新聞🗞️を読んでいて見つけた
ある方の言葉があって
・
どこかで聞いた名前だな〜
・
と思って調べてみたら
アウシュヴィッツ収容所の生還者で
・
どういう経緯だったかは忘れましたが
ちらっと以前その方の話を聞いたことがあり
でもあまり深掘りしないまま
そのときは終えてしまって。
・
改めて今になって
その方を描いた映画を観たり
書籍を読み始めています。
・
新聞から見つける小さな情報が
私にとって大きなものだったりするので
ついつい隅から隅まで
読んでしまったりするのです。
・

(disclaimer: I’ve been casually learning Japanese for a few years but I’m not at a native-level yet)
In Japanese, the subject of a sentence is omitted most of the time and is assumed through context. For example, if someone says 最高だぜ (saikou daze, lit. “the best”) when watching a show, you can assume they mean “This show’s the best!” even though the object (the show) isn’t explicitly stated. Or if someone sees their friend is wearing a cute outfit and they say to their friend かわいい (kawaii, lit. “cute”) you can assume they mean to say “You look cute” or “That’s a cute outfit” to their friend.
This is fine, of course, until it’s in the middle of a song lyric and I’ve no idea what the subject of the sentence is ‘cause it’s not a textbook structure and it also mixes in English words (which Japanese pop ? song lyrics sometimes do)
For example, ポケモン ゲットだぜ！(Pokémon, getto daze!)
“…… Okay so ゲット is in katakana which means it’s a word borrowed from another language. Seeing that it’s pronounced “getto” it’s easy to guess it’s the English word “get”, as in “I’ve got something”, and in the context of Pokémon and catching them, it should mean “catch” or “capture”. This means the phrase involves the verb “catch” and the object “Pokémon”. Now, in the textbook structure, an object and verb in Japanese would be connected by a conjunction such as に or を, but this sentence doesn’t do that because native speakers would omit not only the subject but also conjunctions, especially if it’s meant to be anime dialogue. The sentence-ending particles だぜ means the tone is very rough and masculine, fitting for Ash as a ten year old boy who loves Pokémon. This means that even though literally speaking the sentence is something like “Pokémon, caught!” a more fluid localization in English should be “I’ve caught a Pokémon!” or even “Gotcha, Pokémon!” However, knowing that localization in the English Pokémon anime is stylized to the point of making new English names for characters, it more likely refers to the well-known English catch phrase “Gotta catch ‘em all!” although if I want to keep the original line’s meaning it’d be closer to “I caught a Pokémon!”… That’s just the opening catchphrase of the one minute opening theme WAIT A MINUTE—“
