🥰 Common Ground (His Boy Next Door #40) (RJ Moray) - LOVE that Jack & Ewan are finding some common ground - really love that this series is showing how two people who don't particularly care for each other can work to find connection for the sake of the people they DO love

😍 ACT-verse series (ann_anotherthing) - truly outstanding series about middle-aged Steddie getting a 2nd chance romance after their first one flamed out 25 yrs earlier. Full series is 117K but it starts with A Certain Type (54K), which is a fully complete story with satisfying HEA - the rest are flashback fics or wonderfully indulgent epilogue/vignettes, full of fluffy and delicious porn. The author confesses to basically turning them into her middle-aged OCs but 1) I think her projections of their characters in middle-age with these particular life experiences seem reasonably plausible and more importantly 2) I don't fucking care because this story and these characters (main & supporting) are AMAZING.

❓ #QOTD What's the most valuable (to you, not monetarily) book in your collection? ❓

🦇 Two estranged half-sisters guard their family's library of magical books, all while staying continents apart. Working together, Joanna and Esther Kalotay unravel the deadly secret that led to their father's demise. The ancient and rare books he collected aren't simply page and ink. They're true page--books with the power to manipulate the elements, bend realty, or cater the world to a person's bidding. The world of magic contained in these books is far more dangerous than they ever imaged. Can they unlock the secrets their parents have long kept hidden...and perhaps uncover a true magical library in the process?

💜 Okay, so...WOAH. I think, perhaps, this was the strongest, most powerful debut I've read (maybe ever) -- and I've read a library's worth of debuts. It's no wonder this book was nominated for not one, but two Goodreads Choice Awards (Best Fantasy and Best Debut). To be honest, I sat on this review longer than intended; I'm struggling to find my words here. The prose is enthralling, as magical as the books mentioned within. Törzs has seamlessly bound thriller, dark academia, and fantasy together with a raw, realistic cast of characters. The cryptic plot and half-explained world (as the Kalotay sisters barely understand it all themselves) ensnares you from the first page. This book is spellbinding, almost dizzying; a dozen little secrets, waiting to be revealed. The story itself is multilayered but still woven with care; no one element or point of view eclipses the other.

💜 There are familiar fairytale elements that make the story's magic easier to perceive (magic mirrors, a quest, absent parents, a secretive wicked stepmother). Instead of witches and magic wands, the story relies on a powerful source we have in the real world: WORDS. The mythology is careful and precise, and though much of it remains secretive at first, each piece is eventually revealed. The writing style is contemporary, easy to understand, yet the voice is uniquely Törzs' in a way that makes me eager for her next book. There are many themes to explore, too; found family, isolation, the power of books. Törzs took the metaphor "the pen is mightier than the sword" literally, demonstrating there's magic and power all around us. I'll enjoy escaping into this world once more. Added bonus: a sapphic ship and well-executed disability representation.

🦇 Stepping into this world is a little jarring at first. While everything is eventually revealed, you have to let the story carry you for a few chapters before you gain your footing. This is a book that's definitely more enjoyable the second time around. I do think you need to read this book at the right time (I wasn't completely in the right headspace when I started, not that I'll allow that to impact my review).

🦇 I'm afraid to say that the Big Bad and major reveal were obvious, though perhaps they were intended to be. The story isn't about defeating a monster as much as it's about the connections made during that journey. The found family (and, for the sisters, reunited) vibes of this story hold its true power.

🦇 Recommended for fans of The Night Circus.

🛏️ What does your OC’s bed look like? What would they like their bed to look like?

At her home? Definitely around king size minimum, maybe a tiny bit bigger; whatever size of bed would fit three people pretty comfortably! A few blankets, probably not too many unless it's the dead of winter. They have way too many different comforters in different patters but only use, like, three of them on a regular basis. An average amount of pillows--not too many, not zero. It's cozy and is never really fully made like a hotel bed, more just like...halfway there, mostly in order but not trying to be perfect. (And this arrangement is more than fine with Kerra, so :) )

🎲 If your OC played a pen and paper RPG, what class would they pick? Warrior, mage, thief, ranger, cleric, paladin, druid, necromancer, bard (or other, if that’s not enough).

Oooh, good one, hmm...I don't think she'd pick ranger, if only because that's basically what she is anyways, and I think she'd want to try something different. I could see her trying druid, which is along similar lines to her GW2 class but different enough in some ways that she might enjoy playing that. (Also, interestingly enough, my gut reaction was to say that she'd play a paladin, which I think is also a good option--and maybe the one that's most likely.)

📚 Your OC has to improvise a 10 minute lecture about a topic of their choosing. What do they chose?

Travel, if it's in a venue where she can easily and freely make jokes. It'd be good advice tempered with occasional terrible puns, and let everyone know which waypoints are the most practical, and which routes are the best to take. Kerra's been over enough of the world that she'd be very well-versed in all of this, and she'd also love to share. Also, my brain just generated a potential terrible slide title of "The Ups and Downs of Airship Travel", and I don't actually think Kerra would use that one, but there you go xD. And she would not speak favorably of the Consortium.

Bonus questions! I'll give you some GW1 facts for Cal, since they're on my brain at the moment:

🤝 Does your OC have someone they want at their side when they are scared? Who?

Their wife Daisy, hands down. Being in love with someone and also living through an apocalyptic scenario with them (in Cal and Daisy's case, that'd be the Searing--at least, that was the first apocalyptic-adjacent scenario they dealt with) tends to forge that kinda bond.

🕐 Was there ever a time your OC would have given everything to turn back the clock 5 minutes? What happened?

Given everything? Ooh boy. I don't know about everything, but they would have given a whole lot to turn the clock back five minutes when the Searing started. Nothing like entering Ascalon City like you usually do, waving to the kid who hangs out by the gate and thinks you're one of the coolest adults on the planet, and then the world being set on fire immediately after, and the kid nowhere to be found. That's a pretty big one. They carried a lot of guilt about Gwen's disappearance/probable death for years, even though there really wasn't anything they could have done in that moment to change things.

🎲 If your OC played a pen and paper RPG, what class would they pick? Warrior, mage, thief, ranger, cleric, paladin, druid, necromancer, bard (or other, if that’s not enough).

Sorcerer specifically, I think. Cal's a ranger/elementalist (as can be done in GW1's dual class system), and they'd enjoy playing a class with that brand of magic. I could also see them try out playing as a wizard specializing in necromancy, if they felt like trying something new.

Eclair’s Guide to Snow on the Black Wall: Part IX

📚 Of every film I’ve seen in the past, that little confrontation in the last post in this series was certainly towards the bottom of the list of outcomes, although it does remind me of another older movie that Popcorn Cookie suggested for its historical parallels. Anywho, Espresso Cookie has been showing me how to streamline unnecessary work such as typing things that can be expressed in images. As a wise Cookie once said, “A picture speaks a thousand words.”

Now featuring more screenshots of the stage reward list minus the Crystal star rewards. Those are just 20-30-50 all the way.

Stage 13-24

Wave 1: 3 Licorice Cake Hounds, 2 Sprouted Mountain Ents

Wave 2: Sprinkled Yeti, 3 Choco Frost Spirits

📚 As we approach the top of the bordering wall, this round has a little bit of everything we’ve seen so far, save for the Licorice Ooze. Watch your main damage dealer’s HP and the status of your frontline and this should be a walk in the park. A very chilly, blizzard-ridden park.

If it’s not the Ooze reforming that’s reverting progress, It’s almost certainly the Yetis or the Ents tagging down your damage dealer like they were nothing. Stall too long, and you’ll exhaust the 3 minutes you have to finish the stage! Finish it the first time, and you can pick up 300 Crystals from the Dark Cacao Kingdom Adventures tab in the events menu!

📚 Save for the second wave, this is where the chocolate really comes to play as both the middle attacker and the frontline face a daring assault from both sides. Once towards the final wave, batten down the frontline or watch them get overtaken by a menagerie of chocolate wildlife.

Speaking of… anyone care for a mug of hot chocolate? It’ll help as you count your checkpoint rewards and watch the Licorice Sea bubble over.
