeliner
additional thoughts: say what you will about shatner / his acting but this ep is Peak shatner performance and a lot of fun to watch. he put his whole pussy into it, as the kids say these days
1x06 - mudd's women
things remembered:
could not forget harry mudd if i tried
the women are color coded like the powerpuff girls lol
they're also like, on some kind of drug that keeps them looking young or something
cool costumes tho
i don't have much to say about this one lol, harry's a fun character but the rest of the ep wasn't super interesting to me. did finally learn how to pronounce "ophiuchus" tho so i'll thank it for that
1x07 - what are little girls made of
things remembered:
is this the penis rock episode (it is)
uhhh i think kirk gets put into some kind of spinny machine that makes androids (he does)
more cool costumes (debatable)
things i find funny:
the number of planets we've encountered so far that are populated by like. 2-4 people
the way ruk (the big guy) just picks up and throws kirk like he weighs nothing
so much buildup with kirk and the penis rock and he doesn't even get to hit ruk over the head with it smh
also not a funny moment but i liked the way kirk was able to get a message to spock thru the android kirk, v clever
wait i just realized bones wasn't in this ep either. deducting 1/4 of a star from my mental rating bc i missed him (but apparently not that much)
1x08 - miri
remembered:
planet of children (bc everyone else died of terminal puberty)
"no blah blah blah!"
bones tests his newly discovered, untested cure on himself, in true mad scientist fashion (also spones moment <3)
saw this ep on a "what's your fave 'bad' episode" poll here recently and i can't remember if i thought it was good or bad when i first watched it lol
forgot:
another earth?? there's just a second, identical earth floating around out there?? and (of course) they don't mention it at all for the rest of the episode
300 year old children
oh these kids are so much more annoying than i remembered, however i may just be biased bc i don't like kids shfkshfk
1x09 - dagger of the mind
remember:
absolutely nothing! oh boy!
thoughts:
wow this ep is fucked up!
okay actually i don't think i've seen this one at all before?
usually there'll be moments that jog my memory but the only thing even slightly familiar to me was kirk going "helen don't go!" while in the neutralizer chair, but i could've just seen a clip/gif of it before
i remember skipping episodes in season 1 (i was impatient and wanted to get to city on the edge of forever) but i thought i'd at least made it to halfway thru the season before skipping any
anyway did i mention this ep is fucked up? (star trek really does love to drop an absolutely haunting 50 minutes of television on you and then never address it again, i understand this now. roll credits!)
1x10 - the corbomite maneuver
remember:
uhh
there's a thing out there
it's in the way
preventing them from boldly going, even
looks like an old windows screensaver
i might've skipped this ep too now that i think about it
thoughts:
cute mckirk moment in sickbay :3
i love that this cube has its own theme music whenever its on screen
oh shit it's the sequel to cube: orb
jesus christ that's a big orb
man they really said "okay we've got 3 music tracks and we're gonna get our money's worth out of them"
i gotta say this ep slaps tbh—WAIT HE'S A BABY???
LITTLE BABY MAN
LMAOOOOO
honestly great episode tho i'll stand by that

Maybe I’m just missing an obvious detail because I’m not from America but I thought Picard season 3 was the only good one? The first 2 seasons felt like bland slop that you could watch hundreds of hours of from any American network but the third at least felt like they were using Picard as a captain rather than a mouthpiece for the writers. I remember watching the original series when I was younger and the show under Alex Kurtzman felt like it had such a distain for the original I found it almost petty
(1) I am not American.
(2) I've already expressed my opinion in a great deal of detail in a great many places, but basically it boils down to this: When I think about TNG and what I liked from it, I don't just think about the characters. I think about the moral dilemmas; about the social commentary; about the thought-provoking science fiction concepts; about the contemplation of the human condition. The first two seasons, for all of their flaws--and I agree, they had flaws in absolute spades--offered all of these things. The third season, by and large, did not. It was an action movie, complete with quips, morally weightless violence, and a plot that was resolved simply by killing the bad guys. And you know what, I did enjoy seeing the old crew again; I grew up with TNG, I was literally obsessed with it for my entire childhood. I had comic books and action figures of the entire crew. But it all just felt so hollow.
And you say that the first two seasons felt disdainful. I entirely disagree. But I absolutely think that the third season was completely disdainful of the first and second. 80% of the original cast was pushed out and never even mentioned, not even when they were plot relevant. Data comes back to life and no one tells him that he has a daughter; that there's now an entire planet of Soong-type androids and he's no longer alone in the universe. The Borg come back and no one even mentions Jurati, who spent the entire second season becoming a Borg Queen. Raffi learns to swordfight from Worf and never feels the need to mention that her adopted son is a Romulan swordmaster. Rios's ship, La Sirena, is just casually dumped somewhere after the fifth episode, presumably alongside his chorus of holograms; the script can't be arsed to tell us what became of it. Laris tells Picard in the second scene of the first episode of the season that she will be waiting for him at some café. She's never seen or even mentioned again. Disdainful? The third season is positively contemptuous of the first two, of their characters, and of all of us fans who liked them.
Anyways, that's why I don't like it. Hope that helps.

KATE! Congratulations to you on your milestone. You bring joy and fun to this little corner of the void, and I'm really glad you share it with us.
I would love if you could make a 📜fic rec, please and thank you. I'll leave it up to you if you want to choose one show or the other (or both). It's your celebration, you do you! My only request is no dark!fic.
I'm curious to see what Star Trek fics/ships you enjoy. TNG is my forever love but if you're also a fan of Discovery or Strange New Worlds, I'm down.
And I was a fan of Stargate Atlantis back in the day. I didn't have a tumblr account then, but I did come across some stories and fanvids that I enjoyed. Which is your favorite ship?
And since you love flowers so much, and it's prime cherry blossom season....enjoy 💮 (I actually have a red cherry blossom tattoo. I love them)
Tumblr media
hi!! thank you!! I feel the same way about your presence in our corner of the void 🧡😂 and thank you for the flowers! Flower tattoo high five 🧡
ok I have come up with a mix of ships and other things. If you like any of them please tell me! I would love to hear your thoughts and it’s cool if you don't like them.

Star Trek
(I have many Kirk/Spock recs but I avoided them here, let me know if you want any. That and DS9.)

Late in life, Picard has an uninvited guest.

These two go together and I think they are fascinating character studies of James Kirk (by elumish) (no ship):

The thing people always forget is that it was a Vulcan ship that reached Tarsus IV first.

and if you'll forgive me for adding one from Deep Space Nine:
Unending Song by AuroraNova rated gen, Jadzia Dax/Worf, 2.7k
When awareness starts to return, Jadzia’s first thought is, Julian pulled off another medical miracle. Then she realizes she’s surrounded by two dozen puzzled Klingons, and she reassesses. She is, in fact, in Sto'Vo'Kor. It's not exactly how she envisioned death.
...
Stargate Atlantis
Ok first, some non-McShep fics:
My Home And Native Land by copperbadge rated T, gen, 17.8k
Ronon's friendship with Chuck, the head Gate Tech of the Atlantis mission, leads him to discover the strange and alien ways of Canadians and helps him lay his past to rest.
Fieldwork by Rheanna rated gen, Ronon/John, 3.1k
Ronon starts his e-mail correspondence with Sheppard's brother more or less by mistake.
I have a soft spot for fics that explore cultural things within the SGA universe, so here's a couple of those:
Pegasus Non-Verbal by igrab rated T, Rodney/John, 6.3k
John always gets a little thrill when he sees Rodney sign at him across the room, casually dissing people literally standing next to him and John is the only one who knows.
Scenes from a Lesser War by amireal rated M, Rodney/John, 20.4k
Don't ask don't tell is repealed and all of Atlantis tries to find their footing, except for John and Rodney, who just try to find each other.
Note: I think the structure of this fic is beautifully done.
and this fic is both beautiful and emotionally devastating. I love it and I cried a lot the first time I read it. It's more of a character study of Rodney and you'll see why if you read it. I can give you more extensive tags than the author did if you want them. I think about this fic like once a year at least. The second, shorter installment in the series is also amazing.
freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose by synecdochic not rated, 19.2k
Because the meaning of life is "do the next thing", and we all carry the seeds of the past into our future. Futurefic, Rodney-centric.
followers celebration

you been doing ok lately gar? you haven’t been posting very much and we miss you
aww this is very nice, thanks for asking about me! I'm 100% fine! the truth is I finished DS9 back in October and I just haven't been as passionate about Star Trek since. I have been running this account for (one month shy of) two years now and during that time I slowly worked my way through TOS, TNG and DS9. Never once during that whole time did I feel even slightly sick of Star Trek, and I never ever ran out of things to say about it. During the last two years, I casually partook in some other medias, but they never occupied as much of my brain space as Star Trek did. I was kind of just always thinking about some aspect of the show, and therefore having tons and tons of post ideas and drawing ideas.
Somehow, over a very short period, I stopped thinking about it every day like I used to. It's not that I don't like it anymore or whatever, its just not in my brain anymore. this is gonna come out of far far far left field and SOME may even feel distressed or disgusted to hear this, but for the last month the thing I've thought about every second of every day has been Disney's Zombies. Yep. I finished DS9 on October 14th and then watched zombies 2 with my friends on October 30th and just got like super super obsessed. maybe it was like an obsession rebound ??? maybe just a sad pitstop in my overall star trek journey before i can fully sink my teeth into ent??
right now i AM watching ent and there is seriously nothing wrong with it. in fact id go as far to say a lot of aspects of the show are more well done than other star trek series. but the thing is I just watch an episode, enjoy myself, and then don't really think about it again. perhaps i just need a cold turkey break for a while from anything star trek related before i can get back into it
I don't want anyone to worry, this isn't going to turn into a Diseny Zombies blog or any other weird thing (i have my side account for that @gars-side-trek if you for some reason wanna follow). Even if i start posting a lot less or even altogether, this will always be a star trek blog! I understand why you all follow me and I'm not gonna change it up on everyone like that. This isn't like a dramatic announcement about me leaving or whatever, and probably a good portion of you don't care what I do/didn't even notice I've been more quite. But i did just look back and realize I posted half as much in November as i did in October, so if anyone else was curious about where I've been there is your answer!

Get to know us!
Hey everybody!  IJustLiveHere and I decided it might be kinda nice to share some info about us, so we can all be a little more personal with each other. We each made a little list of stuff we thought might be kinda fun to share :D
ImagineThat 🦜:
21 years old, pronouns she/her
Lives in the USA
Loves to sing, and enjoys pretty much all genres of music (from the Oh Hellos to the All-American Rejects, from cinematic instrumental to rap :D)
I’m an ENFJ and an Enneagram 9. My top love languages are Quality Time and Words of Affirmation.
Likes: Chocolate, coffee, sunshine, animals (especially cats and birds!), talking with people, having long, complex conversations, encouraging others, drawing (mostly digital art), all types of food (Italian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Greek, Halal, Indian, American, Mexican…. It goes on and on), Christmas (THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR), sharing my interests with other people, and watching movies (All the movies, all the movie quotes, lets goooo.)
Dislikes: Sweet potatoes, most types of squash, mushrooms, disrespect towards others (HUGE pet peeve, especially when it’s directed towards parents or elders), bugs (unless in a documentary), rudeness, hypocrites, cold temperatures, unnecessary/over-the-top gore or crass language (unless I’m writing Bakugo or a character for which swearing is normal for them), horror films (they give me nightmares. I like a good psychological thriller, though) being ignored or otherwise deemed unimportant *sad face*, upsetting others.
Fav Fandoms: My Hero Academia, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Stranger Things, How to Train Your Dragon (films), Lord of the Rings (films and books), Owl House, Avatar the Last Airbender, Star Trek TNG and DS9, Disney (especially pixar, but like the older movies cause the most recent ones are sorta meh), Marvel (not as much any more, gotta admit, although Guardians of the Galaxy 3 SLAPPED) and Hermitcraft
Other fun stuff: I have a fairly big family, two dogs, and I’ve moved seven times in my life. I’ve traveled to nearly every US state and several other countries. I know how to passibly juggle, was once on a swim team (my record for breath holding about 4-5 years ago was 2 minutes!), and I rode horses for a while. My personal mission statement for life is to fight cynicism and negative views, always try to be open-minded and wise, and to always keep improving myself.
IJustLiveHere 🍓:
20, she/they
Based in the USA
I’m a theater person, and love both acting and working behind the scenes. (Like ImagineThat, I also appreciate all music genres)
INFP and Enneagram type 2. My top love languages are Physical Touch and Quality Time, although I appreciate all of them in my own way
Likes: Video games, dnd (playing and streams), sweet things, watermelon (my favorite fruit -despite what my sona may tell you- and I can eat entire melons in one sitting), snow, pretty much all animals, baking, platonic displays of affection, getting clear directions about something, talking about things I love, and listening to people rant about things they’re passionate about
Dislikes: Horror films (I’m really squeamish unless it’s animated or drawn, and spook super easily), pork and things that sneak food dye into it (allergic and makes me sick), the sun (also makes me sick), hot temperatures (haha makes me sick too), making on the spot decisions, and watching things that give me second-hand embarrassment
Fav Fandoms - Anime/Manga: One Piece, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, Haikyuu, Dr. Stone, Fire Force, Hunter X Hunter, Chainsaw Man, Dorohedoro, Assasination Classroom, Mob Psycho 100, Hell’s Paradise, Kaiju no.8… (a whole lot more but the list would be waaaayyy too long if I added them all. Name it and I most likely will be into it)
Fav Fandoms - Cartoons/Shows: Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (but I like the other iterations too), Lego Monkie Kid, Avatar the last Airbender, OG Teen Titans, Marvel (more of a casual fan), Dimension 20 (most definitely not a casual fan… it’s a problem), Critical Role, and Firefly
Other Fun Stuff: Ok some fun facts about me. [1] I tend to get injured in weird ways. For instance: I once cut myself on the round orange part of a pumpkin, and I've accidentally cut myself on a box cutter… by falling onto it face first. (She also somehow managed to stab herself in the hand with a knife while cutting a bagel, then drop the knife on her foot blade-first -ImagineThat). [2] I also rode horses! It was very fun. Unfortunately I had to stop when COVID rolled around 🙁. [3] My favorite number is 13, mostly because I just think it’s neat but also I was 13 years old when I moved out of my home state. [4] I love to bake, but I honestly know nothing about cooking lol. [5] I am a dice gremlin and have more dnd dice sets than any one person probably should, and the same goes for earrings! I love funky dangly earrings and probably have somewhere in the hundreds of pairs. [6] I want to go to Ren Fair or a Cosplay Convention one day but I don’t have the stylish outfits to do so *sigh*. [7] I honestly had never heard of Hermitcraft or Empires until I started beta-ing for Imagine. I’m hooked on those silly little guys now and even though I don’t actually watch the streams Imagine keeps me updated on everything that goes on with them (which I look forward to hearing every time)

Favorite shows tag game
Rules: List 5 favourite shows (in no particular order) and answer questions accordingly.
1. Doctor Who
2. Good Omens
3. Star Trek: The Next Generation
4. Over The Garden Wall
5. MLP:FIM
Kind of an odd list on my part, but I love all of them. Thank you @veraynes-blog for tagging me!
1. Who is your favourite character in 2?
Aziraphale. I’m like Crowley IRL, as interesting of a sentence as that might be, and I absolutely adore Azi. I love his character, I love his little actions and the details put into him, he’s such a sweet and wonderful person.
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1?
Opinion that’ll probably get at least one knife to my neck here, but if I am *fully* honest with myself, Rose or Jack. I just never liked Rose, I love series 1 of nuwho very much because of CE but some of those original scenes with Rose I just couldn’t watch. I’m not a fan of her at all. Give me any companion BUT Rose and I’m happy. 🫠
3. What’s your favourite episode of 4?
Ooh! Definitely into the unknown. when I first watched it so very long ago it really got to me. The real life aspect, showing the kids behind the metaphorical curtain, leading further into fan theories and canon lore, it’s fantastic. Runner up would probably be mad love, because who doesn’t love a talking horse in a mansion.
4. What is your favourite season of 5?
Hmm… probably season 2 or 3. I prefer the older seasons to the newer ones by a bit. But I am partial to newer seasons on account of Sunburst being there. x)
5. What’s your favourite relationship in 3?
Easiest answer of my life. Data and Geordi. No bias on my part, of course… but I adore them. The duality of human /android & the genuine love and care and emotion between them is fantastic. I love their adventures, who doesn’t, and of course I’m a massive fan of the sherlock one in specific.
6. Who is your anti relationship in 2?
I’m also going to steal an answer, Newton and Anathema. I loved Newt, I have a soft spot for, and I say this with love, pathetic loser men with glasses, but I didn’t like them together in the slightest. Blah blah blah, prophecies prophecies prophecies, I’m not for it. It’s just not a pairing I care for even if I love the two by themselves respectively.
7. How long have you watched 1?
Actually, only a little over a year, along with years of casual exposure. I’m just a smidge late to things, as I am to my appointments in real life. The only one in my personal life (IRL, at least) who watches it is my uncle, he’s a big old who (especially four) fan who had no real exposure to nuwho before we watched POTD and some older eleven episodes together, which he did enjoy. Soon he will join the rest of us, I’m sure
8. How did you become interested in 3?
I’ve had a casual interest forever, but got properly into ST as a franchise around when I was in middle school with watching TOS and TNG. My then best friend was a big warsie, and becoming a trekkie didn’t really put as at odds but it was a fun dynamic to have. We were both on the same robotics team for years, her dad having been the coach, and her whole family being big wars fans, so it was entertaining effectively being the sole trek fan in the team lol.
9. Who is your favourite actor in 4?
… actor? Uh, the beast, I suppose. Are they really actors, though? VA wise, Melanie Lynskey with Beatrice or Elijah Wood with Wirt.
10. Which show do you prefer 1, 2 or 5?
One. I love all of them, they’re all very dear to my heart, but nothing will touch DW when it comes to my favorite show. DW and GO are close but DW wins this series I’m afraid.
11. Which show have you seen more episodes of 1 or 3?
Both are “long”, but DW as a whole is just so much longer than one ST series so it’s a no brainer. DW.
12. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Mr. President, Jason Funderberker, Greg’s frog. I think it’d be fun to be a frog taken on adventures through the woods, even if those adventures are horrifying and scarring. I’d even get to sing a few songs along the way
13. How would you kill off your favourite character in 5?
Kill off Sunburst… uh, make antiquing illegal. Probably. Kill off Time Turner… make Derpy disappear. Kill off Perfect Pace… make pocket watches stop working. Boom
14. Would a 3/4 crossover work?
Anything is possible with the right attitude, but I have absolutely no idea how the Enterprise could enter the Unknown, so probably not.
15. Pair two characters in 1 that would make an unlikely, but strangely okay couple.
Stealing a second answer, odd variations of Doc/Mas. I’m fond of 11 and Spymaster, 10 and Spymaster, 13 and Missy, 11 and Simm Master, and I’m going to hold out a bit of copium for 14 somehow meeting Simm Master again. x(
16. Overall, which show has the better cast, 3 or 5?
I’m afraid it’s gotta be TNG, on account of levar burton.
Tagging a few cool people I’ve met here, but anyone is free to do this! @roxannepolice @magpiefrankie @fullofbones4444 @alexmey-does-an-arts

tbh I went into tng not wanting to ship anything or get crazy attached to any characters so I could enjoy the show in a casual sort of way but look where that landed me 🧍

random, yikes, ‘interests’
uhh pr’bably should make a little stack of these
currently: - dnd (we have some!! but it’s extremely casual as a non-player. Mostly crossed-over with) - artemis fowl (i... haven’t actually made any characters to interact, here, but we still can! ...we’d just have to choose one and tweak it a little first. GREAT TO TALK ABOUT THOUGH) - death note (while i no longer have any specific characters that were made for this, rest assured! i do/can still write for/with that, just gotta ask us first) - star trek tng/star trek ds9 but hey i didn’t watch... a lot of things i’ve just been enjoying them (the only immediately obvious muses to play with here are some of my dnd!characters - Dre and Ela are like cop-buddies but not). feel FREE to yell a little in the daisy-chain hotel box though it’s pretty neat-o  - eUHGUEH mlp but really i just like making aus and these slot so fiddly dingily nicely when swapped switched around - not really interested in: canon, plot, characters, world, but really liking pre-Reformation changelings we like bugs (have some characters but they’re mainly weird spins on the m6 + a few children...) - undertale ig... (ye we have quite a few - well, the main source of the ‘sixty-thousand’ in our ‘tag’name - yea osseous-focused but hey). SLSTF/LSTF PRIMARILY BUT WE’LL GET,, TO,, THE REST OF OURS LATER. SOMEDAY. - hp but yikes - no cursed child, sorry (we have!! a bunch?? of characters??! mmostly y’know harry-characters but there’s more-) - naruto!! (juust picked this up being 50 years too late but man it’s... good? actually decent, at least for fan content?) HAVE. LIKE. 9+ MAIN STORIES AND GROWING. - demon slayer !! yes we’re a little late but it’s great! only characters are currently from that one SLSTF/LSTF merged set -- ask away!! if you want to know more
also good but we’re not focusing on them -  steven universe houseki no kuni claymore
this is sad

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S2E9 "The Measure of a Man"
Tumblr media
It has come to my attention while writing this review that this episode has an extended cut which is 57 minutes long, running 13 minutes longer than the version originally broadcast. However, Netflix only has the original broadcast version, which I'll be using for this review.
THE PREMISE
While the Enterprise is visiting Starbase 173 for routine maintenance, cyberneticist Commander Bruce Maddox comes aboard to examine Data. It quickly becomes clear that Maddox intends to transfer Data's memories to the Starbase mainframe computer and disassemble him so he can learn how to replicate Dr Soong's technology. Maddox promises to restore Data and his memories afterwards, Data is concerned that the procedure is riskier than Maddox lets on, and argues that the emotional nuance of his memories will be lost.
Maddox turns to Starfleet to order Data to comply, so Data resigns from Starfleet altogether. However, Maddox argues that Data is Starfleet's property and not a sentient being, and thus does not have the right to make that choice. Picard turns to the sector's Judge Advocate General and his former love interest Captain Philippa Louvois to hold a formal hearing to challenge Starfleet's ruling and determine whether or not Data can be classed as a sentient being or Starfleet property.
MY REVIEW
Episodes like these are why I pushed through the mediocrity of the first season. Because I knew that there was a light at the end of that 25-episode long tunnel. And that light looked like a beard.
I'm not sure where I was going with this analogy. The point is, the episode's great.
Previous holodeck episodes have raised the question of when an artificial life form can be deemed sentient, so it was only right that the idea got an entire episode for it to be explored.
But first, let's talk about this episode's two guest characters.
Maddox is played by Brian Brophy, and his casual demeaning of Data, such as referring to him as an "it" throughout the episode, is reminiscent of how Dr Pulaski treated Data when she was first introduced. But while that bigotry was a poorly thought out attempt to set up a Spock/Bones dynamic, here it's used to paint him as an unlikable prick, as it should. He also shows total disrespect for Data as a person, entering his quarters without permission and rummaging through his belongings.
Tumblr media
Then there's Picard's old flame, Louvois (played by Amanda McBroom), who had parted with him on bad terms several years ago when she prosecuted him for how he handled the Stargazer's encounter with the Ferengi (see my review of "The Battle" for an explanation). When she meets Picard again, she wastes no time flirting with him. She clearly enjoys her little spats with Picard, but she quickly drops the jokey attitude when she sees how serious he is about Data.
Tumblr media
When they discover Data's resignation, the crew throw him an impromptu farewell party, which is a nice way of showing how much he means to the rest of the crew. Strangely enough, Data feels pushed to the sidelines somewhat despite the episode's plot revolving around him. But he still gets some good character moments, including an interaction with Geordi - who's probably Data's best friend at this point - when it looks like he's about to leave the ship for good. It's also heartwarming to see that he has items which actually hold sentimental value for him, such as his medals, a book given to him by Picard, and a hologram of a certain late Chief of Security.
Tumblr media
But when Data is asked why Yar was important to him, his only reason is because he and her were "intimate." Goddammit TNG; even after she's dead, you still can't do Yar's character justice.
Anyway, the real conflict of the episode is the trial to determine the nature of Data's sentience.
It shouldn’t be that hard. Just show him some pictures and get him to choose the ones with traffic lights in them.
Due to a shortage of qualified legal staff, Riker is chosen to represent Maddox. Riker gets to work proving that Data is indeed a machine, showing his circuitry and programming, even using his off switch to temporarily shut him down. Preventing such damning evidence against Data might make Riker seem unlikable, but he's clearly remorseful and without his participation the trial never could've happened in the first place.
Picard's confidence in his argument is understandably shaken after Riker's display, so he calls for a recess and meets with Guinan in Ten Forward. She points out that Maddox's plans for reproducing Data's technology would create an army tantamount to slavery.
Picard uses this to restructure his case, calling Maddox as a witness and tricking him into conceding that Data fulfilled his criteria for sentience - intelligence and self-awareness - and proves that proving Data's sentience is too nebulous of a concept for them to determine. In one of the best scenes of the series so far, Picard argues that creating more androids like Data would be the beginnings of a race, and a sentient race defined as property would be sanctioning slavery and going against everything that Starfleet stands for.
Louvois decides that none of them are fit to determine the nature of Data's sentience, and rules that he has the right to choose. Data gets up from his chair, walks over to Maddox, and somehow manages to say "I refuse the procedure" in a way which sounds like he's very politely saying "go fuck yourself."
And yet Data clearly holds no ill will towards Maddox, and even offers to assist in his further research when Maddox has had more time to study and hone his techniques. And Maddox refers to Data as a "he" for the first time.
The episode was written by Melinda M. Snodgrass, who had previously written the Original Series novel "The Tears of the Singers." After her standout work on this episode, she was hired as a staff writer and story editor for the series, but would depart by the end of the third season.
9/10 - The emotional beats could've used a bit more room to breathe (maybe that's improved in the extended cut?) but aside from that, TNG has given us its first truly great episode.
I'm probably jumping the gun a bit here, but I think I've found my winner for best episode of the season, unless they have something else in store. And after an episode like this, I'm excited to see if they do. Onward!

Sometimes I think it would be nice to be able to just watch something without becoming obsessed with it; just casually watching a show or a movie and then moving on sounds really nice. I do do that with some shows and movies of course - but there's usually at least one thing that I'm obsessed with. I think this will get long so -
And it's cool sometimes because I often enjoy loving something so much that I cannot stop thinking about it, and the amount of joy I can sometimes get from it is huge.
But at the same time it's so exhausting? It's so exhausting to only want to think about this one thing, and often only be able to think about it and nothing else. Sometimes I'll be so fucking excited about the thing that I cannot actually focus on the thing (like, I love Star Trek TNG right now, but I often have to watch episodes twice because I just can't focus because I'm too busy thinking about the show to actually watch it, and I think when I eventually rewatch it there will be many episodes that I will have no memory of at all).
Sometimes this actually keeps me from starting things I want to watch because with certain things I just know I'll love them too much, and sometimes it seems like too much work to be that invested in something for like two to six months - only to then find a new thing and forgetting all about the old one. It's painful and tbh it's also just... annoying. All I really want is to be one of those people who like the same thing for a long time. I know a little about a lot of things because I've liked so many shows/movies but I've never had one constant interest. I like something so much that it physically hurts somehow, find out all I can about it, spend all my time thinking about it, get so invested in it that it becomes my entire personality... and then it's just over one day and all of that gets thrown out of my brain to make room for the next thing. It sucks.
The only times I've not been obsessed with anything at all have been the worst times of my life, though, so I can't really imagine not being obsessed and also being happy at the same time, because I have no concept of what that would feel like. It only happens when I'm too depressed to care about anything anymore, or so busy that I have no time for anything else (as in, when I worked and would fall asleep immediately as soon as I came home, or when I had a lot of exams in a short period of time, or when I was my dad's carer and didn't even have time to sleep for more than two hours at a time for months).

What did I do this morning? If you guessed ‘compile all of Sarek’s outfits for no particular reason’ you were right. If you guessed that it took me over three hours, you were also right. Sigh.
I’ll go in real world chronological order, so we’ll go TOS to TAS to movies to TNG to DSC.
Outfit #1 is so chill, so casual, so unremarkable. He will never, ever, ever wear something this boring again, so enjoy it while you can.
Tumblr media
Outfit #2, the green sparkle chest outfit begins to give some indication of Sarek’s True Self. It still involves trousers, which is something that you won’t see very often on this man, but that whole chest area is amazing, and the green and gold stripes on his arm? Very much appreciated.
Tumblr media
Outfit #3, Look... this is TAS. He doesn’t have the budget for drama, but it’s still more him than that first outfit was. (Spock on the other hand... I do not know.)
Tumblr media
Outfit #4 from Search for Spock is the most dramatic anyone can look in earth tones. He’s got a big hood  for a dramatic reveal, and he’s begun wearing absurdly large rings.
Tumblr media
Outfit #5, also from Search for Spock. Still in those earth tones, but now with a golden chest plate with huge gem stones and more layers.
Tumblr media
Outfit #6 from The Voyage Home. Still into these earth tones, but now paired with silver and black instead of gold and red. Very respectable while still maintaining just enough flair to be Sarek.
Tumblr media
Outfit #7 from the end of The Voyage Home. He’s back to his golds and reds. He’s also wearing what appears to be something like a torque with a huge gem on it? And the Vulcan script down the front is Classic.
Tumblr media
Outfit #8 is from TNG, so Sarek is getting into the last years of his life... but that’s not going to keep him from being Extra as hell. He’s got layers on layers on layers, he’s got his big red gems, he’s got an absurdly large ring... He also has another hood for a dramatic reveal, but I couldn’t get a good shot of it.
Tumblr media
Outfit #9. This appears to be some kind of housecoat? He only wears it in his quarters, and is possibly what he sleeps in. And it’s a quilted white and gold asymmetric wrap robe with puffy sleeves and tight cuffs and a big slit in the front and of course he still has his gigantic rings on.
Tumblr media
Outfit #10, the last we will be chronicling for Mark Lenard’s Sarek. At first blush, it appears to be somewhat conservative for him... The colors are very muted, there are trousers involved, and there’s only a LITTLE gold lettering along the collar, but. Look at those lines, look at those sleeves, look at that asymmetric neckline. Look, completing a treaty with an incredibly touchy species that’s 93 years in the making is not excuse not to serve looks.
Tumblr media
Outfit #11 is our first James Frain look from when Sarek is a young man of 90-something. In his first appearance, we can see what to expect from this man. Pointy shoulders, high collars, and just... not even pretending we’re not wearing dresses at this point. Excellent and intimidating. Also, welcome to Discovery lighting. I’m not fixing it for this post. I’m so sorry.
Tumblr media
Outfit #12 is very similar to the previous outfit, and it’s also pretty difficult to get a shot of that’s lit at all! That collar is made just a little more extra the... structure of the chest area? I don’t know enough about costuming to know words for this, but I’m a fan of whatever the hell’s going on here.
Tumblr media
Outfit #13 is just great, because it’s in contrast with Michael dressing like a normal ass Vulcan. Still quite a dramatic look she’s got on, but then there’s Sarek. With what appears to be a dress length coat with That Collar over ANOTHER dress length robe underneath it. And those shoulders. Wow.
Tumblr media
Outfit #14 is a little hard to get a good shot of, but I think I’ve captured it here. It’s a fairly simple wrap, with a black and greenish checkery texture? Dress length again, but he seems to be wearing some trousers underneath it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit #15 is from a Very Yellow flashback. It is fairly muted for him. Just a greeny-gold wrap over a white wrap. What I can’t quite capture is how nicely this particular outfit moves, although you can see it being blown about a little in the second capture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit #16 is another one that’s very hard to capture, but is Very, Very good. This one is only thigh length, with some loose trousers underneath it, but the way he moves in it is So Dramatic and swishy, and it’s a very nice cut on him.
Tumblr media
Outfit #17 is a fairly subdued black coat with a not very subdued collar. You need to accentuate those ears at all times, okay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit #18 is from another flashback that’s thankfully less yellow. A simple little get up to sit around at home that happens to be another outfit that somehow has a wrap neckline and a turtleneck type collar. That texture gives it that little subtle touch of Extra though.
Tumblr media
Outfit #19 is just a neat little look for meditating to try to telepathically track down your son, as you do. Cute collar with the little white wrap underneath it. Again, the texture really adds a lot and we love a pointy shoulder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Outfit #20 is our last outfit. A simple outfit for Admitting Mistakes, but that little touch of black on black embroidery is a great note to end this post on.
Tumblr media
I hope everyone has enjoyed this exploration of Sarek and his Looks of Excellence.
