Lyrics:
Well, rock the cradle of love
Rock the cradle of love
Yes, the cradle of love don't rock easily, it's true
Well, rock the cradle of love
I rocked the cradle of love
Yes, the cradle of love don't rock easily, it's true
Well now
It burned like a ball on fire
When the rebel took a little child bride
To tease yeah, so go easy, yeah, ow!
'Cause love cuts a million ways
Shakes the devil when he misbehaves
I ain't nobody's fool
Come on, shake it up
Whatever I do, rock!
Rock the cradle of love (woo!)
Rock the cradle of love
Yes, the cradle of love don't rock easily, it's true, ooh yeah
Sent from Heaven above, that's right
To rock the cradle of love
Yes the pages of love don't talk decently, it's true
Yeah, flesh for your Romeo
Ah yeah, baby
I hear you moan
It's easy, y'know how to please me, yeah (ow!)
'Cause love starts my rollin' train
You can't stop it
It ain't in vain
I ain't nobody's fool
Come on, shake it up
Whatever I do
Ha, ow, whoo!
These are the wages of love, of love
Rock the cradle of love (of love, of love)
These are the wages of love
Hm, yeah
Rock the cradle
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, ow!
Shake it, baby!
Ain't it little man!
Well it burned like a ball on fire
When the rebel took a little child bride
To tease yeah, good to know how to please you, yeah, ow!
Well my love starts a rollin' train
You can't stop it
It ain't in vain
I ain't nobody's fool
Come on, shake it up
Whatever I do, ow-ow-ow!
Rock the cradle of love, yeah
Rock the cradle of love, ooh
Sent from Heaven above
That's right
To rock the cradle of love, ow!
Rock the cradle of love
Yeah, cradle of love
That's me mama
I robbed the devil of love, alright
Cradle of love, ow!
Songwriter:
If you tease me, tonight (rock the cradle of love)
Might just sleaze me, all right (cradle of love)
If you appeaze me tonight (rock the cradle of love)
And let me ease you (cradle of love) yeah!
Rock the cradle of love, yeah cradle of love, alright
Rock the cradle of love and soul, cradle of love, yeah, ow!
Billy Idol / David Werner
SongFacts:
"Cradle of Love" is a rock song written by Billy Idol and David Werner for Idol's 1990 fourth studio album 'Charmed Life'. The song is the album's sixth track and was released as its first single. "Cradle of Love" became Idol's last top-10 hit in the United States, where it reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also Idol's first and only No. 1 hit on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. On the UK Single Chart, it stalled at No. 34.
"Cradle of Love" is a rock song composed in common time and in the key of B♭ major. The song title is supposedly based on the saying "robbing the cradle". However, this title appears to have been inspired directly from the John Lennon penned song, "Cookin' (In the Kitchen of Love)" which he performed piano and sung back up vocals with his former Beatles band mate, Ringo Starr on Ringo's album Ringo's Rotogravure. So it's extremely likely, and highly possible that Billy Idol's "Rockin' the Cradle of Love" was actually inspired by the Ringo Starr song, "Cookin' (In the Kitchen of Love).
The video, directed by David Fincher, features footage of Idol singing in large painting frames throughout an apartment. The director made the decision to film Idol from the waist up as he was unable to walk due to injuries from a February 1990 motorcycle crash. The video also features Betsy Lynn George as Devin, a teenager who tries to seduce a modest and mild-mannered businessman (played by Joshua Townshend-Zellner). The film makes use of clips from The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, but as Andrew Dice Clay (who played Fairlane) had been banned from MTV, he is not shown in any of the clips. The video was a huge hit and was placed in heavy rotation on MTV. Idol and George recreated the opening of the video for the 1991 Grammys. An alternative version of the video does not feature the movie's footage, instead depicting a man playing the guitar as heard in the track.
At the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards, the video was nominated for Best Male Video and Best Special Effects and won the award for Best Video from a Film.

"I have mad respect for athletes and have penned a few songs with more to give all the way around," says my friend, singer, and songwriter Cindy Mizelle.
Cindy Mizelle is the proud mother of three children. Her two sons are professional athletes. Devin Fuller, a wide receiver with the Atlanta Falcons, and Jordan Fuller, a safety for the Carolina Panthers, have had distinguished careers in the NFL.
Her incredible career includes Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Seeger Sessions Band, Steely Dan, Billy Ocean, Whitney Houston, Dave Matthews, Duran Duran, Freddie Jackson,  Carly Simon, Alicia Keys, and Luther Vandross.
Cindy told Rolling Stone Magazine that growing up, she knew a singing career was in her future, "I just said, "I know how to do this." I played the flute, too, and I knew scales. Everything was a musical thing for me. And once I found that power, I was like, "I'm going!"
I met Cindy on Luther Vandross's Never Let Me Go tour in 1993. Cindy toured and recorded with Luther Vandross for over twenty years. She admits working with Luther felt like family. "I loved everything about him. I could relax and be myself, and he was so supportive. When it came down to my kids, he got them their first shoes."
Between gigs with Luther Vandross and the Rolling Stones, Cindy managed to squeeze the recording of her debut album, Cindy Mizelle, on Atlantic Records. My favorite tracks include the lead single, "I've Had Enough," "Smile, and "Back To Emotions."
Through Cindy, I met the talented performer Katreese Barnes, who was the musical director for SNL and won an Emmy for 'Dick In The Box." I styled Katreese for several shoots and co-produced her show, Rocket Man, featuring the music by Elton John.
A few years later, in 1995, Cindy gave me the gift of a lifetime when she sang lead vocals on the dance song I co-wrote with Keith Haarmeyer, "That Man Of Mine." The fantastic Brenda White-King also performed backing vocals on the record.
I'll always remember the day we recorded the song in Keith's one-bedroom apartment in New York City. After Cindy looked at the lyrics sheet, she asked me if I had a specific idea of how I'd like her to sing the lyrics. Then, to my astonishment, she said the chorus line five or six different ways, varying her tone and phrasing with each variation. It was the most incredible thing I've ever witnessed. I still have goosebumps thinking about it. The power and control she has with her voice are great, too.
I'm not Cindy's only fan, either. In her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey praises Cindy Mizelle: "To me, she was one of the absolute greatest. "Cindy Mizelle was the background singer. She sang with the most gifted vocalists of all time—Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, and the Rolling Stones. She was a real singer's singer. Cindy was that girl to me. I looked up to her so much.
It was also a thrill for me to design costumes for The Lovely Ladies (Tawatha Agee, Brenda, and Cindy) when they were on tour with Dave Matthews Band. Most recently, my boyfriend Joe and I filmed Cindy for Nils Lofgren's "Ain't The Truth Enough" music video.
Music is part of her DNA. Cindy Mizelle is the cousin of the famous Mizell Brothers (they dropped the word "e" out of their name), who wrote songs for the Jackson 5 and A Taste of Honey. She's also the cousin of the Ronettes. She told Rolling Stone magazine, "I looked them up and was like, "Oh, my gosh!" That was my motivation there. I'd play their records and figure out what they did. I started singing in the basement and in bands after that."
She mentions how Ronnie Spector always supported her in her career. It's a pleasure to spotlight this remarkable woman whose heart is as big and beautiful as her voice.

Los mejores albums y EPs de 2023 ( I ).
Tumblr media
Quite a year.
2. Kali Uchis - Red Moon In Venus
Tumblr media
5. Big Sad 1900 - The Reason
Tumblr media
In My Head', 'Cheat', 'Terms & Conditions'....muchas cosas bien hechas aquí, fino.
8. Wiki & Tony Seltzer - 14K Figaro
Tumblr media
11. YL - Don't Feed The Pigeons
Tumblr media
14. JPEGMAFIA & Danny Brown - Scaring The Hoes Vol.1
Tumblr media
Namedropea Jannero Pargo for the deep NBA fan.
15. billy woods & Kenny Segal - Maps
Tumblr media
16. Navy Blue - Ways Of Knowing
Tumblr media
"Going through the motions, All my songs are soul sent, You would blame the culprit, I confide in close friends"
17. Kenyon Dixon - The R&B You Love
Tumblr media
19. Liv.E - Girl In The Half Pearl
Tumblr media
To the fall but not forgotten...

What Skills Do Actors Need For Audio Fiction?
Quick. Name some of the greatest actors of all time. Olivier. Garbo. Streep. Nicholson. Those GOAT actors are movie actors. How about the best actors in audio fiction. You know, podcasts?
Let me toss out a name for you. Tal Minear. Tal is an Southern California-based actor, sound designer, and producer. They’re the creator of Sidequesting, What Will Be Here?, Someone Dies In This Elevator, and several other productions, and Tal can be heard in audio fiction shows such as Tales of the Echowood, Circles, Deconstructive Criticism, and more. They do sound design for Seen and Not Heard, Surreal Love, Wizard Seeking Wizard, and their own podcasts. They also write about audio drama production on Medium, The Simplecast Blog, and Discover Pods.
Tumblr media
Podplane is a monthly newsletter from Tal Minear spotlighting podcasts by trans, nonbinary, and non-cis creators.
Tal has been called “a creative force to be reckoned with” and “one of the best sound designers currently creating.
Audio fiction is becoming big business. It’s attracting name actors who several years ago would have replied when asked to do a fiction podcast, “OMG! Is my career that bad? Doing a podcast is even lower than doing a car commercial!”
Now, not so much. Actors of note and talent — sometimes mutual exclusive categories) are leaping into audio fiction. These actors are not thespians who are desperate for work. No, these actors are well-known in the acting community.
Here’s a brief list of well-known actors now acting in audio fiction podcasts: Anthony Anderson (Black-ish, Law & Order), Alan Cumming (Instinct), Betty Gilpin (Glow), Helen Hunt (Mad About You), Justin Min (Crazy Rich Asians), Will Sasso (Mad TV), and Billy Zane (Titanic).
The questions driving this article are straightforward. Do actors in an audio fiction podcast need specific skills that they may not have learned or encountered during their non-podcast acting careers?
What specific skills does it take to succeed on audio fiction podcasts?
“It takes, like with most things, a lot of patience,” begins Tal. “Auditioning is really the job. Beyond that, I think being able to portray emotion with your voice and finding different ways to read the same lines will really help you go far! If you have the option to send multiple takes for an audition, do a read for the second one that is different, weird, or simply out there. Variety flourishes in audio fiction!”
A Sheperd to her flock
In 2019, a scripted sci-fi podcast, Cryptids, was released to strong reviews and healthy audience numbers. The podcast was developed by Wild Obscura Films (WOF) and produced and directed by Devin Sheperd and written and created by Alex Thompson.
WOF’s 2021 feature film, A Nightmare Wakes, a psychological thriller about Mary Shelley and Frankenstein, was a selected participant in IFP’s Narrative Film Lab.
“The audio medium allows the imagination to take over in ways that no visual medium can, so there was a lot of fun and tension to be mined in letting the listener fill in some of the blanks for themselves,” says Thompson, who was interviewed during the podcast’s initial release.
The podcast director, Devin Sheperd, knew it would be a challenge.
“As a director, it was definitely different,” Sheperd says. “A lot of the actors haven’t worked in the audio space before. Our actors are based in theatre so with a podcast these actors are now working in an enclosed visual space.”
Alex Thompson also acted in the Cryptids podcast, and he notes, “As an actor, I’ve done some voice-over work so I’m comfortable with the mic in front of me. The continuing challenge was to make sure that the acting came through in my voice. So in the visual medium, I can use acting mannerisms and physicality to get into the role but in the podcast that had to be channeled into my vocal chords. Even then, is the story you’re telling in the room the story the audience is hearing on the tape? It was more akin to a theatrical performance than film acting.”
As the director of a podcast, Sheperd found that she would have to turn away from her actors while they were performing to ensure that her eyes weren’t influencing what she was hearing.
“Often, I would listen to the actors with my headphones on, looking away,” continues Devin. “In the audition process, we found that the actors we loved in the audition room while watching them, we didn’t love as much when we listened to just their voice later on. Their physical performance would give us a totally different read than the audio performance. That was hard to adjust.”
Becoming an audio fiction actor
When asked, “What’s the hardest part of having to act via only your voice?” Tal Minear smiles and repsonds, “ This is going to be silly, but my answer is hitting the mic! When I act, I gesture a lot. I record standing up, and you can find me jumping, leaning, waving my hands around, you name it. Your voice changes with position and movement, and I take advantage of that a lot. The only problem is… my mic gets in the way sometimes. The worst thing is ruining a great take with a THUD.”
Tal got into audio fiction acting by first becoming an audio fiction producer.
“Which is a weird way to go about it, I admit,” begins Tal. “ I started making audio fiction, and acting in it primarily because I didn’t know how to cast voice actors at that point. It was simply the easiest thing to do, performing the words that I wrote. But in doing that I sort of fell in love with acting for audio fiction, and began auditioning for other shows. And now I’ve been in over 50 and counting!”
Tal recounts this story about audio fiction acting: “One time I was recording for a multi-hour at-home session (we were knocking out the entire show over the course of a weekend), and it was then that I learned the true cost of recording while standing up — it gets really hard on hour four! Anyway, now I bring a chair into the booth for things like that. Sometimes you learn the hard way!”
Acting doesn’t stay in Vegas
At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) students and faculty have taken the college podcast concept to a new level of theatrical drama, creating a witches’ brew of ever-shifting realities, art converging with illusion and sonic wizardry.
In June 2020, the UNLV podcast, called POD 115: Kessel Run, was released to superb reviews and impressive download numbers. The audio fiction podcast’s tagline was “Where science fiction meets real science.”
The podcast was written by Rae Binstock — a playwright and NYC-based TV write and UNLV Adjunct Professor Adam Paul.
Adam Paul is an actor, writer and director best known for playing Mitch, ‘The Naked Man’ on the CBS hit How I Met Your Mother. He is also the creator and star of the Starz original series Hollywood Residential, and has appeared in the films The Informant, One for the Money and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.
Paul, with his years of experience in acting observes: “As a professor of acting at UNLV, where I’m also teaching actors voice over skills and content creation and self-production skills in the podcast arena, the fundamentals are always essential. Any character an actor is playing, regardless of medium, is still a human character in a story.”
“So, the rules of conflict, change, action, verbs, relationships, objectives, obstacles, tactics — all must be readily available to the actor at all times,” says Paul. “As an actor with a long career in voice over, I’ve learned that with ‘audio-first’ productions, the advantage any actor has is their imagination. Being able to visualize and physicalize the action of an audio script with your voice is the key to bringing the material to life. Scripts will seem to be just a little expository or narration-heavy as dialogue aids the visual creation of the action of the story, and an actor needs to be able to justify that exposition.”
Paul further explians that there are subtle, quick shifts an actor needs to make in audiobook narration — from narrator to character to another character, or several other characters, in conversation with one another in real time while recording. That skill takes some time for most actors to master, but the opportunity to play all the parts is delicious for most actors.
Paul continues: “The overlap for all of these media is that the collaborators on these projects have to consider the listener in a way visual stories do not. We have heavier lifting as we ensure the audience knows who’s talking and can track the story. It’s one of the fascinating ironies of ‘audio-first’ media that it’s extraordinarily visual.”
Currently, Paul is producing season three of POD115, and it is on track for a Halloween release. Paul is proud of being a Webby Award Honoree for the second season of POD115. You can check out the podcast at POD115.com.
Paul has also been producing and co-hosting a movie review podcast with a close friend and his stepson, debating the merits of current and past favorite films. several other podcast projects. The podcast is called, Les Idiots du Cinema.
“We consider ourselves “idiots” because we’ve always followed legendary screenwriter William Goldman’s maxim ‘Nobody knows anything,’” says Paul.
Becoming an audio fiction actor
When asked, “What’s the biggest mistake experienced actors make when entering this audio fiction space?” Tal responds this way: “I think the biggest mistake actors make when entering the space is assuming it’s the same as theater, film, or TV acting. I’ve found that with most audio fiction, grounded, realistic, and intimate acting really thrives.
“There are exceptions of course, especially in comedy or children’s media — this is just a general observation! I’d recommend that folks who want to enter the audio fiction space start by listening to audio fiction shows and see for themselves how it compares to the medium they’re experienced in.”
If you listen to Tal, Devin Sheperd and Adam Paul and other successful audio fiction producers / actors, you will quickly realize that the craft is more than simply voice-over. Audio fiction acting is tasked with creating images in the listener’s mind, as opposed to creating it on a screen and presenting it directly. That task is delicate and subtle, but allows for much deeper engagement of an audience when done right.

Villains: Billy Boy (1.13, LWT, 1972)
"Your father talked about you occasionally. I had the feeling he would like to have seen you."
"He did. I was handcuffed to a screw at the time. Can you imagine? Being led through a ward of geriatrics? Christ, how they stared. Even those on their last legs, eyes like organ stops. Hardly recognised him at first. 'Hello, Dad', I said, 'It's Billy Boy'. He stared straight through me. 'Who?', he said, 'I don't know any Billy Boy'."
"You broke his heart."
"Had to keep telling myself that that was my father lying there, could have been any old man. I remember, he had some grapes alongside the bed, I picked one off and ate it - that's when the screw turned on me. 'Don't you touch those', he said, 'They belong to your father, I didn't bring you here to stuff yourself'. Oh, that really got through to the old man. He thought that very amusing: laughed like a drain. Even while he's laughing, he starts to choke, he coughs up blood and all sorts. Anyway, that's... that's when a nurse rushed in, and I was dragged out and taken away. Nobody bothered to inform me when he died; was Eric worried I might have been let out for the funeral?"
#Villains#Billy Boy#classic tv#andrew brown#Robert Tronson#William Marlowe#David Daker#Alex Marshall#David Burke#Vanessa Payne#Herbert Ramskill#George Baizley#A.J. Brown#Peter Whitaker#Andy Devine#And so this brilliant‚ strange‚ completely unique series draw to its close. How like Brown to end the series in such an unexpected manner:#How like this series to open its final episode with the only major player still at large‚ William Marlowe's Bill‚ already in prison. What#Might reasonably have been expected to be a suspenseful tale of how Bill evades capture instead becomes a sharp character study explaining#Why he never could. Brown's script is one of the simpler in plot (although still featuring the multiple time lines characteristic of this#Series) but his dialogue is beautiful (not least the speech I've quoted above‚ which is much more affecting in performance)#Marlowe is incredible here; his story has in many ways been the one most central to this series and this episode perfectly strings together#The various glimpses of his life and personality that have been established so far‚ and simultaneously bringing the series to a logical#But deeply upsetting conclusion. Split between the present and prison‚ and the past and Bill's final day of freedom with his estranged#Family. These home scenes are a straight four hander which are played beautifully by all concerned (always fun to see a young David Burke#Rock up‚ even if he never did look that young) and shout out to Payne who's an excellent child actor. And then just as suddenly as it began#It's over. A mystifying‚ unpredictable‚ unique series. There are other shows that examined a single event and used individual episodes to#Study single characters (The Gold Robbers is a good example‚ and quite similar in set up) but none were so experimental and none blended#Genres and pushed the boundaries of the medium in the way this series did in some episodes (still not over some of them). At the same time#It isn't perfect‚ there are misses as well as hits‚ and for me Knocker is an awkward odd one out that fits badly with the rest of the serie#But that's old TV! It's never perfect‚ even the very best of it! And in a way it makes the rest so much better! What a series! What a world

BLOGTOBER 10/4/2020: SOCIETY
Without having a survey to back me up, I feel comfortable asserting that as a horror fan, you go through different phases with SOCIETY. It’s a basic fact of life, and yet it morphs and mutates underneath you, shocking you anew just when you think you’ve got a grip on it. You never forget your first time, because there is simply nothing like it. Then, after you get over the initial shock of its patented brand of body horror, you start to take it for granted; it's so broad and monolithic that it becomes something like the Grand Canyon--when it’s not right there in front of you, you begin to experience it more iconically, as part of the wallpaper of existence, rather than an in-your-face confrontation with the limits of experience. Then, you revisit it every few years (or months, depending on what sort of person you are), and the prophylactic layer that your brain has wrapped around your memories of it--the one that allows you to think of SOCIETY as a fun, wacky cheap thrill--begins to crumble, and you realize all over again how iconoclastically vile it is. Wherever you happen to be at, with this inimitable genre landmark, you'd be hard pressed to deny that it earns its royal status among horror movies, just for being so uniquely fucked up.
Tumblr media
Filmmaker Brian Yuzna is best known as the co-creator of the indispensable RE-ANIMATOR (or as the co-writer of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS...depending on what sort of person you are, again), itself a milestone achievement in the blending of sex and gore that so characterized '80s horror production. That film clearly brought out the best in Yuzna and frequent collaborator Stuart Gordon (also of HONEY, I SHRUNK THE KIDS fame...among other things), but it's interesting to see how they operate apart, to understand the unique ingredients that each filmmaker brought to the more perfect union of their classic Lovecraft adaptation. Gordon skewed darker and more intellectual, as evidenced by the end of his career with the shattering mob thriller KING OF THE ANTS, the disturbing true crime drama STUCK, and the Mamet-penned EDMOND. Yuzna, for his part, is almost anti-intellectual, preferring to cook up blackly comic, semi-pornographic nightmares like his two increasingly horny RE-ANIMATOR sequels, the terminal S&M fantasy RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD 3, and the shamelessly hokey comic book adaptation FAUST: LOVE OF THE DAMNED. Yuzna's lack of shame is really his defining feature as an artist, and nowhere is this more obvious than in his directorial debut and signature masterpiece, SOCIETY.
Tumblr media
Salvador Dali's "The Great Masturbator," a chief visual inspiration for SOCIETY.
Yuzna was able to leverage the success of RE-ANIMATOR to lock in two directorial opportunities, BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR, and a bizarre body horror exercise about a Beverly Hills orphan who discovers that not only are his adoptive family from a different bloodline, but they're not even from the same species. That both pictures employed the writing team of Woody Keith and Rick Fry gives you a little taste of what to expect from SOCIETY, but to be frank, the latter threatens to make the former look like a very special episode of ER; "overkill" barely begins to describe SOCIETY’s ambitious assault on the human body. In a recent interview, the philipino-american director giggles perversely, "I think my friends were a little embarrassed for me (when they saw SOCIETY)," and this sound bite reminded me that the last, most important ingredient that Yuzna contributes to any project is unabashed joy. It's a little hard to imagine stomaching SOCIETY without it.
Tumblr media
In this unusual scene from the class struggle in Beverly Hills, Billy Warlock (son of HALLOWEEN 2's Michael Myers, Dick Warlock) plays Bill Whitney, a rich, handsome, athletic high school student with a heavy duty anxiety disorder. Although he appears to have it all, he is plagued by nightmares and hallucinations, reflecting suspicions that the family that spoils him is also out to get him. Perhaps this is all understandable, though. Bill is under a lot of pressure these days, with his parents devoting all of their attention to his sister's coming out party, and his narcissistic girlfriend pushing him to ingratiate himself to the assholes higher up the social ladder; it's enough to make any teenager feel alienated and insecure. But, do these garden variety anxieties account for his visions of his sister's body deforming itself unnaturally, or the dubious evidence he finds that her debutante ball involves incestuous orgies and human sacrifice? Is Bill simply crumbling under the strain of societal expectations, or is the friction with his shrink, his parents, and his peers all symptomatic of an elaborate plot against him by elites who are truly less than human?
Tumblr media
I can’t believe they use this cheapo blanket trick MORE THAN ONCE in a movie that is famous for its unforgettable special effects, and I guess I kind of love it.
In case I haven't made the answer abundantly obvious, I'll add that while SOCIETY is the purest expression of Yuzna-ness on the market, it has an important co-author in Screaming Mad George. The eccentric japanese FX master, whose name is apparently an amalgamation of Mad Magazine, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and...George, has produced some of horror's most outrageous makeup and visual effects, mostly for Yuzna, many of them in SOCIETY. If you've seen even a trailer for Alex Winter's 1993 oddity FREAKED--which is itself a grossout criticism of American social standards--then you are already familiar with SMG's trademark style. He specializes in twisted perversions of the human form that would make a cenobite blush, driven by a penchant for puns, and influenced equally by THE THING's Rob Botin, and Big Daddy Roth’s Rat Fink style. Screaming Mad George is instrumental in articulating Yuzna's premise: that behind the shimmering veneer of success and sophistication, the upper class are just a bunch of degenerates, who literally degenerate into something unimaginable behind closed doors. It's impossible to imagine SOCIETY without his sinuous, slithering monstrosities, or his indescribable realization of their most important social event, "the shunt".
Tumblr media
One of many great images from a zine I wish I owned, on SMG’s Facebook page.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by SOCIETY's visual impact, but its message is just as potent now as it was at the end of the Reagan era: Rich people are not only different from the rest of us, but in fact, they aren't even human. Writers Keith and Fry make an interesting choice of hero to help put this across. A lazier writer would have selected any archetype from the Freaks and Geeks set to create an easy Us vs Them tension, but SOCIETY is led by a promising young man who, for reasons he himself does not yet understand, is just not "the right kind of people". Bill appears to have every advantage in life, including a level of popularity that wins him presidency of the debate team despite his nerdier rival’s superior prowess--and yet, he suffers from a stigmatizing psychiatric disorder that is the natural result of feeling indefinably different from one's peers, and intuiting that, as a consequence, they don't even really like you. The shallow jock with deep-seated emotional problems is a much more interesting protagonist for this kind of social allegory than the charismatic outcasts that you get in movies like THE FACULTY and DISTURBING BEHAVIOR, for whom the idea that the elites could be aliens is just de rigueur.
Tumblr media
It's worth noting that this complexity of character extends to Bill's love interest, sympathetic society girl Clarissa Carlyn (Playboy Playmate Devin DeVasquez). At first, she seems villainously eager to introduce Bill to the many splendors of "the shunting", but as the plot against him mounts to its horrifying conclusion, she defects. There appears to be a reason for this, although honestly, this is the most difficult part of SOCIETY for me to wrap my head around. Clarissa lives as an essentially independent adult, only burdened by her mother (Pamela Matheson), a possibly brain damaged hulk who lurks in and out of various scenes just to be disturbing, always announced by some toots on a tuba, before eventually siding with our heroes. I'm really not sure what's supposed to be going on in this part of the movie, except that this character contributes to a number of distasteful jokes. But, I hold on to the idea that by virtue of whatever disorder Mrs. Carlyn suffers from, she serves the purpose of priming Clarissa to rebel, since her very existence makes her daughter something of a societal outcast herself. That's the best I can do.
Tumblr media
In any case, everyone working on SOCIETY commits completely, with Mrs. Carlyn being no exception. The movie's climactic orgy of the damned is an all hands on deck operation, just as reliant on Screaming Mad George's artistic abilities as it is on the actors' responsibility to make you believe that this fucked up shit is really happening. There's a visceral patina of sleaze spread over the entire film, dripping from the way that characters talk to and touch each other, flirting and flaunting their bodies in a distinctly unseemly fashion, even when it stays within the realm of mundane reality. This constant sinister, insinuating attitude on the part of the whole cast lays the foundation for what is to come, and while I appreciate everybody's hard work, my favorite performance is from an actor who only comes in at the very end: David Wiley as society king Judge Carter. Wiley's career consisted almost exclusively of the most ordinary sort of television work, which makes his outrageous turn in this alien porno flick all the more respectable. While other characters transition from suspicious pod people to full-on mutated perverts, Judge Carter has to show up just for the finale, establish his authority, rip off his clothes, and plunge straight into a sea of slime, happily fisting his way through the cast. Wiley meets this challenge with aplomb, making of himself a hybrid of Robert Englund and Gene Hackman, perfectly embodying the movie's joyful absurdity, and never betraying the slightest hint of embarrassment.
Tumblr media
SOCIETY is very much a don't-look-down type of endeavor, a fairy that could expire at the slightest lapse in faith. There's a visual pun in the last act that's so gross, so offensive, so frankly idiotic, that I don't have the courage to describe it; my whole body tenses up when I know this scene is coming, as if it were the meat hook scene in TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE or the brutal rape in the middle of SHOWGIRLS. I don't like it, but at the same time, I respect Yuzna's unhesitating commitment to show it to me, and I think that actor Charles Lucia should get some kind of award for shouldering the burden so valiantly. SOCIETY is a daring movie in the truest sense, a film with more balls than brains, and in this it exposes the limitation of intelligence and taste, and the real need for pure transgression, in producing art of any real value. You might argue with me about whether Yuzna's masturbatory magnum opus really qualifies as art, but to respond to that, I'll quote the great transgressor Alejandro Jodorowsky: "If you are great, EL TOPO is a great picture. If you are limited, EL TOPO is limited." So stick that in your shunt and smoke it.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday features a star-making performance from Andra Day, complimented by a strong cast that takes on the roles of real-life figures. Based on Johann Hari's 2015 book Chasing the Scream, the 2021 Hulu movie focuses on America's War on Drugs, and how a famous blues singer became public enemy number one, at least according to the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. The United States vs. Billie Holiday was directed by American filmmaker Lee Daniels.
In The United States vs. Billie Holiday, the focal singer gains the government's attention after performing "Strange Fruit," a song about the lynching of Black Americans. Holiday refuses to remove the number from her set, which prompts Harry J. Anslinger — the commissioner for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics — to set up the singer because of her well-known heroin problem. FBI agent Jimmy Fletcher is assigned to frame Holiday, but ultimately becomes part of her inner circle, and even her lover too. The Hulu movie primarily follows the singer's life throughout the 1940s.
Related: The United States Vs. Billie Holiday Review: Andra Day Is Electric
The main cast for The United States vs. Billie Holiday on Hulu mostly portrays individuals who were close to Holiday in real life, many of whom enabled her drug addiction problem. Garrett Hedlund has a prominent role as the aforementioned Anslinger, but Day is indeed the main attraction alongside Trevante Rhodes as Fletcher. Here's a cast and character breakdown for The United States vs. Billie Holiday, including side by side images for the main historical figures.
Tumblr media
Andra Day stars as the iconic blues singer Billie Holiday. After performing "Strange Fruit," she's targeted by the U.S. government in an effort to spin the narrative from racial injustice to drug abuse. Holiday knows that the FBI doesn't have strong evidence, but also understands that they can easily sway the narrative to their advantage. Day voiced Sweet Tea in Cars 3 and appeared as Minton's Singer in Marshall. She received two Golden Globe nominations for her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
Tumblr media
Trevante Rhodes co-stars as Jimmy Fletcher, a real-life FBI agent who was responsible for Holiday's arrest, only to later develop a romantic relationship with her. A military man, Fletcher initially appears stoic while working for the government, but eventually develops a drug problem while on the road with Holiday. Rhodes headlined Barry Jenkins' 2016 film Moonlight as Black. He also appeared as Nebraska Williams in The Predator and Tom in Bird Box.
Tumblr media
Garrett Hedlund portrays Harry Anslinger, the commissioner for U.S. Treasury Department's Federal Bureau of Narcotics who believes that Holiday performs the "devil's music." Hedlund starred as Sam Flynn in TRON: Legacy and Dean Moriarty in On the Road. He also appeared as Johnny Five in Inside Llewyn Davis and Jamie McAllan in Mudbound.

Tumblr media
Natasha Lyonne appears as Tallulah Bankhead, a Hollywood actress and Holiday's red-haired girlfriend who warns the singer about looming threats. Lyonne portrayed Jessica in American Pie and starred as Nicky Nichols in Orange Is the New Black. She also headlined the Netflix show Russian Doll as Nadia Vulvokov and voiced Suzette in Big Mouth.
Tumblr media
Melvin Gregg portrays Joe Guy, a trumpet player who struggles with a drug addiction. He's also romantically involved with Holiday. Gregg appeared as Erick Scott in High Flying Bird and Marcus Parrish in The Way Back. He currently portrays Drew "Manboy" Miller in Snowfall.
Tumblr media
Tyler James Williams portrays Lester Young, a saxophonist in Holiday's band who is known as "Prez." William starred as Chris in Everybody Hates Chris and portrayed Lionel Higgins in Dear White People. He also appeared as Noah in The Walking Dead.
Tumblr media
Rob Morgan appears as Louis McKay, a businessman whose is initially described as "a boxer and a pimp." He eventually marries Holiday, abuses her, and then disappears. Morgan portrayed Turk Barrett in Daredevil, Hap Jackson in Mudbound, and Officer Powell in Stranger Things.
Related: Trevante Rhodes & Tyler James Williams Interview: United States vs. Billie Holiday
Tumblr media
Erik LaRay Harvey portrays James Monroe, Holiday's first husband who verbally abuses her while trying to please promoters. Erik LaRay Harvey appeared as Willis "Diamondback" Stryker in Luke Cage on Netflix and Del Chance in Godfather of Harlem.
Tumblr media
Tone Bell portrays John Levy, the owner of the Ebony Club who has a sexual fling with Holiday. Like many males in the film, he puts on a confident facade but displays poor judgment behind closed doors. Tone Bell portrayed Carter in Disjointed and Scott Evans in The Flash. He recently appeared as Nick in Fam.
Tumblr media
Leslie Jordan (Above) as Reginald Lord Devine: A radio show host who interviews Holiday throughout the film. He's a fictional character who asks inappropriate questions about the singer's persona life. Leslie Jordan portrayed Mr. Blackly in The Help and Beverley Leslie in Will & Grace. He currently appears as Phil in Call Me Kat.
Miss Lawrence As Miss Freddy: Holiday's stylist and a member of her inner circle. She is with the singer during the interview with Reginald Lord Devine. Miss Lawrence portrayed Miss Bruce in Star and also appeared in Empire season 2.
Related: Da'Vine Joy Randolph & Miss Lawrence Interview: United States vs. Billie Holiday
Dusan Dukic as Joe Glaser: Billie's manager at the beginning of the film. He seems to be doing his job; however, his client describes him as "crooked." Dusan Dukic portrayed a drug trafficker in The Terminal and a newscaster in Birdman.

OTHER NEWS:
·         Fall Out Boy appeared on the iconic game show The Price is Right. Only one half of the band, Patrick Stump and Pete Wentz, were present, but the pair hilariously played the game, filled in and even modeled prizes for other contestants.

BLUES GATOR ~ IN A GADA DAVIDA (Iron Butterfly) * Featuring epic drum solo by David Devine *

BLUES GATOR ~ IN A GADA DAVIDA (Iron Butterfly) * Featuring epic drum solo by David Devine *
BLUES GATOR Live ~ Featuring David Devine Playing the Best Drum Solo Ever Recorded in the History of Mankind.
I'm 67, I've heard John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, Gene Krupa, Jerry Mercer, I've seen Billy Cobham from a front row seat, and I've even enjoyed percussionist Dom Um Romao playing directly and only to me at a short distance, only inches away.
I can say without any hesitation or doubt in my mind, that this solo by David Devine of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, recorded by Denis Desmarteau of the same city, is most definitely the best drum and percussion solo that I have ever seen, and ever heard. David, I am honored to have played with you. You are an incredible master.
