"farkle?" riley asks softly, head lifting to look at the other. "do you ever think that maybe i'm getting too old to be ... riley." she pauses for a moment. "i mean, i carry glitter in my pockets, i paint purple cats, i might've gave my room a makeover but i'm still ... i don't know, i just feel like maybe it's time for me to actually grow up." she adds quietly, barely just loud enough for farkle to hear. "and maybe that's why people don't like me sometimes."

A sigh leaves his lips, and shakes his head lightly, “Did I though? It doesn’t feel like it.” There is a rare vulnerable side to Farkle that only his friends get to see, and right now it’s showing itself. “I should have done better.”

The Right People: Ch. 1
Summary: Its Junior Year of college and after the break-up with her ex-girlfriend Riley Matthews wants to focus on school and her friends, most especially her new friendship with Lucas. She’s hoping that with the right people this year will be a great one.  Fancast: x A/N: This is a bisexual Riley Matthews, so if you don’t like that you don't have to read. This will deal with topics and instances of emotional abuse(TW) so if you are senstive to that proceed with causation. But I am very excited to write this story! I don’t know where it will lead, but I hope you enjoy it none the less. If you want to be tagged in future posts let me know and let me know your tag. ENJOY!  Word Count: 2,205
Lucas and Zay were excited to be back on campus for their junior year. The two had spent the summer in Texas where they grew up and well they had fun with their friends from high school they were dying to see the tight group they had created last year once again. They had already seen Farkle briefly when they moved in but where anxious to see the rest. They had all agreed to meet at the local café on campus to catch up before classes the next day.
Lucas had met Farkle in a science class of his and had enjoyed the genius’ wit. Zay had met Maya in an art class and the two had it off as art friends. It wasn’t long before they were all hanging out in a group that also included Farkle’s girlfriend Isadora Smackle. The one person that was missing from their group almost always was Riley. Zay had met her once, but then she had to leave to go see her girlfriend and he didn’t get to talk to her much. Zay and Lucas knew that no one liked Riley’s girlfriend, they often talked about how she didn’t treat Riley right. But Riley saw the good in her and stayed. Despite this the others assured the boys they would love Riley.  Lucas especially, Maya just felt they had a lot in common personality wise.
The boys found their four friends at a booth. Giving hugs all around. Lucas was the first to ask about Riley, he had really been looking forward to meeting her.
“Hey guys isn’t Riley supposed to be here? I was looking forward to meeting her, she isn’t hanging out with her girlfriend right?” That was the usual reason Riley gave for not being able to meet up with them, but he immediately regretted asking that way when he was the fire in Maya’s eyes.
“She better not be anywhere near that awful bitch. God.” Maya shook her head and softened her look at Lucas, “They broke up over the summer for not the best reasons. It’s Riley’s story to tell, but lets just say her girlfriend did a real number on her. So if she’s not the bright sunshine we told you about, that’s why. She’s here I promise she just had…a moment and went to the bathroom. Look there she is now!” Maya waved over at one of the prettiest girls Lucas had ever seen. She had long legs and a shy expression on her soft face. Her brown hair was just above her shoulders with the ends of it dyed purple. She sat in between Maya and Lucas offering him her hand with a small smile.
“Hi, I’m assuming you’re Lucas. I’m Riley. I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you got here, its really my fault I-“ She was cut off by Maya who gave her a firm “Honey.” With a hard look and Riley quickly quit her ramble.
“It’s really nice to meet you Riley. I really like your hair.” He commented, he couldn’t help but want to reach out and touch it but he thought that might be weird.
“Really? You like it?” Riley asked surprise evident in her tone, “Maya helped me dye it. I’ve wanted to dye it and cut it for a while but Paula said I wasn’t allowed to.” Riley replied with a shrug
“Who’s Paula?” Lucas asked with a frown, he didn’t think anyone should be telling Riley what to do with her appearance.
“Oh….my ex-girlfriend.” Riley answered softly
“You mean the devil?” Maya asked earning a look from Riley, who gave it to her right back. “Paula was a royal bitch Honey. I’m going to keep saying it until you understand that.”
“She wasn’t that bad. I mean like I could do any better than her anyway. She was right about that.” Riley replied
“JAR!” Maya, Smackle and Farkle shouted at Riley. Riley sighed as she pulled her backpack onto the table. Lucas noticed a variety of buttons on it but before he could get a good look she opened it to pull out a little mason jar with scraps of paper.
As she did this Farkle spoke up, “Since Riley will be spending more time with us all, you guys should know about the jar. Whenever she says something self-depreciating about herself she has to counter it with the jar. We all wrote good things about her, we take turns reading it to her.”
“Its to build her back up when she tears herself down. Much like when building a house you must go brick by brick. We go phrase by phrase.” Smackle tacked on.
Riley sighed, “Who’s turn is it this time?”
“I can read it Sugar if you want.” Zay offered, Riley nodded and handed him the paper
“ From Maya, you’re the best person I know. Let the Rileytown flag wave.” Zay read. Lucas noticed an obvious cringe at the term “Rileytown” from Riley.
He changed the subject, “So what did y’all do this summer?”
“Really Huckleberry? Y’all?” Maya asked with a teasing tone.
The conversation continued on like normal. The group all shared classes they had and it turned out Riley and Lucas had English together. They made plans to walk to class together the next day. Lucas couldn’t help but get caught up in the brunette’s eyes when they talked. At one point Riley excused herself to go back to her dorm, she was rooming with Maya and Smackle this year. Farkle and Smackle were leaving too, so they told Riley they’d walk her. Smackle was going back to Farkle’s place. He, Lucas and Zay lived together as well.
“Peaches you stay, I’m just going to take a nap anyway.” She gave Maya a hug and waved goodbye to everyone. Lucas watched her go with a saddened expression; he wanted to keep talking to her. She seemed sad, he couldn’t help but want to make her smile or lift the weight that seemed to be on her shoulders.
Maya noticed this and gave Zay a look, he had noticed to. “Wow Huckleberry you met her once and you’re already in love with her?” Maya teased him with a smirk
“Whhhaat I’m not in love with her I just met her. She just looks so sad I just want to help. Anyway isn’t she just into girls?”
Zay and Maya laughed at him, “Sundance did you not see her backpack? She had like four bi-pride pins. Are you that dense? Do I need to re-come out to you and explain what bi means again?” Maya asked as she nudged him
“What…No. I was just didn’t catch them. Do…do you think she’d be interested in me? I mean.. not that I’m going to ask her out…I mean maybe…but didn’t she just break up with her girlfriend? Doesn’t she need time?” Lucas asked directing his question at Maya. He knew their story, the two had been best friends forever. He was sure Maya knew her better than anyone. Maya sighed deeply.
“They broke up at the very end of the school year and she’s had all summer. Like I said it did a number on her. But she told me she’s open to the idea of dating again, but she’s not going to seek it out. Just…try to be her friend first. She could use someone as good as you in her life right now. She’s going to have a hard semester. She’s an English major ya know? And besides that personal narrative class you’re taking together, she’s taking poetry and then gen-eds. Its going to be a lot of writing about her feelings and she’s still working on all that. Just like…don’t push her. And both of you remember the jar. And if you have any little notes like that, you can give some to me and I’ll shove them in there for her.”
Lucas nodded his head. Zay piped up, “Of course. I’m just curious where did the jar idea come from? That’s a really cool way to help.” Zay asked
Maya gave a soft smile, “It was her idea, and she’s always said it always mattered more to her what people say about her than what she says about herself. That’s why Paula was so bad for her. She believed everything that ho-bag said. So now we’re trying to build her back up.”
Lucas decided right then and there that he was going to do just that; he was going to help build Riley back up.
---
Riley had already had her gen-ed classes in the morning and now she was packing her backpack for the English class she was going to with Lucas. Lucas, his name made her heart flutter. There was just something about him that drew her to him, sure he was handsome he was around 6 ft tall with dirty blonde hair and don’t even get her started on his eyes. But there was something more than just his appearance that drew her in, she couldn’t explain it. She was glad when a knock on her door pulled her out of her thoughts.
She grabbed her bag and opened it so see Lucas who gave her a wide smile.
“Wow Riley you look great! You ready to go” Riley nodded her head unable to respond verbally after such a nice compliment. She was worried about dressing for the first day so she had opted for her Jesus sandals a jean shirt and a white shirt with colored designs on the sleeves. They chatted about their days so far and it felt so easy to talk to Lucas. He smiled and nodded as she talked and looked genuinely interested. Today was going to be a good day Maya was right! Riley entered the English building with a newfound sense of hope for the year.
There was still a class in the room their class was meeting in so they stood off to the side continuing to chat. It was going great until Riley spotted her and felt her body run cold. Paula. Of course she still looked gorgeous, she hadn’t seen Riley yet but Riley couldn’t help but feel her fight or flight kick in. She didn’t want Paula to see her; she wasn’t ready to talk to her. But she couldn’t miss class, her panic was slowly rising. That was until she felt Lucas grab her hand.
Lucas wasn’t sure what had caused it but one second Riley was smiling and chatting with him the next she was looking over at someone and then she went limp. He could sense the panic in her eyes and she looked she was going to bolt any second. So he did the only thing he could think of, he intertwined his fingers with hers. It seemed to calm her down, and he had to admit her tiny palm against his sent tingles up his arm. He saw Riley take a few deep breathes before she turned her attention back to him.
“Thank you.” Riley gave his hand a squeeze; she was terrified he would remove it from her grasp. When he held her hand a wave of calm swept through her, she needed the calm he provided. Lucas just nodded and gripped her hand tighter.
The class before them got out and they waited for the students to trickle out before they went in. Riley thought she heard her name being called so she turned her head around and was wished she hadn’t. Paula saw her and Lucas holding hands, and although she didn’t see who Lucas was she saw Riley holding someone else’s hand. Paula gave a disgusted look before Lucas pulled Riley into the classroom.
Riley held onto to Lucas’ hand as they found their seats and even once they sat down. It worked because she had Lucas’ right hand and her had her left. Lucas was a lefty and Riley was right handed. She gave him a small smile as they adjusted as they waited for their teacher.
Their teacher went through their syllabus with them. Telling them important dates and when they wouldn’t have class, giving them general guidelines for class. She then told them to look at the person next to them. Riley and Lucas quickly looked at each other.
“This person will be your partner for the semester. You two will share your writing giving feedback to one another as much as you wish outside of class. But for the purpose of this class they’re you’re partners.” After explaining what they would do next class she dismissed the class.
Lucas gave Riley a smile as they got their stuff and walked out, still holding hands.
“Looks like you’ll be seeing a lot of me this semester.” Lucas told Riley as they got to her door. She giggled at him releasing his hand
“That I will I’m excited. I think we’re all meeting up for diner later? So I’ll see you then?” She asked Lucas shyly biting her lip.
“Of course, I’ll see you there Riley”
With that the two parted ways, Riley walked in smiling but already missing the warmth of his palm against hers. Maybe things were looking up.

Summer Storm
○ ONE SHOT ○
Prompt: This combines a number of summer vacation prompts I’ve been sent. All will be credited at the end of the one shot.
Summary: The gang (along with Josh) head to the Minkus’ family beach house for a week of fun in the sun. On their last night in town a storm hits.
Pairing: Rucas, ft. light Smarkle + Joshaya
Word Count: 3390
○ ○ ○
The Minkus family own a holiday home in Malibu and by home, I mean an extravagant mansion right on the beach. The family however, barely use the house despite having owned it for a number of years.
Although, when Stuart has company business to handle over the summer in Malibu he sees it as an opportunity to use the facilities. Considering he’d be mostly out and occupied with business he urges his son to plan a vacation around it with his friends.
Eventually all five friends manage to convince their parents to allow them to go on the trip and they were all off on a Malibu adventure in a matter of days. On first arrival at the mansion, everyone - with the exception of Farkle, whom is used to its grandeur - is blown away by the sheer size of it all.
Riley immediately finds herself spinning in the grand entrance, her eyes dancing around the room as she tries to absorb every beautiful detail of the building.
“Whoa,” Riley stops her twirling when she catches a glimpse of the lavish chandelier hanging above her head.
Everyone takes note of Riley’s gasp and each point their gazes in the same direction as hers. More gasps of astonishment follow. Farkle stands by awkwardly as he’s never been a fan of showing off how wealthy his family is.
“Farkle, why don't you give your friends the grand tour?” Stuart clears his throat.
Excitedly, all Farkle’s friends turn to face him. The genius holds in his sigh and takes everyone around the house. On the first floor the genius shows them the kitchen, the dining room, living space, home theatre and built in bowling alley before taking them out onto the patio where there’s a pool overlooking the sandy beaches and ocean waves.
They all go back inside cooing their amazement at the place with one another and Farkle is burning red with embarrassment at this point.
“Come on,” He clears his throat, “I can show you guys to the rooms.”
“Ah yes,” Stuart makes himself known again, an arm around his wife, “All bedrooms are upstairs and I’m under strict instructions that it’s boys with boys and girls with girls.”
“Mr. Matthews the stiff,” Maya jokes with a scoff.
“Actually Maya, Shawn was the first one to bring it up,” Mr. Minkus gives her a knowing look.
Maya giggles at her protective adoptive father and Riley smiles at how happy that makes her friend.
The group climb the extravagant staircase and all pause at the top of the stairwell. Mr. and Mrs. Minkus’ room is directly adjacent and on either side of their door are a rooms with attached bathrooms. Farkle points the girls in one direction and leads the guys in the other.
In the girls room, Riley squeals upon entering. She’s sure this room alone is bigger than her entire apartment. The wall on the far side of the room isn’t even a wall at all, it’s completely made up of floor to ceiling glass windows giving them a stunning view of the ocean.
On one side of the room there is an enormous bed, one that would fit all three girls, three times over and they’d all still sleep comfortably. Adjacent to the bed is a flat screen television mounted on the wall. The room was that large that it even had enough space for a grand lounge setting.
Next the girls inspect the bathroom and gasps escape them all again. It’s magnificent and light. Grand, just like the rest of the house. Riley’s eyes widen as she sees the large bathtub and a completely separate rainfall shower, double sink basins. Everything about it made Riley feel like she was a celebrity.
In the boys room the view is much the same with the entire far side being floor to ceiling windows. An enormous bed rests against one wall much like the girls room but they also had the addition of a slightly smaller - but still enormous - bed on the opposite wall.
After getting over the initial excitement the gang prepare themselves to hit the beach. The wave bye to Farkle’s parents and take the short walk down to the beach. With the weather being warm there are other people on the beach but it’s not overly crowded.
The group set up their belongings on a nice semi-secluded spot adjacent to the beach house. Riley lays out her purple beach towel, removes her summer dress exposing her newly purchased swimsuit and sits herself down on the towel, applying sunscreen. Maya sits by Riley, a very wide brim floppy hat on her head, oversized sunglasses perched on the brim of her nose, distressed denim shorts and an oversized band tee covering her swimsuit.
“You okay, Peaches?” Riley fights the urge to giggle.
“No,” Maya whines, “You know I burn easily. I don’t have lovely skin like you or Smackle.”
Smackle - whom is on Riley’s other side starts spitting some scientific jargon about what actually makes Maya’s skin prone to burning but the two other girls look at her with blank faces so she gives up.
“Come on, we’re here for a whole week. You have to swim at least once,” Riley waves the sunscreen tube in her hand, “How many times is an amazing vacation like this going to be handed to us for free?”
“Fine,” Maya sighs as she reaches for the bottom of her shirt and pulls it over her head.
Riley helps her friends apply sunscreen because that’s the responsible thing to do and the girls help reach the places on Riley’s back she couldn’t while the boys were already off throwing a football to each other. Well, Zay and Lucas were whilst Farkle stood by looking like he wished he wasn’t.
“I think maybe you should save Farkle,” Riley nudges Smackle’s arm with a giggle.
“He doesn’t appear to be in any danger,” Smackle gives her a quizzical look.
“Danger of dying of boredom maybe.” Maya chuckles.
Smackle locks eyes with Farkle and waves for him to come over. To which he looks thankful for and is with the girls in a second. They joke about how much fun he’s having and he responds with his usual mocking noises.
Maya sits with her knees brought close to her chest and Riley sits cross-legged when Zay and Lucas return to them. Lucas holds out his hand to help Riley up.
“Swim?” He asks simply and Riley bounces up in excitement and the two frolick towards the oceans edge.
“Swim?” Zay imitates Lucas and holds a hand out for Maya. Maya reluctantly accepts his offer.
When she’s standing she looks down at her bare stomach. “I’m so white.” Maya groans.
“Me too,” Zay jokes and he manages to get Maya to crack a smile.
The pair go and join their friends in the surf and the two geniuses aren't too far behind them. The six frolic in the waves together, laughter a constant presence. The always graceful Riley manages to lose her balance almost every time a wave crashes into her but Lucas was always right there to catch her. Although, Riley managed to find herself too far away from the group as she’d been unaware she was drifting out further when a wave dumps her and she’s trapped in its spiral, too panicked to find a way out. Luckily, Lucas spots her in distress and quickly comes to her rescue, helping free Riley from the watery grip of the wave. The Texan helps Riley to a spot where she can find her footing and stand on her own. The brunette coughing as the salt water had pierced her throat.
“Are you alright?” Maya comes over in a panic. The rest of the friends close behind her, also expressing concern of their own.
“I’m fine,” Riley says with her heart racing as she tries to catch her breath. “Thanks to Lucas,” she smiles sweetly at him and he tries to act as if that didn’t just completely stroke his hero complex. (I LOVE HIM OKAY, NO HATE Just imagine how cute and proud he’d look after saving her fhgkldgjhk)
Maya pulls Riley in for a tight embrace but tenses completely when a familiar voice calls out to them from the sand.
“You guys started without me?” He shouts.
Maya begins to chuckle knowingly and slowly turns around to find Josh standing on the shore line. Lucas jogs over to greet him.
“Riley,” Maya says to her best friend but doesn’t dare break her stare from the college boy on the beach.
“Did I forget to mention that my dad asked my Uncle Josh to come along and keep an eye on us?” Riley sways innocently.
“I think I’d recall anything involving your Uncle Boing,” Maya turns to face her, “Because if you had told me I would have been acting like a complete idiot and your father would have thought that it was a bad idea.. Ohhhh, I see.”
“You’re welcome.” Riley giggles.
“Maybe I should pretend to drown.” Maya says seriously.
“Why?” Zay asks.
“So Josh can save me.” Maya’s wide grin doesn’t waver.
“I nearly died, Maya!” Riley shrieks, “This isn’t some game.”
“I know, I know,” Maya swats the air, “But if I’m lucky I’ll get my first kiss with your Uncle.”
“Mouth to mouth doesn’t count as a first kiss,” Riley gives her a look.
“Yeah, be careful,” Zay pats the blondes shoulder, “Smackle is the most qualified here... You might be locking lips with her.”
“I wouldn’t object,” Farkle states and all three girls look at him in distaste before splashing him.
Eventually - after Maya regains her cool composure - they all join Riley’s uncle and Lucas on the sand.
“Sorry I’m late,” Josh side hugs his niece, “I had to tie up a few things back at campus first.”
“No problem at all,” Riley grins, “Glad you could make it.”
The rest of the day is spent soaking up the sun and enjoying the wonderful beach atmosphere. That’s how it was for days. The seven teenagers would laze about in the sun on the beach or by the pool and on a few occasions the girls went to check out a few of the shops around. When the weather proved to be too warm for the group they’d spend time inside watching movies in the theatre room or playing a few games of bowling.
On the day before they’re set to return to New York, a weather warning is issued. With the skies covered in ominous dark clouds the group decide to order pizzas and settle in for a movie night. The theatre room had a large projector screen on one wall and at least a dozen roomy recliner chairs that the group scatter themselves amongst.
Riley begins on her own seat to the right of Lucas and left of Maya but once they’re two horror movies deep Riley wedges herself into Lucas’ extra space on the chair as she was much too scared on her own. Lucas of course happily welcomes her as he loved feeling like a protector when it comes to Riley.
After the second scary film wraps up Riley insists they watch a comedy to lighten the mood and her anxious thoughts, it seems to work as she’s drifting off to sleep by the end of it.
Riley is woken by Lucas as he tries to carefully get out of the seat without disturbing her.
“I didn’t mean to wake you.” Lucas speaks softly.
“Is the movie over?” Riley wipes at her tired eyes.
“Yeah, everyone’s gone to bed.” Lucas says.
Riley looks around and notices the room is empty. Lucas extends a hand and helps the still sleepy Riley up from the chair. With an arm around her shoulder, Lucas leads Riley out of the theatre room. Riley jumps in fright immediately as a loud thunder clap sounds. Now out of the soundproof theatre room Riley realises that storm warning was now in full effect. The rain was pelting down so loudly Riley wondered if it was really hailing. Lucas steadies Riley and tells her it’s just a storm.
As the couple are nearing the staircase they spot Maya and Josh sitting on opposite armchairs by the closed patio doors.
“Whoa.” Riley says with wide eyes as she looks out the glass noticing how dark it was and how heavy the rainfall is.
“I love watching storms.” Josh says with a grin.
“It’s kinda pretty, hey Riles?” Maya turns her head back to her friend with a smile.
Another loud thunderclap sounds and burst of lightning illuminates the outside area momentarily, surprising Riley in the process, it causes her to jump in fright again.
“Just beautiful.” Riley grumbles sarcastically with a frown.
Josh shares a light chuckle over his niece being frightened by storms but Maya gives her a sympathetic smile.
“I’ll be up there in a second.” Maya says to Riley.
“No monkey business down here you two.” Lucas jokes with a smirk.
“Yeah and you say that with an arm around my niece.” Josh glares at the younger but much bigger boy. “Don’t get any ideas,” Josh turns to Maya with a panicked look on his face. The blonde sports her cute monkey imitation causing the college boy to smile.
Lucas leads Riley upstairs and with every thunder clap that sounds she grips even tighter to his side. They stop outside of Riley’s room, their voices at whispers as they guessed Mr. and Mrs. Minkus were asleep in their own room next door. Another thunder clap and another jumpy reaction from Riley.
“I hate storms.” Riley huffs quietly. “I can never fall asleep during them.”
“Did you want me to stay with you?” Lucas asks sheepishly.
“No!” Riley answers embarrassed.
“I just meant I could sit with you if you were scared.” Lucas shrugs.
“No it’s okay, I mean the girls are in my room, the boys in yours just- no thank you.” Riley blushes.
“Okay, well you know where to find me if you get too scared.” Lucas gives Riley a kiss on the cheek before heading to his own room.
Riley enters her suite, Smackle is already sound asleep on the far side of the bed. Riley shimmies under the covers beside her and tries to block out the noisy storm outside. She has no such luck.
Eventually Maya tip toes into the room and climbs into bed on the other side of Riley.
“You’re still awake?” Maya whispers once she noticed Riley stir.
“Yes.” Riley whispers back, nervously gripping the edge of the blanket as she pulls it up around her neck.
Maya sleepily rolls over, her back to Riley as she whispers, “You’re not thinking about the scary movie are you?”
“I am now!” Riley whisper panics.
“It was just a movie.” Maya yawns, “And it’s just a storm, Riles. Try and get some sleep.”
Easier said than done. Riley sits awake for another hour, her two friends fast asleep on either side of her, every thunder clap and every lightning flash that sneaks through the crack of the curtains makes Riley tense up in fear. Terrifying scenarios of crazed killers waiting out in the storm play through her mind like she’s watching another horror film.
“Maya?” Riley whispers. No answer. “Smackle?” Again no answer. Finally Riley carefully shimmies her way out of the middle of the bed and tiptoes out of the room, down the hall and all the way into the darkness of the boys suite.
It’s pitch black and Riley is regretting her decision in coming over here. Then, another lighting flash illumines the room and Riley uses this as a way to work out where everyone was. Josh is asleep on the plush sofa after coming in late that evening after watching the storm with Maya. A crash of thunder sounds and Riley tenses up, she wonders how everyone can be sleeping so peacefully with all this terrifying noise. Another lightning flash and Riley notices Farkle and Zay sleeping on the massive bed against the wall. Then, another flash sees Riley finally finding Lucas asleep on the slightly smaller bed on the opposite side of the room. Riley tiptoes her way over to him.
“Lucas,” She whispers quietly as she gently nudges his shoulder.
“Riley?” Lucas asks sleepily and she’s thankful that he’s not a heavy sleeper or otherwise she might have woken up the other guys in the room if she got any louder.
“I’m scared.” Riley admits and another loud thunder clap sees her jumping in place.
Lucas wriggles over a bit and pats the space beside him. Riley chews nervously on her bottom lip.
“What if people see?” Riley asks embarrassed. She’s thankful it’s dark in the room because she knew her cheeks would be burning red.
“We’re just waiting out the storm.” Lucas can’t help but yawn. “Besides, you said you never fall asleep during a storm, you can just leave before anyone wakes up?”
Another thunder clap, another jumpy reaction and Riley quickly climbs in beside Lucas on the bed. Awkwardly she lays next to him on her side, no contact between them, her eyes had adjusted to the darkness so she could make out the basic outline of Lucas’ features without needing the lighting flashes to illuminate him.
Right now Riley was more nervous about sharing a bed with Lucas than she was about the storm but eventually she calms down and lets Lucas comfort her when it came to the storm. His efforts seemed to work as Riley managed to doze off.
The next morning there’s not a single drop of rain to be seen. It’s as if the monster storm of the night before was a very distant memory. Riley wakes to the sound of someone clearing their throat, beside her Lucas wakes too. Somewhere in the night Riley found herself pinned comfortably under Lucas’ arm and she remains there that morning.
Riley’s eyes adjust to the light in the room and she sees five faces staring down at her. Lucas releases Riley from his grip in an embarrassed hast as Zay, Maya, Farkle, Isadora and Josh all wear various expressions on their faces, mostly amused but Josh didn’t seem too impressed.
“No monkey business, huh?” Josh asks with folded arms, his gaze directed at Lucas.
“I hate storms.” Riley groans with embarrassment as she pulls the covers over her face realising she’s been caught.
“You know, I think I don’t mind them.” Lucas says with a goofy smile on his face.
“Yeah I bet.” Zay says with a smirk and Josh lightly smacks him over the head.
“Cory doesn’t hear about any of this, okay?” Josh addresses the group looking defeated.
“Sure thing, Boing.” Maya sways on her feet with a devilish smirk. “And Shawn doesn’t hear about last night either.”
“Last night?” Riley throws the covers back with urgency. All eyes point to a very smirky Maya and wide eyed Josh.
“Nothing happened last night!” Josh says defensively.
“But it could have.” Maya teases playfully.
“No it couldn’t have.” Josh matches her tone but he was a little more frazzled.
“You’re going to get the poor boy in trouble.” Zay shakes his head.
Josh wants to talk about literally anything else so he decides to assert his authority. “Okay so we’re leaving in an hour, boys and girls lets get some distance and get to packing, okay?”
“Okay.” Maya says still wearing a devilish smirk. “See you in an hour.”
Josh shakes his head and makes his way over to his things and everyone seems to scatter.
“Morning.” Lucas says to Riley with a slightly sheepish smile.
“Morning.” Riley laughs at the awkwardness of it all.
“I thought you couldn’t sleep through storms?” Lucas says.
“I don’t normally,” Riley shrugs but with a small smile she says, “Then again I don’t normally have you with me.”
“Have I mentioned lately how much I like storms?” Lucas grins.
“Once or twice.” Riley crinkles her nose cutely.
“Riley.” Josh says knowingly from the other side of the room.
“Okay. Okay.” Riley giggles. “I’m going.”
“See you in an hour?” Lucas says with a grin.
Riley risks being reprimanded by giving Lucas a quick kiss. “See you in an hour.”

AU College Fic. Farkle never figured out how Riley really felt about Lucas, so it never got out. Now she’s turning 21 and the gang decides to go to Las Vegas to celebrate. Sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.
Rating: M (because of language, situations, and it’s Vegas, soooo yeah)
Pairing: Rucas

                                           Chapter Three: Treys
“Farkle Minkus,” Riley’s mouth fell open the moment the manager of the hotel opened the double doors to the penthouse suite of the Hard Rock Hotel.  Her eyes widened as she surveyed the expansive living room of the 4,200 sq ft suite.  “This can’t possibly be right.”
“It is,” he smiled as he turned to the manager. “My father also said something about a butler?”
“We get a butler,” Maya hissed at Riley.  She knew that Farkle’s parents wanted to pay for their room, but she had no idea that they paid for them to stay in heaven for the next few days.  How was she ever going to go back to her cramped dorm room after this?
“This is unreal,” Zay marveled as he walked around the main living room.  Couches, TVs, and various pieces of artwork were everywhere.  As he wandered toward the corner of the room, he noticed a neon light in his peripheral vision.  He slowly turned toward it.  When he did, his eyes widened.  “Oh shit,” he chuckled.
“What is it,” Lucas asked as he and the girls followed the sound of his voice.
The four of them stood shoulder to shoulder as they gawked at the one lane bowling alley in the middle of the suite.
“This is it, guys,” Zay grinned as they stared at the structure.  “It will never get better than this exact moment.”
Riley glanced at Lucas, but quickly turned her head when she noticed his eyes move over to her.
Maya examined the bowling lane for a moment before she shrugged.  “How much do you want to bet that it actually does get better than a bowling alley in the living room?” Maya quickly reached for her best friend’s hand.  “Let’s see the rest of our home for the next four days,” she squealed.
Farkle wandered over to the group as they continued to take in their surroundings.  “There are three bedrooms, a couple of different sitting areas, a bowling alley, a pool table…there is a hot tub in there,” he gestured to the back of the suite, “And we have a butler on call 24/7 for whatever we might need.”  He tried to think if there was anything else.  “Oh, and a fully stocked bar over there,” he gestured to the other end of the bowling alley.
“I’m never leaving this room,” Zay told the group.  “You guys can go and explore Las Vegas all you want to, but I already know that nothing could be better than this.”
Riley’s wide eyes turned to Farkle.  The room was nicer than anywhere she had ever been in her life, but she couldn’t help but to wonder how much this was going to cost.  “Are you sure about this?  It must cost—“
“It’s fine,” he assured her.  “Mom and dad insisted.  They knew we were waiting to properly celebrate until we all turned 21.  They didn’t want us to worry about anything while we were here.”
“Is it too late for them to adopt me?”  Maya strolled over to the pool table.  “I seriously don’t want to leave the room now.”
Riley put her arm around Farkle’s shoulders as she gave him a warm smile.  “Thank you, Farkle.  It’s already so much more than I ever thought it would be.”  She brought her other arm around to hug him from the side.  It was truly incredible.  When she pulled away from him, she glanced around the living room once more.  They had only just arrived, but she had a feeling that it was going to be their biggest adventure yet.
“Then why don’t we just stay here tonight,” Zay finally yelled overtop of everyone as they debated on what to do that evening.  He raised his hands as he gestured at the space around them.  “I mean, we already have the best room in town.  We just got here, and I’m sure we’re all a little jet lagged, right?”  When Farkle and Riley nodded, he continued.  “So, let’s go grab some food, come back here…maybe bowl a little, play some pool, hop in that Jacuzzi…” he paused.  “Staying in tonight makes sense to me.  Riley doesn’t turn twenty-one until tomorrow night at midnight, so if we’re going to chill out one night, it needs to be this one.”
“He makes a good point,” Farkle agreed before he turned to the girls.  “What do you think?”
Maya glanced at Riley.  It wouldn’t be fair to try to go out when Riley had to wait one more day.  She was itching to gamble, but she wasn’t about to do it without her best friend.  “Yeah.  I agree.  We can all relax and enjoy the room tonight.  Tomorrow, we do…whatever it is that you have already planned, but tomorrow night…we go all out.”  She wrapped her arms around Riley.  “It’s not every day your best friend turns twenty-one.”
“Awww,” Riley cooed as Maya hugged her.  She glanced at Farkle.  “So, where are we going for dinner tonight?”
“It’s a surprise,” Farkle grinned as he stood up.  “We do have a reservations somewhere, so why don’t we get dressed and meet back in here in an hour?”
“Sounds good,” Maya said as she stood up.  She reached for the brunette next to her.  “Come on, Riles.  Let’s see what we’re working with in our bathroom.”
Zay and Lucas slowly stood up as the girls walked to their room.  “I’m going to shoot some pool,” Zay told the remaining members of their party, “Because it will not take me an hour to get ready.”  He glanced at the guys.  “Anyone want to play?”
“I need something to drink,” Lucas answered for the first time in several minutes.  He was content enough to let everyone else decide what they wanted to do.   He was pretty open for anything.  Besides, his mind had been preoccupied with a few things that were definitely more important than their plans for the evening. “Farkle, can you show me the ins and outs of the bar?”  He didn’t wait for an answer as he walked toward the corner of the suite.
Farkle frowned, but followed him regardless.  Out of the entire group, Farkle would have been voted ‘least likely to be found in a bar’.  He knew very little about alcohol, but also knew that Lucas was well aware of that fact.  “Lucas, I’m not really a heavy drinker, and the bar seems pretty self-exclamatory.”
“I know,” he answered as they reached the little alcove.  As soon as Lucas walked behind the bar, he faced Farkle.  Was he actually about to do this?  Was he going to risk giving himself away?  To be frank, he didn’t really care about the repercussions.  He had to know if he had a chance.  He had to know if there was someone else.  “I needed to talk to you and…I really need a drink of something before I do.”  He was nervous.  He had never been nervous to talk to Farkle before.  The genius was one of his best friends.  They were practically brothers—which is exactly what made this conversation even more nerve-wracking.
Farkle frowned as he watched Lucas quickly pour himself a double shot of whiskey.  “Why do you need a drink to talk to me?”  His eyes widened when he watched his friend quickly down the amber liquid and pour himself a second one.  “We’ve been friends for eight years now.  What could it possibly be—“
“It’s about Riley,” he said before he slid the second one back.  He knew that the effects wouldn’t be instant, but he had to take the edge off.  It was crazy.  Ever since they got off the plane, ever since he checked his phone, a hurricane of anxiety raged within him about the brunette girl who was currently on the other side of the suite.
“Riley?”  Farkle glanced at the direction of the girls’ room.  “What about her?”
Lucas looked down at the glass in his hands.  He hadn’t told anyone about his deeply rooted feelings for the brunette.  He didn’t want any of his friends to interfere or to be forced to keep it a secret from the others.  No, it had been his burden, and his alone, to bear for the last seven years.  He thought as the years went on that his feelings for her would fade, but instead, they intensified with every interaction they had.  He thought for sure she would notice.  He thought that they all would have seen it by now, but maybe they hadn’t because they didn’t know to look for it.  “Yeah, I noticed something earlier…and wanted to ask about it.”
Farkle didn’t understand what Lucas was trying to say.  “Ask what?”
Lucas sat the glass down.  He had to spit it out.  It was like ripping off a Band-Aid.  He only hoped that what lied beneath wasn’t a deeper cut.  “Is there…something…going on with you and Riley?”
Farkle lifted his eyebrows in shock.  “What,” he nearly shrieked.  “No.  No, no, no, and no.”  He shook his head for emphasis as he leaned against the counter.  Riley was like a sister to him, nothing more.  “What makes you think that?”
Lucas looked down at the counter before he sighed.  “This is a really nice suite, Farkle.  I know you said it was for all of us to celebrate, but it is her birthday…and you’re taking her to a surprise place for dinner.”  He shrugged.  He had to downplay his line of questioning the best he could.  “I was just curious.”
“Riley is one of my best friends.”  He paused.  “So is Maya.  I’ve known them both for far too long to ever see them as anything other than a sister type.  I mean…if something was going to happen with either one of them, it definitely would have been before now, don’t you think?”
Lucas crossed his arms over his chest.  “Yeah.  Yeah, I guess so.”  ‘Nonchalant, Friar.  Nonchalant.’
Farkle watched as Lucas preoccupied himself by looking around the entire bar area.  Farkle could swear that Lucas had looked everywhere around them except for him.  “Why are you so curious about it?”
Lucas took a quick breath before he finally looked up at Farkle.  “What do you mean?”
Farkle gestured to the empty glass.  “Why did you need to take two shots before you asked me about it?”
“Oh, you know…we don’t really talk about dating stuff.  I was just curious.”  He picked up the glass and turned around to sit it in the sink.  He was grateful for the ten-second distraction.  “I didn’t know if Zay and I needed to help push you…closer to her over the next few days.”  He paused as he turned back to his friend.  Thank God he didn’t have to push his friend toward the one girl he had never been able to forget.  “You know since she’s been talking to that Steve guy.”
“Steve?”  Farkle had to think for a moment.  Steve who?  “Steve Fitzsimmons?”
Lucas shrugged.  ‘Good job on that transition,’ he mentally applauded himself.  “I saw Maya’s instagram post earlier…the one with the picture of Riley on the plane.  Asher tagged me in the comments and I noticed that a guy named Steve said something about taking Riley out for her birthday when we got back.”
“Oh.  Yeah, I think she’s gone out with him a few times over the last couple of weeks.”
Lucas knew he should drop the conversation.  Riley was free to date whoever she wanted to and Farkle didn’t seem that suspicious of his fascination with Riley’s love life.  Still though, he couldn’t help but to press the genius a little further.  “Do you think it’s serious?”
“No idea.”  Farkle chuckled.  “But it’s Riley.  She never gets serious with anyone.”  Farkle’s smile slowly faded as he studied Lucas’s pensive expression.  He was deep in thought about something, and truthfully, Farkle could have sworn that his friend seemed tense.  “You ok?”
“Yeah,” Lucas shook his head as he tried to force the brunette from his mind.  “Yeah.  Why do you ask?”
“Are you upset about the breakup with Alicia?”
“No,” he sighed.  “You know how it is with me, I guess.  Can’t ever quite reach the committal stage.”  He glanced at the clock on the far wall.  “I probably should go get ready.”
Farkle frowned as he glanced at the glass in the sink.  Something wasn’t adding up. He turned around as he watched Lucas retreat to his room.  Was Lucas asking from sheer curiosity—as a protective older brother type—or was it something more?  Was he jealous or was he merely envious because he was still dealing with his most recent breakup?  Something definitely didn’t seem right.
“Top of the World,” Riley squealed as she twirled in the middle of the suite’s living room.  Not only was she was staying in the most beautiful room in the world, but she also just had the most amazing meal ever.   “The view was so incredible,” she grinned as she turned to her friends.  There was no way anything would top the view from their table.  She felt like she was in heaven as she spent most of the night staring at the glimmering lights below them.
“It was really nice,” Maya agreed as she walked toward the whimsical brunette.  “I’m not sure how we’ll be able to top that place as far as our meals go.”
“There are so many places to eat at around here,” Zay told them as he strolled over to the bar.  “I’m sure we’ll have just as much fun tomorrow night…although, you did set the bar pretty high, Farkle.”
“So, what do you guys want to do here tonight?”  Riley glanced at the bowling alley.  “We have the pool table, the bowling alley, the hot tub.”
“Yes,” Zay exclaimed as he pulled out several bottles of liquor.  He placed them all on the counter and grinned as he looked up expectantly at his friends.
Riley chuckled.  “Yes to what?”
“All of it,” he answered decisively.  “It’s about 9:30 now, and I don’t know about you guys, but I am so not ready to go to bed.”  He looked down at the liquor sprawled on the counter.  “So, how about this?  I’ll be the bartender tonight and you guys can go get changed into your suits while I think of some games we can play.”
Farkle yawned.  “It’s 12:30 in New York.”
“But it’s 9:30 here,” Zay reasoned.  “I’m prepared to keep this party going all night.  Who’s with me?”
Riley raised her hand as she walked over to the bar.  “I’ve been looking forward to this trip for a really long time.  There is no way that I am crashing at 9:30 on the first night.”  She turned to Maya.  “What do you think?”
“I’m in,” she smiled.  She knew those few hours of sleep on the plane would come in handy.
Riley looked to the abnormally quiet Texan.  She wasn’t sure why he had been so quiet for most of the evening.  Maybe he was thinking about Alicia?  Riley assumed that he was the one to end things—he usually was—but maybe something else happened this time?  “Lucas?  What about you?”
His head snapped up at the sound of his name.  Truthfully, he hadn’t heard much of their conversation.  His thoughts had been completely focused on the girl who now looked expectantly at him.  “I’m sorry.  What?”
“Are you going to go to bed or are you going to stay up with us and enjoy everything this room has to offer?”
Maybe he should go to bed.  Maybe he should regroup and start fresh in the morning.  He knew that if he mixed alcohol with being in such close proximity to her, that something might slip out.  He had done a fairly good job at hiding his feelings from her for the last few years.  Was he finally breaking down?  Did his heart have an eight-year cap on repressing his true feelings?  He wasn’t sure, but he wasn’t about to retreat to his room only to find out something insane happened that he could have prevented if only he had been there.  “Yeah.  Yeah, I’m in.”
“Great,” she smiled.
“You guys have fun,” Farkle yawned once more.  He was excited to be in Las Vegas, but he had also been up since 5:30.  He knew if he had just one drink he would pass out.  “I have got to get some sleep.  We have a packed day tomorrow.  Our wake up call is at 7am.”
Maya flinched.  “I haven’t seen 7am since high school, Farkle!  I thought this was a nocturnal town?”
“It is.  We’re going to the Hoover Dam in the morning and it’s going to take about an hour to get there.  If you combine that with how long it’ll take everyone to get ready and eat, and well…7am wake up call.”
Maya pouted.  “Really?”  Did they have to go to the damn Dam that early?
He nodded.  “Afraid so.”
“I’m still staying up,” Riley declared as she pulled out one of the chairs in front of the bar and sat down.  She slapped her hand on the counter.  “Bartender, make me a margarita.”
“Sure…after I see some ID.”  When Riley raised her eyebrows in response, Zay laughed.  “You know I’m just kidding.”  He waited a beat.  “I can only make this joke for one more day!”
“I’m staying up too,” Lucas told the group as he loosened his tie.  “Zay, can you make me a jack and coke?  I’m going to go change.”  Maybe this was a bad idea.  Maybe something would slip out during whatever drinking game Zay would concoct, but truthfully, he wasn’t sure how much longer he could keep everything bottled up.  He was tired of being tense around her.  He was tired of having to be mindful of every look, every word he directed at her.  He wanted to relax.  He wanted to be himself around her again.
“Well, if you guys are staying up, so am I,” Maya said as she slipped her shoes off.  “Zay, vodka and redbull.  I’m going to need some energy.”
“You guys have fun.  I’m exhausted and jet lagged.”
“Goodnight,” Riley called out to Farkle as he headed off to his room.  Once she heard his door shut, she turned back to Zay.  “I can’t get over this suite,” Riley told him as she glanced around the room.  “I could spend the next four days in here and be perfectly happy.”
“That’s what I’ve been saying!”  He pulled out a few glasses from the cabinet and sat them in front of the brunette.  “I know one thing…I’m going to take advantage of that 24/7 room service.”
Riley placed her head in her hand as she rested her elbow on the counter.  “We just got back from dinner.”
“Not right now…but if we’re going to stay up late…and especially after getting a few drinks in?  You’re going to be begging for some pizza.”
She smiled as her eyes drifted toward the wall.  “Too true.”
As Zay filled the glasses with some ice, he glanced at his friend.  He couldn’t help but to notice that she seemed to be in a daze as she stared at the back wall.  “So, how’s life Riley?”
The right corner of her lips turned up into a smirk as she looked back at Zay.  “Life is…life.”
He nodded.  “Have you been seeing anyone new lately?”
She raised her eyebrows.  That was a pretty loaded question, and honestly one that didn’t have a short answer.  Was she dating around?  Yes.  Was she serious about any of them? No.  Not yet, anyway.  “I don’t know…you interested,” she teased.
He chuckled.  “Sorry, girl.  I’ve known you for too long to ever risk losing your friendship.”
She drummed her fingers on the counter as she sat up.  “No worries.  You’re one of my best friends.  It would be too weird, I think.”
“Yeah,” he agreed as he poured Lucas’s drink.  “I feel like it would be with all of us though.  We’ve all been so close for so long…why rock the boat now, you know?”
Riley’s lips formed a thin line as she stared at the counter.  She knew it would be weird, and awkward, and the odds of it ending well were practically nonexistent, but that didn’t stop her from thinking about Lucas in that way.  It didn’t stop her from constantly daydreaming about where a relationship with him could go.  It didn’t stop her from falling more in love with him with every passing day.  “Yeah.”
“How are those drinks coming,” Lucas asked as he strolled out of the room he was to share with Zay.
Riley turned around to look at him as he walked toward the bar.  He had changed into a pair of swimming trunks and a white t-shirt.  Even dressed down, he looked positively god-like.
“Perfect timing.  Yours is ready, my friend,” Zay told his best friend as he handed him the drink.
Lucas took a small sip.  “This is strong,” he commented before he took a longer swig.  Strong was good.  Strong was the quickest way he would be able to relax around Riley and quiet the voices in his head that screamed at him to tell her how he felt.
“Doesn’t seem to be stopping you any,” Zay responded as he poured Riley’s tequila into a glass.
“We’re here to have fun, right?”  Lucas glanced at Riley.  He was surprised that she hadn’t gone to change her clothes yet.  “Are you going to go change?”
“Yeah.  Absolutely.  I was just trying to butter up the bartender here so he would give me a good pour.”  She slid out of the chair as she turned her head toward the back of the living room.  “I’m dying to see the view of the strip from that hot tub.”
Lucas swallowed harshly as the mental image of Riley clad in a bikini flashed through his mind.  He looked down at the drink in his hand before he quickly downed the rest of it.  He had never been a really heavy drinker, but considering the amount he had already consumed since they arrived, he had a feeling that this weekend would be an exception.
“Here, take this with you,” Zay instructed as he handed Riley her margarita.
She took a sip of it.  “Whew.  Definitely strong, Zay.”
“We’re going to do Vegas right,” Zay grinned as he popped open a can of Red Bull for Maya.
“I have a feeling that Farkle’s going to have a very hard time getting us up in the morning,” she told the guys before she wandered to her room to change her clothes.
As soon as Riley closed her bedroom door, Zay reached for Lucas’s empty glass.  “What’s going on with you, man?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I know you have a high tolerance for alcohol, but I also know that you’ve never been a big drinker.”  He reached for the bottle of whiskey.  “I’ve seen you drink more already tonight than in the last two months.  What’s going on?”
Lucas shrugged.  “Nothing.  You just said you wanted us to ‘do Vegas right’.  I do too.  I want to have fun.”

Concept: New kid who works on the school newspaper writes an article on how Rilaya are the Highschool Sweethearts Couple™ of Abigail Adams which Riley & Maya DENY ALL OF IT. However, Farkle, Zay, and Smackle are just pulling out all of those receipts (pointing out the obvious public displays of affection, nicknames, the lip bites, the heart eyes, the flirting, them being whipped for one another) whilst playing matchmakers.
Ft. Carrie Abelson’s only dialogue, “I was hardcore third wheeling every time they invited me over to the Gay Window unlike Lucas I knew they were perfect for each other and didn’t get myself into a triangle instead I moved across the street, remaining long forgotten. They need to quit telling people I'm dead."

i meant girl meets sweet sixteen sorry! :)
oh alright! under a read more in case someone hasn’t seen it yet
basically riley wanted to celebrate something so badly so she decided to have her sweet sixteen, she mentioned it in class and obviously cory made it a lesson and had them think about how their lives will be like when they’re juniors.
they all go to topanga’s and almost every one has small moments with each other like riley and maya say that they’re forever, riley and lucas say they’re hopeful for their relationship and hold hands (!!) and lucas finally sort of comfronts smackle about how she acts when she’s around him and smackle admits she does it because she’s afraid farkle doesn’t really like her and farkle, bless him, admits he might like her more than like her (!!!!!!!). and there are some really cute zaydora moments that you have to see for yourself, honestly.
the next day they all tell cory how they think life is gonna be when they’re juniors (ft cute lucaya, smarkle and zucas moments) and at the end of the episode topanga drops the london bomb and everyone cries.

Chapter Three: Excuses
Word Count: 2136
↠ ♥ ↞
After lying to Lucas about the extent of her feelings towards him Riley feels she has no choice but to tell Maya the same thing. Riley thinks it’s better to hear it from her rather than Lucas, especially after the two girls agreed to no longer keep secrets from one another. A pact that makes Riley feels horrible for lying to Maya but she keeps telling herself that this is the best thing for everyone. Her guilt subsides slightly when Maya looks relieved after Riley explains that she isn’t romantically interested in Lucas.
As the weeks pass things remain awkward. Even though no one is asking Riley if she’s okay anymore they certainly still have a watchful eye on her in all situations. Still, Riley wears a smile that doesn’t waver as she tries to navigate through every tense situation.
As for Maya and Lucas, on the outside you probably wouldn't even be able to tell they were dating. They almost never held hands or made contact of any sort. Riley was unsure if they acted like this because of her or for other reasons.
Not surprisingly at all Maya prioritises Riley over Lucas in ever situation, even when ‘choosing’ isn’t necessary. Riley wonders if Maya does this out of guilt or obligation but she shakes the thought every time, Maya was her best friend and she does things because they love each other. Even though Riley tries to primarily focus on Maya she can’t help but notice the slight wave of disappointment that seems to cross Lucas every time he’s passed over for Riley. At least she thinks it’s disappointment.
Riley wonders how she would have handled the situation had she of been the girl chosen. How would she balance Maya and Lucas? A thought she abandons quite quickly as it triggers enormous amounts of guilt and heartache.
Every time Riley finds herself trying to analyse situations involving feelings that weren't her own she makes a conscious effort to stop as she promised herself that she would stop trying to guess how everyone feels and only worry about her own emotions. A good idea in theory but her plan fails as Riley only ever tries to do what makes other people happy.
Riley would never dream of abandoning Maya over a boy so she remains the perfect best friend; all through Shawn and Katy’s wedding, through debates about good and evil, through the loss of her childhood bear, through culture fairs and girls not liking her at school, through series finales of a beloved television show and auditions for a movie based on their lives.
(interrupting this story to say these are obvi episodes that aired in season 3 but they wouldn't have happened how you remember them. I’m not going to write 100 chapters on altered episodes but they would have been similar but with a lot more fake smiley Riley ft. awkward Lucas and Maya like their smoothing pouring over the head date)
It was exhausting, all the pretending. Riley truly believed that all her smiley efforts would eventually lead to an actual resolution of her feelings. She believed that things would settle and she’d have a strong and healthy relationship with both Maya and Lucas, all platonic. All a bloody joke because after months of faking it she feels no closer to genuine happiness, all Riley feels is emotional drained. The brunette finds it harder and harder to keep up with the act as the days go by.
In addition to the emotional exhausting Riley is physically exhausting herself as a result of throwing herself into her school work, shifts at the bakery and she even offers up her time to babysit Auggie more so her parents can restart their date night that they’ve struggled to find time for. These are all things that Riley had perfect excuses for wanting to do, like wanting to maintain a good permanent record after that failed Spanish test and wanting to save money for a European trip once she graduates, etc. but really these were all just excuses for Riley to occupy her time away from the group.
She didn’t just flat out stop hanging out with her friends, that’s not what she wanted because as much as it hurt to be with them Riley feels as thought not being with them was worse. So this was a way for Riley to have the best of both worlds. Instead of sitting at the bakery for a study session and having to engage in conversations she could look on at said conversations whilst occupying herself with waiting tables.
The more Riley made herself available to her parents the more they started utilising her. It’s these things that help Riley be out of the group but with everyone still feeling like she’s in the group. Riley’s smart like that without even knowing how well orchestrated she makes things. Slowly weaning herself off group sessions all the while maintaining her smiley image so no big questions are raised.
It’s at Christmas time that Riley realises Lucas is the main trigger for her. Just one on one with Maya, Riley found herself forgetting. Forgetting that Maya was in a relationship with a boy she may love. It’s whenever Lucas is brought up in conversation that Riley feels her heart sink. Christmas time confirms this in Riley’s mind when she felt relieved that Lucas went back to Texas. Even if it was only for a week Riley felt like she could breathe again but then he mails her such a sweet Secret Santa and she finds herself quickly slipping into a saddened state. After convincing Maya to spend Christmas at home with her new stepfather Riley takes a moment to herself. It’s in the early hours of the AM - after a restless sleep - that Riley comes up with a plan. Another attempt at catching her breath.
At a reasonable hour on Christmas morning Riley approaches her parents after the gift exchange. She explains the proposal to them as more of selfless act rather than the escape she hoped it would be. Riley was scarily good at hiding her feelings from her parents so when she spun this elaborate plan to give the new Hunter family some time to bond by going to Pittsburgh for the remainder of the winter break Cory and Topanga ate up every word.
The following day the Matthews head off to Alan’s and Amy’s where they spend a relaxing New Years at the home that Cory grew up in.
The trip was indeed therapeutic for Riley. Giving the teen a chance to gather her thoughts. It’s in this time that she makes a promise to herself to really get over Lucas once she returns to school.
A plan that lasted all of three seconds as Riley accidentally witnessed Lucas and Maya share an awkward kiss by the hole at school. She backs away before either of them saw her but she’s barely able to contain her emotions as she scurries away. Seeing them together hurt but seeing them kiss? That was too real for Riley to ignore.
The brunette pushes her palms against an exit door and stumbles into the fresh air of an outdoor court yard at the side of the school. Riley’s sudden bust through the door startled the only other person out there and he drops a lighter in his hand.
“I’m sorry,” Riley wipes at her cheeks in a desperate attempt to conceal her sadness. “I thought no one would be out here.”
“Me too,” the boy laughs nervously as he reaches for the dropped lighter and rambles an explanation, “I don’t normally do this- This isn’t me,” he waves the cigarette about.
“And this isn’t me,” Riley gives him a sad shrug, “Yet here we are.” With that she tries to make a break for the door but he stops her.
“Wait..” He calls out.
Riley turns to him, “Don’t worry I won’t tell anyone what I saw.”
“I don’t really care about that,” He shakes his head, “I just wanted to ask if you were okay?” There it is, the question that’s been aggravating Riley for months expect now she doesn’t lash out at the stranger or even pretend to smile instead she does her best to suck back the tears and gives the boy a quiet but honest, “Not yet.”
Riley tries to remove herself from the scenario but again the boy stops her.
“Wait, please?” He softens.
Riley wipes at her eyes again and turns around to find the boy fiddling in his backpack. He takes out a packet of tissues and with a cautious smile he hands them to her.
“Thank you,” Riley uses a tissue to dry her eyes and wipe any makeup that may of smudged. Riley takes a moment to look at the stranger. He’s only a little taller than her with a boyish frame but not too lanky. He’s got dark hair and eyes to match that sit behind wide brimmed black glasses. He’s undoubtedly attractive but in a soft and pure kind of way.
“I’m Kai by the way,” he gives her a small smile as he holds out a hand for her to shake.
Riley doesn’t know why, maybe it’s her haywire emotions but she laughs at the gesture. Still she shakes his hand, “I’m Riley.”
“I know.” He admits, “Everyone kinda does...”
“Right..” Riley deflates again.
“If you want to talk about it, or anything...” Kai gives her a sympathetic smile, “I’m happy to lend an ear.”
“Thanks you.”
The morning bell rings and Riley uses this as an excuse to exit. As she scurries inside Riley, bumps into Lucas and Maya on her way to home room. Riley is thankful that neither of them noticed that only minutes beforehand she was crying. Instead the short girl leaps at her best friend the moment she spots her. Cooing about how she’s missed her since Christmas and is so excited to have her back in New York.
Lucas stands back and gives Riley a sheepish “hello”.  Riley thanks him again for her lovely Secret Santa gift and asks him lightly how Texas was. Lucas excitedly starts to ramble on about something that happened during his trip before Maya hurries Huckleberry along so they’re not late for homeroom.
That afternoon when the final bell rings Riley finds Maya, Lucas and Farkle huddled together near her locker. Having no other choice she approaches them.
“Hello,” Riley says with a goofy chuckle. “Am I being voted off the island?”
“What?” Farkle crinkles his brows.
“Nothing,” Riley shakes her head. “I just watched a couple survivor reruns on my winter break...”
“We were just talking about going to see a movie,” Lucas says with a smile.
“Tonight?” Riley raises a brow. “It’s our first day back...”
“Yeah but we didn’t get a chance to hang out over the break,” Maya frowns.
“Oh, uh,” Riley fumbles over her words.
“Ri,” a newly familiar voice creeps up behind her. Riley turns Kai who’s approaching with his backpack slung over one shoulder. “You ready?” he asks.
Maya turns to Lucas and mouths “Ri?” to which he shrugs just as confused as her.
“Yeah,” Riley nods unsure what was going on. She turns back to her friends, “You know Kai? He’s in our year.”
Everyone mumbles hellos even though they didn’t really know him.
“Kai and I had plans this afternoon,” Riley lies.
“Like a date?” Maya slips out without really think.
“She’s real pretty and all but definitely not my type.” Kai chokes on his laughter. “We are going to work on her audition for the school play.”
“My what?” Riley squeaks.
“Don’t be shy,” he playfully shoves Riley’s arm.
“The school play?” Maya pricks up a brow. “I didn’t know you wanted to be in the play...”
“Last minute decision,” Riley shrugs one shoulder nonchalantly, “I just didn’t get the chance to tell you yet.”
“Oh, okay,” Maya nods.
“Come, come,” Kai tugs at her arm. “The theatre waits for no one.”
Riley gives her friends a small wave as she allows herself to be dragged away.
“What was all that?” Riley whispers as they continue to walk away together.
“That was me helping you get out of whatever it is you wanted to get out of,” Kai shrugs casually.
“How do you know I wanted to get out of anything?” Riley frowns.
“I have a feeling we didn’t meet this morning by accident,” Kai gives her a starry eyed look and a slight smirk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Riley raises a brow.
“Well I was three seconds away from poisoning my lungs before you burst through those doors,” he scrunches up his face in disgust. “You stopped me from making a mistake. You helped me.”
“And you were there to dry my tears?” Riley lets out an unconvincing laugh.
“Exactly.” Kai nods. “I believe this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
Riley was unsure about this but something about a friend that had nothing to do with her current situation seemed so inviting to Riley. So inviting that she finds herself smiling for real.
