Lady Hamilton (1765-1815) was one of the century's most fascinating women. Born Amy Lyon, a blacksmith's daughter, she hired herself out an early age as a maid, before changing her name to Emma Hart and striking out on her own for London to pursue an acting career. Her foray on the stage was brief and forgettable, but her looks captivated George Romney and other artists and she soon became the most famous "model" of her day. After a series of liaisons with several members of the "gentry" resulted in an unwanted pregnancy, she was "pawned off" to an aging and ailing Lord Hamilton as a wife. Her "upward mobility" did not end there. Starting in 1793 she became the mistress and great love of England's military hero, Lord Nelson. After Nelson's death in 1805, her life went rapidly downhill, with alcoholism and other ailments ravaging her looks and body, until she finally succumbed, penniless, in 1815, to amoebic dysentery. Books and films continue to tell her story even to this day.

This group portrait, a rare example of the conversation piece in Vigée-Lebrun's oeuvre, was conceived as a tribute to friendship and motherhood. The two women regularly attended the artist's musical soirées before the French Revolution. The painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1787, where critics praised the brilliance of the artist's technique and the elegance of the poses. The reviewers also focused on the intensity of the motherly and filial affection expressed in the interaction between the marquise de Rougé and her sons.

Le nom « d'un confesseur » indique que l'œuvre a été composée pour la fête d'un confesseur de la foi. La pintura está firmada y fechada en la parte inferior izquierda Petersbourg / Vigée / Le Brun / 1797 y muestra a Elizabeth Isabella Mniszech (1787–1830), hija de una de las sobrinas del rey polaco Stanislaus II August Poniatowski. Fue pintado durante la estancia de la artista en San Petersburgo y también se menciona en sus Memorias. Vigée-Lebrun gozó de la estima del rey Estanislao I de agosto, de su hermana la condesa Louise Zamojska y de su hija, la condesa Urzula Mniszech.
