End of year wrap up: Looking back and ahead

2021 was my first full year studying Japanese! I’m so proud of the progress I’ve made and am even more excited to keep it up in the coming year. This is also the first time I’ve fully felt myself understand just how to self study a language- I’ve had many failed attempts in the past, never getting past extreme beginner. So, there was lots of trial and error, finding things that work for me, things that don’t, and the continuation of thinking up ways to keep improving (especially vocabulary. My eternal enemy, but such a love-hate relationship).

This year, I ended up reading seventeen books! Okay, volumes of manga. But I’m still very proud of that! Just recently, I found myself reading volumes of manga within a few hours with relative ease. At the beginning of the year, when I wasn’t even thinking of reading native content in Japanese, this would’ve seemed impossible to me. My most read manga series was 月刊少女���崎くん (げっかんしょうじょのざきくん) at a total of seven volumes. The series I found easiest to read was the 加瀬さん (かせさん) series and the most difficult was メジロバナの咲く (めじろばなのさく).

Next year, I would like to round out my studying a bit more. I’d like to place more focus on output rather than just inputting so much. My first plan of action to do this is starting a language journal. All my grammar and vocabulary notes are elsewhere, so this will simply be a place for me to write in Japanese. I will also be challenging myself to get used to writing vertically. Something that I always say, I also need to up my listening game. I’m serious this time, though! Next year, I want to watch more shows with Japanese subtitles- shows that are comprehensible to me and that I actually care enough about to finish. Tying it all together, I plan to write down synopses and my thoughts on each show I finish in my language journal.

Another very new thing to me is actually setting goals. This upcoming year, I’m going to give it a try. For 2022 goals, I want to cover all N3 content, read at least one novel, finish an entire show in Japanese, and study in new ways, including using songs more intensely. And, of course, all these goals are written out in my language journal.
