Hi hi! Oh my gosh am I a huge admirer of yours! I’m an armature artist and I ~love looking at and studying all of your artwork! It’s flawless, and it looks so effortless! Your colour especially make my jaw drop, because I have no idea how you make them so vivid, so realistic, and so soft all at the same time!
If it’s alright to send you another tutorial esque ask — I’ve been wondering for a really long time about how you do clothing detailing! It looks so integrated and real; the problem that I encounter when I attempt to draw clothing detail, is that it ends up looking completely separate from the actual clothes, like I, you know, drew it on top of them. I was just wondering what your process for detailing was? Do you also have any “rules” or like general tips for how to pick the colour of detailing? Thank you so much!
Ps you’re amazing ❤️
WOW HOLY SHIT I’m so flattered by this hello?? babe what do you mean you’re studying my work i’m genuinely just an amateur artist too (and cOLOR TOO?? i’m sobbing?? plz look only at my latest arts lmaoo my older ones are over saturated messes what was going on with last year me… jesus. but it’s ok it’s okay it’s fine we’re growing we’re improving i say through gritted teeth)
i am already working on another tutorial for a couple of anons who asked me about clothing haha, i’ll try to expand a bit on how i draw patterns/details as well! as i said it might take a while lmao (insert michael from the good place saying it should take me between 7 minutes and eleven years meme .jpeg) but i’ll try my best to explain!
in the meantime i’m wishing you all the best with your art endeavors, you’re doing amazing sweetie <33

So that fic meme! Please just answer errr ALL OF THEM for In the Pocket of the Universe please. ;)
oh my goodness, i completely forgot i posted that meme! If anyone wants to ask for another fic, here's the post, and if any of you don't know this fic and would like to, you can read it here
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way? I don't know that anything inspired the form or style in particular!
2: What scene did you first put down? I always write in chronological order, so... the first one!
3: What’s your favorite line of narration? Reaching for Crowley had always been the right choice. He felt a fool to have doubted it.
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue? "And you? If we weren't what we are, would I still have you?"
5: What part was hardest to write? Crowley's anger at the end of the first chapter. I don't always find it easy to write big booming emotions, so I remember that being a bit hard to do in a way that didn't feel too cringey to me.
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics? It was only my second ever fic, and the first that wasn't pure PWP!
7: Where did the title come from? A line in the story itself.
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it? Yep, it draws on various parts of gay London history and especially on Paul Baker's research on polari.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic? Not really. Perhaps the fact I originally intended it to end at C01 and then added C02 later?
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story? Because I have Good Omens brain rot haha
11: What do you like best about this fic? I love their bus ride home in the second chapter and their quiet understanding that they're not quite clear yet... but soon...
12: What do you like least about this fic? I can't really think of anything. I don't think it's perfect, but it is quite old and I just don't read my work that critically once it's out there!
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading? Joan Armatrading's first album. It's got nothing to do with the fic, it's just a really good record.
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic? I hope some people heard about polari and perhaps went and read up a bit on this little chapter of queer British history!
15: What did you learn from writing this fic? I learnt some polari for sure xD

This is probably not very well edited since I kept getting interrupted. 😒
Haunted by the Past Part 65
Back at the apartment Jake secluded himself to his office with all of the new gear. I was told he had to write his own custom modifications to get everything to work how he wanted it and ensure it would behave how it should on the day. In other words, it was time for serious Jake things so I left him alone to work on dinner.
Jake was so completely absorbed in his work that he didn’t even notice me serving dinner onto plates or me calling to him. I walked over to get his attention, but he was so focused on his programming that I couldn’t find it in me to interrupt him. I grabbed my plate and took it to the table to eat resigning to the fact I’d be eating alone, except I accidentally dropped my fork on the way.
“Is dinner done already?” Jake asked from the doorway.
“Oh, yes, I was about to eat,” I smiled as I headed back for a new fork.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” he frowned.
“I did, like three times,” I laughed.
“Sorry,” he mumbled as he grabbed his plate.
We sat down at the table together to eat our dinner. Well, I ate. Jake shovelled food into his mouth, then took his plate back to the kitchen and went back to his office. I was alone again and sighed.
“It's going to take me a while,” Jake suddenly stuck his head out again. “I can feel the deadline looming, MC. For your sake, I can't get distracted.”
“It’s ok. You do Jake things,” I tried to mask my loneliness.
After finishing my dinner, I took my plate to the kitchen and cleaned up. Feeling a bit unsettled, I made myself a hot drink and took it to the couch to check on things on my phone. Sipping my drink, I could not find anything of importance to keep myself entertained. I eventually found myself in the never-ending pit of Youtube videos, as one does when bored. Dan must’ve sensed my boredom as he started sending me ridiculous memes.
MC: Haha, those are great
Dan: She lives!
MC: Of course I live
Dan: I don’t know, it is hard to tell if it’s really you or THAT guy
MC: WTH, Jake doesn’t try to impersonate me
Dan: Kidnappers have been known to do such things
MC: I haven’t been kidnapped
Dan: Graet, then let’s hang out! I've got whisky here wiht your name on it!
MC: ... Are you drunk?
Dan: Pfft no!
MC: How many glasses have you had?
Dan: Two
Dan: Three?
Dan: ... Four...
MC: Right, I see. What’s the occasion this time?
Dan: Ugh the sisters are arguing again. Hannah this Lilly that. It does my head in.
MC: What about?
Dan: Everything? Anything?
Dan: Not that I can blmae Lilly. Hannah's been picking fights.
MC: Wow, that sucks
Dan: Thank you!
Dan: I cant even get Tommy boy to join me.
Dan: “Naw I gotta stick with Hannah. I can’t leave her alone right now. She needs me. Blah blah crowman blah.’
Dan: MC join me!
MC: You know I can’t
Dan: Bullshit!
Dan: You’re no better than the rest of them
Dan: Godamnit I miss Jessy...
MC: I miss her too, Dan
Dan: That car idiot too
Dan: Fuck it! Ill just drink alone then
Dan is offline.
I threw my head back into the cushion. Sorry Hannah, but I kind of missed the old days of playing silly drawing games with our friends. It felt horrible to think it when she was suffering then, but those were such innocent times. Even knowing now that we were being deceived, it was just simpler then. We have to bring this nonsense to a close, once and for all.
MC: Hey Cleo
Cleo is online.
Cleo: Hey! How are you?
MC: Alright, you?
Cleo: Yeah, well, can’t complain. What’s up?
MC: I was just thinking, it’s probably time to remove Jessy and Richy from the group chat.
Cleo: Yeah, you’re probably right. Best to do it before the next big thing happens.
MC: Plus Dan is currently drunk and not paying attention
Cleo: lol ok
Cleo: Oof, can you do it? Pressing the button is harder than I thought.
MC: Sure, no prob
I took a deep breath and went to the group chat. My finger hovered over the kick button for a few moments before finally making contact.
Jessy was removed from the group chat.
Richy was removed from the group chat.
I went back to the private chat with Cleo.
MC: There I did it
Cleo: Sorry for making you do that
MC: No sweat
Meanwhile in the group chat.
Dan is online.
Dan: WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?
Cleo: Dan, please, it was time
Dan: YOU DIDN’T EVEN IT DISCUS IT WIT THE RSET OF US!
MC: Dan, I am the one who did it.
Lilly is online.
Lilly: What is going on?
Dan: THEY FUCKIJG KICKED THEM!
Thomas is online.
Thomas: Whoa, what?
Cleo: Look, we had good reason to.
MC: It’s ok Cleo, let me explain.
Cleo: Go ahead
MC: Jake and I have reason to believe that MWAF is accessing the group chat through one of the two accounts.
MC: Especially since Jessy’s phone was never recovered, it is a security risk.
Hannah is online.
Lilly: Through one of the two accounts? You mean you can’t even say for sure which one? Then how do you even know that one of them has been compromised?
Thomas: Good point, Lilly
Dan: Fucking good point! I call bullshit!
Hannah: Good riddance
Thomas: Hannah...
Lilly: How can you say that!? They were your friends too!
Lilly: Jessy spent her spare time trying to find you! She died trying to find information on your kidnapper!!
Hannah: lol idiot
Hannah is offline.
Lilly: Thomas!!
Thomas: Let me talk with her, ok?
Dan: Tommy boy it’s time. She needs serious help.
Thomas: She’s seeing serious help!
Thomas: She was making real progress until this whole thing started up again!
Dan: Yeha, why the hell hasn't hacker boy found him?
Dan: He must really suck at what he does
MC: Hey, we've got leads, ok? A lot more than we had before!
Dan: And? Finish it already!
MC: It’s not that easy...
Thomas: I know you two have your own thing going on
Thomas: But is it really more important?
Cleo: Thomas! That's crossing the line!
Lilly: OMG you've been around Hannah for too long
Lilly: Last time I checked, MC was the one getting threats, not Hannah
Lilly: Look, you may still not trust Jake, but I do. Those two found Hannah when the rest of us couldn't, don't forget that.
Cleo: Exactly!
Lilly: If you only knew the gravity of what they're going through...
Thomas: If you only understood how much your sister is suffering!
Thomas is offline.
Dan: Why are you flipping sides!?
Lilly: Because maybe they're right, it's time for us to move on
Dan is offline.
Cleo: For crying out loud
Lilly: And that's why I keep telling him no.
Lilly is offline.
Cleo: Well that went swimmingly!
MC: Like ripping bandages off open wounds...
Cleo: We do have to clean the wounds eventually, right?
MC: Yes of course
Cleo: Ok, see you around!
MC: Bye Cleo
Cleo is offline.
I was left again to my thoughts. What Hannah said bothered me. ‘Good riddance'. Of course, to the others it seemed insensitive, but knowing what I knew, maybe it wasn’t. She kept claiming she didn’t know who kidnapped her, but what if she had been lying. Or maybe she couldn’t admit it, especially not to the others. It would’ve been a very difficult thing to say, I couldn’t blame her.
I locked my phone and put it down next to me. I craved reassurance from Jake like nothing else, but I knew how hard he was working. I still couldn’t stop myself from getting up and peeking through the doorway. There he was, so consumed by his work and yet-
“What’s wrong?” he suddenly asked without looking away from his screen. “The group chat has been very active.”
“You haven’t read it?” I questioned.
“I don’t have time to. Just give me a summary,” he replied.
“I removed Jessy and... Richy from the group chat,” I sighed. “Not everyone took it well.”
“It’s about time. Pretty pointless to keep them in the chat,” he responded flatly.
“That’s not all. I think Hannah knows, Jake,” I sighed.
“I find it hard to believe she wouldn’t,” he said unsurprised.
“You told me not to tell her,” I frowned.
“Knowing and acknowledging are two different things, MC. She’s not necessarily lying whenever she says she didn’t recognize her kidnapper. He’s not the person he made himself out to be. It’s better for her to come to terms with it on her own rather than forcing it upon her,” Jake turned to look at me. “Come here.”
He lowered his chair as I inched closer. As soon as I was within reach he pulled me by my hips down to sit across his lap. I leant into him as he tilted my head against his. One of his hands held the back of my neck while his other arm draped over my legs.
“So much for no distractions,” I teased.
“I can’t ignore you when you’re upset,” he sighed. “All I want to do is hold you.”
“That’s all I need,” I smiled.
“Good, because I don’t know what else to do,” he kissed my forehead.
“Can I stay here?” I knew I was being selfish, but being in his arms just felt so comforting that I didn’t want to leave.
“As long as you don’t mind me doing boring work,” he pulled his chair a bit closer to the desk.
“I’m not too distracting?” I looked at him surprised.
“If you keep talking, yes, but if you want to just stay with me and rest, maybe sleep a little, that’s ok,” he caressed my cheek then twisted his head to kiss my lips sensually.
With just one kiss Jake could make the rest of the world disappear like none of it mattered. As he pulled away, I wrapped my arms around him and snuggled up close against him. He shifted in his chair a bit so we'd both sit a bit more comfortably, then he went back to work. My eyelids grew heavy and I let them close so I could just take in his warmth and his smell.
“I love you,” I mumbled without thinking.
Jake kissed me on the forehead again, “I love you too.”

Fic writer interview meme
tagged by @demoiselledefortune, thank you for including me!
My answers are below
How many works do you have on AO3?
69 (nice).
What’s your total AO3 word count?
553,656 words, but I do have several longish collaborations that inflate the wordcount.
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Currently looks to be at 12, not including other tags for the same series (FE and MDZS have different general tags for some things). Majority of my works have been across the Fire Emblem series at this point.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A. Serrated, an MDZS Canon Divergence AU written in part with @mwritesink. It is also the longest fic I have on Ao3 thus far!
B. Return to Childhood Redux, an alternative sequel/spin on one of the Scum Villain Self-Saving System extras that was written for a Bingqiu holiday art and fic exchange. (Note: the rest of the translation at that time was unfinished, so not fully happy with certain characterizations in it, but... popular is popular lolol).
C. The Lion in Winter, a “30 years later” FE15 fic that I still need to finish (and I will!! I will!!! I’m super grateful to everyone who has stuck with it/returned to it thus far!!). It features slowburn Alm/Lukas as sad middle age men.
D. Tassels and Bells, a Serrated sequel/”extras” chapter fic in part with @mwritesink. No set update schedule like the first fic, just more if we’re in the mood to write.
E. Unlike the stream, you are not in view. A (currently) pre-slash Liujiu fic co-written with @dornishsphinx for Liujiu Week 2020, where Liu Qingge is a sharkboy and they meet as kids. My love of monster designs and sharks shines here.
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I try my best to respond! Thankfully a majority of the comments I’ve gotten are positive, and its always satisfying to get ones where “I never thought of this idea/ship/etc. but I love it now bc of you.”
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Garotte, an FE4 bad end fic. But the angst is also mixed in with horror.
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
Hoooooo. Well, Love Like Ghosts is shaping up to be the craziest based on what me and @dornishsphinx planned for it, since it uses all three of MXTX’s current novels in one form or another. Some fun ideas: Meng Shi becomes an aspect of Guanyin in the heavenly realm, Qin Wanyue from Scum Villain and Xue Yang from MDZS end up together-- and those are the least crazy things about it.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Yep! And it was so weird, because... they commented on it after reading nearly 200k worth of content? If you didn’t like it buddy, I think you should have quit while you were ahead.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I don’t know how to respond to the “different kind” question of this lolol... but yep! I’ve written smut. I think my main issue is trying to draw out sex scenes/foreplay when I write it on my own.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Yep! I had at least one that I know of, but that was waaaayyy back on ff.net days. I found it, told my friends about it, then they dogpiled the fic with comments about it being stolen, and then it was deleted soon after. It... looking back on it, it was probably too intense, especially for the fic in question.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, but it is more “had a request, but haven’t seen the result/the one who asked decided not to continue beyond the first chapter.”
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Several times now at this point, and it has been a lovely experience each time. :D
What’s your all time favorite ship?
To write, it looks like right now its setting up to be Arthur/Hawk from FE4... which honestly shows how much of a crackship/rarepair/multiship writer I am haha. I love so, soooooo many ships and love to write for so many ships as well though.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I would like to say never say never, but I’m not sure how to proceed at parts on my Wen Ning/Lan Xichen “everyone else is dead but we’re still here” postcanon fic.
What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Lengthy descriptions of space/character features unless I’m super invested with in the phrase of “I have to make this character the most sexually desirable person in the grocery store.” You feel?
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
I am not comfortable enough in the other languages I know to do that. :D
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Pokemon Special. It was that manga that drove me to write fanfic in the first place.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
On my own, despite some pacing issues and it not being one of my most popular, its Sunbeams Shade Black Wings for the MXTX Big Bang. It just feels... really close to my heart, and one of the fics I wrote through tears at points because I was so invested in writing the story.
I’m not going to tag anyone, but feel free to do it if you like!

The Night Comes Down || Brian May x fem!Reader x Roger Taylor
summary || one of the first rules you’d ever made with brian, your friends-with-benefits, eight months ago, was that anyone could back out of the arrangement at any time, for whatever reason, and then everything would go back to normal. back to how it was. and that’s fine. you have no problem with that. you’re fine. you’re so fine. it’s... fine.
rating || no smut, but some implied explicit content. warning: there is a brief scene where reader is being heavily pressured into kissing someone at a party.
word count || 9.7k
author’s notes || all good things must come to an end! so i’ve been working on this series for over a year. how did that even happen?? anyway yes this is the end of the try series. no it’s not a happy ending. i debated back and forth for a long time whether to end the series or not, but it felt too weird not to. and i couldn’t figure out any reasonable ‘happy’ way for it to end. a big big big thank you to everyone who’s stuck with me for this entire journey, or part of this journey, or even if you’re just tuning in now - thank you! and if you’re still somehow invested in this little ’verse after all this time, don’t abandon me just yet 👀 p.s. i think i’ve ironed out most of the timeline issues but don’t look too closely. this series is not my proudest in terms of continuity

Part of you had known it was inevitable. Another part of you liked to pretend that it wasn’t. But it was.
It still felt like it had come out of nowhere, though.
Brian was watching you cautiously, adjusting the grip on his laptop and workbook. “Did you… want to say anything, or…?”
“Um…” You blinked a couple times, and shook your head. “Uh, no, I’m just… surprised?”
“I feel like I’ve mentioned her a few times,” Brian said.
“Once or twice, maybe,” you said. “I didn’t know that you and her…”
“Yeah.” Brian scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah, we hooked up, like, two weeks ago, and then again a few nights ago, and we’ve been talking every day, so.”
“Oh.” It sounded twisted, wonky, but you forced a smile onto your face, wondering why you felt so… uncomfortable hearing about this. “That’s great. And you like her?”
“Yeah, I really do,” Brian said, and his voice sounded warm, and he had a little smile on his face, and something ugly and strange twisted in your gut. “And I want to take her on an actual date, but obviously, I’d feel a bit weird about it if I still had, y’know. A, uh, side arrangement. But you’re all right?”
“Of course,” you said brightly. Side arrangement. “Yeah, why wouldn’t I be? That’s great, Brian, really. I’m – really glad you’ve found someone.”
“It’s been a while, that’s for sure,” Brian said with a chuckle.
“Are you going to tell Rog?”
Brian frowned a little. “Um, no, I don’t think that’s necessary. I never had – anything with him. And he’s already met Dani, so.”
“Oh!” Ah, Christ, that had sounded dreadful, even to your own ears. “Where– Where’d he meet her?”
“The other day.” Brian gave you a sheepish smile. “The morning after. She ran into him in the kitchen.”
You pushed a strained laugh out of you. “Oh, right, yeah, great.”
Brian chuckled as well. “Yeah, it was a little awkward, but what can you do, right?”
You swallowed, and nodded. Your face hurt from smiling.
“You’ll love her,” Brian said. “She’s wonderful. She’s so smart, and funny, and she’s so pretty. I mean, so pretty. Absolutely beautiful. Completely knocked my socks off when I first saw her. Can’t believe she fancies me.”
“Great,” you said. You were saying great too much. “She sounds–” Don’t. “–so great.”
“She is.” Brian beamed. “You’ll have to meet her soon.”
“I’m sure I will,” you said.
“Yeah, I’m sure,” Brian said. He sighed happily. “Well, I should head off.”
“Yeah, course,” you said. “Me too.”
“I’ll message you,” Brian said. “We can arrange a dinner at the flat or something.”
    “Can’t wait!”
Brian smiled, nodded in satisfaction, and then said, “All right, see you later.”
“Bye!” You turned around and hurried away, in the opposite direction you needed to go.
Hmm. Huh. Right. Okay. So. Brian just. He just.
You went to the food court and sat down at the first available seat you could find.
You took out your phone and immediately went to message Veronica.
    Brian just
    Your thumbs paused.
He just what? He just found someone he wanted to date, and ended his arrangement with you. On paper, not that big of a deal. It was part of the unwritten contract of it all: any person was allowed to end things for whatever reason, and there would be no consequences. A rule you had written yourself, all those months ago.
Side arrangement. Side piece. Dirty secret. Not as good as the real thing. Not as funny or smart or pretty or wonderful or beautiful as Danielle.
You froze. Whoa, where had that come from?
You weren’t jealous. You couldn’t have been jealous. You’d never wanted to date Brian. You still didn’t want to date Brian. You didn’t have a crush on him, and you never had. Brian didn’t break up with you.
So what the everloving fuck was going on in your head right now?
You put your phone away. Nope, you couldn’t go crying to Veronica for no damn reason. This had always been bound to happen, and now it had, so you just needed an hour or so to process it, and then things would be fine. You’d go back to normal.
-
Your idea of ‘normal’ seemed to greatly differ from Brian’s.
You didn’t hear from him for a week. Whereas before you’d talked every other day, he went almost totally radio silent. Every meme or message you sent was either seen and ignored, or responded to with a vague Haha or a thumbs-up.
You met up with Roger on your usual catch-up night, but you hadn’t gotten very far into anything before he stopped and said, “You’re not really feeling it, are you?”
    You made a face. “Sorry.”
“It’s fine.” He passed your shirt to you, and he fetched his from the floor and slipped it on. “So… Brian has a date tomorrow night.”
    You frowned. “He does?”
Roger nodded. “Yeah, he didn’t tell you about it?”
You looked down at your hands. “Um, no. He didn’t. I haven’t heard much from him, actually. After he… ended… things.”
“Whoa,” Roger said, climbing onto the bed. “Wait, really? With you?”
You nodded, and suddenly felt your throat close over. But you were not going to fucking cry about it, Jesus Christ. You swallowed it down, and gave Roger a mild look of interest. “Yeah. I didn’t even know he liked Dani, and then I ran into him at uni last week, and he just sort of said, ‘Hey, while I’m here,’ and then that was it. But I didn’t know the date was tomorrow night. He didn’t tell me.”
“I’m sure he was just distracted,” Roger said. “He gets like that with a girl he likes.” He shook his head. “Damn, he must be serious about her.”
    “Yeah, must be.”
Roger paused, and then said, “Are you… okay?”
You shrugged. “Yeah, of course I am. Why wouldn’t I be?”
“I dunno, it’s a pretty big… thing to have ended.”
“No, I’m fine,” you said lightly, giving him a smile. “We’re still friends. And I’ve still got you, right?”
“Yeah,” Roger said, although he didn’t sound entirely convinced.
“Yeah. So I’m good.” You sighed, willing away all the gross mess of emotions you were feeling. “I’m not really feeling going all the way, but making out sounds good, if you’re down.”
Luckily, that immediately distracted Roger, and he didn’t ask any further questions. And you poured everything you had into your kisses, hoping it would distract you, too.
-
You were hoping things would settle down for you, emotionally, over the next two weeks or so.
But that didn’t happen. Everything grew to be so much worse. Exponentially. You didn’t know whether you hated Brian, or Dani, or hated them as a couple, or if you just hated yourself. You couldn’t bear to be in the same room as the two of them, and you hadn’t spoken more than ten words to Dani. The thought of trying to be friends with her turned your stomach. She wasn’t particularly annoying, and she wasn’t a bad person in any way, but just something about her face and her voice and her fucking presence in your life just infuriated you.
You couldn’t get the idea out of your head that she looked like a mouse. Or a rat. Small pointy nose, big dark eyes, slight buck teeth. She was curvy, and at least a foot shorter than Brian, although it was hard to tell with the heels and platforms she always wore. Her hair was browny-blonde and long and thick, and she wore it slicked back in a pony, like Ariana Grande. Her ears glittered with delicate piercings. She liked to draw on freckles.
She was pretty. For a rat.
You did your best to hide how you felt about her. You thought you should’ve gotten a freaking Oscar for how well you hid it. At least from Brian. On the rare occasion that Dani wasn’t by his side, you let him talk about her, and did your best to seem encouraging.
There was a part of you – a bigger part than you wanted to admit – that believed they were going to break up soon enough. Then things could go back to normal, and this weird hiccup could be forgotten.
But they didn’t break up. They stayed together.
And so you ended up ranting about it all to Veronica. You knew you were really going on about it, and somehow you kept finding things to say about the situation when you knew there was nothing really more to say. Veronica listened, to a degree. But her advice was sensible and responsible and mature and you really didn’t feel like being any of those things. You wanted to throw a goddamn tantrum.
So you turned to Roger. Thank God for his high sex drive.
He wasn’t completely clueless. You had an air of desperation about you that you knew he could sense, and knowing that was almost enough to make you draw away from him, too.
Almost. But he always took such good care of you. It was selfish to keep asking him to meet up, but you felt like you would explode if you didn’t.
About a month after Brian and Dani had started dating, you and Roger were making out on the couch. It was rough, as sex frequently had been these past few weeks, and Roger’s grip on your waist was bruising as you rocked against him. Things were moments away from moving to the bedroom, when the front door opened unexpectedly.
You quickly looked up, a deer in headlights, and your stomach dropped.
“Oh, sorry,” Brian mumbled, ducking his head.
“No, it’s fine,” you said, and you’d tried to go for nonchalant, but your voice came out too sharp.
Roger tilted his head back. “Hi.”
“Hi,” Brian said. You watched as he kicked his shoes off and chucked his keys on the kitchen table.
“Sorry,” he said again, shooting you a quick glance. “I’ll just, uh…”
    He hurried to his room.
There you were, looking already thoroughly debauched, on his couch, in Roger’s lap, and Brian had just ducked his head and ran.
You stared after him, your heart twisting around itself. He hadn’t even… He didn’t…
Once, he would have taken one look at you and pounced on you. He would’ve begged to kiss you, would’ve torn your clothes off.
Now, he acted like he’d walked in on Roger having a one-night stand with some girl he’d picked up at a bar. He acted like he’d never even been attracted to you at all.
Was it really so easy for him to move on? Were you really that forgettable?
“You all right?” Roger asked, his thumb touching your bottom lip.
You snapped to look at him. Shit, how much had you let on? “Yeah,” you said with a smile. “Just lost in my thoughts, nothing important.”
    “You sure?” Roger asked.
You bit your lip and nodded. “Mm-hm. How about you take me to your room and fuck all those stupid little thoughts out of me?”
Roger paused for a moment, like he wanted to say something more, but your tongue darted out, lapping at the pad of his thumb, and you kept your eyes on his as you licked his thumb into your mouth. You watched, half excited, half relieved, as his eyes glazed over, his gaze fixated on your lips around his thumb.
It sickened you to even think about it, but you definitely had a little voice in the back of your head that hoped Brian could hear Roger fucking you.
-
“We should hang out,” you said to Brian. Just over a month, now. Final exams were breathing down everyone’s necks. It didn’t help your situation. “I feel like I never get to see you anymore. You’re with your girlfriend all the time.”
You’d run into him at uni. That was almost the only way you got to see him these days. And he no longer hugged you hello or goodbye, just kept a firm, amicable amount of distance between you.
He didn’t often look you in the eye these days, either. He shifted about whenever you talked, like he wanted to be somewhere else.
    “Mm, yeah, maybe,” he said.
You swallowed down the hurt. “How about a movie night? Or we could just hang out, just the two of us.”
“Um.” Brian scratched his nose. “I’m pretty busy at the moment. Maybe we could do a group thing? That’d be fun. Me and Dani, John and Veronica, you and Rog.”
    You frowned. “Me and Rog?”
    “Yeah.”
    “We’re not together.”
Brian shrugged. “I just thought– Well, I think it’d be nice. You two suit each other.”
“We don’t want to be a couple, Brian. What are you on about?”
“I just think it’d be good for you, that’s all. Being in a relationship is, well, really nice, and I think maybe you and Rog should at least give it a go.”
You were gobsmacked. You wanted to throw something, yell a stern reminder of, Hey, are you fucking stupid? Do you not remember the past eight months of our lives where you seemed perfectly content to not be in a relationship? Remember how many times the two of us were hounded by our friends about dating? You fucking hypocrite.
But you didn’t say any of that. There was an unspoken rule that neither of you ever brought up your old arrangement. It was as if it had never existed.
Most of the time, it seemed like Brian wished it hadn’t. Like it was some embarrassing secret.
“Well, we don’t want that, so you can mind your own business,” you said. “And where does Freddie fit into your little equation, anyway?”
Brian shrugged again. “He could bring a date along as well, I don’t know.”
“We’re not going on a– a quadruple date. Jesus.”
    “Just an idea,” Brian muttered.
“You can still hang out with friends without your girlfriend, you know.”
    Brian sighed. “Okay. Well.”
You sighed as well, gathering yourself. You tried again. “What about a party, or something? We haven’t been to a party in forever.”
Brian hesitated. “Well, one of Dani’s friends is having a party this weekend.”
Not exactly what you’d meant. “Maybe a little group of us could go?” you suggested. “If Dani’s all right with it? That could be fun.”
Brian nodded to himself. “Yeah,” he said mildly. “Yeah, that could work. I’ll ask her.”
“Great,” you said with a smile that you most certainly had to force onto your face. You began making a quick retreat, not waiting for him to formulate an excuse. “Text me, okay?”
“Yep,” he said, and you could tell he was already forgetting about it completely.
But, to your surprise, that weekend, you got a text from him. Dani said it’s all right if you and the others want to come along.
Your lip curled. It hardly sounded like Brian wanted any of you there. great, you replied. pres at yours?
I’ll actually be having pres at Lachlan’s, Brian sent. He’s one of Dani’s friends. But I’ll send you the details of the party and I’ll see you there.
But no one else wanted to come.
“No thanks,” Roger grumbled. “I’ve met some of Dani’s friends. They’re all complete wankers.”
“But I don’t want to go alone,” you whined.
“Ask Freddie. He’s always down for a good time.”
-
I can’t darling, Freddie texted. work early the next day. they said if I turn up hung-over or still drunk one more time they’ll fire me
u don’t have to get that drunk, you replied hopefully. just drink a bit and then go home early
then what would be the point of going lol?? Freddie sent.
-
    “Sorry,” Veronica said. “Studying.”
You sulked. “You can’t afford to take a break just for a couple hours?”
“No. And, honestly, I don’t want to enable whatever thing you’re going through right now. I think getting drunk around Brian would be a bad idea.”
“I’ll be fine,” you said. “I just want an excuse to hang out as friends, okay? That’s all. It’s not enabling, it’s supporting.”
Veronica made a sound that told you she disagreed. You huffed and gave up. What did she know, anyway?
-
    “Hey, Dea–”
“I’m not going to that party tonight,” John cut in smoothly, not even looking up from his textbook.
    “But–”
“I’d rather sever my own foot.” He glanced up at you, giving you an apologetic half-smile. “Sorry. I just can’t stand being around Brian and Dani. They’re insufferable.”
At least that you could agree with.
-
everyone else is busy, you texted Brian. You bit your lip, debating whether to ask, but, damn it, fuck it all – can I come to lachlan’s pres and go with u guys?
It took him two hours to reply. Yeah, sure.
You felt sick. This was a bad idea.
It was by far too much trouble for what it was worth to get to Lachlan’s. You were terrified of turning up before Brian and Dani, so you arrived two and a half hours after when you were meant to be there.
That was better. It was easier to rock up when everyone was already pissed.
And they were very much pissed. Lachlan answered the door. He was tall and stocky, with brown hair and blue eyes. The sort of guy who looked like he’d played some kind of contact sport in high school, probably football, but now didn’t have a regular training schedule, and so was slowly losing the muscle he’d once had, replacing it with beer and burgers. The sort of guy who’d lose all of his hair by the time he was thirty-five, and get married so he’d have someone to get his beers for him when he was watching the game with the boys. The sort of guy who wanted kids because he liked the thought of telling people he had a couple of boys, rather than actually wanting to be a father.
Or maybe you were making a snap-judgement.
You introduced yourself, and he gave you a lopsided, skeezy grin, letting you into his place. “You here all on your own?” he asked.
Your shoulders tensed. “No,” you said. “I’m a friend of Brian’s. Dani’s new boyfriend.”
“Oh, yeah, sure, I know that. But you don’t have anyone to bring along with you?”
“Not tonight,” you said vaguely. “Busy schedules. Finals aren’t too far away, and all that.”
“Yeah, sick,” Lachlan said, looking you up and down. “Well.” He gestured with his beer to the crowd. “Make yourself at home.” He shot you another grin that made your hands grow clammy. “I’m glad Dani brought you along. Can’t wait to get to know you.”
You gave him an uneasy smile in return, and frantically looked for Brian and Dani. You found them – Dani was sitting on Brian’s lap, yuck – and fled from Lachlan.
    “Hi,” you said.
“Oh, hey,” Brian said, and you could tell right off the bat he’d had a bit to drink already. His hand was splayed over Dani’s thigh, holding her to him, and you couldn’t bear to look at it. “Thought you weren’t gonna come.”
“I’m just late,” you said. “Hello, Dani.”
She gave you a polite smile, but didn’t try to engage in conversation.
Brian didn’t even notice. He squeezed Dani a little bit closer. “Well, you gonna drink?” he said.
Yes. Yes, you were. You held up your plastic bottle filled with Sprite and too much vodka. “Yep.”
    Brian gave you a thumbs-up.
Dani turned to him. “Just need to go to the bathroom, baby,” she murmured, tapping his hand.
“All right, baby,” Brian murmured back, and you only just stopped yourself from making a face. The word baby sounded clunky, uncomfortable coming from Brian. “Be careful.”
Dani leant in for a kiss, and you turned away, uncapping your bottle and taking a decent swig, grimacing at the burn.
Brian didn’t like pet names. You knew he didn’t like pet names. And yet this ‘baby’ thing had sprung out of nowhere, and it drove you up the fucking wall.
You listened until the sound of Dani’s heels against the floorboards faded before you spoke. “‘Be careful’,” you muttered.
    “What?” Brian said.
“She’s just walking to the toilet,” you said. “Not like she’s gonna get assaulted on the way.”
Brian looked mildly annoyed. “I just don’t want her to trip and fall over and hurt herself. She’s a lightweight, and she’s wearing heels. I’m just… trying to be a good boyfriend.”
You sighed. “Yeah, okay,” you said, not wanting to hear a word of it. You took another hefty swig of your drink. “I think I’ll, um, join the rest of the party.”
So much for hanging out with Brian. You wanted to be near him, wanted to talk to him, but you couldn’t bear it for more than five minutes.
You knew what it was – you wanted to talk to him how you used to. But you couldn’t do that anymore. Instead you had some weird, watered-down version of the Brian you knew.
You joined in half-heartedly with a few drinking games, but quickly discovered that you weren’t really in the mood for getting smashed anyway.
Brian and Dani stayed in their own little corner, giggling and whispering with each other, kissing and cuddling and being generally disgusting.
-
You didn’t even think they’d bother coming to the actual party. But they did, and the group of fifteen or so people in Lachlan’s sharehouse all staggered along the street for about ten minutes to get to the main event.
You’d managed to get along well enough with some of the girls, and Lachlan wouldn’t leave you alone, so you had no choice but to socialise. Which was good, in a way, because you lost Dani and Brian as soon as you walked into the party.
Not that you particularly liked the girls you were talking to. Everyone just had such a weird vibe, like they weren’t sure if they could be bothered to talk to you, but also felt obliged to make you feel welcome. They kept bursting into laughter and you had no idea why, and no one bothered to explain the jokes. But then they complimented your outfit and asked you how your day had been, and they listened with encouraging nods and wide eyes of interest when you answered. Until someone said something that they found more interesting, and then they turned away from you when you were halfway through a sentence. It was off-putting, to say the least; you couldn’t seem to find your footing.
Lachlan, however, was the icing on the cake. The sour, out-of-date icing on the stale cake. He flirted with you incessantly, either not picking up your clear signals that you weren’t interested, or just ignoring them. The others weren’t helping, either, egging the two of you on. A whole lot of wink-wink-nudge-nudge that you were not enjoying at all.
You should’ve just gone home. You didn’t know why you didn’t just leave.
But, for some reason, you stayed. Maybe you hoped that Brian would see your discomfort and come and talk to you – not that you’d seen him for the past hour – or that this strange group of people would want to talk with their friend Dani, and you’d be able to swoop in and catch up with Brian without Dani hanging around awkwardly.
Whatever it was, it was a stupid reason.
And then came truth or dare.
You didn’t want to play, but you were roped into it regardless. There was a rule, you found out, that you were allowed to back out of one truth or dare, and you had to drink if you did so – but only the once, so you had to choose wisely. Someone dared you to show everyone what underwear you were wearing.
Needless to say, you drank instead.
You could tell that no one was very impressed with any of the dares or questions you came up with, even though your friendship group loved your questions and dares. This group seemed to like the brainless shit – if it was gross, or sexual, or nasty in any way, they were all over it. Barely anyone chose ‘truth’.
Then it was Lachlan’s turn, and he turned to you. He grinned, and your stomach sank to the floor. “Dare you to kiss me,” he drawled, and the crowd gasped and ooh’d dramatically.
You didn’t even hesitate to snatch up your cider, but Lachlan quickly said, “You’ve already drunk, you can’t do it twice.”
“Well, I’m doing it twice,” you snapped, and took a swig.
You received jeers and boos for that, and Gina, the girl beside you, took your beer from your hand and said, “You can’t do that!”
“You gotta kiss me, that’s the rules,” Lachlan said above the sounds of everyone else.
“I don’t want to,” you said, your voice wavering.
“You have to,” said Savannah. “You have to, you have to, it’s the rules.”
“Come on,” said – whatever her fucking name was. “Stop being such a pussy, just get it over with.”
Lachlan was starting to look a bit pissed off by now. “Fucking hell, just come and kiss me,” he said. “Don’t be a bitch about it.”
Your heart was pounding in your chest, and you could feel your hands starting to shake. “Jesus – no, all right? I don’t want to,” you snapped.
The room felt too loud, too stuffy, too overwhelming.
“Lachlan, just think of something else,” you said.
“Okay, fine, whatever,” Gina complained. “Just do something else.”
“No, I gave you a dare already,” Lachlan said sourly. “It’s not even that big of a deal, like, I don’t even know what the problem is.”
     “If she doesn’t want to-”
“That’s the fucking rules,” Lachlan said, throwing his hands in the air like you were the one being unreasonable. “Is that not the fucking rules? Goddamn.”
“Okay, then just kiss him already,” said whatever-the-fuck-her-name-was, waving you over. “Whatever, just hurry up.”
“I’m fucking bored with this shit already,” Savannah said. “Just kiss him or don’t kiss him, whatever. God, this party sucks.”
“It doesn’t suck, she’s just being a bitch,” Lachlan protested.
“Don’t call me a bitch,” you said.
“I’m just teasing,” Lachlan said, crawling over to you. You shrunk away from him, your heart beating like a cantering horse, and he grabbed your wrist. “One kiss, c’mon,” he said, his voice light and friendly, like you were happy to play along.
But you weren’t happy to play along. You didn’t know if everyone was too drunk to notice your obvious discomfort, or they didn’t care, but this was crossing the goddamn line.
“Fuck off, Lachlan,” you said, trying to pull your wrist back. You’d wanted your voice to be tough, to be assertive, but it was small and weak, and then Lachlan leant in for a kiss.
You turned your face away. “Lachlan–”
“Just fucking kiss me, for God’s sake, woman,” Lachlan growled, and grabbed your face with his other hand.
You pushed his hand away, and, without thinking, blurted out the one word that your panicked brain told you would stop everything in its tracks: “Nickleback.”
“What?” Lachlan said, and, good fucking God, of course that wouldn’t work, you were such a fucking idiot, and now you had no back-up plan, nothing else to do, and that word was supposed to stop things, why wasn’t it stopping things–
But then Lachlan was gone, and you felt a hand grab your other wrist and yank you up from the floor, and you unthinkingly leant into the body the hand belonged to as you were led from the room and into a bedroom, and the noise around you became muffled as the door closed behind you.
Then Brian was setting you down on the bed and sitting beside you. In an ideal world, he would have wrapped his arms around you and you would’ve been able to breathe again, like in a movie, but instead there was an awkward amount of space between you as he gingerly asked, “Are you all right?”
You barely even snuck a glance at him. You were humiliated by what had just happened, humiliated by needing him to rescue you, humiliated by your desperate craving for his touch, his comfort. You stared at the floor, curling in on yourself, and you nodded silently. Your hands still shook from adrenaline, and you could hear your heartbeat in your ears.
    Brian sighed. “I’m sorry about them. I didn’t know…”
You shook your head. “It’s fine,” you mumbled.
Brian said nothing for a while, and then he reached over and patted you on the back. So achingly unfamiliar, and you felt your shoulders grow even more hunched than they already were. You didn’t think he’d ever touched you like that. Like you were a complete stranger.
You ducked your head, squeezing your eyes shut. Don’t you dare fucking cry.
There was a soft knock on the door, and Brian said, “Yeah?”
You glanced up to see Dani poke her head in, and you quickly looked away again. “Hey, baby,” she said.
    Your stomach crawled.
    “Is everything okay?”
    “Yeah, it’s fine,” Brian said.
“All right,” Dani said. You could feel her hovering awkwardly.
Brian said your name, catching your attention, and then said, “I’ll just… let you have some time to yourself, all right?”
You said nothing. You did nothing. And Brian stood up and left the room, closing the door behind him.
“What happened?” came Dani’s voice from just outside the door.
“Lachlan was harassing her,” Brian said.
“They were just playing,” Dani said. “They’re all drunk, it’s just truth or dare.”
    “No, I know, but…”
“You didn’t have to run in there like there was a fire and pull her out of there like that. Everyone’s going to ask me what that was all about. Where did that come from?”
Your ears were straining to hear Brian’s response.
“I… I just knew she needed to get out,” he said eventually.
“She could have left if she was uncomfortable.”
“She gets really anxious sometimes, she just freezes.”
You realised, then, that he must’ve heard you say ‘Nickleback’. He must have heard it and immediately known that something was wrong.
You groaned quietly to yourself, covering your face with your hands. Your ex-friend-with-benefits had heard you yell out your old safeword in the middle of a party, and had felt obliged to rush in like a knight in shining armour to swoop you to safety. Jesus Christ.
“She’s an adult, baby,” Dani said. “I’m sure she was fine.” You heard someone sigh. “It’s sweet that you guys are friends, but you don’t have to…”
    “What?”
“Look out for her that much.”
“What do you mean? She’s my friend.”
Dani was silent for a while. “Did you guys used to…?”
The air was sucked from the room. Your ears strained to hear every word.
    “What?” Brian said, clearly thrown.
“Did you used to date? It just seems like…”
“No,” Brian said quickly. “No, we never dated.”
    “You’re not lying to me?”
“No, baby. I promise you, we never dated.”
    You grimaced.
Someone sighed again. “Okay,” Dani said. “Good. The last thing I’d want is for you to be friends with an ex.”
Brian chuckled. It sounded forced. “Yeah, of course.”
“I’m glad we agree. Gimme a kissy?”
You could’ve thrown up right then and there. A kissy?
You could hear them murmuring to each other, and Dani’s voice had a particular whiny, baby-talk tone to it that made you want to ‘accidentally’ open the door into the both of them. But then they left, and you were even more alone than before, and you lay down on the bed and curled into a ball, feeling sorry for yourself.
It was time to go home.
-
By the grace of God himself, Brian offered to wait outside with you, sitting beside you on the kerb, while you called a ride home. Dani stayed inside with her friends.
“I’m sorry about… what happened,” Brian said, and you went still as a statue.
“What do you mean?” you said softly.
    “Lachlan, and all of that.”
You let out a breath. “Oh,” you said. “Yeah, that. It’s fine.”
Silence. It wriggled under your skin like cockroaches.
You wanted to touch Brian. You wanted him to touch you. You wanted Roger there, too. You wanted them to want you, like they used to. You wanted to be allowed to want them like they used to love.
But Roger wasn’t there. And Brian barely was, either.
“Brian?” Dani called from the front door.
Brian twisted around. “Yeah, I’m here.”
“Oh, okay. Just checking everything’s good.”
“Yeah, we’re fine. Still waiting for the car.”
    “Okay. See you inside.”
    “Yep.”
    “Miss you, baby.”
    Brian chuckled. “Miss you too.”
You waited until Brian had turned back around to face the road, and then blurted out, “Why do you let her call you that? You hate pet names.”
Brian frowned, looking to you. “What?”
    “Pet names. You hate them.”
“I don’t hate them,” he said.
“You don’t like them, at least.”
    “According to who?”
“According to you,” you said. “You told me. And you never–” You never called me anything but my name when we were fucking. “You never said you liked them.”
“Well, I do,” Brian said. “And why do you care, anyway?”
“I just think it’s weird,” you said, and you were aiming for casual but you knew you sounded brash. “You don’t sound like yourself.”
“I’ve never had a girlfriend the whole time we’ve known each other,” Brian said. “You don’t know what I’m like when I’m in a relationship.”
“You shouldn’t change who you are when you’re in a relationship,” you said. “That doesn’t make sense.”
“I’m not changing who I am,” Brian said, his face pinched. “What has gotten into you?”
“Nothing,” you said harshly. “I just think you’re lying to yourself. You don’t like calling her baby, and you don’t like being called baby, and I just think it’s weird that you wouldn’t just say that.”
“Well, I just think it’s weird you think you have the right to comment on my relationship,” Brian said. “I like calling her baby. And I like it when she calls me baby.”
“But you don’t,” you insisted. “I can hear it in your voice.”
“What?” Brian exclaimed. “What the fuck are you on about?”
“I know you, okay?” you snapped. “I know you far better than she does. And I know you don’t like pet names, but you won’t tell her for some reason.”
“I won’t tell her because I like them,” Brian said. “And she knows me, too, you know.”
“She’s known you for, like, two months! Less than!” you said. “That’s nothing.”
“Why…” Brian floundered. “There isn’t some – time limit on these things. You can’t judge if someone knows someone better just by how long…”
“I just don’t get it,” you said. “Maybe that’s my fault, but I don’t get how someone can just walk into your life and suddenly they’re the most important person you’ve ever met when you’ve only known them for five minutes.”
“You’ve clearly never fallen in love,” Brian said snootily.
“Oh, fuck off,” you scoffed. “You’re not in love with her.”
    “How would you know?”
“You’ve only been dating a couple weeks! Come on, Brian. You can call each other baby all you like, but I know you.”
“I like pet names,” Brian said, his voice hard. “I just never called you one because, in case you’ve forgotten, you were never my fucking girlfriend. So, for the love of God, can you stop acting like a jealous ex.”
It was like a stab to the gut and a twist of the knife all at the same time. All you could do was sit in stunned silence.
Brian looked at you, almost like he was waiting for a response, and when he never received one, he sighed, stood, and left.
Your chin wobbled, your vision blurred, and you scrabbled for your phone in your handbag.
-
    Roger opened the door. “Hey–”
You leapt onto him, kissing him furiously. He stumbled, but kept his balance, one arm curling around your waist and the other groping for the door, pushing it closed. You spun him around and backed him up, pressing him against the door, and ducked your head to suck at his neck, palming at him through his sweatpants.
Roger jumped. “Oh, God, okay,” he said with a surprised laugh. “You’re really…”
You nodded, and captured his lips again, nipping at his bottom lip. “I want you so bad,” you breathed. “I want you to fuck me hard, Daddy, please.”
You didn’t wait for him to reply, and kissed him. You slipped your hands into his underwear, and he tensed underneath you, surprised again.
You needed him to fuck you, to bruise you, to bite you. To make you feel wanted, needed. To mark you up, to make you scream, to make it hurt. You needed it so badly that your hands shook.
Roger put a hand to your collarbones, and you thought he was going to choke you, but instead he pushed you back, just enough to stare into your face.
“Are you sure you want to call me Daddy?” he asked unsurely. “You seem a little…”
    “What?” you said.
“Not yourself,” Roger said. “Are you– Have you been drinking?”
“The fuck does that mean?” you said. “I just really need you to fuck me hard, does that not sound like me?”
    “I don’t–”
“Roger,” you cut in sharply, and then quickly softened your tone into something whinier, needier, more enticing. “Daddy. I want you. Please.”
Roger’s frown never disappeared. “I don’t want you to call me Daddy,” he said.
You blinked, taken aback. “Um, okay,” you said. You could still work with that. “No Daddy.” You went to kiss him again, but he held you away.
You resisted huffing in frustration. “Roger…”
“This is about Brian, isn’t it?” he said.
“What?” you said. “No. Why would it be about Brian? I want you.”
“You’re drunk and upset and jealous, and you want me to fuck you how he used to fuck you, because you miss it.”
A slap to the face would’ve hurt less. Your hands fell limp at your sides. “What?”
“Is that not what’s happening right now?” Roger said, his hands dropping as well. “Is that not why you’re over? You went to that party, got yourself all worked up and upset, and now you want to be fucked how Brian used to fuck you?”
You blinked. “N– No,” you said, and you meant it, but the more Roger said it, the more you thought that maybe he was right, and you hadn’t even realised.
“Because it’s what it feels like,” Roger said. “It feels like I’m just an outlet for you. It’s not even about you and me anymore, it’s about you and him.”
Oh my God. You hated to admit it, but he was right. You covered your mouth with your hands, horrified at yourself. “Fuck, Roger, I…”
“I’m ending the arrangement between us,” he said simply. “It’s not fun anymore, and it’s definitely not healthy. You need time to… I don’t even know. But you need time, and I don’t really feel like being collateral damage. Especially not with end-of-year exams literally just around the corner.”
No. No, no, no, fuck, not this, anything but this.
“No, Rog, please, I’m sorry,” you said. “I wasn’t thinking, I– I can’t–” You felt tears welling up in your eyes. “Please. I…”
Roger sighed, and pulled you into a hug. You clutched onto him, and, finally, cried. “Jesus Christ,” he murmured sympathetically, stroking your hair. “This whole thing has really messed you up, hasn’t it?”
“I c– can’t lose you t– too,” you sobbed into his shirt.
“You’re not losing me. We’re still friends. It just… won’t be with the benefits anymore. For now, at least. Maybe forever, I don’t know. See how things go. But I’m never going to stop being friends with you.”
Your body shook as you cried, and Roger rubbed your back, letting you ruin his shirt.
-
The Bee Movie played on the TV, but your heart wasn’t in it. You leant against Roger, a cup of tea in your hands, and one in his. You were exhausted from crying, and you almost found yourself nodding off. Normally there was nothing more fun than enjoying the trials and tribulations of Barry B. Benson with Roger, but now not even casual bestiality was enough to cheer you up.
Roger didn’t say much, either. You had no idea what he was thinking, although you were pretty sure he wasn’t really watching the movie, just staring at the screen.
“I’m sorry,” you said, your voice breaking a little.
Roger sighed. “It’s okay,” he said, giving you a soft, sad smile. “I know you’re going through a tough time right now.”
“I don’t even understand why,” you said, your bottom lip trembling. Not again. “I never liked him like that, not ever. I know I never liked him like that. I didn’t want to go out on dates with him, or be his girlfriend, or any of that. So I don’t get why it – hurts so much.”
“Your thing went on for a really long time,” Roger reasoned. “And now it’s gone. I can’t blame you. I…” He bit his lip. “I… kinda miss it too, to be honest.”
You frowned at him in confusion. “You miss… Brian?”
“I miss…” Roger took a sip of his tea. “I miss the dynamic, I suppose. We actually got a lot closer because of it. And it was fun, you know? Especially the threesomes, those were really fun.”
    You managed a tired laugh.
“It was just nice to have… a thing, that was ours,” Roger said. “Us three, I don’t know. This thing that was ours. I don’t know if that makes sense.”
“No, it does,” you said. You paused, and then said, “You and Brian aren’t as close now?”
Roger shrugged a shoulder. “Not… really?” he said unsurely. “We haven’t really hung out a lot recently. I mean, we’ve been studying a lot, so I haven’t really seen much of anyone as of late, but, like, for a while, me and Brian hung out a whole lot, just the two of us. Guess you end up feeling closer when you have to talk about your feelings all the time. And when you see each other naked every so often.” He shot you a smile, and you smiled back. “But now it’s sort of in a weird place. I mean, none of us have seen him a lot, he’s just with Dani all day and night. Which makes sense, they’re in their honeymoon phase. But I do miss… that.”
You nodded in understanding. “It doesn’t even feel like he wants to be around me,” you said in a small voice. “Like I’m not even friends with him anymore.”
“You are,” Roger assured you. “You just… both have to learn how to be… normal friends again.”
    “And us too,” you added.
Roger blinked, but nodded. “Yeah,” he said. “Yeah, us, too.”
You didn’t want to say it, you knew you shouldn’t say it, but the alcohol had loosened your tongue: “You gonna miss me?”
Roger’s eyes widened for a moment, and then he took a big breath in and out, shaking his head. “Damn,” he muttered.
“Sorry, ignore me,” you mumbled. “I’m just being sad and pathetic.”
“You’re not sad and pathetic,” Roger said. “But I’m not gonna miss you, you’ll still be around.”
“You know what I mean,” you said.
“Yeah, I know,” Roger said. He sighed again. “I don’t think… it would be good for either of us if I answered that.”
You said nothing. It felt like Roger wanted to say more, but he didn’t.
“But…” You looked to him, and he looked to you. “Can we still be friends like before?” you asked him. “I mean, just – with Brian, he won’t even hug me hello or goodbye, he barely looks at me, he doesn’t want to be near me, I just–” You shook your head. “I couldn’t stand it if you did that, too. Can we at least just be friends?”
Roger nodded. “Of course,” he said.
    “Yes?”
“Yes, of course,” he said again. “I promise you, okay? I like hugs just as much as you do.”
    You nodded, reassured. “Thank you.”
Roger threw his arm around you and gave you a squeeze, then took his arm back.
A month and a bit ago, he would’ve left his arm there, around your shoulders. You would’ve pressed closer into him. Probably eventually would’ve lifted your head to kiss his neck, or maybe your hands – or his hands – would’ve gone wandering.
But a squeeze was something, at least, and you were grateful for it. You told yourself you were grateful for it.
-
Three-ish months later
The air was just starting to cool, and, for the first time in a while, you pulled on a jacket.
It had been a while since you’d seen your flat. You’d gone home for the summer – not for the whole time, you still had rent to pay and you didn’t want to waste it, but for a few weeks – which had been a welcomed change of scenery.
After how your previous semester of uni had ended, the last thing you’d wanted was to hang around the flat.
It had been an uncomfortable summer. The mid-year break, last year, you hadn’t gone home. You’d told your parents it was because of the rent thing, but in reality, it had mostly been about Roger and Brian. A month off uni, and your flatmate Lucy had gone home for the break, meaning you had a free house? That had been a wild couple of weeks.
You shook your head. Stop, you reprimanded yourself. It did you no good to reminisce. You’d had an entire summer to sort things out for yourself, to reset, and it was a bad idea to let yourself slip. You’d barely spoken to Roger or Brian all summer, just to give yourself some space.
You’d missed them. A lot. Maybe cried once or twice. Maybe more. But that was only for you to know.
You doubted that they’d missed you.
The thought still felt like a stab to the gut, and you squeezed your eyes shut, shaking your head at yourself. Stop it. Stop.
There was a knock on the front door, and you were momentarily surprised – but you knew it was Veronica. You took a moment to get your thoughts together, then hurried to the door to let her in.
She greeted you with a joyous cry of your name and a warm hug. “It’s been so long!”
The two of you rocked from foot to foot, and you breathed in her familiar smell. You hadn’t seen her since before Christmas.
When the hug eventually ended, Veronica sighed happily. “Can’t believe I’ve missed you,” she said, and you laughed, giving her a backhand slap on the arm.
    “Cow,” you said.
“So you’ve kept the same place?”
    “Yep,” you said.
    “Lucy still your flatmate?”
    “Yeah. It works well, so.”
“No, no, she’s lovely,” Veronica said with a nod. “Did she want to come to drinks tonight?”
You glanced towards Lucy’s room instinctively, even though you knew she wasn’t in there. “She’s not coming back until Wednesday, I think.”
“Ah, well, answers that question.” Veronica gave you a smile. You could tell there was a question on the tip of her tongue, and you just stood there, waiting for her to ask it.
She sighed again, resigned. She knew she’d been sprung. “I wasn’t going to ask. I– I wasn’t sure if I should.”
“I’m okay,” you said. “I’m fine.”
Veronica squinted at you unsurely, like she wanted to press you for further information, but wasn’t sure if it was a good idea. “Fine?”
“It’s been a bit rough, but I’m okay,” you said.
You’d tell her the truth soon enough. You had no willpower when it came to Veronica. But you weren’t in the mood for a whole conversation right now.
“So you’re all right for tonight?”
You rolled your eyes. “Am I capable of getting drinks with my friends? Yes, I think so.”
“Even though Dani will be there?”
“Brian and Dani have been dating for, like, five months now – and don’t say it like that. Brian isn’t my ex.”
    “Roger’s dating someone,” Veronica blurted.
Your heart leapt into your throat. Stop. “Oh?” you said, and it sounded warped and wonky. “Since when? Good for him. Have you met her?”
“Once,” Veronica said. “Just last week, when I dropped by the flat. Her name is–” She let out a laugh. “Actually, this is really funny. Her name is Freddy.”
You laughed. “What?” you squawked. “Freddy?”
“Freddy with a Y,” Veronica said. “Roger made that very clear when I met her. As if that changes anything.”
“God, I bet that’s confusing in bed,” you said.
“Yeah, well, I’m guessing the ‘with a Y’ part makes all the difference for Roger.”
“Freddy,” you mused. “What’s it short for?”
“No idea. But she’s not as hot as you are.”
You shot Veronica a mock glare. “Roger isn’t my ex either.”
“Still,” Veronica said lightly. She hesitated, and then said, “Have you spoken to either of them recently?”
“No, not really,” you said, as casually as you could muster. “Look, Ron, could we just… table this conversation for later? I’m not really up to it.”
“Yeah, of course,” Veronica said, waving a hand. “Sorry, sorry, I’ll keep my nose out of it. Let’s just go. Are you ready?”
You took a steadying breath. “So ready,” you said, hoping you sounded more confident than you felt.
-
Arriving at the local pub felt like coming home. The smell of beer, the roar of conversation, the bundles of people crowded around tables. The floor was sticky, there weren’t enough places to sit, and the prices up on the chalkboard on the wall were far too high.
You scrunched your nose. Coming home sucked.
“I forgot how much I hate this place,” you yelled into Veronica’s ear. “We need to find somewhere less popular, Jesus.”
“I know,” Veronica said. “I’ve mentioned it to John; he thinks the same.”
    “Next time.”
    “Yeah, next time.”
    You said that every time.
Veronica corroborated her instructional texts from John with the view in front of her in order to find everyone else. They were tucked away in a corner booth, crammed into the space.
You’d had enough trouble as it was, trying to fit everyone into a booth. You couldn’t even imagine how you were going to make it work with two new people in the group.
Veronica took your hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze as you neared the table.
There was John, at the end of the booth, facing you – his eyes lit up when he spotted Veronica, and began shifting over to make room for her beside him. At the end of the table, on a chair, was Freddie. He noticed John’s line of sight, and he turned to you, his smile wide.
You couldn’t really see the others. Just the back of Brian’s head. But that was hard to miss.
Freddie stood up to give you a warm hug as Veronica tossed around a few ‘hello’s and slid in next to John. “Darling!” Freddie said. “I haven’t seen you all break.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” you said.
Freddie waved you off. “It’s fine,” he said. “I understand.” He glanced towards the other occupants of the booth.
“Don’t start,” you muttered, and Freddie gave your arm a swift pat.
“Speaking of which,” he said, turning. “Roger, Brian, you remember our dear friend, I’m sure?”
You resisted elbowing Freddie in the side, giving Brian and Roger tight smiles.
At the same time, your eyes landed on Dani and her browny blonde Ariana Grande ponytail and her mouse face and her curvy body pressed into Brian’s side. And beside Roger, tucked under his arm, was a blonde, tanned girl. Blue eyes, like Roger, but hers were light, strikingly so, and a perfect full face of make-up. Her brows were dark and bold, and her lips looked pouty and soft.
‘Not as hot as you were’ your arse. This girl looked like she modelled in her spare time.
Your jaw clenched. You resisted dragging Veronica away by her ear and having a word with her.
    Stop it. Stop it.
    “This is Freddy,” Freddie said.
“With a Y,” Roger added quickly.
“Yes, with a Y,” Freddie said dryly. “Roger’s new flame.”
“Hi,” Freddy said with a smile. Her teeth were very white. She lifted a well-manicured hand to fiddle with the silver chain around her neck.
You could see the discolouration on her knuckles. Well, at least you knew her tan wasn’t real. That was something. Wasn’t it?
No. It wasn’t. She looked incredible anyway. Didn’t even matter that she was wearing fake tan. What a stupid thing to think.
    You introduced yourself.
There was a pause where no one really knew what to say next.
“Hi, by the way,” John said.
Relieved, you gave him a smile. “Hi, John, how are you?”
“Not too bad. Do you want to find a chair?”
God bless John Deacon. “Let me help you,” Freddie said, and you both began wandering through the crowd together, knowing there was no way in hell you’d be able to find a chair.
“How are you?” Freddie asked. “Actually, sod the fucking chair, let’s get a drink.”
    “Sounds superb,” you said.
“Try again,” Freddie said when you’d gotten in line. “How are you?”
    “Fine,” you said. “And you?”
“Good, fine,” Freddie said. “Lonely. I want a boyfriend. Everyone else is in a godforsaken relationship, so I only think it’s reasonable. Look at me, the token lonely, single homosexual in a group of straight people. Right out of an early 2000s chick flick. I may as well start wearing skinny scarves and a vest and talk about how much I love shopping. Do you think I’m sassy enough?”
“Stop it,” you said. “If you start wearing skinny scarves, I’ll strangle you with one.”
“If I start wearing skinny scarves, I’d practically be begging you to,” Freddie muttered.
“I’m sorry you’re lonely,” you said. “I could be your wingwoman, if you like. We could go out together.”
Freddie gave you a smile. “Yeah, I’d like that,” he said. His eyes scanned the chalkboard, as did yours, but it was more habit than anything else. “What did you get up to during the break?”
“Slept,” you said, and Freddie chuckled, nodding in agreement.
    “Ate too much,” he added.
“Yep, that too,” you said with a laugh. “Never left the house.”
    “Except to buy more booze.”
    “Or take the bins out.”
    Freddie laughed. “Isn’t summer wonderful.”
“Oh, it’s just perfect,” you said, and it came out so bitter, with such a sneer in your tone, that Freddie cracked up. A few heads turned, but they usually did, with Freddie.
“Did you stay here or go home?” you asked.
“Both,” Freddie said. “Mostly here, though. Just wanted to see the family for a while, but I’m far more comfortable here.”
    You nodded.
“Did you talk to Brian and Roger much?” Freddie said.
    You shook your head. “No.”
    That was all.
“Well, shit,” Freddie said. “That’s all just completely fucked, then?”
“It’s fine,” you said. You reached the front of the line, and went to order. Freddie followed you.
You ordered a cider, then Freddie ordered a pint. “What do you think of Freddy with a Y?” Freddie asked as the bartender poured your drinks.
“I’ve barely met her,” you said. “Didn’t know she existed until Ron told me just before we left mine.”
“Jesus,” Freddie said. “You really haven’t spoken to them.”
“No,” you said. “And Roger doesn’t post much on social media, either, so. And Brian posts far too much, so I know way too much about him and Dani for my liking, which is wonderful.”
“I’m sorry,” Freddie said. “God, I’m sorry it’s all gone to shit, I really am. That’s miserable, darling.”
“It’s fine,” you said. The bartender set your drinks in front of you, and you and Freddie collected them, weaving your way back to the table.
“Did you… get around to dating much?” Freddie asked.
“Wasn’t in the mood,” you said.
    Freddie said nothing. Message received.
You arrived back at the booth. While you’d gotten a drink, you hadn’t solved the seating problem.
You bunched up next to Veronica. It wasn’t comfortable, but it wasn’t unbearable.
You met Brian’s eyes across the table. He gave you a warm smile. It hurt. You hated that it hurt. “I haven’t said hi yet,” he said, like you hadn’t just gone three months without seeing or speaking to each other. “How you going?”
“Good, good,” you said, and took a swig of cider. “You?”
“Yeah, great. Get up to much?”
    “Not really. Did you?”
“Not too much,” Brian said. “Dani and I took a little trip south. That was nice, wasn’t it, baby?”
“So nice,” Dani said with a cheeky, knowing little grin at Brian.
He shook his head at her, and she giggled, then reached up for a quick kiss.
You knew about the little trip south. Everybody knew about the little trip south. Brian had waxed poetry about it on Instagram for every single day they were away. “So lots of sex, then,” you said.
Veronica choked on her water, and Roger burst out laughing.
You hadn’t realised he’d been listening to the conversation.
Dani’s face was turning tomato-red, and she hid her face behind her hand. Brian managed a good-natured chuckle, albeit a slightly forced one, and you could tell he was rubbing Dani’s knee under the table.
“What, what was the joke?” Freddie said immediately.
“Nothing,” you said, and turned to Roger. “So, Freddy, with a Y, how did you and Roger meet?”
“Bumble,” Freddy said, unabashed. “About a month ago?”
    “Yeah, about that,” Roger said.
“Yeah, Ron said,” you said. “That’s nice.”
“So there’s…” Roger licked his bottom lip. “There’s no one you’ve got your eye on, then?”
“No,” you said, uncomfortable. Why would anyone want you? You were messy, you were too much. You were demanding. You were easily replaced.
You took a sip of cider. Stop.
It had been three months, for God’s sake. Three months of no contact, and still you were left with an ugly, twisted feeling in the pit of your stomach after everything that had happened.
None of it had even mattered. You’d always known it had had an expiration date. You were just…
    You hated feeling like this.
“Hey,” Veronica said suddenly, raising her glass of water. “Let’s make a toast, shall we? To the new year. To– to passing our classes, and to ramen, and to… fresh starts.”
Everyone raised their glasses, saying something along the lines of cheers, and began clinking their glasses together. You took a moment longer, but joined in.
Veronica met your eyes to clink her glass to yours. “Fresh starts,” she said with a small smile.
You couldn’t quite say it back, so you smiled and nodded, then took a sip of your cider.
You could feel Brian’s and Roger’s eyes on you. You pretended to be interested in something happening across the room.
God, you couldn’t wait for this chapter of your life to be nothing but a bad dream.

♬ - a friend/best friend memory
“Are you okay, Bakura?”
Ryou had been lingering in the classroom at the end of the day, unable to bring himself to go home. His apartment was quiet, empty- but he was used to that, and didn’t mind it. No, that wasn’t what’d been lingering on his mind. Something else was keeping him distracted.
“Hey, Bakura? Are you listening?”
He’d felt panic when he’d seen Mr. Karita back at school, terrified that the man would recognize him as the reason he’d slipped into a coma. But the gym teacher had been no different from how he usually acted, still cruel, but no horrid accusations or vicious words. Not that he didn’t deserve them, but....
“Hey! Earth to Ryou!”
“H-Huh?”
“You were spacing out- is everything ok?”
“O-Oh, yeah. I’m alright.”
He hadn’t even realized that he’d been spacing out enough to draw the attention of the gang, Yugi and Jounouchi standing in front of him trying to get his attention. He smiled, though it felt a bit forced, and simply tried to not focus on his still-bandaged hand.
“You’ve been zonin’ out ever since gym class.” Ryou was surprised that Jounouchi had noticed- it wasn’t like he held a low opinion of the boy, or anything like that, but he simply hadn’t thought anyone would pay attention. “If that jerk Karita said anything, you let me know, okay? It’s like he doesn’t even know who helped him get back to normal!”
“H-Haha... no, it’s not that, I promise. I’m alright.” He gave his best polite smile, trying to ignore the guilt that picked at his heart while his friend attempted to reassure him. Mr. Karita would have every reason to pick on him- he felt lucky enough just that the man hadn’t started threatening to cut his hair again. “I guess I’ve just been tired. A lot’s happened, and with my hand, it can be a bit difficult to fall asleep...”
The others both nodded and offered sympathetic smiles, and Ryou couldn’t help but feel worse. It wasn’t like he was lying to them, but he also... wasn’t telling the complete truth. Because he was scared, and he didn’t want to burden them with anything more after all the trouble he’d already caused.
Together the group left the school, with Ryou hanging slightly to the back while the others spoke. He didn’t want them to worry about him, didn’t want them to notice any of the anxiety that slipped through his face- so if he stayed just slightly out of view, it’d be better. Simpler. He couldn’t possibly be a burden on his friends.
“Oh- I just realized, I forgot something inside.”
Yugi’s sudden stop led to Ryou almost bumping into him, just barely managing to catch himself in time. The others all nodded, going on ahead at Yugi’s insistence, but Ryou went back with him. Not because he didn’t like the others, but just because... maybe if it was just Yugi, he could ask a couple questions. Try to get at least one thing off his mind. (Even if he failed, it wouldn’t be that big a deal- he’d never been that talkative anyways).
“If there’s something on your mind... I don’t mind talking. You’re our friend, Ryou. We trust you.”
That trust hurt, because it didn’t feel earned. He’d put them through a horrible experience, all because of the ring. They’d been so close to ending up another set of miniatures in his collection, of dolls with souls that could see and hear and feel but who couldn’t do anything but watch.
“I...” He bit at his lip, trying to ignore the pain in his chest and his hand. He hadn’t told any of them about what the ring had done, the way it’d dug itself into his skin like a parasite, as if it needed to suck at his blood to survive. The doctor at the hospital had been confused as to how he’d gotten the injuries, but he’d refused to respond- all that mattered was fixing them. “If Mr. Karita has woken up, then... I think... everyone else should’ve as well.”
Those weren’t the words that he’d planned on speaking, and by the looks of it, they weren’t what Yugi had expected him to say. Or maybe he had expected it, Ryou wouldn’t know.
“That’s good, right? All your old friends should be ok now.”
“I-It is, but... I...” He stopped walking, clutching his school bag a bit too tightly, trying to ignore the way his hand ached. “I... I can’t bring myself to try checking. Because... what if they’re still... unconscious? Or... what if they’re... if they’re...”
Dead.
He couldn’t even bring himself to say the word, but it haunted his mind. He’d died, briefly- he couldn’t remember much other than a warmth and a light, and the faintest echoes of those achingly familiar voices gently telling him that this wasn’t his time, and that he had to go back. He couldn’t stay with them yet, no matter how much he missed them.
“Well... Mr. Karita was okay, right? So I’m sure they must be too!”
“But he was only really out for a day, Yugi. For some of them, it’s been... it’s been so much longer. And... and even if they’re alive, they’ve lost so much time...”
He was a thief. He’d stolen their time, the most precious thing a person could have while alive. Even if it hadn’t been him- he’d befriended them. He’d made a selfish wish.
“Ryou. You can’t blame yourself for what the spirit did, okay?”
His friend wasn’t someone that Ryou would’ve ever called intimidating, but his stare had an intense determination that he felt like he couldn’t escape from. It was a bit like the other Yugi, the spirit of the puzzle- but softer, still very much belonging only to Yugi.
“I... I know it was him, but... but still...”
“You have to have faith in yourself. You didn’t do any of those things. You did everything you could to help us- you would never do things like that.”
He wanted to treat the words like shallow platitudes, tell himself that Yugi couldn’t really know him, because they hardly knew each other, but the shorter boy was hard to ignore. It was the same reason they’d even become friends in the first place- he seemed like he just wasn’t the sort of person who could ignore when another person was hurting. It was admirable, even if Ryou found it... a bit foolish. When it came to him, anyways. He was just bad luck.
He told himself that, and he told himself that, and yet he felt like he wanted to believe Yugi- and all of his friends- regardless of that.
Ryou changed the topic after that, switching to talk about that card game that’d been getting popular in the states recently. Yugi said he’d actually played before, a couple times now- Duel Monsters, it was called now. He’d have to make a deck of his own someday, and maybe he could show it to Yugi and Jounouchi.
When he finally got back home to his apartment, he let out a heavy sigh. Talking to Yugi had helped, and he really did believe that his friends would be there for him if he asked, but... he couldn’t ask them for help with this. He couldn’t burden them with this, not this particular thing.
There was a landline phone in his apartment, at his father’s insistence. He tended to only use it when talking with his father, or when he had to do important things- at current, his hands rested over a small book of numbers and names, frowning.
You have to do this. You have to do this.
He scanned until he saw one of the names on his internal list- Hayato. One of the boys he’d been friends with at his previous school. The last person to go into a coma before transferring. He still didn’t remember how it’d happened- maybe for the better- but it had been the last straw then, he’d been about to break.
Cursed. Cursed. It hadn’t mattered how many times he’d changed schools. Didn’t matter how far he’d moved from his father. He’d never lasted more than a year at any school since he’d gotten the ring. Sometimes it was his father’s work that made them move, other times it was the ring. But the result was always the same.
His fingers hovered above the buttons on the phone, paralyzed by fear. What if he hadn’t woken up? What if they were all still unconscious? And... if he had woken up, what’d happened? Did all of them hate him? They should’ve, after what he’d- the spirit- had done.
Don’t think about it. Just call. Just call, Ryou.
He’d punched in the number and picked up the receiver before he could give himself time to doubt himself once more, listening to the mechanical tones as the line rang. Once, twice, three times. He’d been about to give up, expecting it to go to voicemail- but instead a woman’s voice came on the line.
“A-Ah, I....”
He startled at her brief introduction, a response which only seemed to make the woman confused.
“Is this a prank call?”
“N-No, Ma’am. I just...” He forced himself to take a deep breath, steadying his nerves. “I-I’m... Ryou Bakura. I’m a... friend of Hayato’s. I... wanted to ask about him... if he’s doing alright....”
The line went quiet for a moment, and Ryou started to wonder if she was going to hang up on him. He wouldn’t blame her- he was the reason her kid had ended up in a coma.
“Actually, he... he just woke up yesterday.” There was a mix of emotions in her voice that Ryou couldn’t fully understand, but the relief and exhaustion were clear. “Would you like to speak with him? I can give you his cell’s number. I’m sure he’d be overjoyed to speak with his friends- he’s still in the hospital for now.”
“I-I... yes, that would be... that would be nice. Thank you.”
She listed it out, and he copied it down dutifully, then they exchanged some quick goodbyes and left Ryou once more alone in a silent apartment. But... he was awake. One friend, at least, was awake.
Then surely, the rest had to be...
He wasn’t able to think long enough to discourage himself from calling his friend’s cell, punching in the number and waiting, praying that he would pick up. He only had to wait for one ring this time, before a voice that felt too familiar came on the line. It’d been a while now, and yet it felt as if the’d only spoken yesterday.
“Yo, this’s Hayato! Who’s there?”
“H-Hi, um... it’s Ryou...”
“Ryou?!” He was loud enough that Ryou had to hold the phone away from his ear, but he wasn’t angry. He sounded surprised, and maybe even a bit excited- but not mad. “Where’d you go, man?! I was talking with our classmates- they said you just up and vanished!”
“I-I... I transferred schools...”
“At the end of the year? That’s a bummer, dude. Your dad really never lets you catch a break, huh?”
There was a noise from the other end, the sounds of voices and surprise, and suddenly there were two more people talking.
“Ryou! You’re alright! We were so worried about you- Ai looked like she was gonna cry when she heard you weren’t at school anymore!”
“K-Kaito, shut up!”
“Ha! You’re blushing! You’re totally embarrassed!”
“Anyways,” Hayato had taken the phone back, apparently, “nobody’s really sure what happened, but all of us just... woke up! The doctors aren’t letting us go yet, just in case- but I haven’t felt this good in ages.”
“Y-You... all of you... y-you’re really... okay?”
“Yeah!”
It was like a floodgate broke- Ryou was crying into the receiver, trying and failing to keep his composure as his friends joked around as if he was still right there, as if nothing bad had ever happened.
They spoke for a while after that, Ryou telling them about Domino high and Domino City and what it’d been like since his move, and all of them talking about the gossip that their classmates had shared with them already in the short time since they’d woken up.
Ryou didn’t know if things would ever really be normal- and he couldn’t bring himself to contact more people, to check on every person because he knew that not everyone could be so happy, and not everyone would want to talk to him. And that was fine- they didn’t owe him that.
But his friends had woken up. They were awake. Even if they drifted apart, they were awake, and that was so much better than having “friends forever” if they were stuck in lead figurines, unable to do anything. And all of it, all of this, was thanks to Yugi and his- Ryou’s too- friends.
For the next week, Ryou spent his time after school working on something, a project that kept his mind busy while he settled into a life without the ring, without the blackouts and fear. it was something he was proud of, and even if working on it made his hand ache after an hour or two, it was worth it.
“There’s something that I want to show all of you.”
He said it with a smile, a genuine smile, as he held a small covered box in front of him. The gang gathered around a desk, curiously trying to inspect it- when he took the cover off, revealing the diorama he’d been working on.
“I made it myself... it’s a diorama of our adventure- a symbol of our friendship.”
He had friends now, friends whom he would never betray, and who he hoped would never betray him. No matter what, he’d do whatever he could to protect all of them, so that he wouldn’t ever lose a friend again.

1030
1. What did you do on the last nice weather day? I’m guessing ‘nice’ here universally means sunny and fair, even though that isn’t my weather of choice. But that said, yesterday I just stayed indoors and caught up on rest by binge-watching Friends, which I haven’t done in a while. I also ordered another embroidery kit online since my first kit, which I had mostly used as a trial since I’ve never done one before, has since run out of the given floss.
2. What do you love the most about your work? I work in an agency, so I’m not forced to do PR under just one company which I think would get boring for me pretty quickly. With the nature of my work, it’s fun working with many different brands/companies at one time because I get to be exposed to and learn about different industries, and I’m also challenged to come up with campaigns that would best fit the different groups that we work with which is always fun. Also, PR is a great way to keep up with the trends and always remain hip because I always know about upcoming campaigns or promos before they’re even unveiled to the public, lol.
3. What do you think about what is going on in the world today? I think wealthy people and big corporations are a crucial, if not the main, root of the world’s problems and it’s frustrating that the task of mitigating those issues is always delegated to everyone below them.
4. What is your favorite way to work out? By not doing so, hahaha.
5. What motivates you? I don’t know if anything has been lately. I’ve been taking life slowly and easily these days and I’m allowing myself to just go through the motions as I digest all these big adjustments currently going on in my life. For now I’m not putting any pressure on myself to be motivated to do anything big. I’m still a little overwhelmed with everything as it is.
...where’s #6?
7. What is something people do that drives you crazy? When people need something from you so they message you, but do unnecessary small talk before asking for a favor. The fact that they need my help does not bother me; the fact that they are only talking to me because they need something from me does not bother me. It’s the small talk that irks me. I’ll be ready to help anybody at any time and it doesn’t matter how long it’s been since we’ve spoken – but just go ahead and ask for the damn thing and don’t waste my time trying to sound like you care about what’s going on in my life.
8. What are some things on your bucket list? Go to Wrestlemania, travel with my own funds, have my own place, have kids.
9. What are some of your deal breakers in a relationship? Do I even have any? Gab dropped so many red flags in our relationship that should have been dealbreakers and my dumb, ever-forgiving ass always saw past them. I think the thing with me is that I think I have a list of dealbreakers, but when actually confronted with them I’m too afraid to speak out about it, so I just forgive and forget and eventually they just stop being dealbreakers. I have to work on that.
10. What do you never leave your house without? My top three are phone, keys, wallet. And of course, as a given – a face mask and face shield.
11. What was your most memorable vacation? Sagada and Singapore/Malaysia, since that was my first trip abroad.
12. Do you have any phobias? Needles and fire.
13. What is your favorite ethnic food? Indian, Thai, Indonesian, and Korean. 14. I love Italian/Thai etc. Would you like to go to my favorite place sometime? I love both, though I like Thai a tad bit more. And yessss, I’m always open to anyone’s recommendations so long as it’s got something to do with food.
15. What TV shows have you binged lately? I’ve been rewatching Friends again and I’m in between seasons 5–7, which I believe to be the show’s peak. Currently, I’m several episodes away from the Ross/Elizabeth storyline and Chandler’s proposal.
16. Send me a funny meme that you shared recently. I haven’t been active on social media, so I haven’t seen any new memes lately. I hate missing out.
17. What do you hate about technology? This is more nitpickiness on my end than anything else, but battery power. I hate being constantly cautious over my gadget running out of power or dying on me especially when I’m out. I often find myself wishing for technology to evolve to the point that we won’t need batteries or to charge stuff anymore, which idek if it’s even possible haha.
18. What sites do you find yourself visiting the most? YouTube, by a mile.
19. Do you have any favorite apps? Again, YouTube. I also like going through Reddit at the end of the day.
20. What is the best part of your day? Any point I don’t find myself feeling miserable.
21. What time period would you like to visit the most, if you could time travel? 70′s punk/rock scene, maybe? < Ooh, this is a good one. Also, late 90s Attitude Era-era WWF/E. And whenever Pompeii was around.
22. What scents do you really enjoy? (a certain flower, cut grass, fireplace, perfume) Bakeries, a newly-cleaned hotel room, coffee shops.
23. What is something that you are terrible at? Giving and following directions, drawing, and cooking.
24. What are some favorites on your playlist right now? Because I mentioned The Japanese House on a survey last night, I am ALL over Saw You In A Dream again. Seriously, god-tier. One of my favorites ever. Outside of that, haven’t been listening to music lately because I’m still sad; but I might find myself back on Spotify soon. As much as I haven’t been tuning into music, I do miss it.
25. What comedy movie is your favorite? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Also, a bit of a garbage choice but White Chicks.
26. Have you ever meditated? No. I don’t think I have the patience/required attention span for it.
27. What is your dream job? I wanted to be in PR. I currently work at an agency which is my dream for now so yay for me achieving that, but like I’ve said before it would be such a dream come true if I can come work for WWE, my dream company, in any capacity. Getting to work for their in-house PR team would be the perfect icing on the cake.
28. What comes to mind when you think of a great moment in your life? Being in a relationship, and how much I miss that feeling. Now that I’ve experienced both singlehood and having an SO, I can definitely decide that I don’t particularly enjoy being by myself.
29. What do you miss the most about college? The independence I learned to gain. My campus was such a freeing environment and it allowed me to grow so much, to wear whatever I want, to join whatever protest or rally was going on, to meet new people, to hear different perspectives from my classmates. I miss being there.
30. Whenever you text it makes me smile! ???
31. What are you planning this weekend? My weekend is nearly over, actually...for the remaining 10 hours and 20 minutes of it, I willllll probably just watch a bunch of wrestling and maybe find something to watch on Netflix just so that I have something interesting to share for the weekly check-in tomorrow with the team.
32. Who is your favorite band? Paramore, but you knew that already.
33. How do you like to spend your free time? If I manage to find a few free minutes while at work, I gobble that shit up by lying in bed and finding a video to watch. On weekends I like doing embroidery, taking surveys, maybe even find a black hole of articles to read on Wikipedia. I’m also looking forward to playing video games once I’ve finally bought the ones I’ve been eyeing to get.
34. What do you like about springtime? I don’t know. I can’t relate, we don’t have that season.
35. Is your personality similar to anyone in your family? I’m most similar with my mom, but I share traits with my dad as well.
36. How have you handled having to stay in? It was sucky at first, but after eight months you kinda get used to it and just make the most out of things you can do only at home.
37. Are you able to work at home? Yeah, we’re all on a WFH set-up right now.
38. How would your friends describe you? The most popular opinion would probably be ‘shy.’
39. Did you ever take a really big risk? Sure.
40. What do you want to be known or remembered for? Anything but negatively.

Amiya in Bedivere’s interlude
Tumblr media
I recently played his interlude again and again because it’s so sweet, this boy deserves the world. Also, in his interlude, he self-depreciate himself so I wanna insert myself that he isn’t like this.
(yeah, i tried but you get the idea) and the B-team is mentioned but not really the spotlight
Interlude began when Amiya was in her room busy with some paper works and was watching videos on her laptop when Bedivere entered greeting her, “Good morning, Amiya. What do you have planned today?” Amiya looked at him, kinda perplexed, “I was busy, but I might need a break” she replied, “then I shall accompany you, no matter your destination”
“Hmm. Maybe some place where I can breath a fresh air”
“Rayshifting? Perhaps training in the simulator?”
“I have done that with Rhion and Chiyo the other day, thank you Bedivere” Amiya acknowledged, her eyes still on the computer, listening to a video commentary of some memes, which she does while doing her paperwork whilst knowing she will add words from the video if she wasn’t paying extreme attention.
“Well, I am here on behalf of Miss Mash today---”
“Oh, it’s fine, I appreciate her looking after not only me but also everyone else.” she understood as she shifted a bit and faced him, “so..”
“I will try my very best to aid you then” Amiya smiled and muttered a thank you before shifting her position to stand up and stretch herself after hours of sitting down and crouching, facing the screen and the notes.
“Now that you mention it---” she forgot her medical check, Amiya remembered how her welfare is tied with her thaumaturgy, the more she draws from it, the more she feels sluggish or even collapse from a single blast from her staff she delivered, even Rhion mentioned she has to be careful or equip herself with a Mystic Code to not fall back.
Bedivere explains she was having her medical check and has to remain in the exam room all day.
“Medical checks are important, Amiya, you’re aware that Chaldea is isolated from the rest of the world,” he continued, and is located in an extreme environment”
“I know, I know...” her words trailed as she let out a long sigh, arching her neck up.
“Our bodies and minds are under incredible pressure, we must always be aware of this, understand, Amiya”
“Yeah... you sound like my mother” she chuckled but he continued on despite her comment.
“and because you have exceptional talent, I don’t want you to crack under pressure especially if you have a frail body”.
“So please take care of yourself as the flames we are facing and the cold, uncaring environment surrounding Chaldea are quite different in nature and said to be exceptionally difficult.”
“That’s the challenge we are facing right now, Me, you, the staff here” she shrugged, “as someone who intended to be an intern now is tangled with these threads, I have slight mixed feelings” Amiya stated.
“And as such, frequent checkups are of critical importance here Amiya”
“I-is this the reason why you’re here to pick me up? I am going later. But okay, thanks”
She was thankful it was Bedivere who came to check up on her, she doesn’t have anything against when Mashu or Chiyo does, as long as it wasn’t Wilhelmina since she drags her out of her room when she doesn’t respond the third time, that happens so bad, even Bedivere saw it.
“Permit me to remind you once more: I am a substitute for Miss Mash today, as such, please ask me for anything, I am your attendant, your butler, I am your servant in every possible sense of the word”
“Ah, um, okay, by the way, where’s Chiyo?” Amiya interrupted as he shortly finishes.
“I believe she was with Lady Marie and D’Eon, they must be having a tea, would you like to join them?”
“Hmmm, maybe some other time, she might be replenishing herself today and deserves to take a breather.”
“I see, since you trained in the simulator the day before, maybe observing and monitoring the remnants from the Singularities would be appropriate as well.”
“Maybe, but I am off duty with that, besides, Wilhelmina and Rene are doing that as of right now”
“Hmm...”
“Battling to gain something is what will lead to further growth for you, Master”
“Huh...I don’t know much about that”
“Battles for the sake of the Grand Order”
“...”
“Or rather...” he continued on, eventually these battles will wear her, or anyone in the team down. Psyche, Soul, in modern times, Nerves.
“Heh, modern, it’s medical but whatever” she retorted
Bedivere paused for a bit
“There is something that crossed my mind, Amiya”
“What is it?”
“Normally, I wouldn’t dare mention something like this to other, but in your particular case...”
“I’m sure HE would be happy about it, without a doubt since he is that kind of knight.”
“Hmmm. He...”
“I think you must be referring to Bird boy.. Tristan?”
“Yes, my comrade, the man who is the epitome of freedom. And also the comment, Bird boy...?”
“What of it?”
“When you say he is the epitome of freedom, the first thing that comes to my mind is birds, they fly freely...”
“You have good analogy, I’m impressed by that. Anyways, I occasionally would accompany him and believe it is a wonderful place to relax. But please, keep that to yourself.”
Relax huh, never heard that word in a million years but I am overreacting Amiya thought as she spaces a bit.
“The Rec room is what you’re referring to”
He laughs and asked her if it is where she think it is, Amiya nodded and shrugged, “Chiyo, Rhion and I hang out there, usually we pick meadow alps like the swiss alps where we sing and copy scenes from the Sound of Music”
“Ah I see, so you seem to know it as well, let’s head over there right away, I will leave a note for Sir Tristan and perhaps, Sir Rhion?”
“Rhion is likely asleep right now, so it’s just us”
“Alright, let’s go”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two arrived in the simulator, instead of a the Swiss alps she was so familiar with. It was completely different.
“The sea...”
“You’re less enthused than I expected, my apologies. I must reflect on my presentation”
Amiya shook her head, “n-no, no it’s fine. It’s alright. It’s good to take a breather somewhere else” her tone has a small bit of upset as if she was expecting something the long time only it didn’t leave up to her expectations.
“Ah, I’m glad you like it, but still it doesn’t make it any less better on my part. I will further reflect on my actions regardless.”
A simulator, a virtual creation of an environment of the outside world. They aren’t outside Chaldea and it would be a bit troubling if they went out since the endless winter is absolutely unforgiving Heroic Spirits or humans alike.
“The sea gives me a sense of peace. I hope it goes the same way for you, Master”
“Mm”
“Actually, I was initially skeptical about whether or not this would work. I accompanied Sir Tristan to watch him go fishing and listening to him ranting that was nothing but difficult to understand..”
“Haha, I see you take yourself as Tristan’s punching bag with his rants huh” Amiya mused.
“There was sincerely nothing to do except spending time just watching the sky and the sea. But surprisingly, doing so felt peaceful, or rather, calming to me”
“Ah, I see. So we are complete opposites but not really”
“Complete opposites?”
“Mhm, when you say the watching the sky and the sea is calming for you. I’d felt the same way except, I would watch the sky while lying down in the flowery meadow. Both is relaxing to us”
Bedivere chuckled and Amiya leaned closer to him, “maybe sometime, I’d bring you there someday where we’ll experience it together”.
The two looked to the sea until he breaks the silence.
“Amiya”
“Hm?”
“...Have I..overstepped my boundaries?” his tone. It was as if someone was confessing their crimes but at the same time, there was a tone of remorse and genuine solemnity.  “No, it’s fine. It’s nice to relax sometime and take a break away from all these..thank you, Bedivere”
“I should be the one thanking you, Master.”
“Please call me Amiya, I think I find the term Master a bit... uncomfortable”
“Alright, Amiya”
Amiya smiled and just stretched herself once again, trying to feel herself and the environment and slightly sides to his shoulder.
“Would you like to try night fishing?”
“Night fishing?”
“Yes, did you know Amiya, Sir Tristan uses his Failnaught so skillfully to catch a many great fish..”
“Oh, but how do we get fishing gear then? Shouldn’t we entered the data before entering? I didn’t expect this to happen, I’m so sorry..”
“Ah, don’t apologize, Amiya. I requested Miss Da Vinci’s help on that front.” He then entered a few buttons on the multipurpose window whilst she waited.
“...Now I equip the extra item and we’re all set” he said. “Well, I’m sure there are other ways to do so but I don’t have much experience with the simulator”
“I think it’s enough, there are two of them and just teach me how to fish, if it’s alright with you, it’s been a while since I’ve fished and I completely forgot the basics”
After a few exchange with eachother, Bedivere guided the milk-haired girl, “the bait is already on the hook, so please cast it to the sea with all your strength, Amiya.”
“Eeyyy!” Amiya stood up, arching her back to further cast it away and hearing a small sound on the water surface. “Ah, I think it landed”
“Such bold and brazen movement, amazing!”
“Ahaha, it’s not that special Bedi” she appealed and looked at the sea again to detect any movement from the bait.
“But it’s really wonderful, did you any by chance tried fishing before?”
“As a child yeah, but it ended up so badly that I accidentally threw my teddy bear instead of the fishing line.” Recalling that said memory really takes her back where she was in a small lake with a family gathering, at such a young age of seven, she accidentally threw her bear and her having a total meltdown, thankfully it was recovered but the dress the bear was wearing was ruined. Looking back at it, it was so embarrassing.
“Ah, is that why you take all your energy in casting the fishing line since you’re not holding anything besides that right?”
“You read me like a book, Bedivere” she then looked back at the sea, smelling the salty, calming atmosphere whilst holding the fishing pole. Bedivere said he will look out at the front so there’ll be nothing to worry about.
Amiya laid back again and let out a sigh before putting her hand on her nape, rubbing it to release the tension.
“...This is something that I’ve never said before...”
“..?”
“Nor did Tristan say this...but at times, I find myself thinking this:
Tristan was torn between the two Iseults. And his fate led him to lose his life by the water. Or rather, his soul”
“Ah..” she remembered, she knew the story, it was how Tristan was poisoned and his last request was to see the Iseult he loved, but the other Iseult who was his wife lied to him about the sails being black instead of white.
Poor thing..
“Perhaps that is why he cannot be apart from the water. Even now, he could be waiting for that ship with the shining, pale white sail...” Amiya didn’t say anything but was about to open her mouth to say something when she suddenly jolted
“ha!”
“Something’s biting! It’s splashing. It must be a very big one..! It;s like Sir Kay swimming amongst the fishes!” the last part almost made Amiya chuckle but she is reeling back with her might, almost panicking.
“Almost there! The tug tho!”
“It could be a red snapper, mackerel, or even a tuna!”
“It could be all three!”
“Alright, let’s reel it in, Amiya! And just like humans take pictures of the fish to record their greatest catches, we both can capture its data and show it to Miss Mash and Sir Tristan!”
“Add Chiyo and Rhion to the list!” she beamed
“It;s sure to make them smile!”
“Now reeeeeeel!” Amiya reeled with all her might with the help of Bedivere, her back was against his chest, close too close! She isn’t into those, yet and it’s making her cheeks burn
“Haa, it’s so big! The fish just leaped out of the sea” never in her life had she seen a fish so heavy and big.
Amiya walked closer to examine it until Bedivere held her back
“Wait..” the creature landed with a heavy crash, apparently it is a weird looking....fish?
“The fish we caught is...actually, not a fish.....”
The creature roared an eerily screech as it further lunged into the two. “Ahhh! T-that’s an enemy!”
“Oh, I’m so embarrassed...I must have made some kind of mistake when I am setting the system up, Doing something one is accustomed to can cause such trouble.. I pulled an all-nighter studying the manual...but I am no good at learning new things...”
“Stop the lamentation first Bedivere, for now, we need to get rid of this thing!” Amiya wasn’t able to bring her staff with her but she could put up small barriers to keep the enemy in place.
“Yes, Amiya, your commands! I am prepared to make amends for my misconduct, Or, I am prepared to accept whatever punishment you deemed fitting, but first we have an enemy to fight!”
His demeanor changed as he prepares to fight the enemy lunging forward
“I swear by my Airgetlam that I will dispose of this monster immediately!”
“Let’s go, Bedivere!”
SWITCH ON - AIRGETLAM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEAD END - AIRGETLAM
Bedivere slashed off the enemy to two before dying. Returning to normal, Amiya let out a deep breath, that was hell of a fight but it’s done.
“...Please allow me to apologize once more. Even though it was only in the simulator, my most important job is to keep you safe, you being in danger clearly meant I failed my duty as a Knight. My efforts were fruitless once again, I apologize Amiya”
“It is alright, Bedivere, as long as you’re fine, it doesn’t matter. I am not mad to begin with” she earnestly acknowledge and patted his head.
He blushed as she patted his head, “Ah, Thank you so much, I am  undeserving of such kindness.
Amiya and Bedivere looked at the now dead creature before them.
“Now...it would be a waste to leave this, so let’s eat it”
“?!” did she process this correctly? Eldritch things are not her cup of tea so she was clearly caught off guard but then she lacks self-awareness, any point he would coerce her to eat this and it scared her.
“I have memories from my previous life. For instance, from Round Table analects, King Arthur, number eight: Food is all the same. Nutrition is nutrition, even monster meat!”
“Haa.....”
“Now, Amiya...repeat!”
“Ahhh” Amiya walked back, clearly freaked out. If anything, she’d rather starve than eat those kinds of things, she had seen people on videos eating live octopus, geoducks, raw meat, hell even a roasted alligator. Roasted. Alligator, one girl from China even had her face scarred by an octopus in her attempt to eat it alive. But luckily, this one is dead so the chance of it scarring their faces is zero.
Amiya backed away even more
“T-those videos, haaa” flashbacks of people grossly eating really stood out as she backs out further.
“What are you talking about, Amiya? Why are you backing away? Amiya? Amiya?”
(just imagine her face during the whole event after the battle)
youtube
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After running for quite sometime (not even long, just 10 minutes) and him after her.
“...Once again, my apologies. But now I’ve learned more about your food preferences”
“..sea grapes are something I actually like” she revealed. They aren’t as bad, but at least she could live with it than those Eldritch-type things, he is into.
“Ah, I’ll keep that in mind, in order for you to enjoy my dishes more in the future, I will continue to hone my skills” Amiya just nodded, tears and sweat are so visible and her expression seems like she’s simultaneously crying and laughing
“By the way...” she looked back as she wiped out her sweat with her handkerchief, “where are we?”
“The seaside we visited is Sir Tristan’s place of relaxation. Now we are at mine..” His expression softened as he walked past her. “It’s quite similar to a certain place in Britain”
“....A place of peace...well, admittedly this tranquil place is where I allow my mind to race. It is a place that helps me renew my resolve and reinvigorate my soul. So it may be a stretch to call this place a place of peace.”
“Oh. So like mine but in a different environment huh”
“Yes, as you mentioned, your place of relaxation along with miss Chiyo and Sir Rhion is the swiss alps.”
Huh, so he remembered, the smallest detail, something that you genuinely appreciated so much, everytime someone knew the teeny bit, their heart leaps with joy.
“Bedivere?”
“...” Amiya looked at him with concern, perhaps, her actions upset him earlier, “I’ll make it up to you what happened earlier. I’m sorry, I wasn’t educated in those types. I’ll promise to learn about them for sure.”
“No. It’s not about that, I was thinking of the past.”
“Huh?”
“Our Britain was a nation under constant threat of attack, never peaceful or stable...” He then explained that many fell victim to the chaos and he wasn’t able to save them. Then he told her about the Giant of Mont Saint-Michel. “A fearsome giant was wreaking havoc on the Mont Saint-Michel of Brittany”
Amiya carefully listened to him, her expression filled with soft curiosity like a child who wanted to see what her grandmother was knitting.  “...and kidnapped Princess Helena, the niece of the King of Brittany”. Helena. First thing that popped in her head when she heard the name was Caster Helena Blavatsky, though she didn’t want to sound disrespectful and just swallowed the thought. The atmosphere isn’t even a time for cracking jokes or a quip.
“Our King Arthur took Sir Kay and myself to hunt the giant down and rescue her..” His eyes lowered a bit but soon looked at her, “and on that quest...to be frank...I was of no help to the two of them. King Arthur and Sir Kay defeated the giant in a gruesome battle and brought some peace to Brittany.” Amiya’s expression slightly lit up, “and bam! It’s a finally happy ending right! At least you and your comrades brought peace” she chattered. But even her cheer isn’t helping.
“On the other hand, I...I could not save the princess.”
“Ah, so she...”
“Yes, by the time we arrived she has already been gone. I was too late, powerless as I am. All too little, too late. Princess Helena, known for her grace had her young and promising life plucked away, and we found only her pitiful corpse”
“Oh,” Amiya couldn’t believe what happened, she couldn’t imagine what guilt and pain he must’ve felt when he saw the once and beautiful, lovely princess, once filled with life and possibly cheeriness now snuffed out of her. It is something that reopened a painful memory in her past.
“I couldn’t save the people dear to me. First, Princess Helena. Then, the Battle of Camlann, my king...Arthur. I failed not once, but twice”
“...Bedivere”
“...This place..it reminds me of where Princess Helena drew her last breath. Every time I stand here, it reminds me...that I am a powerless knight...I am but a man who lost the two people he swore to protect”. Amiya grabbed both of his cheeks slapping it together causing him to snap out.
“That’s wrong Bedivere!” she asserted.
“Amiya?”
“Just because you can’t save people dear to you doesn’t make you a complete failure! Do you think Helena would be happy if you continue to depreciate yourself further? Do you think your King or your comrades would like it if you degrade yourself further?! Not only I find it absolutely repetitive and annoying but I couldn’t stand seeing you this way as your Master.” Amiya then lets go, “I’m sorry, I kinda went off”
She looked away, “you see when you mentioned Princess Helena and about her, there’s also a memory that I repressed for so long, I don’t even share it with close people like Mashu and Chiyo”.
Amiya then placed her index finger on her lips. “Please keep this a secret between us, Sir Bedivere”
“You have my word, Master..”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It started back in Junior year of high school, when a girl her age was introduced in her class, her name is Rika, but she was bound to a wheelchair and the desk beside her was empty, since she was beside it, the teacher assigned Amiya to aid the new student to the assigned desk. She didn’t think anything of it until she saw her one day on the garden alone, drawing. Without a doubt, Amiya approached Rika and asked what she was doing, drawing flowers, Rika stated that the flower’s beauty lasts temporarily and if she were to pluck it, then it will hasten its beauty and dies much faster, the least she can do is draw and keep an original image even if it is not as accurate. Amiya was interested and seeing how talented Rika was, she was curious what technique she used and even taught her how to mix colors, soon their friendship blossomed, Amiya who was a recluse became more open and willing to help, she never had any real friends even if she has, she does not consider them close. The two shared same interest with one another when it comes to history and their love for retro things. Their bond grew stronger as time passes, it came to a point where Rika needed to be hospitalized due to an illness slowly eating her life away, she was due in operation and wanted to spend her time with Amiya before her operation. In reality, Rika had no friends and her grandparents homeschooled her before going out to a real one, Rika’s first and only friend. Touched by this, Amiya encourages her that she will make it regardless and gave her a charm to remember her by once she enters the operating room. Amiya went home in hopes the surgery would be a success. Only for her to learn from her mother days later that Rika had died during the operation, but prior to that, she left a small gift and a letter to Amiya indicating how much she appreciated her and the fact she was very patient whenever Rika would ask her questions and never get mad or irritated nor does she feel pity just because she was bound and with that, she is also able to make friends through her while Amiya opens up to people at the same time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it wasn’t for Rika, I would’ve not made friends along the way...
“I just had to share that, after your telling about Princess Helena, I learned that we both share the same parallels,” Amiya said as she clasped both her hands on her chest. “It’s because I don’t want you to feel the burden alone...her last wish to me was I hope I’ll be able to live my without fear, and every time I recoil or hesitate, I think of her resiliency and how she is able to withstand any obstacles in her way...”
I was scared, I didn’t know where I was going nor what I am going to do until I met her... and when she was cruelly taken away from her grandparents, from me, from my newly-made friends.
I know she will not always be around to help me...
The least I can learn from her was to move forward despite everything...
“Bedivere, you are not powerless, you stayed loyal to your King until the very end. Even undergoing those trials just to return Excalibur to your King and you call yourself powerless? Those were the most daring and valiant task you did!”
He blushed, but she still continue
“In the end, we will face adversaries together, that is a way to keep moving forward. So please, for your King’s sake...don’t belittle yourself anymore..”
This warmth, her hands touched his cheeks, cupping them together. “Thank you Bedi...”
“Master, no, Amiya...those words...” So assuring, so gentle yet firm, it was as if she was sharing her pain with him which was the case. He wonders why she would give those words to someone like him, someone who doesn’t even deserved to be numbered among the Knights of the Round Table but now...
Bedivere knelt down in front of Amiya, “w-wait----”
“Master, even if I am a powerless man who does not deserve to be included among the Knights of the Round Table and the words you have expressed to me, and yet, because of that----nay, I shall offer you this vow, knowing that my manifestation here with you was truly a miracle...
I shall protect you, Amiya, who fights these brutal battles to defend humanity’s future.
No matter how powerful the enemies coming to our way, no, no matter how cruel the fate we face may be....
Your life...your soul...your heart...every single part of you.
I shall protect you till the very end..”
Amiya dove down in his kneeling height and wrapped her arms around him, her eyes are swelling now, tears are falling, tears of warmth, assurance, happiness or whatever it is, someone willing to protect her and, the feeling is mutual too, she also wanted to protect her brother, Chiyo, Mashu or anyone dear to her
“Thank you, sir Bedivere” she sobbed through gross crying. She had never cried this far aside from her friend’s death who turned her to be a caring, open individual she is today.
“....Yes, Amiya
I swear I will live up to your expectations..”
and with that, Amiya kissed him on the cheek causing him to blush deeply.

THE POSITIVE & NEGATIVE; Mun & Muse - Meme.
fill out & repost ♥ This meme definitely favors canons more, but I hope OC’s still can make it somehow work with their own lore, and lil’ fandom of friends & mutuals. Multi-Muses pick the muse you are the most invested in atm.
Tumblr media
My muse is:   canon / oc / au / canon-divergent / fandomless /
Is your character popular in the fandom?  YES / NO. in his own head maybe
Is your character considered hot™ in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. lol what fandom does jo have a fandom here???
Is your character considered strong in the fandom?  YES / NO / IDK. ???
Are they underrated?  YES / NO. / IDK. jo thinks he’s underrated does that count??
Were they relevant for the main story?  YES / NO.
Were they relevant for the main character?  YES / NO / THEY’RE THE PROTAG.
Are they widely known in their world?  YES / NO.
How’s their reputation?  GOOD / BAD / NEUTRAL.
How strictly do you follow canon?  — Jo is the master of his own story so yeah. I’m following my own canon and whatever I come up with to a T ( unless some good suggestions in writer’s workshops or even here come up! ). He is the main character of my limited series pilot that I hope to write soon called The Insomnia Trap.
SELL YOUR MUSE! Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  Jonathan has many sides to him. The child of mixed Latinx parents and the youngest of three kids, he has had a relatively normal life ( save for early childhood, when he killed his mother by “accident” - should’ve mentioned that! ) and his very long goth phase in middle/high school, but always deemed himself to be on the outskirts of society. Because he was aware from a young age that he was simultaneously unwanted and unplanned, Jonathan came out of his upbringing with the idea that he never should have existed. This planted in him a very nihilistic, misandrist, and generally flippant view of the world despite pursuing his dream to work in comics and cartoons. Though he was hungry for recognition and dreamed of a world not on Earth, he often found himself to be a ghost wandering the streets of town, looking in on the people having fun in their homes without understanding why they were happy. His insomnia developed when he in his teens, though he still had trouble sleeping as a child after seeing his mother’s mangled corpse at the bottom of the stairs - his doing, of course. Whether he lives with the guilt or not is up to you to decide; it’s my personal feeling that there is a part of him, the human part of him, that feels horrible about what he did. He feels monstrous for it, in fact. This is part of the reason why, if he gets extremely close to someone, he warns them that he’s not a good person; the shred of good left in him. But he also feels his “metamorphosis” into the nihilist that he is today was inevitable, given that he was never supposed to exist in the first place. It should be mentioned, of course, that this nasty cocktail of things has not only stressed his insomnia, but he eventually was pushed into going to a sleep clinic to get to the bottom of his problems once and for all. He only encountered an extremely traumatic lucid dream that forced him to confront his past head-on. He was unable to save his rotting humanity ( D., a small girl that looked like his character Deirdre ), and was eaten alive by The Other, a creature that looked like a younger version of himself and eventually absorbed him into itself. He awoke, now in what can only be described as a constant lucid dream in waking life. He encounters monsters and hallucinations from his dreamspace frequently, and will sometimes see D.’s forest crop up in his backyard. To this day, he still believes D. is alive and well - and, of course, that the object of his obsession, the one person who ever understood him in his point of view, Annie Kaye, is going to one day return to him as he’s always dreamed. Sadly, she could want nothing less to do with his sorry ass.
Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —   Around the time that The Insomnia Trap was simply going to be a screenplay, I workshopped it every few weeks in my senior Screenwriting class in undergraduate school. The overwhelming response I got was that Jonathan was abhorrent, creepy, and the question a lot of people had was why we were following him versus Adri, his ex girlfriend who was documenting his struggles with insomnia. My only answer to this is that is the point - you aren’t supposed to necessarily like him, I instead invite you to understand why he does the things he does. I’m asking you to do something you don’t like, something that makes you uncomfortable, maybe. I don’t believe entertainment in any capacity should be forced to be all about how “great” a person someone is. He’s a horrible person you can observe at a safe distance, and pick apart - a real puzzle who has his nasty qualities and his strangely good qualities mixed into one. I’m not asking you to forgive him, either. I’m asking you to see him for what he is and judge him for yourself. Jonathan is a gigantic mess of things - he’s deeply traumatized, but has chosen to live a life where he’s given in to his narcissism and self-importance, and he’s deeply hurt many people in his life - the most obvious being Annie, whom he feels he “deserves” after suffering so much in his life ( sure... ). He is in many ways a deeply unlikable character, and I wrote him keeping this in mind. That said, he has his better qualities, though they’re few and far between, that I think can keep him human in the eyes of the audience ( his love of animals, guilt towards his mother’s death, his intense self hatred, his genuine love for his nieces and nephews and for children in general, etc. ). Since he’s the protagonist of The Insomnia Trap, I can only hope that he is a complex and interesting enough character to follow for audiences if/when the limited series gets picked up!
What inspired you to rp your muse?  — Jonathan is based off of a very long personal experience I had, and I’ve always been fascinated by intense psychological horror. The two things came together, at first, when I was 12 and simply evolved from there. Originally, the project was going to be an animated flash movie that was divided into parts - but that of course never happened, I was too young and too impatient to ever do that. Over time, I ended up focusing Jonathan’s character, and he first appeared in high school - sophomore year, actually, in a different context. He’s been in development for a very long time, in other words, and I grew fascinated with a variety of different concepts over the years that got incorporated into his story ( doppelgangers, lucid dreaming, revenge, obsession, tragic protagonists, etc. )! He is one of the most intimate characters I’ve ever created, and I love him to death.
What keeps your inspiration going?  —  Music is a big one, there are specific songs I want to get the rights to use in the project if it ever gets made, and that really helps keep me focused on this blog and develop Jonathan further. Also, threading with my fellow muns and seeing how Jo evolves over time. What’s he capable of? Can he change? Is he capable of change, or is he afraid of it? These are questions that are asked with each character he interacts with, and I sincerely live for it. Also, drawing helps me out a lot too - maybe you’ll see The Insomnia Trap in webcomic form soon... just a thought!
Some more personal questions for the mun.
Give your mutuals some insight about the way you are in some matters, which could lead them to get more comfortable with you or perhaps not.
Do you think you give your character justice?  YES / NO / no idea honestly lmao
Do you frequently write headcanons?  YES / NO / depends!
Do you sometimes write drabbles?  YES - I also draw them! / NO, I HATE DRABBLES.
Do you think a lot about your Muse during the day? YES! / NO.
Are you confident in your portrayal?   YES / NO / sorta
Are you confident in your writing?  YES / HAHA NO.
Are you a sensitive person?  YES / NO. / though i can handle critique, film school definitely hardens you to that!
Do you accept criticism well about your portrayal?  —  I do. I’ve been explicitly told Jonathan is disgusting and totally unlikable by people to my face, and I have made leaps and strides to prevent my portrayal from going completely in the “this person is deplorable” category that was tempting to head towards. It’s easy to explore someone’s bad side rather than explore their good side, which I can forget about with him. That said, critique really does help me develop my writing further, and I desperately need it even if it can be hard to hear sometimes!
Do you like questions, which help you explore your character?  —  I love questions. If people ask me questions, I do my best to answer no matter what they may be. They can be challenging sometimes, but that’s what makes it so fun!
If someone disagrees to a headcanon of yours, do you want to know why?  —  Sure, I’m happy to hear what people have to say. I may not agree with it, but hearing different perspectives is so important in my point of view.
If someone disagrees with your portrayal, how would you take it?  —  As well as I could. It can be frustrating, but everyone’s tastes are different, so I don’t really take it personally and move on. I’m really here to do what I want to do in the end, as the rest of us are, so I try to prioritize that over any negative feelings I might have.
If someone really hates your character, how do you take it?  —  Again, I just let it be. I’m used to people not really understanding Jonathan or not caring for him while understanding him, and that’s fine! Everyone has their preferences for what they like in leading characters or just characters in general. He is a triggering character with very triggering themes, and I’m writing him from a very prolonged experience I had ( and it’s very cathartic ) so I can understand why people may not want to engage with him or with me. I’m perfectly fine with it and invite people to put themselves first, and I move on like I mentioned in the above question.
Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors?  —  Yes! Please go for it. I literally do not proof my replies before I post them half the time so feel free to let me know if I misuse words or put commas/colons/semicolons or whatever out of place.
Do you think you are easy going as a mun?   — I think so! I try to be open and inviting to everyone I speak to here, and always encourage people to come talk to me if they’d like to. No pressure though! Roleplay is for fun, and it shouldn’t be anxiety inducing or any kind of work - do things at your own pace here, that’s what I say ( though I’m trying to follow my own advice! ).
That’s about it, congrats for filling out!

My top 10 Powerpuff Girls episodes
(PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WAS WRITTEN BACK IN NOVEMBER SO SOME OF THIS IS A LITTLE OUTDATED SO WE’RE NEARLY INTO FEBRUARY...ABOUT TIME I FINISH THIS DAMN REVIEW!) For some reason, @princess-peachie‘s love for PPG made me want to do this too haha!  Can you believe that The Powerpuff Girls -one of the greatest Cartoon Network shows- has turned twenty? I know it's a little late but I get such great fond memories watching this as a little kid. The Powerpuff Girls was a spunky, energetic, entertaining, action packed, heartwarming and funny show. I indulged myself into watching this whenever I could and I always looked forward to it. It didn't matter if I saw the same episodes repeated again and again, The Powerpuff Girls would never shy away on putting a smile on my face. I LOVED this cartoon, it’s pretty special to me because it came out on the 18th November 1998 (my 10th birthday),  at the time, we didn’t have access to Cartoon Network so I wasn’t aware of this show until early next year. My first glimpse of the Powerpuff Girls was a mention and a brief clip shown of the girls flying and staring at the camera during a line up of Cartoons showing at the time. I actually got curious straight away and had no idea whenever I’d get the time to finally watch it.
Finally one evening after 2 Stupid Dogs finished, The Powerpuff Girls was announced next and this finally gave me a chance to watch it in peace. I was alone in the living room and I quietly sat there like ...well a kid, waiting, I was excited, I would finally get to watch this show after trying to.
Unlike most Cartoon Network shows in which it took me a while to get into such as Ed, Edd n Eddy, I already found myself smiling to myself and even quietly laughing. If I can remember correctly, the first episodes I got to watch fully for the first time were “Fuzzy Logic” and “Tough Love”. I don’t know why but somehow I knew I was really going to enjoy this show more than I’d expect. The Powerpuff Girls isn’t JUST your average typical cutesy show starring three female leads. It has more than that, it had action, it had a great stories, it had great adventure, it had great voice acting, speed, pizzazz and most of all…IT was actually very funny! Craig McCracken had come a long way since making these characters onto a small card he drew, to his own animated shorts to then one of the most iconic and important shows Cartoon Network had ever put onto their channel.
I loved it more for what it produced, I really liked how it pulls your audience in thinking it’s a cutesy girly show with all rainbows and giggles, but really, it’s a cartoon that captivates the audience with it’s humor, voice acting, soundtrack, atmosphere and even the sneaky pop cultural references and of course: adult humor. I would constantly tape the show whenever I could and when it came to those memorable ones, I KNEW I’d enjoy them again after more than one watch. There was something about this show that really appealed to me and sometimes I couldn’t quite lay a finger on it. When I first watched this show, I was glad I had instantly become a fan because this was one of those shows that I got into and enjoyed before anyone else did in the household. I’m glad it wasn’t just a girly girl’s show. I was happy that the main heroes were unique in appearence and seemed all sweet innocent looking kids which do nothing other than fighting crime, play around and act like little kids. I think what grabbed male audience’s attention more were the villains and I can see why. They were all funny, engaging and their use of dialogue and voice acting were terrific. All well done to a tee!
When you’ve got voice talents such as Tom Kane, Jennifer Hale, Cathy Cavadini, EG Daily, Tara Strong, Roger Jackson, Jim Cummings, Tom Kenny, not forgetting the late Chuck McCann and even occasional to major and minor voice appearances from Kevin Michael Richardson, Rob Paulsen, Kath Soucie, Jeff Bennet and  even Mark Hamill, WHERE can you go wrong? With a good cartoon, comes a good cast of voice artists.
Craig McCracken put his heart into this show and I am glad to have grown  up with this masterpiece. The Powerpuff Girls is no doubt one of my favorite animated shows of all time and I will continue to watch them again and again and never get tired at watching the many episodes that are so dear to my heart. Craig really knew how to create a masterpiece and one that would go onto become a cultural phenomenon. He really knew how to create great characters young, old, male and female, and yet have the main lead cast all female that would appeal to both girls and boys is quite a milestone in cartoon history.
In honor of this series, I will be counting down my top ten greatest Powerpuff Girls episodes. I will however not be including the movie, the Christmas special or the Dance Pantsed Special, also I am only focusing on the original 90s show and not the 2016 reboot. WARNING: Spoilers ahead.
With that being said here are what I consider the greatest episodes.
Tumblr media
10 - The Bare Facts This was one of the first episodes I ever got to record onto vhs, I remember so well on Christmas eve and I couldn't wait. I would constantly watch it played back again and again and you can see why.
Most episodes focus on the girls fighting crime and succeeding, but here, all the action is unseen...at first.
Sometimes when sibling characters argue in animation, it can be degrading, unpleasant and makes you want to lose interest in the characters all together, but here, it's done right, to a point where the arguing isn't degrading or stale and actually pretty funny. Also I love how clueless the Mayor is about everything, especially the scene about "the note", this scene always had me laughing as a kid.
Throughout this episode, the setting is all in the Mayor's point of view, complete with various styles of the girls versions of the story on how it all happened, done with an art style shift for each girl. This idea is hilarious and I love how they constantly jump in with different story telling patterns as follows: Blossom tells it mostly focusing on her (all about her, nobody else), complete with a light red tinted scene.
Bubbles tells it in a rather light hearted but adorably accurate way, complete with crayon drawing scenes.
And Buttercup tells it in a rather shadowy olive-green scene, mostly focusing on the action and not the details like Blossom did.
The Mayor however is oblivious to what has happened and is only wondering why the girls were laughing earlier.
I will NOT spoil the ending for this episode for those who haven't seen it, although I really could have done without the narrator's little puns to go with the moment. Again, the episode title just may give you some ideas.
Overall, this episode was great and was even nominated for an emmy with it's brother episode "Bubblevicious".
KEY MOMENT FOR ME: The "pretty clouds" scene. Seriously cracks me up!
Tumblr media
9. Just Another Manic Mojo
I can't think of any episode focusing on Mojo Jojo to be as brilliant as this one, sure "Child Fearing" was hilarious, "Monkey See, Doggy Do" is a classic and "Mr Mojo's Rising" is one that shouldn't be ignored. But if I had to pick any of the Mojo Jojo themed episodes, it would be this one. Just imagine, a day in the life of a villain: Waking up miserable, going through so much hell each day and reading the news to such goody-goody acts.
Watching this episode back to back constantly, I never got tired of it and I knew it almost word for word at some point.
The first half of this episode focuses on Mojo getting up, regular routines such as showering, doing his teeth, ceasing the day and readying up for breakfast...until he discovers drama in the kitchen...ONE EGG LEFT! I just love the little ramble he does here, over a single egg, what follows is an ingenious rollercoaster of comedy gold. Whenever Mojo's onscreen, you can't help but laugh, with his hilariously bad Japanese accent and repetitive Speed Racer-esque sentences, you can see why he was a fan favorite.
What follows the events is the girls accidentally having their ball crash through their window and what do they do? They ask for it back (well, better than busting in through the roof and looking for it, eh?).
I would probably give it away if I were to describe what follows afterward, but if you really want a laugh, then this episode is the one for you. Of all the episodes where the girls drive Mojo insane, this has got to be the funniest.
KEY MOMENT FOR ME: Just Mojo Jojo, he's absolutely hilarious in this episode, the girls being a runner-up too for not keeping still. Also one word: "curses".
Tumblr media
8. Supper Villain This episode is hilarious on many levels, most of the story  is done for laughs and the setup is well...average...averagely brilliant. It's great to hear Kath Soucie on the Powerpuff Girls again (true fans should know that Soucie started off voicing Bubbles in the two pilots via What a Cartoon before Tara stepped in for the role).
The repetitive dialogue is great, played out for laughs and builds up for even more laughs, mixed with great voice acting.
The story? Harold Smith spends his life working at a mustard factory, bored with his life, he longs for something more, with a dark secret. But when his beloved wife Marianne invites the neighbors over for dinner, Harold is vulnerable and finally breaks free and shows his true colors.
His outfit reveal (obviously home made) is enough to make anybody laugh off of your seat. With his newly found identity, Harold reveals his first villainy. From here, we get some hilariously unforgettable gags, and one of the best scenes that eventually became an Internet meme:  "Eat your pea, Professor!". No matter how many times I watch it, the dinner scene is just classic. Being a comedic show with guests at dinner, I'm pretty sure you can figure out what happens next.
Key moment for me: "Eat your pea Professor!" No doubt about it.
Tumblr media
8. Jewel of the Aisle I'd like to point out here that this episode aired right as Kelloggs released a Powerpuff Girls themed cereal. Sadly it was limited and has since discontinued, so good luck on throwing your pennies onto ebay to grab a box. Now, this episode never really gets talked about enough, maybe because the main villain here is a nameless crook who you never really see again. The story's premise is simple, the girls fail to track down a thief who had just stolen a priceless diamond from the jewelry store. Unable to locate him, they retire for the night, swearing they will meet again. The crook however, hiding in a cereal factory accidentally drops his prize into one of the boxes, which then ends up in the local supermarket.
When the crook fails to find his precious gem, he's down to one box -which ends up in the hands of the Professor. The crook follows him home stealthily only to his horror to find out that Professor Utonium is the father of the Powerpuff Girls. Upon his spying, he notices a commercial (with terrifically shifted fluent animation that almost feels Disney or Warner Bros. esque) and comes up with a cunning plan...dressing up as  "Lucky Captain Rabbit King", the cereal's mascot, I'll leave it up to you on what cereal brands they were parodying here.
While these cereals weren't so big here in Europe, heck, I only ever remember eating Lucky Charms in my own youth a lot until they went up in price later on.  I still got the reference easily thanks to the internet. This still didn't stop me from getting laugh, gag after gag.
Think of this episode as a Yogi Bear cartoon, but instead of stealing a "pic-a-nic" basket or a pie cooling off on the window sill (or a plate of hog jowls if you're thinking Ren and Stimpy), you've got a box of cereal with a hidden unknown prize not included in most boxes. The comedy in this episode is hilarious, for example, how much cereal did the girls go through and not notice a diamond? Also, the classic usage of oblivion and determination is brilliant, it's like watching classic golden age cartoons of the 40s and 50s again. The crook taking on a role parodying the Trix Rabbit is just so funny to watch, no matter what he does, he is being outsmarted by three adorable kindergartners. I love how the girls just play along with the gag and constantly kick him out,. My favorite part would have to be when the crook disguises himself as a monster outside off the front window complete with a Townsville scenery. YOU know you're going to laugh out loud when an idiot pulls this gag out of his hat and fails to succeed.
On a spoiler's note, I felt a little sorry for the crook when he broke down, forgetting about the jewel and focusing on the cereal, I don't know, maybe it's when Bubbles (who is honestly the sweetest little living being on two legs in cartoons) actually gives in and offers t it to him. While most stories like these do tend to have a happy ending for the determined victim, we don't get that here, which is why this episode works. Again, while I've probably spoiled most of the plot, it's too simple anyway. With that being said, "Ridiculous Lucky Captain Rabbit King, Lucky Captain Rabbit King Nuggets are for the youth!". Okay, I'm actually craving junky cereal now, especially imported from USA!  Key moment for me: The comedy in this episode.
Tumblr media
7. Telephonies This is another classic episode, the comedy and timing is perfect, the plot is great and gives us a look into the lives of the villains when they are chilling out and not plotting evil schemes. When something is funny, it has to have speed at exactly the right time, otherwise the joke falls flat and loses it's cool, that's if you can pinpoint that in your head and understand where I'm going with this.
When the Gang Green Gang start making crank calls throughout Townsville, they are lacking in great ways to pull them off. So, after calling the Mayor with Grubber impersonating Ms Bellum, making him leave to "cut the ribbon for the new mall, declaring it open", giving them the free run of the Powerpuff Hotline. What we get is a  rather "interesting" insight of the villains at home doing their own thing as the girls burst in and constantly beat the living hell out of them, only to learn that they were NOT even committing any crimes. Here, we learn that Mojo Jojo is more sophisticated than you think (yet we see him in Manic Mojo actually buying eggs at the supermarket), he listens to classical music and reads the paper and even takes naps in an armchair. Also, what can be more funnier than the "evilest of all evil" ("Him") working out in complete aerobic equipment? That is just friggin hilarious, I also love how polite he is when the girls break in, but the one that gave me the most laughs out of the villains was Fuzzy Lumpkins. Nobody likes having their privacy invaded, especially when you're taking a relaxing bath, the delivery here from the girls was priceless, especially when Bubbles ended it. I love how the violence and beating up here is played more for laughs and not action itself.
Another thing that still cracks me up in this episode is that these villains are all pretty close friends and even keep in touch by landline, that's right, even down in the depths of hell, HIM has his own phone to make calls. When's the last time you've seen cartoon villains in conversation over a phone? Brilliant!
The ending too is pretty funny and I like how the girls don't believe the Mayor after three cock-ups in one day.
Key moment for me: As I said, Bubbles' delivery to Fuzzy was "tell it like is is funny",  BUT the true comedic gem in this episode personally is Professor Utonium. The running gag with him still at the receiver on hold is fantastic. I will forgive the fact that near the end, you see him outside the girls door but I guess that adds to the comedy.

6. The Powerpuff Girls Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever. That's right, that is the actual name of the episode and by god it's a mouthful. Now THIS episode just gets better and better every single time with each watch, whose genius idea was it to create an episode where the girls play pretend? In this case, literally playing The Powerpuff Girls. This includes them playing various roles for other citizens in Townsville and as all kids do when playing together, arguing on who gets to be who?
Honestly, this episode's premise is spectacular. I love how the girls hardly even use superpowers at all, not to mention the unforgettable one liner from Buttercup while playing as a monster. Also, it was nice to actually see the girls here get more comedy than they usually do. For most of the part in the series in general, the comedy is thrown around depending on the characters, story and situation, but here, the girls really do steal the show.
I'm pretty sure a lot of us as kids can relate, with our friends or siblings role-playing as our favourite characters from cartoons, but as each other, that's unique.
PPG Best Rainy Day Adventure Ever is definitely one of the funniest episodes of season 2, so next time you're having a bad day and it's raining, not up for walking the dog, cos it's rai-, okay, enough spoilers. Go watch this one next time you want to see a lead female cast of kindergartners at their funniest.
Key moment for me: The Mayor. You'll have to watch it so not to spoil it.

  5. I See A Funny Cartoon In Your Future Seasonal rot is painful, especially cartoons that were so highly well received by critics and fans alike. After the Powerpuff Girls movie, the show followed the upgraded animated style which kind of watered down the true charm of the first four seasons, as well as lacking in great ideas for stories, most of seasons five and six were...mediocre with sour pickles on top.  Luckily, this one made me laugh. A hell of a lot!
The entire story is told like episodes of Jay Ward's Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons, complete with cheesy but hilarious and witty puns, fourth wall breaking and running gags. We also have the main one off villain here voiced by the late June Foray (voice of Rocky and Natasha Fatale). I like how she and her goosey sidekick are drawn to mimic the style of Jay Ward's characters and the little commercial near the end of the episode spoofing the Nicotine Patch. It's such a shame this episode wasn't traditionally animated, for I would have really liked to have seen some lush fluid animation to boot up this episode more. Interestingly, I never saw the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons as a kid, since they weren't very big in England, but  I got into the franchise when I watched the movie on VHS non-stop and loved it (it's a guilty pleasure haha), so you can see why this episode gave me loads of laughs.
Also note that sadly, June Foray passed away in July 2017, leaving a legacy of cartoon voices behind and fond memories. Since her passing, Mrs Strong herself went on to provide the voice of Rocky for the new Rocky and Bullwinkle series, keeping the spirit alive as always. Good one Tara! Great work. And I mean it!  KEY MOMENT FOR ME:  The voodoo dolls. Seriously, I quote this a lot haha! Also, just the whole episode being a tribute to Rocky and Bullwinkle.

4. Meet The Beat-Alls Okay, this is definitely getting close to what a WatchMojo list would look like, no? WELL I'm gonna jab this list and have it up before you can say "Ringo Starr's a Powerpuff Girl!", but how can I NOT make a top 10 Powerpuff eps. list and NOT include this episode, and I quote @UmbraMagna, "This episode is absolutely fantastic!", never have truer words been spoken? Telephonies made way with great laughs, but that was more focused on the Gang Green Gang, here this episode focuses on Him, Mojo, Princess Morbucks and Fuzzy in what is probably the funniest Beatles parody I've ever seen.
Craig McCracken himself has always been a huge fan of the Beatles, so when season 3 was ending soon it ended with the sister episode to Moral Decay and you know what? It saved the season finale. Every second, there's a reference to...well, the Beatles. Sure, "Homer's Barbershop Quartet" of The Simpsons was fun and had lots of references to the band and other acts, but an entire episode where it's nothing but Beatles second after second, how can you go wrong?
From the Abbey Road walk, to the musical style, to the Yoko Ono reference, to just everything about it, it's one episode that will have you laughing after a Hard Day's Night. EG Daily (voice of Buttercup) has stated during a Comic-Kaze guest panel that this was one of her favorite episodes.
Show creator Craig McCracken himself even listed this episode as one of his top ten favourite episodes of all time. There is one little nitpick, but I guess it doesn't matter, since it still makes way for great comedy and I like how a SINGLE rock actually defeats the girls (back when cartoons weren't very pc, just the way I like'em). Whether you like the Beatles or not, Meet the Beat-Alls is a great episode with the villains at their best. Key moment for me: The whole episode, brilliant!

3. See Me, Feel Me, Gnomey. NOTE: WATCH THIS EPISODE WITH CAUTION! CONTAINS FLASHING IMAGES!  I LOVE THIS EPISODE! Remember what I said about seasons five and six suffering from seasonal rot and mediocre episodes? Well, here's one that I probably consider one of the best of them during the Chris Savino era. The entire episode is much longer since the intro is cut short to make way for what comes next. An unbelievable half hour of a pure masterpiece.
For many, being a  great voice actor means they have to know how to sing and here, we have a lot of it. It really gave the voice actors' chance to show off their singing voices a great workout and boy, did they nail it right out the park? While it's not the most comedic, it's still epic, fun and unforgettable. This episode was like an evil apocalypse, not even fighting on who gets to defeat the girls or who gets to cause destruction or rob banks. It's a real shame they never released this as a true soundtrack, it's so beautiful.
It's got an Andrew Lloyd Webber and Pink Flloyd's "The Wall" feel to it. I really wish this was the episode's true finale, since it's been debated and rumored to, unfortunately the true finale (not counting the specials) was that of What's the Big Idea, a complete let down, since both McCracken and Savino agreed that the show had run it's course, even though Cartoon Network did ask for a seventh season. If only...sadly, we can't have everything.
The Gnome -the main villain of this episode- was quite interesting, exchanging peace to Townsville for the girls' superpowers, yet making everyone bow down to him. Sadly, this episode was banned from airing in the USA, some say it was because of the message of communism, but the true reason for the ban was for the red and white blinking lights that flashed during the Gnome's spell. It's too bad this was never edited for safety so the US audience could experience it at the time but luckily, it was included in the complete tenth AND twentieth anniversary box set, just proceed with caution, I'm saying this for your own safety. I love the Gnome's setting, in a large rose where he lives in peace, I forgot to mention that he was voiced by the legendary Jess Harnell and boy, was he a perfect choice? Have you ever heard Jess sing OUTSIDE of cartoons? Why don't voice artists get more love? Seriously.
Speaking of which, Tara Strong and EG Daily (who only just recently released a song "Impeachable" (parodying Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful") together for charity) really got to show off their vocal talents here more.  Also not to leave her out since I love all three of these amazing talents, Cathy too has a remarkable singing voice! God bless these ladies!  In conclusion, See Me, Feel Me Gnomey is a fantastic episode, mixed with action, drama, music and sheer brilliance from start to finish. Key moment for me: The whole episode. I can't pick one moment. I really loved the harmonizing from Strong and Daily during Cavadini's singing solo in "You Wanna Make Us Feel Real Good". Seriously, once these three sing, it just seems unreal, yet magical.

2. The Rowdyruff Boys Okay!  I'm pretty sure a lot of fans saw this one coming, I mean it's one of IMDB's highest rated episodes, as well as another one of Craig McCracken's favorites. This episode not only marked the debut of the titled characters of the same name, but was the first of many half hour episodes and of all of them, this one was at it's best.   While not the MOST comedic and the boys at the time didn't have as much personality as they did in their later appearances, this episode still left a huge impact on the fans, in a good way. The action in this episode is some of the best I have seen during the McCracken era (something the later episodes lacked), probably along with Stuck Up, Up and Away and Bubblevicious. Tired from constantly being defeated day after day and thrown into jail, Mojo Jojo comes up with the perfect plan to get rid of the girls by creating a trio of kids of his own. Instead of the sweet ingredients for the perfect little girls, Mojo gathers up several ingredients to create the not so perfect little boys. I love how the idea was a reference to the little rhyme "What Are Little Boys/Girls Made of?".
There's some pretty funny but questionable moments, such as...why would the prison serve escargot? I love how the caterer actually smiles in response. Also, why is the Talking Dog suddenly a prison guard? Oh what the hey? It still makes for hilarious gags such as having his tail snatched to finish the ingredients. What I don't get though is Mojo's breath as he flushed the ingredients down the toilet...then again, maybe it was because of when the girls were born causing the chemical reaction to still have an affect which in return passes on to others, in this case, the Rowdyruff Boys. Interestingly, the boys named themselves, while the Professor named his girls. What made this episode great was the voice acting, Roger L Jackson as Mojo yet again was perfect, as well as providing the voice of Butch, Buttercup's counterpart. Cathy, Elizabeth and Tara's energy in this episode were spot on and we even get to hear the legendary Rob Paulsen as Brick and Boomer.
When the two teams meet face to face, they start a huge brawl, the action as I said is amazing, some of the best in any episode, it's like the teams have lept right off the screen.
There is a little problem I have with this episode and...well...it's the whole counterpart vs counterpart thing. I mean...is it really that hard to tell the difference between a little boy and girl with the same hair color? Especially when they use the same chunks of animation for each member fighting against each other, take  the cartwheel scene for example.  Other than that, the animation in this episode was terrific.
This was also one of the first episodes in which the girls were defeated and nearly for good. But with the Disney-esque tears of life trope, they are revived in seconds. I can forgive this trope here but NOT in Pokemon: The First Movie.  Shamed and crestfallen by their defeat, the girls decide to leave Townsville, only to be given a pep talk by Ms Bellum.
And what we get after a little subtle adult joke followed by a defeat from the girls...without the violence, in Sara Bellum's words, "try being nice".  I just love how the boys are distracted by the girls as they are standing looking pretty...well, pretty. Pretty as any little girl could be, I laugh my head off every time in this scene, it's both cute and funny, especially with the flirtatious "come hither" eyelashes and sassy “Hey boys!” expressions on the girls that aren't usually seen. You'd expect this kind of thing on a more mature character, one with an hour glass shaped figure and heels. But alas, being kids, the boys can't stand the thought of ...cooties and somehow, this kills them. Literally. No, seriously, they actually die, in a rather humorous way after a long battle with the girls. What makes this scene great is that there's no dialogue, not until the boys scream at the top of their lungs.
I may have spoiled it a little but hey, visualizing it in your head isn't the same as watching it and believe me, it is a really funny scene. Think of it has a "distracted by the sexy" trope but toned down. Also, what I said earlier about the counterpart trope, I'll make this an exception since it was clearly obvious that it was going to happen.
This episode is a fan favorite, unfortunately, it did have a reputation of inspiring fanart and fan-fictions and McCracken himself actually poked fun at this scenario in The City of Clipsville. This episode was not afraid of almost killing off the main characters and three children in fact, but then again, there was so much edge in this show, there was nothing like it at the time. The mix of action, humor and drama is perfect. It's too bad the follow-ups with the boys didn't get the same impact as this one. In conclusion, The Rowdyruff Boys is incredible and really shows that girls are tougher than they look. Take Buttercup's quote "It takes more than a couple of cheap shots to make us cry!". Inspiring.
Key moment for me:  The boys' defeat...by cooties. Hilarious. After nearly an entire episode of nothing but non-stop action, violence and a huge brawl in Townsville, we get a comedic flirt scene.
NOW before I finally get to number one, here are some honorable mentions.
Him Riddle Diddle - I love the suspense and how it already started with peril, it felt like some kind of action movie. HIM sets the girls up on a riddle-fest or else the Professor will -in Him's words - pay. I could have had it on this list but...the one bit that bothered me was Buttercup piloting a helicopter...umm...when did she learn to...okay, Uh-Oh Dynamo, they are controlling a large robotic being of themselves but a helicopter? I don't know, maybe it was all done for comedy but yeah, it's still a great episode. What makes this episode great is that it builds up with suspense, from one riddle after another, still filling comedy in the cracks and gaps of course. Also when you have Him as the main villain, he's always coming up with something unique, yet nasty. I won't spoil the ending but it is hilarious, I love the girls' reactions after working their butts off to save their father ONLY to...well see for yourself.
Superfriends - @KarToonComics has already kind of gone on about this episode and I have to agree with her on what she said. I have had lonely problems growing up and found it hard to make friends and socialize.  Also, I've personally lost friends due to someone else cutting in the way and excluding me by taking over them and. I don't like to go into it, but we have all had that experience.
The girls meet Robin, their new next door neighbor and befriend her, it's really satisfying to actually see the girls being kids, having fun and playing together for once.
I shut this one off the list though,  because...well, some of the later episodes, I can't stand the sharpness in Bubbles' accent, it's noticeable especially in her Ls. It's like she's getting a bit of a Spanish brogue in there (which probably makes sense since she can speak the language), but I just find it really distracting.
Also, while I really liked Robyn, she somewhat looks similar to one of the other kindergartners in school. Watch Stuck Up, Up And Away and see for yourself. Her friendship with the girls was cute, I really like how they all bonded together like all little kids, but of course, being superheroes, the girls didn't always get enough time to meet their new friend, their next door neighbor in fact. That's pretty sad, you can tell the girls themselves could feel it inside them that they wish the hotline would once not ring and they could do their own thing but Townsville seems to have problems every single time.
Robin and the girls walk to school together the following week when a limousine pulls up carrying Princess Morbucks as a passenger. She offers the girls a lift in the car IF they let her be a Powerpuff Girl, the girls' decline the offer (by the way, I love Blossom's expression during Princess's little bribe).
I can't really go on more without totally spoiling the episode so see for yourself what happens from here. It's a great episode, also a BONUS for Robin's hilarious one liner and of course the entire sequence set to the song Signal in the Sky by The Apples in Stereo, damn, why couldn't we have more episodes like that, that'd be just brilliant. I'd have loved to have seen a cameo appearance of Bis, or Dressy Bessy.
Helter Shelter - I don't know why but I wish this episode was longer, then again with a premise as stupid yet funny as this one, it would probably lose the comedy after a while.
Bubbles loves animals, we all know that. In fact, she loves them so much, she has a habit of bringing them in the house.
The following afternoon, Bubbles brings in a baby sperm whale into the house and the results of trying to hide it from the Professor are hilarious. I love the way the girls panic and all the hiding spots aren't very well hidden for a large mammal such as a whale calf.
The dialogue and gags are some of the stupidest yet funniest in any episode, yet they somehow add up nicely. I also love the running gag of the Professor yelling out Bubbles' name, he kind of reminds me of Dave Seville in Alvin and the Chipmunks. .
You'll have to watch the whole episode to find out what happens but I can't say if it will make you laugh or not.
Equal Fights - This was a great episode, in fact I felt it could have been longer, but then it would probably drag on and go nowhere. The girls become sexist to all males after meeting and releasing Femme Fatale, a master thief, bank robber and also bit of a hypocrite.
While Grey Delisle did a fantastic performance with her role here, I felt that Femme Fatale was one of the more forgettable minor villains.
If this were a double length episode, I would have liked to have seen more of a backstory on why she's a misandrist.
Also I felt the character was eye-candy and fan-service material, from her slender figure to her skin-tight outfit. Also, I love how precocious the girls themselves are on a brief history lesson about Susan B. Anthony.
The morals were great but personally, this along with a similar episode Members Only just didn't quite make the cut for me.  I did love the references to the Justice League though.
Child Fearing - I love the Mojo Jojo themed episodes, especially where he's with the girls throughout and they make each other's lives a living hell. Unfortunately, some were a fluke and hit and miss while others like Slumbering with the Enemy and this one; Child Fearing are great.
Late for science presentation in a rather clumsy fashion, the Professor hires a babysitter to look after the girls. There's a wonderful reference to a certain N64 game here, I don't want to spoil it in case you may haven't seen it. But it's a great laugh if you know your games.  I also love the little smirk the girls give each other when they know they are alone and the Professor forgot to ring for a sitter.
Anyway, the Mayor is too busy to sit for the girls because he's playing video-games, so the girls get an unexpected visit from their arch-enemy Mojo Jojo and the results are pure hilarity, one after the other.
The girls aren't stupid, without a simple huddle or plan, they immediately decide to take advantage of all this and become incredibly obnoxious, mischievous and bratty as any little kid can be. I usually hate obnoxious characters but it's played here perfectly.
It's impossible not to laugh at Mojo here, but also feel sorry for him at the same time. It's a real shame there weren't anymore episodes that had this kind of comedy, because this one is absolutely hilarious from start to finish. Also, the TV scene is absolutely brilliant, the highlight of the episode.
Buttercrush - This was one of the many episodes that immediately got me into the show. Already silently into it that is lol. Anyway, this was an episode I felt went on just too quickly, but if it was extended, it would drag on.
The Gang Green Gang reek havoc at a playground and when the girls show up, the gang's leader Ace throws drops to his knees and does a pathetic routine of guilt. Reluctant, Blossom (being the leader of the girls) agrees, but Buttercup begins developing a crush on Ace, after a tip of his shades, a soft thank you and a wink of charm, Buttercup believes she has just met Mr Right.
Interestingly, Buttercup barely has any dialogue in this episode, heck she only has one or two lines top and tail (if giggling counts). This episode was not afraid to tackle the precocious crush issues, here we have a kindergartner falling for a teenager. It's amazing what the writers got away with in this show.
Buttercup would sneak out every night to visit the gang, I don't know HOW she managed to avoid the Professor checking in on her or anything.
This is one of the few Buttercup themed episodes that was actually good, if not the best one. Although I put it in the honorable mentions because...well...Buttercup's crush didn't last long, in a way it's a good thing otherwise her sisters would have been history, but makes you wonder how much love suddenly poured out of her own heart.
Overall, it's a wonderful episode and deserved a mention.
Cat Man Do - I was SO close to putting this one in the top 10, I saw this episode a lot on Cartoon Network when I was a kid, seriously, they repeated this one again and again yet it never bothered me.
I guess I put it here because...well...the origin of the cat is unknown and who was his master? We never see or hear from him again (minus a brief cameo).
While I haven't found of thought up any theories, that doesn't stop this episode from being a classic. I did feel like the heist scene with the Professor went on a bit too long for a ten minute short. Also, if I were to pick a moment that had me roaring with laughter (not just this episode, but the entire show) every single time, it would be the "We can keep Kitty" scene. The reactions of the girls are priceless and I love how they suddenly lighten up in seconds. Comedy like this in cartoons is rare now, especially with such speed. Also a bonus for the cat himself being voiced by Mark Hamill.
Bought and Scold - Of all the Princess Morbucks themed episodes, this has to be one of the best. Here, she buys all of Townsville and makes crime legal, making the girls' and other citizens' lives miserable. This even leads to everybody's belongings becoming property of the Morbucks household and the villains get to do what they want. Most of all, the Mayor gave the key to the city to Princess, causing her to take over Townsville.
That is until the girls think up a plan to get all they had stolen from them back in a rather hilarious twist. I also love when Morbucks finally snaps and eventually agrees to make crime illegal again, the girls just go off to do what they do best. Seriously, how can you not love the dialogue free scene with the Gangreen Gang, also Blossom's little smug expression when she shows Ace the legal and illegal papers is just brilliant.
As satisfying as it is to see a happy ending again, I can't help but feel bad for Princess here, yeah she's rotten and spoiled but maybe she was raised like that. In fact, you never see or hear of her mother in this show and her father comes off as a bit abusive as seen here with the newspaper, obviously not giving his own daughter a chance to speak. That's why I left it out here.
Super Zeroes - Kids will be kids! Whether they play make believe, go on adventures with their toys or are influenced by cartoons and comics. Which is pretty much what inspires the girls to create their own alter-egos here. Well, sort of.
The girls are sad because they don't feel like "better" superheroes. They don't have an interesting backstory, nor are they dark and tormented, nor do they even have interesting costumes.  So they decide create their own alter egos complete with new costumes.
Don't question where or how they got these outfits or maintained the little abilities, I guess that adds to the comedy. I love how when a monster does hit Townsville, the girls go their own way in their own fashion, very slowly and the results are hilarious! I love how Buttercup's alter-ego "Mange" only goes out at night, kind of a not to Batman. I love how Bubbles' alter-ego resembles My Melody and other Sanrio esque characters while Blossom's got a Wonderwoman vibe to it. I can't really give the episode away without spoiling the plot truthfully but I guess the moral is to be yourself and stick up for it. Which is exactly what the girls did at the end. Only a little spoiler. The moment that really makes this episode is the fact that the girls take so long to fight, you'll have to see it for yourself to get the laughs.
Mime for a Change- Season 1 of the Powerpuff Girls was terrific, there were so many memorable and great episodes and one that particularly comes to mind when you think "Craig McCracken" is this one. I used to watch this episode a lot back in the day and loved the concept of it. I'm not too keen on clowns but Rainbow is just the average friendly harmless kind of person who does his job. She he sounds pretty obnoxious and irritating but he doesn't have many speaking roles. His villain alter ego was pretty unique power-wise, but the question I'm pretty sure we're all asking is...was the bleach radioactive? Was there Chemical X in it? Guess we'll never know, but in a way, that's what adds to the charm. Either way, the bleach seeps out not only the color on Rainbow, but his cheerful personality too. His good kind heart and light sense of humor has gone sour and his love for bright colors has switched to black and white.
Upon realizing what he can do, Rainbow or in this case, Mr Mime can now takeover Townsville by draining all the color right out of it. Not only that, but also affecting those cheerful moods of the citizens of Townsville, also they can hardly speak due to the power of mime. It's really clever. We also discover in this episode that Bubbles loves to draw and colour, especially with crayons like most little girls her age. Upon discovering the black and white atmosphere, she goes on a rampage scraping wax of colour with every crayon she has. Seriously, it's like her box of crayons never ends or run out! Ah cartoon logic.
I have to admit, Tara Strong's performance for Bubbles here during her little panic is pure gold, just listen to those vocals! Keep in mind that she was only 25 at the time. Mega talent!
Her sisters soon take action and look for the suspect. When they finally find Mr Mime, they make chase until they are at a dead end and are ambushed by him. Why couldn't the girls just fly away? Bubbles meanwhile, thinking she had proudly saved the day all by herself wonders where her sisters went and when she discovers them depressed, colorless and mute, she sobs but brightens up immediately remembering she had a crayon but to no avail, it doesn't work. Realizing that her crayons aren't magical, Bubbles thinks up the next best thing...of all 90s cliches in cartoons, she and her sisters save the day...with ROCK MUSIC! Yeah, it's cheesy and all but also a beautiful message. A message of love. Love Makes the World go round is one of the few times the girls ever actually did a musical number and oh my god was this one memorable? I wish there was an extended version of it and an official release, but I guess we'd have to make do with the hidden track on the Heroes and Villains CD. Just listen to that chorus. This is the song that Cavadini, Strong and Daily all used to warm up their performances and vocals whenever they were together in the studio.
I put this episode in the honorable mentions because of the ending, it was a bit hypocritical, one minute the girls are singing and putting a smile on everyone's faces, the next thing, they send Rainbow to jail when it wasn't his fault. Of course, he may have been forgiven later on. But who knows? Overall, this was a memorable episode. KEY MOMENT: Seeing the girls hug, it was adorable!
Ice Sore - Blossom discovers that she has a power that her sisters don't have, causing her to show it off. I put it in the honorable mentions because it deserved it, I felt that Ms Keane making all her class go outside in the frying heat to be a bit irresponsible though.
A Made Up Story - Phyliss Diller's performence as the villain was great and the comedy in this one a bit slow but did have some hilarious moments, plus that ending! It feels like what would happen if Stephen King’s Carrie was turned into a comedy.
Tough Love - One of the first episodes I ever saw and caused me to fall in love with the show as so as I watched it. The concept is dark, creepy and yet unique. When I saw those girls get beat up, punched, kicked, beaten up (heck even by adults), I couldn't believe it. I knew this was the cartoon I waited for, all my life.
Bubblevicious - While not a favorite of mine, I still had to put it here in the honorable mentions list, because, well Strong's performance as Bubbles was absolutely brilliant. Hearing her growl that epic drawn out "haaardcoore" was the cherry on top of Bubbles' character and we see a more stronger side to her. Fed up with being treated like a baby, she does things her way, something even Buttercup probably wouldn't do. My problem though was the way she treated the Talking Dog, threatening to hurt him, a bit hypocritical for Bubbles' taste since she loves animals. This episode was Craig McCracken's all time favourite and you can see why it was nominated for an emmy.
Speed Demon - I gave this episode a mention for the creepy-factor and I mean real creepy. Sometimes I don't know if I'm watching a creepypasta or an episode of the Powerpuff Girls. The show is usually full of action, bit of drama but going as low as this is unusual, this was another dark episode. Everyone chanting "your fault" to the girls  is like the equivalent "They're all gonna laugh at you" from Carrie. Can you just imagine travelling so fast that you went fifty years into the future? The concept of this episode is both creepy, unsettling and disturbing.
Knock It Off - Again, an episode that isn't often talked about. This double length episode is one of the darkest in my honest opinion. Dick Hardly is one of the nastiest, sadistic and cruelest one time villains I have ever seen. Cloning the girls with a full vile of Chemical X and shipping them all over the world just sounds like yet another creepy pasta.
Also, have you seen how deformed these clones looked? Enough to disturb any audience. The scene where the Professor discovers the base and suddenly freaks out at all the hideous deformed clones is probably how anyone would react if this happened in real life. Also, seeing the girls die onscreen was heart wrenching, of course, if this show ended now, it would have been one sad finale.
Did I forget to mention that Dick Hardly's monster form was just terrifying! Those tentacles on his chest just really seemed off.  On the funny side, I love how it’s like the writers were trying to push it on how many times the girls say “Dick”. Also, what was that nerd doing with his PPG doll?
The Boys are Back in Town - The sequel to The Rowdyruff Boys, this half hour romp sees the girls meeting their match for the second time. The girls learn that the boys were brought back to life from HIM and had given them a cootie vaccination, so they are now strong against the girls. I left it off the top ten list because...well, again, the counterpart battle technique just got stale and I found that the boys personality resulted in some rather gross and painfully vulgar scenes. It's like they were trying to compete with Nickelodeon's 90s shows.
Also just a side note and personal opinion: I do prefer the boys' hairdos here. Also the scene where the girls discover the weakness was hilarious. A bonus for Blossom’s cheeky little one liner.
Beat Your Greens  - This was a classic episode. I remember watching it a lot as a kid. The moral is simple: eat your vegetables.
This was the time when Craig McCracken was still at high stakes on the show and this was only it's second season. A time when morals weren't  always the key of the show. Also Buttercup's brief pep talk/speech to one of the kids was great and really motivating. Also I love the little Star Wars reference.
Curses - I left this one out because this trope has been done before in other shows including Spongebob Squarepants and Arthur. But that doesn't stop the episode from being funny. The villain was hilarious, a literal talking potty-mouth who basically just talks gibberish as if he's swearing and every time the girls swore, it was bleeped out with various sound effects and the results are hilarious. I think the funniest moment was when the girls flipped out on the Mayor all over a pickle jar complete with swearwords and their mouths washed out with soap. Overall, this was a funny episode but sadly, when a trope has been done to death, is there really any high stakes for it to be in a top ten list?
And the number one greatest Powerpuff Girls episode is...
Tumblr media
1. The Powerpuff Girls Rule! I am counting this one as an episode! Argument invalid! WHERE do I begin? This was all drawn and animated on Flash and released as the 10th anniversary special and you know what? It's absolutely brilliant. Everything is thrown at you in seconds, the humor, the pacing, unpredictable moments, the voice actors returned again and are just as great and the best part? Craig McCracken came back to write this masterpiece!
Not only was this special a breath of fresh air for the fans, but it felt like a new revival for the Powerpuff Girls done right! Sadly, this was Craig's last involvement with the Powerpuff Girls...when you think about it though, it’s not the same without Craig McCracken as writer and director, so you can see why there are lots more funnies here compared to seasons five and six.
Originally, this was planned to be an hour long but instead was reduced to a full length episode, which is why everyone suffers from motormouth syndrome throughout!
I love all the little callbacks to the classic episodes, including the villains and nearly every second had me laughing with tears streaming down my cheeks! THAT'S the true essence and formula of The Powerpuff Girls. Try watching this special with a straight face if you are a die hard fan of this show, seriously! It's impossible!
Ten years before, the reviews poured in calling this cartoon "gut-bustingly funny", well, this really shows! It's like the show had won back the brilliance when Craig came back and I really wish there was more!
The plot is so ridiculous yet hilarious and I quote the PPG wikia: The key to the world is sent to Townsville, and The Mayor has the responsibility of keeping watch of it. However, he misplaces it, and all the villains of Townsville break free from prison to search for the key, each one of them wanting to obtain it and rule the world, especially Mojo Jojo. The Powerpuff Girls must find the key and return it to The Mayor, before the villains get to it.
Everything about this episode is absolutely fantastic. I will forgive the little reference to a certain 2000s meme thrown in, although it wasn't really needed, but who can complain, right? It was bound to happen since every decade, cartoons tend to have that trend that will blend in with show's plots.
The moment all the motor-mouthed dialogue starts, it's impossible not to sit back with an enormous smile on your face. This was like a true love-letter to everyone who worked on the show, filled with crazy gags and some of the funniest build up on the show, complete with crazy references and everyone filling in on tickling the funny-bone.
The moment Blossom does her impression of Mojo Jojo (COMPLETE with camera angles, close ups and a shot of the entire planet earth) is hilarious! Her sass and smug attitude here just makes it!
I love how cartoony and slapstick this special was, although a little out of character, I don't care, I find it rather hilarious! There's surprise after surprise, after surprise! I've never seen The Powerpuff Girls go beyond the mark of full-on craziness!
I will admit, the motor-mouthing did feel a little forced and rushed but the plot still made up for it with all it's glory! I can't give anymore away without spoiling the entire cartoon so go watch this special when you can!
The Powerpuff Girls Rule! is -in my opinion- the greatest episode of all time. Now ten years old, it makes us all wonder what is in store for the twentieth anniversary. With the reboot having mixed reception and the merchandise still selling, we can only dream on having another special just as fresh and funny as this one.
"Key" moment for me (okay, that pun was lame): The whole episode was filled to the brim with timeless and hilarious moments but if I were to pick one, it would have to be Mojo singing a Jimmy Hart version of Part of Your World. Honestly, the funniest thing ever done on the show, period! Kudos Craig McCracken! You can’t spell slaughter without laughter and this episode did just that almost! A new meaning for the term: gut-bustingly funny!
And with that, ends my top 10 greatest PPG episode list! What are your favorite episodes of all time? Which ones make you laugh the most? I'd love to read and/or hear your opinions! :) With that being said, after twenty years, this show still holds up and I will always enjoy it again and again whenever I have a bad day. If you really want to see every classic episode again, then go buy the complete dvd set, it’s just been re-released as a twentieth anniversary box set!  Thanks for reading and thank you to @crackmccraigen for this masterpiece!

Meme Trip 2k19, Pt. 3
Date: May 21st
Park: Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois
One of the most surreal things about doing these trips after being a homebound and family-locked coaster geek for many years is actually getting out there. I’ve heard of so many of these parks. I’ve seen pictures, read ride reviews, know at least a little something about something in them, and so on. I’m used to knowing factually, but not knowing by experience. You can read a book on how to be a good nurse all day long, but it’ll never prepare you for being in the hospital. Similarly, you can read all about these parks, but it won’t ever prepare you for walking into these places that only existed in your life before as a concept.
One such place was Six Flags Great America. I’d never paid too much mind to them outside of some vague knowledge about them—Raging Bull was the second B&M hyper, Batman was the very first B&M invert, I remembered X-Flight and Goliath’s announcements to some degree, and say, aren’t they getting a new coaster next year?
Then November happened, and I’ll spare you the details but my coo-coo bananas ass really did not like GAM after that. Like Holiday World, it was one of the parks I heavily considered asking Casie to skip. For months, the only coaster there I really gave a shit about was Goliath, and I think that that was originally only because I loved the character of Giorgos so much!
But, I knew that in order to be better, I had to do some stuff I wasn’t 100% comfortable with. I’d faced down ground zero in Indiana and thrived, had a lot of fun with Nelly in the process, and found closure. Now it was time to get closure about that trip, to surrender to the fact I’ll never know what happened and I’m relegated to trusting what I was told.
We pulled up to the park early that morning, the wind biting and cold. I could never live this far north. I shivered and pulled my arms tighter in my hoodie. At least Goliath is here. At least I’m going to get some credits to my roster. It’s just one day, try to keep an open mind! It may not be too bad. It may be like HoWo. Oryche may be here later on too. Early Entry only granted us 10 minutes, and our Six Flags day began.
Superman- Ultimate Flight is a B&M flyer, a model I’m not incredibly fond of. I’ve done 2 of these now, and I still don’t really care for them. This one is better than the one in New Jersey by a small margin, but as a woman with boobs, I don’t care for flying coasters. I’m glad we got this one out of the way early on. Similarly, The Dark Knight’s a wild mouse. There’s not much to say. I’m glad the horn on the train isn’t as loud as GADV’s, since I hate super loud noises. It was fun to shout out “We live in a society!” but it’s ultimately a pretty forgettable ride.
I can’t remember if I said my piece on Joker at Great Adventure, but I’m not a huge fan of these free-spin clones. They’re weird, and I know their gimmick makes them very marketable. However, after doing Lightning Run and realizing these coasters cost the same as that did, I’m even less fond of them. Really, guys? Both are capacity nightmares, but at least Lightning Run is actually a lot of fun. Got the credit, pass, never gonna do that again.
There’s not a whole lot to V2: Vertical Velocity either. It’s an Intamin Impulse, basically the same experience as Possessed at Dorney from last year. It’s a little shakier than Possessed is, and I seriously hurt my foot jumping down from the seats. (Short enthusiast problems.) Still, it’s a fun coaster for what it’s worth. I’m fond of these types of rides, and I’ll be sad when this inevitably does go.
Batman admittedly had always held a shred of an interest for me because of my giant bias towards B&M’s inverted coasters. Being the first of the kind was at least a slight draw to the park for me, and I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint me. I rode it twice, and I oddly enough prefer it in the back. I’m usually a Front-Row Purist for inverts. The queue is immersive for a Six Flags, and the recording of the laughing kids as you exit gave me hardcore heebie-jeebies. The loop should absolutely not be that tight, and I love it. Somewhat of a recurring theme, but the I prefer the clones here over the ones at GADV. This Batman crushes the one in Jersey.
Little Dipper and Sprocket Rocket are two very cute kiddie coasters. I think Dipper is my favorite of the two, even without the really heartwarming story about Six Flags saving its life. They’re both super-fun rides for baby enthusiasts to cut their teeth on, and I’m glad they’ve got both of them in their lineup. Nice work!
American Eagle was fun. This was the ride a lot of people asked me about while I was in the park, and I kept describing it as “Racer from KI with a better layout and not possessed by Satan.” My first ride was lackluster because of a misunderstanding in the queue, but when Oryche and I went back to ride it, I got to really appreciate AE for what it is. What it is is very good and very fun. While only blue side was running, it was a blast. I can’t imagine what both of the trains going at the same time would be like! The helix is a laugh riot and those first few hills give you some solid, strong floater. Shoutout to the kids behind O and I screaming out “Fuck bitches, get money” the entire ride. Whoever they were, I hope they’re having the best summer of their young lives.
Demon is surprisingly not bad at all. Most of the Arrow loopers I’ve done have been lackluster, sans Nessie and TNT. I didn’t have very high expectations for Demon, to be fair, but I ended up really enjoying myself on it more than I figured I would. The tunnel effects were nice, especially the second one that felt almost like a head chopper. The corkscrews are a little rough, but not unbearable. It’s a solid ride that I hope is around in the park for years to come! Good going, Demon. Even if I hurt my arm trying to get into your trains.
Viper is neat in that it was a coaster built in-house a la Beast or Twister, and that we share a birth year. It was better than I anticipated it to be (bear in mind, my expectations for this park were incredibly low), but I prefer the other two wooden coasters in the park to it. By no means is Viper a bad ride, my worst experience was hurting my ankle while getting out of the train, but there are just other rides in the park I like more. I think I might also be a little less keen on Viper because we modeled his personification after someone I dislike who is also a snake in the grass. Haha.
X-Flight sucks. I knew it was going to be Not Great, but I didn’t think it was going to be that bad. I’ve always kind of laughed at enthusiasts who whine and bitch about “omggg b&m rattle wahhh!” But guys… X-Flight actually has a rattle, and it’s awful. I felt like I was riding a jackhammer on this ride. I’m sure it was a lot more fun in its early years, but now that the wings are almost literally flapping, I’ll pass. I’m usually a little kinder on winged coasters than most other enthusiasts, but this is pretty awful. It’s the only ride in this park I actively dislike.
We also hit a few flats. Mardi Gras Hangover was not a credit, but it also just kind of exists. Fiddler’s Fling was a lot of fun, since I like spinning flats [but not spinning coasters, funnily enough.] Oryche and I got incredibly close on FF, but we were both good sports about it. It’s Six Flags, it happens. Chubasco is also a blast with friends, and we were screaming “RMC WHO? I ONLY KNOW DADDY CHUBASCO. ALAN SCHILKE IS QUAKING” the entire time. Irony is funny, guys! Really! It doesn’t hurt that the centerpiece of the ride really looks like a giant bong at some points.
I was a bit anxious about Raging Bull going into the trip. Casie told me again and again that because I’m not too keen on 232 at my home park, I “probably won’t like Bull either.” I think we were both pleased to say that was not the case! I actually enjoyed RB a lot, to the point I really wonder why on earth enthusiasts dislike it. (Or rather, I would if I didn’t already know they dickride Steve and thus are stupid as all fuck.)
No, the layout isn’t as focused on that tasty graceful floater B&M does so well. But it’s unique, and as you can tell by my adoration of LRun, I heavily support individuality in rides. Give me those low-to-the-ground twists over a helix and some bunny hops. I dig it! The trims were about as bad as Diamondback’s, which is to say noticeable but definitely not enough to hurt the ride experience. Oryche and I also got a trimless Bull ride, which slapped.
Again, B&M hypers are like going to a new restaurant and ordering the chicken strips. You can’t majorly fuck up chicken strips. You’re gonna enjoy what you get. Bull is spicy chicken strips. Still chicken, but with a new twist on the same ol’ same ol’. I like it. I only rode twice, but I can’t wait to ride more to see if it holds up or if she was just having a particularly good day. Yee-haw.
And now it’s time to talk about the elephant in the room. Over the last year, RMC has left a very unpleasant taste in my mouth because of Steve. I’ve enjoyed the other 3--- WiCy and TwiTim are wonderful rides and LRod is nothing short of fantastic--- but SV made me think twice about the company. I incredibly hate how they’re treated as if they can do no wrong within the community. I used to hype them up when my only experience with them was LRod, but after SV, my love for them died in a fiery car crash. Wicked and Timbers helped me realize Steve was most likely a glitch, but the damage was done already. I’d never be hype-hyped for an RMC again.
The only park I’d visited thus far where the RMC was my favorite in the lineup was Dollywood. Not Kings Dominion, not SFNE, not Kentucky Kingdom, and most certainly not Cedar Point. Great America is one of the rare parks where the RMC is my favorite in the roster.
Remember when I said there’s only one coaster with a first drop I might like more than Lightning Run? It’s Goliath. It may have been because I didn’t eat very much that day [only a coffee and a donut at Dunkin in the morning and a tiny bag of Takis during the day], but I was graying out at the bottom of the drop consistently. And the hangtime is sinfully good, it puts Copperhead’s to shame.
Yes, it’s short. But I like when RMC is short and packs a punch rather than being long, drawn-out, and having unnecessary MCBRs. I’m trying to keep my salt to a minimum, but it’s very hard to not. Goliath is not a long ride, and that’s a complaint I understand. But when you are riding it, it does the elements it has very, very well. I like Goliath. You guys are just mean. I marathoned this and lost count of how many rides I got, but Oryche said we racked up at least 12.
Also, funny story: Oryche and I were trying to re-ride, but my restraint kept locking back into place. I joked to the ride operator that “It must not want me to go!” She laughed and said that “Goliath picks people he likes.” He likes me as much as I like him. I will defend you, Giorgos, you glorious dumbass.
Overall, I liked GAM a hell of a lot more than I expected myself to. I do think I’d probably let my bitterness override my preconceived notions on the park, but it led to me being overwhelmingly happy with how good it actually is. It’s laid out very well, and it’s clean and honestly really beautiful. It’s like New England, just on a much larger scale and with a lineup that doesn’t need to rely on the top 2 because everything sans X-Flight is decent at the worst. Honestly, it’s probably my favorite Six Flags thus far. Those are words I never thought I would say, and I’m excited to come back and get Whizzer and Maxx Force whenever the winds blow us back into Chicago.
Until next time, you shirtless Greek horndog.

Hey i was wondering. Do you have any headcannoms fir lotor if he went to earth wirh the palidans i seaso. 7 instead of qhat happened in cannon and other random headcannons on lotor? Mine would be that he would be VERY fond of sweets like cakes and pies.
Hi, timberwolf012! Thanks so much for your note! It’s funny, I was thinking about this very topic just a few days ago, haha. I totally agree he’d love sweet things! Here’s some of my head canons for if Lotor ever visited Earth (assuming that the latter half of s6 didn’t happen):
Lotor adores Earth fantasy/fairy tales based off what he’s learned from Pidge’s book and movie collection. So he finds the nearest Renaissance fair and walks around without disguise, claiming he is a Fae prince. The children adore him and bring him flowers. He graciously accepts a flower crown and wears it for the full day.
Allura, outside of such fairs and comic conventions, has to help Lotor disguise himself to fit in with human locals. (He never learned how to control that part of his Altean blood.) She helps him shapeshift rounded ears and a skin tone matching that of his mother’s, Honerva. She catches him staring in a mirror or reflective surface often.
Department store shopping is an adventure, because he is a tactile person and has to touch all the different fabrics. The problem? He buys the same outfit every time. Allura is secretly frustrated.
Lotor demands to Galaxy Garrison that they treat Allura with all the honor due her station as a princess and intergalactic diplomat—he does not understand why they don’t stand for her when she enters a room and why they don’t bow. Allura tries to deescalate the issue, but secretly she is pleased.
It rains on Earth. Lotor loves rain. And various teas. And sitting in front of big windows. Pidge suspects he might be part cat.
He tries coffee, various cocktails, and a 5-hour energy drink, and the next thing the paladins know, he’s learning Spanish from Lance and memes from Pidge, shouting a mix of “Victory or death” and “Wakanda forever!” in the midst of a laser tag war with some of the Galaxy Garrison cadets. He has a massive headache when he wakes up the next day, but he is the new favorite alien on the base, and he takes pride in that.
Does he look like the cadet James Griffin? When he shapeshifts into his human disguise, many people mistake him as perhaps the cadet’s older half-brother. As Lotor has never had siblings, he suddenly feels protective over the young pilot and his team and offers tactical advice to the young ones, just as he does for the paladins.
He loves all the wondrous stories humans have about half-breeds. He works to collect Inuyasha, The Holy Pearl, Star Trek, Vampire Hunter D, and Guardians of the Galaxy, among others. Spock is probably his favorite hybrid, though. Because he is the logical choice.
“Allura, if the humans want to build this…Atlas ship, it needs to transform. Just think, Voltron, the Sincline ships, and Atlas—defenders of the universe, together! It would be a glorious testament to our alliance and its representation, with checks and balances to ensure that no singular race can overcome the other.”
Sam Holt notices Lotor always pulls away from the teams whenever their families are around, and so he tries to involve Lotor in the building of the Atlas and goes out of his way to ensure Lotor and Allura feel welcome eating with his family in the mess hall.
Lotor is often called away to deal with reports about his empire and to settle concerns from his slowly growing list of loyal generals. It leaves him a bit bleary-eyed. Dayak often cuts into the transmissions to bother him about various things—identifying potential candidates for the title as his Blood Empress (which makes him roll his eyes), the last-known whereabouts of Haggar, and “Just when is that yellow paladin named Hunk going to return to fight me to the death? This is very rude, to leave an old woman waiting for a battle. Perhaps I shall come to visit you all—"
Lotor accidentally eats a pot brownie offered to him at a city market, ends up watching space movies like Interstellar and The Martian, and starts crying about the beauty of human perseverance and connection across vast distances of space.
He thinks cars are great fun and wants to buy a Bugatti, but then pouts when he realizes how expensive they are.
Lotor’s in awe of all the Earth cultures. He makes a vow to visit every single country at some point because the diversity makes his explorer/scholar-heart just squish in delight.
He saves a cat with a broken leg and carries it around in a sling until they can find a veterinarian. The cat becomes a resident at the Galaxy Garrison and gains the name Lieutenant.
The paladins discover they cannot take Lotor to a grocery store. Lotor has a habit of looking at the brand information for each individual food item, critiquing the marketing tactics and declaring that he will find the best one out of all the options. At some point, Allura has to grab him by the ear and yank him away from the various jars of salsa. He still manages to grab a few while she drags him along.
Lotor likes salsa. And baklava. And basically any kind of food. It all rounds back to his love of human culture and its diversity.
Fast food? Not as fast as food goo, but a thousand times tastier.
The Galaxy Garrison has a state-of-the-art training court, and the entire Garrison has running bets on whether Lotor or Allura would win in a fight. Most people initially assume Lotor would win, but then they watch Allura body-slam Lotor to the floor like a boss, and several people change their bets. Their combat matches often end in a draw, which makes the rivalry heighten all the more.
Coran starts up a Monsters & Mana guild at the Galaxy Garrison. Lotor joins the game as a bard and dumps all of his points into charisma. Allura has to save him often, but he charms anyone they encounter. He often rolls to seduce until Coran puts a limit on how many times he can do that.
Lotor has to sometimes stop himself from tripping Admiral Sanda and wonders if there is a legal way to get her kicked off the base. Or if anyone would miss her if she suddenly…disappeared.
The chaos of the Garrison occasionally wears on his nerves (so many people, so many young ones trying to prove themselves, loudly). And so he shapeshifts to his human disguise and leaves to take a walk in the nearby city park. Sometimes, an equally stressed Allura joins him. As they walk, they hold hands and say nothing and everything at the same time.
Lotor can’t hold down alcohol due to his Galran biology and is a major lightweight. This becomes a troublesome thing when Admiral Sanda insults Allura at a private dinner to discuss the imminent threat of the Fires of Purification. He does not remember how he insults Sanda, only that it has something to do with the backend of cows. The Earth generals are very careful after that to keep Admiral Sanda out of his sight. Secretly, several of them thank him for saying what everyone has wanted to for apparently the last fifteen years. Allura kisses him for it but then pokes his chest and says she can fight her own battles, thank you very much. He thinks all of it is a fantasy from his hangover.
He learns about Halloween from the paladins and cadets. Apparently, the Galaxy Garrison partners with the nearby town and opens its doors for the little children to do something called “trick or treating,” and all the officers offering candy dress up, like in a masquerade. Everyone tells him that he and Allura should dress up together. He tries not to overthink it and so suggests they present as the Fae King and Queen of the Unseelie Court. His heart stops when he sees Allura in a shimmery, elfin dress. He eats a lot of candy to keep his mouth busy from saying something not meant for children’s ears. Oddly, Allura does the same thing.
Lotor decorates his room at Galaxy Garrison with books, schematics, a few drawings from Pidge, an odd set of Christmas lights he finds in a forgotten box, his collection of shows about half-breeds, and pictures others have given him of himself surrounded by friends, smiling brightly.
He very quickly decides that he likes Earth.
This is all I got for now, but I had fun thinking about head canons! Thanks again!

hi this is @runfive!! (from my main blog!) if you're still accepting prompts from the ask meme “Quiet Me” for sam and five or five and simon! (or whichever characters you feel like honestly haha)
Leave a “Quiet Me” in my ask, and I’ll write a drabble about one character trying to calm another down.
This prompt with these characters has such potential but here I am, making it forlorn like I’m not completely predictable.
Edit: Spoilers! So many spoilers for Seasons 2 and 3.
Simon’s high laugh lasts until the fire-door slams shut behind him and then it falls apart into frantic, heaving coughs. There’s a wet rattle in his lungs that he can feel beneath the heave of his rasping that is blood, he thinks, definitely blood.
It could be more, bits of tissue or even bone from his shattered rib. He doesn’t know if that’s possible. Simon isn’t exactly a doctor and he doesn’t know quite where he’s hit, only that it’s hell riding it out and the process hasn’t even really started yet.
Thought is chased away by the coughs shaking his ribcage until he feels like he’s falling apart, fallen, and all that will be left of him will be dust and the puddle of blood he’s making on the floor.
Eventually, the fit passes. Or, rather, it doesn’t so much as pass as Simon’s body runs out of air to cough with. He takes what blessings he can and begins the climb up the fire escape stairwell. The fire-door is thick but not guaranteed to be soundproof. Simon needs to find somewhere out for the way for this next bit.
He leans heavily on the wall to keep upright and the rough concrete scrapes an atlas of grazes into his exposed skin. He leaves a dark trail smeared all the way up to the roof door but the important part is that he makes it there.  The bar keeping the building secure may be heavy and his feet leaden, and he’s pretty sure the pain is making him lose time, but he makes it.
Up all six flights and out, out into the air where the cold tricks him into breathing and no one but the birds can hear him.
Before, when he had so much to regrow and they didn’t know if it would work, Amelia had to be there. Now they do know. And this time it’s only a bullet wound.
Simon has come to hate eyes on him at the best of times and Amelia’s jabs are only fun on his good days when he can jab back. Days when he’s got more blood in him and fewer holes. He’s not keen on their new tag along being around for this, either.
Dealing with Runner Five is a whole ordeal in and of itself. The way they watch him, half the time it’s like they’re back at Abel and he’s just cracked a joke terrible enough to make Five cringe and laugh at once- there’s warmth in their eyes like sunlight and a cup of tea after a long run and something that could be affection but after a long rain, after something terrible. The rest of the time Five looks like they’re about to beat his head in with a brick.
So, yeah. An ordeal.
Simon sways for a moment under the soft light of the setting sun before he decides standing takes too much effort. The floor is filthy with rotted leaf litter but it’s better than zombie bits so he takes the easy way down, letting himself fall against the wall beside the doorframe. His back hits with all his weight and the impact triggers another series of wet coughs. Slowly, as controlled as he can manage, Simon sinks down so he’s huddled in the shadowy space behind the open door.
It’s all he can do to lean there, his head knocking against the cinderblock every time blood forces its way upwards.
It’s in all his airways, tasting of iron and sweetness, and though it’s so very hard to think when he can barely stay upright Simon wonders what would happen if he drowned in his own blood, his nose and mouth choked full and no air to flush his lungs. Whether that might be the thing to kill him. You can’t heal a deficit of oxygen to the brain, after all.
It would be a horrible, painful way to die. The idea frightens him, which is why Simon thinks it might be for the best. It would be something like justice, perhaps, to die choking on the fruit of his sins.
He doesn’t stop coughing, though, forcing himself to expel mouthfuls of dark blood every time his lungs revolt so it spills down his chin and stains his shirt an ever deeper crimson. He’ll throw it over on to the next roof when he’s done. No sense in keeping a zombie magnet or looking like he’s stumbled off the set of a shitty B-horror slasher.
Until now most of what Simon has been able to feel has been sharp, blinding pain and the peculiar sensation of drowning while shivering from the wind on his skin. Now he begins to feel the sharp cold in his collapsed lung, in the deepest place the bullet reached. He can feel the icy fire begin to stoke around his ribcage as he begins to mend. A new surge of blood and nausea rises up his windpipe and Simon spasms, exhausted enough that he can barely turn his head to the side. The blood bubbles around his lips and sticks in his throat and suddenly drowning seems less like a hysterical what-if and more like something that is actually happening, right this moment, to Simon.
Chest heaving, he scrabbles weakly at his shirt collar, at his throat. He thinks perhaps if he could claw open his chest and scrape out all the rot inside it would feel no worse. Maybe better. Cleaner than what this is.
The rational part of him knows he’ll survive, he’s survived worse, but the louder, bigger part of him that desperately doesn’t want to die is panicking. His eyes snap open, and damn if he doesn’t remember closing them, and there are black spots fizzing and expanding to cover his whole sight like the end is come to swallow him up and he no longer knows whether he can’t breathe because there’s blood filling his windpipe or because all the air has left the sky which is quickly turning to black.
There’s nothing but the fear.
Then, there’s a hand on his shoulder, another drawing his knees up and apart, firm and warm on his icy skin. (Cold, so cold. Even as his insides roil in a fever.)Simon is tipped forward, his head low between his knees.  The blood comes easier in this position, he does not have to try, a relief. He does not have the energy to keep trying.
One of the hands settles at the top of his spine, palm flat against his neck and fingers tangled in his hair. The other runs circles across his back, in time with the quiet hums and shushing that wash over him. Simon barely registers that someone must have followed him up here. The nausea and the freezing cold in his lungs and the dizziness just compound the sheer relief of there being someone, anyone at all. Their strength seeping  into his exhausted body is salvation as they take the reigns from his hands that are too tired, too bloodied to keep holding on.
The deluge from his lungs does not pass easy.
It passes, still.
The sun is more than halfway gone by the time Simon can suck in enough air to  do more than just keep hacking away. The dizziness that turned his limbs to clay abates but he stays where he is, shivering at the exertion and at the patterns Runner Five is tracing across his back.
(Because of course, of course it’s them. When have they ever looked into hell and said not me, not today. Of course.)
They’ve brushed his hair through until it is no longer a knotted mess. Five’s hand still rests there, nails scratching at Simon’s scalp in a way that tingles. Everywhere they’re pressed together sends fine tremors through him- from the hand in his hair to the one on his back to where Five’s bare knee just touches the inside of his thigh where they’re sat between his legs. They’re so warm and present and Simon can’t remember the last time someone willingly touched him. Not to comfort, not to help.
He can’t help it. Simon is a selfish man, he knows this better than anyone. He basks in this feeling, this warmth across his cold and tainted skin.
In some company that doesn’t sneer.
It takes a little while for him to gather the strength to end this, whatever this is. Why ever Five helped, why ever they had come. Simon looks up just as Runner Five presses their hand against the weeping hole in his chest.
His breath catches on the feeling of it which should be so much worse than it is. There’s the sharp freeze of the abomination in his blood, chasing out the natural death, almost at skin level now and then there’s Five’s hand. So warm in contrast it’s scalding. The clash is pain and rapture and Simon can’t help but wonder whether this is a symptom of  his condition or of being him.
Five withdraws their hand and Simon almost chases the contact without thought, fatigue making him weak enough to want it and saving him by taking away his ability to move on the urge. He’s so wrecked right now Five could do just about anything and he’d be helpless. They could take his head. He almost wishes they would.
It takes Simon a moment to notice what exactly Five is holding, their hand held up to his eyeline and stained with his blood. Crimson pools in their palm and trails down the bones of their wrist, wrapping around their forearm like manacles which is distracting in sick sort of way.
Dented and tarnished, it’s the bullet from Simon’s right lung.
It’s wrong, so wrong that it’s there. That it’s in Runner Five’s hand, that it was ever in him. That it ever came out.
The urge to say something builds like the tide under Simon’s ribcage. To say what he doesn’t know- to damn Five, himself, everything. To thank them, to tell them to fuck off. It rises and bubbles with the need to ask them to stay, to hold onto him and not let the hellfire burn away any more of what is left of him.
The need rises to the back of Simon’s throat so thick he can’t draw air so he opens his mouth to speak and vomits thick arterial blood onto Five’s shoes. The coughing returns as the ice and his body fight the wound and one another, forcing dead matter from his mouth.
This goes on for a time. The sky fades from bloody pink to purple to grey and Runner Five holds him throughout, their hands strong and warm and there.
Eventually Simon dozes off and Runner Five waits with him, at some point moving so their back is to the wall and Simon’s blood seeps into their hoodie. Simon wakes a few times before he gets around to thinking about getting up, about moving. It’s a while later that he actually does.

Answer 15 questions and tag 15 mutuals
Thank you to @feyna-v for tagging me!
1. Are you named after someone? No, my mom picked my name just because she liked it and it was American/English and not Polish (she didn’t want to give me a Polish name).  My dad agreed to it. (My name is not Mandelene, btw).
2. When was the last time you cried? While reading the ending of Small Country by Gael Faye a few days ago.
3. Do you have kids? Nope, not yet, haha, but I hope to have kids someday if I can. Two or three but no more than three :) Idk how to explain it, but at some point within the past two years, I started feeling more...maternal toward kids, if that’s the right word for it. I just see kids on the bus and think, huh, yeah, I could have one of those, I think I might like that, God knows why.
4. Do you use sarcasm a lot? Oh, boy. Yes. It’s not as obvious when I’m online, but ask my mother or my close friends and they will confirm that 90% of my daily life is spent being sarcastic. My life is just one big sarcastic meme.
5. What’s the first thing you notice about people? How they present themselves -- whether they’re smiling or frowning, standing up straight or slouching, etc. For men, I immediately notice how tall they are because I’m a tall woman so tall men are absolutely heavenly to look at. Any man that’s like 6′2 ft or taller and in their mid to late twenties makes my heart flutter instinctively. (This is how I know I’m definitely straight, bahahaha).
6. What’s your eye color?
Hazel. I joke that I must be adopted because my parents and sister have green eyes, but my great-grandmother had hazel eyes so I guess my parents are my parents.
7. Scary movie or happy ending? Happy ending for sure. Scary movies rarely have a storyline that I find interesting tbh.
8. Any special talents? I’ve been told I bake a fantastic coffee cake. I can recite the alphabet backwards, and I know some first-aid, but those are skills and not really talents.
9. Where were you born? I’m a Brooklyn baby. :D Brooklyn, NY.
10. What are your hobbies? Writing, reading, occasional video-making, playing with my cat, indoor cycler, casual gamer, novice yoga pupil.
11. Have you any pets? Of course. Most of you know my baby already:
Macchiato!
Tumblr media
12. What sports do you play/have you played?
Oh, here we go. Brace yourselves for a tangent.
I was the sickly asthmatic kid who was too busy coughing up a lung to play sports, and I’m only half-joking. I played soccer a lot as a kid with my friends, but I was never on a team because my asthma was too severe and out of control for that. I’ve talked about this many times before, but I spent a good chunk of my childhood in the doctor’s office. I missed a lot of school. I got poked and prodded. I cried often about how much I hated being sick. I would be out playing with my friends and have an asthma attack in front of them and feel embarrassed. I would start wheezing and ignore it because I didn’t want everyone to make a big deal out of it. Don’t ever ignore your asthma, please. That never ends well. Sports were something I feared for years.
Midway through high school, my relationship with sports changed completely. I started seeing them as a method to improve my asthma rather than worsen it. My pulmonologist got my asthma under better control by coming up with a treatment regiment that he made sure I stuck to by lecturing my teenaged self at great length and wrote notes to my gym teachers at the start of every marking period. I slowly started regaining my confidence. My doctor made it clear that he was not excusing me from gym completely -- I had to exercise to the best of my ability without making myself sick, and if I kept getting attacks, it was back to the drawing board. If I couldn’t manage to exercise normally, then, in his view, my asthma was impeding my life too much and my medicine wasn’t working for me, which was totally true.
One of my high school gym teachers, Mr. B, was notorious for being the hardest P.E. teacher in the school. I was terrified of him. Whenever he made us run laps, I would pause when I started feeling unwell, rest for a minute, and then continue. He never said a word to me about it even though he was known for scolding students for stopping. Oddly enough, it took me a while to realize this, but he was always subtlely looking out for me. He always asked me if I had my inhaler with me at the start of class. Although I was often dead last in everything he made us do, he pretended not to notice and never commented on it. I never cheated him. If he said to do 30 laps, I would do 30 laps, even if I had to pause three times in between. Everyone else would have already moved on to other exercises while I was still doing my laps, lol, but I don’t think I ever had to reach for my inhaler. At the end of the term, he pulled me aside and told me, “I know you always tried your best, and I admire that.” He gave me an A. He was the only gym teacher I had who didn’t accuse me of making excuses or being lazy. Many previous teachers had convinced me I wasn’t trying hard enough, so I would push myself, and then I promptly proceeded to have attacks, be frustrated with myself, and end up in tears in the locker room. I needed Mr. B in my life to restore my faith in gym.
Nowadays I indoor cycle 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour to strengthen my lungs. Once a week, I have my “long tour” which is when I cycle for an hour and thirty minutes. After cycling, I lift weights for another 15-20 minutes. If I have a cold or any other upper respiratory infection, I stop all exercise until I’m well, and I hold myself to this. I have a better idea of my limits and what sports are best for me. I love swimming, but unfortunately, I don’t have a good indoor swimming pool around me, so it’s not something I can do regularly. Running/Track is still something I really struggle with, but brisk walking or hiking is fine. Last year, I was really into dance classes with my friend. Cycling is super kind to my lungs but leaves me exhausted in a good way, so that’s why it’s my favorite form of exercise. I’m sure if I did it outside though, I’d have asthma attacks. I’m generally okay with all sports/exercise as long as it doesn’t involve long stretches of running with few breaks in between, and I don’t do it outside when it’s cold. I won’t die from a light jog unless it’s the middle of January and there’s a meter of snow on the ground. You can invite me to play volleyball/basketball/tennis/whatever, and I promise I’ll be fine, haha.
I’ve also tried getting into yoga recently by following some YouTube instructors, but cycling is what I do most regularly and have stuck to. I take frequent exercise very seriously now, and I make it a priority.
13. How tall are you?
5′10 ft, so 177.8 cm. Super tall, I know. You should see my legs in yoga pants ;)
14. Favorite subject in school? In elementary school, I enjoyed English classes the most. In high school, AP comparative government in my senior year was my favorite because I love international politics. Then, there came a point in my life when I stopped liking English classes and started despising them (around my second year of university). College English consists of reading novels (which is a good start) and then writing unnecessarily long papers analyzing the novel, but if the professor doesn’t like your interpretation or analysis, they’ll deduct points. They’re not the classes you want to take if you want to actually learn how to be a better writer. They just teach you how to pander to the professor and not how to think for yourself. It’s annoying. Journalism classes get right down to the technical parts of writing and tear your sentences apart. I feel like I gain more from those classes than ones in which I have to write a ten-page essay on the symbolism of a key.
15. Dream job? A few years ago, I would have said “reporter for the New York Times,” and while that would be incredible, I have multiple dream jobs now.
I would still love to work at a media outlet. I’d want to either work at the international desk as a writer/reporter or work on digital content like podcasts or short documentaries. However, I can also picture myself working at an NGO or at a think tank. I might also be interested in doing something in government someday--anything that has a direct impact on getting involved in a community. Global politics and writing are my two biggest passions, so if I end up doing work in either of those areas, I’ll be happy.
Ideally, I can continue writing fiction on the side and publish it someday, but that’s still a dream I have to work my way up to.
I don’t want to leave anybody out, so if you’re reading this and you want to answer it, consider yourself tagged by me! :)

The Sarina Project
Ok so I gotta put a little A/N at the start of this one beacuse I realized I have to make a litttttllllleee change to this story. Soz. Annyywaaayyyy... I’ve decided to change the POV from first person to third person, which I know is probably SUPER annoying for you but I promise this chapter would work better if it was not just from Karina’s POV. So I hope y’all are ready for some ~e p i c~ punk!Sarah thoughts ^-^
The Sarina Project
Chapter 18: I Hate My Freinds
“Are you sure your ready to do this?” Emily viciously inquired of DJ, who just happened to be sitting next to her. (A/N: Remember, Karina is NOT narrating this she is NOT HERE hehe ^-^)
“Are you kidding??? I’m literally James Bond,” DJ said, popping the p. “I’ve snuck into like 15 classrooms already this year.”
“OMG ME TOO!” Emily said back in response to DJ.
“Ya exactly we snuck into those classrooms together,” DJ unimpressedly said. They both laughed at Emily’s forgetfulness.
“Haha,” she laughed, giggling.
“Ok lets go,” DJ said, immediately jumping into a James Bond somersault and kicking the door to the classroom. Emily crept in behind him, her greenish, hazelish, slightly brown speckled balls of sight gazing over the cold, lifeless, OPPRESSIVE, torture seats... aka... DESKS. (A/N: hahahahhahaha I hate school sum1 halp plz 😭😂)
“There’s no one in here,” Emily said after about ten minutes observations.
“Wow it’s not like I can see the exact same classroom,” DJ sarcastically quipped back at her in such a tone that only DJ could recreate.
“Just get to the desk,” Emily said, deciding to suddenly use her gymnastics skills to backflip across the room and onto the teacher’s desk.
“Wow I, definitely good enough for the olympics if I can do that,” Emily said, obviously very very proud of her recent accomplishments. Ever since she was two days and fifteen hours and 32 minutes old, she had wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. Gymnastics was her LAIFE!! (A/N: Chipotle is laiiifffeee heh XD). DJ rolled his brown orbs he used for seeing almost every day back into his head at Emily’s showyoffiness and walked over to the same teachers desk Emily was standing on.
“I saw Mrs. Bersbedasukeon put the paper with our group project partners on the third drawer from the bottom on the right said,” DJ told Emily, DABBING and pointing toward the correct drawer. Emily pulled open the drawer and grabbed the single piece of paper sitting on there. A piece of paper that could change the life of ALL THE NAMES ON IT. This paper would be the most sacred thing Emily would touch in a long time.
“This piece of paper is so precious,” Emily hugged the paper to her chest while violently popping her p’s.
“Just switch the names!!!!,!!!!!!!” DJ annoyingly said, banging on the desk to gain Emily’s attention back. Emily nodded and started whiting out a few names on the paper with... WHITE OUT; which she had conveniently stashed in her coat pocket and had just pulled out for this specific reason.
(A/N: okiiii idk how to describe this next part because it always plays like a movie in my head... if that makes sense... IDK. But anyway I’m gonna write this next part like a script so it’s easier for y’all to understand. Remember dailysarina cares about her followers!!! ;))
Emily: *quickly runs white out over a few ^convenient^ names*
DJ: *rewrites the new group partners aS THEY SHOULD BE*
“Good. That’s good,” Emily said as DJ forged the teachers’ handwriting. Then the super sneaky spy duo (A/N: “Nice use of alliteration” -Mr. Scoggins, my English teacher haha jk I would DIE if he read this lol xD) left the classroom until the next day.
THE NEXT DAY............,,....
I enter through the doorway to my art class, brushing my newly dyed pink hair out of my eyes and adjusting my lilac colored flower crown. ‘I wonder if Sarah will notice my hair?’ I wonder. Wait. WHY DID I THINK THAT?? Ugh this is so annoying. Sarah is literally the scariest person I’ve ever seen and yet I am CONSTANTLY worried about what she thinks of me. What is up with that?? It probably just because I’m a weird person, and that’s what weird people do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
“Ew your hair looks like a fairy threw up on it,” Sarah quipped at me the second I walked in the room, without even making eye contact. What the heck?!??,.! Why is she so MEAN? “You also look like that girl from LazyTown.” OH THAT’S IT.
“Yeah, well... you look like Susie from DELTARUNE!” I screamed back at her, crossing my arms in satisfaction. I can’t believe I actually stood up to her! She didn’t get mad and punch me in the face like I thought she would. She didn’t even yell another insult back at me. She just smiled a bit, and went back to drawing a skull and cross bones on her ripped jeans with eyeliner. I skip over to a giggling Emily and DJ, who were sitting at the table next to Sarah, and sit down, fluffing the skirt of my light pinkish salmon dress as I sit.
“What are you laughing about?” I say to my freinds, who seem to be cackling about something I don’t know about. Are they laughing at me?? I wouldn’t be surprised if they were, considering all my old friends at my old school started bullying me for being weird. UGH! WHy is being weird so hard in high school??
“Nooooiittththhhhhiiiiinnnnnnngggggggg............” the blonde haired girl and the brown eyed boy said in complete unison. Ok, that was creepy, I’m just going to ignore that.
“I will now read out the partners I’ve assigned for this art project y’all will be working on,” our teacher, Mrs. Bersbedasukeon yelled at us. I really hope I get a good partner that doesn’t make fun of my pink hair. And I rreeeeaaallllly hope I don’t get Sarah. ANYONE BUT SARAH.
“The first pair will be Karina and Sarah.”
...
...
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
“Ummm, can I please- but I am cut off by the rudest teacher to ever exist. She just goes on giving out partners like I don’t have a problem with mine. HOW RUDE IS THAT
“Ugghhhhhhh now our project is gonna be covered in rainbows and glitter and pink flowers, gross.” Sarah said, banding her head on the table. I feel like I’m about to cRY. THIS IS GONNA BE H O R R I B L E. why does all the horrible stuff always have to happen to me? My life sucks,
“Well have fun with you Project, you guys,” Emily quips sarcastically, popping the p, but I did NOT think it was funny. She gets to work with DJ, and that’s NOT FAIR. why can’t THEY work with Sarah???” At least they sort of l i k e her.
This is probably all their fault.
I hate them sooooooo much. :( 😭
...
WHOOOAAAAAAAA CLIFFHANGERRRRRRRR!!! xD. Soz that this chapter was a little confusing but a lot of stuff that needed to happen so the story can finally pick up (I can’t believe I’ve written 18 chapters!!!) I honestly think this is the best thing I’ve ever written, but REMEMBER. I have NEVER written anything before this is my FIRST time trying fanfic and I really don’t want anyone to judge me. Don’t be r00d LOLOLOLOL.
On a different note........ my mom is FINALLY taking our family to Chicago and I’m literally going to be spending all week hunting for my two favorite people EEEEEEEEEE. I’m hoping to see them at least 7 times, maybe more? I mean I know what kind of places they like to eat at and where they hang out with people (don’t ask me how I know I’ll never tell hehehehe) so it shouldn’t be too hard to find them. By the end of the week they’re gonna LOVE ME! xD xD Anywayyyyy because of that I probably won’t be writing another chapter next week, but I will still be posting d a n k memes about our children! Dailysarina is signing off now hehe. Peace!!! ✌️
